Chapter 11

Over the next week, Raven spent her evenings with her uncle doing her detention, or as she liked to call it, “a major violation of child labor laws.” She did end up serving her detention and served it impeccably.

Snape tried to the best of his ability to make Raven angry. He would come through and do a sort of white glove test with the shelves in his private pantry.

“It appears that you have missed several spots on this shelf. And this ingredient doesn’t belong here,” he said rather snobbishly.

“Oh, I‘m sorry.” Raven had to admit that him coming over every five or so minutes to critique every little detail was frustrating, but she was never going to allow Snape to physically bother her. She would just smile and fix what ever mistake she made. “Let me get right to that.”

Snape would peer over shoulder, observing her every move. He watched as she picked up the misplaced bottle and wiped it with a cloth. She then took the bottle and placed it in its appropriate place, rearranging the other bottles to make space. Then, to clean the spots on the shelf, she stood on the ladder and picked up each bottle, wiped underneath it and put it down, remembering to keep the label facing front.

“Was that what you had in mind?” she asked, wiping her brow.

The fact that she wasn’t lashing out at Snape seemed to upset him more as the days went on. He couldn’t find anything wrong with her bottling of the ingredients. Raven thought that he should have known that she knew how to prepare and bottle ingredients, her father brewed potions for a living while in America. It was as simple for Raven as washing her hair.

Raven served her detention without any kind of test from Snape, despite his best efforts. He nit-picked every minor detail, from the bottles not being flush against the edge of the shelf to a bottle’s label being a smidge away from facing the front. Raven did not let a single thing Snape had to say bother her. However, by the end of the week Raven was ready to never see him again.

“The student pantry is cleaned and organized. I did have to re-label a few items because they were falling off.” Raven loved doing a few extra things to irritate Snape. “I believe it’s Friday and I do believe that means it’s the end of the week. I have completed all tasks set before me, and then some, without so much as a mutter of discontent. Is my detention over now?”

“You did serve your detention well. However a little too well.” Snape was clearly annoyed by Raven’s lack of outbursts through the week. “I know that you only did your job out of spite. You wanted to prove a point and you did.”

“Sir, is my detention over?” she asked again.

“Yes. But I assure you the next time you serve detention, it won’t be as pleasant.”

“I’m sure it will. But I assure you, there won‘t be a next time.” Raven turned and walked towards the door. Just as she put her hand on the door knob, Snape stopped her.

“As much as I enjoy you’re silence, if you have something to say, you need to say it.”

Raven never turned away from the door. “What angers you more, Uncle? That my father made you responsible for me? Or are you angry because I beat you at your little detention game?”

“Your detention was not meant to be a game.”

“Regardless or what it was called, you had a plan for this week. You had a plan to control my anger issues. You failed, miserably. Here is the thing,” she turned away from the door to face her uncle, “I don’t think that upset you as much as I would like to hope it would. I think you’re frustrated because I was never part of your life plan. You never planned to be responsible for the well being of someone. You look at me as a hindrance, a thorn in your side. Tell me I’m wrong.”

“It would be easy to tell you that you’re wrong. But that would be a lie.”

His honesty, although it was what she wanted, hurt. Hearing the truth was maybe not what she really wanted to hear. “Then why keep me around?”

“It’s true that you were never a part of the plan for my life. But I made a promise to my brother. I must take my responsibility and do the best I can with it. It would be a good idea for you to try and do the same.”

“Then start accepting who I am.”

“I can accept who you are. But your constant sarcasm and back talk are not acceptable. I should blame my brother for that aspect of your personality but I don’t think he had anything to do with it.”

“My father taught me to stand up for what’s right! Everyone here is so afraid to tell anyone the truth in fear of repercussion from the wrong people. If no one else is going to stand up to them, who better than me.”

“Your cause is noble but your actions are sometime disrespectful and dangerous.”

“Why? Because I say what should be said to those that need to hear it? I could start pulling out my wand and blasting people. Does that sound familiar?”

