Default Into the Mist: Hogwarts Grounds

The temperature drops as you approach the front gates of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. The castle that can usually be seen off in the distance is entirely obscured by the thick mist that has settled. Just a glance makes it difficult to see where the mist ends and the sky begins. It is as if the entire castle is engulfed.

An eerie silence hangs about. No birds fly overhead and there are no creatures big or small scurrying in the vicinity. The occasional rustle of unseen leaves are all that occasionally step in to break the silence.

There is an ominous feel as you get closer, a dread you cannot explain but it weighs heavy on you the closer you get. Just nerves? A justifiable fear?

The mist almost seems to watch you as you approach. As if it is its own living being and the feeling is enough to send chills up your spine. What lies ahead?

Uggggggggggggh!

Why was he here again? Why?! What was the freaking point? He wasn't a spellcaster, he didn't care about whatever this was, and he wasn't up for duelling some random mystical entity that left people running. He actually liked being alive, thank you very much. Let him go back to his potions lab, that's all he was asking for. He'd much rather be listening to Meriwether talking about some boring nonsense that bore into his skull than have to be here.

Whatever. Grayson Whitlock was here. Was Eliora seeing this? Could he get a promotion now?

After his Department Head's insistence that he be here, Grayson had packed for the occasion before making his way towards the castle. There were a bunch of vials and potions bottles sitting in his small pocket bag, ready for some sample taking. He still didn't understand why this was necessary, but apparently Eliora wanted samples for him to examine further afterwards. Not to mention that the woman was a little scary when she was staring him down like she did.

All thoughts about that left his brain as he neared the castle and the crowd that was gathering there. It was weird seeing the castle like this. It almost gave him a pang in his chest, something he would be more than happy to deny should anyone ask. It was a shame, really, the man really wanted Flynn to come here but this, whatever this freaking thing was, had stopped these plans. Maybe he could tell Flynn about this. Look like a hero in the process. You know, if he made it out ALIVE and all that jazz.

While Grayson didn't really care for anyone else who was here, he was glad that Lex was here. She was cool, always had been, and seemed to have a plan for how to tackle this. It was probably why he actually listened to her and took out his wand. Caution, you know? He wasn't dying here. Looking past her, his eyes landed on the mist properly, and he outwardly shuddered. It looked creepy, didn't it? And left all kinds of doubts in his mind about this entire operation.

Could he go home? He was too pretty for this.

Ever since the first reports of the mist had filtered in, mostly from the media, Bryony had been extra on edge. Even more so once she’d lost contact with her sister, but she wasn’t about to perform unprofessionally. Most of her worries were just released outside of work, either to Braedon or her siblings via owl messages mostly. At work she was in Auror mode, always vigilant, but even so she’d felt like Alexa had had every right to say she shouldn’t come if she thought it would be difficult. It wasn’t only Kamryn missing though. She fully understood that, and she fully understood the mission.

Her wand was already at the ready as soon as she had Apparated into Hogsmeade and walked briskly up the path to the gates that she remembered fondly from way back when she had been a student at Hogwarts, stopping near her department head and the other MLE contingent. The students didn’t deserve to be prevented from their education here; they didn’t deserve having to be on top of the French students at Beauxbatons either, metaphorically. Nobody deserved any of this, and if they could find out the reason behind it, all the better.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Ursula had immediately signed up for this mission. She had felt a loyalty to help her former school and so she was now standing with her wand at the ready. Her eyes were meticulously scanning the sight that befell her and she'd be lying if she said that she didn't feel slightly, well, apprehensive. Considering what she had heard, her feelings weren't surprising.

Ursula saw that from her department there was only her and Grayson. Did Eliora's "recruitment drive" fail? She certainly hoped not but there was a bit of time for others to arrive.

The ongoing investigation of Hogwarts had intrigued Evangeline initially. She had other assignments and operations she had been working on, but when the opportunity came to investigate again, this time with a new, stronger tactic and more hand, she volunteered. Aside from wanting to defend the castle where she had grown up and learned who she was, she was... curious. Was the big bad mist as scary as everyone was making it out to be? DERP was pretty shaken up when they returned from their adventure... but they were plant people. Not aurors. So she was curious.

