Default Transfiguration Lesson 1: TBA

It’s a crisp sunny Autumn afternoon on the grounds, a little cool but not cold enough to be uncomfortable. Hopefully you’ve remembered to dress comfortably for today’s transfiguration lesson! As you make your way down the path, you find Professor Carton standing beside a chalkboard, but it’s the object behind him that is bound to draw attention.

A towering hedge maze covered in vines looms behind the professor. Not to worry, these aren’t the same vines from last term! What is the purpose of the maze? Only time will tell! For now, Professor Carton greets the arriving students, “Hello! Please stand in a semicircle and wait for the lesson to begin. Don’t go near the maze yet!”

OOC: Welcome to the first OOC transfiguration lesson of term 60! Remember that this is not the first IC lesson your characters would’ve had with Carton this term. If you haven’t already done so, please familiarize yourself with the class rules. We’ll begin in ABOUT 24 HOURS HAS STARTED!

Lesson Progression:

Question 1
Question 2
Incarcolvo & Mini Activity
Vinea Funiculus & Main Activity

It was always life or death or nearly dying, Professor Carton knew that right? She 100% did not want to die prematurely and she really felt like it was always the case for Hogwarts these days. She wanted to point that out but knew that it wouldn't much be appreciated.

Survival of the fittest, dinosaurs didn't really have to do much to survive in her opinion. "Well it would better serve if you could avoid natural disasters, or you'd end up like dinosaurs." She'd seen enough of the dig sights her parents had been to to know that if you couldn't survive a natural disaster than you wouldn't even need to worry about using the environment to your advantage. But a lot of the other students had valid points.

Yukie Rasting would never miss a Transfiguration class as she had deemed it to be her favourite subject since the beginning of time...or at least, from the moment she was able to understand that all these branches of magic were and their differences from one another. So, anyway, she was here and wiggled a bit excitedly in her place beside Mercer. And now they were talking about survival of the fittest, which she's heard of but didn't really absorb much of in the past.

But she was willing to try. Yukie was nothing but the try-hard-to-participate type, most of the time. There was a lot of camouflage talk, and then the answer of EATING the environment from that boy (Milo). She nodded agreeing to that, because he's RIGHT. Didn't they all eat from nature? It was just so true! And Mercer's answer on birds with CRYSTALS. She wasn't sure what that meant, but it made her giggle. His French accent was weird too, but she'd let her friend have it. With a teeny bit of thought, Yukie raised her hand. "You know peacocks, sir? They have these pretty big feathers like WHOOSH!" Yukie shared, with her arms spread out wide when she said the expression. "They're very colourful and makes them stand out. Apparently it's for mating." Somehow all this made sense to the question of the environment in her head, but Yukie sort of lost her train of thought. This was a Transfiguration class, not a Creatures class after all. "The prettier feathers make them be seen more, I guess. Something like that!" She smiled sheepishly and put her arms back down, folding them behind her.

Wait, what was the question? Arden was soooOOoo distracted by the maze! It was about animals, but a lot of people had already answered with good answers. But SHE was good at animal stuff, she HAD to answer. Plus, she liked the sound of her own voice, so yeah.

She raised her hand all excitedly. “Everyone’s mentioned coloring with animals. And temperature stuff. BUT time of day is also part of environment, right? Like some animals only hunt in the dark because of the way their senses are set up,” she was thinking of snakes and owls. “Their instincts just KNOW that to go out during the day wouldn’t serve them as well!” She smiled and nodded.

And not all snakes were night dwellers, but a LOT were.

Apollo was definitely distracted by the vines of the maze that Professor Carton seemed to suggest that they were not connected to the vines of the previous term. Yet the Gryffindor couldn't help but be wary of the maze. At least he was wearing comfortable clothing.

Survival of the fittest. He wasn't sure if it was really using the environment, but everyone seemed to be talking about temperatures and appearances. "Uh, intelligence... Using street and book smarts to help one get the advantage. Humans have it, but I suppose animals got smarts too in just a different way that isn't measured the same." You needed intelligence to survive. Was that why Maya liked reading so much?

