Default Potions Lesson 1 - The Pompion Potion

After the debacle last term with the vines invading every nook and cranny they could, Javier was a bit more diligent with the cleaning of his classroom - just to be safe. As usual, the potions classroom had everything where it was supposed to be - all jars were neatly aligned on their proper shelves, ingredients were labeled clearly, and all the desks were dusted and ready for use. Everything was perfectly normal.

Except for the fact that each desk ALSO had a ripe orange pumpkin placed upon them, waiting for the students as they arrived. Huh?!

Well, Halloween WAS over, and Javier had the perfect use for all these pumpkins that were still perfectly ripe and not yet rotted to the core. He wasn't about to let them go to waste!

Javier was waiting patiently at the front of the classroom, leaning against his desk with his arms crossed as he waited for them to file in. Come on in, take a seat and the lesson will begin shortly!

OOC: HELLO HELLO HELLO! Welcome to your potions lesson for the term! Remember that even though this is our first and only IC lesson we are actually PLAYING this term, this would NOT be the first lesson that Javier has hosted all term. They would already be familiar with him and well aware of his classroom rules - remember to brush up on those and the SSRPG rules prior to posting!

Class will move on in roughly 24ish hours.

CLASS PROGRESSION:
Question One: What uses could you have for turning your head into a pumpkin?
Question Two: What possible side effects may occur if brewed incorrectly?

Mini Activity - Harvesting Pumpkin Guts!
Main Activity - Brewing the Pompion Potion!

Alright, time to get started! Delilah gathered up all the disgusting pumpkin innards and measured out exactly two cups. She then poured the innards into her cauldron with a cup of water. She leaned down and eyed the burner, and then she turned the dial until the heat was set on medium. She eyed her cauldron, mainly to make sure nothing was about to blow up or anything crazy like that, and she turned her attention to the flitterby moths.

She put them in the mortar and began to grind them with the pestle. By the time they were a fine powder, her brew was at a good light simmer. She added the moths to the cauldron and began stirring. After four complete stirs, just like directions said, the potion was actually a nice, grass green color. "Uhh, Professor?" she asked, raising her hand. "What am I supposed to do to stun this bouncing bulb?" Help, please!

Mercer was back on solid footing now he could holster his wand and get back to mucking around with the pumpkin innards. And with making his potion the greatest pumpkin potion in the world. "I wish that this was a potion that turned all foods into pumpkin pie. Wouldn't that be the best? Or maybe it stays the same food but it tastes like pumpkin pie," Mercer confided to Milo as he tipped pumpkin guts into his cauldron, followed by water. He already knew how to turn on the heat, so he did that as well.

"It would be like... the greatest nutrition plan ever. Don't like vegetables? Make them taste like pie. Don't get enough iron... pie flavored liver and onions!" The little dried up moths were next, and Mercer held each of them up to the light to admire how the wings looked. Because they didn't look like that after he ground them up and tipped them into the cauldron.

"Ah, yes, good question!" Javier called out when he heard Delilah raising her hand. He walked over to her desk to assist her but raised his voice so the whole class could hear him.

"To stun your bouncing bulb, point your wand at the bulb and say STUPEFY. They're small and shouldn't be jumping around too much but if you need help, ask me or another one of the older students for assistance, I'd be happy to help," he explained. He waved his wand to make a quick adjustment to his instructions before continuing.

OOC: Hey all! You still have about 30ish hours to complete the mini and main activity!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

“Stupefy!’’ Aria, still very much happy, stunned the Bouncing Bulb. Now that there wasn’t a chance that it would cause any trouble since it was knocked out cold, the skin was removed. Once done, it was cut into very small pieces. Next came the weighing. One hundred grams of bouncing bulb was weighed out then added to the cauldron. Was there a specific time they needed to stir? Aria shrugged. She didn’t really care, it would be fun if something went wrong due to too much or too little stirring.

Once the pieces of bulb were mixed in properly, the waiting began. Aria began a carving of a dove on her pumpkin. There was no real meaning to this; a dove was just randomly chosen. The timer had been set so that she didn’t lose track of time. A good thing too because her attention had zoned in so well to the carving that she hadn’t realised the half an hour was up until the timer went off.

