It was fortunate that she wasn't the first lesson of the day on a Friday, nor one of the last. It was always rough when lessons went into the afternoon on a Friday as she was well away the students more than likely were ready for their weekend. They might have been ready regardless but at least it was a little better. Having spent the better part of the morning rearranging things in the laboratory and carefully selecting today's ingredients for the potion today, it was time to just sit and wait.
There were no questions on the board, but curiously there was a sketch of a few hearts along side. Did the hearts have something to do with today's brew? Time would tell shortly.
ooc: we'll begin in probably about 20 hours *nods* Lesson has begun!! Catchup anytime and play as if you've been here all or long .... or suffer the consequences *ominous music*

Q1: what purpose does the ingredient have to the potion?

Thankfully Charms had been her last class. Nadia hated when she had to make the full trek from the dorms to the dungeons, and potions directly after breakfast sometimes led to sour stomachs. Instead she was ready for the latest lesson, the seventh year stepping into the familiar classroom once she reached the right door. And as she noticed she was the first to arrive, well the first STUDENT anyway, perhaps she was the only one.
“Good morning, Professor Adara,” she greeted the woman once her coach as she crossed her path. Her dark eyes flicking to the empty board as she moved to take a seat in the front row of workstations. Alas, no clue to the topic of today’s work to be had at the moment. That left the possibilities WIDE open and Nadia tried not to be too curious as to what they would be brewing.

Diego followed the crowd with his bestie, Vi, down to the dungeons so he could arrive on time with Potions Lesson. It was nice that he had already eaten, but hopefully whatever potion they'd brew today wouldn't make him want to lose his breakfast. The weekend was also so close, so he was a little on the anxious side with getting his lessons over with for the day.
Once the twelve-year old walked in, his smile was bright, "Hello Professor!" before he went over to his usual workstation. Ready to get started as he noticed the hearts on the board. Did someone else draw that or maybe the Professor was in love. He waited as patiently as he could for the lesson to begin.

Bria stepped into the Potions classroom, inhaling deeply as the familiar blend of crushed roots, dried herbs, and something faintly musky like shed snake skin or the damp earth of a creature’s burrow. Potions had always been one of her favorite subjects, a careful balance of precision and instinct, much like working with magical creatures. She found comfort in the methodical slicing of ingredients, the slow swirl of a well-brewed mixture, the way subtle changes in temperature or timing could alter the entire outcome. It was quite amusing that a subject that required such precision was one of her favorites all things considered.
As she made her way to her usual workstation, her fingers brushed against the cool, worn wood of the table and smiled at Professor Adara with a chipper "G'day, professor!" She adjusted the edges of her parchment, a small habitual movement, before glancing at the board. No written questions today, just a few hearts sketched in the corner. Bria’s gaze lingered on the hearts drawn on the board, head tilted, and mind immediately leaping to the many ways hearts appeared in nature. There were creatures with multiple hearts - hagfish, octopuses, squid, cuttlefish, and earthworms. Then there were those with hearts so powerful they could sustain immense magical energy, like dragons and their heartstrings prized in wand-making. In the plant world, heart-shaped leaves weren’t just common but often carried deep meaning. She thought of the Floating Heart, a delicate water plant, or the Bleeding Heart, a flower so striking it almost looked unreal. It also wasn’t uncommon for potions to involve symbolic representations - alchemy had long drawn inspiration from nature and the heart could mean anything: vitality, healing, strength, or something more complicated, like emotions. She highly doubted they’d be brewing Amortentia, though. Love potions were as tricky and volatile as a nesting hippogriff, after all!
Still, the mystery intrigued her. Much like studying creatures, potion-making required an understanding of ingredients beyond just their properties and how a brew could be coaxed into something greater than the sum of its parts. She settled into her seat, fingertips tapping lightly against the tabletop, a quiet anticipation settling in her chest. Maybe magical endurance? Like how a phoenix’s heart continued to burn with life even through death and rebirth? Probably best not to theorize too much - after all, the hearts could simply be doodles and nothing more.
Settled into her seat, Bria looked around and waved to her peers - particularly her fellow Gryffindors! And then, to get into the spirit of things, she doodled a couple of hearts on her own parchment.