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina was busy doodling random things on her parchment as she gave the question some thought - With this in mind, name one way that animals use their environment to their advantage.Hmmm. She immediately thought of camouflage but some of her classmates had already offered that answer and she was too bored to come up with something else so she stayed quiet.

Other than greeting the professor and going to stand near her cousin, Dahlia hadn't taken her eyes off of the maze. Well, not until the arrival of Tadhg anyhow. Feeling his hand slip into hers, she cast a sideways glance at him and smiled softly. "Hey, Tad. I-I don't know.. but whatever it is.. we'll take it on together.." As always they weren't alone and would have each others back.

Her gaze shifted back to the front as Professor Carton called attention to the class. 'Survival of the Fittest'. Oh, Dear Merlin. A slight shiver ran though her and she instinctively stepped closer to Tadhg, her hold on his hand tightening ever-so-slightly.

The start of the lessons first question was simple. How do creatures use their environment to their advantage? Creatures was her thing.. and yet she remained quiet today. Why? She didn't feel like repeating the very same things everyone else had said over and over again.

Surely the Professor had to know that he was torturing all the students, by not letting them in right this second. Raising her hand to answer the question. "They camouflage to blend into their environments." Not that Maxine was an expert by any means .. but this was Transfiguration right .. that seems more like a charm to her..... Best keep her opinion to herself for now.

"Camouflage" he answered as he raised his hand. "Turtles for example hide from predators by tucking their head and feet in their shell to look like a normal rock" he said, wondering what this question had to do with the maze.

Norman was not at all surprised that camouflage was one of the first answers said. He knew it was only a matter of time before that answer came up! He nodded approvingly as Benetti spoke. “Yes! Very good, Mr. Benetti,” he replied.

Another approving nod as Bixby gave the same answer moments later. “Correct, Miss Bixby.”

Norman knew camouflage was the most obvious answer, though he didn’t expect it to be quite this popular. Even so, he was pleased that O’Neill’s answer gave a specific example. “Yes, thank you for that example, Mr. O’Neill,” he said.

Yoon’s example was also right on the money. “Very good example of camouflage, Mr. Yoon,” Norman replied with a small smile.

The first question had most of the peers around her chime out answers about camouflage, but nobody had mentioned any creatures. Raising her hand Bella said "Professor Marchand, I've read somewhere that muggle penguins is black on their backs, and white on their tummies to guard them/shield them from predators both from above the waters edge and below water, like a sort of camouflage." It was nifty how nature had given penguins a skin camouflage from when they were born.

Maybe this time they'd work with partners and maybe Luca would be on his team and then they could talk.

The other kids began to arrive. SO MANY KIDS. Why was there always sooo many kids? They were all so BIG too

"Ooh ooh ooh!" Aiden said, waving his hand in the air and standing on his tippy-toes so he could be seen over the taller students (Aiden was barely over four feet). This question was about ANIMALS. He knew about THAT! It was the first question at Hogwarts he had ever known the answer to. "Butterflies!!!"

Then Aiden would freeze for a moment like a deer in headlights, because he had never ever spoked in front of all these people before and a grown-up too.

"U-um," Aiden said, holding up his teddy to hide behind before squeaking out an explanation. "Butterflies colors look like the environment so's birds and stuff won't see 'em. Um different butterflies in different places look different."

All the time she was giving her answer, Violet kept glancing over at the maze behind Professor Carton with misgiving. This was starting to remind her of one of Professor Trent's classes, and from what she could recall, none of her experiences dealing with mazes had ever turned out well.

Blink, blink. Was he hearing things, or did Connolly just call him-? Granted. Norman was no stranger to being called the wrong name. He’d been called Carlton, Canton, Carson, Carter… the list goes on. But usually it was something close to his actual name. The only Marchand he knew was a first year Hufflepuff girl who looked nothing like him. How Connolly could’ve gotten them confused was beyond him! “I’m Professor Carton,” he corrected her. “But yes, that’s correct. Thank you, Miss Connolly.”

For the record, Norman would’ve noticed Lockwood even without the noises and hand waving. He wasn’t oblivious enough to overlook a student, no matter how small! The answer earned the boy a slight eyebrow raise. How did butterflies relate to the question? Fortunately Lockwood elaborated before Norman had to prompt him to do so. “A form of camouflage,” he said, nodding approvingly. “Very good, Mr. Lockwood.”

