Default Muggle Studies: From Film to Photograph

The door to the Muggle Studies classroom stands open, though no adult is in sight to bid you welcome.

Something else, however, is far more likely to capture your attention. Across the corridor, above the door of the room opposite the classroom, a peculiar red light glows steadily, bathing the surrounding stonework in a faint crimson hue. It is difficult to remember ever seeing it before. Had it always been there, unnoticed? And if so, why was it glowing now?

Walking inside the classroom, instructions written across the whiteboard can be read:
Before taking your seat, please collect the following materials:
  • 1 pair of nitrile gloves (put these on immediately)
  • 1 pair of safety glasses
  • 1 film protector sheet
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • Your processed negative film strip
An arrow beneath the list points toward a table beside the board. Several bins have been neatly arranged there, each containing the required supplies. Gloves are sorted by size, safety glasses are stacked in orderly rows, and scissors rest in a small plastic crate.

To the side, a heavy curtain conceals part of the classroom. Behind it, a clothesline stretches from one wall to the other. Hanging from it are strips of developed camera film, each clipped in place and labelled with masking tape bearing a student's initials. Tiny images are visible within the dark negatives—familiar faces, pets, castle corridors, the grounds, and countless other moments students have chosen to capture.

Once you have gathered your materials, go ahead and get settled into your seat. The lesson, led today by a guest lecturer, will begin shortly.

──────── ✧ ────────

OOC: Students in Muggle Studies with Professor Berry (NPC) have been exploring a variety of Muggle inventions, with the most recent lessons focusing on cameras and the art of photography. Each student was provided with a mechanical film camera and tasked with documenting moments of life at Hogwarts that could be included in the school's time capsule. During the previous lesson, students learned how exposed rolls of photographic film are processed into strips of developed negatives. Today's lesson, under the guidance of a guest lecturer, will showcase how images preserved on film emerge as finished photographs.

Levi had ardently taken note of the latest Muggle Studies notice that went up on the noticeboard in the Hufflepuff Common Room. Which was why he was on his way to the classroom, dressed in his Muggle attire of faded jeans and a tee shirt that read “Chai tea? Chai means ‘tea’, bro! You are saying ‘tea tea!’". It was a popular quote from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. There was also an image of Pavitr Prabhakar - India’s Spiderman - sipping on a cup of the liquid featured on said shirt. Everyone was welcome for this brief but necessary Hindi lesson.

“Well, this is going to be interesting,’’ Levi commented to Diallo. He tugged at his satchel strap as he eyed the red room across. He already figured the room was most likely for developing the photos, given what a previous lesson had entailed. The Hufflepuff’s gaze shifted, seeking out professor Berry but not seeing her, he hones in on the board and its instructions. Needless to say, he wasted no time in gathering the supplies from the bin.

First the gloves; a snug pair was found and pulled on. Followed by the other three materials, then lastly, the negatives. He removed them from the tape bearing his initials. Even if there were any doubts, there was one image prominently featuring his bestie. Diallo should be flattered.

Once everything was gathered, he moved carefully to a seat.

Diallo rounded the corner with Levi, immediately eyeing the odd crimson light glowing above the room opposite the classroom. "...Well that's not creepy at all." At Levi's comment, he smirked at his friend's Spider-Man shirt. He chuckled before adding, "I wonder if I can convince my dad to get that kind of lighting in my room at home." It had a sort of peaceful yet foreboding vibe to it. But he followed in to see the whole set up.

Diallo scanned the whiteboard instructions before grabbing a pair of nitrile gloves, safety glasses, a film protector sheet, scissors, and finally retrieving the strip of negatives marked with his initials. Catching the frame that featured himself, he glanced at Levi with a crooked grin. "Well, they sure did manage to get my good side." Slipping into a seat beside his friend while waiting for the lesson to begin.

For those paying attention to the door across the corridor, the red light abruptly switched off. A moment later, the door opened and Professor Berry emerged alongside an elderly witch with silver hair. The pair exchanged a few quiet words before entering the classroom together. Once some eyes settled upon them, Professor Berry yielded the floor to their guest.

"Good morning, everyone," the older woman stated as she stepped to the front of the classroom with a warm smile.

"My name is Eleanor Fenwick, and I am delighted to meet all of you finally. Many years ago, I walked these hallowed halls as a Ravenclaw. Since then, I've worked in both Muggle and international affairs at the Ministry, taught young witches and wizards in primary school about Muggle–Magic connections, and spent the more recent decades as a travel writer, photographer, and documentarian. Much of that work has involved using Muggle cameras to record people, places, and moments from around the world, which makes today's lesson particularly close to my heart."