After arriving, Evangeline came into place beside Benzi, her wand firmly in her hand, her eyes on the gates. She worked well with Benzi and she knew she could count on him to have her back, as she'd have his. She worked better with Angelo, of course, but Benzi was still reliable. Besides... if something went sideways, Angelo had a legacy to continue.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Matt had mixed emotions about this whole situation. On the one hand, it was field work - FINALLY! - and that was really exciting because Matt here was an adrenaline junkie and field work like this was the sole reason he had decided to become an Auror in the first place. On the other hand, his sister still attended this school and he had seen the drastic change in her because of all that had happened regarding this mysterious mist. Whatever was happening was not good. Not at all.

Plus, the reports from those who had been there before weren't very optimistic either.

The general feeling inside his chest was a positive one, however. Matt was ready for this. He had been training loads - and he meant LOADS - for the past few years to be worthy of being called an Auror, and he felt like this kind of thing was his duty. Quite literally.

Wand at the ready, he remained close to the group, but not amongst them. He knew better by now than to go on a rampage and do things in an impulse, but he was also not there to hide away. They were there to sort this out for good and he would do his best to accomplish that.

The reports Derek had read and heard weren't good and, to be honest, he wasn't completely sure what to prepare for, and because of that he prepared for... everything. Perhaps he had over-prepared, but was that ever really a thing? Derek didn't think so.

In the small charmed rucksack on his back, the PART Supervisor was carrying all sorts of concoctions. From corrosive acids to healing draughts, Derek had as much as he could possibly carry, which was a lot thanks to magic.

He noticed the mist was much farther back than his colleagues had described it in their report. Nonetheless, it didn't spark any optimism in him, as his first thoughts were that it had simply gone further into the Castle. Thank Merlin everyone had been evacuated.

Everyone except two students, it seemed. Derek wondered what would happen if they found their bodies. Was it terrible he was thinking like that? Perhaps it was. Honestly, it had been long enough, Derek sadly did not have high hopes for those kids.

The Potioneer kept quiet, as was his normal, and got his wand at the ready. He stayed towards the rear of the group, waiting to see what the others decided to do.

PHILOMATH ❅ not one atom, but two ♪ ♪ made of starstuff ❅ def main():

Bambi had exactly zero (0) valid reasons to be here. 1) She would be entirely useless, because the only thing she'd wanted to do ever since they'd arrived is turn right back around and leave. 2) She would be entirely useless, because her fields of expertise were Transfiguration and Charms, but not defensive charms. It was highly likely the blonde would try and shrink an unknown terror instead of attacking it head on. And, 3) She would be entirely useless, because she felt like she was about to die.

She'd escaped death at the hands of Hogwarts a long, long time ago. Her presence here was really only because she wanted to prove something to Eliora, but she was about to be the group's biggest liability if she didn't get out of her own head, and fast. Tightening her already vice like grip on her wand, the freckled blonde swallowed and did her very best not to think about the two bodies they might find. That was the worst part about this, and she wasn't sure she'd be able to handle it. Like, at all.

__________

Had Benzi known of the thoughts that had gone through Amrita's head, he would have pulled her aside for a stern word about proportions. They've been through worse. She's been through worse, and come out victorious. They've handled humans, creatures, organisations that made this mist, whatever it may be, look like child's play. He was sure of it.

The alternative made him sick to his stomach, and he wouldn't entertain that possibility.

Lex's words came from the front, and Benzi looked around to find their people, noting with some relief that they had strength in numbers. Motioning to Amrita that they'd meet ahead when they all started the ascent to the school, he noticed one Evangeline settle beside him. Not only strength in numbers, but strength in talent and experience too. All his favourite MLE'ers were here today.

A thought occurred to the auror as he neared Alexa and the gates, preferring to be in the front for the beginning of this. Was it possible that the mist had receded because of the lack of human presence? Reports had said it had come in from the grounds, with the caslte being its apparent focal point. Hmm. He tucked away this information, and waited to be given the go ahead to step back into Hogwarts.

