School-wide "The Floor is Lava" Tournament

It's a cold dreary February day outside, the perfect weather for staying inside and playing games like the one Professor Carton has planned. In contrast to the weather outside, several heating charms keep the transfiguration corridor toasty warm as an oven. Or should the expression be toasty warm as a volcano?

The temperature isn't the only thing unusual; the hallway has undergone a dramatic change in appearance. A massive pit full of colorful balls spans most of the corridor with sections of flooring around the perimeter. There's a line along the nearest end of the ball pit marked "START" and a corresponding line along the far end marked "FINISH". A random collection of objects sit piled in a corner near the starting line, among them newspapers, boxes, foam pool noodles, cardboard gift wrap tubes, and butterbeer caps. Is Professor Carton doing some pre-spring cleaning, or do these objects have something to do with the game? Only time will tell!

Professor Carton stands to one side of the starting line, awaiting the players' arrival. "Hello, welcome!" He greets each person. "The game will begin in about ten minutes."

OOC: We'll kick things off in 36-48 hours. ^_^

Dhruv occasionally attended their colleagues’ activities. Occasionally since it depended on their lessons to be held and office hours schedule. Nevertheless, they had been quite delighted when they found out Norman was holding his activity during one of the moments Dhruv’s schedule was free. This was why the DADA professor found their way to the tournament.

“Nice set up, Norman,’’ they said by way of greeting. Not to mention the warmth! Dhruv appreciated the warmth so much. Knowing a bit about what today’s activity entailed, they stood out of Norman’s way but close enough to say hi to the students too.

A tournament…

Playing the game Rajesh remembered from his earlier years and run by his head of house. Though admittedly Nadia had always seemed to be the best at it, the little brave monkey she was. He himself hadn’t been the most athletic, at least in recent years, something that had started with his overly lanky shape as a teen and finding more comfort and fun in his books at times. Still, the seventh year decided to at least check it out and see what it was all about, especially with curiosity over what Professor Carton had in his plans.

He felt the correct location on the sixth floor before he saw it, the area obviously charmed to be so warm. There he found not only the professor in question, but Professor Khanna as well. “Good afternoon Professors,” he greeted them with a nod of his head. Really? He was the first student to arrive? That seemed off.

Celeste had positively chuckled when the notice had gone out about her transfiguration colleague’s gathering. It sounded quite fun, though definitely something she would just be watching and cheering students on about. At the very least be supportive of Norman the way he had been with her group activity. Approaching the corridor in question, the woman was more than glad she had opted to tie by her hair today, her curls already threatening to frizz in the humidity brought on by the charmed area.

“Good afternoon…” she greeted Norman, Dhruv and Mr. Atreyu-Rehman who seemed to be the first student to arrive amongst the adults. Though he was practically an adult himself she supposed. “Going to play along, Mr. Atreyu-Rehman?”

And another professor was added into the mix and he was outnumbered three to one. “Undecided, Professor Gert,” he answered truthfully, his hands stuck in his pockets as he awaited classmates to arrive. The Ravenclaw feeling just a touch sheepish.

Anything for a bit of competition and distractions from the looming graduation and NEWT stuff which was pretty much summed up to why Apollo was here. Although even if there wasn't the distraction bit, the gryffindor was ALWAYS in the mood to let his competitive side show. He had to give a confused look though at his arrival to the corridor when he saw only a fellow seventh year there and three professors? Well of course Carton was there, he was running the tournament. Had he misread the notice board?

"Professors versus students?" He asked curiously.

"Students don't have a chance if that was the teams...." Marilyn Sayse grimaced coming up the corridor behind the seventh year Gryffindor. She'd seen the notice board and while she wasn't super competitive, she did enjoy the floor is lava game (having played with her boys when they were younger)

She looked to her fellow colleagues present as well as the two students present. "so what's the prize for the winners?" Not that she planned to win, but she did want to know what was at stake here.

