Muggle Studies Lesson: Bounce

Located on the first floor is the classroom for Muggle Studies. It was November, the fun of Halloween long past in place of the next upcoming holiday. Entering in, the classroom looks fairly normal, aside from the many unlabeled boxes on the Professor's desk. Where's Professor Feirgrund at? Why he was right there in front of the desk where the boxes laid stacked waiting on the students to arrive. Take a gander, speculate, and find your seat before the lesson begins.

Where are we at?

Q1 - Greetings + First question.
Q2 - Second question + check out the item
A1 - What is the Pogo stick? Time to balance.
A2 - Pogo Hopping! Heading to the Corridor or Staying to practice?

---
OOC: Welcome! Class has already begun, but you can jump right in posting as if they were here all along. While this is the first RP class, IC-wise there have been many beforehand. Be sure to check the rules & canon info regarding this subject for extra OOC info. :)

There were always boxes involved, weren't there? It was not something Jude minded; the boxes just served to make him super interested in what the Professors had planned for that lesson. These in particular, in the Muggle Studies classroom, were not labelled. This meant that Jude would spend all of his time while waiting for the lesson to get started to wonder what the contents were.

"Hi, Professor!" The Hufflepuff grinned at the man, shot the boxes a questioning look before setting off to grab a seat.

Were there any giveaways around the room about what today's lesson entailed? Sadly, there didn't seem to be.

Whenever Nancy entered a classroom and saw a pile of THINGS behind the professor - even if she didn't know what they were - she always raised an eyebrow. She was usually a fan of the traditional 'sit and take notes' lesson but a fun, hands on lesson was always welcome. However, this was Hogwarts, and you could never know exactly what you were going to get when you walked into the classroom.

What was in those boxes? Hmmm. Clearly something to do with the lesson, but since the professor was being purposely secretive about it, she just smiled at him and took her seat. "Hi Professor Feirgrund!" she greeted him as she took her seat near the back.

November was her favorite month of the year. Halloween was a lot of fun and all, and Vera had very much enjoyed frolicking around the castle dressed up, but NOW it was her and Vasco's birth month. Sure, their birthday was early but the rest of the month she could bask in the fact she was now fourteen. Practically an adult! So it was a very enthusiastic young girl woman that skipped into the room. "Hi Professor!" She chirped, taking a quick glance a the boxes before finding her way towards an open seat.

She hoped they were going to do something FUN today. Like uh... maybe play a muggle board game! Or like... jump rope or something! Weren't their muggle specific jump rope rhymes?

Muggle Studies was a class that was always good for surprises and with the pile of mystery boxes on the desk, today might just be another one. They didn’t outwardly offer any clues like the ones in Transfiguration. Rajesh opted not to move closer and investigate, however, not to spoil it. They would find out soon enough. “Hello Professor,” the seventh year greeted the man with a polite smile as he made his way further into the classroom and moved towards a free seat near Mouse. “Hey,” he added in greeting to his fellow Ravenclaw.

Hope hurried into class, hoping she wasn't late. As a first year, she was still a little unused to the changing staircases at Hogwarts. Actually, she wasn't that used to stairs at all--none of the houses in her home village in Virginia had had more than one story. But it looked like things hadn't started yet. "Hello, Professor!" she panted cheerily as she tried to catch a peek at what was behind him. She really knew nothing at all about Muggles, either in American or in England, so she was finding this class very interesting. "Hello," she said a little shyly to the other students who were already there.

Anna Banana 01-22-2023 04:55 AM

Nora literally couldn't believe there was a whole Hogwarts class dedicated to teaching about the muggle way of life! Here it was, though---Muggle Studies, her time to shine! It also gave her a calmness that she didn't realize she needed until she'd attended the very first class back when school had just started. She couldn't possibly tell her muggle friends all about Hogwarts, but if she could, they'd get a good laugh over Nora taking a class on how to be a muggle.

She stepped into the classroom and took a casual look around. "Hello, Professor," she said, as she made her way to an empty seat. She gave all the boxes a slight eyebrow raise but otherwise said nothing else as she settled in. Oh, look, Nancy was sitting next to her. She gave her friend a little smile and a wave.

All these professors love to dangle all the suspicious boxes in front of them, don't they? Not that Yukie was complaining! She liked the mystery that came with it, and someone with a curious mind like herself would be capable of thinking of the what-ifs.

