Hello to all, but especially to those of you who are joining this wonderful community for the first time *points* Yes, I am talking to you all you newbies *waves* For the month of October I am one of the SS staff members whose brain you can attempt to pick apart who you can get to know.
Before I jump into a mini introduction, I just want to say WELCOME! once again to all of our new members. Maybe you just happened to stumble upon SS, or perhaps you are here by a friend's recommendation. No matter the reason, I hope that you enjoy everything the site as to offer because, well, there is A LOT to enjoy!
*clears throat* Ahem, anyway. I am sweetpinkpixie, but most people here call me Pixie. No, my real name is not Pixie *sorry to disappoint* and I am not a huge fan of Pixie Lott - I just like magical creatures! My real name is Katherine and I live in Japan working as an Assistant English Teacher at two elementary schools and one Jr high school currently. I was born in California and went to university in Oregon where I was a Japanese Studies major with a minor in English. I almost double majored with Computer Science, but my professor made me disenchanted with the subject. Alas.
I just recently got married to my best friend and *gets all mushy* soul mate. Some of my hobbies and interests include graphic design, soccer, translating, and spending far too much time here on SS.
I joined SS a little over a year ago when I was looking up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows events being held in Japan when I saw that SS was in need of someone to go to Tokyo and report on the Deathly Hallows Countdown Event. I was looking up information on a whim and am sure that my finding SS was fate. I have been addicted ever since. So, I joined SS on August 8, 2010 where I dove into the school RP with my current character, Kurumi Hollingberry.
I spend most of my time here on SS in the School RP where I am one of the Gryffindor prefects, Gryffindor Seeker, and a member of the yearbook staff (graphics). I am also the Director of Environmental Rangers over in the Ministry RP (Department of Environmental Regulation & Protection), shopkeeper at the Leaky Cauldron, and was a writer for the Daily Prophet.
Outside of the RP worlds, I am a Fan Fiction mod in the Romance and Character sections, along with co-running the Challenge area. I recently was award a Golden Goblin for my drabbles about the Hogwarts Founders and for my Epic & Adventure story, The Hedwig Chronicles. I am also the graphics officer for the Tom Felon, House Elf, and Sirius Black fan clubs and a language mod in the Japanese forum.
Aaaaaaaaaaand I have talked for far too long and you are probably overwhelmed by the massive amount of pink, so now it is time to ask me questions! Please please PLEASE be sure you have read this post first before asking anything as I will be doing my best to index questions *points below* and repeated questions will be not be answered. Be as creative or as straight forward as you like!
Quote:
Ask me a question to get to know me better! (questions about the site or your sorting or posts don't belong here, those should be asked in the Questions and Answers thread)

Wow, this is a difficult question since both of them could be fascinating people to meet. However, I am going to take the sneaky way out and say Daniel Radcliffe. After all, Emma Watson said it herself, he IS Harry Potter

2. Can you describe yourself in one word?
3. Why did you choose Kurumi as your school RPG character name? If I'm not mistaken Kurumi is the Japanese word for walnut, right?
1. Merlin do I struggle with kanji like no other. I can type and read it just fine nowish. Have you ever heard of a man named James Heisig? He is brilliant! With his method I remembered how to write and the meaning of somewhere around 200 kanji in the span of two weeks. The trick with kanji is that there are three steps to remembering them: reading, writing, and meaning. Trying to do all three at once is overwhelming, so its best to break it up into smaller parts. In his method, you learn kanji by utilizing all the constituent parts of a kanji's written form, and a mnemonic device that Heisig refers to as "imaginative memory" - like making up a story about a kanji to help you remember it. Super helpful.
and...good luck with the JLPT, I have yet to actually pass the level I want/need to.
2. nope, don't think I can Might be because of all the coffee I am drinking.
3. Kurumi has been a name that I have liked for a long time. One of my favorite students I ever taught was named Kurumi and I just like how easily it rolls off the tongue. It is not a very common name these days here in Japan. And the word does mean walnut, but the kanji for her name mean something entirely different. There are three and they mean 'long time/old story' 'Lapis lazuli' and 'beaitiful'.

