Default Transfiguration Lesson 1: TBA

It’s a crisp sunny Autumn afternoon on the grounds, a little cool but not cold enough to be uncomfortable. Hopefully you’ve remembered to dress comfortably for today’s transfiguration lesson! As you make your way down the path, you find Professor Carton standing beside a chalkboard, but it’s the object behind him that is bound to draw attention.

A towering hedge maze covered in vines looms behind the professor. Not to worry, these aren’t the same vines from last term! What is the purpose of the maze? Only time will tell! For now, Professor Carton greets the arriving students, “Hello! Please stand in a semicircle and wait for the lesson to begin. Don’t go near the maze yet!”

OOC: Welcome to the first OOC transfiguration lesson of term 60! Remember that this is not the first IC lesson your characters would’ve had with Carton this term. If you haven’t already done so, please familiarize yourself with the class rules. We’ll begin in ABOUT 24 HOURS HAS STARTED!

Lesson Progression:

Question 2
Incarcolvo & Mini Activity
Vinea Funiculus & Main Activity

That seemed useful to staying alive or comfortable in many different environments.

Norman had to admit he was slightly surprised that conjuration was the first answer given. He knew it would come up eventually, but he expected most people’s minds would go to transformation first. Not that it was the bad kind of surprise - far from it! Kynaston’s examples were right on the money. “Correct, Mr. Kynaston,” he said with a slight smile. “Fire conjuration can come in handy for that purpose and many others.”

Only thing he did miraculously though was correct her on his name. She was saved by the bell?

Baffled and not sure what to do Bella still apologized since it was the right thing to do. "I'm sorry Professor Carton. I really meant no disrespect. It won't happen again." Could she get away with slipping down under her desk for the rest of the class? This would reach the rumor mill in no time. Feeling self- conscious now Bella still raised her hand to give an answer in a clear but small voice. "You can use the water making spell aguamenti if you are in the wilderness and don't have any clean water to drink."

Norman still had no idea how Connolly could’ve gotten his name so badly wrong, but he wasn’t angry about it. She didn’t strike him as the type for disrespect or disruption. He nodded in acceptance of her apology. “I should hope it won’t,” he said. With that little blunder behind them, he turned his attention to her answer to the question. Another conjuration spell. That branch of transfiguration was proving to be more popular than he thought! “An excellent use of that spell indeed. Thank you, Miss Connolly.”

Jude grinned up at Carton, thrilled that his answer stood out. “Thanks, professor.’’ Not that there weren’t far more fascinating replies from some of his classmates. He was impressed in fact. But how could humans adapt to their environs using Transfiguration? The Hufflepuff thought. Stuart was right - Conjuration was one way. “If you find yourself in a situation where you find yourself falling from a great height, one of the quickest Transfiguration spells to use is the Softening Charm. The ground below can be changed into something suitable for landing without damage to yourself.”

Norman acknowledged Anders’s thanks with a nod and a slight smile of his own - a smile that remained in place as he listened to the boy’s answer to the next question. The creativity of these kids never ceased to amaze him! “Excellent, Mr. Anders,” he said. “That would be a very practical use of the Softening Charm.”

Though he didn't know what the spell was, and he was secretly hoping the Professor would offer that.

Norman knew it was only a matter of time before someone brought up human to animal transformations. He was pleased with Nam’s eloquent and thorough example of the subject. “Ah, yes, Squalofors - that’s the spell Krum would’ve used,” he said with an approving nod, but he digressed. “Excellent example, Mr. Nam. Human transfiguration can come in handy, though if one is alone, it’s best to stick with an incomplete transformation like Krum’s so you’ll still be able to untransifgure yourself.”

Blink, blink. Did she not hear him say almost that exact thing moments before he asked the question? Norman was unsure whether Valentine was not paying attention or just confused. Probably the latter, considering she was one of the younger students. “Yes, Miss Valentine,” he replied. “Do you have any ideas how transfiguration can change the environment around you? What could you turn yourself or that maze into that would make it easier to get through?” Maybe if he worded the question a different way, it would click with her.

She finally raised her hand. "I'm guessing there's maybe some spell that can help us camouflage ourselves in that maze? Or maybe grow taller than the maze to see our way through?" she suggested. She had a feeling they were going in that maze, like it or not, so she assumed whatever was coming next would relate to it.

Norman nodded in approval at Prescott’s answer. “You’ve guessed correctly on both counts. Very good, Miss Prescott,” he replied.