Eliora had always been on one of the portkeys leaving a few minutes after everyone else. Just to make sure everyone was accounted for and no resources were left behind. And three minutes had been the perfect time for her to chug another coffee and brief Rusty and Giulia on holding the fort until they were back. When they were back. They both knew what the situation was and Giulia was officially the first contact for the nanny. Sure, Briar didn't think that she needed a nanny, but Eliora didn't trust her daughter as far as she could throw her. She was too much like her father... Rusty, however, was going to hold the fort down in the office and keep everyone that wasn't joining this mission in line.

Good old best friend..

She completed another head count when she arrived, aware of the names of every member of staff that was there from all three departments. Eliora was meticulous with details. She made sure to catch eye contact with both Alexa and James to let them know they were ready. Or.. as ready as one could be with kids at home as a single parent.

--

Theophilus sensed nerves across the board. Some would say that he could sniff out nerves from his colleagues and they would be right. As his portkey arrived, he looked around at those gathered there and figured a couple would be a flight risk so he would be keeping a tight eye on them. He found himself over near his department head and gave him a nod to say that he had everything he needed. If they needed it.

Theophilus Darcy did not attend anything without his trusty toolbelt that he had put together during his time at university and adapted as the years went on. It had everything he could possibly need in any situation.

Ready steady.

The little excursion group was coming together well. Lex nodded along to James's words, obviously agreeing. The team was made up of three different departments for a reason. Each had their own tasks and each played an integral role to them pulling this off.

Once Eliora arrived, she took that as the signal for them to get moving and not a moment too soon. Lex wasn't the sort to stand around when the next big thing was just beyond the horizon--and quite literally in this case.

"That's everyone. If you haven't already, wands out now." Speaking mostly to the other departments as she had no doubt that by now her own had theirs at the ready as she'd instructed, or they'd better anyway. Alexa moved forward, making her way onto the grounds with a nod for her set to come along. It made sense they stayed in the front line for now. As far as she could see, the mist was ahead and not likely to creep up behind them. Whatever it was, there was something keeping that stuff contained...and at the moment...somewhere else. This formation worked.

Once they got closer, they would switch to another that surrounded the group as best they could. It was all in the earlier briefing. Along with the words against recklessness.

"DERP rule out dark magic and creatures yet?" She asked. The report had indicated it wasn't environmental, but what else had they decided it wasn't? Did anyone know?

No, nothing too reckless indeed. Jake liked to think he had left that particular trait behind him... or at least didn't let it appear when he was working. For the most part. One could argue that it was sometimes a benefit to have a certain degree of recklessness when working out in the field as Magical Law Enforcement, but too much and you'd find yourself in trouble.

He nodded in response to Alexa's initial instructions to show he had heard and was taking her words into account, though Jake liked to believe he'd have done all of that anyway. He definitely had the wand part covered.

More and more people arrived, but Jake stood still and quiet, intently observing the mist in the middle distance and wondering if maybe it was now particularly concentrated in one specific area for whatever reason. He supposed he could have greeted the arrivals he knew instead, but even Jake could see that this was not the time for socialising.

Soon it was time, and he followed Alexa onto the grounds to begin approaching the mist. He tried to bear in mind what he'd said to Becca earlier, that whole thing about promising not to die today and leaving her a widow, and a mother of nine to boot.

He cast a sideways glance towards his boss at her question. It wasn't one he had much (read: any) intel on. "Haven't the-..." Foggiest. Jake silently thanked his brain for engaging and his mouth for slamming shut before that one slipped out. It wouldn't have been an intentional joke, if he had voiced it, but stuff like that upset folk whether it was intentional or not. He quickly backtracked and tried again. "I'm not sure..." Jake looked around at the others to see if any of them were more in the know than he was, the heads of the other two departments in particular.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

As Alexa and her department began to journey forward onto the Hogwarts grounds, Ursula began to slowly move with her department co-workers, keeping a slight distance and constant vigilance. She was thankful that she had been practising her defensive spellwork but she knew that she was going to have her work cut out for her.