Ary was looking forward to the weekend, alright. However, he doubted it would be any less hectic with all the homework and studying that needed to be completed for the looming OWLs. Perhaps the endless academics was why Ary seemed a bit tired. He did manage to give Adara a cheery smile and the usual finger wiggle-wave before going off to grab a workstation with Jan and Bry. Perhaps he’d take one at the back of the class, that way there would be less chances of anyone spotting him yawning.
The Slytherin noticed the hearts on the board and wondered if today’s lesson’s topic had anything to do with Valentine’s Day which was around the corner. It also made him think of Drake and the fact that Ary had recently confessed that he had fallen in love with him. Since the feeling was mutual, and Bry had accepted the fact… well, Ary couldn’t be happier.
Anyway. The fifth year was quite anticipating the lesson. It was one of his strongest after all.

She was well aware of the impending holiday, but Giselle was expert at playing it cool. Of course, she expected Rome to give her a gift, or whatever the Gryffindor thought was appropriate. Seventh year was certainly time to see what could happen, after all, and the dark-haired Slytherin was right there with the others in looking forward to what would come after they all survived exams and whatever else might occur between now and the end of term. She rather expected gifts from her siblings and Brandon too, along with whoever else may feel like doing anything. She was nothing if not open to new possibilities, after all.
After several years, it wasn’t strange to enter the classroom to see the professor, either. She knew the vague family connections didn’t matter, however much she might’ve hoped it would in previous years. She’d given the professor her best smile, even so, as she’d breezed her way toward her usual station. “Good afternoon, Professor!”, she added for good measure, settling in and getting her things ready for the lesson to begin.

Amelia could definitely see how that could happen. Fortunately she didn't think today's lesson would lend to any sourness but she did have some remedies on hand just in case. Now quidditch after breakfast was the worst, she always felt for those early Saturday morning games even though she wasn't the one actually playing anymore, she'd been there done that. And apparently after decades, whoever makes the schedules couldn't do any better. Which lately was her making the schedules, but they still needed approval from the school board, so she really didn't have that much control.
"Good morning, Nadia," she looked around thinking her twin would be along shortly no doubt.

Oh the professor most definitely was in love. For the last half a century, but that was not really the point of the doodles. She may have just been celebrating Valentine's day for the month of February. Or perhaps it was a small subtle hint to today's potion. Time would tell soon enough. "Hello Diego," appreciative of the young boy's enthusiasm. Perhaps it was him being a first year, but she hoped he kept that as long as possible throughout his Hogwarts studies.

Maybe it was just first years who were enthusiastic? She acknowledged Bria in return with a "good day," of her own, wondering too what the girl was thinking about. It was times when she saw how contemplative students were being that she really wished she could read minds. Except probably not because the mind was a SCARY place and half the things her kids and nieces and nephews told her, she really wished they'd have kept it in their heads.

And there was another Atreyu-Rehman sibling. She was surprised though to see Ary taking a workstation near the back but knew he'd be paying attention regardless. Well at least she hoped so, teenage hormones had a funny way of interfering with attention spans. Finger wiggle wave back though.

Vague family connections didn't matter. Whether you were a distance cousin or a direct blood-line niece, Amelia had always tried to play it fair. It wasn't that she didn't love her family because she most certainly did, but at her core she bled Hufflepuff fairness in everything she did. She was confused though by Giselle's good afternoon? At 10...10:30ish in the morning? Perhaps she'd been up since the early morning and it felt like afternoon by now? Students did crazy things with their sleep schedules, it was truly a miracle how they stay functional during the day.
"Good morning, Giselle," she greeted.
"Alright let's get started shall we?" Professor Adara gazed around at their eager faces. "Today's potion isn't too challenging. I like to call it my Slytherdor potion, because it contains powdered griffin claw and snake fangs. It also contains dragon heart too." Which may have explained the heart doodles, but not really because they were mostly just for fun.
"Those are just a few ingredients in the strength or endurance potion. Anyone care to venture some hypotheses for why dragon heart as opposed to some other type of heart? Or the purpose of any of the other ingredients?"
She flicked her wand and the ingredient list appeared on the board:
ooc: no wrong answers here. Just pick an ingredient and what purpose you think it might provide to the potion! We'll continue tomorrow night, about 20-24 hours

