He felt stupid for talking like his. He'd never had a conversation like this with anyone. Even his Aunt, the person who'd cared for him since Damien could remember. It made him feel vulnerable and exposed. But Lockhart was a good guy -- and Damien believed he wouldn't think any less for wanting to open up.
"I opened myself up to someone," he began again after a short pause. "Turns out that she -- chose someone else."
"Not that I'm upset about that part," he added quickly. Damien wasn't about to admit he was upset over a girl who was only a friend to him.
"It's just -- I was finally starting to be completely honest with someone. Only to find out that she'd rather open up to someone else ..."
It didn't even make sense in his mind when he said it aloud -- so what made him think Treyen would understand?
As Damien spoke, Treyen wanted to chuckle and say 'Yeah', but the situation didn't call for something like that.
"Yes," he nodded, all serious, and he liked that about Damien, because whilst Treyen could have deep and even philosophical conversations, it felt good to just talk about the weather sometimes.
Not that he ever talked about the weather with Damien, though.
He made no comment and leaned on the chair as he kept on listening. So, Damien opened up to someone...probably a girl, right? Yes, a girl. Okay. Treyen wasn't even thinking about who the girl might be, because now Damien was opening up to him, and that was a big deal for the boy next to him.
Maybe he wasn't thinking about who the girl might be, because there was only one on his mind.
"But that's a risk you have to take," certainly one that Treyen knew just how awful the consequences of opening up to someone might be.
"Yet I do think you care a lot for her," sort of like Arya had thought Treyen liked Ellie even before he knew. However, he wasn't saying that Damien liked this girl, simply that he cared for her.
"The choosing part did upset you, otherwise you would be fine," and their Common Room would have never suffered.
