Default Office of Professor Celestia Grimsbane

As visitors enter Celestia Grimsbane's office, they will step into a room that seems completely full of "stuff." There are few decorations on the walls, apart from some hastily put up Quidditch posters and a blown-up version of Minerva McGonagall's chocolate frog card. The left wall is taken up almost completely by a large bookcase. However, most of the shelves on this bookcase are only half-full. The remaining books have been scattered around the office in various piles, some of which wobble precariously as visitors pass by. A couple of shelves feature some seemingly random magical objects, including Sneakoscopes, Remembralls, and Secrecy Sensors -- all of which are in various states of disrepair. Perhaps there is an unbroken version of those objects on the shelves somewhere, but if so, the objects are not immediately obvious.

The right side of the office is dominated by a roaring fire in an abnormally large fireplace. The fire is constrained by a sturdy-looking metal grate, which has all sorts of random swirls and patterns woven into its design. Frequent visitors to the office may notice that these patterns are rarely the same as they were during their last visit. A plush, red and gold rug is spread out in front of the fireplace, along with a couple of squashy armchairs. A number of squeaky dog toys are scattered around the office floor, but most of these sit innocently on top of this rug. A plush dog bed has been laid out between the armchairs and directly in front of the fire, though it bears small teeth marks and other evidence of having been dragged around the office more than once by some sort of creature.

There are no chairs directly in front of Professor Grimsbane's oak desk, which dominates the center of the office, though another armchair sits behind the desk. It is clear that the Transfiguration professor much prefers comfortable, fireside conversations to the traditional setting with the formidable desk separating teacher and student. Particularly observant students may notice a small table shoved into the back corner of the office that bears supplies for tea and cookies.

Professor Grimsbane looked... troubled... or was it annoyed? Disrupted from her work? He was terrible at reading people. But one thing he knew for sure was that he wasn't going to mention that the cookies outside were stale. Not anytime soon, anyway. Daehyun jumped out of his skin when she pulled the door open, surprised she hadn't pulled it out of its hinges with the amount of force she'd used. That was exactly one of those moments when she intimidated him, so he could only weakly squeak out a, "Hello, professor."

Nodding at her invitation, he scurried inside, saying, "I hope I'm not disturbing y-" Was that a kitten? He had a radar for any living creatures, so naturally, his eyes had immediately landed on the ball of fluff, and he didn't even notice the books that were scattered all over the floor. His eyes brightened and his brain went all CUTE KITTY MUST PET MUST CUDDLE and he was clearly holding in a schoolgirl squeal. He was quite proud of himself for keeping his mouth shut. Well, still open, but no inhuman sounds coming out just yet.

He turned to look at professor Grimsbane with pleading, puppy eyes. "I promise I didn't come to waste your time, professor, but can I-can I pet... him... her?" Did the kitten have a name?

A slight frown crossed Celestia's face as Mr. Yoon squeaked out his greeting. Clearly, something terrible was troubling the boy. Although she wasn't his Head of House, Celestia liked to think that she was available for any of her students to talk to about their problems if they wished. With that thought in mind, she quickly smoothed any trace of a frown off her face and replaced it with a bright smile.

"You're not disturbing me at all, Mr. Yoon. Quite the opposite in fact--", Celestia informed him reassuringly -- or she tried to before the Gryffindor's attention was stolen by that feline Thing currently rolling around the floor making a nuisance of itself. Mr. Yoon looked positively shocked by the Thing, which made Celestia take a closer look at the kitten as well.

It was obviously half-kneazle or some such, because as soon as it sensed the boy's attention, it curled into a ball that invited him to pet it. Typical. She could hardly deny any child's puppy eyes, however; they worked just as well with human children as they did with puppies, really. Celestia gave him another tight smile and replied as warmly as she could, "Of course you can. I'm sure, uhh, it would like that very much. Take your time." She hoped it wasn't too obvious that she hadn't even checked to see if the Thing was a male or a female, so Mr. Yoon's question had caught her off guard. She was fairly sure that it was female, but how embarrassing would it be to say that and immediately be proven wrong? Regardless, the entire purpose of the Thing was to put students' minds at ease when they visited her office, and she was very pleased that it was finally serving its purpose in its original form. Celestia favored Mr. Yoon and the Thing with another encouraging smile and then began bustling around to assemble things for tea. Tea always helped upset students, didn't it?

... his pupils were most likely dilated like a cat's when it wanted attention at the sight of the curling ball of fur awaiting him.

