Default Transfiguration Lesson: TBA

It’s an ordinary November afternoon at Hogwarts, but there’s nothing ordinary about the setup for today’s transfiguration lesson. The usual student desks are gone, replaced by several wooden workbenches, like one might find in a tool shed or garage. The lack of desks may be the most obvious change, but it’s not the only one. There’s a mysterious large object at the back of the room, covered by a cloth. How does it relate to the lesson? Only time will tell.

Even Professor Carton’s desk looks different today. While it remains in its usual spot in the front left corner of the room, the normally tidy workspace is littered with boxes of varying sizes. THe boxes are full of buttons, pipe cleaners, and assorted sizes of cardboard. Supplies for an art project, perhaps?

The professor himself stands at the front of the room, waiting to welcome the students. “Hello, welcome in!,” he greets each arrival. “As you come in, collect the materials you’ll need today from the boxes on my desk. There’s a list on the board.”

Rajesh listened as his classmates gave all sorts of ideas on how to help create shelters in times of trouble, the seventh year opting to stay quiet for the time being. Vines…planks…red sparks to try and get help. The useful ones he made sure to have in his notes, especially of he didn’t know of them previously, finally landing on Jude’s suggestion, which seemed to be the one they were starting with in the lesson. Temran Madera. Transfiguring something into a wood plank, in this case the cardboard into a sturdier building material.

The wand movement was easy enough, the Ravenclaw taking his wand out to practice a few times without casting. The incantation just a touch harder, something to get his tongue around. “Temran Madera… Tem-ran Ma-der-a… Temran Madera.” No, that wasn’t quite right, Raj looking at the spelling again trying to work it out. “Temran Madera,” he tried once more, this time a closer resemblance to how the professor had said it.

Now to pull it all together and try on his cardboard in front of him. He pull one of the pieces off the pile and set the rest aside so he could focus on one at a time. Visualizing what he wanted the cardboard and his magic to do, Rajesh gave it a go. “Temran Madera!” he cast, his wand moving horizontally along the cardboard piece. There was a subtle difference when he looked it over, pale markings looking like wood grains. “Temran Madera!” he cast again, repeating both movement and incantation and this time the cardboard was definitely transfigured.

Her dorm mate got a smile at the imaginative answer and a small thumbs, before she scribbled a note about the spell into her book. A good one to remember, because she had completely forgot - a long with a few other answers thrown about the room. Some also got smiles from her, particularly regarding just flying off or sending sparks. The more passive or evasive approach sounded nice to her too.

But anyways, it was time to move on.

Interesting. Wooden planks was what they'd be transfiguring today. She was quite sure she'd be able to figure that eventually. But how to turn those planks into a shelter later was where she failed to see the bigger picture. She certainly hoped the other spells would be elaborating on that as well.

Pulling her first piece of cardboard towards herself, Mouse cleared her throat softly and jumped straight into it. Horizontal lines she was fairly confident in, so already halfway there which gave her the confidence. Making the movement with her wand, Mouse envisioned what she wanted the wood plank to look like - trying to picture a nice redwood, to still fit with her later theme. "Temran Madera". But... Nothing. She went ahead and tried it again, with no result once more. A few more attempts, and apparently 5th was the charm for her today as the piece of cardboard finally went from full cardboard to... Somewhere in between. Another 2 attempts and she finally had a piece of wood, albeit not the way she was wanted it to look.

No matter, at least she'd accomplished step 1.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon took very very very very detailed and organized notes about what they were doing. Jude guessed one of the lesson spells, which impressed Brandon. Jude was so smart. And nice. Brandon thought he was a great role model. "I will." He wouldn't really nudge him, but he would keep the offer of help in mind. And maybe watch the older Hufflepuff to mimic his spellwork(because seventh years were good at those things).

Brandon set his pipe cleaners and buttons aside in very neat groups, bringing the cardboard pieces in front of him. "Tem-ran ma-de-ra," he whispered, reviewing his notes on the spell. "horizontal line." When he thought he was ready, he tried the spell. "Temran Madera? Temran Madera!" It definitely didn't work. Frowning, Brandon tried again, pretending that the cardboard was stubborn and he had to order it to transfigure. "Temran Madera." That was more like it. He grinned, getting to work on the rest of the cardboard.

Norman roamed the room, keeping an eye on the students as they set to work. He liked the progress he saw so far! He saw that Anders and Atreyu-Rehman had succeeded in transfiguring their cardboard. Elsewhere, Durand and Fox were moving right along too. Each student got a nod of approval as he passed.

