Rafael was born early in the morning on Sunday October the 31st when his parents were getting ready for the upcoming All Souls Day. Rafael is the youngest of three siblings. Although he is younger than his sisters he has grown to be very protective of them and their children as well. Growing up on the sea coast of São Sebastião, Brazil Rafael and his siblings attended a small Waldorfian Primary School for wizarding families. Although at the time he was not showing any signs of magic his parents wanted to raise him around magic because they believed he had the potential for magic. Rafael’s magic didn’t show until he was ten years old when a local neighborhood bully that also attended the school tried to drown him. When his body and magic knew that he was in danger gills appeared on his neck and he was suddenly able to breathe under water. When he told his parents what had happened they immediately spoke to the school about the altercation with the student in question. The school informed his parents that the bully was leaving for the Castelobruxo Academy of Magic in the fall and suggested, as Rafael and the student didn’t get along that he attend a different school upon reaching his eleventh birthday.

When Rafael was eleven he received a letter from the Castelbruxo Academy, Hogwarts Academy of Magic, and one from the Durmstrang Institute of Magic. His parents, having just returned from the Institute were thrilled that the school had taken an interest in their son and his skills. Rafael’s mother Ana had recently accepted a position to work as an assistant to the Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards. Upon his acceptance to Durmstrang Rafael began practicing speaking more in German and English as those were dominant languages at the school.

While at Durmstrang Rafael took a strong interest in the combat team and different learning experiences the school provided for the students. It was here that he explored his interest in curse breaking as well as explored his interests in combat. Although he was never a member of the school’s official combat team he did train with the team on a regular basis. Throughout his years at Durmstrang Rafael focused more of his energy on learning Arithmancy and numeric curse breaking. In the summer of his fifth year he attended a camp based out of São Sebastião Brazil focused on the noble art of curse breaking. To this day he still claims that this is the reason that took the time to go to university for Arithmancy & Curse breaking as this camp and the hands on experience they learned at the now defunct Junior Curse Breaking Academy is the main reason he applied to and furthered his education in the noble art of Arithmancy. While attending Durmstrang Rafael had a few relationships though none of them stuck as he was very determined on focusing on his education.
