Default Holiday Gifts

With Halloween behind us, our attentions have turned to the holiday season ahead. And what better gift to give (and receive!) than a book?

Whether it's books you know everyone will love, to ones for more niche audiences, what books do you think make great gifts? What books have you been gifted and what did you think of them?

Discuss away!
This discussion should be kept SPOILER FREE.

Can I tell you what may NOT be a great gift? Unless you know the person well enough to know how it will be taken????

I had a friend gift me with "100 Days to Brave" this week, and while I know her heart is in the right place, being gifted a self help book really just feels like commentary on the things you don't like about your friends and loved ones. LOL

^ OPE! Lol what a gift-giving fail!

The best books I was given as a gift were the Harry Potter books. I got the first three for Christmas as a kid and then one would come out around my birthday every year, so that was something I HAD to have. I was a real proud owner of those books, y'know?

Now I get cookbooks as gifts and I've never turned my nose up at any of them, not even that Reese Witherspoon one that is full of easy recipes like deviled eggs and chicken salad.

I got the "Lockwood & Co." series by Jonathan Stroud. It's an 11+ or so five-book series about teenage ghost hunters. IDK it's really good. Well written. It's a dystopian series but at the same time there's quite a lot of humor. I loved it and have been trying to talk my family into reading them. It think it would be great for most people.

I have never received a book as a gift welp (so maybe one of you should give me one lol). But I have given book as a gift to some friends, a little bit tricky though.

1. For my first friend, it was back in 2015 and I gave her this local family fiction about dad who made videotapes on his dying days for his future kiddos and she loved it.

2. For my second friend (who also my best friend). I gave her Gone Girl and... I'm not sure if she enjoyed it tbh. But I was obsessed with it.

3. Recently I decided to give a friend The Little Prince just because she seemed like a person who enjoyed classics and thankfully, she Loved it!

Ern, along with that another big no is self help with marriage. I was given a book as a gift once from someone not married about how to help make your marriage the best. Like, ummm, what? I think books like that should be maybe recommended by close friends, but never a gift.

I love book exchanges because sometimes you get books you will never just go out and buy. Two of my favorites was When Good Friends Go Bad and The Maze Runner Series.

Getting books as gifts has always been Erik's speciality during christmas time. He got me a book one year We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. That book was so depressing once you figured out the ending. I don't mind getting books as gifts because sometimes picking up unexpected novels can leave a huge impact on you.

I have always gotten books for Christmas, so I've had my fair share of good & bad books. The best one I have ever gotten is the books of poems by Lang Leav and Michael Faudet; while the worst one has been "Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office"

Ironically both gifts were given by my boyfriend. So I don't think he got any better at choosing books for me over the years.

Oh. My. Merlin. A self help book sounds like such an awkward gift. I think you're right, you'd have to be really confident that that was something they WANTED. I don't think I could buy them one unless someone asked for it. D:

Harry Potter was my birthday gift when I was 6 or 7! The first four - it was definitely one of my favourite childhood gifts.

Cookbooks are a go to gift for my mum and baking ones for my cousin. Though sometimes I'm not sure which ones they don't have.

This actually sounds really interested, and like a good idea for one of my sisters this year (which I will, of course, borrow).

I HOPE your friend liked Gone Girl. I love that book, it was SUCH a rollercoaster. So well thought out.

ERM. that is just rude and weird imo. I agree that it's not a very appropriate gift.

Getting books you never would have chosen for yourself and loving them is always a great thing. And the Maze Runner books were a favourite of mine, too - although I bought them for one of my sisters and she's never read them because, "well, I didn't like the film". And trying to explain to her that they are SO MUCH better than the films was like talking to a wall.

It's so true - some of the books I never would have picked for myself are ones that I think about all of the time. Does Erik get you books he's read before?

It's amusing that he's managed to get you both the best and the worst of your book gifts.