He reversed course, and as he made his way back to the front of the room, a quick glance at his watch told him it was time to move on to the next spell. “Attention, please,” he addressed the students, pausing to allow time for them to find a stopping place. “If you’re not done transfiguring your cardboard, you can go back to that in a minute. We have another spell to get to first. This time, we’ll be turning the pipe cleaners into wooden poles.”

Reaching into the box on his desk, he pulled out a white pipe cleaner and held it up for the class to see. “The wand movement for this one is a simple flick; the incantation is Palus.” He flicked his wand at the pipe cleaner, repeating the incantation. “Palus!” Soon the pipe cleaner in his other hand was gone, replaced by a wooden pole of the same length. “Take another ten minutes to practice on your pipe cleaners, then we’ll move on to our final spell. The information is on the board if you need it.”

With a flick of his wand, more writing appeared on the board.

While he worked on his own cardboard, he snuck in moments to ensure that Brandon was moving along just fine. Jude was impressed to see that the younger Hufflepuff handled it all; impressed and happy. Catching Carton’s nod, Jude gave him a grin. Okay. They were moving along, and this time, with the pipe cleaners.

“Palus!” Not a great incantation as the previous in Jude’s opinion, but easy and not too syllably. “Palus!” The word was repeated a few times so that he could get the hang of it. Then came the flicking, a wand movement all too familiar since it was the movement of other spells. The boy only flicked the wand twice before deciding he was ready to practice on the first pipe cleaner.

“Palus!” Concentrate and Flick! A wooden pole? Not this time around. Jude was not surprised even if he was heartily disappointed. Naturally, he was determined to transfigure at least one pole so the attempts went on and on… and on. It was perhaps on his seventh attempt that FINALLY the pipe cleaner transformed into a pole.

Cue a subtle celebratory fist pump in the air!

The fifth year was most definitely listening closely as Carton spoke about the first spell they would be working on. Temran Madera. A bright smile and a thumbs up was given to Jude for guessing what they would be working on correctly! Had she mentioned yet how smart her big brother was? He always amazed her with his vast level of knowledge. This was why she needed to remember after they left class to ask him if he could teach her more spells and charms this year when they studied/practiced together.

Jotting down all that Carton said about what they would be doing and all the information on the spell, Keigh was ready to start practicing right away. Moving the items on her desk she wouldn't need yet, the pipe cleaners and buttons, she moved the cardboard right in front of herself. It was time to get started!

"Temran Madera," Keigh repeated softly and clearly several times before doing anything else. Getting a feel for the pronunciation was always very important. There wasn't much need to practice the wand movement as that was simple. A horizontal line she could handle without any worries. Taking out her wand and clearing her throat a little she readied herself to give it a go. "Temran Madera!" Once. Twice. Three times and nothing at all. That was okay, these things weren't always easy the first time around. Taking a brief moments pause she tried again with very obvious results! There on her desk was a wooden board where a piece of cardboard had been a second ago. Smiling brightly to herself she went on to continue doing the same with the rest of the cardboard pieces. Sometimes it worked right away, other times it took a few tries. "Temran Madera!"

Barely had she managed to get the last piece of cardboard transfigured then Carton was moving on and giving them the next spell. Perfect timing! After writing down all of the information, she gave her wand a gentle but firm 'flick' for a bit of practice. Then the incantation was practiced for a few moments as well. "Palus.. Palus.." Over and over again until the word followed from her lips.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon set his wood pieces aside and pulled out the pipe cleaners. Were they going to make mini shelter models? It seemed likely to him. The next spell was palus. Nobody had guessed that in the question about making shelters, he thought. But it made things into wood poles. Or... pole-shaped things into wood poles. Was there a spell for metal poles?

Brandon thought this spell was easier, since there was less pronunciation involved. Still, the idea of a pipe cleaner turning into a pole didn't immediately make sense to him. "palus," he tried, flicking his wand. No, no... he fixed the pipe cleaner to be straighter. "palus." No. "palus. palus palus palus. palus." You know what his problem was? The pipe cleaner didn't look quite straight, and it bothered him. He spent a minute fixing it until it was just perfect and he could focus. "Palus." He imagined a much stronger visual, and it worked this time. Next, he turned the other pipe cleaners into poles, which took a while because he had to fix all of them first. "If I bend the pipecleaner, will I make a bent pole?"

Norman made another round about the room, watching the students work. He noticed that the two Anders siblings were off to a great start and gave each an approving nod. Yes, he saw that fist pump, Jude. The gesture got a slight smile from him as he moved on. Fox was making good progress too. Norman started to turn away after giving the boy a nod of approval but stopped as he heard the question.