Wasting no more time, he walked over and pulled the kitten up in his arms like he would a baby - except, you know, he would never touch an actual human baby - and proceeded to rub the feline's head, moving behind its ears and muttering nonsensical words under his breath, like cute kitty and aren't you a sweetheart, hmmm? It didn't escape him that professor Grimsbane never bothered to name the poor creature, but no worries, he'd be thinking of a suitable name by the time he left the office.

Uncaring that he might end up with his robes covered in fur, he snuggled the feline closer as he turned to professor Grimsbane. He should probably get on with it, his reason for being there. Though now that he'd become smitten with the creature in his arms, he might drop by more often. "Err- what I wanted to ask you, professor-I was wondering if you could help me-if you think I'd ever be capable of achieving-" His eyes fell back on the kitten in his arms, suddenly back to his nervous, stuttering self. "I-I've always wanted to become an animagus-and I know it takes years," he rushed out. "But I thought I'd start early? Even if-just research?"

There it was. Deep breath.

Now he was only going to pray she wasn't going to drop the bomb on him and tell him she felt he didn't have it in him to go through the whole tiresome process.

Celestia barely spared a glance for the feline Thing that was now purring away in Mr. Yoon's arms. She was still pleased that it seemed to be putting the boy at ease somewhat -- or at the very least, he seemed to like it. That was definitely progress. The Thing had spent most of its time in her custody in a pygmy puff's shape, but she'd been thinking that perhaps it could spend some time as a cauldron when it got too annoying in BOTH shapes. It didn't even appreciate all of the dog toys and nice, comfortable dog bed that she had brought in from her parents' place just for it. Such an ungrateful little thing...

Celestia was so consumed by these thoughts that she blinked in confusion as Mr. Yoon finally got his question out. Oh, Merlin, how to word this? She expected these sorts of questions from students, but hearing a second year express the desire to become an Animagus was a bit of a shock for her. She hadn't even given Animagi a thought until her fifth year!

The professor took a sip of tea and dropped into one of the two squashy armchairs that were close to the fire before she even opened her mouth to speak.
"Why don't you sit down, Mr. Yoon?", she asked him with an encouraging smile. Celestia paused for about a minute to keep gathering her thoughts let Mr. Yoon get himself situated before she continued to speak in a gentle tone: "Becoming an Animagus is a difficult, very serious business. As you said, it takes years to become one successfully and safely. To be perfectly honest, Mr. Yoon, you are only in your second year at Hogwarts." Celestia heaved a long sigh and took another gulp sip of tea. She knew that kids hated having their age brought up, but she didn't want this boy to leave her office thinking that it was okay to take chances. "I think that you will be quite capable of becoming an Animagus when you're older IF you study hard and take the proper precautions. You should not by any means attempt to teach yourself how to do this out of a book or by yourself. Is that clear?" Celestia tried to keep her tone light and friendly, but she was afraid that a note of sternness had crept into her voice by the end of her speech. Sighing, she went on in a determinedly lighter tone, "I'm willing to help you in any way I can when the time comes, Mr. Yoon. For now, I'll give you a few titles to check out from the school library. You should work particularly hard in your Transfiguration, Potions, and Charms lessons if you continue to hold this ambition." As she spoke, a black quill lying docilely on the small table next to her chair stood to attention and began scribbling book titles and authors on a spare bit of parchment. Once it had finished, the quill fell flat on its side once again.

Celestia thought over what she'd told the young Gryffindor so far and frowned at herself slightly, before adding, "But all of your subjects are equally important, of course." She wouldn't want word to get around the school that she had recommended certain classes above others -- even if those three subjects were the most useful ones for learning to become an Animagus specifically. All courses at Hogwarts made kids into better witches and wizards in different ways after all.

Oh, sit down. He knew what that meant.

... it was about to get serious.

Holding the kitten close, he joined professor Grimsbane in the other armchair, momentarily forgetting all about his worries as he seemed to drown in it - it was impossibly comfy, and the not for long nameless kitty could settle comfortably on his lap.

... oh. As he listened to her, quietly nodding, his fingers brushing the soft fur ball on his lap, he became more relaxed - excited even. Of course he knew he couldn't do that in his second year, but if there was anything he could read or research, he'd rather start ahead of time. And definitely not attempt it on his own. He couldn't help but laugh to himself when she warned him about trying to teach himself, but he supposed it was a fair warning. So many things could go wrong. "No, no," he said, firmly shaking his head. "I-that's why I came to you."

