"It's Cassia......Umm...not the creature of course my name." Hehee. The professor said that they tell their names right? Though it probably wasn't necessary to point that out...eh...not so good first impression. "And this creature breathes fire!" She said scooting backwards a bit. Oh she didn't want to get burned ok. She's been behaving well so she wouldn't have to deal with this with Professor Lafay. You know being set on fire. While Cassia's answer wasn't entirely wrong, Vanora shook her head and gave the cage that held the Fire Crab a little turn. "They don't actually breathe fire."
How many people would laugh if she said fart? Quote:

Daichi let out a whimper as his hands began to shake. He tried to control them but even when he held them together they still continued.
Name one thing he knows about fire crabs...Without raising his hand , he answered... "w-why?" WHY couldn't there be a NORMAL CoMC lesson that did not involved FIRE-creatures? Turning away from Cassia, the smile she was wearing instantly faded when she glanced at.. Daichi? That was his name, right? He may not have introduced himself, but she had heard Kurumi talking to him. Not that she was really listening.. "Why?" her eyebrows raised slightly, "Because that's what we're going to be working with today?" Would he rather dig for worms!? Quote:

Eh, that answer would do. He continued to stare at the creature. He rather enjoyed this class. "Well, I've never heard of a Fire Crab burning off someone's nose." But then again, she didn't know anyone who would want their nose that close to its rear. "But it will try to defend itself." So really, whichever body part was closest would be in danger. SPOILER!!: Harlan and Aspen XD Quote:

But Wizards were weird, so maybe it was something completely different, but with pincers or something. She frowned and thought back to her classes back home... Animal stuff was fun, so Harlan had to have remembered something.
After pouting for a few seconds Harlan raised her hand, it would have to do something with fire, right? 'They've got jewels on their back, right? And... they're protected.. so I guess people want to steal their jewels?' Harlan frowned, wouldn't fire protect them from meanies? 'But.. if it can shoot fire.. why is it protected? It could protect itself right?'
That seemed logical to Harlan.. Quote:

So now did she feel sorry for them? Hmm. Tricky. Maybe they just needed to be trained...? "They probably need rear-mirrors instead of jewels."
PS: Aspen wasn't sharing her name. It'd been a suggestion, not a direction.
That was a very good question!
Vanora shifted herself on the ground more comfortably, and was just about to get into a very long winded speech to answer when another student spoke up. Actually, it was that Ravenclaw who spoke up. Who.. wasn't all that wrong. "They're actually not dumb creatures." And if she was holding the Fire Crab on her lap like she wanted to, she would have covered his ears so he wouldn't have to hear such insults. "Their shells are heavy, so yes, it does slow them down a bit. And while they can defend themselves to some extent, it's not enough. People who hunt Fire Crabs, poachers, they don't exactly travel on their own. And even if they do travel on their own, it's not that difficult to capture," or kill, "a Fire Crab. The shells are hard and impenetrable, but the rest of the creature is not."
And she didn't know what rear-mirrors would do to help, so she didn't even mention them. She gave the Hufflepuff a smile, though. That answered the question? Quote:

Either way, they were scary to him at least. Scary!?
Vanora lifted the cage of the Fire Crab and moved her face closer. How could anyone think that? They were cute! And their shells were shiny. "That's just an opinion." Quote:

Oh right, and she needed to say her name. "And my name is Penelope." "That could go either way, you know. The Fire Crabs may have adapted to the heat and the fire, but no one really knows if they like it." Fire does come out of its rear.
Did the creatures really like that? Hmm. Quote:

Why had she been collecting worms was a mystery for now, of course, but it was not that Rich cared about it much. How bad could an animal shown in a school be anyway? It definitely was not going to be a Basilisk.
He watched motionless, without a word as the creatures were revealed. Fire crabs. The boy snorted loudly. Kicking one of those could be fun. Flying fire crabs would be more fun if they shot fire in the ari. He silently laughed as he stood beside his best friend, Dylan. ''Well...professor...'' he began when he finally decided to say something too ''I can tell that they look prettier and hotter compared to the girls in this school.''
*snicker* Err..
Okay..
Vanora blinked up at the boy, and it may have taken her a moment to think of what to say. That was.. just wrong on so many levels. "There may be something wrong with you if you are comparing the looks and temperature of a Fire Crab to the girls of Hogwarts." She was going to talk to Cece about checking that one out. Quote:

That. And she also knew that they was a such thing as a firecrab stuffed animal. Her brother had one.
Oh. And she should probably say her name. "And I'm Anya Phillips." And she was also obviously very good at... knowing things magical creature stuff... oohing and awwing. She could do that. That answer seemed oddly, oddly familiar. And it only took her a second to realize why. "Right. No one should ride them." And if the girl was thinking it.. "The fire does not make it move faster." AND...he totally spied Ravvie!Odessa out the corner of his eye. It was a little strange thinking about her as West's sister...but meh. She'd get a nod of recognition.
Moving on...
Fire crabs, eh? His uncle had tried to breed Fire Crabs once...Poor guy had lost several fingers and lots of hair in the process, though. While that sounded bad...it had been utterly hilarious.
Anyway, it was because of that that he could offer something. Yay for contributing to the discussion. Probably explained why he was broke, too....Oh, an as an afterthought, "Dylan Montmorency, Slytherin Captain." Quote:

Wait...fire....as in...
Kurumi's violet eyes darted to Daichi and, almost protectively, she reached out and placed a hand on his just to let him know that she was here. Poor Daichi. Maybe Care of Magical Creatures just wasn't the subject for him? At least fire crabs were comparatively small and with a XXX Ministry rating as opposed to a XXXXX rating like dragons? "Daichi, you've delt with dragons, this will be nothing," she whispered, hoping that he could draw on last term a little to, um, comfort himself?
After a few moments, Kurumi eventually raised her hand to answer Professor Newlin's question. "Kurumi Hollingberry," she said, starting with her name. Although the woman already knew it. "You can identify different varieties of fire crabs by the jewels in their tortoise-like shells. Rubies, sapphires, and emeralds are perhaps the most commonly found jewels." Quote:

From the corner of her eye, she noticed her the Slytherin Captain arrive and for a second, she terribly wanted to run off to where he was, an argument to revive her dead nerves would be helpful just about now, but the older Odessa beat her to it. So, she was stuck to the awkward circle.
.....
..Responsively, Professor Newlin had finally detached herself from the dirt and announced the start of class. Thank Merlin.
Fire crabs, is it then? Perhaps those were inside the covered cages?
Ready to respond to the Professor's question, Beezus was about to raise her hand when she heard Daichi ask the Professor why, instead of giving her an answer. OH. Shoot. Daichi was scared of fire, right? Were burns and frantic frightened squeaks to be expected?
As her hand went up, the Ravenclaw said, "Fire crabs are able to defend themselves by shooting flames from its rear end when it is attacked."
Good luck Daichi. Oh, and.. "Beatrice Castell Professor, Ravenclaw." Quote:

He backed up a bit when she took hold of the smoking cage-- because anything covered and smoking that isnt found in the kitchens or the dining table isnt usually a good thing-- and paused for a moment as he beheld the bejeweled creature. Alright what does he know about it? He raises a timid hand and said "The name is Vincenzo Vanderbilt Professor. 7th year Ravenclaw. Anyways, the class was starting. Louisa focused on the cage as the professor pulled the cover away from it. Fire crabs. Not so bad. Her hand shot up in the air, "They are protected species. A reservation has been created to protect this species from Muggles, who would value the jewelled shell, and wizards who use the shells as cauldrons." That sounded more exciting than the flame-throwing butt, to Louisa.
"Louisa Carter. Seventh year Ravenclaw and Head Girl, professor." Although the woman DID greet her by her last name. It doesn't hurt to make sure she wasn't confusing her with someone else... were there any other Carters in Hogwarts? Quote:

She had a feeling that this was not going to be a good lesson.
Then Elliot. She didn't even have words. Was her best friend introducing her to a puffer? The same friend who she thought shared her views about puffers. Her day all of a sudden just got worse. She was going to have to talk to Elliot. Hannah eyed the puffer up and down and didn't say anything. She gave her a raised eyebrow and a nod. She didn't want to get in trouble for talking, but mainly she needed more time to process what was really going on.
The professor broke the conversation she was having with herself and a good thing too. Fire crabs? It was like she couldn't get her brain to function. She had so many things going on in her personal life to process anything else. Think Hannah...what do you know about them? "Adding to what my lovely captain has already said about having to have a license...The Ministry of Magic states that a competent wizard should be able to cope with this animal." So that means that the Hufflepuffs have no business with the animal. "Oh and my name is Hannah Lockwood." Quote:

Everybody else had already shared the basics of a fire crab, sooo...what could she say now? She knew Daichi in her cousin's perspective and quite frankly, he never mentioned anything about a girlfriend or something like that. So it sort of made Juliet giggled on how Daichi completely reacted to it. Hey, some people are not used to saying nor hearing those words.
Juliet didn't react much to it and looked away. A few moments later, the professor started the class.... Fire crabs. What are those exactly? Juliet did read a tiny bit of information about these crabs. She raised her hand to answer "Juliet Kim." she started "Fire crabs is a fancy crab considering all those fine jewels it has" that's pretty much it. It's found rarely, Juliet doesn't even know if she actually has seen one of these creatures.
Right. Her head however snapped back when she saw Kurumi holding Daichi's hand. Her eyes blinked a few more times as she stared back and fort at Kurumi and their hands. Plus they were both discussing about Daichi and fire and the Slytherin is looking a bit worried finding out about this fire crabs stuff. Could it be? Daichi is afraid of the fire? Nooo. Quote:

"Maximus James. Because the shell is so highly prized as others have noted, there are reservations to protect the creature from being hunted and killed to the point of extinction." Blah blah blah. Standard fire crab information. Bo-ring. He was happy to see Em a few rows ahead of him, though - she looked pretty happy to be there. Vivi wasn't much worried about injuries, since the Healer has half decent and she'd never had a lasting wound. Magical fire tended to scar, though... oh well. No harm there. It would be a great story to tell next year in training.
"Genevieve Branxton," she pointed to herself before launching into her 'facts'. "Professor, they're called fire crabs, although they look more like tortoises to me. Sometimes they had to use spells and whatnot, so it could be fun, yes. Actually, if they weren't supposed to work with dragons, it'd be a lot easier to be fun. Because dragons were NO fun. At all.
Fire crabs!! Gooood! They were no dragons! Sophie didn't know much about them, so she listened to some of her classmates as they spoke. She raised her hand before saying pretty much the only thing she knew. "Their shells can be used as cauldrons, professor." Kay, so she also knew the same shells could so very puuurdy because of the jewels that made them all colourful and stuff. Bu... that was kind of obvious to everyone, since they were all looking at a fire crab right there.
What else? "They can set things on fire when scared?" It was more of a question, actually. Because the creature was in that cage and now there was a lot of smoke coming out from it and some of the others as well... and the professor had uncovered the one that was smoking the most, so... But they can still defend themselves by shooting flames out from their backsides, so maybe they don't need claws," she said, shifting to raise the hand that she'd started to reach forward earlier, and kind of starting to ramble a bit near the end. "Oh, and I'm Kendall Lily Quinn," she finally added, giving the professor another grin. She'd seen the worm jar get hidden after all, so maybe there really weren't any gnomes around.
Vanora listened to the rest of the students give their answers, even chuckling at the couple who mentioned the Fire Crab's 'bathroom' habits. Thankfully, the creatures that she had caged had already been fed and even did their stuff beforehand. That would have been quite a mess.
Anyway.. "Right. So, as the rest of you said, Fire Crabs are native to the islands of Fiji. And as you can see." she pointed to the Fire Crab in the cage before slowly opening the door of it, so she could grab him once he made his way out. If he ever made his way out, "Despite its six legs, it has more of a resemblance to that of a turtle. The jeweled shell, which a few of you said could be fitted with either rubies, sapphires or emeralds, is highly valuable for both wizards and muggles. Wizards use the shell as a cauldron because its much harder than any material and won't burn as easily. The muggles use it for the jewels." Both selfish. "There is something that neither a crab or turtle can do, but the Fire Crab can. If the creature feels threatened, or even annoyed," as Theodore said, "they defend themselves by shooting a jet of flame from their.. well, their butts." No laughing, please. "Also, I don't know how," and she didn't want to either, "but Rubeus Hagrid somehow mated a Fire Crab and a Manticore to create the Blast-Ended Skrewts." But enough about them. "And while there is a reserve, which I worked at before coming to Hogwarts, Fire Crab poaching is still happening and the number of creatures decrease each year." Sad, right? "They shouldn't be kept as pets." Even if the Ministry says people could. "But that is just my opinion."
Picking up the Fire Crab once he was out of the cage, Professor Newlin held it gently in her arms as she stood from the ground. She pulled out her wand, flicking it in the direction of the rest of the cages and the table by the shed, causing all the covers to come off. She may have forgotten about the jar of worms.. "As you can see, there are enough Fire Crabs for each of you." She glanced over at Daichi, if that was his name, and Kai, giving them both a small smile. "But if you'd rather work in pairs, that is fine." "If there aren't any questions, I'd like you all to grab a bucket, a brush and a washcloth from off the table, then stand by one of the cages. Don't let the Fire Crabs out just yet. We'll have to get the water ready first."
Yup. They were going to be cleaning a Fire Crab. OOC: Okay! If your character doesn't have any question, have them go over and pick up their supplies then pick out a Fire Crab to stand by! This does not have to be done in one post, you can RP finding a partner if you'd like. Or just talking, whatever. We'll start the activity in about.. 36 hours. So you all have time to post. =D Partners should have two Fire Crabs.
