Default Transfiguration Lesson 2: TBA

It’s a mild sunny Friday afternoon outside, but one wouldn’t know it by walking into the transfiguration classroom. In fact, it doesn’t look like a classroom at all! Upon entering the classroom, students are faced with a snowy mountain landscape. There are no fires or heating charms in the room, only a cold wind that periodically blows through the room, disturbing the snow. The only sign of life is the ever-present vines that snake across the walls and floor, a stark contrast to the illusion. Hopefully you’ve remembered the professor’s instructions to dress warmly. It’s quite cold in here!

Professor Carton stands near the door, bundled up in a hooded snowsuit, gloves, and a scarf covering most of his face. Only his aquamarine eyes are visible over the top of the scarf. “Come in, and stand in a semi-circle,” he greets the arriving students. “Mind the vines! You have my permission to sever them if they get too close for comfort.” In fact, please do! Less work for him that way.

OOC: Welcome to our second OOC transfiguration this term! We’ll begin in 24-30 HOURS CLASS HAS STARTED.

Lesson Progression
Q1: What is your first priority for survival when stranded in the wilderness?
Q2: How could transfiguration be helpful or unhelpful in obtaining shelter, water, fire, or food?

She had no idea why but she was eager to transfigure something into a patchwork quilt. It was the first item that came to mind when Carton explained the spell.

Having a good feeling about the rest of the activity, she snagged a few fabric squares then headed back to Ash. “Partners?’’ Since she liked working with the Ravenclaw and they had been doing so earlier, it made sense for her to ask. “Vestis Vellus. Vestis Vellus.” So that wasn’t the most difficult of incantations but the wand movement was and Claudine took some extra time practicing to get it right.

“Vestis Vellus.” Cue the curly q shape as Carton had demonstrated. Nothing. “Vestis Vellus,’’ the girl tried again, picturing a cotton patchwork quilt. The wad movement was done again as she focused on the image in her head. And there it was: one cotto patchwork quilt complete with a fluffy blue clouds design.

Did everyone hear that? CLAUDINE WAS ASKING TO BE PARTNERED UP WITH HER. They were the best siblings ever. The best. “Of course I’ll be your partner.” She grinned and retrieved a few pieces of fabric. “Vestis Vellus. Vestis Vellus. Vestis Vellus. And... yeah. There was a nice warm blue wool blanket, the exact same shade as her scarf. But not MADE of her scarf, because her scarf was too special to transfigure.

“Let’s go save some imaginary people! I bet I could make a fire if they needed it, maybe. But I still like making blankets better.” Or, well, she wanted to like it better.

“I think I see some people over there. It’s hard to tell though.”

Of course, of course.

Aside from Heath, Ash was the best Ravenclaw.

“Look at you. Nice work there.” Claudine, or anyone else, would have to be silly not to be in awe of Ash’s work. Silly Claudine was not. With their practice out of the way, she turned to look in the direction her partner was indicating. “Why don’t we go see then?” And she set off. “You know… if you really want to create the fire, you can. I mean, I’ll be right there. Carton’s around. So are a bunch of others. We’ll help out if something goes wrong.” The Snakette wanted Ash to regain her confidence about casting fires; here’s to hoping she came off as encouraging.

Sometimes, nothing would happen but most times his wand seemed to want to do its own thing. The wandmaker had already warned him about it but if he was given this wand it meant he was able to control it.

He wasn't oblivious to the heads turning his way and while he kept staring at the ground, focusing on the spell, his cheeks turned a light tint of pink. Or was this because of the cold? No one would ever find out.

Choosing to ignore everyone and not make eye contact, Daniel was about to try again when the voice of the professor caused him to stop his wand movement. "......I'm fine" he answered curtly before briefly looking up at him. Without another word, the Hufflepuff waved his wand again. He focused on his intent to conjure a pile of firewood, visualized it appearing before him on the ground and waved his wand in an X shape. "Focalia"

Another piece of firewood appeared, falling on top of the other one. He wished he could make more than one at a time. "Focalia!" he said again, a little firmer now and watched as a few wood blocks appeared. This had to be sufficient enough.

