■■ 31. Orchideous

Hermione sat on the couch in the common room reading a book while Harry slaved over his latest Herbology assignment. “I told you to finish it the other day,” she scoffed turning the page in her book with a very ‘I told you so’ expression written all over her face.

Before Harry could respond, Ron came bursting through the portrait looking like he had seen a ghost, that, or his wand had backfired again and he was going to be puking up slugs at any moment. In his right hand was a bouquet of daises that looked like they had been thrown against a wall several times.

“Ron? What’s wrong with you?” Harry asked setting his parchment down on the ground.

“You look awful,” Hermione said as she guided him to the couch.

“It-i-i-it was her…she was just walking…and…I-I-I conjured some flowers to g-g-give her…” Ron stammered looking like he really was going to lose his lunch. “I-I-I gave them to her, you know, seeing as her birthday is coming up and all…and sh-sh-sh-she…threw them at me. Well, actually, at the wall first…”

“Fleur,” Harry and Hermione said rolling their eyes.

■■ 45. Tarantallegra

Flipping through the program, Hermione tried to remember every detail of the performance and felt like she had done the right thing in insisting that the Weasleys attend the muggle entertainment. Still, she couldn’t help but feel that Mr. Weasley was very upset about something as he hunched over the steering wheel of the car with his lips pressed so tightly together that she thought they were going to split.

“Ron, why is your father so upset?” she asked in a low whisper. “Come to think of it, why were you, Fred, and George all laughing during the performance? That was rather…rude.”

“Hermione,” Ron said still laughing. “It’s obvious isn’t it? There is no such thing as a Riverdance! Those were all wizards under the Tarantallegra jinx. That’s why dad is so ticked.”

“That’s not true! The performance is purely skill!” she snapped folding her arms across her chest. “Totally uncalled for.”

“Right, sure, whatever.”

“You know, that spell’s name comes from a dance originating in Italy where it was believed that to cure the effects of the bite of a Tarantula the victim to sweat out the toxin,” Hermione teased.

“Now THAT was uncalled for,” Ron whimpered.

■■ 3. Braking Charm

Ron squirmed around uncomfortably in his seat as Cormac weaseled his way between himself and Hermione. Leaning around him, Hermione glanced at Ron not so much out of concern, but to see just how agitated he was and was pleased to see that he looked like a cross between Snape every time he looked at Harry and a mandrake screaming.

“So, Granger, did you know that I am trying out for the Quidditch team? With reflexes like mine, it would be silly for me not to be a member of it,” Cormac said flicking his eyes towards Harry for a moment before resting his gaze on Ron. He reached out an arm to put around Hermione, but she ducked out of the way just in time.

“Delightful,” Hermione groaned through a smile as she focused on keeping her gaze on her own dessert as if it were the most fascinating thing in the world. “Shouldn’t you be getting ready for tryouts?” She glance across the table at Harry hoping he would say something, but Harry merely shook his head and looked away.

“You’re right,” he smiled walking away.

“I hope his Braking Charm breaks his neck,” Ron hissed.

■■ 18. Incarcerous

Everyone had been telling her that she, of all people, had nothing to worry about. But, she couldn’t help it. She had standards to live up to, very high standards that she had set for herself. There was a reason why Professor McGonagall gave her permission in her third year to use a time turner in order to attend extra classes after all.

Sitting on her bed, she heard a loud screeching and look her window just in time to see a brown barn owl approaching her window. Jumping up, Hermione rushed to the window, threw it open, and practically caught the bird mid flight. Hooting with surprise, the owl dropped the letter it was carrying and it fluttered to the ground.

“My results!” she squeaked releasing the bird and pounding on the parchment. Taking a deep breath, she opened it up and began to read.
Ancient Runes … Outstanding
Arithmancy …Outstanding
Astronomy …Outstanding
Care of Magical Creatures … Outstanding
Charms … Outstanding

Defense Against the Dark Arts…

She felt like someone had cast Incarcerous on her and the ropes were bound so tightly that she could hardly breathe.

