This is a shorter chapter. Short and sweet. Before you read, this is probably not book canon. I don't remember to be honest. Parts of this, at least the end, you might be saying, "uh, Heather, that didn't happen." Well, I'm sorry but at the time I wrote this I watched the third movie a million times and couldn't get it out of my head. And sometimes I can't differentiate between the two. Sometimes my brain can't do much. Anyway, hope you enjoy! Oh and tell your friends! Enjoy!

Chapter 12

Raven ran outside as fast as she could, hopped on the broom and immediately flew towards the tower. She had no clue as to what she was going to say to Black. There was really no time to think about it before she reached her destination. She came in slow and quietly landed on the tower in front of a small room with a cell door. Inside was a scruffy looking man, who looked as though he hadn't bathed in years. Raven's first thought was he was nothing like the man that her mother described. She knew there would be some wear and tear from being in Azkaban for twelve years but she couldn't help but think if it was really him or some weird forest man that was mistaken for Black.

"Are you going to tell me what you're doing here or are you just going to stand there and gawk at me?" he asked with a rough scratchy voice.

"There is no need to be hateful," she said coming out of her deep thoughts about her first impression of him. "I've come to talk to you."

"What does a young Hogwarts student like yourself want to speak to me about?" he asked.

"My, my! Aren't we hasty? The Dementors won't be here for a while, so we have plenty of time," she said walking up closer to the cell door.

"I'm sorry if I don't want to spend my last few moments with my soul in tact to talk to a kid," he said turning away from her.

Raven loved this exchange for some reason. She realized at that moment that she does have a dark side. Raven wanted to spill the fact that she was his niece. But wasn't ready for him to hear that. It seemed that toying with him felt justified. Her goal was to stay cool and collected.

"Tell me what you know about Persephone Black. Who was she?" she asked like an interrogator. Sirius had no clear expression on his face. Raven wondered for a moment if she had crossed the line.

"Persephone. I have not said that name in years," he said quietly. "How do you know her?"

"I don't know her. That's why I asked," she said. Raven felt warranted in what she said. All she knew was that Persephone was her mother. She had no idea who she was or what she was like. Therefore she didn't know her, she only knew of her.

“Why should I tell you? Not to sound rude but I’m going through a bit of a crisis and don’t know if going down memory lane is appropriate.”

“The way I see it, it’s not like you have anything else to do. I mean, you are sitting there contemplating your life, are you not?”

There was a small silence as Sirius thought about what Raven had said.

"I haven't spoken to her since I found out that she was going to marry your potions professor's brother, Tobias Snape Jr.," he said standing and walking over to the cell door. "Persephone was a good person despite all that she went through growing up. She had a big heart, and she was funny. Very funny. She definitely got that from her mother, not mine. You see...she was my half sister."

"Yeah, I know that much. So what did she go through?" Raven knew the answer already but wanted someone else to say it and maybe shed some information that she didn‘t already have.

"My mother never liked her," Black said. "She was the child of my father’s previous marriage. When my mother got married to my dad, she convinced him that Persephone couldn't live there, mainly because she did not exhibit powers when she was young; my mother thought she was a squib. It would have been a dishonor to the Black name to have squib in the family."

"So let’s fast forward a little. Persephone goes to live with your aunt and uncle under the idea that she is their adopted daughter. One day it’s discovered that she has powers but your mother still isn’t going to let her live in her house. Andromeda, your nice cousin, lets Persephone know the truth; that she a true Black and that your mother is basically an evil, resentful woman. Have I got it right so far?”

“How did you know she lived with my aunt and uncle? Wait! How do you know any of this?”

“I’ll tell you in a bit. Please, continue.”

Sirius looked at her with curiosity. Raven seemed to touch on a topic that hit a nerve. "When it was discovered she had powers, mother was more annoyed than anything. She never wanted the truth to come out because it inconvenienced her to have to tell people the truth," he said sounding rather annoyed himself at his mother's behavior.

