First Year

#19: Wand

I stepped into Ollivander’s shop, looking around imperiously. Shelves stood on all sides.

“Hello, Mrs. Black.” An old man came towards us, a tight smile stretched across his face as he peered down at me. “Your daughter, Narcissa?” He asked Mother.

She nodded curtly. “Narcissa needs a wand.”

In no time, I’d found a wand that suited me: black and twelve inches long.

A pale boy with sharp features strode in. Our eyes met for a moment, but the gaze was broken when Mother ushered me out the door. I could still feel his eyes on me when we exited.

#25: Sorting Hat

My heart was thumping. Everyone in my family had been a Slytherin. What if I wasn’t chosen to be in the best of four houses?

Don’t worry. I’m a true Slytherin, down to the core, I told myself.

When Professor McGonagall called “Black, Narcissa,” I strolled confidently to the tattered hat.

“Slytherin!” the Hat cried just as the brim touched me. Smiling, I walked to the Slytherin table where I was greeted with tremendous applause.

The pale boy I’d seen before, “Malfoy, Lucius,” stepped up soon after. I saw a contented smirk on his face when the hat yelled, “Slytherin!”

#32: Common Room

“First years, this way!” a husky voice ordered. A tall fifth year waved his burly hand for us to follow.

I felt myself being jostled this way and that. My eyes roamed everywhere as we made our way to the Slytherin common room down below.

When the prefect opened the dungeon door for us, I could hear the entire group of first years gasp. It was grand! A sizzling fire was set in the middle. Deep green sofas decorated the interior.

“Make yourselves at home,” the prefect told us. “Girl dormitories are on the left, boys are on the right.”

Third Year

#33: Classroom

“Look at this bookshelf…let’s trash it!”

“This looks breakable…”

CRASH.

The room was chaotic. This was our very first class this year. All third year Slytherins had reached the classroom first; we wanted to waste the place before a professor arrived.

Soon, the classroom was in disarray. Telescopes were broken, desks warped, and books torn.

Lucius was in the center of it all. He was shoving, pushing, throwing…everything imaginable. He did this all with graceful ease. As I stood and examined the mess while fixing my hair, my eyes kept drifting back to him, admiring his talent for trouble making.

#84: Angry

“What is the meaning of this?!?” A manly but shrill voice pierced our laughter.

Our professor, a skinny man with a blue cloak, swept into the room, examining the damage. “This is preposterous! You all should know better.” A vein was pulsing in his temple. “Detention for all of you. You will clean this place up until it is the way it was before.” Huffing, he started scribbling on the board and assigned us two essays, each three feet long.

My eyes met with Lucius’ and he curled his lip, rolling his eyes at the teacher. I turned away, laughing.

#23: Telescope

It had been about a month since the memorable riot and all of our detentions had been served. However, an order had been placed for more telescopes in the Astronomy tower as we had broken many of them.

As a result, we had to share the devices, which was extremely aggravating. Lucius was my assigned partner and he took forever to focus the lenses! I ended up doing most of it. He mainly sat back and relaxed, eyeing me with those steel blue eyes. I didn’t really mind, to tell you the truth, because he was so hopelessly good looking.

#8: Potions

“Welcome to another potions class,” Professor Slughorn greeted us as we marched into class. “Today we will be mixing a complicated substance, so read the directions carefully.” He flicked his wand at the board and the instructions appeared. “This is individual work,” he added, giving a couple of Slytherins a knowing look.

Soon the room was filled with the clatter of stirring rods, cauldrons, and smelled thickly of fresh moss. Wrinkling my nose, I daintily stirred my potion. It was okay, although it was lime green instead of forest green. I sighed, glimpsing over at Lucius’. Perhaps he could help.

#17: Cauldron

“Hey, Lucius, mind giving me a bit of help?” I asked under my breath, letting a whine edge into my voice. I batted my eyelashes for an extra effect.

Lucius stole a glance at me. “Do it yourself.” His eyebrows were cocked as he pretended he didn’t hear me.

I gave an exasperated puff. Why wouldn’t he help me? Then I noticed that his friends were listening. Of course he was mean when they were around!

Mixing my cauldron furiously, I accidentally banged my jar of flies into it. With a crash, it fell to the floor. Oh, why me?

#63: Mooch

“Do it, Lucius,” I heard sly whispering behind me. “Show her how the mooching’s done. Just grab it!”