“No, not unless you visualize a bent pole when you cast,” he replied. “The result of a transformation spell is determined more by the caster’s visualization than the shape of the original object.” He just chose an object with a similar shape to make the visualization process a bit easier for the students.

Norman completed his rounds and returned to the front just as the ten minute mark passed. “Right, eyes front for a minute, please,” he said, giving the students time to refocus their attention on him. “We have one more spell to practice. This time we’ll be working with the buttons and turning them into nails.”

He reached into one of the boxes and pulled out a button, a big gold one that would be visible from the back of the room. “The incantation for this spell is Taque, pronounced Ta-KAY,” he continued. “The wand movement is the same as Palus, just a simple flick.” Flicking his wand at the button, he said the incantation, “Taque!” The gold button in his hand was gone in an instant, transformed into a long metal nail.

“You’ll have about fifteen more minute to practice Taque and continue working on the other two spells. The spell information is on the board. Let me know if you need help.”

Jude grinned at Keigh in acknowledgement of her thumbs up. She may have mentioned once or twice about his brilliance. He didn’t have a huge ego but when with Keigh, it was different when she complimented him. Why this was so, he hadn’t yet put his hand on the reason. Of course he’d be thrilled to teach the baby sister more spells! He’d be doing all he could to help her with OWLs, just he had helped Rea with NEWTS. The seventh year smiled again at Carton; the man’s encouragement was highly appreciated. The answer to Brandon’s question was noted. How much easier was it that a bent piece of material didn’t matter for a perfect pole? He supposed it would be the same with the next spell: a bit broken from a button would not necessarily produce an out of shape nail.

“Ta-KAY.” Jude did the pronunciation exactly as Carton had. “Taque.” A short incantation with an easy and well practiced wand movement. With a button at the ready, he began. “Taque!’’ Flick! Needless to say this was his memorandum operandi {method of operation} when it came to Transfiguration - the method of taking practically forever to get his spells right.

“Taque!” Flick! On and on this went until there was suddenly a silver, pointy nail staring up at him.

Success!

Mouse only realized she'd fallen a bit behind on learning spell two when she heard Professor Carton calling for attention for the third one. She'd clearly spent too much time on her cardboard - turned - wooden - planks. One had come out a decent shade of a red wood as she'd been trying to visualize, but it was clear that her attempts of adding design for added interest was not a good idea when it came to the timing of things. So after listening to instructions for Taque, it was time to just jump straight into the most straightforward approaches.

Grabbing her pipe cleaners, Mouse focused on this next - testing the word in her head as she separated one from the others and laid it out in front of her. "Palus" She said as a test, feeling satisfied with how the word sounded the same as Professor's before she added her wand movement. A simple flick, was the instruction, which was what she did with the combined word. "Palus!" This one had been much easier, as try one and a pole sat in the place of a pipe cleaner. Mouse smiled a bit, before taking a few more of the cleaners and doing the same to those as practice.

Satisfied with her work there, she jumped into the last one. The word's pronounciation seemed a little more difficult, so she set aside a minute longer just to practice and pay attention to how her mouth formed the words. "Ta-Kay, Ta-kay, Ta-kay... Taque". Once she was feeling a little more confident, wand made it's way back into her hand and she pointed it at the first button, another flick. "Taque!" Hmmm... not as successful this time. A small crease in her brow, and she tried again. "Taque!" Still nothing. Practicing the flick a few more times and clearing her mind of anything other than a simple nail, she tried for a third attempt. "Taque!"

And there was the money. Another smile as a nail sat in it's place. Sighing in relief that she was semi caught up, the Ravenclaw moved on to the other buttons - giving herself more practice.

Hmm. Go figure. Nora had actually gotten close to what the professor was asking for on the first try! That had been good for her confidence! Merlin only knew she needed that her first year at magical year! She took her wand out of her holster and squeezed her hand around it a few times. She was still getting used to it, but things were getting better by the day. Feeling like she was just as ready as she'd ever be, she spread out the first piece of cardboard then pointed her wand toward it. She made the whole horizontal wand motion then said, "Temran Madera!"

She blinked her eyes as there was a sort of pop around the cardboard, and then when she focused on it again, it was somewhat harder and resembled more of a board. It still wasn't what she thought it needed to be, but she could always keep working at it. While the professor roamed around the room, the first year took another shot at the spell. "Temran Madera!" she said again, moving her wand in another horizontal motion. To her surprise, the cardboard hardened even further, and upon knocking on it to test its strength, she figured she had succeeded.