Daniel turned back around after setting the pile of wood on fire to listen to the Professor again as he continued the class. His dark brown eyes watched as the man performed a new spell and transfigured his scarf into a blanket. As the fiery red letters appeared midair, Daniel stooped down to open his bag and took his pen and notebook and began to copy what was written before snapping it back shut and dropping the notebook back in his bag.

Considering his explosion earlier, Daniel thought it was best to practice the new spell before going out to rescue the illusions of people. He walked up to the box at the Professor's feet just as a piece of fabric flew past him. The Hufflepuff looked back to see it flying towards Noah and he felt jealous all of the sudden because accio was a spell he did not have under control yet. He looked inside the box and grabbed the first fabric that he saw. A dull grey fabric.

Walking back to his small pile of firewood, Daniel held the piece of fabric in front of him and moved his wand in the shape of a curly q "Vestis Vellus" he said. Nothing changed so he tried again. "Vestis Vellus" again, nothing. "Vestis Vellus" this time the piece of fabric began to change into a woollen blanket but stopped halfway so now he was holding half and half in his hand. The second-year sighed in frustration before reverting the spell (he was good at this one seeing as he spend the majority of the year practising spells) to its original state.

After another few attempts, he had finally managed to transfigure the fabric completely into a blanket wrapped it around himself. Pocketing his wand back in his wrist holster, Daniel left the area without a word in search for the 'illusioned people'

Up ahead you'll notice a cave. A group of stranded hikers are huddled in a circle near the opening, wrapped in blankets and sleeping bags. A pile of discarded food wrappers sits in the middle of the circle. The group leader attempts to ignite the wrappers by rubbing a pair of sticks together; nothing happens. As the leader tries again, the hikers begin to complain loudly. Looks like they could use some help!

He generally liked to have a go at the pronounciation and wand movements, separate prior to first cast, just to prevent any initial hiccups. So once instructions were given out, he took a moment before collecting his fabric squares - moving his wand in the curly q motion. Once that started to feel second nature, he muttered the incantation a bit under his breath - "Vestis Vellus!”

After a bit 5 minutes of switching between those two practice activities, he opted to head towards the front and grab a handful of the fabric squares - putting a couple in his pocket while he focused on one for his first attempt. He pictured a black and red checkered wool blanket and put all his might into thinking on that, before raising his wand into the curly q and speaking, "Vestis Vellus!” The first go on this one he was rather proud of. It could have offered to be thicker, but there were no holes and it did seem the normal shape of a blanket.

So calling that a win.

From there, the Ravenclaw decided to jump right into the activity. He considered briefly trying to partner up - but there'd been so many partner activities as of late he opted to try going it alone this time around. If someone chose to approach him, he wouldn't turn them away - he just did not feel it necessary to seek out a partner. But it was necessary to seek out the illusions, so Evan moved along to explore the scape of the not so classroom classroom. He bundled his outer wear a little tighter as he did so, before spotting a small group of what appeared to be people ahead.

Classmates or one of the parties to be rescued? That was the question.

The path ahead is interrupted by an icy mountain stream cutting across it. The stream is completely frozen over except for a large break in the ice downstream. Screams ring out, and if you look in that direction, you'll see two people thrashing about in the water. They struggle but eventually manage to free themselves from the stream. Both wet and shivering, they stagger onto an embankment, and the man puts a protective arm around the woman, who is already beginning to show signs of hypothermia.

Orange being her favourite colour, obviously. "Vestis Vellus!" She casted the spell along with the curly q wand movement - and there it was!! WOW. She picked the bright orange blanket up for a moment, looking rather pleased. Moving on to the activity now -

Setting it back down, she roamed around the classroom slowly, hoping to encounter the illusions soon. This was actually a fun activity!! A lot more fun than she had expected, anyway.