Nadia raised an eyebrow as Professor Adara gave her nickname for the potion they would be working on, relaxing to a smile of amusement at the explanation. Yeah, that did make some sense. The use of a dragon heart though. The Gryffindor did know they were a potions ingredient just like the heartstring was used for wards, but it still felt weird having spent so much time around the living, breathing majestic creatures in question at the family home.
Shaking her head slightly to bring herself back, the seventh year copied the name and ingredients list on a piece of clean parchment to begin her class notes. “A dragon heart may be used to combine the magical properties of the blood it once pumped, with the strength of the creature it powered.” It certainly spoke of strength and endurance.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Professor Adara had every right to be surprised as sitting at the back of a classroom wasn’t usually Ary’s thing. She needn’t worry however, as he would be paying attention even if he might be a little dependent on his two besties beside him to keep him from kneeling over in his cauldron and dozing off.
Slytherdor potion? Ary liked that and the name intrigued him. He scribbled the nickname of the potion in his book as well as the ingredients when they appeared on the board. Once he was done, the fifth year raised a hand. “Re’em blood gives the drinker an immense amount of strength, but that strength only lasts for a short time.” Stifling a yawn, he lowered his hand. He sure could do with a swig of the Wideye Potion right now.

The combination of a griffin and a snake made for an interesting contrast; one creature known for fierce nobility, the other for cunning resilience. She liked that balance, the way it hinted at strength through different means. Strength could be brute force, endurance, adaptability, or even just knowing when to strike. Though she did wonder why it wasn't called something since there was a serious lack of any lion references in the ingredients list. She remembered nain talking about Slytherdors and Ravenpuffs and every other sort of house combination, so she was curious as to why this brew was seemingly specific to just two houses - outside of what Professor Adara had already mentioned, of course. Although, technically, a griffin was a lion in part with its powerful build and commanding presence. Maybe that was the reasoning behind it? A griffin had the strength of a lion but the sharpness of an eagle - which meant that badgers were the only house not represented in the brew (snakes slithering rounding it out for Slytherin) and that was rather unfortunate. OH! Maybe it was the pomegranate? Grown from the earth, the element associated with the house, and a fruit symbolic of renewal, healing, and perseverance. That sure seemed Hufflepuff to her - very her dad who was never without a bit of dirt under his nails, much to mum's annoyance.
Bria’s eyes flickered with interest as she scanned the ingredient list, her mind already piecing together connections between them - probably connections anyway since she really did not know all that much what she was talking about...but she sure did know a thing or two about creature behaviors! "Well, salamanders can absorb and hold onto heat, right? Why they thrive and also feed on flames to survive. So maybe it helps with sustaining energy over time, like keeping the fire going rather than burning out too fast sort of a thing." The more obvious answer regarding salamanders was probably the fact that their blood had powerful regenerative and curative properties, but the blonde decided to sidestep that detail. Bria paused, eyes alight with curiosity as she pursed her lips. "But I’m wondering something, professor. About the unicorn tail hairs? They seem little different from the other creatures represented on the list. Much more delicate and docile...I suppose. And, well, there is blood, heartstring, claws, and fangs from the others...which sort of feel like they are more, hmm, not aggressive but more, hmm mmmm hmmm, vitality and strength, maybe? Unicorn hairs, which they shed so often, have more of this association with innocence and elegance. Are they necessary here to be like...a kind of contrast to the other more boisterous ingredients? Maybe to keep the strength of the others from becoming too wild in combination?"