Chelliephone 02-23-2023 04:11 AM

As if there was ever a world in which Vera Brinley Thanatos was going to miss out on a school wide game. Floor is lava also just HAPPENED to be one of her favorites. She was also a very competitive tiny soul so already she had a strong desire to win and make it from start to finish. At least.... until she saw their 'lava' floor, which was essentially a ball pit. Which was just truly MEAN of Professor Carton to tease them like this. She wanted to not fall in lava, but also a little bit wanted to fall into lava, y'know? Standing on her tippy toes to better peer at the course, she smiled somewhere in the direction of Carton. "Hi Professor! After we play floor is lava, can we also just jump into the ball pit?" It didn't hurt to ask right?

Green eyes then surveyed the rest of the group which compiled... Professor's. And two seventh years, one from her own house - Adonis was it? - and the other one she didn't know well but seemed to be in Vasco's. And she was pretty sure a 6th year was approaching too. Where were HER people? Mainly third years. Hopefully one of her dormmates or Vasco or Maria showed up. But in the mean time? She was also pretty happy to bother Professor Khanna - which was exactly what she set out to do as she moved alongside them. "Hello, Professor! Would you like to strategize together on how to win?" DADA Professor? She liked her odds on that if they did.

Professor Gert and the other students also got head nods of hello.

Despite the fact she was nearer to adulthood than her parents ever liked to remember, Mouse was not opposed to indulging her inner child and playing a game here or there when it was offered. And truthfully, floor is lava sounded like the perfect physical activity to exert some of her energy before it was back to the books to do some much needed studying. The classes were very similar between here and Beauxbatons, and yet she was finding gaps in her knowledge versus those of Hogwartians. Particularly in History of Magic which was where she often found her nose buried these days.

Yes, this would be the perfect distraction from all of that.

Coming up on the group, she noted the amount of Professors - all who got smiles and nods in their directions - and Raj, another seventh year Apollo (she believed) and a younger student. Feeling a little self conscious about how she probably gravitated towards him too much, she still found herself heading towards Raj and giving him a smile right as she heard his response to Professor Gert. "Only so long until you're out in the adult world. Enjoy the kid parts now while you can." She grinned at him, before looking over towards Professor Gert and extending the same smile. "Are you going to participate, Professor?" They could always do teams - Profs vs students, just as the Gryffindor said. She smiled over at him as well and gave a nod in hello.

Nordic Witch 02-23-2023 02:57 PM

The badger third year by name of Maria came into the transfiguration corridor, curiously taking in the 'floor is lava' tournament set up as she. She was still undecided if she was going to participate or not. She wanted to hear more about the lava game. Heading over to stand next to Vera she questioned looking over at the professors present, but mostly at Professor Carton. "Prof Carton will this be like a duel game where we meet each other in lava matches?" Turning to her lion friend Maria asked "Hi Vera, are you going to participate in the game?"

Bella was glad for the break in homework and NEWT revision that seemed to be looming over her like a cloud. A tournament sounded fun even if she wasn't sure if she had ever heard what the floor i lava game entitled. If the seventh year snake had to guess then it sounded like a game of don't touch the floor but Bella could be totally off. She waved in greeting to peers and professors alike as she headed over to stand by Apollo's side with a big smile. "Hi Apollo, it's nice with a fun distraction from homework and things, right?"

Kolyander 02-23-2023 06:01 PM

The Floor was Lava?

Count Keighley in! With everything she had on her plate lately, she needed a little break for a fun student/professor activity. Plus this was a game she knew well, it wasn't all that hard to play. Well.. okay, the rules were fairly easily is what she meant.

So obviously the blonde fifth year grabbed hold of the person she loved to work alongside. Jude. If they didn't make the best team ever, no one did. It was with her arm linked through one of her big brothers and skipping alongside him, that she made her way towards where the 'event' was being held in the empty transformed corridor. "Whoa! Lookit it!" Cue some gentle nudging of her elbow in excitement as she glanced at Jude with a huge smile on her face. This was going to be so much fun!

Hello, Professor Carton." Keigh waved in his direction and then to each of the other professors that were already there. Would they all be joining in too?

astrocat 02-23-2023 09:26 PM

This sort of thing made Brandon anxious. The floor is lava sounded like a recipe for someone falling and hitting their head. But Brandon had been talked into it by a friend, and his concern for his friend getting hurt convinced him to come.

Looking over the scene, Brandon decided that this didn't seem TOO dangerous. He guessed they'd have to cross without falling into the ball pits. Cross on what? And what were all those objects for? Brandon had several silent questions.

