Default Transfiguration Lesson 2: TBA

It’s a mild sunny Friday afternoon outside, but one wouldn’t know it by walking into the transfiguration classroom. In fact, it doesn’t look like a classroom at all! Upon entering the classroom, students are faced with a snowy mountain landscape. There are no fires or heating charms in the room, only a cold wind that periodically blows through the room, disturbing the snow. The only sign of life is the ever-present vines that snake across the walls and floor, a stark contrast to the illusion. Hopefully you’ve remembered the professor’s instructions to dress warmly. It’s quite cold in here!

Professor Carton stands near the door, bundled up in a hooded snowsuit, gloves, and a scarf covering most of his face. Only his aquamarine eyes are visible over the top of the scarf. “Come in, and stand in a semi-circle,” he greets the arriving students. “Mind the vines! You have my permission to sever them if they get too close for comfort.” In fact, please do! Less work for him that way.

OOC: Welcome to our second OOC transfiguration this term! We’ll begin in 24-30 HOURS CLASS HAS STARTED.

Lesson Progression
Q1: What is your first priority for survival when stranded in the wilderness?
Q2: How could transfiguration be helpful or unhelpful in obtaining shelter, water, fire, or food?

How did Transfiguration help in this scenario? Having already offered an option with his comment regarding shelter, Evan was feeling a little lost for anything else. The only other thing that came to mind was for fire, and incendio. But that was a charm, which then didn't really help the whole Transfiguration question. Although... Why was incendio a charm when it conjured fire? He'd save that question for another day.

Everyone was in fact correct about Gamp's law. But honestly... Lisa's answer also put him on another train of thought. Being an animagus would be helpful, because in addition to hunting for food there also would be a fur coat for warmth and more ease of protecting oneself. But really the part that he'd been hung up on was the hunting.

Something he loathed, really. But when it came to survival... Evan raised his hand. "while food itself cannot be conjured, there is the arrow shooting spell which could be used for the purpose of hunting your own."

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash thought that charms would be the most helpful while camping. However, she had a few ideas on this topic as well.

“If you conjure animals, or if you transfigure something into one, can you eat it? Or will it turn back into its regular form or vanish?”

And if you COULDN’T do that, then why were there spells to turn things into animals? That just seemed weird.

And food--Violet knew a person could go a lot longer without food than without water or shelter, so she didn't really see that as a priority, unless you were going to be lost for a long time.

So, was it possible for magic to be unhelpful? Aside from being less equipped academically, there's a natural law that limits the use of magic. "Transfiguration is a very useful and important branch of magic, but not everything can be conjured out of thin air, Professor." Noah said, raising his hand again, and then pointing at the list he made. "While food is needed for survival, magic cannot be used to conjure sustenance out of thin air. It has to be sourced some place else, according to Gamp's Law. Now, this could be a problem, especially if we are stuck in a hostile environment like this one." Noah has had a lot of experience using the Room of Requirement over the years, and he'd learned that he was required to bring his own food inside if he wanted to use it for a longer period of time. Well, at least, water can be conjured, so they really aren't that doomed.

Norman knew it was only a matter of time before someone mentioned Gamp’s Law as an example of transfiguration being unhelpful. What he hadn’t expected was for that answer to come up right off the bat, not for it to be so eloquently worded. He nodded approvingly. “Nicely put, Mr. Mordaunt,” he said. “You can use magic to summon food from somewhere. You can use magic to cook food you already have, but you can’t use magic to conjure food or transform something into food.”

It was interesting just how many aspects were necessary for one’s survival in the wilderness. She wondered which of them would be the focus of today’s lesson. She made her notes then looked towards Carton once more as he moved things along.

Noah was right about one component of Gamp’s law, of course. The Snakette’s eyes remained on the fiery words, trying to figure out something useful. She was still thinking of fire, yes. And suddenly she had an answer. Up went a hand. Focalia conjures firewood,’’ Claudine volunteered when she was called upon. “That’s one way Transfiguration can help out. After you have the firewood, a fire can be lit.” Hopefully easily so.

