Default Library Stacks and Study Tables

A maze of thousands upon thousands of books, the library is heaven to any book-lover. Upon entering the high-ceilinged room, the smell of books, both ancient and new, hits you. There are many tall, narrow shelves neatly lined up, each divided into different sections -- charms, potions, Muggles, fiction, and so on. If you find a book you're interested in, simply make use of the sliding ladder or summon the book with Accio to retrieve it.

The library just isn't a labyrinth of books and limited to study and research. In the heart of the library resides a seating area or two designated for quiet reading and perhaps the occasional polite book discussion. Professor Gert has made it a point to refresh the nooks to encourage more use within the comfy space and provide a welcoming home for the Bookworms now under her care. All are welcome, of course, not just those who chose to get involved within the extracurriculars.

Scattered among and on the outskirts of it are tables and chairs designated for quiet research some with accompanying fireplaces or large stained glass windows. Tucked away in the very back of the library is the Restricted Section, which requires a key that the librarian keeps on his person at all times and permission to enter because of the more mature titles and content that are tightly locked and chained within. At the entrance stands the front desk where the school librarian can usually be found, who will happily recommend a book, check out a book for you, and help you with any of your library needs.

OOC: Please do not play for the Librarian: Holmesian Feline.

Roman had a meeting on the first day of classes before lunch with Kenneth. His new friend, he was sure, was looking forward to exploring the stacks. It was honestly one of the biggest residency of books he had ever been privy to, and his grey eyes widened round as dinner plates.

"....whoah..." he whispered to himself as he stopped in the middle of the study tables. He didn't want to start exploring and then Kenneth not be able to find him, so he placed his backpack on a chair and waited patiently for the arrival of Kenneth.

I didn't know so many books could even exist in one space. Well, I knew it, but really, this is a lot of books. And even though Regina wouldn't even begin to understand his excitement, he decided he would tell her about it in his first letter anyway. She would at least, hopefully, be happy that he had been placed in the house he wanted AND that he had a place full of books at his disposal. He wondered what Regina would write him about. Her classes being either difficult or easy for her to manage, or how many friends she was making. Regina, like their older sister Victoria, quite liked to dance, and so he hoped Beauxbatons had some sort of club or team for that. If not, he was sure Regina would perish, or she'd dramatically threaten that she might perish.

The thought made him chuckle softly to himself. It was hard not being with her, but he thought he might get used to it, soon. Was it as difficult for Regina? She wouldn't admit it even if it were, but he would ask regardless. Maybe the separation would make her more affectionate toward him, and him her.

Kenneth didn't have trouble finding the library. The toilets? Those he'd had trouble with. But the books...he had figured they'd be somewhere centrally located, convenient for professors to reference but not so in the middle of things that'd there'd be commotion just from people existing nearby. And he had something of an innate sense of direction around books. Not a sixth sense...maybe just his sense of smell.

Or, if he'd stop lying to himself about this 'connection' with books, he'd remember he'd asked for directions.

Expecting a library and entering the Hogwarts library were two very different experiences. He'd essentially grown up in a library, his uncle's, but this... there were so many more books. And they were a lot older-looking than most of his uncle's books, too. Kenneth briefly forgot he was supposed to be meeting his...friend? He thought he would be happy skipping classes and just picking up a book and reading it. He read a few of the spines and grimaced. These titles were weird. He'd never heard of half the topics. And where did 'potions recipes' fall under the Dewey decimal system? He feared he'd have to learn this library's method of organization from scratch.

Hearing a chuckle from around the corner, Kenneth peeked around a stack of books. It was Roman! Ronan? R...something. "Rone!" Kenneth compromised, rhyming with phone as he whispering energetically at the other boy to get his attention. Was this how nicknames were created? Because people only remembered half of someone's name?

RONE?! Roman looked aghast, his insistence that his twin was the dramatic one and NOT one fresh in his mind. He had insisted this to Charlie, and Charlie had suggested that might not be the case, and that alone was why Roman did not react toooooooooooo much to the offense, but his face showed it all. "Rone? You don't remember my name?" Roman furrowed his eyebrows, scoffed, and crossed his arms. "And I made space in my memory for yours, Kenneth." So Kenneth should feel a smidge of guilt, here.

