As you make your way down to the pasture for the first Care of Magical Creatures lesson of the term, and if this is not your first time visiting the place, you'll notice that the grassy area looks.. well, different. No creatures, besides the ones that Professor Newlin has hidden in the many cages scattered about can be seen.. or not seen, and how could you possibly miss the long covered table off to the side near the shed? What is in the cages and under the cover will stay a mystery.. for now.
Have yourself a seat on the grass, or stand if you'd rather! Not too close to those cages, though. Professor Newlin is there, laying on her stomach in the middle of the area, an open jar next to her and her finger stuck deep in the dirt.
There are worms in the dirt, after all.
OOC:This lesson will start later, later, laaaaater today. And I'm so nervous! The lesson has started! Please don't announce late arrivals. And I'm still nervous!
Ethan had been quite distracted since the beginning of the class, mostly due to the professor digging in the jar of dirt and playing with worms. It reminded him of Herbology and how worms are good for gardens and that sort of thing. He had spent the first few minutes forgetting where he was and hoping they'd actually do some gardening. But once she had put the jar away, dawning realization came over the boy as the professor revealed the cages.
Oh, riiiiight.... Care of Magical Creatures...
The fifth year stared at the creatures in the cages, trying to remember what he knew about fire crabs. After listening to the answers his fellow classmates gave, the Ravenclaw raised his hand. "Ethan McCarthy, Miss... Fire crabs are a protected species of magical creature. There's even a reservation for them so their jewels aren't stolen or their shells used for cauldrons." Poor things. They weren't particularly cute, but Ethan felt bad that someone might hurt one just to get to its shell.

The professor broke the conversation she was having with herself and a good thing too. Fire crabs? It was like she couldn't get her brain to function. She had so many things going on in her personal life to process anything else. Think Hannah...what do you know about them? "Adding to what my lovely captain has already said about having to have a license...The Ministry of Magic states that a competent wizard should be able to cope with this animal." So that means that the Hufflepuffs have no business with the animal. "Oh and my name is Hannah Lockwood."
....hahaha. Aspen snorted and used her hand to try and hide her grin. SOMEONE, Dylan, had an admirer.

Aspen was thinking along the same lines as this Hufflepuff. She shrugged, not feeling like raising her hand or drawing attention.
"Basically, I think they must be really slow AND dumb. If muggles AND wizards are catching creatures that shoot fire for defense... then they're inept and have terrible aim." So now did she feel sorry for them? Hmm. Tricky. Maybe they just needed to be trained...? "They probably need rear-mirrors instead of jewels."
PS: Aspen wasn't sharing her name. It'd been a suggestion, not a direction.
Wow. Kai gasped. These were some pretty cool crabs... But even so, he really knew nothing about them at all, nor had he ever seen one before.
"Fire crabs are...scary." Kai smiled, "And my name is Kai Daniels". Had everyone really forgotten that detail? Or maybe he was the only one frightened of them. Either way, they were scary to him at least.

Frankly Hannah was getting tired of seeing Soapys glares/dirty looks, and well just seeing her in general. Then the thought of her lost bet came into her mind and her mood went instantly sour. Plus she was not in the mood to get dirty...not that she ever was, but still. She had a feeling that this was not going to be a good lesson.
Then Elliot. She didn't even have words. Was her best friend introducing her to a puffer? The same friend who she thought shared her views about puffers. Her day all of a sudden just got worse. She was going to have to talk to Elliot. Hannah eyed the puffer up and down and didn't say anything. She gave her a raised eyebrow and a nod. She didn't want to get in trouble for talking, but mainly she needed more time to process what was really going on.

Elliot could totally tell this was NOT going to her cup of tea. She didn't know anything about ANY magical creatures. She shot a HEEELP look at Hannah...Elliot was frightened a great deal when she felt ignorant.
She WANTED to say..'Well, professor whatever your name is, if I knew anything about them, I wouldn't BE here, would I?' but she refrained from doing so. no need to scare a new teacher.

Fire Crabs? Those sounded pretty cool. Looked pretty cool too. But what did she know about them? Um...Penelope couldn't think of much. So she listened to what everyone else said for a little bit before deciding to just guess at something. "They probably like heat or fire or something, right?" she asked/answered as she raised her hand. Seemed like a good guess. Why would they be called fire crabs if they didn't like fire? Oh right, and she needed to say her name. "And my name is Penelope."

Alex was usually more attentive than this during care of magical creatures, since it WAS his favorite subject, but he hadn't had coffee this morning and was struggling to keep his eyelids open. Who knew that a caffeine addiction would make you MORE sleepy if you DIDN'T have it?? Yawning, he raised his hand and hoped that what he was about to answer with wasn't already said--he'd honestly have no idea.
"Alex Greingoth, Professor," he said with a smile. "And fire crabs are a protected creature so people don't go around poaching them for their jewels," he said. Poor fire crabs, it wasn't their fault they had jewels on their back!

