| | |  Battlements
 High above overlooking the lake and a section of the grounds are the castle battlements. During the Battle of Hogwarts, the battlements where used to defend the school from Lord Voldemort and his allies. This is also where Sirius Black rode away on Buckbeak the hippogriff, but keep that hush hush. Though some damage remains, the battlements remain fairly intact and provide an opportune place to be when an enemy is approaching.
Though there hasn't been a full-blown battle at Hogwarts for many years, the battlements nonetheless provide a nice view from a high vantage point. More often than not, the Giant Squid can be seen bathing himself in the sunlight; thestrals (if you can see them) fly above the trees at the edge of the lake; and if you look closely you'll be able to follow the road that leads to the Entrance Gates. If you're feeling up to climbing the tight spiral staircase to get there, know that it is worth the effort. There are wooden crates and barrels for you to sit on at the top should you need to catch your breath.

The castle was a miserable sort of place MOST of the time, and Phoebe just wanted to be away from the fear of running into a hooded jerk or the cruel Headimposter or someone looking gloomy. It was a beautiful day, and it felt like no one could really enjoy it.
Phoebe huddled on a crate and pulled her cloak tightly around her body. Maybe Bernie would randomly show up here (not like she left a note) and they could huddle in the bright sunshine and nippy chill together.

"Fancy meeting you up here," Bernie murmured, popping up a little while after Phoebe. She was squinting at the moment, not because of the light (she had her cat-eye sunglasses on) but because they were up kinda high here, that staircase was a doozy, wheeeew, and she was trying to trick herself into ignoring all that.
She settled into a crate next to Phoebe and pulled out two bottles of pumpkin juice from an inner pocket in her cloak. "Care for a libation, m'lady?" You know, because they were up on the battlements. It called for the old-timey talk. And Phoebe... looked like she needed a small dose of silliness.

"It's a beautiful day," Phoebe offered helpfully, accepting the bottle and cracking the cap off against the wall. Libations was a Ravenclaw word for drinky drinks, right? "I mean... my thanks, doll face."
She took a sip, the cold going straight to her throat. Good stuff. "We're so high up. Doesn't seem like anyone in the world even exists, except those liiiiiiiittle bitty ant humans by the lake. Would be a good place for telling secrets and making plans, don't you think?"

Bernie copied her friend, who honestly made cracking open a pumpkin juice look like the coolest, smoothest thing in the WORLD.
"You're welcome, darlin'." Or whatever medieval blokes said. Bernie hid a goofy smile behind a sip from her bottle. MMmmmmmm.
Yeah, they were pretty high; did Phoebe have to keep bringing it up? Bernie dug into a different pocket of her coat as the other Gryffindor talked. "It would be, if we had AnYtHiNG to talk about besides boys, you know." She gave an extra loud, silly laugh and found her notebook in her hand at last.
Bernie silently flipped past all the crappy drawings of herself in various hats, and flipped to a blank page. She had a pencil in that pocket too, and as she quickly wrote on the pad, she casually narrated, "Do you see Barty out there in the lake? I heard your sister has been looking for him."
The notebook said, though:

Bernie was SUCH a SPY. Look at this, Pheebs. LOOK. LOOK AT HER. She tapped the pencil on the paper and then offered it to Phoebe so she could WRITE BACK.

"As it happens, I do like to talk about boys. I feel like we should probably start a Gryffindor ranking system of all the boys from seventh year to fourth year. Maybe make it overly complicated and elaborate in a way that only we can understand. Those are the best kind of systems," Phoebe sipped her pumpkin juice and gave Bernie's notebook barely a flicker of her fluttery eyelashes, but she saw it. She definitely saw it.
"All little spend time looking for Mr. Henry," Phoebe set down her bottle and took the little pencil. "I'm not worried about it. I'd worry if she started going into the water or threw things at the poor guy." She leaned in to write in the notebook.