When she heard Lex ask about DERP's findings, she replied with, "I'm unaware of the findings from the DERP."

follow me; everything is all right.

No. It had not, dear department head.

Though all magic leaves traces and none of that nature had been discovered either. Or not yet, perhaps. Good thing that the right departments to check for these very traces were on the grounds today. However, one would find no traces of Dark magic or Dark creatures at this time.

The crunch of the grass beneath your feet is the only disturbance these grounds have seen for quite some time now; the rest of the vegetation otherwise remains the same though wilted and starved for sunlight as little swirls of of grey vapor kiss the air.

However, as you approach the castle further there is an appearance of two familiar shapes curled up on the ground several yards apart from one another. What is perhaps most peculiar is that some of the Hogwarts vegetation has grown over the forms, almost like earthy blankets trying to protect what lay beneath them. Trying to do it's part. Should one get close enough to either mound, one would easily see a slender hand belonging to a young witch peeking out from one and a mop of dusty blonde hair from the other.

You have found them. Now they can finally be brought home.

"As far as I could tell from their report, they only covered the environmental stuff-air quality, whether the mist was toxic, etc." Which, way to do the bare minimum. They could've done with the other information, but as it was, they were pretty much going in blind.

Ronan allowed himself a small smile at Jake's near Freudian slip. But not too big of one, he didn't anyone to think he wasn't taking this seriously. He was taking this very[ seriously.

Unfortunately, the silencing charms he usually kept on his shoes were ineffective against the crunch of the dead grass beneath his feet. Luckily, the various tracking and sensing spells he'd been silently casting as the group crossed the grounds had returned nothing, not even on the mounds of grass they were now coming upon. He carefully peeked into the closest, the Gryffindor curiosity in him something that he hadn't quite learned to control yet. It seemed as if the grounds of Hogwarts itself had literally risen up to protect the students where the staff had failed to. Something that gave him both the warm-fuzzies and a chill in equal measure.

"Found one of the lost students," he spoke up quietly so as to not alert anything malicious to their presence as he was bending to pick the poor girl up. Kamryn, he believed her name was....?

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Megan found herself sticking close to one of her coworkers who was a lot like her- Ursula. She did note that the others from her department were nearby too, including her department head. Her wand was still at the ready and her eyes found the DERP Head. If reliable information would come from anyone in answer to that question, then it was from that particular person.

Megan continued towards the Castle with the group and it was mainly silent which made the trampling of grass beneath their feet seem to sound a lot more times louder. The grey vapor interested the woman. No doubt that was a remnant of the mist. Her heartbeats quickened when one of the MLE persons said they had found one of the students. Eyes widening slightly, she shot a look at Ursula. “The other student is probably around closeby,’’ she said sadly and softly. But she didn’t see him as yet.

As Darej followed the others when they were given the chance to enter in. Normally a sense of nostalgia would roll in, this was the grounds of the school he first stepped into when he was young. But the scenery it was just... non-living. He couldn't sense a creature, dark or not, in sight. It was unsettling to the man as he kept his eyes focused. The signs for creatures usually were in the vegetation, they marked their territory, but he didn't notice anything like that.

That's when he heard the words. They found one... dead. Both students must of perished. He deduced that if one was found in this state, then the other kid was in the same state as well. Darej wasn't new to death. He worked with creatures a good amount of time and came across other tragedies after losing acquaintances. But this.. he glanced over to see the grass was covering over the body as one of them went to collect. How sad. Death was sad but there was something that just hit you when it was kids. Their families were already in a rough spot too.... the only comfort they'll have is being able to have them home again.

Darej didn't say anything. He gave the sight a few seconds more out of respect before returning his focus on the surroundings again. Would something come out to try to keep them from collecting the kids?

Oh... Merlin.

Jake knew - he had known, deep down in his heart or his guts or whatever - that they would not be recovering any living students today. It had been too long. Admittedly there was the possibility that there were humans behind this, who had the kids as hostages - and, in his opinion it was usually a good idea to act as though missing people were still alive for that very reason - but... well, it hadn't seemed very likely.