"Hey, professor," Yukie greeted the man with a smile and because she was her extra curious self today, she felt the need to ask. "What are in the boxes?" Because maaaybe Professor Feirgrund would tell them, or at least offer a hint to keep their curious minds rolling. Yukie then went to occupy a seat for herself.

Jonah was in a weird mood (as per usual), so when he entered the classroom, pulling the hood of his robe over his head, he merely grunted in greeting as he made his way to a far desk in the back.

Were there mysterious boxes?

He hadn't noticed.

Or maybe he had noticed and simply didn't care enough to wonder.

The world may never know.

astrocat 01-22-2023 04:11 PM

"Hello, Professor." Brandon stepped right up to the desk and looked at the boxes more closely. He didn't touch them, but he squinted at them and took in their every detail. He still couldn't tell what this had to do with muggles- his father never had a bunch of boxes in the home, nor did his stepmother. His sister did, but she wasn't a muggle and anyway it wasn't about blood status. He guessed that there was something in the boxes.

Mysterious. Lessons were usually that way. Brandon always tried to figure out the subject as fast as possible, but it would take until at least the first question to do that. Nodding politely at the professor, he dropped into an open seat. Now it was time to wait.

Atlas was starting to feel like he spent more time in this part of the castle than anywhere else at Hogwarts. Were he not so certain with his calling post-Hogwarts, he might feel bad about monopolizing so much of Professor Feirgrund's time. Actually, who was he kidding, he wouldn't feel bad about that even if he still felt adrift with his intentions. He was a little too optimistic to say that the seventh year was getting personal with the man, but there were the occasional slips into more sentimental avenues than purely aspiring inventor and possible entrepreneur topics. Especially when Atlas asked the not-so-occasional healer related question which, remarkably, also remained tucked away inside his noggin...if not with a couple of screws loose so said information rattled around a bit more than his other focuses.

Some of the healer advice had been put to good use today seeing as Freddie was stuck in bed with some cold or another that he had BETTER keep to himself. Sparing Freddie an additional blanket from his own bed to keep his friend all incubated and comfy, Atlas was ready to tackle today's lesson with double the notetaking if necessary. Not just to pass along to Freddie since he was missing class but, well, they were partners in a project and if they weren't consistently on the same page then the success of said project would be in jeopardy. So...not entirely a selfless act, but things rarely were.

Again, being quite over the mystery item reveal aesthetic of Hogwarts professors, Atlas only subtly rolled his eyes at them before his gaze settled on Professor Feirgrund and he actually smiled in greeting. "Good day, professor."

Again.

Anyway.

Moving to find a seat, the Gryffindor settled into one beside his latest co-portrait antagonizer (what had his name been again? It had started with a B if he recalled correctly). "Hey kid," he greeted coolly before getting his things out and arranging them in front of them just so.

MadMadamMalfoy 01-22-2023 06:57 PM

Desiree was looking forward to today's Muggle Studies lesson. Did that make her a nerd? Having grown up exposed to the muggle world, it was one of her better subjects, and it was a mostly low-key class where she didn't have to worry about getting messy. What was there not to like? She smiled, greeting Professor Feirgrund with a cheery wave as she entered the room. "Hi, Professor!"

Her bright blue eyes were immediately drawn to the boxes. Wow, there were a lot of them! She wondered what they were for. Maybe they were full of supplies they'd need for an art project. Or maybe some muggle gadgets they were going to use. Maybe there was nothing inside at all and they were going to use the boxes themselves for something, like making a box fort. Maybe it was a lesson about muggle shipping methods, which involved boxes. That seemed kind of boring to her, but you never know!

Curiosity piqued, she took a seat near the front, where she could get a good look at the boxes, and took out her pen and notebook.

Enough time had passed for lesson to begin that Feirgrund clapped his hands for everyone's attention, "Places everyone. Welcome back to Muggle Studies. Today we'll be working with another muggle toy inside these boxes." Potentially fun stuff enough, "Before that, quick question time before you can collect and open one of these boxes... What are some of your favorite toys, gadgets, and items you experienced in your childhood? Or perhaps a cherished gift from your loved ones?" There were no wrong answers or reactions here.. within reason.