This was the sort of question Bonnie had been dreading. Having lived a normal muggle life until now she had no experience of magical transformations. Thinking about the environment around her, what about something to do with the weather? Once again raising her hand, 'Professor, can witches and wizards use transfiguration to help deal with severe weather conditions. For example to help them get around in very deep snow?' She hoped it wasn't too obvious this was a clueless guess.

Had Norman known what Ness was thinking, he would've assured her that there was nothing to dread. Her answer was on the right track. ”They certainly can,” he replied with a small smile. “In fact, there are multiple ways to do that. You could transfigure something into snowshoes to help you walk through the snow. You could give yourself the legs of a creature better equipped to walk through snow, or you could vanish the snow so nobody has to walk through it at all. Very good, Miss Ness.”

"Oh! What if you just like... made everything tiny? Like made the maze so tiny that you could just step over it like it was a pile of leaves? If that was something I was dealing with and I knew how to do any spells and I had my wand on me at the time, I would just... zap it all tiny tiny."

Branxton’s answer earned a slight smile from the professor. Now that was a creative solution! “Good idea, Mr. Branxton,” he said. “There are two ways you could go about doing that. You could use a Shrinking Charm to make the maze smaller, or you could transfigure it into another tiny object entirely.”

Norman caught Hazelwood’s smile out of the corner of his eye but did not draw attention to it. Still it was nice to see the boy a little more at ease! His answer to the second question earned a small approving nod from the professor. “Very good, Mr. Hazelwood,” he replied. “You certainly could, though there are a couple of safety rules to keep in mind with human transfiguration. Unless you’re an animagus, metamorphmagus, or skilled in wandless magic, always have a partner with you when attempting full transformations so they can untransfigure you. If you’re alone, you should stick with incomplete transformations.”

Which was the exact same sentiment he offered to this professor. "Sure! He tended to forget these excitements quickly, especially when he had several going on at once and physical reminds of others in his pockets.

Hands clasped together, a visual reminder that he was holding a thought, Atlas waited for class to continue and honestly felt a little puff of pride. Little mental pat on the back to himself for having a useful little musing, though since he had already offered his analysis and offer of human transfiguration by way of modifying the bum to have a tail...the Gryffindor felt he had already contributed to this follow up question thoroughly.

So, the fourth year was just going to keep quiet and look entirely too proud of himself for a couple of moments before getting distracted by a leaf blowing about on the ground. Whooooooosh to the left. Whooooooosh to the right. Whooooooooosh corkscrew spinning.

Oh wait. No. There was a thought.

"Professor!" he gasped as the thought came to him, hand shooting up to follow protocol and all. "Magic always leaves traces, right? So if human transfiguration leaves its traces somehow...and it is a means of cheating evolution...does that mean that performing magical modifications on the human body could theoretically be harmful to our evolution as a species?"

And she wasn't planning to answer this question - as a protest, but when Atlas asked his question, Kinsay raised her hand without thinking. "For it to affect everyone's evolution, wouldn't it have to be more than just a few random people doing it? Are there even enough wizards for that to be possible?" And also. "Can you change your genes with magic if you really wanted to?" This one wasn't directly related to Atlas' question, but the thought came to mind and now she needed to know.

So.

Well, that was an interesting question Flamsteed posed! Norman pondered that thought for a moment, carefully considering the possible effects of human transfiguration on evolution. He’d never heard of transfiguration negatively impacting evolution, though that sounded like a great subject for an experiment. Filing that idea away for now, he replied, “Generally speaking, no. Our bodies have adapted to handle the traces left by most types of magic, including transfiguration. I’d think the only exception to that would be dark magic. Excellent question, Mr. Flamsteed.”

Yes, he knew how incessant James could be after teaching her for three years… which was why he was shocked that she didn’t argue with him about the maze. He was even more shocked when she added her thoughts to Flamsteed’s evolution question. “Valid points on both counts, Miss James,” he said with an approving smile. “And no, you can’t change genes with magic. Transfiguration, for example, changes things on a molecular level, not a genetic one.”

As they moved on, Milo's ears pricked up at an answer provided by a... someone else, somewhere here. Evanesco. Where do Vanished objects go? Non-being. Nowhere and everywhere. Nothing and everything. If he was Vanished, he would become a part of the environment, making the most of it while being lost to it. Everything and nothing. Dead and alive, until such time he was re-conjured, and the status of his existence assured. Schrödinger's Milo.