Norman wasn’t blind to Blackthorne’s glances toward the maze, but he’d let it slide for now since her answer showed that she was paying attention. “Another form of camouflage,” he replied. “Good example, Miss Blackthorne.”

He'd already thrown out the first question by the time she'd looked up. Why were all the good answers already taken?! Now she had to come up with something super unique. Oh, OHHH. She had one! No, she wasn't that excited about the lesson. She was just happy she no longer had to come up with anything to say.

She raised to her hand. "There's this spider called the trap-door spider. It uses the ground to build some kind of trap door, and then when it sees a prey--BAM! It pops out and attacks," she explained. Which is why she was NOT going in that hedge. What did he have in there anyway?

The slight tickle in her throat she woke up with didn’t help the situation.

She was here to earn house points, though. She raised her hand. ”A way flying creatures use their environment is by scouting the ground for either prey or danger from the sky.”

Although Norman knew camouflage was going to be the most popular answer, he expected that luring and pursuing prey wouldn’t be far behind. And he wasn’t wrong. It wasn’t long before Prescott offered an example in the form of the trapdoor spider. “Excellent example, Miss Prescott,” he said with an approving nod. “Many creatures use their environment to their advantage when luring prey.” Not just spiders.

Ness’s answer was along the same lines, with a bit of the ever-popular camouflage answer thrown in. “Yes, that’s exactly what it would be,” he replied. “Very good, Miss Ness.”

Balthazar-Dos Santos also gave a prey-related answer, this time geared specifically toward flying creatures. “Correct, Miss Balthazar-Dos Santos,” he said, nodding.

Survival of the fittest sounded a little bit scary. The thought of any animals not surviving made him sad. But he did have some ideas for an answer, so he raised his hand. "Some animals, like...monekeys, are good at climbing and stuff so they can maybe get away from any other animals that might be chasing them."

Avoiding predators proved to be another popular answer. Gaeltheos’s example of small animal burrows earned a small smile from the professor. “True. Good example, Miss Gaeltheos,” Norman replied.

Ramsey’s example was radically different from Gaeltheos’s but still the same general idea of animals avoiding predators. It too got a slight approving smile. “Indeed they are,” he said. “Very good, Mr. Ramsey.”

Jude considered the question then raised his hand. “Some animals can use the environment to adjust their temperature, like chameleons. They change their colour to do so, going dark to absorb heat if they’re cold.”

Norman half-expected Anders to say camouflage like so many others had, but he was pleased when the boy’s answer went in a completely different direction. “Indeed they can,” he said, smiling slightly. Chameleons changing color was a rather interesting sight if he said so himself! “Very good, Mr. Anders.”

Norman blinked, unsure what to make of Valnetine’s answer. What exactly would crawling through the grass accomplish? More to the point, what did it have to do with transfiguration? He supposed it could sort of answer the question asked if you squint. Some creatures did crawl through long grass to stalk their prey. Was that what she was getting at? “Yes,” he replied. “Thank you, Miss Valentine.”

He didn't take much notice of the maze until the very quiet words of an older(?) student(?) just managed to reach his ears, something about things they could die doing. Milo turned, looked directly at the speaker, and then ahead at what commanded most of the attention around here.

It was true that labyrinths and mazes were often notably, throughout myth and lore and history, dangerous and deadly. Milo could see the appeal of it, when he shifted his perspective just so. In a maze, you could hide all sorts of traps and enemies and tricks that could make the person running it go slowly or quickly insane or dead. Take the Triwizard maze. Take Holmes' Murder Castle. Take Daedalus. But most mazes and labyrinths were just harmless mazes and labyrinths, and though it was always wise to be on guard, this one felt harmless too, and people could die doing anything also. But before he could point out as much to the Gryffindor(?) - beacon of reassurance that he was - the lesson had begun, and Milo decided not to bother.

He redirected his focus to the question instead, unable to ignore the one word and concept that kept cropping up in other answers. Camouflagecamouflagecamouflage. Camouflagecamouflagesabotage. From plenty of Hufflepuffs too, he couldn't ignore that either, and did not try to.