He gestured at the books. "Despite not knowing my name, you at least found the library. What do you think?" he asked as he headed for one of the shelves, equally as confused about what the organization system was in here. Alphabetically, sure, but what categories?

Roman made mental note to mention this to Regina. She would know all his gripes about his first week. He was jotting things down in his journal to keep track, and he'd be adding the RONE OFFENSE to his list.

If Kenneth had had more experience interacting with people his own age, he might have clocked Roman's facial expression as a cause for alarm. Luckily, the other boy's words said it all. "Of course I remember your name," Kenneth said quickly, which was 80% true. He remembered the whole name, except for that one little letter in the middle. "I was trying out Rone as a nickname, but...if you don't like it...I'll stick to Roman." Fine. He'd committed. He really hoped it was an M in the middle, and not an N. It was a metaphorical coin toss.

He sighed contentedly as he looked at the books Roman gestured at. This felt like home, almost as much as his new dorm did. It was cozy in a different sort of way than the Hufflepuff common room, though, this was less about being someplace that provided physical comforts and fuzzy blankets, and more like...how he imagined being surrounded by friends in a new place would be. "I think...I hope I have time to read all these books!" his voice got a little loud for a moment there, but Kenneth realized and even shushed himself.

Even if he spent all his free time for the next seven school years reading, he wasn't sure he'd be able to read every book in this library. "What are you going to read first?"

Roman didn't buy it for one millisecond, but he decided he would let Kenneth keep his dignity. So, sure, whatever, Kenneth. "I don't like nicknames," he said seriously before looking back at the books. A fat chance that Kenneth and Roman combined would even be able to read all these books in their seven years, here. "Time? I wonder if not, if we could procure a list of all the titles in the library and scratch them as we go. Then, when we graduate, we could continue to read all those books until we're done." That seemed much more realistic than racing to finish all of them before they graduated. His suggestion was serious, too. He really DID want to ask about a list.

His eyes instantly went to the Restricted Section, and he wondered if and when he'd be allowed to enter. There was something rather dictator-y about censorship of books, and Roman found himself scrunching his face up at the thought. Hmph.

As for what he would read first, he looked back at Kenneth and then headed for the shelves immediately in front of them. "See, I don't know where to find fiction. Do you know they only have informational texts here? I was really hoping to read more mysteries by magical authors," he said, musing about the same quest he had had over the summer in Flourish and Blotts.

"Right. No nicknames," Kenneth said, making himself a mental note that he'd be metaphorically transfiguring into a physical note once he got back to his dorm and it became no longer weird (or at least no longer obvious) to make notes about his....friends? "I bet the librarian has a list," he said. His uncle definitely had a list of all the books in his library. How else would either of them know if all the books were there? He thought Roman was awfully smart, to keep track from a list. He wondered if he'd have to get a new notebook to keep track of which books he'd read.

He followed Roman toward the shelves, where he tapped a few spines and then selected the dustiest looking book at eye level. The title was in...Latin, he was fairly certain. He opened the book to find a table of contents, or an index, coughing a little at the dust. "I think this one is about charms," he said, scanning the contents. "No...history? Really old charms." He wasn't sure if that made it charms or history. He did sort of want to check out the book and read it, though, so he didn't put it back.

"Maybe fiction is near there?" He pointed at a section about halfway between them and the Restricted Section. He was absolutely guessing, but how would they learn the organizational system without looking at random books? That was how he'd learned how his uncle organized his books, by trial and error.

Funnily enough, Roman would have found nothing odd about taking notes on new friends. How else was one to keep track of every detail? No, nothing odd at all. "I can ask them in a bit..." he said simply, not wanting to waste anymore precious time being not IN the shelves, looking at titles.

