A hectic ride, it sure had been, much more hectic than even the last one when he was first appointed as a prefect. And now, as he could see clearly, all firsties were sorted and sitting at his table... great...
Adressing them all from the beginning of the table, he said "Welcome, new people, to the proud house of Slytherin..." Sucking for a welcoming speech? Pretty much. He didn't even introduce Iris or their head of house. It didn't occur to him, in fact. Well. This was the best he could do with so much on his mind. Chuckling uneasily, he waved at them and started to look for the faces he would greet personally. Marie wasn't here. Pout. And Iris was talking to a small kid... How come no one was there to greet him?! He was the PREFECT, after all! Mweh...
After almost walking the whole table, he finally saw a familiar face--someone he could talk to for a while, at least, before Marie arrived.
"Hey Sierra," he greeted the girlwith the warmest smile he could muster with his head so full, offering her friends around a smile and a wave as well. "How was your summer?"
Naaaw, a new Slytherin girl... and Evan DID catch her walk towards the table, even if he may have missed the glorious part of 'SLYTHERIN' yell of the Hat.
"Welcome to the best House," he said, grinning. It WAS true and known; they were the best. Hehe. And she was aware of it too, by the looks of her walking. Good.
"I'm Evan Cartwright, your prefect."
As he was greeting the other girl, some little girl else rushed to the table--it even seemed she was more interested into the food than the Slytherin itself. As he got himself ready to high-five her, she dramatically fell and he had to bite his lips not to laugh. It was a horrible thing, of course, even without the whole SCHOOL watching her, but he just couldn't help it.
Controlling his reflexes, he looked over her to see if she was OK. She seemed so, but he asked nevertheless, just in case. He was an expert at the healing charms, after the... interesting summer.
"You alright, mate?" he asked with a warm smile. Yeah, welcoming the new people did help him keep his mind off... some certain people.
Smiling at the other girl as she sat somewhere close, he said "Welcome to the best house." A grin there. "I'm Evan Cartwright, your prefect." Hand-shake.
A shy and silent newbie? Aww... watching her help herself for a moment, not to scare her off immediately, Evan reached his hand out at last to welcome her.
"Welcome!" he said warmly, as he smiled. He didn't even repeat 'the best house' part, it was obvious now. "Evan Cartwright, your prefect."
And now an out-going one, eh?
"Welcome, Faith..." Evan said as he scooted over to make space for her. Since there was NO Marie or Mina or Iris, he could sit with the new people as well and get to know them.
"I'm Evan Cartwright, the prefect." Tehee. He looked over at Iris to see if she heard the stress on 'the', or not. Well, he was 'the' prefect now, since she got the Head Girl position...
Iris looked up as Evan entered the Great Hall. Nodding in acknowledgement to him, she took a sip of her water. As he greeted some of the younger kids, Iris scoffed. THAT'S his idea of a speech? ... Pathetic. Iris wasn't going to stand up and make it heard here though. She didn't need to. Besides, the best place to hold meetings is in the Common Room, everyone knows that.
In between looking at her plate, glancing across to the doors (in the hope to see a best-friendly face) and staring at the staff table, Iris had really nothing to do. She just sat there, waiting for one of her friends to show up...
Listening to Evan - as he wasn't that far away from her - talk to younger kids, the Head Girl thought to herself that perhaps she should go talk to some of the Firsties, too. But then Evan said something that kinda hurt, oddly.
He's THE Prefect, is he? Well...
Leaning down the table a little, Iris cocked her head at her CO-Prefect.
"The Slytherin Prefect, are you, Cartwright?" Iris' mouth curled into a sour smile,
"Oooh, no; you're not. I'm still the female prefect. My title is Head Girl and Prefect." Iris eyed Evan for a moment, then leant back in her seat. She didn't even bother introducing herself to the kid Evan was talking to...

Biting her lower lip a bit, Kurumi set the cookies down, along with a note saying that they were from her and NOT poisoned - despite that being the popular belief last term - and began to walk along the row of seated students back towards the front of the room.
Being perfectly honest, Kurumi's cookies were one of Iris' favourite things about the Feasts. Her cookies were so cool! As the little Gryffindor made her rounds, Iris grinned at her.
"Kurumi!" She called, as the kid put the cookies down,
"What've you made this time?" the Head Girl asked, as she stood up and walked down to the middle of the table where the girl was.

Thankfully, he had his future planned out. He looked at her, then looked at the enchanted ceiling. It never really hit him, because he had heard about it often so it kindof became normal when he first walked into the great hall. But now that he looked at it, it was amazing. It made him feel warm inside. He looked back at Iris. "Any idea what you might be doing after Hogwarts?" he asked. "I want to be a prefect too when I'm older," he said and glanced at the staff table. Or a teacher... Then he could return to Hogwarts. But he had made his mind, he wanted to be a wandmaker. Well he wanted to be a lot. He wanted to be a cool Quidditch player. He wanted to be a prefect. He wanted to be a wandmaker. But for now he just needed to stay Hugo.
Iris grinned. It was easy to read younger kids. They don't hide their feelings from their faces very well.
...
What did she want to do when she's older? WHY do people keep asking her this?!
Just lemme enjoy my last year as a kid happily! Iris looked at Hugo. Before she said anything, he'd announced that he'd like to be a prefect when he's older. The blonde smiled at him.
"I think you'd make a fantastic prefect." And that's the truuuuuth. Nod.
"But what do I want to do... Gosh. I try not to think about it, honestly. Next year, I'd quite like to go travelling. Visit all the wizarding communities around the world, y'know? And career wise... I've never told anyone this, but I'd really like to own the Leaky one day. Or Floreans. Hospitality Management... I think it's something I'd enjoy. They're the only plans and ideas I really have though, so I guess I'm kinda screwed if they don't happen..." Iris drank some more of her water. She really didn't enjoy talking about her future. She liked Hogwarts too much.
Maybe she could go to University... and come back to Hogwarts as a teacher, one day.
What on Earth would she teach, though? Charms, maybe... Or Arithmancy.