She rested a hand lightly against the nearest desk and glanced around the room.

"Now, enough about me. I hear you've already learned how Muggle cameras capture images, how those images are recorded onto film, and how exposed film is transformed into negatives. Today, we'll complete that journey. By the end of the lesson, you'll understand how these tiny images become the photographs people place in albums, frame on their walls, or preserve for future generations.

Holding up a strip of developed film, she continued. "Each of you was asked to capture moments that could be included in the Hogwarts time capsule. To start, I'd like you to spend a few minutes talking about some of the moments you chose to preserve. Turn to those sitting near you, point out a frame or two, describe what you photographed, and explain why you chose to capture it. What made that moment worth remembering? What story do they tell about Hogwarts, about your life, or about the people who matter to you?"

As she spoke, Mrs. Fenwick picked up a pair of scissors from the supply table.

"While you're sharing, carefully cut your negative strip into sections of six frames each. Most rolls contain thirty-six exposures, which means you should end up with six smaller strips when you're finished. Please work slowly and only cut between frames. Trust me, accidentally trimming a photograph you've been waiting weeks to see is not an experience you'd like to have." A ripple of amusement touched her expression.

"Once you've finished, return your scissors and place the strips inside your film protector sheet—the sleeves will help protect your negatives from scratches, fingerprints, dust, and other damage. You'll have about five minutes. After that, we'll move on to the next stage and begin transforming these tiny negatives into full photographic prints."

OOC: Hello, and welcome to this special Muggle Studies lesson. Many thanks to those of you who are already here, and feel free to jump in at any point if you haven't posted yet—the more the merrier. ^___^

When sharing what moment(s) your character captured with their camera, feel free to be inspired by the Term 73 Time-Turner Challenge if you need some ideas. I look forward to your creativity!

The lesson will continue roughly 30 hours from now.

Levi had grinned impishly when Dee had commented about the room not being creepy. “If you’d like your room to be creepy,’’ he teased before sticking out his tongue. He had also tilted his head thoughtfully, considering his friend’s words. His main concern was Dee’s eyes hurting while adjusting to the light. “I think it’d be interesting. Let me know what your dad says.”

Now, he surveyed the negatives. “Are you sure about that? Isn’t it the other side that’s more photogenic?” Biting back a laugh, Levi proceeded to arrange everything neatly, though he was momentarily distracted when the light in his peripheral vision suddenly snapped off. Levi looked up as two persons made their way over to the students; one was familiar, the other was not.

Mrs. Fenwick, it turned out, was quite the interesting woman. He liked hearing about her earlier life and job. As the negatives were mentioned, the Hufflepuff glanced down at his. This time his eyes caught the image of the beech tree at the Lake which was in all its glory with healthy leaves. Okay, so the instructions were simple and Levi thanked his lucky stars that he wasn’t required to share his thoughts with the class. Unfortunately for Dee, he’d be on the receiving end of that privilege.

“I really like this image of the beech tree because the tree looks so lively but calm at the same time,” Levi began, picking up the scissors. “I mean, there’s beauty in stuff that are… less lively? too. Old abandoned houses, stuff taken over by vines… you know what I mean, Dee?” He stuck his tongue between his teeth as he began to carefully cut the negatives into strips of six. “At the time, it also had this serene look around it, with its leaves swaying gently in the breeze.” He fell silent again, taking his time to continue cutting. “Then there’s the one with some random guy who happens to be my bestie. I suppose I’m always grateful to him for keeping me grounded.” Excuse Levi, please. He knew he could have said that in a heartfelt manner; it was just that he had difficulty expressing his feelings to anyone, especially those who meant the world to him. But he had needed Dee to know that he was important, hence the image on the negative. “So, tell me about the images you snapped,’’ he added quickly, before he made things awkward.

It seemed to take ages, because of how careful Levi was being with the cutting, before it was done. Just as meticulous as before, the strips were placed into the protector sheet one at a time. Thank goodness for gloves in the first place!

Eleanor waited patiently while the students exchanged stories, moving quietly between the tables as negative strips were trimmed, sorted, and tucked into their protective sleeves. Here and there she caught fragments of conversation—a treasured friend, a favourite view of the grounds, a moment someone feared might otherwise be forgotten. Each earned a small smile.