He stood next to Kenneth and peered over his friend's shoulder at the Latin book of, well, probably spells. Or something old like spells. "Whoah...it's really old. Is there publishing information on the front cover? Inside it?" he asked, not wanting to touch the book for Kenneth in case it was so old it fell apart. Surely, though, the books weren't that rare or old if they were readily available on the shelves. He was starting to find, however, that nothing should surprise him at Hogwarts.

"I don't know." He palmed a book spine near them and pulled it out gently, very gently. "Oh.......this is in Latin, too!" he said, and he looked in this section. "Is this the Latin section?"

Thank goodness for house elves and their incredible cleaning magic. Celeste was sure the library would be far dustier if it weren’t within their power to keep the large space and its contents so clean. Well, that and the occasional impervious spells the astronomy professor-turned-librarian believed she couldn’t be the first of her position to think of adding in case of messes. Both made her life easier and the place healthier for books and students alike. Which left her the task of returning books to shelves which was far more up her alley.

Pushing a small cart down one of the tall aisles, Celeste went to work shelving each tome where it was supposed to go and using magic when the space was too far up. She fought the urge to hum as she went about the task like she might have in her own library, cautious of disturbing anyone around. The occasional soft squeak of one of the cart's wheels was enough of a sound.

Kenneth was much less worried about the book falling apart than his friend was. He flipped a few pages back from the table of contents, keeping an eye out for any numbers or something that could be a publisher. There was the title of the book, right, they knew that already... and that page looked like a dedication or something... He pointed, finally spotting a number. "It's the third edition," he said, once he'd actually read it and realized it wasn't a year. He decided he didn't really care how old it was. He'd have plenty of time to read the whole book once he'd checked it out...assuming that this was a book that could be checked out.

And if not, he'd already been planning to spend all of his free time in the library, so... it would not be a big deal.

He looked at the book Roman had chosen. He didn't know very much about wizarding literature, but given that he knew lots of Muggle academic literature used to be written in Latin, he thought it might just be a coincidence that both books were in Latin. "I wonder if the whole library is in Latin," he mused. It didn't seem likely. He hadn't noticed a Latin course on his schedule, and if the whole library was in Latin, he was sure that it would be a required class.

Now that he thought about it, he wished it had been a class for first years. It would probably be the only one he'd have any sort of a head start in.

"Does it look like another charms history?" he asked. If it was about the same thing as the first one they'd looked at, then it probably wasn't a Latin section.

Roman snorted at Kenneth's inquiry. "I highly doubt it. That wouldn't make much sense unless we had a magical translator of some sort, which it seems like we do not." He shrugged and put the Latin book back. "I don't know what exactly, but maybe," he said about the book being another Charms book. "Let's go to the next row," he suggest quietly before slipping past Kenneth and heading to the next row over.

The smell of old books comforted Roman, and the quietness of the library with the whispers and lulls of soft noises was soothing to him. There were only a few students on the other side of the library right now, and Roman and Kenneth were the only students in the shelves right now. "Ah. This one isn't in Latin, Kenneth," he said as he pulled a book from the shelf and found that it was a history of the Goblin Rebellions. "Whoah. Wicked amount of information in this one." He had flipped open to a page with paragraphs about a singular goblin from the second rebellion.

Histories were interesting; however, Roman was craving a murder mystery. There HAD to be fun books, right? Or rather, books that were FOR fun, not just for studying? Not just textbooks?

Kenneth disregarded Roman's snort. He had known, almost as soon as he said it, that it was a silly question. Though he was not one to know whether a magical translator existed. In fact, it surprised him that they didn't have one. He wondered if he was overestimating how much Roman knew about magic. Sure, the other boy had grown up around more magic than him, but that didn't mean he was an expert. He was, after all, only eleven years old.

Still, he followed him to the next row of books, noting from the titles that this seemed to be a section about Goblins. He made a mental note about it, after having seen the Goblins at Gringotts he wanted to learn more about them. But not today! Today they were looking for mystery books.

He walked towards the other side of the library, pausing at each row to check titles, where he could see them on the binding.