Diego thought about the name "Slythedor". That sounded like a combination of Slytherin and Gryffindor. He wondered if the potion would make the drinker have their traits? If so, the good traits he hoped. He didn't want to have any bad traits. His thinking shifted when the question came about the use for the ingredients.
His housemate, Bria, did bring up an interesting point that led to him raising his hand to add. "Erm.. Unicorns have great healing powers, and being delicate their hairs are great for binding bandages. So I imagine they're useful for enhancing something." As far as he could work out.
Slytherdor potion Rose pondered, was that a combination of Slytherin and Gryffindor? She didn't fancy having snake traits since many of them were mean, and unfriendly. Rose had slipped into one of the desks at the back of the classroom before Professor Adara had locked the classroom door, giving her professor a quick wave and a 'Hello Professor' in greeting. A last minute trip to the girl's bathroom before class had taken longer than expected. Raising her hand this fifth year lioness said "I think Salamander Blood is an ingredient in this potion because the blood of a salamander has both rejuvenating and healing properties which can be good if you are feeling tired or in need of a energy boost."

"Ah Yes, the dragon heart. Dragon heartstring some of you might be familiar with in wand cores, and in a potion it has similar effect, drawing in the power and strength from the creature." It was definitely an obvious one to pick out.

Perhaps a brew of the wide-eye potion was needed? In a future lesson or of course, students were welcome to take advantage of the laboratory anytime they needed some extra practice. OWL studies were no joking matter.
Another obvious one. "Yes, precisely. Re'em blood does provide additional strength to the drinker"

The young first years tapped into some of the more intriguing potion ingredients and Professor Adara just listened intently for a moment. "I like that about the salamanders blood with the sustained energy overtime. There are two main uses for salamander blood in potions, usually fire-related or healing and restorative. In this particular instance, it provides more of a healing and restorative vibe. Healing muscle fibers and renewing their strength." Of course she could go more into the depths of muscle fibers, but that wasn't relative to the potion brewing experience and they only had so much time.
"As far as unicorn hairs, Diego is correct in their healing properties. They offer a bind for bandages, further enhancing the restorative properties of the salamander blood."

As the older gryffindor mentioned on the salamander blood as had her younger housemate, she merely nodded in agreement. "Exactly. The rejuvenation properties of salamander blood is what it draws from in this potion."
No one brought up the griffin claw or the snake fangs, but they did seem somewhat self-explanatory. Nor did anyone venture guesses on pomegranate - which was perhaps one of the more unusual ingredients.
"Well done. A couple more ingredients, griffin claws coming from the extraordinarily strong magical beast the griffin, increase the drinker's strength immensely. Snake fangs, because of the immense strength that snakes have however it's important to note that they should not be harvested from venomous snakes having to do with where venom is stored and the saliva that it can interact with it's ability to provide the strength needed."
"As for the pomegranate, much like salamander blood and unicorn hair, pomegranates offer healing and rejuvenation vibes, needed for the aforementioned muscle fibers and growth."
Moving on though. "The strengthening potion should grant the drinker enough strength to lift a muggle car, however, as mentioned with the re'em blood, the effects are generally not long lasting. Perhaps a couple hours, maybe 10 hours if you're lucky and skilled enough. I would recommend using caution after the first hour with heavy liftings, but enough of that, let's begin the brewing"
She flicked her wand, the quantities of each ingredient appearing next to previously listed items. And directly below, the first couple instructions appeared as well.
Ingredients
2 kilograms of dragon heart (a few grams more/less doesn’t matter)
1 pomegranate
A cup of re’em blood
One mature salamander’s blood
2 unicorn tail hairs
Powdered griffin claw
2 snake fangs
Instructions
- Add 2 litres of water and the unicorn tail hairs one by one
- Turn the heat to high and add the dragon heart
- Wait until it boils and add pomegranate
- Turn the heater to medium and wait for five minutes.
- In the meantime, mix re’em and salamander blood in a bowl and stir them five times clockwise and five times counter clockwise and crush griffin claw (doesn't have to be a perfect powder - just crush as well as you can withOUT magic).
ooc: apologies for the delay... first half of potion instructions up. I'll give you a little time to get these going and any questions, feel free to ask. And I'll post the rest of the instructions up by Friday evening / Saturday morning. There's plenty of time to work on this.

