For the first time since meeting her, Conrad actually looked at Melanie. She was kind of pretty, with brown eyes and long, brown hair. She was dressed exactly like a Muggle, which was strange to him, as his family and his friends back home always wore robes.

After a second, he realized he'd been staring, and tried to cover it with a question. "Hey what's that on your necklace?" he asked.
Hippogriffs sounded like the oddest looking creatures ever, and Melanie quickly drew together a mental picture. She thought such an animal must be dangerous, but perhaps not if people could get close enough to hear what they grunt like. Although, there were plenty of muggle creatures that she knew the sounds for but wouldn't exactly pet. 'Like lions and tigers and bears- OH MY!' Melanie thought, smiling to herself a little. She would have to catch Conrad up on The Wizard of Oz at some point too.

"Oh, this?" she responded, removing herself from the confines of her own head and remembering that she was having a conversation. She got caught up in thought so easily.

She wrapped her hand around the pendant of the necklace, pulling it up to about level with her chin. Shifting her grip to the chain, she dangled the oval-shaped charm in front of her so Conrad could see it. The antique silver finish caught the little light in the room, and the various small, blue and green crystals embedded into the surface reflected it at a multitude of angles.

"It's a locket my mother gave me before I left for Hogwarts. My grandma gave it to her when she was younger," Melanie said, twisting it around in her hands.

She ran a finger across the surface, the colored crystals like braille against her thumb. At the center of the scattered crystals was a single rose, raised up off the surface of the locket, the detailed flower, stem, and leaves the same antique silver as the rest of the face.

"My mom changed the pictures inside before she gave it to me though. See," she said, opening it to reveal the oval-cut photographs tucked inside, "now it's her and I instead of her and grandma."

Melanie held the open locket up a little higher so Conrad could see it more clearly. "Our faces are cut from the same picture," she explained. "It was taken when I was about three, I think."