"They eat it." The environment. Animals ate it, or adapted to be able to eat it and not be poisoned by it where another creature might die from ingesting the very same thing. And they survived, unless something else killed them, like a predator, but not hunger, unless they had to compete for food or weren't able to get to it. Always more variables to consider.

Norman wasn’t at all surprised by Evans’s answer, though he still didn’t understand the aversion to footwear. Never mind, he supposed he didn’t have to understand. He replied with a slight nod as if to say, See that you are. Nothing more was said of the matter. The boy’s answer to the actual question got a slight smile. It just went to show that sometimes the simplest answer was the correct one! “They certainly do,” he said. “Good, Mr. Evans.”

Siri's attention was called to the front, slightly jumping at the professor's voice above the crowd. He had an urge to answer, the words stuck in his throat. He turned to look at Ash as she answered the proposed question and felt a little courage. "Umm." He squeezed out. "Demiguise use invisibility to hide..." It wasn't as eventful as the rest of the students' replies, but maybe he contributed enough?

Norman half-expected Hazelwood not to say anything but he was glad when the boy decided to speak up. He listened with a slight, encouraging smile. Hmm… not quite the answer he was expecting, but he could see how it related to the question. “And that enables them to use their environment to their advantage by blending into it,” he said. “Very good, Mr. Hazelwood.”

Which led him to another thought, and while he wasn't particularly sure it answered what Professor Carton was asking, he figured it was worth an answer.

He raised his hand and waited to be called on. "Similarly to what Lisa said, some animals very coat's can change based on climate in the area. Even with a house cat, they're fur is thicker in winter months but when it starts to warm up you can notice they start to shed more." Because they were adapting in order to not overheat themselves.

The younger Nam’s answer sounded similar to Fox’s example of seals storing fat, but it was no less correct. Norman nodded approvingly. “Correct, Miss Nam,” he replied.

Then the elder Nam spoke up and added on to that answer in an impressive display of sibling teamwork. His answer also earned a nod from the professor. “Very good, Mr. Nam,” he said.

While Cook’s answer wasn’t technically on topic, it wasn’t completely unrelated either. Norman had to give her credit; it was an interesting bit of information. “Very good,” he said with an approving nod. “Thank you for sharing that information, Miss Cook.”

She couldn't help but smile at that one first year Hufflepuff's mention of butterflies. Partly because of his enthusiasm and the adorable little teddy he had with him, but also because butterflies had become quite special to her, since her Patronus had taken the form of one. It had felt like such an accomplishment, finally casting a corporeal one last term, and she couldn't help the fondness she had for them now.

But enough thinking. She ought to contribute with her own answer to the discussion. "There are different types of mimicry that a lot of creatures have developed," she said, raising her hand. "One of them is where a non-venomous or non-poisonous creature develops features similar to another one that is toxic to eat, like the red-spotted purple butterflies mimicking the pipevine swallowtails. It's more difficult to tell the difference between them, so it can ward off predators who don't want to be poisoned."

Norman had to admit he didn’t expect anyone to mention mimicry as a way creatures used their environment to their advantage, but he was pleased the Grimm made the connection. “Excellent example, Miss Grimm,” he said with a slight smile.

"Oh." Wait, he knew this one. "Birds have like... a crystal in their brains or whatever that's like 'AH-HA ZIS WAY IS NORTH, OUI OUI'," Mercer had a really good French accent, because all birds were French. Everyone knew that. "And so their brains just know how to get where they are going. All together. And eat ze croissant, oui oui!"

Okay, what was with the French accent? Norman had no idea, but that aside, he knew what Branxton was getting at. “Close,” he said. “It’s not a crystal; it’s a region of the bird’s brain called ‘cluster N’.” He saw how the words cluster and crystal could be confused! “The bird’s eyes interact with this region, which helps them determine which way is north. Very good, Mr. Branxton!”

"When creatures feel threatened they will usually fight back if hiding is not an option." Darius answered, "I imagine they would try to lure them into their territory or into a specific spot before taking advantage." Most of the other classmates had interesting examples.