Diego felt happy to have gotten his answer correct. Then the lesson progressed, so they were going to be brewing a strengthening potion. He thought about how strong his papa and daddy were and he felt happy. He'd like to be as strong as them someday, but permanently since this potion was temporary.
Diego had made sure to jot down all the instructions and requirements before he collected the ingredients. Taking a cup of the me'em blood, he poured the salamander blood in the bowl to mix and stirred them five time clockwise, then counter-clockwise. He took the small hammer to crush the griffin claw.

Bria nodded slowly, though there was a flicker of disappointment behind her eyes. She’d been hoping for something a little more profound - something that spoke to a deeper balance of forces within the potion. Instead, the professor’s answer was more practical, more… expected? Healing and restoration. Binding properties. Less about contrast and more about reinforcement. The unicorn hairs were not tempering the strength of the other ingredients, but rathe enhancing their restorative qualities. It made sense, but it wasn’t nearly as exciting as what she'd imagined. She was sometimes told to temper her expectations, so perhaps this was just another example of those moments. At least her flowery exchange about salamander's blood had been in the right quidditch stadium, right? Still she had expected - hoped - there to be more push and pull between the ingredients. A little more tension in what they're doing together. Then again, maaaaaaaaaybe it wasn’t about the ingredients fighting each other so much as supporting one another. Strength without sustainability would burn out fast, after all. Which was kind of a joyous irony considering how stereotypically people pitted Gryffindors against Syltherins as opposites....and yet their names combined made up this potion's title. Fun!
Bria traced her finger down the list, mentally checking off each ingredient as she reached for them. It was a simple enough process to start (water first, then unicorn hairs) but she always found comfort in taking a moment to center herself before brewing. The rhythm of potion-making came naturally, but focusing her mind was anooooooooooooother thing entirely. As she added the water to her cauldron with Aguamenti, she let out a soft, trilling peet-peet-peet - a near-perfect mimic of the call of a golden oriole. It was a habit she'd had for as long as she could remember - and probably was a direct result of dad always performing some call or another as well as the ambient noises mum would play to lull infant Bria off to sleep. She dropped the unicorn hairs in one by one, watching as they drifted to the bottom of the cauldron like delicate silver threads. Without thinking, she whistled out a more complex melody, a rising and falling series of notes reminiscent of a woodlark this time. The familiar sounds helped quiet the noise in her head, allowing her to focus entirely on the motions of brewing - whistle while you work, right?
When it was time for the dragon heart, she adjusted the heat with careful precision and a couple of peep peep peeps like the chicks she used to sometimes nap with after feeding the hens and roosters. The heavy chunk of organ sank into the now-steaming water, sending up a faintly metallic scent that honestly made her feel a little queasy. While she waited for that to boil, Bria scooted her seat back a bit from her station and away from the waft of unpleasant odor. She might have adjusted the heat a bit too low ... judging by the sluggish bubbles forming at the bottom of her cauldron, but Bria wasn’t one to rush. Potions required patience, and besides, she had other steps she could get started on in the meantime.
Skipping over the pomegranate for now, because of a lack of boil to her water and dragon heart, she turned her attention to the griffin claw. It was a dense, rugged thing, all jagged edges and an earthy scent that reminded her of sunbaked cliffs. She set it onto her cutting board, rolling her shoulders before gripping the mortar and pestle. The claw resisted at first, but with her entire pette body weight she bore down with steady, even pressure ... twisting and grinding until the brittle outer layers began to splinter apart. She inhaled deeply through her nose, exhaling on a sharp, melodic whistle - a kestrel’s call, of sorts, to those who knew. The rhythmic sound helped her focus, and she let the pattern carry her as she worked. She wasn’t aiming for a perfect powder - the instructions had been clear on that - but she wanted to at least give it the appearance of something softer and less broken egg shells. Too coarse, and it might not blend properly...too fine, and it could lose some of its potency... either outcome would be a waste and disrespectful to the griffin who had provided these claws, so she had NO choice but to be diligent and get it right!

