Before it got toooo cold, Javier wanted to have a little s'mores party out on the grounds. It was later at night, just after sunset - not so late that they had to worry about staying up too late, but dark enough out that they could see the moon and stars brightly. His little gathering was nothing too crazy - just a big bonfire, your typical s'mores fixings, and a table full of potions off to the side.

Yes, there was a table of potions posted near the side of the bonfire. There was a purpose to this whole thing, as a sort of introduction to other activities they'd be offering the kids later in the term. Participating in the potions activity was purely optional, and students could hang out by the bonfire and make s'mores at the nearby s'more station instead. The long table had graham crackers, chocolate bars, and giant marshmallows - plus long sticks to help roast them on the large bonfire Javi had set up.

As for the potions, a large vial of each one was set up on the table with a place card in front of it labeling the potion. A larger place card was posted at the head of the table with the instructions:

Each of these potions have a common element - can you guess what it is? Write your guess on a piece of parchment and drop it in the box!

There was a small cardboard box set up at the corner of the table for students to drop their guesses, if they were so inclined. Was there a prize for guessing it right? Just the prize of feeling confident in yourself!

The potions, from left to right, were as follows - polyjuice potion, vaxifloo, Un-Felix Un-Felicis, Wolfsbane and the Animal Whisperer potion. If students weren't super familiar with them, the descriptions of potions could always be found in their books - if they happened to have them on them for a fun bonfire night!

Javier was waiting by the fire, roasting a marshmallow on one of the sticks as he waved to the first students who came down.

"God kväll, professor,'' Charlie greeted Hernandez as he arrived at the scene of the evening's festivities. Said greeting meant 'Good Evening, professor', by the way, in Swedish. It was Char's tradition to greet the professors in his native tongue. Anyway, he was grinning a great deal because while he wasn't crazy about s'mores, he did enjoy a nice night out. After all, he was an outdoors-y lad.

Having taken some time to survey the instructions on the table, the seventh year stood there for a bit pondering on the potions; the ingredients, to be precise. It wasn't long before Charlie snapped his fingers as the answer hit him. Each potion contains Fluxweed along with his name were scribbled on a piece of parchment and dropped into the box.

Easy peasy.

Professor Hernandez had her participation at the word 'S'mores' though as Vera approached she was a little leery of the Potions guessing game. Were they going to be graded on that? Because as she'd told Daxon, she was not a potioneer. Recipes were hard to follow, which was why her chocolates too always were off the book.

Seeing not many others were yet in attendance, just an older student she did not know well, Ve went for the table and glanced over it. What did they have in common? Well, lucky for her she had an answer for that. Grabbing a strip of parchment, she quickly scrawled out her answer and dropped it into the box. All of them are liquids. Was it the answer Hernandez was looking for? Almost 100% not. But was she wrong?

With that completed, she headed over towards the older student (Charlie) and stopped next to him - feeling quite short next to a seventh year at her 5 foot frame. "So what was the actual answer for the potions?" He was a seventh year. He HAD to know, right?

No one told her she needed her textbook for this. Folake stood by the potions table watching the older students write their answers. She was just a first year, she'd only just gotten there, how would she know? She didn't expect Professor Javier to pull this kind of stunt but this was a lesson in the man she was sure to remember. Obviously, he wasn't doing this to spite her personally, she just felt he could have given them a heads-up so she could have opted out of the lesson part of this excursion instead of being left out because of ignorance. Would it not be sporting to go and grab her textbook and find the exact right answer while everyone ate s'mores? She drummed her skinny little fingers on the table eyeing as the older students slip their notes in the box. Maybe she could make sure no one cheated? She could be Professor Javier's helper, so next time he'd give her the heads up.

"No sharing answers..." She piped up to two fifth? years chatting as they made their guesses

Desiree had no idea what to make of this little gathering. Not only was she surprised that Porfesor Hernandez was giving out s’mores, but she had no clue what s’mores had to do with potions! Whatever the relation was, if there was a chance it could help her improve her potions marks, she was up for it. This was the OWL she was most worried about failing, and she’d need a passing mark if she was going to become a healer.

“Hi, Professor,” she greeted with a polite smile. Cue more smiles and waves for the other students gathered (Charlie, Vera & Folake). “Hi, everybody!”

Desiree eyed the potions on the table with a mildly intrigued expression. Polyjuice potion, vaxifloo, Un-felix Un-felicis, Wolfsbane, and Animal Whisperer potion… What did they all have in common? She thought for several moments, struggling to recall the ingredients to each one. Of the five, she was most familiar with vaxifloo and the Wolfsbane potion, those two being essential to any healer’s arsenal. She knew those two contained fluxweed, and she was pretty sure the Polyjuice and Animal Whisperer potions did too. The only one she wasn’t sure about was Un-Felix Un-Felicis. Unable to think of anything else it could possibly be, she jotted down her answer and placed it in the box: Fluxweed.