At first, Norman half-expected Potter’s answer to go in a similar direction as the earlier examples of avoiding predators or luring prey, but he was pleased that it did neither. It was more geared toward defense than anything else. “Sound reasoning, Mr. Potter,” he said with a slight smile.

Not wanting to give the maze any more of her attention, she kept herself occupied by looking around the slowly-forming semicircle. It was no surprise that many of her classmates opted to take ‘dress comfortably’ to an extreme and, for whatever reason, there was some strange drama unfolding between the third years.

Nothing Kinsay cared to pay attention to, so Ivy’s arrival was a welcome change. ”Hey,” she smiled in return only to look towards her professor when he called their attention. His question, while an easy one, wasn’t anything Kinsay wanted to answer.

But there was something she wanted to ask. (Surprise!) ”Are we going into the maze, Professor?” Because dress comfortably or not, Kinsay James did not want to be doing that. ”Hogwarts doesn’t have a good history with them.” It was twice now that a maze ended with the use of a killing curse.

One, not too long ago.

And she wasn't even trying to be incessant (mostly).

Norman showed no outward sign of reaction to James’s question. What kind of question was that? Why would he have gone through the trouble of conjuring a maze if the students weren’t meant to enter it? “Yes…” he replied. He had to admit she did have a point though, which was why he took precautionary measures with the maze. “That’s true, though in one of those historical cases, someone created an illegal portkey. In the other, the maze was invaded by pureblood supremacist lunatics.” See? He hadn’t forgotten, nor would he ever. “Neither of which are the case today. I conjured the amaze just before all of you arrived and have been guarding it the whole time, so no one could’ve gotten inside. And the only objects you’ll have to touch in there are things you’ll transfigure yourself, so you’ll know exactly what they are.”

Did that ease her mind? In his own way, he really was trying.

His attention was, temporarily, on Lisa while half of it was still spinning off in other directions too - namely with the words of one Maya Nam echoing in the back of his mind - but he managed to stay in orbit to at least answer her question. "Little bit of both," he replied coyly. "They don't always have to be exclusive to one another." What DID catch his attention was Remy moving to LITERALLY the other side of the semicircle, a plot twist that had his arm slipping off Lisa's shoulder as he sort of unabashedly stared at where precisely she was standing. Next to pseudo arch nemesis, Daniel Yoon, to be precise. She had smiled at him...so why was she not staying over here too? His gaze did shift a little as another Hufflepuff joined his immediate vicinity...but gave zero acknowledgement to the Gryffindor and solely focused on Lisa. Sure. No problem. Not irritating at all Alfie Ramsey.

Arms crossing his chest, his balance shifting between his feet, Atlas' attention wavered between whatever it was the professor was saying and the duo across from him. Eyes up front should be simple enough instructions to follow, one would think, but apparently today was just not a straightforward kind of day.

Survival of the fittest though...were really not the words he wanted to hear at the top of a lesson. He was hardly fit at all!

But...well...as to the question...Atlas was mostly mumbling to himself about differences between evolutionary adaption versus individual adaptation and internal adaptation versus physical adaptation - all things he knew the very baseline off but were things he could delve into all that deeply - despite the amount of muttering he was doing that, well, honestly only those directly next to him would be able to hear. To those across the semicircle or even the professor...he was basically just flapping his lips to himself.

He did catch a lot of his peers mentioning camouflage, which was the first thing that came to his mind as well, though as people spoke on he found himself pointing (literally, as he do) at Alfie once again when he mentioned climbing. "Best if you have a grasping tail for that." The climbing. "It like to learn out to transfigure one of those." Imagine how high one could get in the climbing tree on the grounds with that? "Transfiguration sort of enables us to cheat evolution, when you think about it."

Flamsteed’s answer earned a slight smile from the professor. “Stop by my office sometime, and I’ll teach you,” he said in reply to the boy’s comments about a grasping tail. Did the others catch that? The offer applied to anyone wanting to learn that particular skill, not just Flamsteed. To the other part of his answer, Norman said, “Excellent point, Mr. Flamsteed. Hold on to that thought.” They may or may not be coming back to that later!

Norman blinked, unsure what to make of Rivers’s answer. It was a valid point, though not exactly what he asked. “That’s certainly true,” he replied with a slight nod. “Thank you, Miss Rivers.”