The orange glow of a campfire burns in the distance. As you approach, you'll find a family of five sitting on logs around the fire: mother, father, brother, sister, and baby. The mother holds the baby while the father stokes the fire. Although the fire burns brightly, the two older children huddle together, shivering. The baby begins to wail, and even the mother stifles a shiver. It seems that the fire isn't enough!

Norman's aquamarine eyes scanned the area, watching the students disperse. He saw Yoon, Nam, and Nichols head out. Blaze and Fox weren't far behind either, and it appeared that Blackthorne and Mordaunt might pair up. It was then that he noticed Blackthorne's hand in the air. "No, you don't have to use a cloth object to transfigure a blanket," he replied with a slight shake of his head. "Generally, the closer an object is to its final form, the easier it is to transform, so cloth is easier but you can use that spell on anything."

OOC: Sorry for the shortness & weird formatting... had to do this post from my phone! You still have ABOUT 36 HOURS for this activity.

"Noah? Do you want to form a group?" she asked. "That is, if you're not too comfortable here to complete the assignment," she added, because Slytherins just couldn't resist being a bit snarky when given the chance.
Noah had been hoping the illusioned people would come and seek him instead of the other way around, since he'd already made himself oh so comfy from his little warm bubble. He was too keen on the idea that he thought Violet was the illusion, but yes, he knew her by now to think she's a stranger. Looking up from his spot, Noah shrugged nonchalantly, "I don't mind," might as well get on with the activity than freeze to death waiting for the mission to come to him. Standing up with his wool blanket still around him, Noah stood beside Violet and looked at the other side of the room opposite where the others headed out. "Shall we?" Noah, keen as ever to move and finish the mission, began to walk towards uncharted territory...minding the stupid vines.

Misa was mildly excited about this one. It had it's uses. Plus... blankets were just the coolest! She loved blankets.

The activity... she could do without. She'd much rather stay where it was warm and cuddle up under a newly transfigured blanket by a fire and call it a day.

But alas. School. Ruining the practical fun.

So she once again adjusted her coat before grabbing some spare fabric pieces and set off.

The screams were the first thing that got Evan's attention as he'd been hunting, and before he'd really processed his gait had quickened in the direction. Seeing the wet family, it was hard to not immediately want to go through all of the healing spells he could think of for their sake. But then he remembered they weren't real and the assignment was to evaluate how to assist with the issue of cold. And based on conditions of having fallen into the river in these freezing temperatures - blankets and fire would be needed for this.

But... blankets or fire first?

Blankets would offer more immediate pause to the decrease in temperature while the fire could take a minute to warm someone up. So blankets first it was.

Pulling the scraps of fabric from his pocket, he laid them out quickly before making his curly q over each one and the incantation, "Vestis Vellus". His focus was just on creating something that would be warm, so they ended up just as single colored wool blankets as opposed to any pattern like the one he'd focused on earlier. Again, they held no holes though so they would do the job sufficiently. He handed each one out to each family before trying to turn his attention to the fire.

Hopefully that was enough to begin with while he focused on conjuring up the wood so his incendio could last.

"Thank you, Sir." Darius said at the compliment. It wasn't easy doing wordless magic. He still felt like a beginner on each attempt with a spell, but that just made him more determined to master it.

Darius smirked a little at the new set of instructions, since he had already come to class with a blanket draped over his shoulders. It wasn't a large blanket though, so skipping this section wouldn't have been advised. Instead, he went to collect the fabric squares and worked on creating some blankets. His siblings would probably love another blanket if he was able to make them easily.