Nadia and her brother seemed to have gotten two of the ingredients correct each pertaining to strength while two other students rounded them off with some of the other qualities needed for the potion they would be working on. Success it would seem, but then their Dad taught them well even before Hogwarts. Now to do the actual brewing, the Gryffindor copying down both ingredients and steps as they appeared on the board, her attention split between them and listening to the professor’s further teachings. Griffin claws and snake fangs echoing the dragon and re’em in the strength department while the pomegranate partnering up with the blood and unicorn hair.
“Scourgify,” she cast on her cauldron just be extra sure it was clean before adding the requisite 2 liters of water within with a quieter Aquamenti. Then the unicorn hairs went in, one…two, before adding heat to bring it up high. Next was the dragon heart, carefully added into the growing mix that left her waiting for the potion to boil as directed. Once Nadia was satisfied with the rolling of the water, she added the pomegranate before lowering the heat. More waiting, though at least occupied with the task at hand…a bowl with both the salamander and re’em bloods to mix them properly with a list of stirs.
One…two…three…four…five times clockwise
One…two…three…four...five times counterclockwise.

If Professor Adara was being honest, some of the ethics involved with potion ingredient sourcing was always a bit controversial. Unfortunately potioneers hadn't found a substitute yet for some of the ingredients but at least for obtaining the ingredients, they seemed more ethical. Perhaps it was why her daughter had become a vegetarian because if she couldn't help for potion brewing she could at least help the animals in not consuming them. But thoughts aside, she took to observing the two gryffindor first years in their meticulous methods - well Diego seemed maybe a tad aggressive on the griffin claws but it wasn't anything wrong persay.
Nadia was meticulous with her stirring, as to be expected for a seventh year. The older students she definitely didn't worry about as much, although there were a few that could maybe use some remedial but overall they were fine.
"You're doing well," she noted reassuringly, as she flicked her wand for the remaining instructions.
- Add the blood mixture slowly and THEN, the powdered griffin claw IMMEDIATELY.
- Wait for ten minutes and add one snake fang
- Put the fire out and add the other snake fang
- Stir counter clockwise once
- Ladle a cup full and drink all at once, while still hot.
ooc: Peeves .... but here's the rest of the instructions up!! We'll have another question before class ends on Tuesday evening, so you have roughly 48 hours for any catchup posts

While Diego had been enjoying hammer time, he did make sure his cauldron had the 2 litres of water and unicorn tail hairs added. They were added in one by one as with the instructions, followed by having the heat on high with the dragon heart added in. Eventually when it boiled, the pomegranate was added in too before he turned the heater down to medium. With the multi-tasking, this gave the twelve-year-old enough time to make sure the griffin claw was nice and powdered for the remaining five minutes.
Diego smiled at the progress, so far, nothing was blown up or gave a foul smell. The next set of instructions came out. So this is where he was able to scoop up the powdered griffin claw. But first, he had to add the mixture slowly. Tipping it just enough to pour out in a slow run. Then when it was empty, he poured the powdered griffin claw immediately.
"Phew." Nothing bad happened. Now came the waiting... Diego checked to make sure the instructions were being followed as he collected the two snake fangs to be added next. After the clock got to ten minutes exactly, he dropped a snake fang in. He turned the heater off before squatting to blow out the remaining fire, then jumping up to a standing position again so he can add the last snake fang in. With how hot the concoction was, Diego imagined the fangs dissolved instantly. He stirred the solution counter-clockwise one time.
Now... to drink it. Diego took a cup's worth in the ladel before pouring it in. Drink it while hot... okay. Diego squeezed his nose incase it smelled horribly, as he began to drink it, fighting the urge to gag. Yuck. Plus with the heat, the roof of his mouth was steaming making his eyes water. After he was done he sighed in relief.

