Default Transfiguration Lesson: Do the Monster Mash

It’s a sleepy October afternoon at Hogwarts, but not just any October afternoon. Today is the day before Halloween. If the holiday slipped your mind, one look into the transfiguration classroom will instantly remind you. The desks are arranged in their usual rows, but that’s the only thing normal about the classroom’s appearance. Posters of classic movie monsters adorn the walls ( 1 2 3 4 5 6), and there are several dummies of varying heights and skin tones lined up along the back of the room. A large trunk sits at the front where Professor Carton’s desk would normally be. What’s inside? Supplies for a costume party, perhaps?

Even the professor himself has gotten in on the act with a “costume” of sorts. A large brown dog with bluish-green eyes sits calmly beside the trunk, in the exact spot where Professor Carton would usually stand. If the hair and eye color don’t make it obvious that the dog is the professor in animagus form, its behavior will. The dog!professor watches the door for students, and with each new arrival, it jerks its head toward the chalkboard where the following message is written:

Fynn wasn’t the overeager type when it came to celebrating Halloween and hadn’t planned a costume out for the celebration at all and would likely throw something together last minute like he always did should the occasion come up. Fynn was also not the type to listen intently in class and partake in question and answer activities which was why he was staring down at his blank parchment paper and nonchalantly tapping his quill until the fun part of the lesson started.

Fynley actually enjoyed Transfiguration when it came to the practical side but the recollection of facts read from textbooks and the several questions asked at once had left his arm firmly down by his side.

It's true the canary cream itself wasn't exactly what Vera had been thinking would be the most helpful type of Transfiguration, but now that she'd said it and Carton had not followed her train of thought to other types of spells that would do something similar as the creams except... with longevity, well she was committed. And as for a particular use? She could probably come up with a million. But if he was looking for something purely logical, he had asked the wrong Gryffindor. "Hypothetically speaking, if one was not gifted with Transfiguration but needed to say.. get past a security gaurd or a Professor or someone in a hallway, you might be able to pop in the canary cream and speed your way past into a safe zone where people can't see you anymore. Hypothetically." It was too bad Hogwarts corridors seemed too long for little wings to effectively take her in such a short span of time.

Ah, but yes they were moving on now! And talking about changing physical appearance! Which sounded fun, but also made her really miss her rainbow touch where she'd been able to change her hair instantly whenever she'd wanted. It had been such a helpful tool. At the next question, her hand shot into the air and she waited to be called on to offer her own unhelpful insight. "I think being an animagi has to be the most helpful of the different types of transformations, though I suppose even more so dependent on what your form is. But considering how difficult it is to become one, I think we do have to learn more easy to attain spells and rely on those that could kind of achieve the same goals." Maybe not a canary cream. But like... something that could temporarily turn you into an animal. Like a ferret! And while she probably should have known the name to that or Carton might have expected more of an actual spell named answer...

She had nothing.

Remy sighed a little, only because her answer wasn't necessarily relevant but another student had taken her first answer so it totally wasn't her fault. Still, it wasn't a bad thing to think outside of the box, she supposed. There were a range of questions to be answered next, and while Remy would love to answer them all, she suddenly was feeling a little anxious that she would say something incorrect.

"An advantage would be that you could look interesting and unique every single day." Remy answered with a grin, since mostly everyone else had gone with disadvantages. There certainly wasn't many disadvantages to Transfiguration in her eyes!!! To extend her answer with a suggestion of a situation where it was useful, Remy added, "Halloween. That's the perfect situation to change your appearance." A lot quicker than purchasing or creating a costume anyawy.

Norman was not at all surprised that the first answer mentioned involved botched transfigurations. It was an important point and as such, received an approving nod. “Quite right, Mr. Bergstrand,” he said. “Which is why clear focus and visualization are so important when attempting transfiguration.”

Not only were both examples plausible, but he was pleased that the boy provided scenarios for both human and animal transformations. “Very good examples, Mr. Ramsey,” he replied. “I’m glad you made the distinction between human and animal transfigurations.”

