Don't Cross the Book | who turned out the | Lights Lennox

Jez wasn't quite sure why she liked this tree so much - maybe because it was strong to the point of violence, maybe because it seemed to challenge her, maybe because it was just a darn old tree that not too many people went near, and so was sometimes a better place to think than in the common room or the lake. She sat down on the grass, out of real harm's way but close enough so the tree could have whipped her with its longest branches if it had wanted to. However, it seemed relatively calm today, and didn't take any notice of the still quite small second-year. Jez stared at it, deep in thought, her fingers unconsciously tapping out a rhythm on her knee. Occasionally she hummed under her breath, but mostly she was silent, staring at the tree and waiting.
She didn't know what she was waiting for. For the tree to start talking to her? For some kind of psychic realisation to dawn on her? She didn't know. Her fist tightened over the note in her hand, the note she hadn't yet shown her friends.
Quote:
Dear Jezabel,
Your letter was surprising, but also inevitable. I knew you would beg for your friends' lives at some point, but it is not possible. Their loyalty would be admirable if it was not so incredibly foolish. Nathaniel took a curse for you - would you do the same? Pamphylia offered you a 'safe' place - would you do the same? I think we both know you could never repay them your debts.
The issue is, Jezabel, they will be severely disappointed that all their efforts were in vain. Because you will die - we both know you must. And unfortunately, so must Nathaniel and Pamphylia. Not matter how many times you try to tell me otherwise, I cannot take for granted that you didn't tell them everything.
So my answer is no. Nobody's lives will be spared. How many more people will you let die before you accept the fated? Your family and Nathaniel's parents were just the beginning.
Yours sincerely,
Jared
P.S. Tell your friend Jordan Macey to run while he still has the chance, or his little wizard brother will be next.
Jez was scared to death of Jared. Her nightmares alway featured him, right at the end. She'd watch her family die, one by one, hearing Than's screams as he was tortured, Eris' as she lay in agony with her back broken, Hadrian and Crevan's desperate attempt to reach help. Then she'd see Keegan lying dead, Des beside him, Nate's parents and then Pam's parents following them. She'd see Pam being tortured, then hit with a bright spark of green light. Nate's body was always last; bloodied and white-faced, his blank, glassy eyes staring right at her. Jared would step out of the shadows, his wand raised and pointing at her. As the green light came speeding towards her, she'd always wake up, drenched in sweat, and more than once screaming in terror.
Jez shook herself, shuddering. She visited the dream enough in her sleep without seeing it in her waking hours too. But the images were so vivid, she couldn't help thinking they weren't just figments of her imagination. They were premonitions of what could happen if she didn't save her friends from herself. She had a horrible feeling that Jared was trying to invade her mind.