He stood near Professor Khanna, because he thought they were cool. And respected the safety of kappas, even fake ones. He also stood nearish to Professor Carton, who seemed to be in charge(was he going to transfigure things?). He didn't say much to anyone, though. Only a quiet 'hi'. Brandon wasn't upset, he just wasn't particularly talkative.

FearlessLeader19 02-23-2023 11:56 PM

It was only a matter of time before students - and colleagues - started to file in. First came Rajesh, one of the brightest minds at the School in Dhruv’s opinion. “Good afternoon, Mr. Atreyu-Rehman.” There was a smile for Celeste. “Oh, there’s nothing wrong with looking on,’’ they told Raj kindly. “Right, Celeste?” Dhruv though? Dhruv was going to be taking part fully. They enjoyed a healthy competition as much as those spa days with Gaia.

Students versus professors? Now there was an idea, Apollo! They glanced at Norman, wondering what his thoughts were before chiming in an agreement with Marilyn. “That’s right! Don’t count your professors out.” Did you hear that Vera? They offered the Gryffindor a smile as she approached. Did this mean that Vera wanted to work with them? Dhruv was up for working with students as much as professors. “I’d like that. What ideas have you got so far, Ms. Thanatos.” Because Dhruv liked to think they had a handle on Vera, and Vera always had ideas. “Hallo, Mr. Fox. You’ll be participating as well, yes?” Brandon was often quiet and somewhat timid but Dhruv did enjoy having the boy around. Dare they think it also, that they felt protective towards him?

Jude arrived with Keigh as they had come from the Hufflepuff Common Room together. There had been no way the siblings were missing this sort of fun! He could feel the excitement radiating off of his sister and even pulsing through him from her via their linked arms. There were so many already gathered when they arrived - he was delighted to see so many professors. “Hi, professors!’’ he greeted Carton, Khanna, and Sayse. “Hi, guys!’’ Friendly grins for Bells, Mouse, Apollo, Raj and Brandon. The Hufflepuff took the time to survey what Carton had set out for the group after being nudged at by Keigh. “Looks like a great time already!’’ Jude told Keighley. This was regardless of if they were put into teams. He’d be happy just working with his baby sister though. Truthfully, she was one of the handful of persons he worked super well with.

MadMadamMalfoy 02-25-2023 01:01 AM

Norman glanced at the pile of objects, making a mental tally of how many of each item there were. A voice jerked him out of his thoughts, and he turned to face Khanna. “Afternoon, Dhruv,” he greeted with a nod. “Thank you.” His two other colleagues who arrived soon after (Gert & Sayse) likewise got a polite nod in greeting. “Good afternoon, Celeste, Marylin,” The charms professor’s question might have gotten a slight smile from him. “All will be revealed in time.”

“Hello, Mr. Atreyu-Rehman, Mr. Adara-Stark,” he greeted the two seventh years, stifling a laugh at the idea of professors vs students. “Now that would be fun!” He glanced at his colleagues. “What do you think?”

Merlin, these kids were full of questions today! Not that Norman minded, of course. “Hello, Miss Thanatos,” he replied with a slight smile. Jumping into the ball pit wasn’t exactly what he had in mind, but he didn’t see any harm in it. “You can if we have extra time after the game.” Dolph’s question was unexpected but likewise got a smile and an answer. “Good afternoon, Miss Dolph. No, not today, though that sounds like a fun game.” Maybe he’d hold on to that idea for another time.

Noticing Fox standing somewhat nearby, Norman nodded politely, returning the boy’s quiet greeting. “Good afternoon, Mr. Fox.” More greetings soon followed for the other arriving students (Durand, Connolly, and the Anders siblings). “Hello, Miss Durand, Miss Connolly, Miss Anders, Mr. Anders.”

Norman’s bluish-green eyes scanned the corridor. Wow, there was a pretty good turnout for this! Maybe he should make this game an annual thing. He allowed a couple more minutes for stragglers before addressing the group, “Welcome to the School-wide ‘The Floor is Lava’ Tournament! For anyone who’s never played this game before, the object is to get from Point A to Point B without touching the floor - or in this case, the balls in the pit. Normally one would accomplish this by hopping onto pieces of furniture or other objects along the way, but our game has a twist: you’ll be creating those objects using transfiguration.”