Snape looked defeated. At the same time, Raven didn’t want to hear anything else he had to say. It seemed both of their points were going unnoticed.

“It’s late. You did good work this week,” mumbled Snape.

Sincere compliments seemed hard for Snape to give. On the other hand, taking a compliment from Snape was hard for Raven to digest. However, considering how tired she was, she thought that she would try.

“Thank you,” she said.

She walked toward the door and hesitated. Raven felt like there was more to say. Instead of pressing the issue, she decided to leave.

When she arrived at the common room, George was waiting up for her on the couch. She plopped down next to him and leaned into his shoulder.

“It’s over. No more hard labor,” she said sounding exhausted.

“So, you got through with no incident? I’m impressed,” said George, and then kissed her head.

“Yeah, no incident at all.” Raven was troubled by her conversation with Snape. She wondered to herself if he really deserved her ill treatment of him. She realized that someone who was never a father, or father material for that matter, suddenly inheriting a fifteen year-old girl has to be unsettling. At the same time, her suddenly having to look to another man as a father figure in her life is equally as hard. Raven pondered if their relationship will ever get past the anger and resentment and finally live their lives as a family.

The end of the year was drawing to an end. Everyone was extremely busy studying for end of the year exams. Raven had never felt so overwhelmed in her life. All of these assignments and exams were almost too much to comprehend. Raven found herself many nights in the library and even studying till the wee hours of the morning.

One Thursday afternoon, after Divination class, Raven was sitting in the common room thankful that her exams were over and she could finally relax. She sat on the couch in front of the fireplace and closed her eyes for a moment when Harry interrupted her.

"Hey Raven?" asked Harry, putting his hand on her shoulder. Raven opened her eyes and sat straight up. She knew she wasn't sleeping, but she got so comfortable that Harry completely startled her. "Sorry to bother you, but we are going down to Hagrid's to be there for him when they execute Buckbeak."

"That's today?" asked Raven, her heart still pumping hard from being surprised. "With all of the exams this week I completely forgot."

"Do you want to come?" he asked. "Ron and Hermione are coming as well."

"I don't think that would be appropriate, Harry," she said. "You three are extremely close to him and I don't know him at all. Besides if a Ministry official is there, I might say something to them and it's likely it won't be good."

"No problem," Harry said. "I'll see you later."

"Yeah, bye," Raven said as he, Ron and Hermione left the common room.

As they left, she thought about Buckbeak. He is such a gentile animal if you know how to handle him. Because of Draco's jealousy of Harry, Buckbeak has to die. Then her thoughts became livid. If Draco hadn't been so stupid, Harry would be going down to Hagrid's for a pleasant visit. Just then she felt a warm kiss on her cheek.

"You look deep in thought," said George as he sat down next to her. "What are you thinking about?"

"Just thinking about Hagrid and this mess with Buckbeak," she said, still deep in thought. "I hate Draco! If only he would go away!" she said raising her voice a little.

"Hey, hey," he said grabbing her hand and holding it tightly. "Let's not talk about him. Let's talk about my mom."

"Excuse me? Your mother?" Raven asked looking at George like he was losing his mind.

"I got an owl from her today and she wants to meet you. She is inviting you to come spend a day with us over the summer, provided it's okay with your uncle," he said pulling out the letter and handing it to Raven.

"Of course I will come over. Snape won't care," she said smiling. "After a couple of weeks together he’ll be glad to be rid of me for a day."

"Can anyone say no to you?" George asked with a curious smile.

"Well, yes. But I wouldn't recommend it," she said with a grin that turned into a laugh for the two of them.

Raven and George joined Fred and Lee later and enjoyed a fairly quiet dinner. Occasionally Fred would spit out an idea for an end of school prank, George would offer up an opinion, but it was only brief. As dinner progressed, Raven got a sick feeling in her stomach, not from the food, but a feeling as though something bad was happening.