His eyes brightened and he nodded again in understanding when she'd already begun writing down what he thought to be book recommendations because, really, he knew it was all he could do for the moment. As for Transfiguration, Potions, and Charms... he did... okay..ish? But he would keep in mind to improve and excel. He had to purse his lips to keep his smile at bay at her last comment. "I do want Gryffindor to win the House Cup, so I won't be neglecting any subjects." And that was a promise.

Glancing down at the kitten, he moved to rub the area between her ears like his own seemed to enjoy so much, before looking back at professor Grimsbane. "You can't choose what you turn into, can you?" He did wonder... it would be quite disappointing if he turned into a worm.

Celestia gave Mr. Yoon a warm smile when he laughed at her warnings. She replied smoothly, "I'm glad you did come to me. You might be surprised at the number of students who think they can follow instructions out of a book on their own..." Err, but perhaps it was better not to delve too far into that. There was no need to scare the child with horror stories when he'd already agreed that it was foolish to try it.

Her face positively lit up at the mention of their House winning the House Cup. Beaming, she said heartily, "That's the spirit! I do hope we win this year. It's been a few years since we had a proper House Cup victory, I think." Which was unacceptable in Celestia's mind. The House Cup -- and Quidditch Cup, of course -- had been everything to kids when she was a student here. She didn't understand this non-competitive, cavalier attitude that seemed to have cropped up among some of the students these days.

The feline Thing began an unnecessarily loud bout of purring at Mr. Yoon's petting between her ears. Celestia was tempted to frown severely at it, but Mr. Yoon didn't seem bothered by its excessive behavior. She took time to consider his question before responding slowly, "I don't believe so, no. I certainly couldn't, and I haven't heard of any wizard who managed to choose -- but perhaps that's something else you could research in the library. I'm sure Professor Kennedy could point you towards more reference books..." She knew that the titles she'd written down for him were in the library -- they were just basic background reading. She would be the first to admit, however, that she did not know of ALL the books on the subject that the library might contain. Professor Kennedy would certainly be able to add to her list, and he would know to only give out age-appropriate titles, surely? She didn't want to put Mr. Yoon off his dreams so quickly by having him try to read books written for more, err, mature audiences right off the bat. Some Transfiguration authors could be so very dry.

It was a few more seconds before Celestia realized that she'd been lost in her own thoughts. Pulling herself back to reality, she asked simply: "Do you have any other questions?" Not that she was kicking him out. It wouldn't matter to Celestia if kids came in and entertained the feline Thing all day when they weren't in lessons, really.

He saddened a bit at the thought that it's been years since Gryffindor had won the House Cup, but soon it was all forgotten as he'd realized something. "We? Were you a Gryffindor too?" How awesome would that be? Professor Grimsbane's low-key cheering for his-their House only encouraged him more to do better than last year and help get that House Cup.

His eyes brightened once again at the idea of researching whether he could choose what to turn into or not - although he could never pick. He would have to trust the greater forces to pick something that suited him best. "Would be pretty disappointing if I went through all of that to turn into a beetle... or a butterfly..." As cute as they were, his chances of being squashed to death by anyone or anything would be... high. Turning into a lion wouldn't help matters too much either, since he wouldn't be able to wander freely without scaring everyone witless.

As for questions, he didn't have any for the time being, so he shook his head and stood up, kitten still in his arms, purring happily. "No, I-actually," he glanced at the feline in his arms before grinning at professor Grimsbane. "What do you think about Mira? She needs a name."

Celestia gave Mr. Yoon another warm smile as he asked her about Gryffindor. "I certainly was in Gryffindor!" Really, the thought that she might belong to any other House was a bit insulting -- not because there was anything wrong with the other Houses, but because the idea of NOT being a Gryffindor was like a jarring note in a familiar song.

She was soon distracted from these strange thoughts by Mr. Yoon's comments on turning into some sort of bug. Celestia certainly understood his feelings on that score. "Well, we'll have to wait and see what your Patronus turns out to be. While it's not always a match for your Animagus form, I've found that they turn out to be similar animals more often than not. Unless your Patronus takes the form of a magical creature, of course,"she mused aloud. She hadn't heard of wizards being able to turn into a magical creature through Animagi magic. "But there's no use in worrying about what your form will be now -- and I'm not sure you have quite the personality for a beetle." Celestia tried to keep her tone firm in a reassuring sort of way. After all, there was no way to know and so she couldn't give Mr. Yoon solid comfort. However, the only wizards she'd met who had turned into beetles had been a bit, well, the type of person that flew around and stuck their noses into other people's business. Mr. Yoon hadn't shown any evidence of that sort of behavior in classes or in the Great Hall that she'd seen.

