"Beautiful," she said, alternately looking out the windows of the observatory and through the small telescope.
After a while, she wondered what she ought to look for. She was just a beginner at stargazing, and the large chart next to her looked a little complicated.
Shaking her head, she remembered something she had read about before coming up to the observatory. "Polaris. The North Star," she said aloud to herself.
Tayla wondered if she could find it. "I can find it if I find the Big Dipper first...and the Little Dipper..."
But Tayla wasn't sure how to use the telescope very well. "I should remember to ask the professor for help next time..."
Feeling a bit disappointed about the telescope, she decided to look for the Big Dipper just by gazing out the window. A few minutes after, she found it. "Hmmm...but where's the Little Dipper...Polaris at the end of its handle..."
Tayla kept her eyes in the sky, once in a while still using the telescope as best as she could.
As soon as Sophie got the owl from Tayla, she went up to the observatory, with her permission slip in her pocket, just in case. She was really excited to start stargazing, but wasn't sure about what to do. She had stargazed before back home, but she didn't have to do anything with it afterwards. Actually, Sophie didn't even know if they were supposed to take notes about it or anything. Maybe Tayla knew whether they had to or not...
Sophie found her new Gryffindor friend already using the telescope.
"Hey, Tayla! How are you?" she said smiling and waving as she approached.
"It's a good night to stargaze, isn't it??" she said looking up at the sky. It wasn't hard to spot many, many stars without the help of the telescope.
"Do you know what we have to look for?" she asked, still looking up.
"Oh, look! That brighter star right there!" she pointed.
"Do you know which one it is??" Sophie didn't know any constellation's name. The only real thing she knew about stars was that they were shiny and really pretty. Oh well, that was enough to make her like them!
Sophie stepped closer to the telescope and tried looking through it. Her eyes twinkled as the stars looked bigger and brighter.
"Wow, this is so pretty!!" she said glancing at Tayla.