Suddenly, Milo, whose mind had quite clearly been wandering far from the topic of discussion these last few minutes, returned to it with a query for Mr Carton. One that could have waited, yes, but which he preferred to propose now, quite neglecting to raise his hand. "Will you Vanish someone and see if it's possible to retrieve them?" He volunteered one of the Hufflepuffs. If (as was Milo's theory) it didn't work, not only would his curiosity be temporarily sated, but it would be one less Hufflepuff to worry about. "Maybe you would have to transfigure them first."

Evans’s question had Norman concerned for three reasons. 1. The boy had forgotten to raise his hand before speaking. 2. The question was completely unrelated to the topic at hand. 3. Most importantly, the boy had just asked him to vanish someone. Yeah, that was not happening! He could only imagine the parents’ and the Board’s reactions to a mad transfiguration professor vanishing students. “Not today, Mr. Evans,” he said firmly. “Please try to stay on task and remember to raise your hand before speaking.” That was the only warning the boy would get.

Yukie liked flowing conversations, although it was a bit hard to keep track when there were so many already.

Vanishing. Magic leaving traces. Evolution. A whole topic parkour in her brain! Trying to stay with the first question though, Yukie raised her hand. She must answer before she got lost in her thoughts again. "You can transfigure your surroundings or yourself to reach tall things like trees. Very helpful for small ones like me," she said. "Oh and, professor, metamorphmaguses.... uhm.... metamorphmagi have an advantage with that, yeah? They can make their necks extra long like a giraffe's!" Yukie just had to bring into the topic, because she knew some metamorphma-plural forms in her life.

Rasting’s answer got a small smile from Norman. “That would be quite helpful indeed,” he replied, nodding in agreement. Not that he’d know from personal experience, It had been many years since he was small enough to need transfiguration to reach tall objects! That answer was satisfactory on its own, but then the girl tied metamorphmaguses in. That was a subject he didn’t expect to come up! “Yes, I suppose they would. Very good, Miss Rasting.”

Now this subject was one with which Norman did have personal experience. Nichol’s answer earned a small smile. “Theoretically yes, though that would depend upon which form one’s animagus takes and the environment in question,” he said. “Good thinking, Miss Nichols.”

Norman was unsure whether or not Bixby’s touching the maze was intentional, but nonetheless it earned her a quick warning look. But it didn’t last. That look quickly softened into an approving smile at her answer. “Thank you, Miss Bixby,” he replied. “That’s correct.”

But aaaanyways. How DID humans manage to survive in environments they weren't originally supposed to survive? Her first thought was broomsticks with flying, but that wasn't transfiguration. That was more charms, right? So Arden had to triple think about how Transfiguration was involved. That was when an older Ravenclaw [Stewie] mentioned conjuring. Arden totally forgot how conjuring was considered Transfiguration, and her brain, for the LIFE of her, could not remember anything they had talked about in the past. And soooOoooo she flipped to the beginning of her notes to reread anything she had written in the past and completely managed to forget she was in CLASS.

Welp.

She was completeeeeely absorbed in her notes and did NOT answer the current question. Whoooooops.

These were always interesting to see what people thought and how the lesson would progress. It was something that interested her, she was far too deep in her thoughts on ranking the ways they could transfigure to give her own answer.

While scanning the room for more hands in the air, Norman’s eyes momentarily lingered on Toros and then Rivers. He waited a moment, in case either girl decided to speak up, but they both appeared absorbed in their notes. That was fine too. As long as they were paying attention, no speaking was required.

Seeing no more hands in the air, Norman addressed the class once more. “Excellent answers, everyone! While there are many ways in which transfiguration can help us adapt to our environment, today we’re going to focus on two spells which will help you in the maze’s environment specifically. The first is a form of conjuration, but to demonstrate this spell, we’ll need a target…” Or targets, in this case.

With a flick of his wand, a line of wooden animal figures appeared in front of the maze. Their sizes ranged from as small as a rabbit to as large as an abraxan. After pausing to allow time for the students to focus, he continued, “Incarcolvo, the net-conjuring spell, is most commonly used for animal capture, though it can be used to ensnare objects as well. To cast, visualize a net large enough to cover your target, jab your wand in the intended target’s direction, and say, In-car-SOL-vo.”

“Incarcolvo!” he said, jabbing his wand toward the wooden abraxan, and a net appeared around the figure. “Incarcolvo… Incarcolvo…” He went on down the line until all the animal figures, including the rabbit at the far end, were covered in nets. Then with another wave of his wand, all of the nets vanished.