Norman was not the laughy type - far from it! But even he had to stifle a chuckle at Rasting’s impression of a peacock spreading its tail feathers. “Correct, Miss Rasting,” he said. Not technically answering the question he asked, but it was factually correct nonetheless. And it had to do with animals. He’d give her that.

Toros’s excitement did not go unnoticed, and it earned a small smile from the professor. It was nice to see a student so eager! “Right,” he said, nodding in agreement at her first point. “Good example, Miss Toros.” And outside the box too. That was very much appreciated!

Using street and book smarts to help one get the advantage. Humans have it, but I suppose animals got smarts too in just a different way that isn't measured the same." You needed intelligence to survive. Was that why Maya liked reading so much?

Norman pondered Adara-Stark’s answer for a moment. It wasn’t too far off the mark if you think about it hard enough. While intelligence in and of itself didn’t have to do with the environment, it did enable creatures to use their environment to their advantage. “Good point, Mr. Adara-Stark,” he replied with an approving nod.

As always they weren't alone and would have each others back.

As Norman scanned the area for any more hands in the air, his blue-green eyes momentarily landed on Nichols. He gave her an encouraging nod, just in case she had something to say and was holding back for whatever reason. No? Okay, moving on…

He was mildly surprised to see that Donovan also remained quiet. That wasn’t like her, but he wasn’t overly concerned. He didn’t mind quiet students, as long as they were paying attention.

Seeing no more hands in the air, Norman took that as his cue to move on. “Right, so as you’ve heard, there are many ways in which animals use their environment to their advantage,” he addressed the class. With a flick of his wand, all of the aforementioned answers appeared on the chalkboard beside him.

He allowed a few minutes for the students who were so inclined to copy down the information listed before continuing, “Transfiguration and well, magic in general, allows us to use our environment to our advantage too, though instead of us having to adapt to it, we can adapt it to our needs. As Mr. Flamsteed so eloquently put it, it enables us to cheat evolution. Now, what is one way that transfiguration helps us make the most of our environment, be it a specific spell or a general concept?”

OOC: Sorry for the massive delay in replying! I was sick in bed with a fever for 3 days, and this post took way longer to write than I expected. Anyway, question 2 is up. For this, Norman is asking for an example of how transfiguration can be used to change one’s environment. It can be as general or as specific as you choose, but please limit yourselves to one answer so everyone can have a chance. We’ll move on in 18-24 HOURS.

Stuart thought about it for a moment, his eyes on the maze. He then raised his hand. "There's conjuring." he said. "Specifically, conjuring fire helps us to get rid of unwanted stuff or keep warm or even scare away unwanted company." That seemed useful to staying alive or comfortable in many different environments.

Oh dear, oh dear! Bella went an awful shade of flushed pink as she realized her mistake. Would professor Carton reprimand her for her disrespect? So humiliating. When her mother heard about this she'd probably get a howler. Towering in her seat Bella waited for professor Carton's response which came a moment or two later. She dreaded pointloss or worse. Only thing he did miraculously though was correct her on his name. She was saved by the bell?

Baffled and not sure what to do Bella still apologized since it was the right thing to do. "I'm sorry Professor Carton. I really meant no disrespect. It won't happen again." Could she get away with slipping down under her desk for the rest of the class? This would reach the rumor mill in no time. Feeling self- conscious now Bella still raised her hand to give an answer in a clear but small voice. "You can use the water making spell aguamenti if you are in the wilderness and don't have any clean water to drink."

Marchand? Jude’s brow furrowed in confusion before he reached out his elbow closest to Bella to nudge her gently. While he doubted that Carton would mind the mistake {because he was something of a chill professor}, he didn’t want anyone else to think that his friend wasn’t paying attention fully to the lesson. “Carton, not Marchand,” he whispered.

Jude grinned up at Carton, thrilled that his answer stood out. “Thanks, professor.’’ Not that there weren’t far more fascinating replies from some of his classmates. He was impressed in fact. But how could humans adapt to their environs using Transfiguration? The Hufflepuff thought. Stuart was right - Conjuration was one way. “If you find yourself in a situation where you find yourself falling from a great height, one of the quickest Transfiguration spells to use is the Softening Charm. The ground below can be changed into something suitable for landing without damage to yourself.”

