Default Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Series) by Rick Riordan (Sa9+)

As Disney are remaking the Percy Jackson and the Olympians into a TV series on Disney+ (and because I've recently finished the series again for the millionth time), how can we not have a book thread dedicated to the series?

Also, how has there not been one made already?

Do you have a favourite book of the series?

Who is your favourite character and why?

Was there anything that shocked or surprised you?

As always, be aware that there are SPOILERS! in this thread.

Ahhhh!!! I'M SO HAPPY FOR THIS THREAD!

Which is an awesome coincidence because I started re-reading the books last week and I'm already almost done with the second one. :3

I don't think I have a favorite book. I really enjoy Rick Riordan's writing. As for favorite character I have more than one. Annabeth Chase (I mean, come on, how could you NOT like her?), Clarisse La Rue (I know, I know), Nico di Angelo (precious baby), and of course, Percy Jackson.

I first read the series a long time ago and have re-read them as I got older. What I remember surprised me the most back then was the characters that turned against Camp Half-blood. As well as the way Rick Riordan mixed the 'normal' world and his world of Greek gods and goddesses into one. It was relatable to younger-me, and still is.

I’m glad that you’re happy! I couldn’t believe that there wasn’t one when I checked honestly!

I literally finished the first series a month or so back for the millionth time and I figured it was the perfect time to try and get this thread made ::3:

I’m not sure I have a favourite either? Although I do really enjoy the last book a The Last Olympian a lot. SPOILER I love the scene with Percy and Annabeth under water in the air bubble. As for favourite characters, I love Annabeth Chase. She could possibly be my favourite character. How could you not like her exactly! And I just love her banter with Percy. It’s one of my favourite aspects of the book. I also love Dionysus and the way he always gets everyone’s name wrong until right at the end right until the end.

I first got into the series because of the movie actually My brother and I went to the cinema to see the first movie and I did really enjoy it. When I ended up leaving for university though, I wanted some new books and I remembered enjoying the movie so I started reading the series and I just flew through them so quickly and loved them. At that time, The Son of Neptune had just come out so naturally I moved right on to them

As for the campers who left the camp and kind of turned their backs on it, I could believe that. I feel like because of Luke, it was always kind of accepted that more would, for me at least. I loved the way everything mixed but as with Hogwarts, the way authors get around the whole technology issue and how it can ruin plots is always amusing

I actually need to read the rest of the series, I've only ever read the first book. I'm excited they are doing a series for it. I hope they do well.

Going slightly off topic and on topic all at the same time!

I loved the original 5 book series and even the 2nd set when they mixed in the Roman gods. I loved learning more about the characters lives. My favorite book was probably the final book The Last Olympian - was such a great way to end the series.

I love Thalia - they way the brought her back so that there were 2 no competing for the prophecy was just great!!! And they way she chose to end her run in it! So good....

Now to the off topic part! I loved these books - but if you have ever read any of is other series (The ones about the Eyptian gods - or even the ones about Apollo) - they tend to be the same from there on out. (minus one huge death - I won't completely spoil here though because that's technically a different book) - but other than that it's kind of the good guys battle the bad guys and win - sure they loose some of their allies along the way but the main character triumphs.

Me too honestly. I enjoyed the first movie but I was not a fan of the second at all so I'm really interested how they'll do with a series. You can really dig deep and include a lot more detail and develop characters more with a series. You should also read the rest of the series!

I really enjoy both series too honestly! The Last Olympian is also my favourite book in the first series too! I love the ending and
SPOILER!!: SPOILER for the 5th BOOK
part where Annabeth and Percy end up in the bubble in the lake after they get thrown in by the rest of the campers

As for Thalia, I love her character and how she deviated from the prophecy. I love the way that Kronos manoeuvred the parts in his favour throughout the series honestly.

As for the other books...

I haven't read the Egyptian series but I have read a few of the Apollo series! I think I've possibly read book one and two and started book three? Or something like that. I started them while I was working in America and left the books out there for the kids in the summer camp I worked at to read so I don't know where I stand with that series honestly and as for the big death, I have no idea about it?! Or I've forgotten or haven't read the book/Series but you're now making me want to continue with the series.

I just kind of got a little bored with the series after a while and had to take a read. Rick Riordan just continues to pump out these books which is great but it grew a little tedious for me.

I agree - I've read all the Apollo ones since they are kind of a continuation from the first and 2nd set of 5. And I've read the Eyptian ones ... but he's got all kinds more out there and I just kind of over it now. The big death I'm talking about occurs either on Book 3 or 4 of the Apollo series!

I think that one is worth the read to - but mainly because it's just more of the Greek and Roman Gods!

As for the movies .... not going to lie there - I disliked both - I hate that they changed Annabeth! How hard was it to make a girl with blonde hair! Dye it!!! or if you refuse then you aren't right for the part!

Oooooooh okay! I'll have to get back into those books and give it a read because a big death sounds both devastating and interesting. I'm not sure I'll ever read the Egyptian ones though or the Norse god series (even though I own the first book of both )

I mean I think I have a sweet spot for the first movie because I saw the movie before I read the first book and that was how I was introduced to the series. I can 100% see/understand why you'd be annoyed by the small things like that because that's how I feel about the second movie. That and the fact that they moved the main plot up by four books

I'm really excited to see the series because I've heard that he's going to get to be a lot more involved in the filming and decision making process than the last two movies.

I still haven't finished the second series or started Apollo. I am kind of interested in some of the books that he "presents" about other lore such as Indian, African, Native American. Because I believe they are own voices books and that really intrigues me.

I'm not sure I have a favorite book, but I love how the real world is just webbed in so much to the books.
