In previous years we studied 'birth numbers' and what they mean to you." Rafael listened as Kitty spoke and quickly jotted down the main key points she had brought up…sure, she was a talkative one this Prefect…merlin it was like she had prepared for a debate…which was good, preparing was always a good thing right?
He was honestly quite pleased that a student had taken that much care for his class. “Nicely said Miss Valentine,” he smiled over to her and gave her a small nod…yes she was definitely a wordy one but she had good points and that was helpful…now she didn’t have to be as wordy as she had been but really there was no harm in it. Yet she wasn’t giving up on it, just wasn’t holding her breathe on the matter. And thus she was still attending classes, her feet making their way to the appropriate classroom when it was time, the girl making her way inside and taking note of things. “Good day, Professor,” she greeted, making her way to her seat. Making up her name tag, full name as instructed, Cass set it on the desk before eying the orange. Maybe later when she earned it with doing her best at what they were presented with. She didn’t want to get distracted with food and get completely lost.
Soon enough the man began class anyway and the Ravenclaw was listening as he spoke and described his plans. No cursebreaking it seemed but something else. Bloody poltergeists. But questions first…always questions. “Arithmancy would be the study of numbers and their various meanings,” she answered after raising her hand. It certainly felt right and her own words. “Its purpose would be…um…to try and find a connection between yourself and the world and numbers around you.”
Okay, maybe not the best with that one. Ah…Miss McNally had the floor – polite…that was the first thing he had noted about the way she had conducted herself in this class and the prior classes. ”Thank you Miss McNally,” Raf grinned as he took a rubberband ball off of his desk and proceeded to toss it into the air and catch it as he listened to what the students were saying. Well, at least Professor C isn’t mad at him, right? “S-sorry, professor.” He said in almost a whisper, sparing Azura a glance. Merlin. When did the professor arrive? Was he too enamoured with other stuff, lately? It doesn’t help, however, that Christmas is just around the corner. Three weeks off of school, and just hanging out with his family and friends in Japan? It sounds exciting! However, the idea of side-apparating didn’t appeal to him. He ought to ask his dad to book plane tickets instead.
Clearing his thoughts, and banishing the idea of vacation, Jace leaned back on his seat as he listened to the professor. Merlin, if it weren’t for Peeves and Miffy, they would’ve learned something about curse-breaking. A highly logical topic, that would surely satisfy Jace’s brain. After letting the others answer, Jace raised his hand to answer. “Arithmancy, to me at least, is not just about connecting numbers to ourselves. It is about exploring the magical properties of each number, and use it to counter or enhance a spell...like in breaking a curse...or to augment one.” He said scratching the side of his head. “Perhaps, one could treat it like...how Runes work...sans the galdr portion.”
Now...was that a textbook response? He was sure it wasn’t. But...it may have made the others sleepy. Not his fault though. Arithmancy can be boring, especially if one is not that inclined to magical maths. Again, not his problem. When Jace spoke Raf grinned. An honest grin, here was a kid that had taken the whole giving his own answer to a question and really he seemed to be going for it. ”very good point Mr. Reed, I do find that when working with numeric curses that indeed Arithmancy can be used to decipher what curse is being used” he paused for a moment before added ”often when you delve into this it is alongside Ancient Runes and can be used as a way to decipher the curses that are in place.” Yes, this kid was definitely going somewhere. Where was Ethan?! She was in desperate need of him....
Also, they'd already filled out nametags, as again, this wasn't the first lesson of the year. So, Liv took hers from her bag and plopped it down on the desk she'd chosen for today. She'd smeared glitter on it in her free time. "it's hard and confuses me." The blonde Gryffindor was already so defeated, couldn't you tell? "They were invented to confuse and stress people out. They should be ashamed of themselves, honestly." When Olivia Phillips spoke all Raf could do was frown. ”I am sorry that it stresses you our Miss Phillips” he paused for a moment as he made a mental note to talk to the whole class about what Miss Phillips had expressed – stress was the main reason he had flexible office hours. But oh ok class was starting "Its Magical Maths!" he replied, thats what always been in his head and now he's articulating it. Thats always a good thing right?
And what is its purpose? "To look impressive!" because MATHS. "I mean just look at where it can be applied on-- curse-breaking, tangible divination, even creating arts and music...." pretty darn impressive to him. Crazy-curl-kid was…well, excitable to say the least. Still, he had some good points as the kid seemed to excitably rattle off the different things that Arithmancy could be used with. ”Good point Mr. Salander, don’t get ahead of the class though – still, I have to say five points to Gryffindor thinking out of the box” see he was a nice Professor now wasn’t he? Who knew.. she bit her lip as the Professor spoke to Jace and she gently squeezed his hand.. hoping to reassure him that everything was all right..
All right Professor.. here came the text book version.. she apologizes in advances.. honestly!
She raised her hand and said "Arithmancy is the study of the magical properties of numbers.. it can also be used to predict the future by way of Numerology.." She said with a nod.. "For me personally it's challenging due to the fact that I struggle with numbers, but the magical aspect helps out and last year with curse breaking it was facinsting.."
Oops.. she talked too much.. sorry Professor.. Raf grinned when he listened to the young purple-eyed Ravenclaw’s words. Yes, she did have a point when she mentioned the ties to Numerology…”Nicely done Miss Snow,” Raf grinned. SPOILER!!: ”silent ones” Quote:

Well this took the wind out of Natalia's sails and she slid in her seat. She had come early, she had sat int he front. This was her subject, this was the thing she knew she liked. Not the other subjects, but numbers. She loved numbers.
She pulled out her parchment and began doodling, maybe she'd write a note. The younger students probably needed the reminder of what it was. Arthimancy to her was stability, numbers didn't change. It wasn't the definition everyone else was giving. It was so much more to her.
So for now she sat quietly and waited for it to become more challenging. Quote:

Even if they seemed to be more of a presence than usual, he didn't know why they would change the planned class topic.
So they were going to do a review instead? That wasn't nearly as exciting. It was his second year taking Arithmancy, but even for those who just started taking it this year, they had been in school for three months now. Hopefully everyone in the class knew what Arithmancy was by now.
It was a basic answer and he didn't have more to contribute other than what was already said by his classmates, so he took to doodling numbers in different font styles on the edge of the parchment. Hopefully he could be more engaged with the next question. Quote:

The Gryffindor turned his gaze to the board as the Professor began the lesson.
What was Arithmancy? He was pretty sure he already had notes on that somewhere closer to the front of his previous notepad but what the hell, why not have it in this one too? Especially with Kitty offering the definition his textbook had been telling him since the start of the year. Funny how things like that didn't change much.
Blaise leaned back in his seat, pondering whether Professor Carraro's question was rhetorical or not--because he asked what it meant to them and the Fourth Year couldn't help but think that the man would be upset if he gave an honest answer. Honesty tended to bother a lot of people around here, as he'd come to realize.
Maybe....maybe he'd just....keep his thoughts to himself. Just in case. Quote:

With a slightly worried look she watched the teacher and wondered how hard this lesson was going to be this time, she was absolutely bad in Arithmancy and she was worried that she would fail during the exams if she wasn’t going to get better anytime soon.
But when the first questions were asked she immediately decided to keep silent and to just listen to what others were saying, she wasn’t good in this lesson so why making a fool of herself by saying something stupid because she didn’t understood a thing about this whole subject? Looking out at the students in his charge he paused for a moment. ”Now I want to bring something that Miss Phillips said about Arithmancy having the purpose to confuse people, I get this. I used to be confused by mathematics as well when I was your age” okay that was a lie but he was still going for it. ”Miss Phillips, I want to thank you for your honesty and bravery in bringing it to my attention and the classes attention that Arithmancy confuses you – this is why I have open office hours that all of you are welcome to use.” he smiled over to her. ”Miss Phillips, thank you for your bravery – I would like to award five points to gryffindor for your bravery…as I know from experience expressing anything that may feel like an inadequacy takes the uptmost bravery.” There. It was the nice thing to do right? Promote the kiddos to be more brave and honest in his class? ”Now, back to the matter at hand – this review we have been doing today is because we are heading on break soon and I know how I was as a student. I never wanted to study on my winter break so while we are working up to learning a new aspect of Arithmancy today we are also reviewing some of our previous matter.” There he had explained to his best ability (for now) why they were going over the premise of what Arithmancy was…after all that was the first question he had asked the class back in September. ”Now – Mr. Salander brought up a good point earlier when he brought up what Arithmancy and Math can be used in which brings me to my next question” he paused and scanned the faces of the students again. ”Can any of you tell me what Arithmancy is connected to here at Hogwarts? This can be anything from our extracurricular actitivies, clubs, other classes, and really feel free to give me any answer you feel it fits with. There are no wrong answers.” Sure, there were no wrong ones but there were ones that linked more succinctly to the rest of the lesson. OOC: class will move along in about 12-hours - please feel free to join in if you haven't posted yet