"Vestis Vellus," Darius first muttered with the curly-Q shape as practice. It felt poetic and his wrists seem to form the shape like natural. As before, he would whisper it and then alternate with it wordlessly. On the fifth whisper is when the fabric transformed into a blanket. Cool.. now the next part. Taking a couple more attempts on the other squares in his possession (just in case for others) he walked around the cold, holding his blanket close to see if others needed some help.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

The sounds of complaints could be heard up ahead and Daniel knew that he had found a group in need of help. He hastened his steps, not because he was enthusiastic to help out but because he was feeling cold himself and as he advanced the trees near the cave, he noticed a group of hikers seated in front of it, wrapped in blankets and sleeping bags.

His dark brown eyes looked at the discarded food wrappers and then at the, who he supposed was their leader, trying to ignite them to no avail. Daniel didn't need to assess the situation because it was obvious what they needed. Wood and fire.

Daniel stepped away from the trees and joined their space. He stopped in front of the pathetic pile of food wrappers. Had they been real people, Daniel would have made a deal with them. If they gave him some of their food, he would make sure they got their fire going. However, these people were not real. Their appearance was just a conjured trick by the professor, which meant that the food was fake too and would probably vanish the moment class was over.

The urge to roll his eyes was there, but he refrained from doing so and without considering whether these people were supposed to be 'muggles' or not, Daniel pointed his wand at the ground in front of 'leader' and moved it in an X shaped pattern. "Focalia" he said, focusing on the spell with all of his might because he did not want to be here longer than necessary.

These people were irritating him already, as he didn't believe they were in any real need of help if they just stopped whining and had helped the 'leader' out earlier. Fortunately, his practice earlier had paid off and a small pile of firewood appeared on the ground on the first try. The incendio charm was one he was confident in using, as he had to use it frequently in potions classes to ignite the fire under the cauldron. So, with an almost lazy wave of his wand, he muttered the spell and lit the pile of wood on fire.

Could he leave now?

As the fire appears, the hikers’ complaints turn to cheers of delight. They huddle around the campfire, rubbing their hands together for warmth. One of them pulls a bag of marshmallows out of his pack. Another finds a chocolate bar, and someone else has graham crackers. As the hikers gather around for s’mores, your work here is done. Yes, you may leave. There are other people out there who need your help!

OOC: Sorry for the shortness & weird formatting... had to do this post from my phone! You still have ABOUT 36 HOURS for this activity.

Valentina frowned as she slowly approached the orange light - suddenly wondering if there were wild animals roaming around before realizing that none of this was actually happening. UGH. Why did she keep forgetting that? Maybe because everything looked so REAL, it did get confusing.

... She got close enough to see a family sitting by a campfire, shivering. The baby too!! She pulled out the pieces of fabric from her pocket and set them on the ground, casting a Vestis Vellus on each one with the curly q wand movement. There were five blankets now.. and they seemed fine so she handed one to each of them. The fire seemed warm enough though... hm.

The crunch of the snow below being the audible thing Darius could hear as his class's voices slowly disappeared. A cave... Darius thought, thinking a little break could be in order from this cold as he hugged his blanket a little tighter. It was warm enough, but he wanted to just sit again. He stopped just short of the cave when he saw a group of stranded hikers huddled together.

Sheesh, this is beyond sad.. Darius thought. Pitying them for not even having a fire to warm up. Wanting to keep out of sight since they had to be muggles, he aimed his wand under his blanket in the direction of the hikers in the middle while they were turned away from him to notice. Focalia.. Concentrating with all his might to say inside his head with the proper wand movement. Wordlessly, the firewood appeared. He blinked in surprise at how easily that came about this time. Immediately following up with an Incendio.. Boom. There's the fire. That ought to comfort them as he awaited their reaction.

Ash’s group that she had spotted was actually in a cave. Claudine soon forgot, as she trekked over to it, that they were indeed in a classroom as opposed to the real outdoors. Quite the wonders magic worked, didn’t it? Anyway. There was no need for the duo to venture far into the cave. The three campers were literally right there.