For the record, Norman was not disappointed to learn that Rasting hadn’t used a switching spell to create her horns. It was an impressive display of magic, no matter how she’d done it. He was, however, mildly surprised when the girl didn’t offer an answer to the following questions. His bluish-green eyes flicked in her direction just long enough to catch sight of her parchment. That counted as an answer.

Norman was wondering when or if someone would mention the role one’s mannerisms played in disguise. He gave a slight smile as Fox brought it up. “Excellent point, Mr. Fox,” he replied. “The ability to adapt one’s mannerisms can make or break a disguise.” He’d seen it happen many times in his Auror training days!

While searching the room for more hands in the air, Norman’s eyes momentarily lingered on Ellis. Would the boy have anything to add? No? Okay, moving on…

Norman considered Thanatos’s scenario carefully. While there were many variables involved, such as how fast one could move in such a limited amount of time and how far away the safe zone was, it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility. “That might work,” he replied with a nod. Another approving nod soon followed for her next response. “Good points. There are many animal transformation spells which one could use as a simpler alternative to becoming an animagus. Migalifors, for example. That spell turns its target into a ferret.”

Norman heard Gaeltheos’s sigh, but while he vaguely wondered what that was about, he saw no reason to draw attention to it. The girl’s answer to the following question got a slight smile from him. “Yes, and what a creative advantage that would be,” he replied. She was onto something about Halloween as well, but he’d come back to that in a bit.


Seeing no more hands in the air, Norman addressed the group once more, “Good answers! All of you raised some important points, which I hope you’ll keep in mind during our spell practice today. We’ll be covering three simple spells to change one’s eye color, hair, and height/build, respectively. The first of which is Ristaris. This spell changes its target’s eye color. To cast, tap your head once with your wand and say the incantation Ristaris.”

He tapped his head with his wand and repeated the incantation, “Ris-TAR-is!” In an instant, his eyes changed from their normal bluish-green color to brown. He paused for a few moments to allow time for the information to sink in. Everyone following so far? Okay, moving on!

“Ristaris can also be used to change hair color, but today we’ll be learning another hair coloring spell that also alters hair style and texture. That spell is one that came up earlier, Crinis Muto.” There may have been a sidelong look of acknowledgement in Bergstrand’s direction. “The wand movement is the same as Ristaris’s, one tap to the head.” To demonstrate, Norman tapped his head with his wand once more and said, “Crin-IS MU-to.” His dark hair gradually turned blonde, curled, and lengthened to shoulder length.

After another pause, he moved on to the final spell of the day. “Our last spell for today alters its target’s height and build. The wand movement is a little different; this time you’ll tap your head twice. The incantation for this one is Tirinum.” Norman gave two more taps to his head and repeated the incantation, “Tir-IN-um.” The transformation left him half a foot shorter and much chubbier than before.

With the final transformation completed, Norman might’ve been completely unrecognizable to anyone who hadn’t seen the transformation with their own eyes… which was why he’d waited until class time to do it. Seeing a strange-looking man first thing might’ve been jarring for the student, not to mention a huge security issue! He kept his new look for only a few minutes before reverting back to his normal appearance, lest the change cause a distraction going forward.

“I’d like you to take a few minutes to practice these three spells on the dummies at the back of the room,” he instructed, gesturing toward the dummies. “I’ll be coming around to help those who need it. Spell information is on the board. You may begin now!”

With a wave of his wand, the following information appeared on the board:

The more Professor Carton talked and outlined the lesson for the day, the more excited the fourth year became. Spells to change eye color? Hair color? HEIGHT!? The 5 foot Gryffindor was particularly excited by the last possibility, and the way she was bouncing in her spot probably indicated as much. The only thing that WAS disappointing so far was that instead of practicing on each other, they'd be utilizing dummies. Where was the trust, Professor C? The high stakes of getting it right???

She'd forgive that though considering how cool everything else was. So the moment they were released to start practicing, she was up and racing back to claim a dummy. "I'm happy to share if anyone wants!" Maybe if someone DID they could make a game out of it. Like... those old toys were you flipped through a book to change different parts of a body. They could do something like THAT!