"I think this section is about mysteries," he said, pulling out a book titled A Robbery at Gringotts. He held it up for Roman to see. "Is this fiction?"

....did Kenneth say fiction?

Roman was there in a millisecond, scarily and quietly fast. He peered over Kenneth's shoulder to see the title, A Robbery at Gringotts, and nearly snatched the book from the other boy's hands as he flipped the book over to read the back. His eyes steeled back and forth like ping pong balls as he read. "This IS fiction. AND it's a mystery!" he looked triumphantly over at Kenneth and nudged him. "Good work, detective," he said with a smirk before tucking the novel under his arm.

He was pleased. He could be happy, now, knowing the library at Hogwarts housed more than informational texts. It housed actual books, stories, villains and plots.

His eyes glazed over as he saw a row of books dedicated to someone called "Mysti Cove," which upon further inspected seemed to be a detective series about a witch at a fictional magical academy solving spooky mysteries whilst on her summer vacations in various locations. He pulled the first one from the shelf and gasped. "This...this is like Nancy Drew. Have you heard of her? It's a muggle series," he whisper excitedly.

He didn’t often venture into the library, mainly because he was always on the go, but returning for his sixth year, Hooper was more determined to do well with his studies so that he could one day become an auror. It had been a dream of his for the longest of times, although it had taken a different form when he was younger. Now as a sixth year however, he’d finally set his sights on working in the ministry and away from the coast where his parents lived.

Today however, he wasn’t working on anything school related, or at least, not at the moment. Today, he was working on a letter to his parents. One had already been written and had already been sealed within an envelope and the other was in the process of being written. If only he could actually focus on the letter. Sitting at one of the tables near a fireplace to stay warm, Hooper had become distracted by the dancing flames and had instead, started crumpling up scrap pieces of parchment that he’d doodled on and was throwing them into the hearth.

The fact that the Library was becoming one of her most frequented haunts this term was something that Vera never in a million years would have expected. If she HAD expected it, she might have been wise enough to not push off all of her homework and keeping up in classes for the past 4 years so that she didn't have to try to make everything up in a single term. If she was going to write a letter to younger Vera, that's probably exactly what she would have advised on. But considering using time turners for that type of situation was heavily frowned upon (and think of all the shenanigans that she might have erased!), she was just going to have to lie in the bed she'd made herself.

Which was apparently in the library.

A stack of History books in her arms for a paper she needed to write for History of Magic, she made her way over towards the study tables - noticing one of the comfy chairs was still open alongside her house mate. Making her way that direction, she plopped herself dramatically down - letting the books make a loud thunk as they hit her lap. "Hi Hoop. Are OWLs as really bad as everyone leads us to believe? Like, in your expert I've-already-taken-them opinion, if I just was to stop studying now for the term could I at least getting passing grades?"

Kenneth startled as Roman appeared beside him. The library was so quiet, how had he not heard him? He wondered if there was some sort of spell on the library to make unavoidable sounds like footsteps not bother people. He preferred that explanation to Roman being scarily quiet.

The boy smiled proudly at Roman's praise, punny though it was. He leaned over Roman's shoulder, ignoring any personal space boundaries, to see the book. "Yes, I've heard of Nancy Drew," he said simply. "This is a magical Nancy Drew?" He wondered if lots of Muggle authors and books had wizarding equivalents. He hoped so, as it probably doubled the number of stories and books in the universe that awaited him. "Is there a magical Shakespeare, too?" Oops, he hadn't meant to say that so loudly.

Watching the letter he’d just crumpled and thrown in the fire catch and burn, Hooper hadn’t initially caught sight of his fellow Gryffindor so when Vera sat down with a loud thunk, Hooper gave a little start and jumped, taking a second to focus on her. Turning and blinking several times in hope that it would help him focus, Hooper eventually managed to crack a small smile at Vera. “S’up Vera?” he asked, however it came out more as a mumble, her onslaught of questions covering it up well and truly.

O.W.L’s.