I hurried my walk as I turned the corner, flocked by my fellow Slytherin girl friends. They whispered excitably to me. “Lucius totally likes to flirt with you,” they giggled, peering over their shoulders.

“Do you think so?” I asked, my interest very keen now.

They nodded and chuckled some more.

As if timed, Lucius stuck out his hand and clutched my school bag. With an almighty pull, he took it from my grasp and sprinted away. “Catch me if you can!”

#53: Chase

I followed my first instinct and did what he wanted me to do; I ran after him. “Come back here, you git!” I shrieked, feeling the air rush past me. My long, slender legs did me justice as I chased him around corners, through hallways, and up stairs.

Lucius turned around from a distance off, sticking his tongue out. “Girls can’t run as fast as boys can, admit it!” Then he continued his run.

Gritting my teeth, I followed behind him closely. I was gaining on him, but he didn’t know that. Just a bit more and I’d have him…

#69: Slap

I was getting closer…close enough that I could smell the rich aroma that Lucius always had about him, close enough to touch a strand of his hair, close enough to…

SLAP!

“Give it back to me right now, Malfoy!” I thundered after I hit him hard on the back of his head. I was used to getting my way and he was not making things easy for me.

“Argh, what was that for?” he groaned, clutching his head. I took the opportunity to tear my bag from his fingers. Even though I was furious, I felt a twinge of remorse.

#60: Joke

My torment from Lucius did not end there. The next day I suppose he decided that pulling another joke on me wouldn’t hurt.

I was walking out of Charms class when he came up to me, a sly look on his thin face. “Hey, Narcissa, look at this.”

Stupidly, I looked up, only to gain a blast of water from the tip of his wand. He cackled mischievously at my appearance, but when I didn’t say anything, he flicked his wand lazily and the water instantly dried up.

“I just like to see your expression, Narcissa,” he sneered, sauntering away.

#54: Dare

I had long given up on liking Lucius because that boy was extremely annoying. My friends kept telling me it was his way to get attention from me, but if it was, why was he being so stupid about it? I decided it was because he was a thirteen-year-old boy.

This particular afternoon most of the Slytherins (the ones worthy to sit with, anyways) were outside, basking in the warm summer weather. Lucius was sitting on the grass.

“Narcissa,” he called. “I dare you to jump into the lake and touch the Giant Squid.”

“In your dreams,” I shot back.

#55: Egg on

He raised an eyebrow. “If I didn’t know you I would think you were scared.”

My temper instantly flared. “I’m not scared!”

“Prove it.”

Throwing off my black robes and not caring whether I got my school shirt and skirt dirty, I ambled to the side of the lake.

My friends were very interested now and looked up from their magazines. “Prove him wrong!” They cheered.

“You can’t do it,” Lucius hissed cunningly as I stared over my toes at the water rippling beneath. My pulse was beating faster now. The dark waters were giving me second thoughts about this.

#86: Daring

I had to do it. I would face more humiliation if I backed down. Squeezing my eyes shut, I felt a daring emotion shoot through me. It was a feeling that prompted me, pushing me to go beyond my comfort zone.

I dived. The water was surprisingly warm. When I opened my eyes, I could only see blurs. Then I saw it; it was unmistakably the squid.

Swimming closer so that I was only about an inch away, I reached out a single finger. Holding my breath, I gently brushed a tentacle and swam away as fast as I could.

#72: Vex

There was no one more vexing than Lucius Malfoy. For instance, today in class he was making these totally stupid faces at me, trying to get me to laugh. When he only succeeded in making my friends giggle, he stopped, thankfully.

The next class, he started prodding me in the back with his quill feather. When I couldn’t take it anymore, I turned around and growled, “Stop it!” This was in vain as it resulted in me nearly getting detention.

When he set his foot on one of my desk’s back legs and started shaking his foot, I had it.

#59: Ignore

Here I was in class, shaking in my desk because some Slytherin git was trying to win me over. Boys. Would they ever learn?

All I could do (I didn’t want detention) was grit my teeth and ignore his antics. This proved to be extremely hard as he was very good at being a nuisance. He reverted back to the back poking and when that didn’t work, he started shaking again.

“Are you trying to ignore me?” he whispered in my ear when the professor was looking away.

I muttered through clenched teeth, “As a matter of fact, I am.”

