Turning to look at Mia with his eyes wide he frowned. "What'd I do? He started it." Yup because THAT was mature. And why was he feeling better all of a sudden? UGH! Pulling his plate back toward him he took a piece of bacon and bit into it smugly as he looked at James.
"I'm sure you do. But don't tell everyone our secret Jaaaaaaaames," he said pretending to bat his eyelashes at him. "They might find out why you can't keep a girlfriend," he said leaning into the table in a whisper.
Seeing the look he got when he mentioned the birthday Ivan took another bite of his bacon and stared at him innocently. "We couldn't find you after awhile. Seemed you had...disappeared.... "Lucky for you I'm a caring friend and went searching to make sure you hadn't fallen into a ditch or anything." Yeah...take that Wilkes. He gave both of them a glance and focused on the food in front of him now.
Ivan was pushing his luck, but Jim knew the guy was joking. Still, it was difficult to stay cool and casual. He thought about puppies and Quidditch and gardening and ice cream. Pleasant things that didn't get him twitchy. It was a good way of saving Ivan's face from getting a pummeling.
"And so now finish it." He suggested quietly, giving Ivan a
look. "Thats low." Ouch. The girlfriend thing. He was mostly over Marie but still...
...still. Not
quite.
He swallowed roughly.
"Yeah, you're a good friend. But sometimes you can be a right tosser." Ivan knew that well enough to be sure. He was CLEARLY doing it on purpose and enjoying himself. Jim sighed to himself and tucked into his fourth plate of food.

Neptune flashed a look to Jimmy.

"Lucky. He's very lucky." ...babbling. Neptune thought about putting her hand on Ivan's mouth as a better way to hush him, but she was kind of paralyzed in her seat with whirry thoughts.
"She'd feel Ravenclaw every day if she weren't such a loyal little 'puff." Loyal to Nik. Yeah Jim was so sure...
grin. If nothing else, Ivan and Finla.... yeah. Well. They'd be all tongues out, eager puppy dog doing things that behavioral training oughta cure them of.
... Jake.
Right.

There was a smart aleck retort on the tip of her tongue and it almost burst out but she managed to bite it back and return Neptune's smile. "Well your house does seem to have the best looking guys." But that's not why she was over here. "I was just giving James his birthday present even though it's a bit late."
Why would she hear from Jake? "Um...no. We weren't exactly close." Okay there was that time up in the owlery when she helped him out but then she seemed to be helping everyone out. "Did you two break up?"
Mia too stared at Ivan and if she was any good at magic, she would have cast the 'Silenco' charm at him. She gave him a look. "What is wrong with you?"
He grinned gently at Mia. She was quite gullible wasn't she? He chuckled and reached over, using his little finger to lift her jaw up again. He was definitely teasing. Whether or not others could tell, they probably
imagined at least.
He ate some more of his food while Mia spoke to Ivan and then lifted his head to glance between her and Neptune.
"She made me this scarf and this... this... man-bracelet." Errr. He grinned and modeled both.
He tried to pretend like he wasn't interested in the Jake thing. The ... break up thing. He went quiet, not even chiming in with comments about how 'EVERYTHING was wrong with Ivan and the healers were BAFFLED', like he usually might have.