She still had more work to do, but the professor was moving on. She grabbed her pipe cleaners and laid them out in front of her. The incantation seemed simple enough. The wand movement wasn't too bad either. "Palus!" she exclaimed, flicking her wand. Maybe it was the fact that she'd finally lucked out and managed to get the first spell to work, but to her shock, she got this one right on the very first try!

They had moved onto the second spell of the day…Palus. Rajesh watched and listened as Professor Carton introduced it, demonstrating the spell on one of the pipe cleaners left behind on his desk. First they had planks and now they had poles. This time at least both incantation and wand movement appeared fairly simple and straightforward. “Palas…palas….palas….palas,” he practiced, working out the pronunciation until he was comfortable with it before picking up his wand once more in one hand and a pipe cleaner in his other and actually casting.

“Palas!” he spoke, his wand moving with a flick. Like the first spell, it had taken a few times with his visualizing what he had wanted to happen with his magic, but the Ravenclaw soon had a pole instead of a pipe cleaner. For good measure he thought to work second pipe cleaner so he had two to work with should they been needed but alas they were moving on to the third and final spell of the lesson and Raj set it aside.

Taque…turning objects into nails to connect everything all together. In this case the last item they had collected at the start of class…the buttons. He was certainly glad Professor Carton had put up the pronunciation for this one as it was a tad tricky. Ta-kay. With a flick of the wand just as before. “Taque…TaKay…Taque….TaKay…Taque…TaKay.” Over and over he worked his tongue around the word as he tried to get a feel for the incantation. Until he felt comfortable and took up his wand once more to practice it all together.

“Taque!” he cast, flicking at the button. No dice, the button remaining a button. “Taque!” he cast again, sounding a touch clearer in the incantation. Slight change. “TaKay!” he cast once more and voila! He had a nail. With a few more time he had a handful of them, definitely looking better as he went on.

Default all three spells in one post
Kimothée Chalamet • The UWU Agenda • Once Baby, Now Trouble • All Growed Up

Oooh, actual spell work time! Yukie's favourite of both Transfiguration and Charms class. Transfiguration, in particular, seemed to come easier to her than others, which was very helpful for someone who liked to mess with their hair and physical appearance in general. So for most parts when it involved such spells, the Hufflepuff was pretty confident.

Temran Madera. Palus. Yukie had been quietly practicing the enunciation of the incantations of the first two spells, as well as writing them down on her notebook for exams and homework references, when she looked up to the board for the third and final spell. Seems they had the entire building trinity to create some temporary shelter, indeed. Taque. She added that last one to her notes. The wand movements were easy enough too. A horizontal line and a flick, she'd definitely been using and practicing for the past three terms.

Go time? Go time. Yukie put her quill down and took her wand, then arranged the cardboards, pipe cleaners, and buttons in front of her. She decided to start with the first spell, of course. "Temran Madera..." she whispered to herself, letting the syllables flow off her tongue. Saying it once helps all the time. Then, she focus on the cardboard in front of her. "Temran Madera," she said while drawing a horizontal line over the cardboard. Just like Professor Carton said, her cardboard transformed into a wooden plank. She gave it a little knock just to check that it was indeed made of wood, and it was. Yukie smiled to herself, all pleased, before moving on to do the same with the rest. With all five of her cardboards transfigured into wooden planks, she gave each a knock as well and moved onto her pipe cleaners.

Palus was easier to say and to cast, Yukie thought to herself. Just two syllables, and a flick. "Palus." With a flick, her first pip cleaner turned itself into a wooden pole. See, not so bad! Doing it correctly once always gave her the confidence boost she needed. "Palus! Palus! Palus!" Envisioning wooden poles in her mind, she did the spell and the flick three more times on the other pipe cleaners, all of which became poles themselves. One more spell to go!

Taque was a deceivingone. Yukie would read it as 'tacky' if it weren't for the emphasis on the 'que'. Even then, it was pronounced as 'kay' rather than 'key'. "Taque... Ta-kay... Ta-KAY. Ta-KAY." She repeated the incantation a couple more times to herself before she had the confidence to try the spell on the buttons. Biting her lower lip, she brought one button closer to her first. She had so many of these to go, but she might as well start first before worrying. Yukie had no time to worry! She can do it! "Taque." Though with the correct flick of her wand, nothing happened to the button. Second try, maybe? "Taque!" The Hufflepuff said, with the emphasis on the last syllable, and alas her button finally turned into a nail. Relieved, she allowed herself to smile before she got to working with the other buttons.

Yukie deserved a gold star for this. A gold star for each spell she successfully did, actually!