Was that clear so far? Good, moving on… “You may pick anything from this assortment of items -” He gestured to the pile beside him. “-to transfigure using any combination of the spells we learned earlier this term: Temran Madera, Palus, and Taque. One caveat to using Taque, however: the nails you transfigure may be used for construction only. No puncturing the balls, no poking people, no hiding nails in the pit in hopes someone steps on them!” He really shouldn’t have to say that, but you never knew with some of these kids!

“You’ll start at the line on this side of the pit, and use whatever apparatus you transfigure to cross without touching the balls. If you touch the balls, you must go back to the starting line and try again. First person or team to make it across gets their pick of this…” He picked up a box sitting to one side of the pile and opened it to reveal an assortment of Honeydukes candy. While he wasn’t a big junk food eater himself, he thought the students (and possibly professors) would enjoy a little treat. “There’s plenty to go around, so everyone will get something.”

“Everyone not playing, please stand to one side of the ball pit. Everyone else, take some time to choose your teams - or you may compete solo if you prefer - and strategize amongst yourselves. Are there any questions before we begin?"

FearlessLeader19 02-26-2023 10:42 PM

Dhruv would not mind if this was an annual thing. Sign them up for competitions around the school! Especially if it involved them being paired with a familiar face. They paid close attention as Norman explained the do’s and don’ts of the activity. They didn’t want to mess things up for their partner or partners now, did they? It all seemed simple enough to them and they found themself switching questioning looks from Vera to Brandon. “Would you care to transfigure the objects? Perhaps we can build a bridge of some sorts.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

The instructions were easy enough. Jude’s eyes were fixed on the ball pit. “It’d be a lot more fun if we could just dive into the pit and have ourselves a merry time,’’ he whispers to his sister. Yes, he was legally an adult but at heart and soul? Jude was a child. “So, any thoughts, Keigh?” He was in no rush to complete the challenge. What mattered was that he had a great time, and with the littlest Anders? There was always an excellent time when he was with her! “Planks, poles and nails. Those were what Carton taught us during that particular lesson.” An idea occurred to him immediately after those words. “We can build a floating raft of sorts! Well, more like a hovering raft. See, I’m thinking we can apply the Levitation Charm to it afterwards and we can navigate it over to the other side.” Jude’s eyes shone with the prospect of such a project.

"No. Count me out," Javier announced as he walked in, hearing Norman ask the professors who had already gathered if they wanted to do students vs. professors. Absolutely not. That sounded like his nightmare.

He was mostly here to make sure no students died. This sounded both like it could be really fun to watch, and also a total bloodbath. You never knew which way it was going to go with teenagers. Those foam pool noodles especially looked like they could be used as a weapon, and not for their intended purpose.

"If you lot want to jump in though, don't let me stop you," he added quickly, realizing that might have sounded a tad harsh right off the bat. "I'll hold down the fort. Or, er, lava pit...while you all have fun if you want," he offered with a small smile. Javier, being the one who volunteered to be the responsible one? That was...not surprising in the slightest, honestly.

Nancy wasn't SUPER awesome at Transfiguration, not compared to her other classes, but still - the floor is lava sounded like SUCH a fun game! Especially when you got the whole school involved! She tried to remember the lesson from a few months ago where they'd covered these spells and was having a bit of a hard time remembering. Still, she was sure it would come to her as she worked...right?

Deciding to go with a simple plank ladder idea, she headed over to the cardboard boxes and started to gather up some. If she could get enough planks to make crossings over the obstacles, and make them long enough that she could travel along the obstacle course taking them with her as she went...that was easy enough, in her opinion! Right now, she was inclined to work solo - she was faster that way - but would also be down to work with someone if they wanted to.

astrocat 02-27-2023 09:33 PM

Brandon had always been secretly food motivated. It was natural, because food was necessary for living. He thought that it would be more effective if the losers weren't allowed to have any dinner, but he understood why offering the winners candy was much more fun. He liked candy. Not as much as he disliked losing his dinner, but he did very much like candy. Mostly hard candy.