"Oooooh, I like this idea. I fully approve," Bernie mused, sipping at her pumpkin juice again. "Something involving both stars and butterflies, scores out of 100, maybe with quotes from them and little illustrations of their noses. But why limit ourselves to just the boys in Gryffindor?" Please, they were interesting boys in all the Houses, like the aloof ones in Slytherin.
Not that she'd said that. Not at all. Hadn't even thought it, really.
She watched Phoebe jot something down and subtly shook her head. "Right, but she's Kinsay James. She probably WOULD throw things at him. You know she hates me, right? She'd definitely throw things at me, if I were that squid." Bernie just had to find a way to work their animosity in, and had decided to just bluntly state it as fact.
She quickly scratched out what Phoebe had written.
Quote: Patronus? WHAT? Too advanced for me still.
PORTRAITS, that's what!
She nonchalantly leaned back a little, swishing her hair back and forth in the breeze. This WAS a nice spot if you didn't think too much about it.

"It's a tracking system for Gryffindors, but we can put anyone we want into it. Hufflepuffs, even. What do you suppose the butterflies mean? That's some advanced stuff," Phoebe tucked her hair behind her ear and leaned in to peer at Bernie's writing. Portraits. PORTRAITS. Why had they left up the portraits if they were a possible way to communicate with the outside world?

"I wish you'd stop fighting with my sister. She's a baby. Why are you fighting with a baby? And she would NOT throw something at a squid." It was terribly distracting to talk about the baby when they were plotting rebellion.

"Okay, yes, even the Hufflepuffs," Bernie readily agreed, already mentally giving Minjae a score of about seven (out of one hundred, yes), just because he blew up things like the jukebox and had loads of money but didn't seem like the type who'd share it. "The butterflies mean... they give you butterflies!" DUH! That was easyily improvised.
She waited for Phoebe to write back and nodded, a small, tiny nod.

C'mon, Phoebe, be on Bernie's side. "Now we all know it was because YOU-KNOW-WHO was in charge... but anyway, can't you broker a peace treaty with her? For me? Pweeeeeeeez?"
Bernie leaned into her friend and turned her shiny, big blue eyes on her. Nudge nudge. Pweeeeeeeez, make Kinsay stop being st00pid.

"The butterflies mean they give you butterflies!" That was the smartest and best way to gauge the boys. Absolutely. Phoebe laughed and took another sip from her bottle. She was mentally calculating all the portraits in the castle, trying to decide who might have another portrait elsewhere in the world.
Not thinking about boys so much.

Bernie knew she was smart. About boys? Not really. Smart about other things? Sure. Did she always show it? Seldom.
She wasn't laughing as much either. She was actually wondering what it would take to convince one of these portraits to visit its other home... and then report back to them...

Bernie didn't know any Pink Lady. She eyed her friend, taking a sip of her drink too. "You know I've tried that, right? She doesn't like to let things go." The kid was still hung up on the first week of school events of LAST school year. But, if Phoebe said she would talk to Kinsay, Bernie believed her, so she nodded and let this thing go. For now.

Of all the places in the castle, this was one of Tavie's favorites. From here she could watch the giant squid playing in the lake, students flying across the quidditch pitch or playing on the grounds. She could even see the forest from here and daydream about the paths she would wander through on her daily adventures. It was beautiful.
At least... it used to be beautiful.
An endless sea of clouds covered the sky, threatening rain at any moment. There were no kids out playing on the grounds or flying over the quidditch pitch. Barnabas wasn't out sunbathing.
It was only silence. For now that would be enough.
The sixteen year old sat on one of the barrels, overlooking the entrance and imagining herself on the other side of it.

Though their brother and sister no longer resided in Ravenclaw tower, Nem still had plenty of reason to visit the upper floors of the castle. Places to go. People to see. Grounds to watch. Thoughts to entertain.
By this point in the year, they had stopped taking staircases at a run, and instead climbed them two, sometimes three steps at a time at a steadier pace. Nem emerged out on the battlements into the spring air - overcast, sure, but spring nonetheless - at once noting that someone else was already here. By all appearances, they had always got along fine with her, but many of Stark's friends had been locked away, one taken further still, and there was a good chance she was taking it to heart. Nem, tired of the doom and gloom permeating every lesson, had started making an effort to avoid most other students during their free time, at least those they expected would provide more of the same. Fortunately, most wanted nothing to do with them in any case.
Sparing Stark just a glance, Nem made for a spot further along the battlements, where they'd get a decent view of a wide expanse of the grounds.
