Default Mismatched Seating

This secret coffee niche, tucked into a caved-in passage behind a tapestry on Level 10, was nearly empty when it was first spotted. Over time, employees have been dragging in seating they've either scavenged or donated, leaving plenty of seats available. None of them match.

Take a seat on a crooked, squishy sofa, or pull up one of the kitchen chairs or stools that line one stone wall. Choose wisely - no one is really sure where these seats came from. At least someone has pulled in a few lamps and endless strings of Christmas lights to give the room a festive look.

Once she'd arrived at the Underground Coffee Club, Alysson pulled a miniature sofa out of her bag. She'd found it in their parents' - no, now Cooper's house when she'd been over for the Christmas holidays. No one knew who had bought it or what it was doing in the attic. But seeing as it was quite...unique neither her brother nor her brother's wife had objected to her bringing it back to London with her.

And this seemed like the perfect place to put it.

So, carefully setting it down onto the floor, next to the other seats, Alysson straightened up again and pointed her wand at it. A second and an Engorgement Charm later, she took a step back. Interesting. Yes, definitely the right place. With a slightly amused smile playing around her lips she simply looked at the sofa for a moment longer before moving ahead and taking a seat on it.

Now, William, where was he? She'd brought a sofa.

William had heard about this secret coffee club which sounded like the perfect fit for him. 1) It had coffee, which was a necessity in the morning, especially the morning after a weekend; and 2) It was something of a dumping ground for mismatched furnishings one didn't really want anymore.

He peeked into the coffee club, ugly Christmas gift from Wanda in hand, and smiled to see Alysson already there. "Hey," he greeted her lightly, looking around for a place to park this lamp. It was making his hand tired uglier the longer it stayed with him, so he cleared off some space on an end table and left it there. Stupid thing. His sister was the WORST at picking gifts.

Then he seated himself beside his girlfriend, nice and close, and gave her a little peck on the cheek. "How are you?"

Oh...wow.

And no, that wasn't a reaction to William coming in but rather to the thing he was holding. Wow. Just. Alysson watched when her boyfriend went ahead and set it down on a nearby table. What WAS that thing? And what was it doing here? She'd seen a lot of ugly things but this...this was something else.

Alysson took a moment to smile at William when he sat down next to her - yes she very much appreciated the closeness and the kiss, yes - before leaning over him slightly to get a better look of the ugly thing again. "What's that?" Yes, this question had to be answered before they could talk about or do anything else. This was important.

William returned Aly's smile, of course, but then.... she was leaning over him to look at that lamp. THAT LAMP.

"Wanda," he sighed in reply. WANDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! "My sister gave that to me for Christmas. She knows I like creatures, she even KNOWS what creatures I like," duh, dragons, "but she thought it would be funny if she gave me a gnome lamp. I don't know." He shook his head. "Sisters."

Wanda had certifiably weird tastes. Just look at her obsession with Oliver. Weiiiiiiiiiiiiird. "How bout this place though, huh?" Willy changed the subject brightly, patting the bouncy sofa they were sitting on. "Great place."

So it was a christmas present from his sister. Wow.

"She's got great taste." She was joking. He could tell, right? But somehow it was quite amusing and it showed when she leaned back to rest her back against the sofa again. There was a grin on her lips.

Alysson dismissed the 'sisters' comment with a shrug. She wouldn't know what 'sisters' did seeing as SHE was the sister in the family. "Maybe I should start buying my brothers one of these lamps as well. You don't happen to know where Wanda got this one, do you?" Once again, just joking.

Though it WOULD be hilarious to see Jeremy's reaction to unwrapping that.

Great place, yes. "I brought the sofa." Which was certainly an interesting addition to this place, was it not?

Level ten was about as far away from level one and two as one could get without leaving the Ministry itself, and so, it seemed the only appropriate place to hide out for lunch. Here, she was close enough for the ease of returning to her department - should any demanding issues arise, and still she was far away enough to not have to concern herself with interruptions and unnecessary run-ins with people she didn't care to share her time with.