Apparently they also got candy if they lost? Brandon again understood that this was a friendly competition that shouldn't leave anybody miserable. Brandon liked that kind of competition. He nodded happily as Professor Khanna offered to be on his team. With Vera, maybe. He didn't know Vera very well, but he liked Professor Khanna lots, and anyways he didn't want to be alone. Alone was worse. "I was thinking that we could transfigure a flattened box into a wooden piece and push ourselves across the pit with a pole, but I don't know that we're all light enough or that the balls are strong enough." It would be fun to try. But this was a competition. "A bridge could work. But I think we'd have to put pole supports into the ball pit. We could build several table things and go across like that. We could also make really giant poles to cross the pit, stabilize them at either end with planks, and inch across. But that would be an awful workout." Why was Brandon whispering? Because he didn't want anyone to steal their ideas! He liked candy. And winning.

He fell quiet, looking from the materials to the pit and back again. This was hard.

Kolyander 03-01-2023 04:41 PM

Keighley was most definitely squishing her brothers arm in pure excitement as she stood there beside him listening to the instruction that were being given out. "Jumping in and playing around in the ball pit does sound like a great time.." came her soft whispered reply. Maybe they would get their chance to do so after the game was played. Right now they had some planning to do on how they were going to get themselves to the other side of the 'lava pit'.

The Hufflepuffs gaze took in the items that were around for them to be used and her mind went to work. Not that she got very far when Jude spoke up with an idea of his own. "Uh-huh, all of which I think I've gotten down now." A little extra practice after that lesson had helped with that. As Jude explained his theory to her, Keigh nodded slowly trying to picture it all in her head. "I think it could work but do you think we can get both of us across at the same time?" That might be the real challenge right there! Either way, he could count this girl all in!

FearlessLeader19 03-02-2023 12:16 AM

Dhruv was all for hearing the ideas! Theirs had just been a quick suggestion without much thought since they didn’t intend on hijacking the students’ brainstorming. In their mind, the activity was set up mainly for the teens’ benefit. They smiled at Brandon encouragingly. “That could work. I think you forgot that we’re allowed to continue doing magic even after we finish with the transfiguration,’’ they reminded gently. “Perhaps there are a few spells we can apply to assist with getting us to the other side.” Dhruv could think of a few but they would only be voiced if Brandon and Vera were completely stumped. Also, they were pleased that Brandon had picked out a flaw with the bridge plan.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Oh yes. Jude’s arm was definitely getting numb from all that squeezing. Not that it bothered him; he liked seeing Keigh so excited and happy. Since jumping into the pit was not allowed {at least for now? as Keigh was hoping}, the older Hufflepuff had his full attention on their course of action.

“Of course you do!’’ he complimented the sister. “You’re great at spell work!” Jude was one hundred percent proud. “If both you and I are doing the levitation at the same time, I don’t see why not.’’ There wasn’t any hurdle Jude and Keighley couldn’t get past together! “So, we’ll need some planks, poles - which we can make into rails so that we don’t fall into the pit - and nails. I can handle the planks for now.” That left Keigh to choose if she wanted to take the nails or poles. “Shall we collect some materials then?’’

MadMadamMalfoy 03-03-2023 12:09 AM

Norman’s bluish-green eyes scanned the group as it split off into smaller teams. He was hardly surprised to see the Anders siblings working together. Elsewhere, he saw Fox teamed up with Khanna, and it looked like Schultz was flying solo. Mentally keeping track of the teams, he watched them work. As he observed, he overheard some sound strategies, but he refrained from commenting on them. The point of the game was for them to figure out what worked on their own!

Something that did warrant a verbal response? Javier’s comments. Norman had to stifle a chuckle as the potions master voiced exactly what he was thinking. He was mostly joking when he asked his colleagues about student vs professor teams, though he might’ve allowed it to happen if enough people got behind the idea. While he was confident he could hold his own to the students, he had no intention of actually playing. He was the mastermind behind this game; it wouldn’t be fair if he took part in it. Besides, someone needed to referee! “Thanks for helping me hold down the fort, Javier,” he replied with a polite nod.

A quick glance of his watch told Norman it was time to move on. “Right, that’s enough strategizing!” He addressed the group. “You may begin at the sound of my whistle. First team to get everyone across the pit without touching the balls wins.” Hear that, kids? All team members must cross for the win to count.