How to cheat evolution? No specific spell names came to mind for the Ravenclaw, but a situation in history certainly did, so he raised his hand and waited to be called on. "You can transfigure yourself", or someone else if not alone, "or a body part into something that would already be better suited for the environment. Like in the Triwizard Tournament, for the second task Viktor Krum turned his head into a shark so he could breathe underwater." Genius if you asked him. Though he didn't know what the spell was, and he was secretly hoping the Professor would offer that.

Professor Carton had thought she was creative? Just he WAIT. She could be the most creative person EVER. Ha haaaa! She wasn't sure what Atlas meant by cheating evolution, nor did she fully understand evolution as it was, but that was okay. She knew the basics (she thought).

But aaaanyways. How DID humans manage to survive in environments they weren't originally supposed to survive? Her first thought was broomsticks with flying, but that wasn't transfiguration. That was more charms, right? So Arden had to triple think about how Transfiguration was involved. That was when an older Ravenclaw [Stewie] mentioned conjuring. Arden totally forgot how conjuring was considered Transfiguration, and her brain, for the LIFE of her, could not remember anything they had talked about in the past. And soooOoooo she flipped to the beginning of her notes to reread anything she had written in the past and completely managed to forget she was in CLASS.

Welp.

She was completeeeeely absorbed in her notes and did NOT answer the current question. Whoooooops.

Uhhh...okay, why did it suddenly seem that everybody else knew way more about Transfiguration than Delilah did? She blinked in response to the professor's first question. She didn't have much Transfiguration under her belt, so to speak. She had no idea how to come up with a way Transfiguration would help her make the most of her environment...

She finally raised her hand. "I'm guessing there's maybe some spell that can help us camouflage ourselves in that maze? Or maybe grow taller than the maze to see our way through?" she suggested. She had a feeling they were going in that maze, like it or not, so she assumed whatever was coming next would relate to it.

Pleased that she had actually got an answer correct Bonnie listened intently for the next one. It was hard for her to concentrate what with that rather inviting looking maze just over there. Her eyes and concentration kept darting between Professor Carton and the towering maze that she was itching to explore.

This was the sort of question Bonnie had been dreading. Having lived a normal muggle life until now she had no experience of magical transformations. Thinking about the environment around her, what about something to do with the weather? Once again raising her hand, 'Professor, can witches and wizards use transfiguration to help deal with severe weather conditions. For example to help them get around in very deep snow?' She hoped it wasn't too obvious this was a clueless guess.

Not crystals? Mercer was fine with that and he attempted to file it into his busy little brain... but it probably got misplaced somewhere in the back closet of his mind palace. He wanted to ask some follow up questions about croissants, but it appeared that they were moving on.

"Oh! What if you just like... made everything tiny? Like made the maze so tiny that you could just step over it like it was a pile of leaves? If that was something I was dealing with and I knew how to do any spells and I had my wand on me at the time, I would just... zap it all tiny tiny."

Sirius was a little taken aback by the professor's approval. A smile curled around the corner of his mouth. It felt nice and he felt a little more comfortable. "Could you use...transfiguration to change into an animal fit to the environment?"

It wasn't all THAT often Atlas went to professor's offices without being called upon to do so...though he was quickly learning more and more that he sort of needed to suck it up and do just that. Especially when it came to his niche interests...which reminded him he needed to seek out the Charms professor still. Eventually. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe next week. Eh, eventually. Which was the exact same sentiment he offered to this professor. "Sure! Eventually," he chipped with an eager nod, the implications being that he might come knocking down the man's door right after class - though it was more likely to be in...a couple of weeks. He tended to forget these excitements quickly, especially when he had several going on at once and physical reminds of others in his pockets.

Hands clasped together, a visual reminder that he was holding a thought, Atlas waited for class to continue and honestly felt a little puff of pride. Little mental pat on the back to himself for having a useful little musing, though since he had already offered his analysis and offer of human transfiguration by way of modifying the bum to have a tail...the Gryffindor felt he had already contributed to this follow up question thoroughly.