Aria abandoned the pumpkin for now to pluck away at the foxgloves petals and dropped them onto the scale until four grams were gathered. The mortar and pestle were cleaned again, the petals were crushed just a bit. With the juices flowing, the petals were then chopped. Into the cauldron they went before Aria quickly washed her hands before stirring, stirring and stirring.

Dark purple! FINALLY!

Looking at the last set of instructions, Aria knew that she had to keep her head on right. This part could easily be messed up.

Seed 1, anticlockwise stir.

Seed 2, anticlockwise stir.

Seed 3, anticlockwise stir.

Seed 4, anticlockwise stir.

Seed 5, anticlockwise stir.

Seed 6, anticlockwise stir.

Seed 7, anticlockwise stir.

Seed 8, anticlockwise stir.

Seed 9, anticlockwise stir.

Seed 10, anticlockwise stir.

With a huge smile of satisfaction, Ms. McLeod watched as her potion turned the required bright orange.

Milo didn't say much of anything right away. Fortunate, because a reply for Mr Hernandez which might easily have been labelled 'talking back' was just on the tip of his tongue. He just looked up and over in Mr Hernandez' direction while briefly stretching up to a full kneel on his seat, and then at Mercer's brother, because seeds. Something about seeds.

Separating the seeds. That was what they were doing. Hoisting up his murdered pumpkin again, Milo held it upside down over the tray. He shook its entrails out and scraped it empty, before picking out each and every one of the seeds and packing the remaining goop into two cups. "That potion would probably use similar ingredients. You could start inventing it now," he said to Mercer as he did this. Milo and structured education were not on the best of terms, though he found lessons to be good opportunities to experiment when he could do so unimpeded.

Speaking of which.

"What do you think will happen if I use the pumpkin as a cauldron?" he quietly asked Mercer, a sure sign he was about to try and discover the answer. It wouldn't be a perfect Pompion Potion, because of how the pumpkin would interact with the other ingredients and how it was technically an ingredient itself, but what would happen? Success in the activity didn't matter, because he much preferred to answer his own questions, especially as they already knew what the regular potion did.

Milo's main concern was that the pumpkin would catch fire before he could find out anything, but he headed that off by wiping the tray clean and setting it on the cauldron stand, and then the pumpkin on top of that. He fired up the burner below it just slightly above medium to compensate for the buffer; the heat would touch it, but the flame wouldn't. He returned the cups of seedless pumpkin entrails to the bashed up pumpkin cauldron, and added a cup of water too.

Glad to be getting on with things, Violet scooped up the two cups of pumpkin with a measuring cup. smashing the contents down with a wooden spoon to make sure it was really dense, and then dumped each in her cauldron. Next she added a cup of water and conjured a small flame, which she made bigger a little at a time until she was satisfied it had reached medium heat.

While her cauldron heated up, she ground her 3 flitterby moths in her pestle (possibly a little more viciously than necessary, but Violet like to be thorough). She added these to the cauldon when the contents reached a simmer and carefully stirred clockwise--one, two, three, four times! Looking down, Violet frowned to see that her potion was not turning grass green; it was more of a muddy dark green. Giving it a slow clockwise half a stir, she peered at it closely until--yes! Finally it turned the right color! It had just needed a bit of a stir more. Whew. Violet hated failing at a potion more than almost anything.

Now, for the bouncing bulb. She pinched one between her thumb and forefinger a lifted it up, inspecting it carefully, and then pushed it firmly down onto the table with her left thumb while using a small silver knife to peel and then chop it. Sure, she could Stupefy it--if necessary, the teacher had said. But Violet didn't think that would be necessary, because she had very successfully subdued it physically, except for a few feeble attempts to bounce. It just required determination, plus just a little touch of ruthlessness. And quite soon, this bulb wasn't going anywhere, except straight into Violet's potion (100 grams of it, at any rate).

There. Setting a timer for 30 minutes, Violet hit her hands together back and forth several times to knock off any lingering debris, and then sat back to wait. She looked at her pumpkin shell, for lack of anything better to do, but she was determined not to carve it and reveal her lack of artistic talent to the room yet again. Sitting. Waiting. Looking. Waiting. Oh, Merlin, this was intolerably boring!!