■■ 33. Point Me

this drabble is dedicated to all those effected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. May you all find peace and hope

Thinking about the task ahead of them, Hermione felt utterly helpless and lost. Sure, she had been preparing and packing for weeks knowing full well that they could be flung into their seemingly impossible mission at any moment, but the reality of all it suddenly came crashing down.

Looking across the room at Ron and Harry. who both lay on the couch passed out from the chores Mrs. Weasley had been making them do in preparation for the wedding, a timid smile tickled the edges of her lips. Would they return to these peaceful times? Would there come a time when they did not have to live in fear of some Death Eater or Voldemort himself?

Now was the time for them all to combine their powers and unite. Not just the three of them, but the entire wizarding world. Feeling as though she had cast a Four-Point Spell on her own heart, Hermione knew what she had to do. She knew that she was no longer lost. She knew that as long as they had hope and each other that they would be able to return to these happy times and rebuild whatever they had lost.

■■ 47. Twitchy Ears Hex

Hermione did not like the look Fred and George were giving Crookshanks. The pair of them had been eying the feline for several hours now as they sat in 12 Grimmauld Place waiting for the Order meeting to finish and for Mrs. Weasley to call them all down for supper. Hermione had been reading the most recent Daily Prophet and had a look of utter disgust on her face as her eyes feel on each word. Aimlessly, she reached her hand out and began petting Crookshank’s large ears.

“Do you gather it really would work?” Fred asked his brother jabbing him in the side with his elbow.

“I reckon it would,” George nodded.

“What are you two going on about?” Hermione asked looking over the top of the paper.

The twins looked at one another and large smirks spread across their faces. Hermione wrinkled her nose. The two of them looking pleased with themselves was never a good thing.

“We were just wondering if Crookshanks would be able to fly with his ears if we used a Twitchy Ears Hex on him.”

■■ 8. Diffindo

Honestly! What was that woman thinking calling her shriveled like an old book?!

Hermione had never been so angry in her entire life – except for that time that Draco had called her a Mudblood and pretty much every time he looked at her – and it clearly showed in her body language as she went stomping down the stairs from the Divination classroom.

She is nothing but an old fraud who enjoys predicting students’ doom for her own amusement!

And to think, she had actually used her timeturner to attend this ridiculous class. What had she been thinking? Better she stick with a more civilized class, like Arithmancy. That was not only a fascinating subject, but it was logical.

Glaring at one of the moving portraits that laughed at her as she stormed through the moving staircases towards Gryffindor’s common room, she had to bit her lip from taking out her wand and slashing it into pieces with magic.

“The subject is wolly and farfetched guesswork anyway,” she grumbled deciding to instead turned the portrait on its side and causing its contents to jumble around.

■■ 12. Furnunculus

“Come on Heriome,” Fred pouted shoving his lower lip out exceptionally far.

“Ginny hasn’t been herself for days,” George frowned.

“I still don’t see what this has to do with me,” Hermione said eying the both of them with her arms folded across her chest. She was just as worried about Ginny as they were. She had looked awful for weeks, almost as if the very life were being drained from her, when she should be full of life and curiosity as a first year.

“We can’t very well perform the spell on ourselves,” George explained.

“Boils would be popping puss all over the place and the other would have to perform the spell on himself. The common room would be a right mess,” Fred concurred resting his elbow on Hermione’s shoulder.

“So…you’re asking me to essentially hex the both of you?” Hermione said raising an eyebrow. “I still don’t see what this has to do with Ginny.”

“Ginny will think it is hilarious that we are popping all over the place and cheer up,” Fred said.

Sighing, Hermione knew there was no getting out of this despite it breaking a dozen school rules. “Fine, I’ll do it.”

■■ 23. Levicorpus

Walking through the corridors with several large books in hand on her way to the library, Hermione secretly hoped that she would met Ron and perhaps try to patch things up with him. Turning the corner, she stopped in her tracks when she saw Ron and…her…snogging in the middle of the bloody hallway. Was there a school rule against this sort of behavior? If not, there should be as it was distracting her from her studies.