OOC: Thank you for your patience, everyone! You can react/answer to either questions depending on character's background. ^_^ Class has started now so any new posters can post acting as if they were here all along without IC consequences for late arrival. Next post will be around 24 hours from now.

FearlessLeader19 01-22-2023 11:44 PM

Oh.

They were continuing the trend of Muggle toys then? Jude had rather enjoyed previous lessons on this topic so he definitely was keen on finding out which particular toy they would be working with today. The first question was a rather easy one for him, the answer popping quite quickly into his head.

The seventh year’s hand went up. “Mine were toy instruments. Particularly drums and xylophones.” Sure, he hadn’t gotten into the piano until he started Hogwarts but it was due to his older brother’s influence that Jude had had an affinity for drums. Xylophones? Yeah, well he figured he just liked to hit things. "As for gadgets, that would be cellular phones." His mom's and dad's, that is, until he got his own when they deemed him old enough.

Chelliephone 01-22-2023 11:46 PM

Oooh favorite toys or games?? At the question, Vera's hand shot into the air and she waited for her turn to answer. "Gobstones!' obviously something she still played, though she doubted it was ever something she'd try to go pro on, even if that was an option.

And uh if he meant something mundane... She was pretty sure there was something called Jenga?

Lissy Longbottom 01-23-2023 12:43 AM

...TOYS?

Nancy blinked a few times as the professor announced the topic of the lesson. What did they look like, babies? How was this information at all useful to the study of muggles? She just continued to sit there, pondering why Professor Feirgrund thought this was pertinant information as her classmates began to answer his question.

What toys had she played with growing up? Hmm.

Well, that was an easy one for her. She raised her hand, waiting for her turn to be called. "A toy broomstick, Professor. Well, specifically, my brother Moe's toy broomstick. I would take it all the time and he would get so mad at me, but it was so fun and my parents never got me one of my own. Just dolls and stuff," she explained. True, she'd never actually summoned up the courage to ASK for one of her own. Even Santa hadn't known, because she'd been too worried that word would get back to her parents about her taking Moe's things. Despite yelling at her and having a fit, he'd remarkably remained pretty quiet about the whole debacle with her parents.

Perhaps that was why he was asking them and teaching them about toys. Because of nostalgia and the memories connected to them or...something. What was the muggle equivalent of a toy broom, she wondered. A toy car maybe?

astrocat 01-23-2023 01:05 AM

Brandon wasn't a master of anything. But he wasn't a Mr. of anything either, so he supposed Master Fox and Mister Fox were the same. He also wasn't a kid. Well, he was, but that wasn't his name. It was okay... he didn't mind. "Hello, Atlas," he replied, making space for the older boy to sit.

Brandon had many muggle toys. He wasn't particularly attached to most of them, though. They all just got used against him anyways. "I like my phone too," He said in response to Jude's answer. "But I really like chess. And I'm attached to the stuffed animals my mother and sister gave me." That was most of what he was attached to. Except for the my little ponies, and his book collection, and his flower pressing kit, and... he was lying when he claimed to be unattached. He loved his toys! He just didn't want to admit it.

Deezerz 01-23-2023 02:14 AM

Muggle toys were a gamble. They were either fun, useful or just plain boring and useless. Serena's stoic, steel-blue eyes examined the boxes from her seat, wondering what they housed.

The professor's question pulled her thoughts away from the boxes and instead sent her mind to the past. What were her favorite gadgets when she was a child? There were many. At the top of the list was her potions kit, her mini beaters bat and broom, and a small catapult her uncle Cornelius had gifted her when she was four years old. So many experiments and chaos, it had been amazing.

Serena raised her hand. "My favorite was a catapult my uncle gifted me." Her cousin would have been her first experiment. Unfortunately her mother denied her that.

Kimothy 01-23-2023 03:04 PM

A muggle toy invention, did the professor say? Yukie was still curious, but since the professor didn't divulge the specifics, she was going to trust the process that the man would eventually tell them what he was hiding in those boxes.

Following the professor's question, there was immediately a list of favourites in Yukie's mind. She still had her stuffed bunny, which she'd left at home since she's somehow outgrown the stuffed animals of her youth. There was also that magical baking kitchen set, where she'd make her fake cookies as a kid but she obviously has moved on to bigger, older kid things and was actually baking real cookies now. So many! She had a wonderful childhood, looking back, it made a little smile creep on her lips. Yukie figured she would try to offer something a bit more timeless for the discussion. "Cameras, professor, for keeping memories," the Hufflepuff said, after she raised her hand.