Bria wiped the heel of her hand against her robes, dusting off the last remnants of crushed griffin claw as she eyed her cauldron. The deep, rolling boil had settled into a steady simmer now, steam curling lazily into the air. Professor Adara's reassuring words momentarily distracted her - a good thing seeing as the Gryffndor's attention was brought to the board and the final set of instructions that appeared. She scanned them quickly and reached for the bowl of re’em and salamander blood, giving it one last cursory stir before beginning to pour it in a slow, steady stream. The thick liquid swirled into the potion, dark tendrils dripping through the mixture like ink in water. The moment the last drop fell in, she immediately grabbed the crushed griffin claw and tipped it in, dropping the bowl that had once contained the blood to the floor. The mixture hissed slightly, but settled just as quickly - so far, so good!
The next step: wait for ten minutes and add one snake fang.
Ten minutes. That was enough time to double-check her work so far. The potion wasn’t too difficult, but it certainly required a level of precision. She absently traced the edge of the table with a fingertip as she waited, mind flitting over each step she had taken. Water, unicorn hairs, dragon heart, heat, blood mixture, griffin claw...
Her fingers froze.
The pomegranate.
Her stomach dropped.
Bria's eyes darted to her workstation, where the plump, untouched fruit sat like an accusation oozing with shame and ridicule. She had told herself she’d go back to it after the claw, but then she'd gotten caught up in grinding and then the professor had spoken and... and... and she swallowed hard. Could she fix it? Maybe if she added it now? Would it still bind properly? Probably not. Would it alter the potion's effects? All odds pointed to yes. Bria stared at the pomegranate as if willing it to disappear. Maybe if she blinked hard enough, she'd realize she hadn’t forgotten it. Maybe this was some bizarre trick of the steam curling around her face, making her doubt herself, the fumes making her see things.
But no. It sat there, untouched. A vital ingredient... completely ignored.
Her breath hitched as realization crashed over her. She had ruined it. Not just her potion. All of it. The unicorn hairs, shed freely but still precious. The salamander blood, taken from a creature that needed it far more than she did. The griffin claw, the snake fangs, the re’em blood... every single thing that had been harvested, gathered, and given up. All wasted because she had forgotten a step - because she had been too arrogant about her ability to multitask and lied to herself about how patient she was. Her hands trembled as she braced them on the table, her stomach twisting. These weren't just ingredients - they had once been part of something living. And she had just tossed them into a cauldron only to mess it all up and for what?
Her eyes burned. She sniffled, hastily swiping at her face before anyone could see, but it was useless. Her vision blurred, her shoulders shaking despite her best efforts to keep it together. She could feel her parents' voices in the back of her mind: her father’s reverence for magical creatures, her mother’s careful hands in the greenhouse, teaching her to never take more than was needed. And here she was, reducing all of it to nothing because she hadn't been paying enough attention. A quiet, stifled sob escaped before she could swallow it down, and she immediately curled over her workstation, pretending to be studying and adding to her notes.

It was Diego who finished first and bravely without second thoughts took a drink of the potion. She hadn't even really properly assessed it to see if the final colour was a bright yellow. Something she had actually left out of the latest instructions and maybe should have informed them. She did note the facial expressions which were enough to say that it wasn't the most pleasant of tastes. However long it lasted was to be determined but at least there seemed to be no glaring side effects.
She couldn't spend too much time though as she noted the despair in Bria's expressions and it took all of two seconds to realize why, as the young first year tried to conceal her sadness. There was to be a final question but seeing how distraught the young gryffindor was, Professor Adara threw that all out the window. It was all she could to do to keep from enveloping the girl in one of her motherly embraces that she so desperately wanted to do. Alas keeping that student-professor relationship particularly with first years, she went over and squatted in front of her work table to be at eye level, speaking quietly to just the young girl. "Bria. I just wanted to say, please don't stress too much," her head inclined at the pomegranate sitting on her desk. "I know it's easy to work yourself up with things don't go as planned, but mistakes happen to all of us. Sometimes a mistake though is one of the best ways to learn - you'd be horrified if I told you how many times I made a mistake. Fortunately the pomegranate does just work to enhance the rejuvenation aspect of the strength potion, so I do believe you still have brewed a strength potion but I wouldn't recommend trying to lift a car or anything. And its effects will likely be shorter in duration." So in case she wished to try the potion, she still could sample it for a less potent version of the strength potion.
Rising up she returned to the front of the classroom to address everyone as a whole. "Unfortunately we're out of time for the day, but if you haven't sampled your potions yet it will have a somewhat metal taste. Likely because of the salamander and re'em blood, it's good a source of iron or if you're anemic, but unfortunately it only offers a temporary treatment until you can get a more permanent source of iron. Drinking more does not give you a longer duration, however once you feel it's wearing off you can drink another cup. Drinking too much at once could give adverse effects such dizziness." Amelia glanced over at her notes, "If you don't need it right away you can store it up to a week after brewing but add a cup of ice to preserve it. The first few minutes after drinking, sit and let your body and muscles adjust. Once you feel acclimated, you can go and test your strength."
"If you have no other questions, you're dismissed. If you'd like to stay and finish up your potions, you're welcome to stay or come back another time if you have another lesson."
ooc: thanks for participating ... we'll keep an eye on here for any questions or last minute catchup brews, but the thread will close tomorrow evening.