Now that they were over and he’d actually sat them and was out the other side, they didn’t seem too bad, although at the time, they felt about the worst thing a fifth year could imagine, especially one as distractable as him. “Honestly, they’re pretty grim. Learning five years of work, only for most of it not to come up is just…” Leaning closer to the fire, Hooper pretended to vomit into in hopes that this would get his point over. “But y’know, you could just stop and not study. See how it goes. Might be a laugh,” and by a laugh, he meant her results. “I wouldn’t recommend it,” he added finally, just to make sure she for sure knew where he stood on that idea. Knowing his luck, she’d take him seriously and he’d end up getting in trouble.

While her entrance had been on the rude side (like 80% of her entrances, really), she still at least took the time to return the older Gryffindor’s smile - though his verbal greeting was indeed covered up by all the word vomit she spilled as she had taken her seat.

His point was very well conveyed as the girl groaned and dropped her whole body into the back of the chair behind her, head hitting against it as she stared at the ceiling for a minute. It was really too bad they couldn’t give them a more focused study guide for what to actually expect to have to review on the OWLs. Sure, the Professors tried to highlight certain parts but… there were still other things that could show up. And it was that giant ‘could’ that stressed her out. “When you actually took the exams, was it easier than you’d been expecting in the leading up to them?” She sat back up again, over a portion of her dramatics in favor of actually having a conversation. “Yeeaaaah. I did that for like the past 4 years. So we might be able to get that laugh in anyways.” She replied, giving a grim smile. If only she knew what she knew now at 12 years old. It would have been much easier if she’d only slacked a few months.

“What brings you to the library today?”

“What brings you to the library today?”
Hooper did his best to think back to when he sat his O.W.L’s but for some reason, his mind which was usually so vivid and teeming with detail was actually failing him. Instead of memories being stressed over revision and exams and worrying about which questions might come up, all Hooper’s mind could conjure was images of his parents bickering and a look of confusion on his best friend’s face. Doing his best to ignore this however and summon something from that time that didn’t cause him pain, he rearranged his face to a more sympathetic expression. “I think it’s easier. Nothing is ever as bad as you think it’ll be. It’s hard not knowing what’ll come up but if you can get over not knowing, you’ll be fine. So y’know, nothing too difficult,” a quiet, small chuckle now, not wanting to draw any unwanted attention.

He was somewhat surprised that she’d managed to get through the last few years not revising at all. O.W.L’s may be a little challenging, unless she was a secret Ravenclaw. “Oh, really? No revising at all? That’s pretty impressive honestly. I didn’t do much for my O.W/L’s really but my memory is on point,” which felt a tad braggy but not highlighting this strength also felt a little silly.

What did him here today? Gesturing to the fire across from them, Hooper sighed a little, crumpled up another piece of paper and tossed it into the fire and watched as the flames caught instantly. The ink that had been scribbled over the parchment was causing the colours of the flames to change slightly, from reds and yellows to that of green and blue. “I’ve been trying to write a letter but I just…can’t find the words.” The letter was to his parents but his heart simply wasn’t into it.

Aurora was sat in the strangest of places for the Ravenclaw..

..the l i b r a r y.

It wouldn’t necessarily be an odd location considering they were in a school and it was where all the books were kept but Aurora RARELY enjoyed reading and could think of plenty of other places she’d prefer to be.

But the past month had seen her visit more and more, curling up in the corner of the vast room with a book in her hand and ignoring everyone walking by. On the table in front of her was another copy of the same book she was presently perusing as well as two quills and two pieces of parchment. Don’t ask her why she needed two but she felt it important that everything be in pairs. The weather was beautiful outside, the spring sunshine blaring its way through the windows but the third year was as far away from the light as possible.

Perhaps strangely of all, Aurora was completely silent and hadn’t opened her mouth once to even squeak let alone talk.

Not knowing didn’t especially bother her she supposed. But now that she had something she actually wanted to DO, the results of OWLs and what her options would be for continuing her education past this term was stressing her out a little bit. Wouldn’t it be just her luck to settle on an idea outside of Professional Sports and then not actually have the intellect to accomplish it? “Fair enough. Thank you for the advice!” It was nice of him to share his own knowledge, regardless of the fact she felt maybe even MORE like she was on the verge of spiral and ruin.