"And we're helping ourselves to dinner at yours tonight, Zeke wants to pick Ashley's brain about French... he has his make-up test tomorrow and is still convinced he's too sick to go in." Fever fudge wasn't going to scam her into letting him take another day off school. Still, the kid had guts and stupid enough to down a whole box of it in one sitting to begin with. Idiot kid. He was destined to die young.

With Gavin in tow, Emily directed them behind the tapestry and through the hole in the wall. Emily placed their lunch bag from the bakery down on the table between them before inspecting the chairs for selection... neither really seemed to take her fancy on this occasion. It had been her turn to shout lunch, and so that's exactly what she did. There was nothing better than sweet and savoury pastries now was there? Especially not with the fine brew this little nook had to offer. "They have the best coffee here," she informed Gavin, already itching to make them a cup.

Had he ever ventured down to level 10? Possibly not but if he had he couldn't remember. Was there a food court there? Did Emily not get that a lunch break meant a break in which he didn't think about business? Level 10 held the coutrooms, she was MLE, forgive him while he went to all the wrong conclusions ever. Truthfully, he didn't mind where she was taking him because she did have food in her hand and he was perfectly fine watching her work while he ate, it wouldn't be the first.

His interest was peaked by the mention of her and Zeke coming over for dinner. He didn't really care what the reason was, they were welcomed regardless. "He's in luck. That's all they talk at home." But he must have learned that by now. The kid was an idiot but he wasn't dense. "I suppose if I mentioned he was trying to get some French help they'd be especially insistent with it." Ashley, moreso. It was a dangerous thing whenever that little girl got the upperhand in a situation. It was possible Zeke would leave hating French more than when he arrived but that was life.

And had this tapestry always been here--there was a hole in the wall. Emily, look, a hole in the wall. "Really should get Maintenance on that." He pointed out even as they stepped through the hole. How long had it been like this.....? Blink. "How long has this been here?" He asked, absentmindedly looking around as he took a seat--but not before making it sturdier with a spell. After the broken down building he wasn't so trusting of odd furniture. Go figure.

Despite them being in her neck of the woods, she couldn't say she was all too familiar with the hang out, having only discovered it after hearing about it from an employee. Industrious workers, Branxton particularly. But it was quickly becoming her favourite lunchtime destination. It beat the food court... with the exception of their desserts - something she still couldn't say no to.

The French bit she was familiar with, all too familiar with by now - nobody could tell her she was rusty anymore, having been exposed to it for so long. She used it occasionally with Zeke, shorter, simpler sentences or phrases, key terms and the like... but there was only so much the boy could absorb. "I don't doubt this for a second, and with any luck he'll walk away knowing a little more than when he arrives." At any rate, he surely couldn't know any less. So that was a bonus.

She didn't for a second take Gavin's comment seriously. Get maintenance onto it? Psssshhh, yeah, right. And ruin her good-mood-inducing-coffee-place. No. Fat chance of that happening. "I'm actually not sure. I've passed the tapestry too many times to count, but I didn't know about the place till soon after we got back from the break." It couldn't have sprouted up after the Christmas break, surely. It seemed too established for that, just simply exclusive. Transfiguring a squishy ratty armchair into something more regal and clean looking, Emily pushed the paper bag to him. "How about you unpack while I get coffee?" Because it would make her day, obviously.

'Great taste' was..... definitely a joke, right? William's brows went up a little bit, even if Aly was grinning.

"I think, if you get one of those for your brothers, the question everyone will want to know is what did they do to you to deserve it?!" He let out a small chuckle. "Luckily, I do not know where Wanda got it." Or he would have returned it for the cash.

Oh, snap, THIS sofa? "This is so much better than that lamp," Willy gave it another appreciative nod. "How did you get it in here?" She was stronger than she looked OR magic was the answer. Probably magic.

As it turned out they weren't on their way to any of the courtrooms but some place hidden away from...well him, he didn't know this place existed and he'd have been put off that no one mentioned it but then he thought about it and really, who would he have talked to to hear about it? It wasn't like he made a habit of leaving his office, or inviting others in for small chats. No.