In the mean time, she'd get started with some pronunciation. Eyes seemed a good place to start. That's what she noticed about people first, so... fitting. Leaving her wand in her holster for the moment, she just tried the word. "Ris - TAR - is. Ris - TAR - is. Ristaris." Easy enough. Pulling out her wand, she stood tiptoe to tap the head of the dummy. "Ristaris!" Only for the hair to change to blue instead of eyes.

Uhhh... kind of correct?

Hope felt a little shy about offering to pair up with a fourth year, but the other girl's excitement for the activity was contagious. Repeating the three spells over and over under her breath, she walked up to the other girl and her dummy and was just about to take up her offer to partner with someone when Vera took out her wand, cast the spell, and the dummy's hair turned blue. That wasn't supposed to happen--was it? And Hope wasn't sure why, either--from what she'd seen and heard, the other girl had done everything right.

"Hmm...I guess Professor Carton didn't tell us how to put it back to normal again, either. Maybe he should have." Hope smiled at added, "I'm Hope Archard, I'd like to work with you if the offer is still open."

Charlie made his notes carefully, with regard to answers to the second round of questions and the notes on the board. Secretly, he did not like the sound of the spell that altered height and build. What if that one went horribly wrong for him? Char tried not to think of that as he shot Carton a smile in acknowledgement to the second spell. It came as relief to him that they’d be practicing on the dummies. At least for now.

Char selected a dummy and immediately got to work. “Ris-TAR-is. Ris-TAR-is. Next up was the spell he wanted to try the most, and the green mohawk he had spoken about earlier would be what his dummy would be sporting. “Crin-IS MU-to. Crin-IS MU-to. Crinis Muto. Crinis Muto.” The hairstyle was conjured in his mind now that practice was out of the way. Here went nothing…

No Fynn didn’t have anything worthwhile to add to the discussion and was much more content tapping his quill on his desk until the fun part started. Which thankfully he didn’t have to wait for too long before the Professor announced the practical element of the lesson.

He would’ve jumped on the opportunity to partner with Vera who he had got along with well in Diagon Alley but a younger student got there first and instead he offered her a nod and a smile. Maybe next time eh? No one else seemed to be offering up the opportunity to group up and so he grabbed his own dummy and started the activity on his own.

Truth be told, Fynn didn’t really see the need to want to change his appearance for he was quite happy with the way he looked already but he supposed it could be useful at some point if he ever decided to make an effort for fancy dress rather than just showing up in whatever he could muster up at the last minute. “Ris-Tar-Is” he repeated the first spell out loud to ensure he had the pronunciation correct. “Ristaris” he repeated again tapping the head of the dummy with his hand and watching as the hair colour transformed to the perfect Slytherin shade of green. He admired it with a satisfied grin on his face before realising how much of a dork he must’ve looked and clearing his throat.

It turned out that green mohawk was a little out of Charlie’s reach. “Crinis Muto.’’ Tap on the dummy’s hand with his wand… It actually took him three times to get it right. Luckily he didn’t give up or lose his focus easily. These were traits that came with playing U17 Quidditch. “Crinis Muto.’’ Another bout of intense focus and… success! Char stood back, grinning as he admired his work. Not bad. He did think that this particular style would look a lot better on him though.

Next up, was the final spell. “Tir-IN-um. Tir-IN-um.” Did the Puff still have misgivings about this spell? Uh huh. “Tirinum.” Two taps on the dummy’s head later yielded no change. Not even the slightest. And so Char continued, focusing on the dummy being taller with a perfectly proportional buff body. Four tries later, what he actually succeeded in doing was making the dummy three feet taller but it sported a buff torso and chicken legs.

Uh…

Even though Dennis was well aware of the existence of animagi in the wizarding world, it always took him by surprise when one of the professors chose to use that form instead of their human form at the start of the lesson. Which is why when Carton transformed back to his human self, the only thing his brain could think of to the first question was using an animagus form. Something that was already stated.

So he sat quietly until Carton continued, asking now about the advantages and disadvantages of changing one's physical characteristics. His thoughts went to the beginning of the year and while he hadn't used transfiguration for his facial hair, but a product, Dennis couldn't help but feel a disadvantage was unintended consequences.

