As the day wound down from all the excitement, Kat couldn’t help but look up at Wilson as he lay asleep on the couch beside her. A contented smile gracing her face. “How did I not see it?” she quietly asked herself as she mulled over their mutual best friend’s words.

It seemed as if everyone else in their circle had noticed the connection between them but not them. Until the moment they found strength in each other’s arms. Then it all came into crystal clear focus.

Now all they had to do was give in and let fate decide.

Gavin laid down his quill and starred at his resignation letter. It had been a tough decision but one he…and Tasha…had finally decided would be a good one.

Over 5 years in the A&C had given him a lot to deal with, both good and bad. Yet with a baby on the way the now FORMER obliviator felt the need for a more stable career with decent hours and being on-call was tough.

“Gavin...” Tasha called from the other room. “Dinner.” He smiled and got up to answer, happy with his impending future.

3. Reflections - Lea Salonga

“Can anyone tell me what this is?” the muggle studies professor asked her less-than-enthusiastic class. The headmaster had had the idea to make the subject mandatory for the year and the Slytherin house members were none too happy about it.

Nigel raised his hand, remembering a similar item at his grandfather’s house. “Isn’t it a light bulb?”

A handful of snakes in the corner snickered. “Like you would know,” the leader remarked, the Balfours well-known purebloods who had no dealings with the muggle world.

“Correct, Mr. Balfour,” the professor accepted as the muggleborn wanted to hide.

No…they didn’t know HIM.

Out of the mouths of both his brother and Sabel, Simon knew his training as a YATI wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. And he was prepared for the worse. However what he wasn’t prepared for was the actions of one former housemate doing his best to make his training even tougher.

“He really does think he’s all that, doesn’t he,” I said.

Simon couldn’t help nodding, his eyes alert and darting around for the source of the voice. With no luck, he simply shook his head.

“Great…now I’m imagining things. Legend would love to hear that.”

I Don’t Want To Be – Gavin DeGraw

Gryffindor or Slytherin?
Mr. Nice Guy or giving into his in-bred darker side?

Gideon was tired of trying to figure out just where he belonged in the world. He was simply Gideon Gavin Gert. Son of Celeste and Damien Gert…brother to Andy Carson and Kacie Gert.

Potions apprentice and Hogwarts graduate. Animangus and amateur astronomer. Nothing more and nothing less and really just a combination of all his many parts. If anyone had any problem with it, they could just jump of the Leaning Tower of Pisa for all he cared.

Family was all he really needed to get by.

The healer bit her lip as she hid behind the desk hearing the taunt of one Natalie Lestrange. Her former friend and fellow Gryffindor and now dark witch out for blood.

“I just want to kill you. And make it worthwhile…you’ll be my latest Horocrux.”

Fat chance she was going to let that happen. When had things changed so badly between them? Probably when Natalie gave into the prejudice of her family and decided she, a mere half-blood, wasn’t worth her pureblooded time.

But then that’s what idiotic judgment against people did…ruin relationships.

7. The Puppy Song - Harry Nilsson

“Good evening.”

You turn your head at the greeting at your locked door and spot one of your tenants walking his great dane back to his own apartment. Wait…when had Mr. Chambers gotten another dog?

“Good evening,” you return, facing the door as the lock finally clicks.

Man and dog pass and yet when they reached the stairs you look again this time over your other shoulder as if wary of the man’s antics. Only you now spot Mr. McNally there alongside his flat-mate.

And no dog.

Thinking your imagining things, you shake your head and head into your apartment.

First as a customer…

Elinor had started out as a woman in need of supplies, Valentina rolling her eyes at her antics. Nigel himself being clueless as always.

…Then as a friend…

They shared a favorite season and a love of science. A border-line stalker relationship developed as Elinor sought to make him feel wanted.

...Finally as a lover…

He found himself falling in love…like a man dosed with the love potions he abhorred. The woman having gotten under his skin, showing him feelings within himself he never felt before.

And most of the time…he was just doing his job.

9. Gryffindor Rally Cry - Ministry of Magic

Is that all you’ve got, Bennett?

The taught echoed in Simon’s head as he looked out onto the field before the game. His fellow captain was still annoyed that he had given up in favor of his team’s safety.

