Default Office of Professor Madigan

♦ ♦ ♦

♦ ♦ ♦

The office of Professor Madigan is decored to the satisfaction of one who is looking for toasted comfort. A warm air greets one upon entry inside, neither stuffy nor too heated to make one uncomfortable or drowsy. Matching the tones of brown among the furniture and fireplace is the main source of heat. Decorated among the walls are his framed credentials in education and training. Followed by portraits of him with family and friends, and even former students during his Primary teaching years. Beside the fireplace are shelves of books and memorabilia.

The chairs and couch provided also add to the glow of comfort as well as the wall being magically charmed for a view of the outdoors. Behind the main desk is where the Professor is normally seated at per guests' arrival. Care to visit? Be sure you mind the office hours and then knock before he can grant you access inside. He will be with you shortly.

Retaking Defense Against the Dark Arts with those a year below her was one of the most mortifying things Kinsay James ever had to do. But. But it was important that she did it. So. So she was trying really, really hard not to think about how humiliating it was. Or how stupid her peers probably thought she was. Or how everyone in the entire castle probably knew that she had failed her OWL.

But it was so hard not to focus on those things.

Especially because she was still struggling in lessons. It just. It was just that. It was just that Defense Against the Dark Arts was hard and without Nem around to help her any more, she had to figure it all out on her own and she just couldn't. She needed him. She needed Fi. She needed someone else to do it for her because she couldn't do it by herself. She just couldn't.

And so now, having run out of options, she was here, standing outside of Professor Madigan's door, sad and pitiful. But. BUT maybe should leave. No. She needed to talk to him. BUT what if he was busy and didn't want to talk to her. No. She needed to try. BUT what if he was super mean one on one. No. No, no, no. She needed to knock.

So that's what she did. Knock, knock.

Annnnd .... Hopefully he wouldn't answer, and she could just leave and say that she tried.

Adom was not here. Or rather he would've not been around if he hadn't decide to have a nice fresh cup of tea before heading out to restock on some supplements.. Well, that was the general plan before knocking occurred.

Setting his cup down with a soft clank, he paused for a moment. Someone's outside? Considering if it was a serious matter or mischievous intent, he gave the situation the benefit of the doubt and got up to open the door.

"Ah," His brows rose as if taken aback. "Miss James, what can I do for you?" Before waiting patiently on her response.

The more she thought about it, the more she regretted coming to his office in the first place. Kinsay didn't have a problem with Professor Madigan. Not really. Not aside from how hard his class was and that wasn't really his fault. It was the universe's fault. But. But. What if he knew her mum? Or what if he was one of her nan's students? Or. Like. Just. It was so embarrassing. This was so embarrassing. She was so embarrassed.

So much so that by the time her professor had moved to open the door, Kinsay was already starting to feel sweaty and gross and just all around really not good. But. But she tried to rally anyway because. Because what else was she meant to do? She couldn't just RUN. That'd be weird. She wasn't weird. She was just awful at Defense Against the Dark Arts. Even though she was supposed to be the best at it. It was supposed to be her best subject. Not. She wasn't supposed to. It just. It was just that.

"Um," was all Kinsay managed to say as she averted her eyes and looked down to her feet. Um. "Could I- Do you have time to- Are you busy, Professor? Because, like, if you are, I can come back later." Or never. Or maybe he could see how hard this was for her and just give her an E? Or even an A. She wouldn't complain about an A. At least an A would be passing... which is much more than she could say about her lousy P.

Besides the minor delay, what had taken him aback was on seeing Miss James in particular. Almost as matched as her time in class she seemed to be having trouble with expressing herself and the effort wasn't unnoticed.

It took a moment for Adom to be self-aware on the hard look he was liking giving off. An unfortunate side effect of his past building a hard exterior. It had softened with Primary teaching but the recent years after previous teaching had brought the exterior back. He cleared his throat after in effort to break off any other demeanor he was giving off to soften. "I can make time, why don't you step on in? Can make you tea or another beverage," It wasn't exactly comfortable standing outside and he had a fresh kettle already.

Adom then stepped aside for her to enter in or perhaps change her mind.

".... Okay, thanks," she replied sheepishly, ducking her head and hurrying into his office. This was so so so so embarrassing. She really couldn't think of anything worse. No, that wasn't true. There were lots of worse things, but that didn't make this terrible thing any less terrible. So. Um. Yeah. Maybe. Um.