“On your marks, get set, GO!” The whistle’s shrill blast echoed throughout the corridor, signaling the start of the game.

OOC: So sorry for the delay… rl work kicked my butt this week! >_< The game has begun; here’s a quick recap of the rules:

- The balls in the pit are “lava”. Touch the balls, and your character must return to the starting line.
- First team to cross without touching the balls wins. Every member of the team must cross.
- Transfigure the objects into something to help your team cross using any combination of Temran Madera, Palus, and/or Taque. Any nails transfigured with Taque are for construction purposes only!
- Please indicate in the title of your post what your character(s) is doing (e.g. transfiguring, crossing the pit, touching a ball & starting over). This will help me keep track of the teams.

Happy playing! Let us know if you have any IC or OOC questions. ^_^

Catching up so still picking team

Professors versus students?

Celeste found herself chuckling at the thought brought up by the Gryffindor seventh year. Though not because she felt as her colleague did, that the student body didn’t stand a chance. The right motivator could help make up for the inexperience of the younger crowd. Like whatever prize Marilyn was asking their host about. She got a nod from Ms. Thanatos and a smile from Ms. Durrand who also inquired if she would be participating.

Hmm decisions….decisions..

She waved back at Ms. Anders and her quiet greeting. “Hello Mr. Anders,” she said, returning the greeting of the elder sibling. “Oh very right,” she agreed with her fellow professor. Watching the fun was bound to be just as amusing. Which was the option Javier seemed to be taking from the get-go as he arrived into the midst of things.

“How about this….I give ye all a head start?” she mused to the assembled who asked if she was playing along. No yes….no outright no. And no one accusing her of cheating right off the bat. The older woman moving off to the side as directed.

---------------------------------------------

Raj raised an eyebrow as Mouse came along, commenting on his hesitance to join in on the fun of the situation. “Oh really…” he mused returning smile for smile…maybe a touch of a smirk. “Care to work together?” he found himself asking his fellow Ravenclaw. Two were always better than one so he opted for that option rather than competing against each other. There was already one professor/student team getting ready, Jude and Keighly pairing off and and Professor Sayre seemed gon-ho to be on her own and beat her students.

And then Professor Carlton was starting them off and the seventh year looked to his would-be partner to see what was what. His mind already thinking back to the class in question to remember the spells they would be using.

Chelliephone 03-05-2023 03:48 AM

Catch up! Ve starting on Transfig, Mouse strategizing

The Gryffindor's eyes lite up at the arrival of her friend, and she put her arm through Maria's to give her a small squeeze of greeting. As for the question of if she was joining? A slightly incredulous look was the response there, as her head nodding. "Of course I am!" This was just the type of chaotic avenue that she looooooved, okay? Plus, Maria would be the one first to know how much she apparently loved diving into pits - no matter the contents. Soz slugs.

When Professor Khanna asked what ideas she had, Vera did in fact have MANY but the majority of them consisted of trying to piggyback off of her Professor's brains in hopes of winning. Competitive nature, you know. But as Professor Carton explained rules and Brandon then joined them, it was obvious to Ve that she was not going to have a chance to freeloaf with Khanna. A shame really, though she wasn't really surprised. As for the already offered ideas? Either Brandon's boat OR the bridge could be worked with further magic, like Professor Khanna was pointing out. Lowering her voice to match the younger Hufflepuff, she offered her thoughts. "If we did the raft, we can try using the Feather-light charm on ourselves to make sure we aren't too heavy to make us sink into the lava. Ooooor if we're going to go the bridge route, what if we made one long enough for like... one of us at a time and tried to use it to levitate ourselves across? Feather-light might come in handy here too." She also had concerns if a third and first year would be able to cast a strong enough spell in order for either ideas to take route but... they wouldn't know unless they tried, right?

As for the fact it was time to start well... either option required lumber, so while deciding to wait for the firm decision from everyone else's opinion, she could at least start on some cardboard. Grabbing a couple pieces, she plopped herself down and began casting Temran Madera. Look team! She could kind of be helpful! Though she certainly did not gaurantee the integrity of these wood pieces. Yikes.