Professor Carton introduced the spells and the fifth year couldn't help but feel anxious about the last one. The first two seemed okay... but could they maybe try them on a dummy instead? OH nevermind, that's exactly what they were to do. Dennis breathed a sigh of relief, as he made his way to one of the dummies that was free. "Ris-TAR-is," he recited.

From his place at the front of the room, Norman watched the students work. Bergstrand had made remarkable progress with the three spells already and received an approving nod. It looked like Ellis and Walles were moving along nicely too, and they likewise got a nod of approval.

His bluish-green eyes swept the room, monetarily landing on Thanatos and Archard. He saw the blue hair transformation but didn’t draw attention to it. While it may not have been intentional, it did technically satisfy the assignment requirements. He would, however, help the pair our with the counterspell. “If you make a mistake, the spell Reverte will put the dummy back to its original state,” he said to the group in general, and with a wave of his wand, that spell appeared on the board with the others.

“Keep up the good work! We’ll move on in about fifteen minutes.”

Brandon watched Professor Carton, more than a little unnerved. He didn't like how magic could do all these things! How was he supposed to trust anyone? He thought he could maybe recognize some of Professor Carton's mannerisms, but he wouldn't have known it was him if he hadn't just seen the transformation. It looked far less like him than his animagus form did. Brandon was glad for the professor to become the professor again.

He was equally glad that they weren't practicing on themselves right now. Although dummies with eyes disturbed him... he tried to focus on the lesson and not on that. Okay, first the eyes. Ristaris. He tapped the dummy on the head. "Ris... Ris-TAR-is!" The dummy's blue eyes turned hazel. Next, the hair. It had the same wand movement as ristaris, which could also change hair color, but this spell was better because it could do texture and other important hair things. Crin-IS MU-to. Crin-IS MU-to. Um. "Crinis muto." He tapped the dummy on the head again. Its short blond hair became thicker and a good deal longer. It was a shiny brown color. Okay, now for the height and build. He thought this was a very important element of disguise... though the others were important too. In Professor Carton's case, Brandon thought his eyes were his most recognizable feature, and therefore ristaris might be the most important. "Tir-IN-um. Tir-IN-um. Tir-IN-um." He practiced that incantation extra because he thought this spell would be the hardest. Even the wand movement was harder: two taps instead of one. He focused all of his concentration and energy into the two head taps. "Tirinum!" The dummy grew about five inches taller, and became thin.

Hm. While Brandon had done all his spellwork correctly, something bothered him about the way he made his dummy look. He looked at it for a while, and then realized that he had been keeping a particular person in mind to help him concentrate on the transformation and perfecting the spells, and... the dummy was a excellent representation of his sister. If she was a dummy. Brandon did NOT like that. Not that there was anything wrong with his sister's appearance, but dummies that looked like family members? No thanks! No thanks!!! It was weird!!! "Re-VER-te! Reverte!"

Hope turned to listen as the Professor gave the counterspell. Good--she liked to have a backup plan if things went wrong. But she wasn't sure if Vera wanted to leave the hair that way or not--it had been her spell, after all.

Instead, Hope turned to the dummy next to Vera's and tried a spell of her own. "Tirinum!" <tap - tap - tap> Hope didn't notice she'd tapped one time too many, until she watched her dummy shoot up to a towering height of about 15 feet! Oops...Good thing she'd listened to that reversal spell. "Reverte!" Oh well, she'd try again.

Hmm...what to try...well, between them, there was just one spell left untried. "Crinis Muto!" and she tapped the dummy's head. The dummy she'd chosen had dark, tight crinkly curls, but as soon as she'd cast the spell, the hair straightened out and grew long, down to the dummy's waist. "Hooray!" Hope said softly to herself, happy that she'd managed to do one right at last.

She never meant disrespect when she became engrossed with her little doodles and random musing on what was meant to be her notes and homework. Sometimes the margins were filled with ideas for her horoscope column in The Quill. It was not necessarily a reflection upon the professor nor the particular material of the lesson. It was simply her personality and the way in which her mind and thoughts could easily wander.