"Can I have tea, please?" Not because she wanted tea, but because it'd give her something to hold on to, and then, maybe she'd feel a little less awkward about this. Because ... As it was, she was feeling very, very awkward. So, naturally, she did what anyone in her position would do: Pivot.

"Who's that, Professor?" She pointed to one of the photos along the wall. Hoping that maybe they could talk about his life instead. Sometimes it was hard to remember that Professors were real people, with lives of their own, but sometimes, moments like these, made her stop and wonder. Professor Madigan was a teenager once too. He had to be. Even if it was hard to imagine. Maybe school was hard for him too and maybe he got a P on one of his OWLs and maybe he had a friend who distracted him during lessons and maybe he had relationship drama and and and.

"Coming right up," Adom replied. Luckily the kettle was still at a good temperature so he just merely took another cup with the tea bag and poured the contents in for her. "You take sugar or honey in your tea?" Glancing up to see where she was pointing at.

"Ah, that was me in America visiting my older brother and his husband at one of the Quidditch games. My brother-in-law Edgar Forsfelle was a Seeker for the Sweetwater All-Stars." There were quite a few pictures on the wall detailing his life. "Next to it is me with some friends at a party in the Trophy room that the Headmaster started in my seventh year. There had been tainted brownies served with love potions that livened the party up." He was quite fortunate to not have some himself due to eating before the desert was served. The memories were fond for him to go over.. but was there a reason he should go over them?

Ah.. The Professor set the tea in the small plate down for her as his mind returned to the situation, "I'd be happy to share more memories with you," Walking back to where his own tea sat, checking the temperature of it before adding, "though is that why you're here today?" Miss Kinsay James was one to ask a plentiful amount of questions, but were these what she had in mind? He didn't know so why not ask. Perhaps it was her way of finding comfort before settling in.

"Honey, please," she replied without hesitation, before adding, "but just a little." Too much honey overpowered the tea, but without enough it would taste too bitter. There was a golden ratio. "And do you have milk? The regular kind?" Not the healthy ultra organic stuff, that always tasted funny. And almond milk was too illusive. How did they milk almonds anyway? Super fake. Kins only drank the real stuff.

Between her complicated tea order and questions about photos, Kinsay as sure she could distract Professor M long enough to warrant leaving without actually having a conversation about DADA. See? Genius. Give her an O, please! "My dad used to play Quidditch. Is the American league any good?" She hadn't ever heard anyone rave about it. Plus, with her dad having played for a UK team, maybe she was a bit biased (though she'd never admit it).

She did have a follow up question about the spiked brownies too, but before she had the chance to ask, Professor M pivoted. Clearly he had caught what she was doing and ..... it made Kins feel a little silly. And a little ... well, little. Um. "I, uh-- No, it's not," she admitted, walking up to one of the chairs on the other side of Professor M's desk and rested her hands atop its' back. She didn't really feel like sitting. This was the part where she was supposed to tell him why she was here. Except. She just looked down at her feet instead.

It was amusing the requests Madigan was getting on how to prep her tea. Either she had a specific routine or was looking for another chance to prolong expressing her thoughts. "Mhmm.." Nodding along the way. He had both regular and lactose-free options in the milk department without the presence of nuts given it being one of the more common allergies. A little bit of honey, a dash of regular fresh from the creature milk. Cue the stirring before serving.

"Really? What team did he play for?" Though he didn't play Quidditch now, he was a big fan of the sport. "Well, I'd be biased in reporting that since I have ties with an American team. They hold out on their own well, much better than the Chudley Cannons for one."

Ah, the hesitation. If he were the sneaky type with his students there would've been some truth potion mixed into the tea, but that was totally unnecessary and unlike his style. A different approach more on the good moral side was along his, "Perhaps I should ask rather, what would you like to talk about today?" The free choice. She could tell what's really on her mind or in an effort to be more truthworthy talk about things she enjoyed. The Professor would have to see how she faired with the choice.

It was a bit of both, to be fair, though she probably wouldn't admit to it. Plus, it wasn't being picky so much as it was having standards. So. There was nothing wrong with complicated requests. Professor Madigan was the one who offered. It was his fault for even giving her the option in the first place. He should've known better. Mhm. Kins waited patiently for her tea, still looking over to the photos in hopes that they could chat about them for a bit longer.