But still, actually seeing those mounds... it wasn't easy. Jake didn't think a person could ever really get used to seeing things like this, no matter what job they did. Upon seeing the shapes from afar Jake had hoped they were simply part of the natural landscape, but you kind of got a sixth sense for nasty discoveries when working in his department.

"Over here," he murmured, stepping the few yards away to the second mound from which protruded what was clearly dusty blond human hair. Thadius Potter, if the photos of the missing kids were anything to go by. Just a boy. He crouched down beside him, but did not touch him.

Out of the corner of his eye, Jake noticed Ronan bending down as though he was going to pick up the figure of (almost certainly) Kamryn Keighley. "Wait," he advised, trying to keep his voice low, but still loud enough to hear. Jake looked towards Alexa and the other department heads, but mostly Alexa, to see how they should proceed. Did these areas need to be examined or something? Was something likely to suddenly leap out on them? As this was a potential crime scene, he didn't want to be too hasty with anything.

... He may also have glanced in the direction of Bryony Keighley. Jake was... concerned for her. Naturally.

Emilia stayed close to the others in her department, stepping as quietly as she could on the dead grass as they moved closer to the castle. Each sound, no matter how small, felt like a firework going off right overhead because of how silent the grounds were, how lifeless. It was why the words Ronan spoke seemed to hit that much harder, seemed so much louder. He'd found one. That mass on the ground, that had been a child. A laughing, living student and now...

Swallowing thickly, big brown eyes followed the sound of Jake's voice as he called for their attention. There on the ground was another mass, another child. She shivered, trying not to be in her feelings in the moment. She couldn't be, not if she wanted to get through this. They had a job to do, one that would prevent anyone else from suffering that fate.

...they were just kids.

Eyes widening slightly, she shot a look at Ursula. “The other student is probably around closeby,’’ she said sadly and softly. But she didn’t see him as yet.
Ursula nodded solemnly at Megan and was about to speak when Jake had spotted the body of Thadius Potter. Now both of the young victims had been located but at Jake's word of wait, she paused. After all, crime scenes shouldn't be tampered with and besides, the danger was still a looming presence.

Ursula's eyes were scoping the area around her but the rest of her body remained still.

It was strange, the whole thing. She had heard things about the mist, about DERP's excursion out here previously. It had sounded so dangerous, so frightening... but as Evangeline quietly stepped through the mist and across the Hogwarts grounds, she kept... waiting for something to happen. And nothing did happen. And she didn't doubt anyone's experience with the mist, clearly it was dangerous. Two children had gone missing, after all. She just wondered why nothing had happened yet. Was it resting?

With the thoughts of the children fresh on her mind, Evangeline's stomach dropped when she saw a lump on the ground as Ronan announced a missing student had been found. Her eyes landed on the frail hand of the young girl that wasn't bound by the earth that had covered the rest of the body. It was like... Hogwarts had tried to... lay them to rest.

Distracted more than she would have liked again, Evangeline caught herself after a moment of it and cleared her throat as Ronan was bending down to pick her up. "Wait," she ordered, holding her hand out to pause him. "Wait for direction. We still don't know what's going on here." Which meant, sure, Hogwarts could be trying to lay the girl to rest... or something was keeping her captive and would try and catch him too. Either way, Evangeline was responsible for the YATI and she wanted further instruction from Alexa before they attempted the bodies.

"I haven't detected anything out of the ordinary so far," Evangeline said to Alexa. "But I'm still on my toes." It didn't mean she wasn't wary, she just wasn't sure what this mist... this essence was up to.

For the most part, she hadn’t experienced any questioning glances about being there, and Bryony was grateful for that. She wasn’t going to back down from a situation just because it might be difficult. She hadn’t gone through all her years of training to do that. She wasn’t going to give anyone the satisfaction of saying she wasn’t doing her job. “I believe hadn’t considered any other causes from environmental effects, aside from the reports of something grabbing them,” she’d said softly, falling into line at the head of the contingent along with her fellow MLEers. Which seemed to infer some sort of creature involvement, and whatever it was likely was dark or they wouldn’t be there. As it was, she had been getting the odd feeling like the wisps of mist around them were watching their progress deeper into the grounds.