When the allotted time had passed, she gently clapped her hands together. "Wonderful. If you're still mid-conversation, that's quite all right, but let's begin moving on. If you'd all bring your negatives with you, we'll continue next door. And before we enter, a reminder: safety glasses on, please. We'll be working with a few chemicals soon, and I would very much prefer not to have anyone escorted to the Hospital Wing."

Once the class had assembled, the elderly witch led them across the corridor. The room beyond looked rather different from an ordinary classroom. Several tables had been arranged, each containing an enlargers, a stack of photographic paper, and four solution-filled trays. Along the opposite wall stretched a series of drying lines.

After the last student entered, the woman closed the door behind them and extinguished the normal lights. Instantly, the room transformed. Red safelights cast everything in a dim crimson glow, turning familiar faces and furniture into strange silhouettes.

"Welcome to the darkroom." Her voice lowered slightly, encouraging students to look around. "Everything you've done so far has prepared you for this moment. Up until now, your photographs have existed only as tiny images trapped on film strips. Now you are ready to transform those negatives into prints."

Eleanor moved to a nearby demonstration station, carefully situated so that students throughout the room could observe each step.

"For now, our attention will be on the enlarger and its various components. The first step is choosing a single frame from one of your negative strips." She lifted a sample negative for demonstration. "Don't worry about making the perfect choice. Consider this your practice run. Once you've mastered the technique, you'll be able to return and print whichever photographs you like best."

With practiced ease, she slid the negative carrier from beneath the enlarger head and held it up for the class to see. "Next, gently pull out and open the film carrier. The negative goes in upside down so the final image will appear correctly oriented," she instructed before placing a frame onto the carrier. "Then position your chosen frame so it sits neatly within the square opening before securing the carrier and returning it."

"Once it's locked into place, switch on the enlarger lamp." A projected image immediately appeared on the scrap paper resting below. "This machine functions rather like a projector as the light passes through the negative and enlarges the image onto photographic paper.

"From there, you can raise or lower the enlarger to change the image size and use the focusing wheel until everything appears as you like." She then adjusted the enlarger head, causing the projected image to increase and gradually snap into clarity. "There is a lot of flexibility with this, so feel free to experiment. Once you're satisfied with the composition and focus, switch off the enlarger lamp and replace the scrap paper on the easel with a sheet of photographic paper." She held up a sheet. "You will want to place it emulsion-side up—the shiny side."

Mrs. Fenwick set the paper carefully onto the easel and looked back toward the students. "That is where we will stop for now. Once everyone is ready, I will continue with the next steps. If you need any assistance or have questions, at any point feel free to speak up."

With that said, she began making her way around the room, ready to pause beside workstations to answer questions, assist, and offer encouragement as needed.

OOC: We are now transitioning into the main activity of the lesson, which has been divided into two parts. The first part involves students selecting one of their negative frames and preparing it for printing by setting up and focusing their enlarger. The second part of the main activity will be posted shortly.

Please feel free to catch up as needed and jump in whenever you're ready!

Levi observed Mrs. Fenwick listening in - which made sense as she was the instructor - so he gave her a half shy, half awkward smile. Thank goodness he hadn’t poured his heart out otherwise he’d have been as red as a tomato! But as they were moving on, he relaxed and honed in on the next set of instructions. Ooh! The were moving to the next room? Thrilling!

The Hufflepuff plopped on the pair of safety glasses, taking a moment to peer around to ensure there was clear vision aka no smudges. As you may have noted, he was quite meticulous. Negatives in hand, he trudged along with the rest of the class. Once in the new room, he took his time looking around and observing. Things got a whole lot more interesting after the door closed, that was safe to say.

Dark room, red room… the terms were the same to Levi.

But! Now that they were going to transform their negatives, he was itching for Mrs. Fenwick to move things along!

During the demonstration process, he couldn’t help but think that everything looked easy. But he knew from experience that things often looked that way up until one tried to follow the process. He looked down nervously at his negatives. Hopefully, he would be able to complete this without much trouble. Preferably none at all.

The third year opted to work with an image of an eagle-feather quill since he didn’t feel any emotional attachment to it. Standing in front of the enlarger he had chosen to work with, the film carrier was pulled out and opened. The negative was placed in the directed upside down manner. A moment of surveying told him that the frame was indeed within the square. This meant he got to secure it then put it back. Following that, the lamp was turned on.

Levi sort of had a good time toying with the enlarger. However, it did not take him too long to determine a suitable size. That done, the lamp was then switched off so that the scrap paper with photographic paper - shiny side up.

Okay… he thought he did everything right.