**********************

The head start question seemed enough confirmation that Professor Gert would in fact be joining them in the fun, and Mouse found herself smiling at the Astronomy Professor - looking forward to what the Professor had in store for her own strategy. She certainly sounded very confident. And Professor Khanna was also pairing up with some students, while Professor Sayse was clearly looking to beat them on her own. Professor Hernandez was sitting out, which was a shame but she couldn't blame the man for deciding to do so, and Professor Carton was natural overseeing the event. Even if there was a wide range of involvement, it was fun seeing the Professor's also so dedicated to joining the students in events.

Attention turned back to Raj, and her eyebrow raised in amusement at the hint of a smirk on his face. "Really. You're nearly an old man now, Atreyu-Rehman." she teased in response, before nodding in agreement in his offer to work together - perhaps too readily. "I should probably warn you I'm rubbish at building things so... if we're going Taque I will willingly admit I'm going to be useless to you." Fair warning. But there were also probably other options. Considering the three spells from previous in the term, she tapped her chin as she tried to come up with an idea. "We could maybe use a couple of boards, I'm thinking three? And use the sticking charm to attach them to the wall and we can jump from board to board until we're across the pit. If we use 3, we can each stand on one and move the back to front, kind of like leap frog, but not pave the way to make it easier for anyone else?" She wasn't particularly pressed on winning but she didn't want to steal anyone else's fun.

FearlessLeader19 03-07-2023 04:52 PM

Transfiguring planks; with Brandon & Ve!

There were so many plausible ideas among the three. When Vera mentioned the raft, they thought of a much simpler idea. “The Feather-light Charm is a must.” Dhruv did weigh quite a bit though it was not fat. Just putting that fact out there. Ahem. But it was at that precise time, another idea occurred to them, one that definitely showed off the shrewdness and calculating abilities they had in them that the Sorting Hart saw, the abilities that led them to be placed into Slytherin House so many years ago.

“Forget building anything,” told Brandon and Vera, following the Gryffindor to collect materials. “What about if we just transfigure materials into sturdy planks then simply have the planks magicked to take us to the other side? That would be quick and easy. It would most likely secure us the win.” Their black eyes gleamed at the prospect. “We’d just have to be careful not to lose our balance while floating across.”

The DADA professor collected a few foam pool noodles, ready to transfigure some planks, after setting shop shop next to Banshee Vera. "Temran Madera,'' they thought, moving their left hand briskly to bring about the change they needed. In their mind, they pictured a thick, wide plank.

Transfiguring Plank with Mouse

If he didn’t know any better, his dear friend Mouse had been spending waaaay too much time around his siblings with her teasing of him. Though they might be why he was used to a bit of jest and rolled with her playful punches. “Sounds like a challenge to be more like Professor Khanna and not Professor Hernandez,” he remarked quietly so only she could hear. But enough on that, there were others actually starting so they probably should get a move on.

Before the ELDEST person in the corridor took her first steps into the mix.
Rajesh listened as she tried to warn him of her skill level, waving off her feelings that she’d drag him down. “I suppose that’s part of the idea…learning the spells better with a little fun mixed in. It’ll be fine.” And they’ll keep nails out of their progress if they can so no Taque needed. Her idea certainly had some sort of merit…he didn’t think Professor Carton had said anything against finding a way AROUND the ball pit. There was a ledge of corridor along the sides after all.

The seventh year moving closer to the starting edge, he scoped out the items nearest to them to try and figure out what to work with first. His attention settled on a decent sized box and decided to try and make it their first plank, figuring to make use of its shape to be thicker than usual to better bear their weight. He slipped his wand out from its pocket and tried to visualize what exactly he wanted. Then deep breath and one…two…three… “Temran Madera!” he cast, making the horizontal wand movement along his target and watching with relief as it turned into a plank.

One down…however many to go.

With the game officially underway, Norman stood to one side to give the players plenty of space to work. Celeste’s noncommittal words got a slight smile. While he hardly expected her or any of his colleagues to play, it would be interesting to watch! Speaking of which, look at Dhruv’s team!

He watched the DADA professor working with Fox and Thanatos. Although he made no comment on the group’s strategy, he did give an approving nod for Dhruv and Thanatos’s transfigurations. And another nod of approval for Atreyu-Rheman, who he saw had teamed up with Durand.