Too bad for him.

It didn’t matter anyway. His team was going to win this…fair and square. And with all of their heart and courage combined not just him.

Simon just hoped Kurumi got the snitches to pay the eagles back for Jacob’s carelessness the month before. Maybe he’d realize that the Ravenclaws weren’t the only fliers allowed in the air.

It was a beautiful clear night in the Italian countryside. A streak zoomed across the sky, only revealing itself as a jet-black raven as it got closer and crossed into the moonlight, finally landing upon a stone outcropping. With a caw, bird became boy and Gideon sat were once his animangus perched.

Contented sigh replaced caw.

It felt amazing to finally have the freedom to fly again…the open air and ground to enjoy the stars that still called to him. Nothing mattered at the moment, not school trouble nor relationships, his mind clearing as he breathed deep.

Good night world.

Kat was beginning to wonder if her life would ever calm down. It seemed as if every time there was happiness, all she had to do was turn around for it to all go downhill. Like a dementor trailed her every move and mood ready to suck the good things away for their pleasure.

A friend’s wedding….followed by another friend’s baby being killed.
Her cousin falling in love but gaining a man who wanted to wipe her from the face of the earth.
Her own life marred by the occasional run in with Lestrange.

“When had things gotten so complicated?”

Gavin?…Gavin?

His head was swimming as he struggled back to consciousness, the call of his name just barely registered on the edge of his thoughts. The desk had done a number on him as the rush of water had pulled him off his feet.

Opening his eyes and trying to focus, Gavin was aware of being pulled free of the flood that still existed in the office of Level 3. Looks like they might be here awhile as they dealt with the catastrophe that was their workplace.

Their own private pool.

All they needed was a rubber duck or two.

“I need the supplies for first years.” The young girl looking timidly as she asked assistance.

“…that will be 9 galleons and 14 sickles.”

“That’s a lot! Um…I don’t think I have enough.” Nigel bit back a groan.

“Next…”

“I think I’m ready to check out.” The counter overflowing between them.

“Yes…?”

“Do you sell protective gloves.”

Nigel sighed and rushed about dealing with the hustle and bustle of the summer rush. It was a good thing he loved the potions brewing portion of being a shopkeeper. The dealing with customers side was so darn trying.

Simon ran the conversation over and over in his head the days after the break-up. He had lost the one girl he had ever cared about because of his job. And as much as he had always wanted to be an auror, it didn’t seem worth it at the moment.

Sitting down on his couch with a sigh, alone in his apartment now that Sabel was gone, his eyes spotted the textbooks from his law classes. The program he had put on hold when he had finally gotten into the YATI program. Maybe…just maybe…it was time to get back into them. Prove he was more than just Jax’s hard-working employee.

Because Simon Bennett was better than that.

He watched her cross the pitch and disappear, his eyes following every movement but his thoughts were elsewhere. They were in their past, lost, when it seemed they had no future.

And now it was all gone. Selina had cast him off and walked away with not a glance. Tore out his heart and bashed it apart with Mortimer.

Had he missed the signs? The unspoken words? Been blind to think they would last?

There would be no star-crossed love…just a black hole.

The split schools hadn’t been too much of a pain for her, even if she did miss seeing Si every once in a while. With what was going on without her at home, she needed a friend.

But no…it was the mistreatment of her house that bothered her. The splintering benches, the cold rooms in the tower. And the messed up classes like the headmistress having to teach etiquette in DADA.

The house-made cushions for the Great Hall she had been happy to help were only the first move.

The powers that be hadn’t heard the last of Gryffindor House.

Well I'm going home.

He had been away too long. As much as Gavin had settled into his current job and city, it just wasn’t his place.

So the charm’s worker and resigned himself and his job in favor of a change of scenery. This one far more familiar than the last that had dropped him here. Gavin packed up his meager belongings even before signing the transfer papers. Now all that was left was to push himself the last few proverbial inches. Or in this case…miles.

With on final look at his old apartment, he apparated with a pop. He was going home.