“Your task is simple. Practice the net-conjuring spell using these wooden figures for the next fifteen minutes. Don’t worry if your aim is off. The important thing is the actual conjuration. If you need help, raise your hand. Spell information is on the chalkboard…” With a wave of his wand, the following information appeared on the board:

Quote:
Incarcolvo
Pronunciation: In-car-SOL-vo
Wand movement: jab in target’s direction
Use: conjures net
“You may begin - and please try not to ensnare other students!” That should be self-explanatory, but one never knew with some of these kids!

OOC: Mini activity time! For this, your character needs to practice the net-conjuring spell on the wooden animal figures the professor has provided. The smallest figure is a rabbit; the largest is an abraxan. Other than those two, you’re free to make up which animal figures are there; you may also decide the outcomes of your spells. You may work solo or with a partner/group, but everybody must attempt the spell. You’ll have 48-60 HOURS for this activity!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jude was feeling awfully pleased with his answers today. Maybe some of that confidence would trickle down into his spellwork. Speaking of which… it was with fascination that he watched the wooden animals when they appeared. The Hufflepuff thought that this particular spell was a mighty handy one to know. Carton made the entire process of ‘capturing’ the animals seem so effortless. Gosh.

“If you need help, let me know, Bells,’’ Jude remarked. Though he couldn’t exactly promise to actually be much of a help outside of offering encouragement. Transfiguration was exactly a subject he particularly excelled in. “In-car-SOL-vo. In-car-SOL-vo! Incarcolvo!” Jab! Jab! Jab!

The practicing was always the easy bit.

Lisa had shot a secretive smile back to Atlas. Heh. She was about to reply but Daniel and Remy caught her eye. Now she was rather curious by their dynamic… She never knew Remy and Daniel were friends. She turned her attention away from them just in time to miss the second question. She stayed quiet, listening to her peers’ answers. Of course, Stewie had an impressive answer. She offered him a smile. Proud of her meddler-in-crime.

The lesson moved on and she listened to Professor Carton discuss the spell they’d be using. Incarcolvo. She brought her notebook out and jotted down the wand movement and purpose of the spell. So first, she had to practice the pronunciation. “In-car-SOLE-vo…” That didn’t sound quite right. “In-car-SOL-vo” That sounded better. She repeated the pronunciation until she felt confident.

Right. Pronunciation done.

Next was the wand movement. The movement seemed simple enough. Jabbing into the target’s direction.

She turned to Atlas beside her and she took a deep breath to calm her blushing cheeks. “Wanna work together?

Arden looked up from her notes as Carton moved class forward only to furrow her eyebrows in a judgmental way. A net spell that was used to catch animals?! She didn't know how she felt about that. But like, Arden supposed catching animals wasn't always about killing them, right? Sometimes, it was for their own good. SO she pushed aside her discomfort and grabbed her wand before turning to look at the wooden dummies.

SO she had to...practice on those.

"In..car...solvo..." she said to herself, making sure the word felt comfortable in her mouth before turning to look at her seat-mate, Maxine. "Wanna' see who can conjure a net quicker? And the winner gets nothing?" Because sometimes just winning was fun enough.

Forget all about shrinking things! Mercer was ABSOLUTELY smitten by the wooden animals, and he completely forgot himself in the moment. Forgot he had a wand, and an assignment, and any sense of decorum, and threw himself after scrabbling for the wooden rabbit.

"I just want to pet it!" Mercer was playing nine pins with his body, and other people and animals were the pins. He went tumbling, and only once he was in a forest of legs did he remember what he was about. Right. Dignity. CLASS. Ravenclaw. "In...carcey..." Oh, darn. He forgot it. And his wand was missing. And his knee was bleeding.

Oh? So she was right? On both accounts? Awesome! Wild guesses for the win! At first, she thought he might be asking for a student target, and she kind of slouched down a little so as not to be seen. Nope. Not her. She peeked forward as a lineup of wooden animals spread out before them. Okay, then. Much better than student targets. One by one, the professor got 'em all, and pretty soon, they were all covered in nets.

Goals.

She had just torn her eyes away from the last wooden animal, when BAM, the activity started. That had escalated quickly. She fumbled for wand and held it forward. Aww. No ensnaring other students? What was the fun in that? "Incarcolvo!" she said, making no attempt at wand waving. Incantation first. Words later. "Incarcolvo!"