So, it was of no fault of Professor Carlton's that she entirely missed his introduction of the spells to be practiced during today's lesson and had everything to do with a couple of ink splatters on her parchment and how they bore an uncanny resemblance to a particular flower. Mitsuki had added several more faceless heads with horn and antler variations and was pausing to dip her quill into her inkwell once again when the Transfiguration professor reminded them of the counterspell should the need arise.

She supposed that she ought to perform some spellwork then before she was properly out of time. Not because she was lazy but rather she felt confident to begin her practice on herself, the fifth year swiveled in her seat so her feet were out from under the desk and quietly adjusted her grip on her wand. Considering the spells for a moment, she felt a kind of distant pang at the remembrance that the Metamorphmagus gene flowed in Rasting veins but none of it had manifested within herself. Nor had it with Eiji, which was one of the special links she felt with her older brother. Rebecca could do all this without the aid of a wand or incantation and grandpa had often turned some of his features into various creatures to appease them when they were infants and toddlers.

Sighing to herself, she reached up and ran her fingers through her remarkably straight and thick black hair for a moment before deciding what she would trial this particular spell with. "Crinis Muto," she spoke clearly and tapped the top of her head. Soon her long locks began to shrivel and curl as though they were being sucked back into her scalp, save for her modest micro bangs, and curled tighter and tighter until they formed sleek ringlets that sprung out from her head and completed her Dark ram look.

Fynley would’ve smiled in response to the approving nod from Professor Carton but he was in the process of trying to look ‘cool’ and smiling like a dork would’ve absolutely ruined that image. Besides, he had always enjoyed Transfiguration as a subject when it came to the practical aspect and wasn’t afraid to admit he was somewhat good at it. Perhaps if his sporting career didn’t take off he might be persuaded to do something in the subject. It would certainly make his parents proud.

..Not that he cared much about that right at this instance.

Moving on to the next spell he repeated the incantation slowly as he had the first. “Crin-IS MU-to” Sounded about right. Why spells had to be in Latin and not in simple language like ‘Change-us Hair-us’ was beyond him. It would make reading textbooks a lot easier for the boy. “Crinis Muto” he tapped the dummy’s head once again and the short silky hair transformed into a long curly mop.

No need to be intimidated by her. Older, younger, same age students - Ve didn't mind working with any of them. She just thought course work could sometimes be boring and was better done on groups. And even if the course work wasn't boring it was still done better with a partner because other people could make it even more fun. So Hope got a wide smile when she approached and asked if they could still work together. "Absolutely!" She noticed Fynn's smile as well and returned one his direction before attention reverted back to their dummy and the hair mishap. She must have been too focused on envisioning hair instead of the eyes. Or maybe it was the slight panic because of the eyes she was envisioning and she switched... Who knew.

Either way, good ole Carton was already giving the counter spell. Which was good to know though she wondered if they could just go ahead and change it using the proper for the day hair spell Crinus Muto.

Attention again fully on the dummy, when Hope changed it's height and it shot up into the air Ve jumped back with a giggle. "That was awesome!!" could she use this spell to turn herself into a giant?? Oh wouldn't THAT be fun! "I want to try too!" Taking her own wand and approaching the now normal sized practice dummy, she again stood up on tiptoes and gave two taps to the head. "[/B][/I]Tirinum![/I][/b]" The result wasn't as tall as she'd hoped, but it did seem to go up about half a foot. The width expansion was far more noticeable and again she gave a small giggle. "Not exactly what I was going for but.. it works!"

Ve watched as Hope changed the hair again on the dummy, smiling and nodding and shooting the girl a thumbs up. "That looks great! I'm going to try eyes again!" Considering that was now the only thing that had not actually been changed. Once more, she stood as tall as she could and reached out with her wand - tapping it's head 2 times whilst envisioning eyes a safer brown color. "Ristaris!" She was delighted to see when it was successful this time around. "I'd say we've made a good looking chap. Should we name him?"

While Char appreciated the encouraging nod from Carton, he could help but feel frustrated with himself about his failure of the final spell. Perhaps like how a horse senses fear, his mind was very aware of how wary he was of said spell. The Reversing Spell that Carton reminded them about made a question come to mind and the Puff raised his hand.