Enraged, Hermione stomped forward a few steps and tripped on some uneven cobblestone which caused her to drop her books. She heard Lavender let out one of her piercing squeaks that she sometimes thought only dogs should be able to hear and her eyes locked on the girl ready to hex her into next week if she was laughing at her.

Fuming even more that the couple hadn’t heard the crashing of her books to the floor and therefore were completely oblivious to her existence, Hermione very much had the desire to cast Levisorpus on Ron. Perhaps down by the Black Lake or the Whomping Willow. That way, some sense would get beaten into him one way or another.

■■ 44. Stupefy

Hermione looked nervously to her right where Ron was standing holding his wand in his hand. She then looked forward at Harry, who they had attached several large pillow to using the Sticking Charm, and frowned.

“Are you sure about this, Harry?” she asked looking down at her own wand.

“Yeah, yeah, I am,” Harry said swallowing hard. “I’ve got to know this stuff for the task, right?”

Hermione looked at Ron and then back at her wand. Harry had quick reflexes and they had taken proper precautions to make sure that Harry didn’t hurt himself with the final task looming in just a few days. There always was the chance for accidents to happen and for Harry to spend the rest of his term in the hospital wing.

“Alright, give it a go,” Harry encouraged.

Hermione took out her wand and gave it a quick flick. “Stupefy!”

Before Harry even had time to blink, her spell hit him square in the chest and flung him into the wall.

“Bloody hell, Hermione,” Ron gawked. “We are supposed to be helping him practice not killing him.”

“Alright, yeah, brilliant,” Harry said struggling to get up because of all the pillows.

■■ 7. Confundus

“For Merlin’s sake Ronald,” Hermione said feeling so frustrated with him that her head was beating like a drum and she was having a hard time seeing straight. Why did he have to be so difficult when it came to these matters?

“What? It’s not my fault that he is only using you for your brains,” Ron said folding his arms across his chest and getting defensive. “I, well, I think there are people better suited for you.”

Hermione’s eyes lit up at Ron’s words. Was this it? Was this the moment that he was finally going to tell her what she had been suspecting all along?

“Really?” she asked without a tone of sarcasm in her voice.

“Yeah, even Neville is better than him.”

Head pounding again, Hermione jumped to her feet and looked down at Ron.

“Why can’t you just admit that you like me and that I like you?” she shouted. Ron immediately turned red and Hermione reached for her wand. Not like this… “Confundo.”

Ron’s eyes went a bit hazy and he began to sway so much that he fell of the couch and hit his head on an end table.

“Sorry…” she whispered.

■■ 17. Imperio

If Snape’s lesson during their third year about werewolves was any indication to his teaching technique, Hermione knew that they were in trouble. He had essentially spent the entire time telling them to turn to page 394 and then had called her an insufferable know-it-all – which she was still upset about. All she had done was answer his questions about werewolves.

“Can anyone tell me the difference between the Imperio Curse and the Confundus Charm?” he said turning his pointy nose to the class.

Hermione’s hand shot up and was noted by Snape, who chose to ignore her. Groaning under her breath, Hermione kept her hand held steady in the air.

“Fine…if you must, Miss Granger.”

“Both spells make the caster capable of controlling the victim to some extent, but Confundus doesn't impose a command in the victims mind and is much easier to detect than Imperio. Furthermore, Imperio is one of the Unforgivable Curses whereas Confundus is a charm.”

“Yes,” Snape sneered. “Both spells meddle with a person’s will by making them helpless. It is not only Unforgivable Curses you must ready yourselves for.”

Hermione was surprised. It actually sounded like he cared about them.

■■ 37. Relashio

“Crookshanks! Please, give it back!” Hermione snapped running around the common room chasing her cat who had some parchment hanging from his mouth.

“See, even he knows that writing an essay for Snape is a waste of time. He never gives anyone in Gryffindor full marks,” Ron yawned flopping down on the sofa and observing her feeble attempts at getting her paper back.

“Everyone except Hermione,” Harry corrected as he attempted to get the cat caught in a corner.

Crookshanks looked back and forth between the two and then over at Ron who had semed to have fallen asleep on the couch. Hermione looked over her shoulder, saw this, and rolled her eyes.

“And he calls Scabbers worthless,” she muttered.