She hadn’t questioned their placement as the first wave, either. It was better that they be the first to encounter any dangers rather than the other departments. They were better prepared, even as she’d glanced at the sun-starved vegetation they hadn’t trampled with a critical and sympathetic eye. Even the grass seemed to need rescuing, and on that note, she’d glanced over as Carter had established he had found one of the students.

Only to silently realize she most definitely recognized the hand extended out from the mound of grass, and her thoughts started racing. Kamryn as an infant reaching out for her for the first time. Little Kam running for her after a nightmare because mum and dad’s room was too far away. Kam telling her that she wanted to become an Auror like her after graduation…

No. She shut that train of thought down nearly as soon as it had begun, compartmentalizing it away until she wasn’t working. She was here for a purpose, even though she silently acknowledged the glance her way from Upstead. She’d be okay. At least, for now she would be.

“Wait,” she thirded the hit wizard’s and Evangeline’s warning. “We don’t know exactly what put them in that state.” Whether it was Hogwarts or whatever the entity controlling the mist was. Whether it was a danger, and while they were there to combat danger, that didn’t mean being reckless.

Right. DERP had only gotten far enough to tell them they wouldn't die inhaling this stuff. Useful, yes, but very limited for a first mission into whatever this was. Olly, was a competent witch. Alexa chose to believe that them pulling back when they did before they could provide anything of real use was a last resort and only when they realized there was nothing else they could do.

Lex looked toward the castle, feeling whatever they were looking for was lurking just on the inside. She paused just shy of the door when she heard first Ronan then Jake.

For now abandoning the thought to lead everyone inside, Lex walked from one to the other. It wasn't that she didn't believe them--obviously not--but rather that she needed to see them. To confirm. Being the realist she was, the Department Head hadn't considered this a rescue mission. In her mind, it had always been a retrieval mission, but it didn't make it any less a shame.

She nodded to those who'd urged Carter to wait, a silent thanks while she took a closer look. "You're right." She told Evie. "I'm not picking up anything either." She cast on the first body she'd come up on, the younger. Thadius? Nothing. The Kamryn girl was no better. "Check the surrounding area. Traces of dark magic. Movements. Tracks. We'll need crime scene before we go moving them." Photographs, samples and other bits of evidence, they would all need to be collected. Lex nodded to those in that particular unit before gesturing the others on with a brisk wave of her hand in a forward motion.

"We don't know how they died, let's not take anything for granted. Follow me." And with that, she took the first tentative steps into the Entrance Hall--but only after a careful look inside and her wand at the ready the moment she got there. Constant vigilance was a real thing that every Auror lived by.

Oh, Derek was here? Jeez, how was he meant to feel about that? Derek was competent, sure, he knew his Potions and had probably stocked up for this as well, knowing him. But he also had less personality than a cucumber and the idea of working with him more than necessary only made Grayson roll his eyes.

Whatever. Eliora was here. She'd probably bring this up the next time they had a meeting so. SO. He gave Derek a nod as a greeting.

When it came time to moving forward, Grayson stood back. It made little sense for him, a Potions guy, to be front and centre when there were a bunch of defensive people here. And then there was the fact that he didn't want to soo sticking to the middle it was. And sticking close enough to Derek to see if the man had any instructions to add but not too close that he felt the need to talk or anything.

Though, on second thought, not much talking could happen here, it seemed. At the sound of a crunch, his eyes flew to his feet and he was surprised to find that he was alarmed. Merlin. And was that, squint, a bit of mist? This grey vapour? Leaning closer to Derek, he whispered, "Think we should take some samples of this?" Before it got worse and they were faced with something they couldn't handle.

Which was now, apparently.

At the sounds of two Law Enforcement people's voices, Grayson found a chill seeping into him that had nothing to do with this mystical entity or whatever it was. They'd found one. They'd found both of the students. Oh jeez. As much as he didn't want to, his eyes found the mounds on the ground while a sickening feeling settled into the pits of his stomach. They were kids. Kids. Probably not that much older than his son. And they looked lifeless, laying there covered in mounds from the ground.