Celestia got to her feet once Mr. Yoon did, and looked speculatively down at the feline Thing in his arms. "Yes, I think Mira is an excellent choice. Thank you, Mr. Yoon -- five points to Gryffindor for assisting me with naming it--err, her." She didn't particularly care what the Thing was called, so she was glad that a student had picked a name for it. Perhaps now it would listen more. She was quite pleased that it had given her a(n) excuse reason to award points to Gryffindor, and the thing did seem to put Mr. Yoon at ease. Yes, it had earned its keep today; perhaps she wouldn't turn it into cauldron after all.

The professor raised an eyebrow and would have made it to the door before more crashes could be heard from the room -- if she hadn't been detained by tripping over the kitten that lived in her office. By the time she had climbed to her feet again, Mira had shot off under one of the bookcases and there certainly had been more crashes from the waiting area.

The professor picked up her pace and had flung her office door open to find Miss Kevelle on the foor picking up pieces. After scanning the room to see what else might be the matter, she determined that the only damage was to her tea set. Celestia moved over to kneel down so that she was at Miss Kevelle's eye level and said simply, "What's wrong, Quinn? Never mind this--" she gestured toward the broken pieces --"you'll cut yourself trying to pick them up." She withdrew her wand from its customary pocket inside her emerald green robes and cast a few nonverbal Reparos, causing the pieces to fly up into the air once again and take their usual shapes of cups and a tea pot. Once that was out of the way, Celestia simply Vanished the tea that had spilled out of the pot. With the mess now gone, Celestia glanced at Miss Kevelle's face with concern brimming in her eyes. "Why don't you come inside?"

OOC: Thanks for posting here first! Feel free to post Quinn in the office thread now
It was a moment before Professor Grimsbane's words seem to register with Quinn and she nodded, setting the pieces down again. Only when the Professor had drawn her wand and the pieces were skittering back into tea pot and tea cups did she fully seem to return to the present from whatever thoughts she'd been lost in. She sat back andFi watched the tea set repair itself for the moment, making a mental note to herself to look up and learn that spell next.

Finally she nodded and wiped the tears from her eyes before they had a chance to fall. "I hate them." That was all the answer Quinn gave before she stood up, collected her back from where she'd chucked it against the door, and made her way into the office.

Quinn didn't say anything else once in the office, instead, as always, she studied and observed, although in such a small space compared to the classroom, she didn't just stand still and sweep her eyes around the room. She walked around, getting a closer look at everything. Part of it was wanting to avoid talking as long as possible. She'd been sure Professor Grimsbane would have already been on her way down to the Great Hall, and hadn't really expected to be sharing anything tonight. There wasn't much getting out of it now, but she could postpone. Part of it was her natural curiosity. The rest was just her.

Nothing was actually touched, just inspected with scrutiny by her eyes. The broken instruments got a curious appraisal. The enlarged chocolate frog card of McGonagall got a bit of attention, but the Quidditch poster received hardly a glance. The color scheme of the rug did not go unnoticed, and resulted in a small, inquisitive appraisal of the Professor. Still nothing was said.

The books, however, got the most attention. Both on the shelf and off. It was while studying the books on the shelves that she finally gave in and answered the Professor's original question. "I got a letter from my parents. The first they've written all term. It was to inform me, simply, that one of the letters I wrote Beth's mum...she's our neighbor...was delivered to them instead. They read it. Of course they did. And apparently it opened their eyes."

Quinn turned away from the bookshelf and glanced first at Professor Grimsbane, and then at the chairs next to the fire place. She collapsed into one with a weight only emotional exhaustion seems to bring. The crackling fire held her attention for a long time before she continued. "They've...they've never been good parents. They don't hit me or anything like that. They've never laid a hand on me. But they've never really done anything else either. Even the stuff, I suppose, parents are meant to do." She didn't go into detail right then, but would if asked. "The letter, I guess...I guess it made them see that. They wrote to me to tell me they realize that now." All well and good, except, "And they see now that it's much too late to ever develop that close of a relationship with me. So they've decided to have another kid, and to do right by this one."

Quinn now would get to watch them ignore another child they ought never have had, or worse. Live up to their promise to be good parents finally, but only to her future little sibling. They'd just written her off completely. Without even trying. She wiped away tears, still watching the fire. "Sorry, Professor. I'd only meant to get out of the corridors and take a moment to cool down. I didn't mean to lose control of my magic and destroy your tea set."