Realizing that she was going to have to take drastic matters, she pulled out her wand and pointed it at the cat. “Crookshanks, I’m really sorry about this,” she sighed. “Relashio!”

Sparks flying everywhere, the cat jumped a few feet into the air, dropped the parchment, and ran up the stairs to the girl’s dormitory. Relieved to have her assignment back, Hermione reached for it as it fluttered to the ground…and fluttered right smack in the fireplace.

“MY ESSAY!”

■■ 41. Scourgify

Study Hall was one of Hermione’s favorite times of the day. Not only did everyone have to be quiet and do their work, it also gave her an excuse to read without certain people telling her that she was reading too much. She glanced to her right to see Ron essentially asleep with his nose pressed flat against the pages of his Charms book. To her left, Harry was reading Quidditch Through the Ages.

“Don’t you think you ought to be studying for your O.W.L’s?” she asked.

“Hermione, we can’t all be insane like you,” Ron said not moving his head an inch.

“Look what we have here, a deadbeat Weasley and a Mudblood studying together. I suppose you are reading Weasley a bedtime story then, Potter,” came the slimy voice of Malfoy as he approached their table.

“Go away, Malfoy,” hissed Harry.

“Oh, really scary, Potter. You ought to try saying the same to a dementor sometime.” He glanced back at Hermione. “And make better friends than with Mudbloods.”

Hermione, thinking Malfoy could use a good mouth wash with all the dirty things he was saying, cast Sourgify on him and soon he was spitting out soap bubbles.

■■ 4. Blasting Curse

Carrying a few grocery bags in her hands, Hermione made her way up the hill leading to her home in central London. She checked over her shopping list again to make sure that she had gotten everything – including those turkey sausages that Ron had been begging her to get from the small meat market on the corner of the street.

Just as she reached the front steps, she heard several loud explosions.

No…those weren’t coming from her home…were they?!

Dropping the bags on the ground next to the front door, Hermione rushed into the living room where the noise was the strongest to see Ron waving his wand around and completely demolishing the room in the process. She was going to strangle him. She really was.

“What are you doing?!” she shrieked watching him in utter disbelief.

“I am trying to get this ruddy cockroach,” he grunted hurtling another spell towards the sofa which then erupted into a shower of cotton and feathers.

“By demolishing the house?”

Hermione folded her arms and began tapping her foot in agitation.

“Well, it keeps running away!”

■■ 19. Jelly Legs

Her lower lip trembled and Ron began flailing his arms around for lack of knowing what else to do. She hated when he did that. It never made the situation and better and actually stressed her out due to his knack for smacking her in the face.

“It’s no big deal, Hermione,” Harry said getting up from his spot on the grass. “Loads of people are a bit frazzled from class.” Including himself since Professor Lupin had stepped in front of his boggart and ended class.

“But…she…she…she told me I failed…EVERYTHING!” Hermione whimpered as her frizzy hair appeared to have gained ten times the volume due to stress.

“And you did brilliantly casting Riddikulus afterwards,” Harry encouraged as Ron continued to panic over Hermione’s tears.

Hermione tried to stand up, but her legs wobbled like she had been hit with a strong Jelly-Legs Jinx and had to fall back on the couch. She realized that it had just been a class exercise, but the very idea of actually failing classes was enough for her to be thrown into a panic.

“I’m going to the library,” she said suddenly grabbing her bag and marching out of the common room.

■■ 34. Protego

Hermione hadn’t been paying attention when the flap of the tent opened and let some of the cold air in. Shivering, she pulled her jacket up tighter around her neck. She was about to tell Harry that she hadn’t found anything new, when her voice caught and she felt a rush of ecstasy when she saw Ron standing before her.

Slowly, she walked over to him and felt a wave of emotion like she had never felt before. Then, Ron smile, and that heavenly feeling completely left her body and all that remained was rage and hurt.

“Ronald Weasley!” she shrieked as she pounded her fists against him. Every hit harder than the last, just like each day, no, each moment had been since he’d left. She looked at Ron and her rage spread through her entire body. Her eyes glared at Harry as he made movement towards her. If he didn’t want to be hexed too, he better stay away. Speaking of which, where was her wand?