"It's a given he'll learn something while there. Possibly that Ashley's bossier in French, or maybe that Avery rambles more in French--I'll go with 'that he never wants to hear another drop of it'." But of course they could have some faith in the boy. They always seemed to have a lot to talk about, switching the language in which they did that shouldn't have been too much of a task, the girls did it everyday. Though in all fairness they did have more practice time, years of it actually. "Make up test though? He's failing?" Even after the Christmas they had in France? Perhaps he'd start insisting they use more French during sleepovers as well, as much as the girls liked going easy on him once he was frustrated enough.

So the tapestry HAD been here a while? Seriously? There was so much in this building that he didn't know about, including that new room the Minister had drawn to his attention over the break. It was disconcerting when you factored in how observant he considered himself to be. "That I can do." He agreed, reaching into the bag and pulling out two sandwiches...then a cupcake....a cinnamon roll...two Danish....Gavin's eyes shifted to her. "How's about I fetch you some water instead?" All this SUGAR, jeez Emily. He could feel the diabetes coursing through his veins just looking at it.

At first she was under the impression Gavin was being optimistic, but her mildly surprised expression soon subsided. "Those are more likely, though I doubt he could like the language any less than he already does." He could be immature about it too, which annoyed her more than his failures. Fingers in ears, eyes shut and la la la... was not the correct way to problem solve or learn. What he needed to learn, was that problems didn't disappear just like that. They also didn't just disappear if they were set on fire, put in the bin, hid under the bed, or taken away by his owl. "Dismally," she acknowledged. She didn't like his chances of being sorted into Ravenclaw, something they had discussed on more than one occasion. "He's managing to just pass most of his subjects now, but math and French are almost a lost cause." She'd tried her best. Hours of tuition, all her patience, and very little to show for it. This parenting thing was hard work.

She did have her reasons for wanting him to unpack, and for her to quickly disappear until he introduced himself to, and accepted her spoils. Though, she didn't get very far when she heard his question about the water. Water? No. She had enough of that in her office, she didn't need anymore thank you. Not to say she drank much of it, but it was there. "A girl's gotta eat, doesn't she?" she chuckled over her shoulder, brushing it all off and grinning as she turned back to the coffee station. See, good mood already, and all because of the promise of good coffee - and his company, of course. The Senior Undersecretary should be taking notes on this experience.

Two cups of joe, and a hint of cinnamon in hers - something she couldn't get enough of - and she returned to their table, a quick glance trailing over the couple at the table across from them. Familiar faces. One of them, one of her own. Alysson received a nod from her, and a smile too. Good mood, see. "I'll have some water when I get back to the office, how's that?" she negotiated, pushing Gavin his coffee while raising her own to her lips.

Contrary to Emily's belief Gavin could see room for a bit more hatred where the language was concerned. Children had a knack for becoming impassioned about the things they hated, he'd seen it first hand. Zeke could be worse, though he doubted it would be at the hands of his nieces. That would have been a stretch. "You know...that offer of wit-sharpening potion is still on the table. I have a few vials left over, they could come in handy. Who's to say he won't learn more while under one of those?" A potioneer's solution to what might have been a very simple problem but there you had it. Becoming Senior Undersecretary did nothing to curb his dependence on potions. Not even a little. "It's not like it matters anyway. He's got what? 4 months of school left then he's headed to Hogwarts where he won't be needing any of that every again. I can't see any harm in him failing through the muggle system." It's why he and his siblings were never put through such rigors. Their system was inadequate at best.

A girl's gotta eat hardly justified all that she'd bought and if he wasn't mistaken--which he obviously wasn't-- there was something else in the bag. "How have you not been admitted to St. Mungo's yet?" He questioned, leaning forward onto the table and giving her a look as if this were genuine curiosity and not condemnation. Of course they both knew what it really was. No denying it.

His gaze mirrored hers until he spotted the two by the sofa. Wasn't that Williamson? He'd have waved or given some other indication of recognition but the man seemed preoccupied with his company and Gavin was hardly one to intrude so instead he turned his attention back to Emily. "You might drop dead before then and this compromise would have been in vain. You never know when the next pastry will be your last." A perfectly dismal outlook on things yes, he was aware but one of them had to think this way. Couldn't be carried off by the promise of sweet things. They often lied.