Were the wooden animals reminding anyone else of certain horses from ancient Greece? No, just her? Okay, then.

Dia thought this spell could provide.....interesting uses. Like trapping annoying people before they could get close. But, as if he'd read her mind, Professor Carton warned them against using it on each other. Well, *mental raspberry*. Why practice on something that couldn't get away? Anyway, she tried out the pronunciation of the spell first. "In-car-SOL-vo. Incarcolvo." Easy enough, it sounded like the word incarcerate.

Once she was sure she had the pronunciation down, she aimed at one of the wooden animals and cast. "Incarcolvo!" *Jab* The little wooden animal was only draped in netting (like a cape), not ensnared in it, unfortunately. Time to try again.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

This entire practice of jabbing the wand made Jude feel as though he were in a fencing match. Not that he had ever participated in such a thing but it certainly felt that way. With his practice over now, a crup as his target. Was he in a good frame of mind now? Not really, Jude was nervous about this spellcasting. What was mentioned about Transfiguration not being his best was certainly true.

“Incarcolvo!” Cue that jab in the wooden crup’s direction! He might as well have been still practicing because not a single piece of web was conjured from his wand. Not even the tiniest of strings. This came as no surprise to him. He ran his fingers through his dark brown hair. There was no giving up for him yet since Ryder Jude Anders was always full of determination to do better.

That determination was still there, when the Hufflepuff was on his fifth unsuccessful try.

When Professor Carton did provide the name for the spell Krum had used, he scribbled it on the edge of his parchment to look more into later. Did he have any plans of using said spell? Absolutely not, though it certainly would have come in handy last year when he and Kinsay wanted to go searching for Sir Henry. It was just a nice spell to know, and who knew? Maybe it'd show up later on his exams.

He took more notes on the spell they were to be using for the day, taking special note of the pronunciation and movement. When they were released to practice, he considered trying to trap the largest of the creatures at first but the Abraxan looked a little too large for his comfort level. So.. better to not.

So instead he made his way towards a rabbit sized, leaving his papers and merely clutching his wand in his hand. A job and the incantation. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Or so he thought, though his first two attempts produced nothing. "In-car-SOL-vo!" Attempt number three at least produced a net, but he couldn't even tell if it was the correct size considering how far off the money he was from actually getting the rabbit. The fifth year frowned a bit, before trying again this time giving better aim. "In-car-SOL-vo!" The net seemed a little too small still but... at least this time it hit the wood. He decided to go ahead and move to a different size up.

Violet was having good success in casting the spell--her nets were the right size and well-made. Her aim, though, was another matter--after much practice, she was still hitting her targets only about 60% of the time. She decided to concentrate on the figures on the medium-large side of the sizes, to better her chances of at least hitting part of them. "Incarsolvo!" she cried, jabbing her wand at a figure that looked something like a deer. The net went over its back and backside, but the head was still peeking out. Bother, Violet thought to herself, and gathered her energies to try again. All this while, she couldn't help thinking to herself that if the professor had warned them to try not to hit any students, that this was a spell that could be used on a person as well--only if absolutely necessary, though.

The look at Maxine’s face combined with NOTHING happening definitely made Arden laugh into her hands. Not at all maliciously, or meanly, but in a good-natured kind of way. It was funny. “That’s okay. Magic is still new to all of us,” she said with a shrug, as if to fool herself as well as Maxine into thinking it tooootally wasn’t a big deal even if Arden knew that if she didn’t get it herself, she’d ALSO feel silly and probably blush.

Taking a deep breath, she jabbed her wand at the nearest wooden figure and said, clearly, “Incarcolvo!” And her wand it up, like it WANTED to work, but no ropes appeared.

Well.

How rude.

She tapped her wand a little on her hand and huffed. “Come on, spidey,” she said softly to it. This week, she had named her wand Spidey. It was mostly because she often forgot what she named things so she just switched out names for her wand. Problem solved. “Well. I guess I failed too,” she giggled a little.

Charlie grabbed her wand and watched with rapt attention to see what they were doing. Oh why hadn't she thought of this. Her mom was often doing this at dig sites they were at because small animals were getting into the way. She took a deep breath, watching a few more of the other students try to get their net to catch one of the wooden animals.

Inhaling and exhaling she loosened her grip on her wand before trying once verbally to make sure she knew what she was doing, "In-car-SOL-vo!" Jabbing her wand toward the wooden target she pictured a net that would easily wrap itself around the animal. Inhaling again she watched as a net wobbled out of her wand and half heartedly landed on the animal.