Yukie Selina Rasting was definitely that kid who loved grinning at the camera wherever, whenever. A whole darling for the camera.

Kolyander 01-23-2023 03:40 PM

Been here all along! xD

Keighley liked Muggle Studies. Most of what they learned were things that she already knew or was at least familiar with. She felt that helped her a lot with the class but there was also a fair bit that she was still learning which kept the lessons from getting boring.

Sitting up a little straighter, Keigh was very ready for the question that was asked. When it came to the things she loved playing with as a little child, the list was long. Between her two older siblings (well three but Koen was much older than she was so he hadn't had many toys left when she came around) and herself there had always been toys around.. and someone to play with. "Like Jude I had a fondness for musical toys only I preferred this small guitar that I carried around a lot. I also really loved stuffed toys and those fluffy shaped pillows but those aren't exactly toys," she laughed softly, her hand in the hair as she had started speaking.

Such wonderful memories this question was bringing back.

MadMadamMalfoy 01-23-2023 09:47 PM

Desiree was already in a good mood, but she perked up at the mention of toys. Ooh, that’s what was in the boxes? Best lesson ever! Okay, maybe not. The best lesson ever would be something about Disney movies - could they do that sometime, please? She knew a lot about Disney so she could help - but this was a very close second!

Usually Desiree had to really think before speaking up in class, but this time she knew right off the bat what her answer was. There was one type of toy she gravitated toward over any other: dolls. She couldn’t remember a time in her life when she didn’t have at least one of them, and some of her happiest childhood memories involved caring for the little plastic people. She did a good job of it too! All of her dolls had lavish houses, vast wardrobes, and all the accessories they could ever need. As she reminisced, her thoughts turned to Edward, the dummy from Potions class. She wondered what happened to him!

With her answer in mind, she listened intently to her classmates. It was interesting to learn about the toys they enjoyed! After a few people had given their answers, she eagerly raised her hand to give her own. “I’ve always liked dolls,” she said when being called on. “My favorite is one that my grandmother made for me when I was little. It was inspired by a character in a Disney movie.” Anyone who interacted with her for longer than five minutes would’ve seen it at some point, since she carried it everywhere with her!

She didn’t elaborate on the reason for the doll’s creation or the fact that it looked like her dad, not because she was ashamed but because it was a sad story. Okay, she was ashamed, just not for the reasons one might think. She wasn’t ashamed of having dolls at her age; she was ashamed that there was ever a time in her life that she needed a doll to teach her not to be afraid of her dad’s changed appearance!

sweetpinkpixie 01-23-2023 10:31 PM

Calling an under classman made him feel mature. No, it absolutely was not contradictory to how he had hated being called that as a first year and no he would not be taking any questions at this time. He would argue that 'hey kid' was at least a notch above 'hey you'...possibly.

Anyway.

Whatever.

The younger Hufflepuff was receiving another smile regardless...and not came the obligation to remember his name since the kid had remembered his own. Calling him 'Fox' could be a back up - he used to be called just by his last name by others. It was all good.

Settling in to his seat and once again offering the professor an eager smile (he was trying to reign it in and not grin, Atlas found himself less interested in sharing an earnest response. His favorites were sort of his favorites for a reason and anything that held real sentimental value (his shared cloak of invisibility with Remy, all his metal companions, Toby, his Pluto plushie, and his metallic matchsticks immediately came to mind) were those he wished to keep close to his chest and not expose for others. So, vague it was and something that anyone who did any research on him (ironically unironically in the muggle world as well) would be able to find this information since he had won numerous robotic titles. "LEGOs and especially some of the LEGO robotics kits I got for Christmas and my birthday pre Hogwarts era. One of my favorites was this vintage one from 2017 called BOOST Creative Toolbox. Practically disappeared in my room for a month after getting that one."

It was also the kit that set the foundation for his first robotics win so...it was truly out of this world.