"Mhm, Appleby Arrows," she replied proudly. "He was starting keeper. And my nan used to play for the team way back in the day too." Maybe her ties to quidditch would be enough to convince Professor M to give her an O. See, they were bonding? That's gotta count for something. "Poor Chudley Cannons. They can't ever catch a break." See? Bonding.

But then there was the dreaded question.

.......................

It was a terrible question. Kinsay hated this question.

"Can I be honest?" She started, but didn't wait for his answer. "I'd rather talk about anything else in the whole world than talk about my, um," she paused this time, briefly glancing over at the door. "This room is soundproof, right?" Again, she didn't wait for the reply. "I, um, I'm doing really poorly in your class, Professor. I mean, you know that. Probably." Or maybe he didn't realize she was a sixth year retaking a fifth year class and she just totally outed herself. Um. Anyway. So. Yeah. "I just. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm studying real hard. And practicing the spells after class. But it doesn't- I can't get it to stick." She pressed her palms against the back of the chair, nervously running her thumbs along the wooden panels. This was so so so embarrassing. She was so embarrassed.

Though he may not have gotten a chance to verbalize his thoughts in between, his responses mentally did more than fill in the space. The office was sound-proof, allowing him to play records at his desired volume for example. Coincidentally, the conversation moved along in the intended direction, after all. He was patient. The professor listened, nodding as Miss James essentially confirmed his own thoughts on the matter. But one thing was for sure, she didn't want to talk her... performance? Was that appropriate? She presented an effort.

"Perhaps I should ask, what are your favorite lessons? Where do you feel the strongest at?" Madigan asked. From his observations and a quick glance at her other classes, she was eligible for N.E.W.T level in Charms & Transfiguration. Two lessons that went well in theory for Defense. So possibly... well, she was clearly uncomfortable now though, so a subtle reminder was needed. "One of the more important focuses in Defense is facing obstacles and attempting to conquer them. You already are excelling the first step with taking on the subject again, whilst most would've dropped it after failing." But of course, he wasn't going to completely ignore her grades, "Passing or Failing my course, may matter academically, but personally, the grades can only take you so far in theory. In real battle, the classroom structure will likely be thrown out the window. You could be getting an O in the class, but in battle depending on the circumstance, perhaps all the spells and tactics you learned became forgotten and you chose to stay hidden and run away. Or having achieved a D, you remembered one spell and used it to your advantage with helping a comrad and the both of you surviving." Was he painting the picture clear? Well, no matter since he did say a lot at once.

Incase his voice had been stiff earlier, a soft smile emerged with his voice lessening in a more sympathetic tone. "I do have a suggestion for you Miss James," What could it be? Extra course work? Assigned partner? Tutoring? Early-morning drill course? "I didn't see your name on the Dueling Club list, perhaps with the lack of grades you could see some improvement when it's all for fun." No dreaded exams or homework. "It's optional, of course, but it could help give you even more defensive experience." Her choice, after all, though he was curious on her thoughts regarding it.

.......... Huh? Kinsay gave professor M a funny look. What did her favorite classes have to do with anything? They weren't here to talk about those. If they were, this wouldn't be nearly as nerve-wracking. Though, perhaps, he was giving her an easy out. So. So she'd gladly take it without complaint. "Astronomy and Arithmancy. I like Charms too, but I'm best at Astronomy and Arithmancy..." She liked being good at things. Hated being bad at them. H a t e d. So. So maybe he could see why she hated DADA so much? Yeah.

His reassurances, though well-meaninged, did very little to cheer her up. She could tell he was trying, she really could. But. But it wasn't like retaking the class was HER choice. Kins decided against telling him that though. She was bad at his class, but she wasn't daft! And what he was saying about grades made sense, it really, really did. Promise and everything. But. But like. "But grades are what my parents see," again, she ducked her head in shame. It felt like a silly thing to say, but. But yeah. It didn't make it any less true.

His smile did help though, even if just the littlest, littlest bit. But again, she shook her head. "I can't. I can't duel in front of people." Everyone would see how bad she was. And the younger years would make her look silly. And everyone would laugh.