“Professor, would that spell reverse all the changes to the dummy? Or can it also work for reversing a partial change? Say, if I want to just reverse the height and build of my dummy.” Fingers crossed that it was the latter.

Norman continued monitoring the students’ progress from the front of the room. He saw Fox making quick progress with the three spells, and… was it just him or did the transfigured dummy look a lot like one of his former students? Never mind. “Nice work, Mr. Fox,” he said with a slight smile. It looked like Ellis was moving along quite nicely too. “You too, Mr. Ellis.”

Elsewhere he noticed that Rasting had elected to practice on herself instead of the dummies, and quite successfully too. “Excellent, Miss Rasting!”

Eyes scanning the room, he saw that with the help of the counterspell, Thanatos and Archard had now successfully transfigured their dummy. “Great job, girls!” he said, nodding approvingly. Another nod followed for Nam, who was still practicing Ristaris. “Nice pronunciation, Miss Nam.”

Bergstrand was doing quite well with the three spells as well, but before Norman could offer any words of encouragement, the boy asked a question. “It can be used for a partial reversion, yes,” he replied. “In that case, you’d want to aim at the dummy’s body, away from the hair and eye color changes you want to keep, and visualize only the height and build changing.” He hoped that helped!

Out of the corner of his eye, Norman noticed Beta-Erikson struggling with Ristaris and sidled over to help. “You’ve got the pronunciation and wand movement down,” he said encouragingly. Which meant it was most likely a problem with visualization or focus. “What exactly do you want the eyes to look like?” He knew from experience that sometimes describing one’s idea out loud could help with the visualization. “Picture that clearly in your mind as you cast.”



Returning to the front of the room, Norman glanced at his watch to see that the fifteen minutes were winding down. “Find a stopping place please!” He addressed the class, pausing for a few moments to allow time for the students to refocus their attention. “You’ll have more time to practice in a few minutes, but now it’s time to move on to the next activity.”

He wandered the room, passing out a folded slip of parchment to each student. “On these slips of parchment, you’ll find one of five monsters written: Vampire, Frankenstein, Phantom, Zombie, or Hyde. Your job is to transfigure the dummies into the monster on the parchment. You may continue working with the dummy you have, switch to a different one you feel better resembles your monster, or if you’re feeling confident, practice on yourself instead.”

Make sense so far? He paused, bluish-green eyes scanning the room for any signs of confusion. “The posters around the room are here to provide inspiration if you need it -” He knew not everybody in the class would’ve been familiar with the classic No Maj monster movies, and that was okay. “-but you do not have to copy them. Creative interpretation is encouraged… say you wanted to do a Mrs. Hyde, a short Frankenstein monster, a zombie with pink hair. As long as we can tell which monster it is, anything goes.”

"There are costumes and accessories in the trunk up front -” He gestured in that direction. “-to help you complete your monster look. You may use them on yourselves if you wish, but let’s take turns with any costume changes. No more than two people gone to the bathrooms at a time, and try to keep the stops to five minutes. You’ll have the rest of class to work, starting NOW!”

OOC: It’s main activity time! For this, your student needs to use a combination of Ristaris, Crinis Muto, and Tirinum to create one of the following monster looks: Vampire, Frankenstein (or Bride), Phantom, Hyde, or Zombie. You may pick which monster your student was assigned, but let’s try to have some variety [e.g. not half the class doing vampires]. Your student can keep their dummy, switch dummies, or practice on themself. Group/partner work is allowed.

If your student is practicing on themself and wishes to wear any costumes/accessories from the trunk, you DO NOT have to wait. You may headcanon that Carton excused your student from class. With his practice going well so far and after confirmation from Professor Carton that he was doing a good job, the Slytherin was feeling somewhat proud of himself. He wasn’t showing it on the outside however and his expression remained cool as a cucumber as he moved onto the final spell which would arguably make the biggest difference to the appearance of his dummy. He squinted in the direction of the board taking in the incantation and the once again simple wand movement which thankfully wouldn’t be too hard to remember. Only this time he was feeling a little too cocky and he didn’t bother practicing the incantation properly before diving head first into the spell. “Tirinium” he spoke adding an extra syllable and tapping the dummy’s head twice with the expectation that it would shrink to half its size..