Oh he was beyond ecstatic with the return of his beloved to his shop to be by his side. Elinor just made the cozy back room seem so much brighter. As Nigel listened to her explain her day, the potions master hung on her every word. A blissful experience was present in her tone, her mannerisms…her very essence.

“Oh my dear Elinor,” he murmured in sympathy to the lab director. HIS lab director.

If only the feeling could remain unabashed.
If only it wasn’t an illusion of ingredients flowing through his being.
Love potions had that effect.
Merlin help him.

Simon starred at the young man facing him as if he was crazy. Why would he give the captain’s hat to a bloody landlubber?

“Neigh, you scallywag!” he refused, holding the desired item just out of reach. It would be given to one person and one person only. Not even the first mate was worthy in his eyes in all honesty.

And then the younger man decided to fight, sending them both over the railing with the momentum. “You brute!” Simon exclaimed, righting himself in the shallow water. “Fight with a bit of honor, ye matey!”

Hmph!

He probably shouldn’t have done it.

Swerved in between Selina and the impending bludger taking the hit meant for the Gryffindor captain. Surely she would later insist she could take care of herself. And as he blacked out on the ground after hitting the stands on the way down, his body was certainly complaining against the sudden decision to put himself in danger.

He was going to feel it in the morning.

…and the afternoon

…and the evening.

But he wasn’t considered a knight for nothing. Gallant in every way, including defending one’s girlfriend from enchanted round flying injury-causing projectiles

Everybody wants to be a cat
Because a cat's the only cat who knows where it's at
Everybody's pickin' up on that feline beat
'cause everything else is obsolete

The cat picked her way down the hallway in search of her charge. The woman had escaped from everyone else, wanting to hide from the attention and Kat wasn’t about to leave her to her more crazy thoughts. Who knew what could wind up happening then.

The door outside linking the hospital to its gardens registered a living presence, opening to allow the feline access out of doors. A good thing, given the Greek woman she had been looking for was seated on a bench beneath a tree not far away. The cat jumped besides her gaining the woman’s attention and despite her sadness, offered a weak smile to her friend.

“I should have known that you would find me,” she mused as she picked Kat up to place on her lap, gingerly stroking the fur of her animangus best friend.

Is this the little girl i carried?

I don't remember growing older,
When did they?

September 1st.

Usually just a normal day, at least in their family, but this year was different. This year marked the first change of many. Gavin watched as Tasha rushed at the brick wall with Cassie and the girl’s belongings, pausing to think of all that it meant.

His little girl was all grown up.

Nope…no tears or even wetness in his eyes. Not a single one.

“Daaaad…” Grayson moaned from his father’s side, “Can we go now?”

“Sure…just don’t let go and keep running.” The duo soon taking off after.

In two years’ time it would be his turn.

When did life become so complicated?
Years of too much thought and time I wasted

Is a proof I fought and lived another day

Nigel looked around the tiny apartment he had managed to afford…for now. Life outside of Hogwarts was proving to be more trying than originally anticipated.

No family. At least blood that cared.
Little money. Or ways to acquire more.
Few acquaintances anywhere close to friends.

And University was set to begin in only a few weeks and he had to manage to get his supplies. Thank Merlin he had managed a scholarship for his coursework. Else he would be even deeper in trouble with no clear prospects on how to improve his life on his own.

Life couldn’t get worse.

Chuckling could be heard from wherever his best friend had decided to hide himself to wait. Simon only rolled his eyes and sighed, pulling out his charmed quidditch robes from his locker. They almost looked like they glowed and were all…glittery.

“What in Merlin’s beard did you do to them?”

“I just made them special so you stand out, oh dear Capitan.” Josh remarked as he came out of hiding behind him, looking over his shoulder so they could both see them in the mirror.

“Only you would think they needed that.”

“Only I am your very best friend.”

Gideon wasn’t sure what to make of going off to Hogwarts. He wasn’t too keen on leaving his parents and being on his own. Bad things happened when he was.

To him.
To his mum.
To his family.

But his mum assured him that everything was going to be alright and they could write back and forth as frequently as he wanted to. And Gideon had to admit, seeing the familiar forms of Cleo and Watson would always sooth him. They were his family. The two birds and the four humans that were blood.

A light in the darkest moments.