She didn't waste any time in sipping from her coffee... but her lips were too sorry to part with it, and so it turned out she easily down a third of the cup before forcing herself to leave it there. "Do me a favour," she started, pushing her cup further back and drew the bag nearer to her, "spike his juice when we get there, he needs all the help he can get." She wasn't going to see him fail and mope around the house again with the I told you so. Those were words she'd soon rather have him write out a hundred times and eat for breakfast. With regard to his education not mattering... Emily couldn't agree with that. "I can see a lot of harm in it. Without literacy and numeracy he'll struggle even in our world, and knowing French wouldn't hurt, all things considered." If they were going to keep using it around him, and make the occasional trip to the country, the boy would benefit from knowing how to hold a conversation in it all on his own. Knowing he'd soon be at Hogwarts did nothing to make her feel better. A strange sensation. She'd... miss him, and be worried sick about him too. The trouble he could get into, and if he was struggling with muggle school, what hope did he really have of doing much better at Hogwarts? Learning was learning.

Feeling slightly dejected with the turn the conversation had taken, Emily reached her arm into the bag and removed the last item. A chocolate creme croissant... which she was claiming ahead of her sandwich. Proper food could wait. Her hazel eyes flickered up at Gavin's question, and his expression only served to amuse her. She didn't have an answer for it, sarcastic, rhetorical or otherwise and so instead she just made a show of her glowing healthy habits by tearing off the corner of her croissant, exposing the rich dark chocolate cream and popped it in her mouth. "I manage," she added as an after thought.

Gavin's dramatics, only lifted her mood more, and now she was back to that good, happy state she was in only moments ago. "You seem to be awfully vested in my diet, Mr. Isaacs," she noted, picking off more of her croissant and washing it down with coffee. "But don't you have a potion for that?" she teased. Something to stop her from getting fat, developing diabetes or any other ailment she might ingest through buttery, flaky pastry.

"Now try your coffee, I poured it in a cup with patience and love." Yeah, that stuff. Either way, the brew was life changing and he ought to show his appreciation.

Oh, snap, THIS sofa? "This is so much better than that lamp," Willy gave it another appreciative nod. "How did you get it in here?" She was stronger than she looked OR magic was the answer. Probably magic.
What they'd done to deserve it. Alysson's lips curled into a grin as she thought on this a little. "Oh trust me, they do actually deserve something like this." Not that she was truly going to spend money on such an ugly lamp. It was fun picturing their reactions to it though.

A direct order to have the potion dropped into the kid's drink. This proved things were all kinds of serious and got a raise of his brows before finally a nod of agreement. "Could tip a little extra into his dessert as well. Ari bought ice-cream, he'll hardly notice." Nevermind both her children being lactose intolerant, his sister was of the impression he had a potion for everything--which wasn't completely off--so she worried about nothing. As for her disagreement, Gavin gave a small shrug, still not seeing how it could be that big of a deal. "The way I see it, he can read." the kid had to be able to read with all the things he and Ashley got into and the ideas they sometimes had. They had to come from somewhere. "And I suspect he's got enough of a head on his shoulder about numbers, specifically money which is usually what you need numbers for. He'll live." It was the choices he made that should have had Emily concerned. Gavin didn't think he was an idiot just for the sake of being mean, sometimes he genuinely wondered if the boy thought anything through.

Ah, yes, she managed. He watched, somewhat amused by her show of pinching away at the croissant. See, he knew there was something else in that bag. It was never imagining anything when it came to Emily. Extra sugar was expected. "I'm sure you do. You're a walking inspiration to sugar addicts everywhere. She was proof that sugar didn't send you to an early grave, because yes he still figured that with all her bad guy fighting and life endangering it would be the sugar that did her in.

Gavin genuinely laughed at her question. She was mocking him, that much he could tell but that didn't make it any less funny. "I might have a potion for that actually, but who's to say I'd ever give it to you?" If you asked him that had to be the question of the year--No, he took that back.