“Let’s see. They’ve got blankets and sleeping bags,’’ the Snakette mused as she surveyed the scene. “Clearly they need a fire.” Whittling those sticks together clearly had done nothing. And complaining? Well, that wouldn’t help either. “I’ll encourage you again, Ash, to give the fire a shot. But I won’t force you, just let me know if you’re up for the challenge."

Claudine ended up feeling very pleased to see Ashley deciding to get all the things done. She looked on, impressed at the other girl’s skills. Soon enough, there was a perfect fire to warm the place. “Look at you. And you thought you’d have blown the place up.” Grinning, she patted Ash on the shoulder. “Let’s go find the next group of unhappy campers.”

Having roused Noah from his cozy spot by his fire, Violet had started down a likely path, moving at a moderate rate, her eyes moving from side to side looking for their first test. Suddenly she heard screams in the distance and started to move faster, calling over her shoulder to Noah. "Noah, look! Those people fell into the stream and need help! Hurry!"

Arriving on the scene, Violet was taken aback by the people's suffering. If the teacher hadn't assured them all that these were illusions, she would have sworn they were real. As it was, they still seemed too real for comfort. "It's going to be all right, help is coming," Violet reassured them, casting a drying charm on them both as a first measure and hoping Noah would catch up to help her. If he didn't arrive soon, she figured that, much as she liked fire-making, conjuring some blankets would be the next step.

Evan was so relieved to see the thankful smiles and that the blankets at least helped in the immediate. And with that task completed, he was ready to move on to the next and get them a fire going. Again, crisis helped him better focus, as he made the x with his wand and stated a firm "Focalia!" Twigs were what were produced again, but that was fine with him as that was what he'd meant to conjure in order to use as kindling. Another x and another "Focalia! Focalia!" And now there sat two different logs, which he quickly stacked on the kindling.

With all of that put together, Evan once again pointed his wand at the stack. "Incendio!" Hopefully this was now enough for the family.

Five blankets for five grateful family members. The mother wraps the smallest blanket around the baby before taking another, larger one for herself. FInally snug and warm, the baby stops crying. Meanwhile, the father assists the other two children with their blankets. He looks back at the family’s mystery savior with a nod of thanks, and the mother smile gratefully. All is well.

The hikers watch in awe as wood and then fire appear. It’s impossible to say which is louder: the roar of the fire or the roar of applause from the hikers. As the no longer freezing hikers gather around the fire, one of them pulls out a guitar and begins to play a campfire song. Best get going, unless you fancy a solo!

No, definitely not the way to start a fire! Luckily, the hapless hikers have the two girls to help them! The hikers are so busy complaining that it takes them a moment to notice the fire. As they do, their complaints turn to cheers. They huddle close around the fire, and their leader starts to tell a ghost story. It looks like your work here is done!

The man blinks, seemingly reassured by the girl’s words, while the woman can only shiver. The pair huddle close, staring at their mystery savior in bewilderment as the drying charm takes effect. It’s a start, but they aren’t out of the woods yet. No longer wet but still shivering, the woman looks at the girl with pleading eyes. Please help!

Bundled up in their blankets, the couple looks on as wood and then fire appears. They move closer to the fire, huddling close together. While the woman rubs her hands together over the fire for warmth, the man looks back at their mystery helper with an appreciative nod. The imminent danger has passed.

Norman glanced at his watch and seeing that the lesson had come to an end, he unwrapped the scarf from his face so he could be heard throughout the classroom. “Alright, TIME IS UP!” With a wave of his wand, all of the illusions vanished, including the cold, snowy mountain. As the classroom’s appearance returned to normal, so did its temperature. “Great work, everyone!” He addressed the class once more, lowering his hood to look out at his students. “Your homework: write a 500 word essay on ways that transfiguration can be used in a survival situation, due Monday. Class dismissed!”

OOC: Thanks for coming! I’ll leave the thread open for a few hours more, in case anyone wants to rp their character reacting to the final set of prompts and/or leaving.
