If You Like This Then You Might Like This

This thread is similar to the Book Recommendations thread, but there’s a twist! Instead of only recommending books to others, you can request for books to be recommended to you based on another book that you enjoy. You can browse the recommendations here.

I want to request! What do I need to do?
  • Include the title, author(s), genre, and rating of a book you what to find similar books for.
  • You can leave it at that, but if you include more details – what it was about the book that you enjoyed (the themes, atmosphere, genre, etc.) – then you increase your chance of getting good recommendations.

What do I need to do if I'm recommending books?
  • If you are giving recommendations in reply to a member’s request, please quote their original post.
  • Include the title, author(s), genre, and rating for every book you recommend.
  • Recommended books should be similar to the requested book in some way. For example, the books could have a similar vibe, atmosphere or plot.
  • You can recommend more books to someone who has already had books recommended to them, but if you notice that someone’s request has no responses, try and find books for them first.

If you have any queries, send them to Harron Peasley, Lissy Longbottom or natekka via PM.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein (Children's Book) 5/5

If you're into children's stories with a moral, how about The Lorax by Dr. Seuss?

Or if you're into children's stories with a lyrical quality, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery?

Hey, guys! I'm thinking about what kind of books I want to read next year, and I'm really interested in some mystery/thriller type novels with tight pacing and clever foreshadowing/plotting. I'm thinking like Da Vinci Code and other Dan Brown books, or JK's Robert Galbraith Cormoran Strike novels... something where the author is actually being clever and it's super fun to read.

I do NOT need great character building (see the fact that I already referenced Dan Brown) but really really good plotting. Any suggestions?

Have you read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson? Or Into the Woods by Tana French?

I am interested in every story that isn’t only romance.

I HAVE read the first one (although not the newest one that was written by a different author), and the second one is on my TBR list. I'll look into picking it up!

For the second book in the log:

The Magician’s Nephew by CS Lewis (High Fantasy Novel) 5/5

*Traditional good vs evil themes are not exactly what I like in stories, but I did like how we got insight as to why the evil side is as the way they are.

Ooh, I love this genre of books. In the last few years, I've been reading a lot of thrillers and mysteries as e-books from the library.

Have you read Gentlemen & Players by Joanne Harris? I absolutely adore that book. It's a great psychological thriller with a tight plot; it reminds me of a Chris Nolan film. It was definitely the best book I've ever picked up at a garage sale.

Other recommendations for you, Ern: Anything by Liane Moriarty (author of Big Little Lies [though that's not even her best work]; she has a good sense of humor that comes across in her thrillers) and Gillian Flynn (Sharp Objects, Gone Girl).

Let me know if you read any of these!

I'll add those! Thanks, Ro. I've read Gone Girl and Dark Places by Flynn, and those definitely get toward what I'm looking for. They're a little more... character twists than plotty goodness twists, but those amount to the same sort of satisfaction when reading.

I might suggest The Basic Eight; Daniel Handler’s debut novel. Something about his prose always strikes a chord with me.