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

So it was okay to have a bent pipe cleaner, then. Brandon made sure all his pipe cleaners were perfect anyway. He set his new wooden poles(which had harmlessly ended up the same color as the pipecleaners) off to the side by the wood, and focused on the buttons. taque. Buttons into nails. Simple flick. In order to understand the spell better, he took detailed notes on it. He also wrote down his first thought about the spell, which was that his sister(and his pen pal, and several other people he knew) would have hated turning interesting buttons into nails, but he didn't mind it. Also he wrote that since the poles he made with palus had been different colors, he wanted to make all of his nails look the same.

First, he practiced the incantation until he was confident with it. He didn't think he needed practice at flicking his wand, but he practiced anyway. Then he tried the spell without a clear visualization. "taque. taque." The button turned into a tiny silver nail, and the next one was giant and purple. He pushed them aside, writing out those results in his notebook. He liked to take notes, or at least he was in the habit of doing it. For his next try, he thought very hard about the nails he wanted. "taque. taque." Then he made a medium brown button and a big green button into identical nails. "Tada."

Maisey had laid out all of her supplies neatly in a line so she could do each individual item. Transfiguration had not been her strongest suit but she was getting better at it with each lesson she had. She scribbled down the notes from the board. She took the two small pieces of cardboard and moved them directly in front of her. She made the horizontal line wand movement, a few times. She had been known to flourish her wand a bit too much with doing the wand movements. So that’s what she always focused on more. Wand movements.

Horizontal line

Horizontal line

Horizontal line

Bleh. That’s enough wand waving for now. Temran Madera. Checking her notes again. Temran. Madera. ”Te… Temran Madera.” with the horizontal wand movement. ”Temran Madera.” Andddd

Nothing.

”Temran Madera.”

Ugh.

She cleared her throat. ”Temran Madera.” with the wand movement. The first one of the small cardboard pieces changed to a piece of wood. She knocked on it to see if it had really turned into wood.

Knock knock

Oh she did it, nice and solid plank of wood too. Her father would be most impressed. She grinned and quickly moved the other small board to her and transfigured it. Then the larger cardboard board and the other two medium sized cardboard pieces.

Apparently she had just finished up in time to start taking notes on the next spell. Now that was more like it. The wand movement flick, that was her favorite, it was simple and easy to do and remember. She grabbed up the four pipe cleaners, such a symbol of her childhood. Next she sat them out straight side by side in front of her. With a flick of hey wand she said ”Palus!” Ugh her nose scrunched up in frustration… okay okay so she hadn’t gotten that one on first go. She had to remind herself that sometimes she didn’t get it on the first time and that was okay. Focusing on the pipe cleaner, and a flick of her wand. ”Palus!” the pipe cleaner had turned to a pole. She then turned to the remaining pipe cleaners and one by one she used the spell Palus to transfigure them into poles too.

Again she was cutting it close. The lesson was progressing in with the last spell to work on. Again she wrote down the spell information and this time there was a pronunciation note with it. Also there was another flick wand movement to her relief. The only thing was that Maisey had opted for the maximum amount of buttons and here she was with twenty buttons to turn to nails.”Ta-Kay!” She said brightly. Okay… Maisey you can do this. ”Taque!” she flicked her wand.

Tada!

You have nail! Talk about a confidence booster. It was just what she needed to get to power through the nineteen other buttons she had in front her. Soon all her her buttons were now nails. And she was absolutely please with herself during this lesson so far.

Default Question 2
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Norman liked what he saw on his final sweep of the room, quiet students hard at work on the task at hand. Anders and Fox were moving right along, and it looked as if Durand, Atreyu-Rehman, and Rasting weren’t far behind. Elsewhere, he saw Collins and Wilde making excellent progress. All of the students got an approving nod as he made his rounds.

With a final check of his watch, he circled around to the front of the room once more. “Great work, everyone!” He addressed the group with a slight smile. “As you might have guessed, we’ll be building something with the materials you’ve just transfigured. Before we get to that, here’s some food for thought. Which method of building do you think would be more efficient, the magical way or the n-muggle one?” He narrowly avoided saying No Maj at the last moment. Old habits die hard, he supposed. “What are some pros and cons to each?”

OOC: Thanks for sticking with us! Question 2 is up. You’ll have ABOUT 24 HOURS for this one. As always, catch-up posts are allowed.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

While he had been waiting for Carton to move the lesson forward, Jude had gone ahead and done some more practice. He was sorry to say that despite this, his attempts had not yielded as many materials as he would have liked since he was still awfully slow with getting things transfigured. But some progress was better than none, yes?

The next question had him putting his thinking cap on once more until he raised his hand. “The magical way to building is rather quicker given that no manual labour would be required. But what happens if the magic wears off after some time? In that case, the mundane way may be a better choice.”