Holmesian Feline 01-23-2023 11:28 PM

Muggle Toys…

Now that could be interesting. Raj tried to think on what toy he would consider a favorite growing up. There was the stuffed dragon and hippogriff he had gotten when he first came home. Though Ash’s brother had mentioned it and perhaps not something a seventh year would offer as an repeat answer. Gobstones, mentioned by a young Gryffindor gained a smile in her direction given he enjoyed playing that particular game with his dad.

Oh right…the snitch.

“I had a modified snitch,” he finally answered. One that he could chase but didn’t fly too crazily or high like a real game snitch would. “Plenty of room to run around with it.” As long as he stayed away from the main areas of the preserve where he could accidentally wander too close to the creatures.

"Very classical, those help with motor function and dexterity,"

Oooh favorite toys or games?? At the question, Vera's hand shot into the air and she waited for her turn to answer. "Gobstones!' obviously something she still played, though she doubted it was ever something she'd try to go pro on, even if that was an option.

And uh if he meant something mundane... She was pretty sure there was something called Jenga?

Feirgrund nodded approvingly. A toy for all ages.

"That definitely isn't an easy thing to share," He had his own memories on the toy broomstick and his kids were expressing the same rilvary over toys.

"Splendid," No it wasn't sarcastic, he was suddenly channeling older memories with his kids on it.

"I'm glad to hear of no casualties with that," Clearly it was of an appropriate size, but he remained the image of a young kid using a live catapult. Could explain the minute smile.

"Excellent," If there was an item to roll up fun and nostalgia in as close to physical form.

Smiling kindly, "If it brought you fun, it certainly is as good as one,"

One of the key words known among every muggle and upbringer, though there have been certainly a number of wizards entering Disney magic, him included. "A splendid memory," All shared were splendid, but sometimes that was all one what could say.

Anyway.

Feirgrund wasn't too surprised on this response. Often the childhood brought the witch and wizard before them. Not always, but at times it was a picture perfect image. "One of the most ingenious inventions, sometimes even used with muggle adults for planning in a particular job," Though this might insight another idea in this young man.

Modified, Feirgrund nodded. It wouldn't be fun having a live snitch reach out of a young one's grip in an instant. "And a great foundation for motor skills," Foreshadowing? Perhaps now.

"Toys in general have multiple purposes, such that can be dwindled into age brackets. When young they're thought as just for fun and as you get older you may grow tired of them or choose to keep them for memories or to re-use. It can then be seen as a time waster or spender. The same goes for our muggle counterparts, though they have a greater variety of toys made, this could be due to them going through a quicker process with getting approved for use." But enough on that, Feirgrund preferred to keep the lectures as a minimum, especially when toys were being dangled in front of them to use.

"Alright now, line up and come take a box. They aren't heavy so don't fret over the size, you can open them as soon as you return to your desks," Standing as they came one by one before he hand them each before he waited on each to reveal what was inside the boxes. Each did not look exactly the same with many sorted colors spread across the classroom of this item.

Once everyone was examining it, he added "This right here is a Pogo stick, as I'm sure those acquainted with muggle history may share a familiar sense with this. Don't fret if unfamiliar, we will use these today. But for now, two questions, one of your choice to answer. To those not familiar, what purpose could you imagine this toy being used for with muggles? Those familiar with the item, what wizard-equivalent do you see sharing in common with this and how so?"

OOC: Thank you for your patience, everyone! You can now grab a box and examine the contents before answering or pondering over the last question(s). ^_^ We'll move on to the first activity in around 24 hours from now.

Apparently Jude wasn’t the only one who was fond of his phone. He glanced at Brandon; he knew that the younger Hufflepuff grew up in the Muggle world and would be rather familiar with the devices. Then there was Keigh who shared the same love for many things with him. Yes, he recalled that little guitar! No one could separate his sister from it back then!

Jude found that he liked to hear about his classmates’ favourite toys. It was definitely the moment to get an insight into those he didn’t know that well. Soon enough, they were moving on. It was just a matter of minutes before they found out exactly what the contents of those boxes were. He joined the line, collected the box handed to him then eagerly returned to his seat.

A purple pogo stick!

Neat!

"Bouncing Bulbs, Professor,’’ the seventh year replied, dead serious. Feirgrund hadn’t mentioned that the stick had to be equivalent to a piece of wizarding equipment so a form of vegetation should be acceptable as an answer. “They both bounce around though the Bulbs do so on their own.”