The young Ravenclaw seemed to be in a state of shock, if you asked Celestia. The girl's comment about hating people went unanswered; Celestia had found that people often said more than they meant to if you stayed quiet and left them to their own devices. With that in mind, she followed Quinn inside her office and closed the door behind her softly. Celestia leaned against the closed door behind her and simply watched Quinn as she looked around the office. It wasn't long before the first year gained a different follower in the form of Celestia's black and white kitten, Mira. As she'd suspected, it wasn't long before Quinn started talking about a letter. She listened patiently with a serene expression on her face. Once Quinn had dropped into a chair, Celestia trailed her and dropped into the one opposite the Ravenclaw.

However, Quinn's next words had Celestia struggling not to frown or to say anything. She knew that it would be best if she let Quinn keep talking for as long as she needed to, even if it wasn't long into her explanation that Celestia wanted to curse have a word with Mr. and Mrs. Kevelle. Only once Quinn had fallen silent did Celestia open her mouth and ask softly, "And what things are good parents meant to do that yours don't?" She needed to know how far this neglect had gone. Besides, there were more ways to abuse a child than by physically harming them.

As for the part about having a second child, Celestia was struggling not to see red. What kind of monsters were willing to give up on their eleven-year-old child? "Clearly, your parents don't see what a wonderful daughter they already have," she began fiercely. "It certainly isn't too late for them to change their behavior towards you, and I'm astounded that they think having another child is the answer." The professor leaned towards Quinn in her chair and studied her face carefully. This entire situation was slowly breaking her heart, but she was careful to keep her facial expression as calm as possible. Once she had taken a deep breath, she continued, "You should know that any child they may have after this can never replace you, nor can it excuse any mistreatment that you have suffered. I'm so sorry that this happened to you, Quinn." After another, much shorter pause, Celestia asked again softly, "You know that you deserve to be their first priority, don't you?" Children should always be their parents' first priority and should be treated accordingly. Without knowing exactly how Quinn's parents were mistreating her, it was hard for Celestia to be more specific. However, it was quite clear to her that the Ravenclaw had indeed been abused or neglected in some way -- her parents wouldn't be trying to start over with another child otherwise.

At first she just shrugged. How would she know how good parents should be. But that wasn't entirely true. She's watched Beth's Mum. And Octavia's Dads. She watched the fire for a bit, and shrugged again. Her face was almost unreadable, save for the glistening of her eyes she periodically kept wiping away before an actual tear might appear.

It'd always felt weird and slightly wrong talking about home and her parents, unless it was some made up story she was giving someone. Those usually painted her parents as villians, for the fun of it. But the truth, beyond simple, undetailed statements, that always seemed like begging for pity. And pity, to Quinn, was the vilest thing one person could do to another; pity them.

"..." She closed her mouth again and sighed. It was hard, getting over mental walls like this that have always seemingly been there. "Listen occasionally. My friends usually go on vacations with their parents..." She never did. Last thing Mum and Dad usually wanted on their relaxing, vacation was a child infringing on their relaxation. She usually stayed home, watched and cared for by Keesey, their house elf. "Make time to visit their kid in the hospital..." Or more to the point, she supposed, be willing to inconvenience themselves and adjust the home and their behavior to bring said child home while sick.

Quinn shrugged again, not really seeing the point of listing of things parents should do. She didn't much react to comment of her being a wonderful daughter. Things like that were...uncomfortable. And it wasn't often she felt wonderful, especially not tonight. "I'm quite close to Imogen. Beth's mum. She used to teach here for a bit." And she had visited her, and brought Beth to visit her, often while she'd been in the hospital. "I share a lot with her...and, well, my parents were usually too focused on whatever they were doing to listen much, so I stopped sharing. I guess I could see how the difference between what I show Imogen and what I show them could make it seem like that?"

As for having the second child...well, that was really not that surprising for her parents. They had plenty of money to burn, so why waste time with trying to repair something when you could just buy a new one and be done with it. Except, that would imply the thought of her as an appliance, and she wasn't sure she'd go that far. She wasn't sure she wouldn't go that far either, so she said nothing.