#73: Warn

“I’m warning you, Malfoy, if you keep doing that I’m going to…to…” I trailed off.

“What are you going to do? Throw me into the lake?” he spoke in an undertone. “I highly doubt it. You couldn’t hurt me if you wanted to.”

“Well, I’ll do something that you would regret,” I threatened lamely.

Snorting, he murmured, “Yeah right,” and turned back to his notes.

Somehow, in the depths of my heart, I knew I wouldn’t do anything either. Maybe there was a tiny part of me that liked him despite his flaws, but just didn’t want to admit it.

#95: Snowball

Snowflakes were drifting down about me, traveling in intricate swirls that tucked under my scarf and the folds of my jacket.

“Oh, here he comes again,” I muttered to them, nodding to Lucius accompanied with his pals.

“He totally likes you,” one of my friends stated. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he threw a snowball at you.”

I still blame her to this day for saying that, for at that moment, Lucius rolled up a loose snowball and whizzed it at me. It splattered on my jacket front.

“Lucius!” I groaned, but laughed despite of myself, reaching for some snow.

Fourth Year

#2: Muggle Studies

“As you know, Muggles are very different from wizards,” our professor said in a high-pitched voice. “In wars, they used different devices instead of wands, such as guns.”

I looked a few seats over and spotted Lucius drawing several wizards dueling. Chuckling, I concentrated back on the professor.

“They also had different battle tactics; in one war they were situated in trenches. Class, who can tell me more differences between…”

I drifted away from her talk and stole a few glances at Lucius’ face, which was bent over the parchment. He was a much more interesting topic than Muggle wars.

#99: Newspaper

Reading the newspaper depressed me, much less the Muggle newspaper. I cursed Muggle Studies as I flipped through pages describing transportation difficulties and mothering tips. “How can Muggles be so dimwitted?” I muttered. At this rate, I was never going to find anything to base my report on.

“It’s just how they’re made, Narcissa,” a sleek voice answered from across the quiet common room. Lucius was lounging on a sofa, picking through a heavy volume.

“Finally, something we agree on,” I commented lightly, turning back to the black and white pages of monotony. “I mean, the pictures don’t even move!”

#100: Homework

Lucius slowly closed his book. “You know, I finished my Muggle Studies report ages ago. Piece of cake. Actually, most homework is.”

I raised an eyebrow, not impressed. “Thanks for making me feel loads better.”

“Well, I could always help you if you wanted,” he said offhandedly, examining a hangnail.

“Will you?” I was slightly disbelieving of this sudden generosity. It was shocking when he got up from his lazy position to assist me.

An hour later, when I finished my homework with no payments needing to be made, my view of Lucius had begun to shift ever so slightly.

#75: Yodel

“What in the world are they doing out there?” one of my Slytherin roommates complained, scowling. She swaggered to the door and opened it. Loud yodeling met my ears.

“Are they having a contest again?” I muttered, closing my eyes as another friend applied eye shadow. “Can’t they let us have a makeover in peace?”

My roommate rolled her eyes. “Obviously not. Maybe later we should go out there in our fancy outfits and tell them to stop.”

It was unanimously agreed, so we slipped on our dresses (must have one in the wardrobe at all times) and peeked out.

#58: Hoot

The moment we stepped out into the common room, the yodeling ceased. It was replaced with howls, hoots, whistles, and every call imaginable: the appreciation sounds of Slytherin males.

My friend who had opened the door walked out, hips swinging. “Narcissa Black!” she announced, pulling me from behind the door.

They roared their approval. Lucius hooted several times. Somehow his stood out more than the others’ did.

As she ‘introduced’ all the other girls and everyone started mingling, Lucius pulled me aside. He studied me. “I like it,” he murmured in my ear. As he slunk past, he hooted quietly.

#76: Zap

ZAP!

Screams and yells erupted from the area around the fireplace, making me jump out of my skin.

“What happened here?” I pushed through the crowd of Slytherins. My eyes widened as I took the spectacle in. One of them was on fire!

Some Slytherins ran to fetch some liquid to douse the flames.

“What happened?” I screeched. Goyle was standing there looking dumbly at the Slytherin on fire. I turned on him, my gaze icy and fiery at the same time.

“Uh…I don’t know. I used my wand…and then I zapped him. Pretty funny actually…” he chortled to himself.
