Default The Lake

Graphic credit: Felixir

The large freshwater lake of Hogwarts is located just south of the castle. About half a mile wide in diameter, the lake dominates much of the school's landscape, a steely and ominous mass of icy water in the winter, yet an inviting and refreshing sight once the weather starts to heat up. On one of its banks, a towering beech tree stands sentinel, and is a popular location to meet and relax. Castle-side of the lake stands the boathouse.

You may swim in the lake, but be careful, and also mindful of the creatures that reside here. Merpeople, grindylows, and the Great Squid, to name but a few, call these watery depths their home. You would do well to leave them in peace. If they feel like it, they'll come to you; the Giant Squid, who goes by the name of Bartholomew Henry, has been known to bask in the shallows on sunny days.

OOC: Please do not RP for the Giant Squid.

Aria was ready for that. She suspected that Fox might not want to speak to her. Did Aria mind? Not in the least. She was quite happy to lie on the sand and watch the clouds drift lazily by. The sort of mirrored her mood right then: laziness.

But then…

Words! Words from Fox! What a surprise!

Aria ignored the reluctance in Fox’s voice. “Hmm. It kinda does. Though I see it having a wonky looking kind of beak.” Did the Ravenclaw see that too? “Umm…” Ms. McLeod watched as another cloud drift by directly over her. “Because Madam Rowena had a thing for eagles? Or maybe she thought that eagles are sharper than ravens? Aren’t eagles like these brilliant predators?”

"Maybe it's and eagle that hurt itself and can't eat properly as a result. It's going to die. It is a cloud, after all. Clouds die pretty fast." That was why you were supposed to treat your thoughts like clouds and let them pass. Ash didn't really follow that advice.

"No way eagles are smarter than ravens. Well, I suppose they're smart about hunting. Ravens are crazy though. They make tools and stuff. Super intelligent animals." Ash thought about it for a long time. Perhaps she wanted to show there was more to Ravenclaws than just book smartness? No, ravens were clever and made practical use of their skills. "I suppose it was because eagles are magnificent." While they were on that thought... "Why do people think hufflepuffs are weak or something? The Hufflepuff mascot is literally a badger." Badgers were quite terrifying. "They could have made the Slytherin mascot a raven. The gryffindor lion makes sense. Lions go in groups and sometimes they are chill." She thought about it some more. "I guess it's all about the symbolism of things, even if they're not totally accurate."

Ash remembered that she was not talking to Aria. She fell silent. She wanted to keep talking though. She had a lot of clouds in her mind.

Fox was right, of course: clouds did depart from whatever fluffy shapes they took very quickly. It was bittersweet, Aria thought. But that was a reflection of life in general. Still staring at the clouds, she honed in on the other girl’s words. “I guess both are smart in their own ways,’’ she replied slowly. “Just like us all? You’re probably great at something I’m not and vice versa.” That was the way her dads had raised her: with understanding that no one was better than the other. Unless one was harming others on purpose.

Okaaay.

It seemed they were having a long talk about the House mascots then. “That’s easy. Because they see Hufflepuffs as weak. Apparently to have the Hufflepuff traits isn’t considered important.” Aria laughed. “Badgers are fierce! RAWR!” Ms. McLeod raised her arms in the air before herself and made her fingers into claws before lowering them. “Hey! We Slytherins like our snakey, hissy mascot! HISSSS!” Then she nodded, the sand crunching against her head and hair. “It is. I doubt a petition will be helpful in changing the mascots, anyway.”