Sounding like his voice came from some distant land, Hermione only registered what Harry had said when she found herself crumbled in a ball on the floor.

■■ 39. Sectumsempra
{ April Fools } mini challenge

Glancing out the window, Hermione wondered just how much longer it was going to take for Ron and Harry to finish getting ready. Fred and George came down the stairs from the boy’s dormitory with mischievous looks on their faces that could only mean one thing – they were up to something.

The twins spotted Hermione, glanced sideways at each other, and continued on their way out of the common room.

Hermione, still sitting on the couch, looked up to the boy’s dormitory just in time to see Harry come running down the stairs with a look of horror on his face.

“Hermione! It’s terrible!” he wailed waving his arms around frantically.

Seeing the obvious connection between Harry and the twin’s faces, she knew he was up to something.

“What happened,” she scoffed.

“You know that spell in my potion’s book? I tried it…on Ron…”

Hermione’s nostrils flared and there came a loud groan from the stairwell. Hermione looked up to see Ron covered in red.

“Her-mi-one…” Ron whimpered before collapsing.

Hermione’s face went white and she fainted. Ron jumped to his feet and liked some of the red from his hands.

“This ketchup stuff is pretty good.” Ron mused.

■■ 49. Wingardium Leviosa

Hermione brushed back a lock of frizzy hair from her face as she dipped her quill in her inkwell. A crumbled piece of parchment rolled across the desk and stopped on the very spot she was about to continue her essay on. Looking up, she saw that it was Ron who had thrown it and she rolled her eyes before tossing the parchment into a rubbish bin.

She set back to writing her essay when another piece of parchment rolled across her parchment. Looking up again, she saw that Ron was watching her as she picked up the parchment. He even whimpered a bit as she threw it in the rubbish bin. If he bothered him so much, he should really just throw it away himself.

For the third time, Hermione tried to return to her essay when yet another rolled up piece of parchment appeared in front of her. “For Merlin’s sake, Ron,” she groaned picking up the paper and throwing it back at him. “Throw your own parchment away.”

Frowning, Ron unrolled the paper to see the note he had written to Hermione on it. “You’ve Wingardium Leviosa-ed my heart.” He was rubbish when it came to girls.

■■ 2. Avada Kedavra

“I’m just saying that you need to be careful,” Hermione sighed looking over at Harry as they sat by the fire in the common room together. Neville was asleep on the sofa across from them making awfully loud snoring noises.

“What do you mean?” Harry asked looking over his glasses at her.

Hermione shut her book and moved closer to Harry. “Let’s just say that there are some rumors going around about girls wanting to feed you a love potion.”

Harry grinned from ear to ear looking very pleased with himself.

“Don’t get so excited about it,” Hermione scoffed unable to believe Harry was happy about the notion of being feed a love potion. Harry had to realize that he was the target of many girls these days after the events of last term and the Department of Mysteries. “They only want to do it because they think you are the Chosen One.”

“Hermione, I am the Chosen One,” Harry laughed puffing out his chest. “I’m the boy who lived. Not the boy who died.”

Hermione took the heavy book she was holding and smack Harry as hard as she could on the shoulder. Boys could be so thick sometimes.

■■ 9. Disapparate

“Alright, just relax. Breath. Relax.”

“Hermione, you are making me nervous,” Ron hissed through his teeth as they waited with the rest of their classmates for their names to be called.

“Sorry,” she whispered.

“Wealsey, Ronald,” called a elderly witch looking over the rim of her glasses.

“Here goes nothing,” he sighed standing up.

After a few more minutes, another wizard made his appearance. “Granger, Hermione.”

Hermione started choking on her own saliva when she tried to both speak and swallow at the same time. Coughing like she was about to lose a lung.

Hermione entered the room where she saw nothing but the wizard that had called her in.

“Alright, Miss Granger. I want you to Disapparate to a location of your choice and then Apparate back.”

Now able to breathe calmly, Hermione tried to clear her mind and think of a location for her to Disapparate to. Remember the three D’s, she told herself.