But nothing happened.

He frowned a little trying to work out what exactly had gone wrong. If he hadn’t been focusing on the intended outcome surely the dummy would’ve still changed? His attention went back to the board where it took him a few moments to figure out the issue. See? THIS was why he hated that spells were always in this complicated language and never simple. He sighed, about to try again when the practice was temporarily paused so that everyone could move on.

There was absolutely no way that Fynley was going to make an attempt to change his own appearance in case it all went horribly wrong and he was to make a fool of himself. It didn’t matter if they were taught how to reverse it he was much more comfortable continuing on with his dummy and making that look like an idiot instead. Dressing up was just not his thing, as was previously mentioned his idea of a costume was finding something in his wardrobe and shoving it on last minute.

The fifth year took the piece of parchment from the Professor and quickly opened it to reveal ‘FRANKENSTEIN’S MONSTER’ scrawled inside. It was easy enough to make it look obvious he supposed although they hadn’t actually been taught how to make the ‘skin’ turn green. Turning back to the dummy, the Slytherin started off with the spell he had failed to master first. “Tir-in-UM” he pronounced carefully this time tapping twice on the dummy’s head and watching it grow to seven foot tall and thinner to lay into Frankenstein’s Monster’s gaunt and imposing appearance.

No need for partners, in Remy’s opinion. She had spent a short amount of time practising the spells on the dummies, hardly Crinis Muto, as she had mastered that one previous to this lesson. The other two needed a little more practise just to avoid any embarrassment.

Tiri…” Remy began, needing to look back at the blackboard for reassurance that she was saying it properly. “Tirinum.” With a wand flick, Remy’s wand tapped the dummy’s head twice and watched as its height and build change before her eyes. Her head tilted as it wasn’t exactly how she wanted it to turn out, in fact it barely shrunk two inches, but it HAD changed so it was still a success in her eyes. She would just pretend that it was correct.

Onto the main activity… again, Remy wanted to work alone. But she also wanted to perform the spells on herself, as a desperate attempt to impress the professor. She picked a piece of parchment and read the word Zombie written in it. Perfect.

Eager to get started, the Gryffindor decided to find the right clothing after her spell work, although she was tempted to use the clothes changing spell that she had mentioned at the beginning of the lesson. She readied her wand and pointed it to her hair, starting with the incantation that she knew already, “Crinis Muto.” Tap. Her hair didn’t change massively, but enough to convey the desired look. From blonde to a pale gray. She popped down her wand a second to use both hands to ruffle up her roots. Zombies didn’t have the perfect hair style that Remy always had, did they?!!!! Now, onto the next spell.

Alfie thought that all of the spells they were learning sounded pretty cool. Changing eye color, hair color, and height and weight could all be fun and useful. Changing height and weight seemed particularly interesting because it would be the most dramatic transformation, and something that couldn't easily be accomplished by non-magical means. When they were set free he hurried over to a dummy, eager to practice.

He decided to try them in the order they were written on the board. That meant ristaris was first, for changing eye color. He tapped the head of the dummy and said "Ristaris." The dummy's solid dark eyes changed to a slightly lighter blue. That one hadn't been so hard. He tapped the head again, this time saying "Crinis Muto." This time he pictured the dummy sprouting a green mohawk. It didn't go quite according to plan, but not far off. The dummy was now sporting spiky green hair. So the coloring had worked as planned, but the hairstyle was not exactly what he had been picturing. He decided to try the last spell. He could go back and practice this one more later.

The dummy was roughly the same size as Alfie himself, if not slightly shorter. He tapped his wand on the dummy's head twice and said "Tirinium." Immediately, it grew about a head taller than Alfie. He was hoping for it to get even taller, but he was still pretty pleased with the results. This spell did seem like it would be the hardest of the three, because it was the most dramatic change. He was also pretty sure that it would be harder to do on a person than on a dummy, so he should probably practice more before it was time to practice it on themselves. That was, if they were going to be performing the spells on themselves. He hoped so. That would be fun.