Well at least it made a net. Now she just needed the net to have a bit more authority so it would do exactly what she wanted it to do.

Huh. This is not what he was expecting, but hey it still looks entertaining. Hopefully he doesn't have to use to on an animal anyway. Sirius turned to Ash. "Do you want to pair up?" or maybe she wanted to do this on her own, that's fine. He's fine. Please want to pair up!

He looked over at the obstacles unconfidently. He wasn't so sure about this.

Atlas still wasn't entiiiiiiiiiiirely sold on there not being any long term impact on wizarding kind 'cheating' evolution - though that did not necessarily mean a negative one. In fact, the professor had proved the point he hadn't entirely been meaning to make with his response anyway...in that their bodies had adapted to handle magical traces. He did know dad had become even more obsessed with sterilization since he began working at the Ministry of Magic so..he felt there was some sort of connection to be had there. In any case, Atlas was rather content with the combined responses from Kinsay James and the professor. No follow ups required at this time.

However, there WERE some questions when spell number one was revealed. In talking about adaptations and such, Atlas had not been expecting a spell that was neither an adaption or a modification to either themselves or the hedges and surrounding nature. It was...conjuration? Adding something unrelated to the environment and well... hmm, curious.

He would rather have learned how to give himself a tail.

Staring ahead at the wooden figures and half reminded of the metal creatures at home, Atlas turned his head when he heard Lisa speak to him. "Sure," he smiled. She did mean in practicing the spell right now, right? They were going to try and trap each other in a net? He may have only been half paying attention during parts of the instruction as his thoughts carried him elsewhere. "Bet you can't catch me though," he smirked with a little wink and then broke off from the semicircle at a light jog away from her.

Okay, enough of just saying Incarcolvo over and over again. It was time to put a little wand to those words. Delilah gave her wand a good, steady grip. She pointed it in the direction of one of the wooden animals. What was that thing? Oh, it was the rabbit! Okay, then. Take this, rabbit!

Delilah jabbed her wand forward. "Incarcolvo!" There was something similar to a net that shot from her wand, but just as soon as it tried to form, it dissipated. Well, then. Just kidding, rabbit. If it could laugh at her, it probably would right about now. PFFT. She decided to get a little more practice in, so for the next few minutes, she called out the incantation and did the wand movements separately. Maybe it was her...what did they call it...intent?

Or something.

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina noted down the spell on her parchment first. She felt pretty confident when it came to transfiguration spells these days.. at least, she didn't take about five tries to get it right anymore.

Incarcolvo. She said it aloud a couple of times first before reaching for her wand, looking at some of the wooden figures. Not wanting to practice on any of the larger ones first, like the abraxan, the blonde pointed her wand at the rabbit first.

"In-car-SOL-vo!" Visualizing a large net, she jabbed her wand in the direction of the little wooden figure aaaaaaaand nothing. BLINK. She tried again, with a little more focus this time and she watched as the net appeared. Ah, perfect. Moving on to another size.

Stuart was actually really pleased that this lesson was on conjuring. He liked it. It felt like the most magical for of magic. Things appearing out of thin air. Was there anything cooler??

He repeated the spell to himself several times. "In-car-SOL-vo. In...car...SOL... vo" Once he felt he got it, he jabbed his wand toward one of the bigger animals (better chance of actually hitting the target and all).

"Incarcolvo!" he said making a jabbing motion. And sure enough THERE was a net. That successfully landed on an antler. Tah-dah. Magic.

The Hufflepuff could not help but feel slightly envious of those who produced a net whether it be partially or fully. By now, he had taken a break to eye his classmates. There were some struggling, of course, and this fact sort of aided in lifting his morale. That was why he went back to work soon after. “Incarcolvo!”

This time though… this time.

Jude had really taken his time to picture that net springing up on the target. Heck, he probably focused more than he ever did before. An incantation and a jab later, the crup was encased in a mighty fine net.

Finally.

Summer listened to the Professor, okay she was so confused about the question he asked so instead she just listened patiently to him, waiting to see what they were doing next.

Summer smiled when it got down to the practical thing, she was about to sigh, when the Professor said what the wand movement and the incantation was, she started to practice the wand movement first.