Ella watched as Professor Newlin started class, bouncing the tiniest bit because she was quite excited. The third year's eyes grew wide as the professor suddenly uncovered the cage that was smoking, revealing...was that a firecrab. ...Yup.
What did Ella Bishop know about fire crabs? Oh you mean besides the fact that they shot fire out of their butts? just like those darn skrewts >.< The badger raised her hand, eyeing the thing warily. "Hi Professor, Ella Bishop here..." Which she already knew, yeah? They were practically old friends now. "I believe fire crabs are natives of Fiji and they um...they...well they shoot fire out of their erm...behinds." Crazy fire farters!
"All right." she cleared her throat to get everyone's attention as she wiped her hands off on her jeans. "I think everyone who wants to be here is here, and if they're not.." Then they were just going to be late, that was all. "As some of you already know, I am Professor Newlin and as everyone should know, this is Care of Magical Creatures." There was some emphasis on the 'Care' part; they would see why when the hands on lesson starts. The best part, in her opinion.
And just because she really did want to get to the best part, she pulled the cage that was smoking the most closer to herself and tugged the covering from off of it.
She waited for the imaginary 'ohhs' and 'ahhs' of the students to die down before.. "Who can tell me what they know about Fire Crabs? One thing per person, and," if it wasn't too much trouble, "it would be nice if you told me your names as well."
OOC: The lesson has officially started! Don't worry about mentioning the same thing as another person, you will still get credit for it. But creativity is awesome, just so you know. =D
Belle stood in awe at the fire crabs. She actually knew what they looked like in the textbook but not in real life. They actually looked repulsive. Belle gave the fire crabs a pertrifying look. What did Belle know about fire crabs, well she could only guess. "Professor, you can call me Belle Lecium, i think fire crabs are dangerous when you get too close. They also have aggressive personalities."

Fire crabs, she said. It could've been worse, after all. At least they weren't studying worms. That was a relief. Not to mention Ari actually knew something about these creatures.
'They are classified as XXX creatures by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures in the Ministry of Magic. Meaning they're not inoffensive but not really dangerous either if you're a competent witch or wizard.' At least she hoped they weren't. Oh, right! They were supposed to say their names as well. 'Ariadne Marchbanks, that's me.'
Fire crabs? Okay. Hand UP, small smile on. The stereotypical nerd posture and expression. What was so wrong with that, though? Right? Max knew it was important to get on this particular professor's good side, as it was one of his two favorite classes. It was weird that he had never truly had any kind of relationship with Williamson, but... it was Max's last term, so it was crucial that he made the most out of the time he had in class this year. He and Louisa were supposed to be making the best out of it, right?
"Maximus James. Because the shell is so highly prized as others have noted, there are reservations to protect the creature from being hunted and killed to the point of extinction." Blah blah blah. Standard fire crab information. Bo-ring. He was happy to see Em a few rows ahead of him, though - she looked pretty happy to be there. Of COURSE she would be enthused, considering her experiences last year. So... maybe the topic of fire crabs wasn't actually so boring?

Helen has mixed emotions about CoMC as she is more of a textbook kind of girl then a Herbology, creature kind of girl but this year was important so she vowed to try her best.
She raised her hand and said " The name's Helen, Miss.. I dont know much about fire crabs but the fact that they're native to Fiji. "
After saying that she turned to her side to see who was near to her and she saw it was Ethan, a fellow fifth year ravviee. " Hey " she said before turning back to the professor.

Gideon had to admit he had been curious to just what the professor had been doing on the ground, but the prefect figured they might just find that out by whatever they were to be learning about in class. Soon enough class was begun and the woman mentioned fire crabs, asking what anyone might knew about them. Having some knowledge of the creature at least in passing, he raised his hand. "Gideon Gert," he introduced providing his name first and formost. "They are a six-legged crab that resembles a turtle, protected because its shell is highly valued by both muggle and wizard alike." Jeweled...strong...yep it had purposes outside protecting the actual owner of the shell.
"They supposedly were one of the types of creatures Gilderoy Lockhart dealt with in his escapades," he added for interest. Not that he had read any of the man's books...nope more like caught the mention in another text. Fire crabs did pose some interest to the potion-making Gryffindor.

Richard had been eyeing that woman ever since he had laid his gray eyes on her for the first time. She both hilarious and interesting at the first time which was an odd mixture for him. One could not see a female playing with worms everyday though so maybe she would stay at the interesting side a bit more. Why had she been collecting worms was a mystery for now, of course, but it was not that Rich cared about it much. How bad could an animal shown in a school be anyway? It definitely was not going to be a Basilisk.
He watched motionless, without a word as the creatures were revealed. Fire crabs. The boy snorted loudly. Kicking one of those could be fun. Flying fire crabs would be more fun if they shot fire in the ari. He silently laughed as he stood beside his best friend, Dylan. ''Well...professor...'' he began when he finally decided to say something too ''I can tell that they look prettier and hotter compared to the girls in this school.''