"What about your father?" she asked, never knowing her grandfather’s side of the story. "Surely since Persephone was his daughter, he should have had more say so in her life."

"It never bothered him one way or the other," he said. "He got to see her as her an uncle and didn't have to listen to my mother complain all the time. My mother was a very forceful woman." The expression on his face changed from frustration about his family to, again, one of curiosity reflected towards Raven. "How do you know about my sister? She was never fully recognized as a member of the Black family. This story was never made public.”

"In a minute," she said quickly not wanted to reveal herself just yet. "Why did you stop talking to her?"

Sirius looked down as if to think about how to word the question properly. Then he popped his head back up. "I did not support her marriage to Snape. It was not unknown that her fiancé supported You Know Who. She was better than that, better than him, better than that miserable family. Last I heard they fled to America probably because of his crimes. I never heard or spoke of that name after their marriage," he said quietly.

There was an awkward silence between them. Sirius stared at Raven while Raven pondered whether to walk away or tell him the truth.

"Are you innocent?" she blurted.

"Would I be here waiting for Dementors if I was?" he snapped.

"Yes!" Raven snapped back at him. Knowing the ministry, there were plenty of prisoners in Azkaban who were likely innocent. Sirius was not the first and not the last. “Considering the people that put you there, of course I believe that you could be here undeservingly!”

"Why so many questions? Why are you so curious about me and Persephone?" he shouted.

"I need to know if she was right about you!" Raven felt the truth about to come out. She couldn‘t remember her heart ever beating so fast and so hard. "I just needed to know that what she said is true."

"Who? Who told you all of this?" he asked.

"Persephone!" she said. There was another pause between the two, more out of shock as to what just came out of her mouth. "Persephone is my mother. You…are my uncle.”

His mouth fell open. "She had a daughter? You're my niece?” Sirius took a few steps away from the cell door. He rubbed his forehead then marched back up to the door. “How is Persephone?"

This is the one topic, more than any other, that she had been dreading if she were to ever get this moment. After she swallowed what felt like her stomach, she told him all she knew of her mother. Raven also broke the hard news to him that her mother passed during childbirth. She told Sirius about the journal her mother kept, and then spoke of her father and his recent death. The whole time she spent talking, Sirius was listening intently. He seemed to be sad at the loss of his sister, but was happy to hear that Raven's father assumed responsibility and took good care of Raven.

"So you're living with Severus," he said, leaning up against the side of his cell. "My apologies."

"Surprisingly, he is trying to do as my father did and take responsibility for me and do the best he can by me," she said with a smile. "Truth is, he really does care for me and wants the best for me. He just has a strange way of showing it and I don't give him much help."

Sirius never took his eyes off of Raven during a still silence. "You know you do remind me of her," he said walking up closer to the bars of the cell. "She had a good heart and I see that in you," he said holding out his hand. "I never got your name."

"Raven," she said grabbing his hand. She glanced over at the clock tower. They had been talking for a long time. Raven realized if she was caught up here, her troubles would be bigger than she could fathom.

"I need to go," she said sadly.

"You do," he said letting go of her hand. "Can you do me one favor?" Raven nodded as she mounted her broom.

"If you answer my question," she said. Sirius agreed. "Are you innocent?"

"Yes," he said. Raven smiled at him and stepped toward the edge of the tower.

"Tell Harry Potter that everything will be okay," he said. "And I’m sorry we didn't have more time to spend together, Raven."

"I’m sure he knows Sirius, and I do too," she replied. Raven looked around and saw a dark figure moving towards the tower. For a moment she thought it was a Dementor, but then realized it was Buckbeak. "Sirius, you will not see a Dementor tonight and we will have more time to speak. That I can promise you! Oh, and I was never here!"

Once again she smiled at Sirius, gave him a wink and then took off toward the castle. As she got further away from the tower, she noticed that the figure was Buckbeak and riding him was Harry and Hermione. Sirius Black was free.