Alfie moved to where Lisa was practicing on a dummy a few feet away. He nudged her with his elbow. He lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Already planning all the pranks you could pull with these spells?" He grinned at her, and raised his voice to a normal volume. "Want to work together?"

Mitsuki took a moment to lightly touch the rounded curly bob hair style she had given herself. She could not see herself for visual confirmation and, despite the professor's praise, was certain that it was not a style that suited her. Really, these particular curls engulfed her head and it was only because she had made her horns large before arriving in class that they were even visible now. Perhaps she ought to change her hair color to draw a better distinction between the horns, her hair, and the blue roses. Listening, half listening really, to the professor as instructions were given, the fifth year's attention waxed and waned among the details and thus she selectively heard something about drawing inspiration from the posters to complete their looks - not so much about how they were meant to transform the dummies or themselves into one of the figures present. Her slip of parchment bore the word 'Frankenstein' upon it and when she looked up her hazel green eyes fell on the poster of the Bride of Frankenstein and the striking white streak in her hair. Well, inspiration was had and with another flourish and tap of her wand upon her head, Mitsuki spoke the incantation, "Ristaris."

Her eyes turned milky white and cloudy, though her own vision remained as it had always been, until it appeared as though she had only whites for eyes. There was a faint almost dark lilac circle to be seen, indicating her irises, if anyone cared to gaze into her eyes long enough to notice. Her hair as well began to fade, the raven black curls turning a dark slate grey and then silver and then a snowy white as the transfiguration completed itself. Now her black horns and blue rose adornments would be more prominent. With two of the three spells meant to be utilized ticked off, Mitsuki took a moment to consider her options for the third. Already a slender and petit build, she concluded that it would perhaps be beneficial to lengthen her legs to resemble those of a satyr.

Standing now, Mitsuki took a couple of steps away from her desk to provide herself with amble room and tapped her head twice. "Tirinum," she spoke clearly. It tickled at first and soon there was a rather unpleasant stretching sensation in her shins as her legs seemed to grow from her heavy boots - not to mention a ripping sound as her knee socked stretched beyond their limit and tore the lace trim right off so she appeared to have little knee garters and the remaining black nylon silk bunched up around her ankles. Still not nearly as tall as Professor DeVires, Mitsuki had nonetheless grown at least half a foot from her original height. Her knee sock situation was unfortunate, but not as unfortunate as the suddenly feeling of vertigo that came over her from the intense growth spurt. She felt dizzy and when the Ravenclaw closed her eyes to try and center herself, she also took an accidental small sidestep which would be her downfall - quite literally.

Her balance completely compromised, Mitsuki became at the mercy of gravity and tumbled over sideways and directly into one of her classmates.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Although Daniel did not return Alfie's greeting with a smile, he did nod his head and curiously turned around to see where he was going to sit. Because it was clear earlier that he was torn between sitting in front with him or in the back with Charlie. The Hufflepuff was relieved that he had chosen Charlie because it meant he didn't have to socialize before class.

Daniel remained silent throughout the lesson, writing in his notebook as the Professor spoke. When a demonstration was shown, he looked up from his writing and noticed that the professor's eye color had changed. Although it took a few seconds for him to realize this.

He scribbled down the last of his notes and closed his notebook before he walked to the back of the room. He was already comfortable with the Ristaris spell, having used it twice on himself, but he needed to practice the other spells. He practiced these two spells on a dummy until the Professor stopped them.

He turned the slip of parchment that had been handed to him around to read what was written. Vampire. His dark brown eyes shifted to the poster of Dracula, and he scratched his brow before walking over to the accessories trunk. He rummaged around inside the trunk when it was his turn. What exactly did vampires wear? Would he prefer an old-fashioned vampire or something more modern? He wished he knew a vampire so he could imitate their fashion sense because this was harder than he had thought. Perhaps the safest option was to re-create the monster on the poster. But that would be boring, right? First, the Hufflepuff took out a handful of random accessories such as rings and necklaces and a cape before he walked back to his dummy.
