Formal duels have a set of rules, the standard dueling rules, and they take place in tournaments or when one wizard challenges another.
Informal duels do not respect he standard dueling rules, instead the duelists agree on a set a different rules. A common rule for informal duels is, well, no rules, and the two duel to the death. Dueling to the death is illegal, but other forms of informal dueling are not, they simply aren't practiced in tournaments. Needless to say we will be practicing formal duels with the standard rules and mannerisms.
Not that that is settled, do any of you know what the standard rules are? One per student, and one at the time." Katrina raised her hand again.
"One rule is that you should not have physical contact between the duellists." she somehow knew it was correct, she thought. But she had a question too.
"Professor, is the rule I just said needed to be followed in both the informal and formal duels?" Quote:

"Now I would like to just take a few moments to explain this." He said and stomped his foot twice. He was talking about the lunar phase stage. "Duelists begin here." He was standing in the middle of it, where the full moon was positioned. "Then, both duelists will walk away from each other until they reach the star." There was a star at both ends of the stage. "There they take their positions and begin to duel. As the duel proceeds the participants may walk closer to each other, but neither duelist may walk past the full moon, into the other duelist's area. Understood?" That was fairly simple, but if they had questions they could ask. "Before we begin, there's something else that needs to be done." He gestured to the Slytherin boy, then spoke. "As Mister Kim mentioned, your wands must be in perfect condition. In tournaments, there will be a qualified wand expert or wandmaker to analyse the wands. This process is known as wand weighing. Now, I am no expert, but I will do my best to check your wands and make sure that they are suitable for dueling." He put his own wand away, and walked to the edge of the stage. "Make a line here, and bring me your wands." OOC: Please make sure that you have a wand in your profile under "Wand Type" before you post your character showing Gnaeus his or her wand. It can be the one you received from Ollivander's Shop or you can make one up. After handing the wand don't walk away, it will take only a few moments. Merlin's beard, Katrina thought. Wand weighing? Who needed that? But, hey, who wants to know if their wand is safe and not damaged?
Katrina went to the back of the line and waited for her turn.
She waited for 5 - 10 minutes until her turn.
"My name's Katrina Marie Hudson, a First Year Slytherin," the girl said. "My wand is 10" ebony with a dragon heartstring core and a spinnable quality."