After awhile she started to practice the incantation. "In-car-SaOL-voe!" Summer listened to herself, nope that wasn't right. "In-car-SOLa-vo!" Summer sighed, this was harder than it looked, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. " In-car-SOL-vo!" Summer smiled when she opened them, the only issue was she couldn't close her eyes when she did the spell right.

Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

'If you need help let me know Bells!' She heard Jude remark after Professor Carton had demonstarted the spell that conjured nets around a target wooden animal. It looked so easy when their professor did it. Bella had a feeling that it wouldn't be super easy at all. Out of the corner of her mouth she mouthed back to Jude as she took out her wand from her holster. "Likewise Judes! Those nets look tricky to conjure."

"In-car-Sol-Vo! In-Car-Sol-Vo! Incarcolvo!" Bella practiced the incantation dilligently like the peers she heard around her. She practiced the incantation so many times that she began to say the words in the wrong order. Maybe it was time to practice the jab motion instead? Taking a few steps away as a safety precaution from Jude to not accidentally knock him in the face Bella began to practice jabbing at the air imagining an opponent.

Several minutes later Bella had gathered enough courage to try the new spell out on a wooden figurine. Choosing a small rabbit out of the smaller ones she jabbed her wand forward imagining how thet net fell around the rabbit as she casted with firmness, but sneezed suddenly at the end. "Incarcol....chooooovo!" The spell was a miss. Only the rabbits head showed any sign of a net.

Wiping a quick finger under her nose so she didnt sneeze again, Bella gave the the spell a new try.

Default Main Activyt starts here!
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

SPOILER!!: mini activity responses
Norman roamed the area, walking behind the students as they worked so as not to wander into the path of their spells. Toros and Bixby’s little competition got a small smile from him. Although neither girl had yet produced a net, they were on the right track. “Keep practicing, girls!’ he said.

Elsewhere he saw Hazelwood asking Fox to team up, and the younger Nam and Flamsteed had partnered up too. Nam’s pronunciation and wand work earned an approving nod, though Flamsteed’s jogging got a slight eyebrow raise. Why was he-? Oh. “You shouldn’t be catching anyone,” he reminded the pair. Did they forget that he said not to ensnare other students?

As he made his rounds, Norman saw several students making great progress at the spell. Kynaston, Nichols, and Wolff had each hit a target. “Good work, Kynaston, Nichols, Wolff,” he said, giving each of the three an encouraging smile. Elsewhere he saw Blackthorne succeed in producing nets, if not in aim. “Nice conjuration, Miss Blackthorne,” he said before moving on.

Rivers’s net looked a little wobbly, but the important thing was that she’d produced one. “Great start, Miss Rivers,” Norman said with a slight smile. Connolly also appeared to be on the right track. Had she not sneezed mid-spell, he expected she would’ve fully ensnared that rabbit. “Bless you, Miss Connolly,” he said. “Keep at it!”

Norman watched as Anders and the elder Nam tried and eventually hit their targets. ‘I like your perseverance, Mr. Anders,” he said. “You too, Mr. Nam.” Even the younger students were making great progress. Prescott’s efforts earned an approving smile. A little more intent behind the spell, and she’d have it in no time! “Good start, Miss Prescott,” he said. “All your spell needs is a bit more intent.”

Elsewhere he heard Valentine stumbling through the pronunciation, but before he could step in to correct her, she got it right on her own. “Nice pronunciation, Miss Valentine,” he said.

No sooner had Norman finished his sentence that he saw Branxton take a tumble. Oh dear, Melin! Didn’t he know that the animals weren’t real? Dodging the others’ spells, he made his way to the boy’s side. “Are you alright, Mr. Branxton?” he asked, eyeing him with mild concern. That bloody knee didn’t look good! Perhaps a trip to the healer was in order.

A quick glance at his watch told Norman it was time to move on. “Your attention, please!” he said, holding up a hand for quiet. “You’ll have more time to practice net conjuring later. For now we have another spell to learn, and that is the vines to ropes spell…”

He paused a moment or two to allow time for the students to find a stopping place and focus on him. Everyone paying attention now? Good, moving on… “This is a transformation spell, so you’ll probably have an easier time with it than conjuration but the same principles of concentration and visualization apply. To cast, use the incantation Vinea Funiculus. There’s no fancy wand work involved, just point at your target like so…”

He aimed his wand at one of the vines along the outside of the maze and cast, “Vinea Funiculus!” In an instant, there was a rope dangling where the vine one was. Everybody get that? Just in case, he demonstrated again. “Vinea Funiculus!” Another vine was replaced with a rope.