While she listened to the rest of Professor Grimsbane's words, those simple affirming statements she found so uncomfortable because of the conflicting feelings and sense of self they seemed to stir deep within. Though, if asked, she'd never be able to say why she found them so uncomfortable. And finally, that question. The question she knew the answer the Professor wanted to hear from her, but couldn't bring herself to say. She wasn't anyone's first priority. Imogen's first priority would always be her children, Beth and Cordy. And Octavia was the priority of her Dads. And Quinn's parents were their own first priority really. Even Reese. Lovely wonderful Reese had his sister. She was family. She would always be his first priority and honestly should. So no, not really. She didn't feel like she deserved to be anyone's first priority because she never had been. But that wasn't the answer the Professor wanted was it?

So Quinn simply shrugged again while watching the fire.

As soon as professor Grimsbane had mentioned that his animagus form might match his patronus, he couldn't help but wonder just how soon could he cast a patronus in a complete form, not just the pitiful wisps he'd created some time ago when he'd tried it. Could he fast forward a couple of years to be a more competent wizard? He had too much excitement bottled up for his own good. It was a little reassuring, though, when she'd told him he didn't have the personality for a bug. What did he match?

... he was likely going to do some research on that, as well, along with the list of books recommended by professor Grimsbane.

Newly named Mira jumped out of his hold, and- points for naming her? Well, he wasn't going to complain, so he nodded gratefully. "Thank you, professor," he said, fluttering the parchment with book titles. "And for these." Saying his goodbyes with a smile, he left the office, and headed straight to the library.

To start with books on animals that matched different personality types. He had to find that out first.

So Quinn simply shrugged again while watching the fire.

Celestia nodded along as Quinn mentioned that she didn't go on vacations with her parents. She didn't know much about the Kevelles' situation -- perhaps they couldn't afford to take their daughter on vacations? That didn't seem to mesh with some of the horrible things that Quinn had related previously, though. Celestia was simply glad that there didn't seem to be any criminal neglect going on -- at least until Quinn mentioned the hospital. A muscle twitched in the professor's cheek as she fought not to allow her facial expression to show any sign of alarm. Quinn had said that her parents never laid a hand on her, and Celestia sincerely hoped that they had not contributed to their daughter's hospital stay in any way, though perhaps the Ravenclaw had simply been injured or ill at some point in her life. However, Celestia ground her teeth silently at the very thought that someone would fail to visit their child in the hospital. She wanted very much to ask Quinn what had put her in the hospital, but she set the question aside for the moment. The first year had obviously been discharged, so Celestia felt that there were more immediate matters at hand to ask about.

She felt some sense of relief when Quinn began talking about Beth's mother. It was so important for people to have someone to share things with, and she was glad that Quinn's home life was not all dark. "And what does Mrs. Greyvson think about your situation with your parents?", she asked gently. A thought had struck her mind at the mention of a trustworthy adult in Quinn's life, and Celestia paused for a moment. She thought that she might write to Mrs. Greyvson and express her concern for Quinn's well being, though she wasn't yet sure that this would be the right course of action to take. Perhaps Quinn could stay with the Greyvsons during school holidays, if adding a child to their family wasn't too much of a financial burden... Celestia knew that another troubled student at Hogwarts had recently been adopted by her predecessor, and that arrangement had come about through similar beginnings -- a disturbing letter from the girl's parents and their unwillingness to care for her any longer. This certainly seemed to mirror Quinn's situation quite a bit. Celestia thought that mentioning such a letter right now might be a bit much for Quinn, but she kept the idea in the front of her mind.

"Well, I'm glad that you share things with Mrs. Greyvson, Quinn. And thank you for sharing this with me," Celestia added. She noticed Quinn's shrug at the mention of being a first priority and frowned deeply before continuing, "I don't mean to insult your parents, Quinn, but if you are not their first priority -- and it certainly seems as though they have their priorities...mixed up -- then they do not deserve to have you or any child in their care." She kept her voice firm yet as gentle as possible. She could tell that Quinn's self-esteem had taken a huge blow from her parents' treatment -- what child's wouldn't? -- and the things Quinn had described already had Celestia's blood practically boiling. She reminded herself that showing such emotions to the Ravenclaw would likely do more harm than good; this reminder came in time for her to temper her words when it came to describing the Kevelles. The professor tried to discreetly take a deep breath and tentatively went on, "Are there any friends that you could stay with over the school holidays this year, Quinn? Perhaps Beth?"

Daniel

Mr. Yoon was certainly enthusiastic about starting the research process; Celestia could tell that from his body language and expressions alone. She gave the second year another warm smile, which only widened when he thanked her. The thanks was unnecessary, really -- she was always happy to help her students. However, she appreciated the young Gryffindor's manners all the same and responded simply, "My pleasure, Mr. Yoon. Happy researching!" She barely spared a glance for Mira as she jumped out of the student's arms, though she did draw her wand to open the door for Mr. Yoon to exit her office more easily. Celestia silently wished the young lion the best of luck as he left the room.

