Welcome to the Book Nook!

Think of this thread as a sort of… feedback area, but cosier.

What can be discussed in this thread?
  • Talk about your reading progress and goals, and encourage others in theirs!
  • Books that you are currently reading/hoping to read this year.
  • Discuss any reading challenges you're participating in.
  • You can let someone know that you loved their book review or recommendation.
  • You can pitch ideas for discussions to see whether others are interested.
Things to note:
  • Although there are many things members can discuss in this thread, it is NOT strictly a chat thread. If you want to chat, you can do that privately via VM or PM.
  • Alternatively, you could always start a discussion if you have enough to say on a particular book related topic, and want to have an in-depth conversation about it.
  • No spoilers or sensitive topics should be discussed here.
  • Posts that are off-topic or contain spoilers or sensitive content will be deleted.

Any issues or queries should be sent to natekka or Lissy Longbottom via PM.

See You in The Cosmos by Jack Cheng. The book itself is about a 11 year old boy making a recording to be sent to Mars so the audiobook suits very much some friends also mentioned that Daisy Jones and the Six is more enjoyable in audibook (I haven't listened to it) since the book is in interview format with multiple characters.

Oh, and Karamo's memoir since he's also the narrator.

Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. I listened to it years ago when I had a killer commute, and still rave about it. She narrates it herself and it's amazing.

I also very much enjoyed The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

so I started a new book. I'm still on the fence about it simply because its written like a 12 year old boy and its good and interesting but has its moments. Anyone have thoughts on The Knife of Letting Go by Patrick Ness? Does it get really really good?

I haven't read it. Somehow I'm not really interested with dystopian fantasy anymore (but the only one I've read was The Hunger Games and it was... nine years ago? ) but some of my mutuals on Twitter enjoyed it.

How's your reading challenge guys? I'm stuck. I've picked Magnus Chase for the >450 pages and The Song of Achilles for >10 years writing but the mood is nowhere to be found

I read the first book in this series, and I enjoyed it. I don't really remember why I didn't read any more of the series, except I think I found the book a little dark for me at the time. I should pick them back up and see how it goes.

I did find the stream of consciousness/ reading of the character's thoughts a little off putting at first, but I think I got used to it eventually.

I like dystopian and such but not always. This one was a little tough to get into.

I haven't looked closely at my challenge for here, but I am on book 47 for the year so that is an accomplishment.

I think that was what made it hard to read for me was the stream of consciousness. I finally finished it but it took forever.

I felt like I wasn't making progress on reading because I've missed several months' "read a book a month" goal but I've read 9 and I think that's more than I read all of last year. So feeling pretty good! also finished two books in the last week

What are you all doing for a book in a format or genre outside your comfort zone?

I feel that everything is both in and out of my comfort zone

okay totally months and months later but yay for reading more than last year.

I'm way ahead on books for the year read, but I'm reading one that I'm in a weird love hate with. Its a good book, but I also am so irritated and I can't tell if its the character or the writing style. but I'm also 58% done and it has been a quick read.

I encountered something that just shocked me. Most of my students this year don't know of Harry Potter! I've decided to start reading the books to them, one chapter a day.

I'm trying to get the kiddos to want to read. I have a huge selection of books with novels, Magic Tree House, Harry Potter, Rick Riordan, etc. Including Graphic novels.

Any ideas or tips to get 7th graders interested in reading?

we read hatchet in middle school and a lot of the kids who weren't into reading enjoyed it. I honestly think the hardest part for people who don't like to read I've heard is that they can't visualize what's happening so doing visualizing things between chapters might help. I've also heard that slow readers also get frustrated by the speed of others. This is all just second hand knowledge because I do not experience either of those things. but that is what our conversation has stirred up.

I absolutely love that book and probably have 3-4 on my shelf I totally get that too! My kiddos are at a lower speed mostly, so books that we read as a class I read to them, and I let them each choose a book of their own for open reading time. I definitely found using expression in my voice tends to captivate them and I think is helping them to visualize!

The problem with Hatchet is I believe they read that as required reading last year. I have so many I want to read by Paulsen and even Erdrich but they are all required reading for our school for 6th and 8th-12th. They've had so many 7th grade teachers come and go they don't have much of a list of required (only 2) for them. I teach at a native school so these books are very much used.

Any book suggestions for mystery twists for a 7th grade boy? We read a short story that really captivated him. It was about a bank robber who decided to change his ways.

Ender's Game is by far my favorite book I ever had to read for class in school. It's not a mystery in the sense that there is a crime and a detective but...the twist ending blew my mind as a kid. I ended up reading the rest of the series after as well.

I've literally just signed in to pass on my love for The City of Brass and The Kingdom of Copper I've just bought The Empire of Gold so I will likely be starting it as soon as it arrives but.. Man. SA Chakraborty has written such an amazing trilogy in The Deavabad Series... And the audiobooks are incredible. (on Audible and Scribd at the very least)

Just... Mannn. In love.

Also Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao just came out and its incredible - and Midnight in Everwood by MA Kuzniar comes out next week and is also amazing.
My top two books along with Legendborn of Jan-Sept of this year. Highly reccomend them all.

Hope you are all loving what you are reading! I miss you xx

I love when people come in and just HAVE to recommend a book because they enjoyed it so much!! We are so happy to see you, Tori!

Speaking of - I have been FLYING through the Bridgerton books. I finished the main eight, and now I've been working through the prequel series and after that I believe she has a few more about other families in the London 'ton' scene that I want to read as well. I just fly right through them! They're NOT what I usually go for at all and I'm surprised I like them as much as I do.