As the night went on the feeling was progressively getting worse. Just as dinner was ending, she heard a voice in her head. It was Snape. He wasn’t in the Great Hall. Something had to be wrong. She turned around again to see her uncle, looking frantic, coming in from the side door of the Great Hall and rushing towards Dumbledore. Excusing herself from her friends, she made her way to the front of the hall and walked up to her uncle who was in deep conversation with Dumbledore. As she approached the two professors, they looked at her with concern, and then looked back at each other.

"You wanted to see me?" she asked hesitantly. Raven could sense that they were hiding something.

"Yes, Miss Snape," said Dumbledore getting up from the staff table. "Your uncle will fill you in. Now, if you both will excuse me I have some business to attend to."

"I didn't interrupt anything, did I?" Raven asked looking at Dumbledore as he walked away.

"No, but let's go," he said rushing her out of the Great Hall.

"Okay," she said questionably. "Am I in trouble? Because I didn't do it and I don't feel like fighting with you today."

"Not now, Raven," he said angrily.

"Where are we going?" she asked. There was no answer from Snape, he just kept walking. His strides were so long it took two of Raven's steps plus an occasional little jog for her to keep up with him. Then it hit her why Snape was so frantic and she stopped walking. It took several steps for Snape to realize that she wasn't next to him anymore.

"Don't stop! We have to go," he said walking back to her then grabbing her arm and pulling her a few steps before Raven pulled away.

"NO!" she snapped as she took a few steps away from her uncle. "They found him didn't they? They found Sirius Black and he's here."

Snape stared at Raven for a moment. Raven couldn't tell by the expression on his face, if he wanted to yell at her or to crumble.

"Where is he?" she asked softly. Her heart began pounding so fast she could hear it in her ears. She wanted to see Black, but what would she say to him?

"In the tower waiting for the Dementors," he said smugly. "I forbid you to go to him. As a matter of fact, you‘re going to London. You will stay at the Leaky Cauldron until I get you."

"Excuse me?" she asked angrily. "You cannot forbid me to do anything and you‘re not sending me anywhere. Now if you'll stand aside, I have another uncle to see."

As she walked away, Snape once again grabbed her arm. Raven looked up at her uncle and noticed he had fear in his eyes.

"He doesn't know you. You are not like him. There is a very good possibility he could make you angry. Do you really want to be angry with him when the Dementors come and take his soul? Do you want to be angry with him, when he becomes worse than dead, an empty shell of a human being?" he asked this in such a way that reminded Raven of the times when her father would scold her. Angry but calm enough to think that they got their point across.

Raven looked at her arm, which was still in Snape's tightening grip. She made him let go of her and she walked over to a nearby window where she could see the tower where Black was being held.

"You're right. He may make me angry. He could make me sad, happy, scream or smile," she said calmly then turned back to face her uncle. "This is my only shot to talk to my mother's brother. My chance to talk to someone who was close to her. My chance to find out about her."

Snape turned away from Raven and put his head down and let out a sigh. She knew that he had some animosity towards Black, but he was going to have to understand that there would be no backing down from this. Raven was going to see Black whether Snape liked it or not.

"If I don't, uncle, I will never have another chance. Asking Narcissa Malfoy or Bellatrix Lestrange about my mother would be looking for trouble," she said walking behind him.

"How do you know you are not looking for trouble by asking Black?" he said turning around swiftly.

"I feel that what my mother wrote about him in her journal is true," she said then paused for a moment to think about the uncle standing before her. Raven sensed fear in him and not just for her. It seemed that he felt that if Black was innocent and let go, she would rather live with Black instead of Snape. Snape was afraid, it seemed, of being alone.

"If is makes you feel any better," she continued, "my father wanted me to live with you. And although you're a pain to deal with and somehow enjoy making me suffer, I will respect his wishes and continue to live with you. Meeting my other uncle will not change that. Besides, I'm getting used to your stubbornness and I'm actually starting to enjoy arguing with you. To have to get used to that with someone else would be severely damaging to me."

Raven gave her distraught uncle her confident smile in an effort to reassure him of her intentions. It seemed to work because before another word was spoken he summoned a broom and gave it to her.

“You need to hurry,” he said. “The Dementors will be here soon.”