Quinn tilted her head curiously and studied the Professor, as her fingers danced anxious and antsy on the arm of the chair. There were subtle shifts and ticks in the Professor's expressions, like emotions trying to display themselves before being clamped off too quickly to actually read. Whatever they were, it happened while Quinn had been talking about the hospital. So, she ventured: "Leukemia. I'm in remission."

Did that help? Quinn watched Professor Grimsbane's face for a moment, trying to judge if it had, or just confused her. Whatever. It didn't matter anyway. She shook her head, clearing away the thought. Her fingers still danced and drummed on the arm of the chair, occasionally joined by an anxious leg shaking with pent up energy. Talking was helping calm her head, but anger, the hurt was still there, hiding just below her consciousness right now, in her veins and muscles; around her heart. It was hard to sit still.

"I don't, em..." She looked back at the fire in thought for a moment, drumming not her fingers now, but her whole hand at the wrist. "I don't think Imo...Mrs. Greyvson likes my parents all that much." Not that Quinn blamed her. "At all."

Again, Quinn shifted uncomfortably and just shrugged. It was awkward being told things like that, when all she's ever known was the opposite. It felt like a fairy tale happily-ever-after that just didn't really exist in real life. "Yeah, well...They really shouldn't have been parents." She knew it. She's always known it, and has even said it freely on occasion. Her parents should never have been parents. But they were. And saying they shouldn't, doesn't change anything. "They're not...abusive or anything. They just...are really self-absorbed." They focused on themselves rather exclusively, that was all.

And when Professor Grimsbane suggested staying with Beth and Mrs. Greyvson over break, Quinn's eyes widened a little in surprise. She shrugged, and gave a minuscule shake of her head. "I'm fine. It's fine. I...I'm used to it. I don't need a babysitter." She took a deep breathe, and turned to the fire, wiping away a stray tear, hopefully out of sight of the Professor. "I can take care of myself." She's done it enough. Even during Christmas. Even during her birthday occasionally.

The anger spiked sharply in her at that thought. Talking about the past, that was fine. She'd numbed herself to all that. But now, they were back on the present, and she could feel it acutely again. The angry energy flowing through her muscles like lava making it hard to sit still. That violent, bitter storm raging around her heart, beating down on it; squeezing it; suffocating it.

Now she couldn't not feel it.

Quinn dropped her head, eyes closed, and took on long breath. The nails of one hand dug into the arm of the chair. Focus on her breathing. Ignore everything else. Just breathe. She sat like that for a while, taking deep breaths. Too methodical to be natural. She was forcing her breathing to be slower. Then she ran her hands through her hair again, and looked up. There was a dark, bitter anger burning in her eyes, despite what how she was trying to appear.

She couldn't sit any longer; she had to move; she had to... "It doesn't matter." She half stood up, half jumped up, pacing somewhat erratically. She just had to move. Her eyes everywhere Celestia wasn't. "I don't care, okay? I don't."

Leukemia. There was a word that Celestia didn't ever want to hear from a child; she knew that the disease had sapped the life from far too many Muggle children to consider it anything less than a dire condition. Thinking aloud, Celestia stuttered out, "Your parents...didn't visit you...when you had leukemia?" She was afraid that she couldn't keep the shock off her face or out of her tone. After all, it wasn't a real question -- Quinn had just told her that they hadn't visited. Celestia simply could not imagine anyone leaving their own child to deal with the various treatments and symptoms in a hospital by herself. A glimmer of anger was slowly building in the professor's chest as she listened to Quinn. Why had the Healers never reported the girl's parents to the Ministry? Surely they were guilty of neglect of a severely ill child, if of no more overt forms of abuse. It was increasingly clear to Celestia, however, that Quinn had been severely emotionally abused. "I'm very glad to hear that you're in remission," Celestia added softly, as she quickly attempted to wipe the shock off her face.

As Quinn affirmed that Mrs. Greyvson did not like her parents much, Celestia nodded in satisfaction. Yes, perhaps this woman would be willing to look after Quinn over the holidays. These plans were almost shut down by Quinn's next words, but Celestia wasn't about to give in that easily.
"It is NOT fine, Quinn, and this isn't about needing a babysitter," Celestia told her firmly. "It's about allowing you to have a reliable support system outside of school -- a sort of stand-in parent, if you will." Her resolve to send an owl to Mrs. Greyvson was strengthening by the minute.