Oh jeez.

Grayson quickly rubbed his eyes before doing what Lex had said: checking the area. Collecting samples. That nod was for his side of the team, the ones who were here to figure out what in the name of Merlin this entity was. But given what he'd just seen, the man wasn't even particularly excited about the chance to experiment with potions after this. A part of him, a huge part of him, wanted to go home or contact Flynn to see how he was doing.

Regardless, the former Slytherin muttered a small "C'mon," under his breath before moving away from the general march forward that some of the others were doing. Reaching into his small bag, he took out a corked vial and bent down near an empty patch of wilted grass. The vial was opened and held close enough to a part of the silver vapour, silently urging it inside. Whatever this was, whether it held any importance or whatever, it was going to be sampled.

Matt looked at the Castle, wondering what it looked like now and if the mist had done anything else to it apart from making it empty of living beings.

It was when he diverted his gaze back to the grounds and some others had moved towards specific spots that he also saw... them. He saw the hand of the girl, who was Anna's close friend. She was his sister's age, for Merlin's sake. And the boy was even younger. He took a deep breath and let it out, realising his exhaling was staggered.

Anna's friend... a girl Anna's age. The thought repeated over and over in his head as he watched the others approach the bodies and decide not to touch it. He also shot a glance at Bryony. If that had been Anna... he didn't even want to think about what he'd do right now. Matt genuinely thought it might not've been a good idea for his colleague to be there, for her own mental wellbeing.

Merlin.

He'd leave the bodies to those responsible for forensics and followed his boss into the Castle. Constant vigilance indeed. He was not going to end up like... Matt pushed the thought aside and looked around, wand always at the ready.

Derek was over the fact someone like Eliora was their Department head. Her personality annoyed the hell out of him, but at least she got things done. The man wasn't a fan of giving out instructions when they weren't to do with not touching things in his lab, so when Grayson asked him questions he stopped himself from rolling his eyes.

"Yeah." Was his professional response to the guy, as he himself got ready to pull out some empty vials from his rucksack. It was when he noticed some of Law Enforcement talking around something. Someone, rather. The kids have been found. Derek looked up towards them for a few seconds, quietly considering things as he watched MLE start moving towards the Castle.

And that was their cue. No, he didn't need Grayson the brat telling him to 'C'mon' and this time the frown he had been holding back finally made its way to his brow. It'd be ideal if Grayson could work without talking so much.

Derek gave MLE enough space to do whatever they needed to do with the bodies and let Grayson collect samples of the greyish vapour that was lingering around. He put his gloves on as he stepped closer to the bodies to assist the Forensics Team in whatever was needed, collecting samples of his own.

Benzi had seen a lot of haunting scenes in his years working for the DMLE. Dark wizards, anguish, pain, suffering, really awful things. He was prepared for everything, it was his job to be so, but he'd never felt that feeling of sheer helplessness the way he did when he saw the bodies. The auror's eyes searched for Amrita's in the crowd, allowing himself a brief moment of emotion.

Children had died. Children. If this mist was wizard made... whoever it was would go down to life. He'd personally see to it.

Twisting his wand in his hand, he carried out his own series of checks in the areas around the bodies, also finding nothing. Lex and Evie both were rarely wrong, but he had to check. Those poor children. It was only as his eyes landed on Bryony that he made the connection, and the sadness melted away into a subdued fury. That was her sister, half covered up by Hogwarts soil. Her sister that the YATI had tried to move. Benzi could not decide whether he was angry at his fellow auror for letting herself come on this job so recklessly, knowing that her sister was the one missing, or proud of her for showing up anyway and being professional.

Probably proud. Had this been, Merlin forbid, any of his family, no one could have held him back.

Removing these thoughts thoroughly from his mind, he joined his department head and stepped into the ever familiar but very empty entrance hall. Eleven years. "We should also check the evacuation point, see that the mist isn't making its way to Hogsmeade," he said as he glanced towards the stairs leading up into the heart of the castle. It would be catastrophic should the entire village need to be cleared too.

So, where is the mist?

__________

Bambi couldn't help it.