"Poured with love?" THAT was the question of the year and he might have had a satisfied smirk as he lifted the cup to his lips. Love, he seemed to remember her cringing at that word in all contexts. "Fascinating."

With any luck she wouldn't be shaking her head with disappointment once his results came in. She found it hard not to, and whenever she did, his face fell into that mopey kicked-puppy look... she loathed that look, because it meant reassuring and caring and getting the boy to smile again - which granted, wasn't hard, but it was effort. "If you think it'll help," she mused, though she couldn't see him being productive once dessert was served. Still, anything was possible, and for the sake of her sanity she was going to give this optimism thing a crack. Emily nod her head from side to side, reluctantly. Gavin wasn't wrong on that point. Zeke could read, to an extent, and he could count money, but beyond that she would be instilling a great deal of hope into Hogwarts and its ability to teach her son. He would live, yes... but would he live well? "Mmm..." she didn't say anything else on the matter, there was little good that could come from dwelling on such things right now.

The croissant was going down a treat, and was even better with the coffee, the hint of cinnamon just lifting the experience to the next level. Chewing was all she could do to mask the grin that threatened to happen at his comment. A walking inspiration, yeah, something like that. "I should be commended and celebrated for my efforts," she joked. Though she probably had managed to eat enough pastries in her lifetime to form a small hill if not a mountain.

It hadn't escaped her that he hadn't started eating yet, though she wasn't going to press him to do so. Gavin wasn't a child, and the less he ate, the more that was left for her, so it wasn't really a loss. When he started laughing though, she raised a brow curiously. She hadn't meant to be funny - or at least, not that funny. "Oh?" she questioned at the revelation. He would hold back on her? She doubted this, but he still raised the question.

...

....

And then he went there. Did she stutter? Emily stared at him blankly across the table. "That's what I said," she clarified, watching as he raised the cup to his lips. Never mind that there was the patience part too, he just had to focus on the other. And what exactly was fascinating? It was hardly a term she'd use to describe a cup of joe. "So what's the verdict?" she asked, knowing full well he wasn't a connoisseur when it came to coffee, but an opinion would be appreciated nonetheless.

Did he think it would be of much help? Objectively? It was possible and he could give her a vial or two to take home, feed it to him with his breakfast before the test so Gavin nodded. There was all kinds of hope for the kid when you used the right potion in the right dosage amount. The 'Mmm' he figured was as close to her admitting he had a point as he would get and he'd take it. He knew enough to survive the real world and when did a wizard ever need algebra anyway? A bunch of letters and numbers mixed together, he didn't even know letters had their own nummerical value. Strange.

That wasn't exactly what he'd been implying when he called her an inspiration to sugar addicts all over but he could have let her have it...could have. Didn't mean he would. "I was more thinking of you being somewhat of a source. You know what happens to the source when someone's trying to take down an entire system?" She could answer that question while he unwrapped his sandwich, her knowing military strategy and all that in some capacity.

He'd only gotten in a bite before she thought to seriously question an idle statement. He could indulge her in the truth or he could poke fun at her for a bit. The second option always proved the more dangerous but how seriously could she really take him in the end? "It's got the same prinicple of you knowing fire burns but playing with it anyway then coming to me for a healing salve--of course I'd give you the salve eventually but that's it, eventually." After he'd poked his fun and had his laugh.

Emily may not have been seeing what was so fascinating in her choice of words but he did. She said love and didn't ask for mouth wash shortly after or grimace or make a face. This was what the common man deemed improvement in the same way he'd improved where contact was concern. "Just making sure." He commented with a casual shrug and another sip of the coffee. "I'll admit it's even better than the stuff they have on level 3." The place he formally thought had the best coffee. This was good to note.

"I trust you, but I don't really know your brothers," William admitted with a chuckle of his own. Alysson certainly seemed devious enough to pull off gifting them an ugly lamp. She'd probably do it better than Wanda had, too, with her silly little shrugs and 'I thought you liiiiiiiiiked gnomes' excuses. Hmph.