Grabbing her wand, Violet moved the pumpkin over toward her and began to slowly cut a curving snake into one side of it. Surely she could manage that much. Anything was better than boredom.

Delilah felt she probably should have known the answer to her question, but seeing as she was only a first year, she'd much rather ask than blow up the cauldron. She nodded toward the professor then reached for her wand and the bulb. She laid the bulb out before her and pointed her wand toward it. "Stupefy!" she called out. Oh. Okay, then. That had been easy enough. She stowed her wand back into her holster then starting peeling off the skin of the bulb. She pushed the skin to the side then started chopping the bulb. When it looked like she'd chopped enough, she measured out 100g of the bulb. She poured it into her cauldron and started stirring.

So now, she just sat and waited, apparently. Or...she could carve her pumpkin. Delilah decided to get a little artistic (and work on not making her Diffindo so squiggly). She decided to do basic, triangular-shaped eyes, mainly because she wasn't good enough with Diffindo to do much else. She pulled out her wand again and got to work. "Diffindo!" she said, then began carving the eyes.

They said to stun the bouncing bulbs, but Mercer was trying very hard just to hold his down and stab them with his knife until they approximated 'finely chopped'. It was hard to pay attention to Milo when the bulb kept snapping back and leaving bulby streaks on his face, but it was pretty obvious that whatever Milo was doing, it was 'creative'.

"Probably a bad idea, but all you can do is try it and see," Mercer weighed out his bulb bits and stirred them into the cauldron. That was good for now, and he could take time to practice that cutting spell on his pumpkin. Cut. Cut. Cut.

"What kind of face should I make? Assuming it will look like a face at all."

Delilah eyed her brew out of the corner of her eyes as she continued to carve her pumpkin. She was getting better at Diffindo, but only slightly. Her triangular-shaped eyes and nose looked pretty decent, but the mouth of her pumpkin made it look like it'd gotten into a muggle fist fight and came out on the worse end of the deal. True, it was supposed to be missing teeth, but her pumpkin also looked like it'd be punched in the jaw, too. Oh, well.

Pretty soon, the potion had been simmering for a full thirty minutes. Delilah cleaned up the mess from the carving and wiped off her hands. She starting plucking the petals of the foxgloves until she was able to weigh eight grams. She crushed the petals and watched the juices come out. You know, brewing potions was kind of satisfying in a weird sort of way, even if she was slaughtering the foxglove petals as she thought this.

She gave the petals a few rough chops then added them to the mixture. Delilah stirred and waited for the potion to turn a dark purple. You know what would really be bad? If, after all this work, the potion turned bright yellow or something. It didn't, though. It was a dark purple color, which meant she didn't have to start all over. She washed her hands, making sure to get off all remaining residue from the foxglove petals. Finally, she'd reached the last step! She added the pumpkin seeds one at a time and stirred anti-clockwise after each one. That last step took a hot minute to do, but finally, she was looking down at a bright orange potion.

DONE.

Once it was time to start brewing, Evan took a moment to carefully read over all the instructions prior to starting. It was easy to figure why they had spent the time sorting when he noted that pumpkin guts and seeds were both called for in separate capacities for the potions proper brewing. His cheeks nearly reddened when he realized they would not be using the pumpkin as a cauldron, which he had very much assumed. At least no one could read his thoughts and knew that's what he'd been considering.

So he quickly brushed it off, and reached for his measuring cups to begin packing in his two cups of pumpkin guts. He did this part slowly, triple checking to ensure he had not missed any seeds earlier whilst he was cleaning out the gourd. He put those into his cauldron, along with the cup of water so it could all begin to cook together over medium heat. With that done, he used a set of tweezers to pull out three flitterby moth wings and placed them into his pestle and mortar so he could begin to grind. With one eye still on his cauldron, he started that process.

The cauldron reached a simmer before the wings were a fine powder, but as he wasn't sure the best way to go about not over heating the ingredients already in, he made the executive decision to go ahead and add what he had. Dumping the contents into the potion, he began to stir clockwise counting as he did so. One. Two. Three. Four. The potion... did not look the right shade of green, so he opted to go for a fifth before deciding that now looked too dark.

