And Carter had mentioned them possibly looking at her last year. She was just curious.

"Definitely," Eyes back on Max, "I was going to ask you to come anyway." She didn't really want to go to Vindictus alone. He still had that intimidating thing about him.
Max nodded as she listed off topics of conversation. "Those are all good things to ask about, honestly," he shrugged, watching her mannerisms carefully. "Well, I'd be happy to come along. I always like listening to him talk. He's a very insightful man." Max thought of Vindictus as a sort of role model; he was very talented, wise, and he had enough charm to catch the eyes of all the women in the world. Max would be lucky if he even gained one's attention.

His stomach gave a low growl and he tore his gaze away from Ellie to eye the staff table. Tate was there. Hopefully he would get the show on the road. Max wanted food. Before turning back to Ellie, Max looked around the Great Hall at the other house tables - particularly the Hufflepuff one. Treyen seemed to be having a good time. Max wasn't sure if Treyen was naturally a friend to all or if he was talking to younger kids because it was his duty as Head Boy. Either way, Max thought it made him look like some kind of celebrity. And that's when Max decided to bring their relationship up to Ellie for the first time.

"You and Treyen... are you two, err, doing well? Good, strong friendship?" He could have said relationship. He didn't. It was much nicer to think of Ellie and Treyen as being the best of friends. Plus, a relationship was based on friendship anyway. He continued slowly, "It's cool that he's Head Boy. You must be proud." He paused briefly. "Are you both... happy?" That didn't sound as awkward as he felt it did, did it? Max just wanted to know if Ellie was happy. That was an okay question, right?

He thought it was, but the warmth rising in his cheeks tried to convince him otherwise.