When Quinn had that her parents shouldn't be parents at all, Celestia was inclined to agree with her. She continued gently, "Unfortunately, there are many people who should not be parents but have children nonetheless. However, this does not make those children worth any less than those who have more...appropriate parents." The professor managed to stop herself from directly insulting the Kevelles just in time. She was watching Quinn's face intently and did not miss the tear. The young Ravenclaw was doing her best to be discreet, and Celestia thought it was best to allow her some sort of privacy for the moment at least.

She waited patiently as Quinn put her head down and seemed to be focusing on her breathing. Good. She had often found that asking students to take deep breaths when they were upset helped them to center themselves.

The pacing on its own wouldn't bother Celestia; she had the same habit when she became agitated. Quinn's words soon indicated that she was still terribly upset -- the breathing hadn't helped. The professor took a breath herself and endeavored to keep her face as smooth and calm as possible. She got to her feet and moved over to the young Ravenclaw, attempting to put a hand on the girl's shoulder to briefly stop her pacing.
"Quinn, look at me," Celestia said in a firm tone. She added gently, "Of course it matters. You matter, Quinn, and you should not let your parents define your own self-worth." She had to stop and take another deep breath to keep the anger out of her voice as she went on, "You do care. What your parents wrote is out of line, but it would be extremely painful for anyone. You don't have to be ashamed of your feelings, Quinn." With that, Celestia withdrew her hand from Quinn's shoulder to allow the Ravenclaw to resume her pacing if she wished to. She only hoped that at least some of her words were getting through to the Ravenclaw.

She shook her head with a sigh, fidgeting absently with the clasp of a bracelet, and didn't look up at Celestia. "No." She half sighed, half scoffed at herself. "They did. Of course they did. I just...I mean, I was in the hospital for maybe a year and a half. They only really visited four or five times. It simply felt like never." Quinn still wasn't looking at the professor, didn't see the shock written so clearly on her face. Her whole body was burning with a heat that had nothing to do with temperature. She swallowed audibly, as if choking down a thick lump that had been growing in her throat.

"It wasn't like I was alone though. Beth eventually realized where I was, and she and her Mum visited regularly. They brought me books, and my violin." And she made friends in the kid's ward. And their parents checked on her, and brought her treats. "Beth's the reason I'm still here," she said so softly it was barely audible over the crackling of the fire. "She was my bone marrow donor."

Quinn wiped a few more tears, not quite bothering to try and hide them from the Professor, but not trying to be obvious either. She felt as though she was burning up with a heat that had nothing to do with temperature.

She looked up at the sharp firmness in Celestia's tone, unsure, honestly, on how to respond. Quinn finally just nodded silently.

The thing was, Quinn already had that stand-in parent through Imogen. That had developed through Imogen and Beth's frequent hospital visits, and didn't end when she was discharged. It was, in a way, the cause of this. If the school owl hadn't delivered the letter she wrote to Imogen to the wrong house, her own parents would still be unaware there was so much more to their daughter they didn't see, and probably wouldn't be trying to start over with a new kid to have that bond...

No, the breathing hadn't helped. Her pacing was getting increasingly agitated. It wasn't simply the anger, the rage burning in her anymore, it was the pain of it all, the loneliness and longing, that empty, hollow ache like a bottomless hole through her. The professor's kind, firm words coaxed it all to the surface. She was going to breakdown, she could feel it coming and knew she couldn't stop it. She had to go before it...she had to grt out of here and...

Quinnlin jumped the moment she felt Celestia's hand on her as if it was an electric shock, and only barely managing to stop herself from pulling away from the touch. "I'm sorry...I..."

She looked up finally, meeting the Professor's eyes. Her eyes glistened heavily in the light of the fire, like a river of tears were welling up in them. Quinn swallowed thickly. It was readily apparent she was just barely holding it together. "NO! Okay. I don't! I --I can't ca..." A sob had caught her by surprise, choking off the words. She wiped her eyes furiously. The tears had slowly began to roll down her cheeks despite her efforts. "I can't care! Because if I ---because..." Because if she did, it'd crush her completely. And she couldn't let herself feeling, because she'd break, and possibly never stop, and...

Even wiping her eyes wasn't stopping anything. She had to go right now before she did breakdown. "I'm sorry...I ---Just ---just forget tonight, okay? Please..." She edged her way slowly around Celestia, inching her way toward the door. "I'm just ---just tired. And k-keeping you from dinner. You should go and eat."