Now this was a cool creature. Not some lame-o flobberworm type thing either, but an honest to goodness fire breather. Or no... not breather, since the fire was coming out of its bum, but a fire... thingy.
Genuine fire thingy.
Could they get close enough to actually handle the creature, or was the professor worried they might break get injured? Vivi wasn't much worried about injuries, since the Healer has half decent and she'd never had a lasting wound. Magical fire tended to scar, though... oh well. No harm there. It would be a great story to tell next year in training.
"Genevieve Branxton," she pointed to herself before launching into her 'facts'. "Professor, they're called fire crabs, although they look more like tortoises to me. And I suspect that the types of jewels actually indicate different species of fire crabs and might be able to tell us more about where they come from, since animals tend to evolve distinctly in different places. And ALSO... I doubt feeding them is as dangerous as clean up their poo." Truth.

Thank Merlin she was in a class she didn't have to think about to much like Arthimancy. That class would put her in a come right about now. so CoMC was just the welcomed lesson she craved.
Harlow's hand was up before she had really heard this question. Well she knew something about fire crabs. "Um some of their shells variations are fitted with rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. That's why a habitat had to be created for their protection from muggles." she said softly. "I'm Harlow Riddle professor." she added.

Tears pooled in Harlow's eyes and her hands flew to her fly away hair. She knew her mind had been on things other than her appearance lately but it was still mean to point that out in front of everyone in the middle of class.

Ooohh!! Fire crabs! They were pretty cool looking. And they had jewels in their shells! The were used to make jewelry, right? Cardigan rethought that. If you took the jewels out of them, it would be like....ANIMAL ABUSE! It was sad that some animals had to go through it each day.
Poor them.

Fire crabs. Well, Tag was gonna say what Ella said and literally in the same way, but when she got to answering it before he did, he frowned. He had to think of something else. An he most especially did not want to copy off any of his friends.
"Well, people can have them, but you have to be able to take care of them. Like any other pet basically, but the ministry requires you have some license." Yeah that was fine, right? Better than saying fire erupted out of their butts. Oh no bad thought bad thought! Tag's serious face began to shape oddly as his lips were pressed tight together "My..my..my..my name's Tag Kildare..the leprechaun.." Tag could barely announce with a straight face.
As he covered his mouth to try and cover his giggling he exploded and burst out into laughter while saying in giggling fits, "I guess it was hurting while using the bathroom! Ahahahaha!"
Sophie smiled goofily at Ella after having sortofbutnotreally teased her about her boooyyfriiiend. She also smiled at Nigel when the boy decided to lie down on the ground just like the professor. Hah! These people were so cool!
But now class was starting! It wasn't like that was a Charms class or anything, but Care of Magical Creatures could be kind of fun. Sometimes they had to use spells and whatnot, so it could be fun, yes. Actually, if they weren't supposed to work with dragons, it'd be a lot easier to be fun. Because dragons were NO fun. At all.
Fire crabs!! Gooood! They were no dragons! Sophie didn't know much about them, so she listened to some of her classmates as they spoke. She raised her hand before saying pretty much the only thing she knew. "Their shells can be used as cauldrons, professor." Kay, so she also knew the same shells could so very puuurdy because of the jewels that made them all colourful and stuff. Bu... that was kind of obvious to everyone, since they were all looking at a fire crab right there.
What else? "They can set things on fire when scared?" It was more of a question, actually. Because the creature was in that cage and now there was a lot of smoke coming out from it and some of the others as well... and the professor had uncovered the one that was smoking the most, so... Merlin! Thankfully everyone there knew the Aguamenti spell, because... it might not end that well.... maybe.... hopefully nothing would happen, though.
Unless this teacher was as crazy as professor Williamson! o_o

Nerida turned her attention toward the professor, as she called the class so they could start. Ahh, fire crabs. She ran into one, that her great grandfather owned. Ahh...There were bad memories that day.
Okay, so what did she know about the fire crab? First off, her name since that was now essential to tell the new Care of Magical Creatures professor. She raised her hand."Hello, I am Nerida Eventide!"

Jory raised his hand. "Fire crab species can be identified by gems on their backs like rubies,'' he said after some thought and listening to other responses.
"I'm Jory Stonewall,'' he added to Professor Newlin.
Richard had been eyeing that woman ever since he had laid his gray eyes on her for the first time. She both hilarious and interesting at the first time which was an odd mixture for him. One could not see a female playing with worms everyday though so maybe she would stay at the interesting side a bit more. Why had she been collecting worms was a mystery for now, of course, but it was not that Rich cared about it much. How bad could an animal shown in a school be anyway? It definitely was not going to be a Basilisk.
He watched motionless, without a word as the creatures were revealed. Fire crabs. The boy snorted loudly. Kicking one of those could be fun. Flying fire crabs would be more fun if they shot fire in the ari. He silently laughed as he stood beside his best friend, Dylan. ''Well...professor...'' he began when he finally decided to say something too ''I can tell that they look prettier and hotter compared to the girls in this school.''

Plus Rich made a comment that the girls in the school were UGLY and that fire crab looked better and she was offended "Really!?" ugh boys were soo dumb