His gaze trailed after his girlfriend's to where a pair of lovebirds were whispering and eating or whatever nearby... and then William's eyeballs nearly popped out of his head. Holy Merl--- was that GAVIN, João's boss, and EMILY?! The Evil Emily that had COMPLAINED about him to his BOSS?!?! The one that had KEPT HIM from GETTING A PROMOTION!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"I think..." he was suddenly very uncomfortable in this room, unable to focus on Alysson, and tugged at the collar of his shirt nervously. "I think that's nice," about the purse thing, "and that we should go." Yep, his break was over. He'd swing by and get a cup of joe on the way out. Willy stood up and offered her a hand. "You coming?"

There was very little that could be said to reassure her about Zeke's prospects, and though Gavin seemed to be the bearer of hope with all his potions and whatnot, she was beginning to doubt whether a wit-sharpening potion would have enough brunt to do the kid justice. Or was she being too harsh? Perhaps. Either way, his small nod didn't do anything to instill confidence in the matter, it was simply something to be endured - like a storm.

And again, he didn't seem to be complimenting her thoughts much at all. She was certain her interpretation of his original statement was correct, and she was an inspiration to be emulated... though, apparently not. "Uh huh," she murmured, sipping her coffee once more. The faith he had in her was phenomenal, overwhelming even... ..... .... "I'm better than that," she stated simply. Would be deny it? Now there was a thought to mull over. Instead of dwelling on the negative, she continued to focus on the positive, her croissant. Taking another bite, she relaxed a bit more in her seat.

As for Gavin rabbiting on about healing salves and fires and whatnot... it was irrelevant. Emily stared, sipped what remained of her coffee and stared, before finishing her croissant and moving on to open her sandwich. "It's a good thing I'm a big enough girl and can look after myself then," she replied idly, convinced that she didn't need him or anyone else to save her. She was no damsel in distress after all.

Focusing not on what he had said, but on what the topic she preferred given the options, Emily considered Gavin's statement regarding the coffee. It was better than level three, hands down, but it was also easily the best coffee in the Ministry - and she would know, having sampled it all at one time or another. "Leaps and bounds better than level three," she clarified out of necessity. It wasn't to say the stuff was bad, it was rather decent, but in comparison... it was weaker. Taking a bit of her sandwich, Emily instinctively moved to wash it down with another mouthful of coffee... only to realise that there was none. Cups needed to start refilling themselves, or heads would roll.

"You coming?"
...

......she'd missed something.....

Clearly. And she was usually a really observant person. That was part of her job description after all. So this was even more frustrating. The fact that something was off about William all of a sudden and she had absolutely no idea what made Alysson frown slightly. Her brain was trying to connect the dots but somehow she hadn't quite arrived at a conclusion just yet.

Not until William suddenly suggested they leave. Her eyes darted around the room once more, briefly lingering on the other two people present. She got off the couch almost automatically, using William's hand to pull herself up.

And closer to him so she was right in front of him and could give him a curious look. "Why are we leaving?"

The matter of the potion was settled fine enough. He could tell she wasn't all that convinced but then when was she ever without some tangible proof alluding to the effectiveness? Gavin on the other hand was going to believe til the last minute that Zeke wasn't beyond helping. It helped him sleep better at night when he thought of all the time his nieces spent with him.

Gavin did little to hide his amusement at her clarifying she was better than his earlier assessment. By no means was he disagreeing on the matter, in fact that's what they'd been getting at this whole time. He took another bite of his sandwich while she had another go at her croissant, just letting the air of amusement sink in before, "I know." Because he obviously did. "It was a compliment, though I suppose the only good compliments I give are the ones to myself. I should work on that." Source had been a compliment. Better than one of the brainwashed learning from the source. See? He was calling her a leader of sorts, despite her lead being down a path of sugary death but that was minor detail here sorta.

He raised an eyebrow at her declaration. Very good thing." He confirmed, biting into his sandwich yet again. Emily was the last person to ever need saving or crucial help from others. They'd talked about this. Rabid creatures gnawing away at her legs, that whole story. "But wouldn't you rather my help?" Serious question here. Like egos at stake and everything!!