She was excellent at building if it was with thread, needles and some scissors. But the whole hammer and nails had her a little nervous, especially with the question. Would they be doing this the muggle way now that they'd used the magic to create the materials?

Raising her hand, Mouse waited her turn to be called on throwing in her two knuts. "Some pros of magic would be that if you do not have the materials, there are potential options like what we did here to create them from what you do have available - where as with the muggle way you have to use what resources are available." Which... She supposed was still true of the magic way. "And on the flip side of that, I think doing things the muggle way with your own two hands gives a whole different set of accomplishment." though... That was just her personal opinion.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Brandon set his materials back into their little pushed-away piles, not touching them again until he knew what to do with them. For now, the notebook came out again, and he took notes on the pros and cons of building with and without magic. "Magic building is probably better in most cases, especially if you don't have shelter-building skills... but it's not reliable, in my mind. I don't know every spell, and anyway I could lose my wand. I'd like to know how to make one properly without magic, just in case." He had a fear of things that weren't reliable. People, objects, knowledge. He wanted to always be prepared for everything at all times. Unreliability was unacceptable! Things should almost always work the exact same way. Otherwise they couldn't be trusted.

Yukie had been working on her buttons and Taque-ing through them, when Professor Carton called for their attention once again. She put her transfiguring streak on hold to look up at the professor. Yes, she had indeed guessed from the beginning that they would be building something. Given their current materials, maybe a little house or wooden canopy thing if the hypothetical opening scenario was any clue.

To decide whether the magical or muggle way of building was easier came as a no brainer to the Hufflepuff. Yukie would prefer the magical way, if the situation permits it. There were certainly advantages and disadvantages to both, and she nodded in agreement as the other students shared their thoughts. She raised a hand. "I would prefer using magic, professor, but considering that most of us are underage, we could be traced and get into trouble if we attempted these spells in the real wilderness." Though, to be fair, Yukie wouldn't be as bothered if she did so. She just wanted to survive in that kind of situation, okay? "So I think it would still be nice to learn how to build things the muggle way." She also didn't really have the skills for actual building. Was it time to learn that too?

Had Maisey looked up she would have beamed at the professor for giving her an approving nod that he was giving all of them. She would have beamed back. But she had been way too busy and focused on the task at hand. She had finally gotten through all of that. She wondered what exactly they were going to build with all of this.

Maisey wondered what the magical was, she only really knew the muggle way to build with wood and nails using a hammer. Her father was a Architect so she had seen the muggle way of building houses a bunch of times. "Well Professor seeing that I'm pretty familiar way the muggle way, my dad builds houses and buildings, I've never seen the magic way before." She said with a nod. "I believe the magical way would probably be the quickest. I know one thing about the muggle way is especially with wood as material eventually it breaks down gets old and will need to be replaced, more so if it's not treated or taking care of. She nodded, that was pretty much it, for now anyway.

Hope wasn't familiar with any of these spells, but had managed to get the hang of them after a little practice. Though that last one was a bit tricky--she had a hard time getting the hang of the pronunciation of Taque. But finally she sat with a small pile of wooden boards, poles, and nails in front of her. Which was nice, but putting them together was the tricky part, after all. But her train of thought was interrupted by the professor's next question.

Which was better? Well, so far they'd only created materials, not built anything with magic, so it was hard to tell if that would be better than Muggle methods. Hope had not helped much with building things at home, but she seemed to remember that her father and his friends used both magic and Muggle-type handiwork when they were building things.

"I'm not really sure about Muggle methods," she ventured at last, "but it does seem like it might be handy to be able to create the materials you need to build with. Because you might not be able to find or buy the things you need all the time."

Apollo should really try to focus more. It wasn't anything personal against Professor Carton and yet when he started off the lesson with Imagine you’re stranded in the wilderness somewhere, and you need to build a shelter. How might you use magic to help you?, the seventeen year old's mind immediately went to being stranded in the wilderness with the girlfriend. And was it a cold day? Because if it was, then probably using magic to keep them both from freezing to death. Assuming it was too cold where cuddling proved fruitless. While a tent was good, it wasn't insulated, which is where the heat producing charms would be handy.

So they were actually going to be building something then? Well that was kind of cool. And maybe potentially useful knowledge to show off. Even if he wasn't stranded but purposefully went on a date into the wilderness.

"Temran Madera" he rehearsed. Seemed easy enough. "Temran Madera" he practiced this time on the cardboard, watching as it morphed into a harder substance (aka a wooden plank).