So, the fourth year was just going to keep quiet and look entirely too proud of himself for a couple of moments before getting distracted by a leaf blowing about on the ground. Whooooooosh to the left. Whooooooosh to the right. Whooooooooosh corkscrew spinning.

Oh wait. No. There was a thought.

"Professor!" he gasped as the thought came to him, hand shooting up to follow protocol and all. "Magic always leaves traces, right? So if human transfiguration leaves its traces somehow...and it is a means of cheating evolution...does that mean that performing magical modifications on the human body could theoretically be harmful to our evolution as a species?"

There were many more where that came from. Milo often tended towards the simple answers, though more often than not they consisted of complex concepts condensed down into as few words as possible, usually a few words that made little sense. Not that last one. That one really was a very straightforward concept, condensed into a few words that made a lot of sense.

As they moved on, Milo's ears pricked up at an answer provided by a... someone else, somewhere here. Evanesco. Where do Vanished objects go? Non-being. Nowhere and everywhere. Nothing and everything. If he was Vanished, he would become a part of the environment, making the most of it while being lost to it. Everything and nothing. Dead and alive, until such time he was re-conjured, and the status of his existence assured. Schrödinger's Milo.

Suddenly, Milo, whose mind had quite clearly been wandering far from the topic of discussion these last few minutes, returned to it with a query for Mr Carton. One that could have waited, yes, but which he preferred to propose now, quite neglecting to raise his hand. "Will you Vanish someone and see if it's possible to retrieve them?" He volunteered one of the Hufflepuffs. If (as was Milo's theory) it didn't work, not only would his curiosity be temporarily sated, but it would be one less Hufflepuff to worry about. "Maybe you would have to transfigure them first."

See, so she was right about the peacocks. Though she hadn't really made its full connection to the environment, Yukie was pleased with her answer. For the next question, there was a lot of conversation already and a lot of additional questions. This was fun! Yukie liked flowing conversations, although it was a bit hard to keep track when there were so many already.

Vanishing. Magic leaving traces. Evolution. A whole topic parkour in her brain! Trying to stay with the first question though, Yukie raised her hand. She must answer before she got lost in her thoughts again. "You can transfigure your surroundings or yourself to reach tall things like trees. Very helpful for small ones like me," she said. "Oh and, professor, metamorphmaguses.... uhm.... metamorphmagi have an advantage with that, yeah? They can make their necks extra long like a giraffe's!" Yukie just had to bring into the topic, because she knew some metamorphma-plural forms in her life.

Okay so maybe her answer hadn't been exactly what he was looking for, but it was one of those moments that she felt like the other answers were very on point and didn't want to repeat their answer. Her hand was flowing across the page trying to capture everyones notes on how you can transfigure yourself to help adapt to your surroundings. These were always interesting to see what people thought and how the lesson would progress. It was something that interested her, she was far too deep in her thoughts on ranking the ways they could transfigure to give her own answer.

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina had stopped doodling at this point. She set her quill down and leaned back against her chair - pulling her attention to the now and present, very well aware that OWLs were just months away at this point.

"What about animagus, professor? Completely transforming oneself into an animal.. could maybe help them fit in with a particular environment??"

No, but see. Kinsay still didn't want to go into the maze. She was quite incessant, hadn't he heard? Relentless, stubborn, unwavering when she made up her mind. Mazes were bad news. She did not want it.

And she wasn't planning to answer this question - as a protest, but when Atlas asked his question, Kinsay raised her hand without thinking. "For it to affect everyone's evolution, wouldn't it have to be more than just a few random people doing it? Are there even enough wizards for that to be possible?" And also. "Can you change your genes with magic if you really wanted to?" This one wasn't directly related to Atlas' question, but the thought came to mind and now she needed to know.

So.

"Well you grew this really cool maze" Maxine motioned toward the maze right ... next to year ... she even touched it with her hand as she motioned ... she couldn't get any closer ... unless...... She took one more step toward the entrance ... she was determined to be the first one in ... all though she had no idea really what she would do once she got in there.

"So we can use magic to make things grow to meet our needs." ... once again .. sounded like charms ... maybe the classes were combined.