“Nice transfigurations, everyone!” he addressed the group as a whole. “Keep up the good work!"

Vera and Professor Khanna

"I like that idea! Less material is better. We can make the planks extra strong, and make ourselves extra light." He hesitated. "I don't know the magic for that." Nevertheless, he used Temran Madera to turn a few flattened boxes into wood pieces. He stuck them together and reinforced them with a few thinner wood planks and nails(Temran Madera and Taque) until he had a working platform. Now was the part where he asked for help from his teammates. "I think my platform works. Will you help me be lighter and move across?"

He may have been doing his best forlorn child impression. He was pretty good at it, because he'd been in that position before and knew that he had to be subtle with it. They wouldn't refuse to help someone that truly needed it, would they?

Oops. Sorry, Jude. Sometimes she just couldn't help it. Keighley dialed back some of that excitement and smiled brightly at her brother. That's true. If we both work together the spell should be able to hold out long enough to get us across." This is why she liked working alongside him. He always knew what he was talking about and she never had to worry about anything.

"I can handle the poles." She was pretty sure she would be able to transfigure enough of those for them to use. And then they could work together one the nails. "Yup! Lets go see what we can use!" Don't mind her while she practically tugged him along.

Apollo beamed when Bella entered after her, although he was SLIGHTLY surprised by her presence. She never seemed much for competition and things, but then again - who didn't like 'the floor is lava'? "Distraction but also kind of review for NEWTs in a fun way." He nodded, as Professor Carton went over the rules and the Anders siblings were pairing up. So much for Professors v Students. Or even teaming up with his fellow seventh years. But then again, working in partners might be best anyway. He was curious if there was a prize, as Professor Sayse asked, but Carton wasn't giving anything away. "Partners?" He asked Bella.

Marilyn looked over at Javier's entrance, stating clearly he would not partaking in a professor v student competition. Party pooper, was what she wanted to call out, but perhaps those things were best left unsaid. He might have his reasons. Her bets were on Dhruv anyway; she had a feeling the man had quite a bit of abilities up his sleeve that he didn't always share. Giving the students a head start - as Celeste stated - might not be a bad idea, since the tournament was all about them anyway. She definitely didn't want to take away from them. Also when the prize of honeydukes candy was revealed, she knew too that this was definitely more centered for the students. She wasn't opposed to chocolates, but it wasn't a need either.

Apollo looked over to Bella. "So I suppose we maybe make a couple poles to use that as support to help us swing from platform to platform? I don't foresee a need for nails. I'll make the poles, you make the planks?" He asked, as he gazed around for the objects to transfigure into poles.

Dhruv plank building with Ve & Brandon; Jude putting together a raft with Keigh!

Brandon was on board {no pun intended} with their idea. It seemed as though the trio just might go down this path in terms of the plan indeed. “That’s not a problem. Perhaps Ms. Thanatos can teach you?” Their eyes went to Vera, twinkling merrily. “If not, I can teach you both.” Looking down at the plank they had transfigured, Dhruv determined it would certainly hold his weight. It was quite thick and broad enough for comfortable movement without them taking a dive into the pit.

The professor gave Brandon a curious look. That particular forlorn expression wasn’t one they came across from the Hufflepuff, and it reminded them of those ‘puppy dog eyes’ Muggles so frequently spoke of. “Of course. Ms. Thanatos? Care to give it a shot first?” Dhruv wa snot here to hijack your fun, kiddos!

No worries, Keigh! Big bro understood you one hundred percent!

“Alrightey, that’s settled.” And it would distract him and continue with the charade that he was one hundred percent fine. Because while he hadn’t let on that he was having another moment of his insecurities bugging him, said insecurities certainly were. Jude followed Keigh over to gather the materials. He selected practically multiple of each that Carton had put there.

“Here we go.” The older Hufflepuff selected a newspaper, flattening it out on the ground before him while on his knees. Then he sat back on his heels, wand in hand. “Temran Madera!” The newspaper immediately began to change, expanding and widening until Jude deemed it was wide enough for both him and his sister. Then he flattened another newspaper over that and repeated the process until the second matched the length and width of the first. “Now I’ll just nail these two together…” But first he’d need nails! “Want to help with some nails as well, Keigh? They’ve got to be long enough to stick through both planks.”