With a wave of his wand, the spell information appeared on the chalkboard below the one from earlier:

Quote:
Vinea Funiculus
Pronunciation: VIN-e-A FUN-i-cul-US
Wand movement: point at target
Use: turns vines into ropes
After allowing some time for the students to copy that information down, Norman continued, “Soon you’ll be heading into the maze, either solo or in small groups. Inside you’ll find obstacles that can be overcome using Incolcovo, Vinea Funiculus, or some combination of the two. Keep in mind that everything in the maze has been conjured, so you will never be in any real danger!” Did that ease everyone’s fears? He hoped so, but just in case, he added, “But if you’re scared or need help for any reason, send up red sparks and I’ll come to you.”

“You may practice Vinea Funiculus on the vines along the outside of the maze before going in if you like,” he said. See, he wasn’t completely heartless! He wouldn't send the students into the maze until they were confident with the spell. “You have the rest of class for the maze. Let’s get to it!"

OOC: Thank you so much for sticking with me! We’ve made it to the main activity. For this, your student needs to make their way through the maze and defeat as many obstacles as possible in the time allotted using Incarcolvo, Vinea Funiculus, or both. Please DO NOT rp for the obstacles! I’ll be posting them periodically throughout. Partner/group work is allowed and encouraged for this activity. Students may also practice Vinea Funiculus on the vines along the maze before going inside. You’ll have A LITTLE OVER 72 HOURS for this activity!

Bella was hilarious without trying to be, did she know? When she sneezed and winded up drawing out the incantation, that bit was enough to make Jude laugh. “Pretty sure that’s not what the incantation’s supposed to be,” he teased good naturedly. He was sorry he had no tissue or hanky to offer but he did give Bella a nod of encouragement. “You got this.”

Carton’s words of encouragement helped Jude feel better about himself and he nodded his thanks to the man. He shot a glance at Evan then smiled at him. Jude always knew that Evan could do whatever he set his heart to, if he worked hard enough.

Moving on. The vines to rope spell. Now that was one that seemed extra handy. Jude was super pleased to hear that he may have an easier time with it, and so he got right down to practice. “Vinea Funiculus, Vinea Funiculus.” That incantation rolled right off his tongue. And you know what? Carton was right. The Hufflepuff did have a considerably easier time with the spell. It took him three tries to turn his first vine to a length of rope.

Now he was all set to get going in the maze. “Want to join me, Bells?’’ Even as he was asking Bella the question, his eyes were back on a certain Ravenclaw. Jude was tempted to ask Evan if he wanted to come along as well but right now he wasn’t sure what Evan was thinking. Jude definitely didn’t want to crowd him, especially when the Hufflepuff was trying to give him space. He managed to hold onto his resolve by keeping his mouth shut so as to not ask Evan to accompany him, and instead took the steps that lead him into the maze.

Lisa smirked at Atlas’ response and then TURNED BRIGHT PINK AY THE… the… did he just wink at her???

Before she could reply, Professor Carton has interrupted them. Shame… She almost had a smart response back but opted to close her mouth instead of embarrassingly replying in front of him. Instead, she returned his wink with a smile. “But professor! Couldn’t it be an… intriguing use of the .. lesson’s application?” she offered with a silly smile aimed for her partner.

She waited for the Professor to walk onto the next group and offered him a smirk. “Then again Atlas maybe we could make a bet and see who could capture the most objects with the spell? What do you want if you win?

Before details could be further discussed, the Professor was explaining another spell which caused her to write down the name and description of it. Vinea Funiculus. And now a maze…. she was intrigued by said maze…

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash knew how to conjure nets. And she was about to learn how to transfigure vines. But she was NOT NOT NOT going to need any of that, because she was NOT going in!

"VIN-e-A FUN-i-cul-US. VINeA FUNiculUS. Vinea funiculis- no, funiculus. Vinea funiculus." Ash practiced this spell for like... way too long. She clearly had the spell down, but she DEFINITELY NEEDED more practice. Definitely totally. She was sooo not trying to avoid the mazes and vines and stuff. There was tooootally no reason why she would dislike any of those things, haha.

Oh, there was never any real danger... well. The danger was real in her mind. Creepy crawlies... mazes... vines... Ash didn't think so. She'd just sort of hang out over here and practice her spells. She didn't really wanna go against the professor, but he was way less scary than the maze. So. She was NOT going! This was not going to be another lesson where professors made you see scary things that they didn't tell you about first.