I think what drew me in was the fact that it really all could be happening right now under our very noses. The fact ther Rowling wrote about places that we all know in the "Muggle" world really helped me feel like I was a part of the world.
And, I am just glad that I can give back to a site that had brought so much to me

2) If you could attend SS Hogwarts for ONE TERM, which previous term would it be?
3) If you could also only attend one lesson, which would it be and with which professor?
3a. Again, only SS peeps.
3b. Hehe. I'm gonna make this one harder and say only professors that were around BK (Before Kurumi).
4) Cause I like even numbers... Which is your favorite Diagon Alley charrie? Can't be mine our yours.
1) just as long as you don't repeat questions which you haven't so you are safe
2) When I was poking through the archives to help with things for the SS wiki, I came across a few terms where I know Kurumi would have loved it - like Mermaid Squirmish because she really likes mermaids...or the term where everyone was turning into creatures
3a) Professor Zookara so I could drool all over him? hehe. Actually, one of my favorite lessons I have participated in was the Pingo paint fight during Tate's DADA my first year.
3b) Come my little friends as we all sing a happy little working song... That ought to answer that one
4) Probably Bryce over in Ollivanders. Actually, he was the first character I EVER RPed with on site, so he holds a special place in my little SS heart:loved;

Oh Nina, your questions always amuse me. At least I don't have to combine fruits and vegetables this time!
1) back when I was an exchange student I had to come up with a new email address for my phone and had NO clue what to do, so I looked at what was around me and saw a pamphlet that said sweet pink paradise or something on it...but that sounded kind of creepy, so I changed paradise for pixie because I like faeries
2) probably not Mostly because I don't know what I would change it to!
3) oops, erm, sort of just answered that one
4) YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES I used to want to be one when I was little and still do
5) You know, I always thought Ariel was a bit...insane for doing all that after falling in love with a guy after first sight. I'm not sure I believe in all that, so I probably wouldn't do what she did

As you grow older and when, if you decided, to have a family of your own outside the SS world, do you believe that you would be upset if you're children disliked the Harry Potter books..?

*eyes your username* football fan? Please say yes! *bats eyelashes* Aurelio = <3
Actually working on trying for that family right now...and I think I really would be. My father grew up reading Lord of the Rings and would read those to me. Thankfully, I loved them and we would read them together every summer. It was a fantastic way to bond with him and I really hope that Harry Potter can bring me the same joy I'll start mine young, still in the womb sort of thing. Audio books = love

His book is AMAZING. I really recommend it. Some of the elementary school teachers I am working with now are actually using it to teach their students - and these kids are Japanese! It really helps if you are a visual learner, which I am. I've been trying to pass the 1 kyu for a few years now...about ready to give up My husband can't even understand some of it and he is a native speaker...
Of course not. I like answering questions
As corny as this is going to sound, my mother. While she may not be a leader in the sense that you were meaning it to be, she has done amazing things. This past year and a half, she has been confined to a wheelchair because of her diabetics and a bone degeneration disease in her hip. She never lost the cheerful side of her personality and has recently undergone hip replacement surgery and is doing just fine now. She is even walking on her own about a month earlier than expected. Many people say that I take after her and it makes me really proud to hear people say that.

Your questions overlap, so I think this response will cover both
In short: Sailormoon did When I was 10 I first saw it on TV (in English of course) and found things that just didn't seem right to me. Taking off shoes when entering a home, school uniforms, cute little box lunches, Shinto...so many things that were foreign to me. Which lead me to the internet (woot Netscape days!)
I found out that the show was from Japan and an interest in Japanese began. I began doing research about the country and its customs, vowing that the first chance I got I would study Japanese - which came when I entered university. I went in undecided and only thinking that maybe I would minor in the language, but the university I went to has about 100 Japanese exchange students come each year to study abroad. Talking with them increased my cross communication skills and only intensified my want to learn Japanese and study abroad myself - which I did when I was a junior. I dunno...everything just seemed to fall into place when it came to my relationship with Japan. I declared my major as Japanese studies as a sophomore and dropped my double major of computer science and math - which I was seriously considering - and dove head first into the subject.
And, for all of you wondering, I had decided my major BEFORE I met Jun. He was just an addd bonus
My host family are the ones who made me want to come back to Japan though. I am an only child, so having siblings for the first time was something I was really nervous about. It ended up being AMAZING and my host siblings still contact me when they are having problems. They really do look to me as a big sister and it is amusing at times when they call me and start off with "Don't tell mom BUT..." Mostly girl problems with my two host brothers. My host sister just calls to ask when we can go shoe shopping

And sheesh...my favorite?! Merlin it is hard to choose... I've loved him in almost everything I've seen him in even if the movie was terrible. I REALLY enjoyed Finding Neverland though. I just love that film.
Of course, his portrayal of Jack Sparrow are what made those films what they are. Without him they would have been terrible and just another pirate film.