Well... not enough time to do anything but press on. Thankfully Professor Hernandez had said trying the potion was optional.

Next was the bouncing bulb. Pulling out his wand, Evan cast a quick "Stupefy!" to cease it's movements. After done so, he began the process of peeling and chopping, trying to make quick but concise work of it. After a time, it looked cut well enough to him and he started the measuring. 100g measured, sorted and then added to the cauldron with a few more good stirs to ensure everything was mixed.

With that part done, he eyed the clock and set a timer for 30 minutes. He wasn't sure if he'd left himself enough time, but it was worth a shot. In an effort to move on faster, he decided to leave his pumpkin plain and worked on sorting out his 10 pumpkin seeds, and then moving on to plucking all the petals and weighing them out to the needed 4g. He wasn't sure if crushing them too soon would affect the potion, so for this part he decided to wait.

Time to just stare at the clock until his 30 minutes were up.

All at once, Milo was distracted by Mercer, who had said at least two things which - in Milo Land - did not tend to go together. He understood, really he did understand what Mercer was saying, but the words were twisting themselves free of their sentences and context and winding around and through each other until they were twisted into unrecognisable shapes and meanings.

Milo might have said something then, but words that were good enough for his thoughts were not forthcoming or perhaps just didn't exist at all. While his pumpkin simultaneously cooked and brewed over its flame, he knelt silently on his stool and watched what Mercer was doing, then stared at the pumpkin.

"Abstract," he said at last. "And accidental." Because the scariest and most interesting faces were the ones that had no business being there.

With his own potions all but forgotten - his interest in it had waned, but he couldn't completely forget it because his 'cauldron' had started giving off an unpleasant smell of burning pumpkin - Milo stayed half-turned to keep watching Mercer's progress instead. As he did so, he picked up his own store of dead flitterby moths and started intermittently poking through it; hesitantly, then absentmindedly, because dead moths told no tales.

Twenty minutes in to the simmering process, Violet had produced a slightly crooked but still quite recognizable snake on her pumpkin. Sighing, she put down the knife she'd been using; she supposed that was about the best she could do. Besides, it was time to be getting on with things.

Picking up a foxglove, she began to pluck the petals, one by one, dropping each one onto her scale. "He kind of likes me, he kind of likes me not..." she murmured to herself as she worked. When the scale measured 4 g., she placed them on her cutting board, took the edge of her potions knife, and began crushing the petals until the juices ran out of them, then chopped the whole pile of them up. Just then, her timer went off, and she swept the entire pile of petals off the board and into her cauldron. She stopped briefly to thoroughly wash her hands and by the time she was done, her potion had returned to a simmer, so she stirred it until it was a nice eggplanty-purple.

Ten pumpkin seeds, one at a time, ten counterclockwise stirs in between each one, and the potion turned a bright orange, right on schedule. There, done! Violet extinguished the flame under her cauldron and got out a couple of vials while she let it cool a bit. Then she carefully poured out a couple of doses of the potion, checking it carefully to make sure it was really the right color. Ha, orange potion, orange pumpkin. Cute.

Violet sat back, still looking at the vial she still held and trying to decide if she had the nerve to take it. On one hand, she HATED looking foolish, but on the other--oh well, then, she just couldn't resist finding out for sure that her potion really did work. She tossed it off in one gulp, then waited nervously to see what would happen.

Thankfully, Javier had been prepared if anyone got stuck with a pumpkin for a head before they left - he had numerous vials of antidote in his desk drawer. It didn't seem to be needed, apparently, which was fantastic and saved him quite the headache.

"Alright everyone, time is up!" he called out. Miss Blackthorne appeared to be the only one who took the potion, but luckily for her her head would be back to normal by the time she got to her next class. She'd be quite the sight in the hallways, though. "I'll roast up these pumpkin seeds for a snack for next class. In the meantime, read the section on the Pompion Potion in your textbook and answer the review questions at the end of the chapter for homework. Class dismissed!"
