Default Favourite Characters in Books

Who is your favourite character from a book that you have read?

Perhaps you still love a character from that book you read as a child? Or you found a new favourite lately in a recent read.

Tells us all about them! What made them so gripping? Has y our favourite character changed? Do you have more than one?!

Wait, I want to bogart this thread because I want to ask about people's favorite SLEUTH. Like I LOVE a good mystery novel, and I find it so interesting that some novels feature a law enforcement figure, someone formally trained who it makes SENSE to have solving mysteries, but sometimes you have a fun take on the genre, and the sleuth is a little old lady or a librarian or a baker or a cat.

So I want to know who your favorite sleuth is, or even just if you prefer a 'detective' or a rando with the bad luck of constantly tripping over dead people.

No one answered my question from 6 months ago, so Imma ask another one. What's a character you find to be similar to you? And do you like that character or dislike them?

I am going to answer both your questions and ask you to answer them as well!

If you haven't picked up the Blood Secret Series by Alicia Anthony, DO IT! Ridge is my favorite, but it takes awhile in the series for it to come through. Liv, another character would rank up there as well!

I don't know if I have ever had a character jump out like me... So I'm not fully sure on that one, I'll have to think about it for a moment.

I love unusual sleuth books, Ali. Like 'usual' sleuths are constrained by rules and are usually written 'hard boiled' and cynical, so it's nice to follow a little old lady or a rule breaking regency era lord or the local librarian instead.

Although that does sometimes lead to a stretch of believability... why in the world would someone who isn't professionally solving mysteries motivated to be so infernally nosy that they put themself into danger over and over to solve a mystery?

I got ramble-y. Anyway, for characters like me, I guess I was wondering if maybe characters that I don't like in books are characters that reflect back my worst qualities to me? But maybe I am being a grump? I don't know that I find characters to be too much like me, but I see qualities that are familiar or that I can empathize with.

I don't read any sleuth-y books, so I'm wondering if this means I ought to give it a go. Let me know if you've got any recs for a new-to-sleuth reader, ern! I'll be looking into that one you mentioned, Ali.

Reflecting on this^ though, I think I might feel the same sort of way. I know that my favorite characters tend to be the ones I find to be my complete opposite, so I'm wondering if the converse of this might be true when thinking about the ones I dislike. I do think, to some degree, the ones that I dislike often stem from projections of my own insecurities? Which might not be that same sort of deal that your point mentioned, actually...

One of my biggest qualms / most common complaints with characters I tend to dislike (for example, the one that comes to the forefront of my mind in this regard is Peeta from The Hunger Games trilogy) is that they're "too perfect" or "too nice" - Maybe that stems from a place of thinking I'll never be able to be that? And then projecting that onto the character and getting angry with them for being what I can't? Or maybe I'm just overthinking it now - I shouldn't try to think Big Thoughts after 11PM, it never ends well for me.