But then again, she was also commonly dramatic.

She was not a secret Ravenclaw. But she DID have a Ravenclaw that was helping her focus and catch up everywhere she needed to. Thank goodness for her twin brother, or she’d be even more lost. “There was too many other things to do than have to do homework. I mean… i did classwork and if the subject was SUPER interesting I’d do stuff outside of class too but for the most part? I’d rather explore.” And there had been plenty of adventures to accomplish. It was braggy perhaps, but if you had a skill why NOT boast about it? “That’s really lucky! To you have like one of those photogenic memory things?”

She heard this sigh and her head tilted slightly in question as she focused a bit more. Did he seem a little less energetic than he usually was in the Commons? It was hard to determine for certain. She glanced over at the fire too when he threw the paper in his hand in, watching in awe as the colors changed. “Who are you writing to that’s making it so hard?”

She was really beginning to wish for some sense of normalcy with the house elves. For no matter how many cleaning spells she used or others she cast to try and protect areas from dust bunnies, Celeste felt the library, and plenty of other spots in Hogwarts for that matter, was just as bad as before the magic took hold. Why just a few days before she had had to majorly scourge the Astronomy tower around the main telescope to keep it working properly otherwise the classes would have suffered more than the messes already did.

With a sigh and a sneeze, the astronomy professor-turned library went to work on the stacks near the front of the library having cycled through the other areas already this week. Her wand out as she climbed up one of the ladders to begin at the top and work her way down. The better to let the flurries fall to the ground and not on the clean areas she had already worked on with the gravity of the room working for her.

"Achoo!"

As tasked, Dhruv successfully delivered the group of children, which included Desiree and Emma, to the Library. Their only goal now? It was to find himself the cleanest, neatest spot in the library so that they may carry out their supervising to the best of their ability. So filthy, like the rest of the Castle, was the library that it was quite unsurprising to happen upon the sneeze as they and the children headed further into the room. Gone was the scent of old books, which seemed to have evaporated due to the musky odour emitting from the grime. At least this was Dhruv’s observation.

“Ah, Professor Gert,’’ they greeted pleasantly enough though their voice had no trace of warmth. “I see you’re getting some cleaning done but you’re in luck. I have brought you some volunteers who are quite enthusiastic about having the Castle back in tiptop shape.” At this point, Dhruv gestured to the children. “Do you have any special instructions for them?”

Desiree followed Professor Khanna, Emma, and the rest of their group to the library. Although she hated to see the library in this state, cleaning was the last thing on her mind now. She was more interested in the mysterious Ewart and why two people who were acting strangely just happened to know that name!

She was more than a little relieved to see Professor Gert - if there was something to this Ewart mystery, she thought Gert was more likely to believe it than Khanna! “Hello, Professor Gert," she greeted with a polite smile, keeping the greeting brief so as not to interrupt any instructions.

As Desiree awaited further directions, she glanced behind her to see if Emma made it here. She was still on board with their research plan, right?

Using a handkerchief to blow her nose after the last sneeze, Celeste looked down at the call of her name to spot her colleague leading students into the library. “Guid day,” she greeted warmly even if Dhruv’s own seemed off as she vanished the offensive fabric and started to climb down the ladder. “Aye that I am.” Voluntee---AH the SPEW activity that Amelia had mentioned arranging. The one she had gotten distracted in her own work to help out earlier on like she had originally planned.

It seemed it found her instead.

“Perfect!” she remarked, turning briefly to the Hufflepuff at her greeting. “Hello Ms. Marchand.” Now for the instructions, the librarian looking around her rather humbled and dusty domain. “Weel the only thing special for th’library is obviously naw modes of cleaning involving water.” Unless it was carefully limited to the stained glass windows that lined part of the exterior perimeter. “That an if cleaning from a height, be careful on th’ladders. “ Casting magic while balancing on them was something not to play around with.