The next incantation also seemed simple enough. "Palus" Apollo practiced aloud a couple times, before on the pipe cleaners, successfully transforming those into poles. Which made him wonder - what were the chances of them having pipe cleaners or cardboard in the wilderness with him? Could he use these spells on any object he could find? Apollo made a note on his parchment to ask the professor later.

Moving onto the final spell, "Ta-kay. Taque" Good thing he said that because in his head he would have said that as 'tack', not thinking it be two syllables.

Okay, so they were building something. Perhaps their own tent? Judging from the poles they made. Before that was to be revealed they had another question about which building method would be more efficient - muggle or magical. Everyone seemed to say magical, in which Apollo was inclined to agree except he also wanted to play devil's advocate because why not?

"Efficiency is a fun term. If you mean quicker, then yes, magical... but if by efficiency you're referring to the quality, then the muggle would be the more reliable method. Magic is finicky and much like muggles have skilled builders and contractors, magic also requires skills."

Norman was curious to see where the students would take this question. There were so many directions it could go! Right away, he was pleased with what he heard. “Valid points,” he replied, giving Anders an approving nod. “While it may take many years - sometimes even centuries, all magic weakens eventually. In which case, one would have to either re-enforce the spells or rebuild completely.”

Durand’s answer got a slight smile. Oh yes, Norman knew that sense of accomplishment well. Prior to becoming a professor, he’d been a vanishing cabinet maker, a job in which he’d used a combination of magical and muggle building techniques. But his work history wasn’t pertinent now. “True on both counts,” he said, nodding.

For the record, Norman didn’t have a preference for magical methods or muggle ones. Both had their uses. The question was just something to get the students thinking; there were no right or wrong opinions. Valentine’s answer got a slight eyebrow raise. Did she care to elaborate on that? “Okay,” Norman replied. “Any reason why you think so?”

Well, here was a viewpoint Norman hadn’t expected. Most kids would probably not consider magic unreliable, but Fox was on to something with his reasoning. “Good point.” he replied with a nod. “Lack of knowledge or a wand can be an obstacle to doing things the magical way.” Come to think of it, a lack of knowledge was a barrier to most skills, magical or otherwise!

Here was another unexpected answer! “Ah, yes,” Norman replied with a nod, “though the degree to which you might get into trouble would depend on the situation. There’s some leeway where life-threatening situations are involved.” He hoped that non of his students would ever have to experience that firsthand, though!

Wilde’s answer got a slight smile. Seemed like the girl knew her stuff when it came to muggle building! Norman vaguely wondered if her parents had a career in that field, but he didn’t dwell on that thought, as it wasn’t relevant. “Good point,” he said. “Magically created materials don’t wear down in the same way muggle ones do. You can also use magic to reinforce existing materials and stop the break down process.”

Archer’s answer got an approving nod. “True,” he replied. “You never know what resources you’ll have available, and sometimes you have to work with what you have.”

Adara-Stark’s answer may have gotten a slight smile from the professor. Norman wasn’t sure if he’d describe the word efficient as “fun”, but the boy made a convincing argument. “Valid points all around,” he replied.

Norman’s bluish-green eyes swept the room in search of any more hand in the air. Seeing none, he took it as his cue to move on. “Great answers, everyone! As you’ve demonstrated, there are advantages and disadvantages to each building method. Magic is fast and gives you a wider variety of materials to work with, but it requires specialized knowledge and can be tricky. Muggle methods are typically long-lasting, but they take longer and leave you reliant on the materials available at the time. In my experience, I’ve found that a combination of the two methods works best, but you’ll have to make up your own mind which method you prefer. To help you do that, we have a little building activity.”

Here he paused a moment to allow time for the students to absorb the information thus far. As he did so, he flicked his wand at the cloth-covered object at the back of the room. The cloth fell, revealing a large workbench containing tape measures, hammers, nails, spare planks and poles. “Today we’ll be building a simple stool using the materials you transfigured earlier. I pre-cut everything to the required dimensions earlier, so you won’t need to worry about that. If you successfully transfigured your items, you’ll have the correct size,” he continued. “You will need a tape measure and hammer, unless you want to try hammering with magic. As you can see, we also have extra materials should you need them… or want to compare magical materials with their muggle counterparts.” Hopefully no one would actually need extras, but better safe than sorry!

Was that clear so far? Okay, good. Moving on… With a flick of his wand, Norman levitated the boxes off his desk, guiding them gently to the floor below to create a clear workspace to demonstrate. “To assemble your stool, take two of your poles and lay them upside down on your workbench like this.” He picked up two poles that had been previously hidden among the boxes and flipped them over, gently laying them across his desk so that they were parallel with each other. “When you have your poles level, measure eight and a half inches from the end, and make a small mark on each pole so you don’t lose your place. This should be in the middle of the poles” He measured 8.5inches with a tape measure, marking each place with a pencil. “Take one of your small planks, and nail it to the poles at the place you just marked. It shouldn’t take more than two nails on each side.”