Maybe he did want it to be creepy, just to keep his little brother on their toes. He would've teased back before class began. Hehe. The instant the crimson light outside flickered off, Diallo's eyes followed it to the door. Knew it wasn't there just for decoration. As Professor Berry entered alongside the elderly witch, he settled back into his seat and listened with surprising attentiveness to Mrs. Fenwick's introduction. A former Ravenclaw, Ministry worker, teacher, travel writer... she'd certainly done enough to know what she was talking about. When it came time to discuss their photographs, Diallo held up a frame featuring the Black Lake. Thought it'd be a shame if a view like this wasn't part of the time capsule. Glancing at another frame, he smirked toward Levi. And apparently you decided I was worth preserving too.

Taking extra care, Diallo cut only between the frames, remembering Mrs. Fenwick's warning about accidentally ruining a photograph. Once he had six neat strips, he slipped them into the protective sleeve before returning the scissors to the supply table. If they'd waited this long to see the negatives, he wasn't about to ruin one with a careless snip!

Diallo then followed the class into the darkroom, adjusting his safety glasses as the room disappeared beneath the soft red glow. It looked so cool! He hoped his dads would allow him to do something like this for his room. With his chosen Black Lake negative, he carefully placed it upside down into the enlarger's carrier before switching on the lamp as instructed. After a few patient adjustments to the height and focus, the projected image gradually sharpened into view. Satisfied with how it looked, he switched the enlarger off and replaced the scrap paper with a sheet of photographic paper, ready to see how the tiny negative would become a real photograph.

He glanced at Levi's and others nearby to compare and thought things looked alright... so far.

Eleanor gave the room a final glance, making sure each student had their enlarger focused and a sheet of photographic paper positioned beneath it. She gave nods of approval to each, including the young Hufflepuff and Slytherin boys nearby.

"Excellent. We're ready to make our first print," she said, resting one of her hands lightly beside the enlarger she had been using. "The next step is exposing the photographic paper. You will switch on the enlarger lamp and allow the light to shine onto the paper for somewhere between five and thirty seconds. The exact exposure depends on the density of your negative and the look you're hoping to achieve. Finding the perfect exposure is often a matter of trial and error, so don't be discouraged if your first print isn't exactly what you imagined. Around fifteen seconds is usually an excellent place to begin, though."

She demonstrated, counting down before switching off the enlarger. "Once the exposure is complete, carry your paper carefully to the four processing trays. Try not to bend or touch the surface of the paper."

Moving to the first tray, she lowered the sheet smoothly into the developer. "The developer is where the magic—well, the chemistry—happens." A faint chuckle escaped her. "Start counting to yourself immediately and leave the print there for sixty seconds."

Almost immediately, faint shapes began to materialise on the paper. "This is my favourite part," she admitted, watching the image slowly emerge. "No matter how many thousands of photographs I've developed, watching an image appear from what looked like a blank sheet of paper never quite loses its wonder."

When the minute had elapsed, Eleanor lifted the print using the tongs resting beside the tray. "Each tray has its own dedicated pair of tongs. Keep them with their assigned solution to avoid contaminating the chemicals."

She transferred the print into the the next tray: the stop bath. "The stop bath halts the developing process. Ten seconds here is all you’ll need."

After the brief pause, she reached for the other pair of tongs. "Next comes the fixer. The fixer stabilises the image, making it permanent and preventing further exposure to light. After transferring the print, leave it here for thirty seconds."

Once the time had passed, she used another pair of tongs to lift the print into the last tray. "Finally, you will place your print into the rinse bath. This tray contains clean water, which removes any remaining processing chemicals. Allow your print to rinse for approximately two minutes."

While her print was in the rinse bath, Eleanor looked around the room, ensuring everyone was following along comfortably.

"When the rinse is complete, remove the print with the last set of tongs and bring it over to the drying area along that side of the room," she stated, gesturing to the drying lines containing a number of wooden clothespins. "Your print will need around thirty minutes to dry completely before it is ready to handle.

"Once your first print is hanging to dry, I encourage you to make additional prints. Try different photographs, adjust your exposure times, or even experiment with changing the crop or composition. Darkroom printing is as much an art as it is a science, and every print teaches you something new."

With that said, she smiled warmly and waited a moment before she started circulating through the room, pausing beside individual workstations to answer questions and offer quiet guidance as Hogwarts' captured moments slowly emerged from blank sheets of photographic paper.

OOC: Apologies for the wait; I have been travelling abroad and phone/iPad posts are always so tedious. Lol. But, without further ado, here is the second part of the main activity.

