I had an interesting experience: I saw the movie twice, both times with people who never read the books. In both cases, the person was confused over the Prince's tale, and asked if Snape was Harry's real father. It could have been coincidence, but I'm thinking it might have been a little confusing for those who haven't read the books. Looking at it through their perspective, the scene did come kind of out of the blue.