She had tried so so hard not to make a sound. She kept her mouth shut when the first body had been discovered, and then the second, and even kept quiet as the aurors went about their business as if this was just any old day. Everyone seemed to be acting like this was normal.

Turning away from the group, Bambi pretended to try looking for magic traces in the air - she's never had that talented - and a little squeak of a sob escaped her. And another, and another, several quiet squeaks of anguish for those young souls, taken so quickly. Had it not been for Ariadne, maybe this wouldn't have affected her this way, but she couldn't help but imagine... her little angel girl... her little cherub.

Hurriedly conjuring a tissue for herself, Bambi dabbed at her eyes and stayed at the back of the group. She really didn't want to make a scene, not in front of her own department and definitely not in front of the others. She needed to be useful, but her skills and expertise lay with wards. She'd be more helpful when they found the mist itself. Something in her toolbox would surely contain it.

Another squeak sob, a bit louder this time, and she tried to breathe deeply. Enough Bambi. Enough.

Amrita had known all along that they would not be recovering anyone living today. She knew that. She discussed that with Benzi, that the bodies they recovered would likely have begun decomposing, unless there were preservation spells of some sort cast on them. She knew what she was going to find, but somehow, that did not make it easier to look at. Not as a mother. Not as someone who spent their life waiting for someone to come home, someone who never did.

At least the families of these kids would get some closure now. Know for sure what happened. Had a body to bury. Not all were that lucky - she certainly wasn't, when her father went missing.

She refused to cry, and so she was not blinking, but the tears were welling in her eyes long before Benzi turned to meet them. The eye contact startled her into blinking, and she wiped the tears furiously away with the heel of the palm holding her wand. This aspen had not failed her yet. It would not fail her now, as she followed Alexa, with possibly the biggest team she had seen so far on the Auror Force.

Of all the operations set up for failure, this was not one of them.

"It would not be wise to go alone at all, despite the looks of things," the German Auror began, looking around (and pointedly not at the fallen students), and towards the castle she had never set foot in, but was soon going to have to trust with her daughter. "I'll go with him, if the main task force is going to survey the castle and grounds." Her voice was strong despite the redness of her eyes, lower lip still. The hand holding her wand felt warm, all of a sudden, the quasi-sentient wooden instrument offering its partner all the comfort in its power. The feeling familiar, it sparked something in her, the slow change in her belly from despair to determination.

They would get to the bottom of this. She was sure.

follow me; everything is all right.

To the relief of all, there would be no negative consequence to the recovery of the fallen. No Dark traps. No curses. Nothing but the peaceful return of two children to their loved ones waiting on baited breath.

The heavy tapestry of peaceful confusion blanketed the entire grounds. Footprints here and there could be found, the majority of them belonging to Hogwarts faculty and students, as well as the tracks of the creatures as they fled the area. However, some footprints would fade in and out. Some human-like ones making unnatural strides only to morph into some indistinguishable print in the next impression. The form of just what had created the print clearly changed.

But no. Nothing to be discovered Dark in nature. Nothing to be discovered was even wizard-made.

As doors to the great castle open and you enter, there is a brief pause before thick tendrils of mist began to curl and coil their ways out and down a few of the front steps and brought with it the icy shiver of fear and terror down the spines of any and all who came in contact with it. It's sudden appearance immerses the space in silvery haze, and the feeling was bone chilling and sweaty palm inducing. One may even begin to feel their pulse quicken and breath shorten as the feeling seeped in. Try and perform a Bubblehead Charm if you think it will help calm your nerves, but it will not lesson the sensation. The mist does not woosh out as one may have expected.

Then again, there was nothing particularly natural about this mist.

The halls of Hogwarts are quiet and dark, seemingly vacated of all living things. But then.....what was that dark shadow that suddenly moved away from that shadowy corner just now? And what had just caused that ominous clinking sound of glass being struck by something solid from the over by the hourglasses? Several clinking sounds, to be exact. Or that creaking of the door to the small little broomstick cupboard to the left that was shrouded in dark shadow without the torches lit above it?

Company has come to greet you.