With her location clear in her mind, Hermione felt herself being pulled by the navel and found herself in the forest she had gone camping in with her parents. Smiling, she focused on getting back to Hogwarts.

“Congratulations,” the wizard smiled. “You’ve passed.”

■■ 15. Hurling Hex

The only audible noise in the room was the crackling of the fire and the grinding of Harry’s teeth. Ron sat with his arms folded across his chest and looked just as peeved as Harry – minus the grinding teeth.

Harry leaned forward for a moment and looked as though he were about to address Hermione, but held his breath instead and leaned back on the sofa. Ron continued to glare at her with a look of utter shock while Harry’s was one of betrayal.

“I do wish you two would stop looking at me like that,” she said calmly after a few moments holding a book to her chest.

“I think Harry has the right to look at you however he bloody feels like it,” Ron said shaking his head up and down.

“I am only looking out for Harry’s well being,” Hermione snapped. “There could be a Hurling Hex placed on it…or worse.”

Hermione, don’t be silly,” Ron said looking like he was about to burst into a fit of laughter. “There is no way a Hurling Hex is on Harry’s broom.”

“And why is that?”

“It doesn’t have a mouth to hurl from.”

■■ 36. Reducto
{ all kinds of hearts } mini challenge

Dear Diary,

It’s now been, well, I have begun to lose count now as to how many days we have been out here. I feel like I need to record the events that took place at Godric’s Hollow not but a few days ago, but my heart is just not in it right now. I suppose a summary will have to suffice. We went, I told Harry not to follow a woman who appeared out of nowhere, he didn’t listen, almost got swallowed by Voldemort’s snake, I used the Blasting Curse to allow us to escape, and ended up breaking Harry’s wand.

I believe that now has us up to date on events.

There is still no news from Ron. He might just as well have used Reducto on my heart seeing as it is still in pieces since he left. Harry tries to make me feel better, but the feeling of abandonment is just too strong.

If only he would have taken off that ruddy locket…

I still look to the horizon every day hoping to see him come back.

Still, if he did come back, he better prepare himself because I am going to beat him senseless.

■■ 38. Rictusempra

Hermione flopped herself down on the couch looking as if the end of the world were coming. Harry and Ron looked at one another and shrugged.

“What’s got you so blue?” Ron asked.

“You aren’t still upset about getting an Exceeds Expectations on your Defense Against the Dark Arts O.W.L are you?” Harry said with a smug look on his face.

“I…I don’t want to talk about it,” she said giving Harry a dangerous look.

“But…that was months ago!”Ron exclaimed. “Not to mention you got Outstandings on all your other O.W.L’s.”

“I said I don’t want to talk about it,” she snapped getting a bit defensive. “If we’d had been taught properly from the start, things would have been different.”

“Sounds like you could use a laugh,” Harry said looking around the common room.

“Rictusempra!” Ron said flicking his wand at Hermione who flying backwards the couch and hit the floor with a soft thud. “What? You said she could use a good laugh,” Ron shrugged.

Hermione got back on her feet and glared at Ron. “Ron,” she said through pressed lips. “I am not ticklish…but I sure hope you are.”

“I don’t think she is laughing,” Harry whispered.

■■ 48. Unbreakable Vow

It was over. It was finally over.

Standing it what remained of the school, Hermione reached out and took hold of Ron’s hand, squeezing it gently. There had been so much lost. The lives of Fred, Professor Lupin, Tonks, and many others had been put out almost as easily as one blows out a candle. Yet, Hermione found some comfort in knowing that their sacrifices had not been in vain.

She now turned her gaze to Harry, who had against all odds fulfilled a prophecy. She smiled at him as she look out past the broken grounds and up at the sky. She was glad to have been a part of it all. Glad to have been able to make a difference. Glad to show all those wizards out there who doubted muggle-borns. Glad to have taken this journey with two people who had become more than just her friends. They had become a part of her very being.

She looked up at Ron for a moment and rested her head on his shoulder, making an unbreakable vow to herself, and the rest of wizardingkind for that matter.

“Come on,” she smiled. “Let’s go home.”