He decided to use magic to hammer the nails to spare the students the noise pollution of hammering. “Malleus!” he cast, tapping his wand at a nail carefully held in place with his other hand. The nail hammered itself into place, and he repeated the process until the plank was firmly in place. “When you’ve finished that, set that piece aside, and repeat the process for the other two poles. Measure 8 and a half inches, mark, and hammer the other small plank into place. These pieces will form the legs of your stool.”

Norman repeated the previous steps with two more poles then addressed the students again, “By now, you should have the small plank attached to the front of your poles. Now, you’re going to flip the leg over so that the side with the nails faces down. On the right side of the leg, measure seven inches from the bottom, and mark your spot; it should be an inch and a half below the smaller piece you previously attached. Take one of your medium planks and hammer it into place with one nail at the top and one at the bottom.” More wandwork and silent hammering followed. “When you’ve done that, move to the side facing away from you, and do the same thing. Measure seven inches, mark, and attach a medium plank.”

After another brief pause to allow time for the information to sink in, he went on, “By now you should have one piece with planks attached at the back, left, and right side. The left and right pieces should be facing up like this…” He gestured to the unfinished stool base on his desk. Two wooden planks on either side stuck up. “Now you’re going to take the other leg you made and attach it to this piece. This time, you want the side with the nails facing up.” He picked up the other piece and held it with the nailed wood up. “Measure seven inches from the end and mark the left and right sides.” He measured, marking the places with his pencil. “Line this piece up with the rest of the base - make sure it lines up perfectly!” That part was important. No one wanted a crooked stool! “Now, the open ends of your base should align with the marks you made on the left and right sides of the other leg. When you have that lined up, hammer the other end of the right plank to the remaining leg using 2 nails. Then do the same thing to the left one.” More magical hammering followed.

When Norman was done, he had a single piece. “Now you should have a complete base for your stool,” he said, gesturing toward his work so far. “All that’s left is to attach the seat. For this part, you’re going to flip the base over so that all four legs are touching your workbench.” As he did so, he continued, "Take your last piece - the large plank - and position it over the top. There should be a half inch overhang on each side; use your tape measure to check. When you have it positioned correctly, hammer the seat into place using one nail at each corner and at least one more on each side.”

For this step, Norman switched to a muggle hammer so the students who might not otherwise be familiar could see how to hold one. When he was finished, a simple stool sat atop his desk. “You’ll have the rest of class to work,” he said, flicking his wand at the board. A set of instructions and a stool diagram appeared. “There’s instructions and a diagram on the board, and I’ll be coming around if you need more help. You may begin - but please be careful if you’re using a muggle hammer!” He didn’t want to send anyone to the hospital wing today!

Simple Stool Instructions

1. Take 2 poles and lay parallel to each other on your workbench.
2. Measure 8.5 inches from the bottom. Mark the spot on each pole with a pencil.
3. Take 1 small plank and hammer into place using magical or muggle methods. This should take no more than 2 nails on each side.
4. Set piece aside and repeat steps 1-3 with your remaining 2 poles.
5. Turn piece over so that the nailed side faces down.
6. Measure 7 inches from the bottom on the right side of the leg. Mark place with pencil - should be 1.5 inch below the previously attached small plank.
7. Take 1 medium plank and hammer into place using 2 nails, 1 top & 1 bottom.
8. Repeat steps 6 & 7 for the left side.
9. Hold the other leg so that the nailed side faces up.
10. Measure 7 inches from the bottom. Mark the place.
11. Line up leg so that the measuring marks on the left and right sides align with the open ends of the medium planks on the base.
12. Hammer open ends of planks to the leg at the right and left sides. Now you should have a complete base.
13. Turn base over so all 4 legs rest on your workbench
14. Place large plank over top of base. There should be a ½ inch overhang on each side.
15. Hammer into place using 1 nail at each corner and at least 1 nail on each side
OOC: Sorry, this post took way longer to write than I thought! We’ve reached the mini activity. For this one, your students will build a simple stool using the materials transfigured in the main activity. The pieces were pre-cut to the correct dimensions; all your student needs to do is put them together using the directions provided. You may use magic or a muggle hammer [or some combination of the 2) to do so.. Norman and I will be around if you need help; please indicate in the title of your post. You’ll have AT LEAST 48 HOURS for this one!