At this stage of the lesson, students will develop their photographs using the steps that were modelled. Feel free to have your student experiment with exposure time, image size, cropping/framing, focus, careful vs. rushed timing, following or disrupting the steps, etc. Varying results are strongly encouraged!

Levi couldn’t deny it: that shot of the Black Lake was wonderfully gorgeous. So needless to say he had agreed with Diallo’s decision about it being left out of the time capsule. As for the other comment? He rolled his eyes playfully before telling his friend not to let his head swell due to ego. But now that they had both completed the first set of instructions, he flashed the Slytherin a thumbs up. So far, so good! the expression on his face said. This was confirmed by Mrs. Fenwick a short while later.

First print already? Excellent!

Levi reached out to put the enlarger’s lamp. He then checked to ensure that the light covered the entire paper before waiting for the recommended fifteen seconds. Once that time passed, the paper was gingerly carried over to the trays. He absolutely refused to get his fingers touching the surface of it, and managed to place it in the tray without doing so. Maybe not as gracefully as Mrs. Fenwick had but no damage was done, fortunately. The Hufflepuff let the magic/chemistry take effect, counting down the seconds until one minute had elapsed. During that time, he had peered at the paper, quite fascinated with watching the image take form. He could understand why the woman decided this was her favourite part.

Tong in hand, the paper was removed from the first tray and into the Stop Bath. Ten seconds went by quite quickly. With the assigned tong, he next moved on to the Fixer. He was only supposed to hover there for thirty seconds while the paper soaked but Levi got distracted by watching his classmates. The results? The paper actually got soaked for close to a minute. When he realised what was happening, he mentally kicked himself as he hurriedly moved to attempt to rectify his error. Silently praying that this wouldn’t make too much of a difference in the proper outcome of the image, the paper was placed in the rinse bath. This time, the third year made sure that the soak lasted precisely two minutes. Finally, it was transferred to the drying line and fastened with a few clothespins.

Since thirty minutes was a long time to just stand around doing nothing, Levi opted to work on a couple more images. By the time he was done, and took to comparing them side by side while he chewed on his lower lip, he realised how indeed the first set of images were just trial runs. The few towards the end were much better. He now trusted himself to develop the more er… precious? meaningful? images. Those included the bestie, obviously. Speaking of…

Levi moved over to Dee to take a peek at his work. “How’re your images coming along?”

Once more and more prints had been clipped to the drying lines, Eleanor paused to admire the rows of damp photographs swaying gently beneath the red safelights. Landscapes, portraits, castle corridors, treasured friends, and quiet moments around Hogwarts and its surrounding grounds had all begun as tiny, seemingly insignificant negatives only minutes before. Now they existed as tangible memories.

After giving the class a five-minute warning to begin wrapping up what they were currently working on, the elderly woman waited until everyone had gathered before addressing them once more.

"I hope this experience has given you a new appreciation for just how much patience Muggle photography requires."

A warm smile spread across her face.

"Every step you've taken since receiving your mechanical film cameras has required intention. You chose moments worth preserving, carefully composed each before releasing the shutter, developed your film, selected the frames that spoke to you most, adjusted the enlarger, exposed the photographic paper, and guided each print through the developing process. Nothing about it was instantaneous, and every choice—large or small—left its mark on the finished photograph."

Letting her gaze drift thoughtfully around the room, Eleanor folded her hands before her.

"So, before we conclude today's lesson, I'd like us to reflect on everything you've experienced. "How is Muggle photography similar to and different from wizard photography?" She allowed the question to linger before continuing. "And beyond photography itself, what other connections can you make between this process and the magical world?"

Her smile softened.

"There are no single right answers here. Although magic and non-magic often take very different paths, one of the wonderful things about studying Muggles is discovering that they share more common ground than one may initally realize."

With that, Eleanor stepped to one side, giving the students the floor as the room remained bathed in the soft crimson glow of the safelights and their freshly made photographs slowly dried behind them.

OOC: As we begin wrapping up the lesson, Mrs. Fenwick has posed a question inviting students to draw connections between Muggle photography and the magical world. Feel free to think about the subjects they've studied, spells they've cast, potions they've brewed, magical objects they've encountered, or any other parallels that come to mind. Sharing multiple connections is welcome. I look forward to seeing everyone's creative interpretations!

If you would like to catch up on earlier portions of the lesson, please feel free to do so. The lesson will remain open for a few more days before being brought to a close.
