Draco rocked her soothingly from the floor, her face buried in the crook of his neck. She continued to sob, not paying attention to Harry’s yelling or struggling or the fact that he got free of Remus’s grasp. She heard other things happening around her, but didn’t pay attention. All that mattered was the fact that he was dead—that he wasn’t coming back.

After several minutes, she felt someone else’s hand on her back. One that she would know anywhere. Normally, she would be happy to have him hold her in these situations, but not now.

Draco’s grip slackened as Remus bent down to pick her up. Once she was in his arms, she struggled to get free. He was confused as he let her down, but then the realization hit when she started hitting every part of him. And he didn’t stop her; he knew that she needed this.

“How could you?” she screamed. “You let him leave! You let him leave when he wasn’t supposed to! This is your fault!” she screamed as she kept hitting his chest hard.

He tried to put his hands on her shoulders, but she slapped them away.

“Emily, please,” Remus pleaded, his voice cracking in pain. He lost one of his best friends tonight, he wasn’t about to lose his daughter too.

“NO! It’s your fault! You never told me about him! You didn’t let me get to know him!” she screamed. “Admit it!” she cried.

“It’s my fault,” he whispered and she finally stopped hitting him, sinking down to the floor with him as he held her tightly. She tried to push him away, but he kept holding her.

“I want Draco,” she said as she pushed him again. Remus’s face crumpled in pain as he let her go and Draco took his place. She stared at him as he staggered backwards and away from her, out of her sight.

“I didn’t get to say goodbye,” she cried into Draco’s shoulder. He rubbed soothing circles into her back as he tried to calm her down.

“It’s going to be okay, Ems,” he murmured.

“How can you say that?” she asked suddenly, pulling away from his embrace. He looked at her in shock as she stood up and he followed her actions.

“Wh-what?” he asked in confusion.

“How dare you say everything is going to be okay? It’s not! IT’S NOT! Everything is ruined! Everything is gone!” she screamed.

Draco tried to cup her face in his hands, but she stumbled away from him.

“Emily,” he said carefully, but she shook her head violently. She was aware that everyone’s eyes in the room were on her, but she didn’t care. She didn’t care about anything anymore—just Sirius.

“No! I want to be alone,” she whispered as she ran to the dark corner of the wall and curled herself into a ball, her knees up against her chest and her head buried in her arms. She continued to sob uncontrollably as her finger nails clawed at her scalp.

“Let her go,” she heard Remus tell someone, who she assumed was Draco.

She felt like he was talking to her instead of about her, except that his sentence was “Let him go.” How could she let him go? She never got to know him. She never got to grow up with him. She lost both of her parents without really knowing either. And it shattered everything inside of her.

She only wanted one person to comfort her now, and he was eternally unavailable. Because he was dead. No, he wasn’t simply dead. He was murdered. And he wasn’t coming back. And that was her fault. This train of thought brought on a new round of sobs, not that there were any rounds, so to speak. Her sobs just kept running into each other, never resting, never calming down.
