Alex chuckled at his response to her question. "Clever loophole. I see what you did there." she said, rolling her eyes slightly. She smiled, so he knew that she was kidding. She wasn't actually annoyed. That would be a really stupid thing to be annoyed about.
Alex was confused about what he said. Not trustworthy? Buy him off? What was going on?! "Why would someone want to lock you up?" she asked, instantly regretting it. He might get mad at her for asking a such a personal question. "I am sorry if that is too personal. You don't have to answer it." she said, smiling weakly. Even though she wanted to know, she wasn't going to pressure him into telling her.
"Thank you." The man gave a brief laugh, a small smile tugging at the edge of his lips.
"For respecting my privacy, but that is one of the things I'm willing to talk about."
Suddenly looking tired, Nero took a seat beside the young woman.
"I have done some dark deeds in the past. Nothing out of malice or greed, I only did what needed to be done for the good of the world." Though he looked young for his age, the years could be heard in the timber of his voice.
"I did the black work that nobody could know about. Things you don't talk about in polite company."