Satisfied with her mixing, Nadia switched to crushing the griffin claw between mortar and pestle as Professor Adara complimented her work. Soon enough the five minutes were up thank Merlin, and it was time to move on. Into the cauldron she poured the blood mixture slowly and carefully. When it was nearly done, she grabbed her mortar with her free hand to add the powdered claw once the last drop fell into her cauldron. Now there was more waiting…ten minutes of it…so the Gryffindor glanced at her watch to time it as she perched on her stool to wait.
Once 10 minutes had passed in went one snake fang. Then she reached and turned the heat off before adding the other. Grabbing her stirring rod, Nadia gave her brewing potion one counter clockwise stir as directed…just one…before switching rod for a ladle to take her sample. She eyed it for a moment, wondering just how the effects would make her feel. Bottom’s up. She braced herself and took it in one go, thankful for the action when Professor Adara spoke up once more to wrap up the lesson, describing the taste. Finished with her work, she moved to bottle the rest of her potion and clean up, mindful that if she were to use it, careful of not to take it right before a quidditch match. She certainly didn’t want to be seen as cheating.

Bria swallowed hard, her face burning as she stared down at the pomegranate, her fingers curling slightly against the table’s edge. She hated that she had been caught so obviously -hated even more that she had let herself get this worked up in the first place. She knew mistakes were part of learning. She knew that even the best potion-makers had messed up plenty of times and that it was literally impossible to never make a mistake. But that didn’t make this sting any less. It didn’t erase the sinking guilt gnawing at her ribs, the feeling that she had let the ingredients down, had wasted something valuable because she hadn’t been careful enough.
Bria sniffled, ducking her head slightly. "I just…" Her voice wavered, frustration bubbling beneath her embarrassment. She let out a breath, rubbing the heel of her palm against her eye before forcing herself to meet the professor’s gaze. "I should have caught it. I should have realized before it was too late. It just feels…" She hesitated, struggling to find the right words. "Careless." Her lips pressed together, frustration still simmering under her ribs. But she could also feel the professor’s kindness, her understanding. And she appreciated it. Really appreciated it - even if she might not be doing the best at showing it currently. Bria exhaled slowly, nodding. "Okay," she murmured, still a little defeated but trying to take the reassurance to heart. At least it was still a potion. Even if it wasn’t right. Even if it wasn’t what it should have and could have been been.
Still, the thought of drinking it made her stomach twist. She didn’t deserve to benefit from something she had messed up. "…maybe I’ll just try a little," she added after a pause, rubbing at her nose before attempting to straighten up. And maybe she would just eat the pomegranate on its own so that too wasn't wasted.
Bria exhaled slowly once again, glancing down at the potion she had carefully ladled into a phial after receiving that very much needed peptalk - the pomegranate, likewise, when into a seperate phial. She then secured the phials in her bag, deciding it was best to test it later - preferably with Professor Adara present, just in case. No sense in risking a mishap on her own and putting that responsibility on her house prefects who certainly had not signed up for dealing with the consequences of her brewing. With a small, appreciative nod toward the professor, Bria quickly cleaned up her workstation before slipping out of the classroom. She had another lesson to get to and pep to put back in her step before she got there.