Having learned her lesson from the reactions the previous term, when a certain owl made her way down from her tower, the raptor was mindful of how close she was to the students. With a final flap and landing a short distance from those already gathered, one astronomy professor soon appeared, slowly striding closer to the bonfire on soft shoe-covered feet. “Guid evening,” she greeted Javier and the quartet of students, her soft pleasant brogue mirroring the smile on her face. Noting the table of potions the potions master had set up, Celeste couldn’t help but be curious to how the gathering turned out. She did have a vested interest after all.

S’mores and the outdoors…count her in.

Didn’t hurt that there was a potions element that might please her daddy that she was attending. So she made her way down to the grounds from the tower, the final location pretty obvious given the bonfire could be seen from a distance even before she was close enough to feel the heat generated from flickering light and flames. “Hello Professors,” Nadia greeted both Hernandez and Gert with a nod of acknowledgement. “Hi,” the second year added a touch more eagerly towards Vera as she approached the older girl, taking in the scene around them.

Char watched as more students arrived and quickly took part in answering the question asked of them. However, he was not surprised when Vera approached him, wanting to know the answer. He threw her a quizzical look along with a smirk. “They all are on the Hogwarts syllabus,’’ he provided. Because Folake was absolutely correct: there would be no sharing answers. Not on his part, at least. “What she said.” Smiling now, Charlie offered the two a smile, which shortly afterwards extended to Desiree. “Hi, Des.”

“Wonder what the prize will be for those who get the right answer,’’ U17 Quidditch player mused in general. “Then again, Hernandez just might give everyone who participates a prize.” Hogwarts professors were nice like that. Speaking of which… “Good evening, professor Gert.” Yes, it was the usual greeting in Swedish. The English adults would be used to this by now.

Was Aurora a little skeptical when she read the announcement about a s’mores party in the grounds with Professor Hernandez? Yes. The reason being that the last time there was an extra curricular activity with the Groundskeeper/Potions Professor she was viciously ~~attacked~~ growled at by evil gnomes targeting her. Aurora had barely grown over the summer and was still that petite little blonde who would probably become the target of whatever wanted to attack her.

Still, with a brave face on she headed out to the grounds to join her peers. The twelve year old wasn’t entirely sure what a S’more was but she knew it involved campfires and marshmallows and it all sounded yummy. She didn’t particularly know anyone that well who had gathered in the vicinity with the exception of Vera who the second year instantly gravitated towards. “Hi!” she grinned. She overheard the first year saying something about not sharing answers and rolled her eyes just a little bit. Her Mum’s had always said sharing was caring and it wasn’t like it was a lesson anyway so it wouldn’t matter if they didn’t know the answer, right?

It had taken a lot of effort to drag Fynley off the sofa in the common room and out into the grounds but here he was. It wasn’t that he was unsociable and didn’t want to be around people, in fact the Slytherin was quite the opposite. It was actually because the boy had been up late the night before finishing the homework that had been due early that morning much to the annoyance of his dorm mates he was sure.

The promise of an American delicacy that reminded him of his years at Ilvermorny was motivation enough however and here he was. He directed a nod towards Charlie who he was familiar with before looking at the card on the table with the instructions.

Was he going to bother with that? Absolutely not. Fynn didn’t do work that wasn’t absolutely necessary.

The first year piping up had amused Vera, and her facial expression probably showed as much as she scanned the card with the instructions again before giving a small shrug. "I don't see anything that says you can't discuss your answers after submitting them." Actually, she didn't see anything either about discussing answers BEFORE submitting so either Hernandez did not mind either way since this was not an official lesson or it had been an oversight. Either way though, she saw the loop hole so she was going to point it out - even if no one telling her what she put in truly perturbed her.

Seeing another older student (Desiree) in Maria's house, Vera gave a smile and a wave her direction when she offered greeting before her attention turned back to the Seventh Year. "Oooh that's a good one." But she liked her answer better, mainly because she was quite certain it was actually accurate. What if one of the others wasn't on the syllabus? Did he think she looked at that? Hearing his agreement with the first year, she fought to roll her eyes at the lack of initiative to help fellow peers and instead turned her attention to Nadia and the approaching Aurora.