How curious, she'd run out of coffee. He still had plenty of coffee, mhm, did she see? Some people never savoured and this was what happened. Though it was only half true. That croissant was still living. Some savouring was taking place. Across from them he could see the two leaving. Shame. "Who stocks the coffee in this place?" It had only ust occurred to him to ask. A hole in the wall he didn't know about and it had it's own coffee? Surely he wasn't the only one who chose to question something like this...or maybe he was.

He never ceased to amaze her. Never. Content with there being food in her mouth - consequently leading to her belly - Emily took her time in chewing before responding. "You make it sound like a chore," she observed. The whole complimenting thing. It came too easily where he was concerned, particularly his face, how he couldn't use the skill for the benefit of others was beyond her, though it wasn't something she really cared for. She could live without compliments, so long as there was respect.

She was set on helping herself to a mouthful of her sandwich when Gavin opened a can of worms, so to speak. The fact that she could look after herself was a good thing, yes... but his question regarding his help... she couldn't see this going anywhere good anytime soon, so she did the only logical thing she could do. Eat. Until she thought of something nice-ish to say. Needless to say, she chewed in quiet contemplation for a generous moment, fixating on him across the table. Where other matters were concerned, every day matters, "I already do." She'd have never lasted this long with the kid if it hadn't have been for him keeping her sane at the best and worst of times. But despite her lack of ego, she was still too proud a person to rely on anyone for help, including Gavin. Help denoted weakness, something she was keen to avoid at all cost.

Sandwiches were all well and great, but when push came to shove, she needed something to wash it down with, and the lack of coffee in her cup was not conducive to this. "I actually don't know," she replied truthfully, a slight shrug for emphasis. Would this piece of news disturb him? "As far as I can tell, anyone could be responsible for it, numerous people even.." it was a mystery to her, one she didn't much fancy solving. It was part of its charm. The only instance in which she would want to spoil things by investigating, was if the quality dropped, someone was poisoned, or someone died... but her paranoia wasn't rabid today.

He just really, really needed to get out of here, before he said anything. The conversation from his boss' office was still very fresh in the back of his mind, and William knew that if he stayed here any longer, even just to explain why he had to leave to Alysson, he would regret it. He would say the wrong thing. He would make his department look bad. He would lose any chance he had for a better job.

So instead, just just gave her a troubled look and started to lead the way out. "I'll tell you outside." Outside in the courtrooms, or outside the Ministry altogether. He just had to remain professional at work now, see? Because sometimes he felt too passionate about things and people and he couldn't get in trouble anymore. He just couldn't.

"A chore? Mmmm, no." Gavin bit thoughtfully into his sandwich, considering what she'd said. He didn't know if he'd be willing to classify complimenting others as a chore...but it was something. What? He didn't know at first but then, "It's more a challenge I'm getting better at overcoming." To compliment one needed to note the good qualities in another and verbalize them. There was hardly a time Gavin paid attention to anything but himself but these days that was changing--a little. Most things were still disregarded, Emily was not.

The pause that fell between them had him lowering his sandwich. Would she answer at all? It seemed like something that required a lot of thought though he could never see why. Anything could have gone here; a sarcastic declaration of her inability to function without him, some ego deflation as she pointed out the obvious that was her stern independence, a comment on the weather. So long as she answered. It was the unspoken conversations that you had to be concerned about. After much coffee sipping and returned stares an response was offered. "Great." He said, adding a drop of cheer to his tone in an attempt at lifting the conversation again. "So when you've come to the conclusion that sugar is the ultimate evil, I can brew something up and we'll get you cured of this love you've got for it." That was an option too if only in jest.

Then she said it. She didn't know. The Senior Undersecretary found himself eyeballing the cup of coffee in his hand. Just. STARING. Emily didn't seem too bothered but...it...the coffee....Was this living on the edge???? WAS THIS MEANT TO BE THRILLING?? The added mystery brought on by ignorance? Quite casually he put his cup down. He'd be observing everyone for the next month. If anyone started acting funny, he was having this hole sealed. The sandwich was still okay. At least they both knew where she got them. "An investigation you aren't keen on diving into. I'm impressed. You're getting better at separating break and work." Though he was sure she still worked through lunch sometimes. No evidence needed.