"Hi Nadia! Hi Squirrel Girl!" She winked teasingly at Aurora, before bouncing on her heels as she looked around again at all the scattered supplies. "How excited are you guys for s'mores? Or are you just a burn a marshmallow and chow down on it sorts?" Because she could see the draw to both. She wanted to be a s'more girl - roast that marshmallow to golden perfection. But who even had the patience for that? Vera was definitely more of a charcoal marshmallow type. "It's amazing how often Professor's seem to think it's a good idea to pump us fool of sugar." Was she complaining? No. Just surprised.

Javier mumbled a soft hello to Charlie as he walked in before turning to Vera and laughing. "Not so fast, Miss Thanatos. I'll reveal the answer before the end of the evening, promise," he assured her with a smile as he heard her asking Charlie what the answer was.

"Hello Miss Otedola, hello Miss Marchand," he greeted the Slytherin and the Ravenclaw, respectively, as they joined the group. He jumped a little, however, as a second later, the owl he had noticed land a few feet away turned into his colleague, Celeste. He still wasn't totally used to the whole animagus thing. He smiled at her regardless, though. "Evening, Celeste," he said before he took his marshmallow from the fire, sticking it between the two graham cracker and chocolate towers in his hand and squishing it between them. He smiled and waved in greeting to Nadia as she entered as well, quite pleased that so many students were electing to come hang out with him!

"Good evening Miss Ackerly, Mister Ellis," he called out to the next two students to arrive.

"For those of you wondering what the answer to the activity is...you'll find out before the end of the night, I promise," he announced before taking a bite of his s'more. He wasn't sure what odd muggle had come up with this recipe, but it was delicious.

Keighley wasn't going to say no to an outdoor activity that included a bonfire and s'mores. Especially not on such a beautiful night. So it was with a small spring in her step and flowers in her blonde her hair that she made her way towards everyone else.

Before she could make it to the group, she paused for a few moments to take in the potion bottles on the table. According to the instructions on the card they were supposed to write down the common ingredient found in each potion. Well.. potions wasn't her strongest subject but it also wasn't her worst either. Looking at each potion bottle again, she ran over the list of ingredients from each one that she remembered. It may have taken her a little longer than necessary but in the end she was pretty sure she knew what it was. Fluxweed. And well, if she was wrong. It wasn't a big deal.

I think each potion contains Fluxweed. She scribbled neatly onto a parchment that she folded in half and dropped into the box. Step one complete.

Step two. "Hello, Professor Hernandez, I like the little set up you have going on here." It was simple but comfortable. Oooh, and look! Professor Gert was here too. "Hello, Professor."

Finally step before s'mores time, locate someone to talk to so she wasn't all alone. This took even less time than anything else because immediately her eyes found Charlie and she was already heading towards him. "Heeeeyyyy." The greeting wasn't given only towards him but to those he was standing with.

Hope Archard always liked to take advantage of any activity outdoors. Back home in her rural village, she was used to getting a lot more outdoor activity than at Hogwarts and she sometimes found the castle a bit confining. Being a Ravenclaw (though she still wasn't quite sure she really belonged there), she just had to examine the potions and then take a guess, writing her answer on a slip of parchment and putting it in the box:

There, that was done--hopefully he didn't expect too much from a second year. Now she was free to visit and eat some s'mores, which she hadn't had before, but she saw it involved chocolate, so she was sold on it already.

Later, munching on her treat, which a classmate had kindly shown her how to make, she stood at the edge of the group looking up into a nearby tree, where she thought she'd seen an owl.

She bit back the chuckle at seeing Javier’s reaction to her appearance. It was amusing to see the reactions…as long as they weren’t too frightened. Celeste nodded in acknowledgement of Mr. Bergstrand’s greeting. “You’ll just have to wait and see…” she mused, having heard the seventh year’s own musings on the potions activity. Apparently the boy hadn’t been the only one wondering things as the potions master spoke up to all those that were gathered about it.

“I wonder if I know…” she mused with an innocent smirk. Which was a tease of course given she was well aware. Not that she was going to spill the beans, even if she had an favorites in the crowd. “Hello Ms. Anders"she greeted the sixth year.

Squirrel Girl? Oh that was the other second year. “Hey,” she greeted Aurora with a smile. As for the s’mores…”Very excited,” Nadia remarked before shrugging with one arm. “Why not a bit of both?” She mused as she acquired a stick and a couple of marshmallows, sticking the latter securely on the former to stick over the fire to get them nice and warm and burnt. Kind of a habit Nadia had gotten into…burning the marshmallow like it was torched in dragon fire before it was truly ready for smores. “The crispier the outside, the gooer the inside.”

Nadia chuckled at the comment on sugar. “Maybe they consider it a worthwhile bribe to things.” After all it could be the only thing that brought certain students to activities outside the normal classroom lessons. “I’m certainly not going to deter it.”