Norman positively beamed at Blaze’s answer… not that anyone could tell with the scarf wrapped around his face. “Yes, it does exactly that. Excellent, Miss Blaze,” he replied with a quick knowing look. But he’d come back to that in a minute.

"Professor, aguamenti can be used to conjure water." Because drinking water is a necessity, yes??

Here was another answer that Norman had expected to come up at some point. “While Aguamenti is technically classified as a charm instead of transfiguration, that’s an important point you raised, Miss Nichols,” he said. “If you have your wand and you know the aguamenti spell, you have water. That’ll save you the trouble of searching for it in the wild.” That last bit was added for the entire class’s benefit.

She began skimming through the textbook as quickly as she could before pausing. The Professor’s words and red words caught her attention and she refocused on the task at hand.

Water, shelter, fire/warmth, and food….

Noah had a very logical point. Claudine ‘s point was new causing her to write down the incantation. She’d have to ask HER BROTHER Noah to help her with that. He was of age. Wait… Now that he was at Uni would he be going to the family camping trips??? if not, she’d ask Noah Mordaunt to go. She had to have a Noah for a Noah. Valentina was super pretty y’know? And Augmenti made sense…. She wondered how the thing with Evan went… She had heard rumors but hadn’t seen or heard anything confirming something….

OH OH! PROFESSAAAUR!” Excited wiggly wave of her hand. “BEING AN ANIMAGUS WOULD BE SOOOOOO HELPFUL! I’d recommend being a wolf then you can hunt for food and explore and stay warm!

Norman had to stifle a laugh at Nam’s wiggly wave and general enthusiasm. For once, he was glad for the scarf in front of his face that hid his expression. He couldn’t have his students thinking he was going soft! The girl wasn’t wrong. Being an animagus could be helpful; he knew firsthand. He wondered if Nam would settle for a dog animagus instead of a wolf. The thought crossed his mind to test that theory, but he didn’t want to distract her or the rest of the class by transforming into his animagus form. “Yes, I imagine it would,” he said with a slight glint in his eye. “Very good, Miss Nam.”

Frankly, Norman was a tad surprised that no one had mentioned using transfiguration for shelter sooner, barring Nam’s idea from the last question. Couture’s answer earned a slight approving nod, though he wished she’d elaborated a bit more. “Good, Miss Couture,” he said. “Do you have any specific ideas how that might be accomplished?”

Technically Nam had already answered this question with his answer to the last one, so Norman wouldn’t have been surprised if the boy had decided to sit this one out. He was pleased that not only had that not happened, but Nam’s answer was one that he himself wouldn’t have immediately thought of. “A creative use of transfiguration for survival indeed! Excellent, Mr. Nam,” he replied.

Here was another outside the box answer! Maybe not the most well-executed idea, but Norman had to give Fox credit for her ingenuity. “Good question, Miss Fox! Theoretically yes, though I don’t recommend doing so,” he replied. “While conjured or transfigured creatures won’t revert or vanish unless the caster wills it or the spellwork is faulty, they aren’t true creatures. They lack any real nutritional value.” Still it was a good idea.

At first, Norman thought Blackthorne’s answer would expand on Couture’s, but he was pleased when it went in a somewhat different direction. “Sound reasoning, Miss Blackthorne,” he said with an approving nod.

Seeing no more hands in the air, Norman took that as a sign that it was time to move on. “Great answers!” he addressed the class. “As you can see, transfiguration can be used to obtain all of the items on this list. While Gamp’s Law states that food cannot be produced out of thin air, you can use transfiguration as a means to hunt your own food, as Mr. Nam suggested.” He paused for a brief moment before continuing, “Today we won’t be in this environment long enough to require shelter, water, or food -” After all, it would be dinnertime in a couple of hours! “- so we’ll be focusing on…” With a wave of his wand, the fiery list in midair all but disappeared, leaving only one item: Fire/warmth.

“Today we’ll be covering two ways of creating and preserving warmth, the first of which is the spell Miss Blaze mentioned,” he went on. “Focalia is a spell that conjures firewood, which can be used in tandem with either a fire conjuring charm or non-magical means of starting a fire. To cast, visualize the type and size of wood you want. Concentrate on that vision; make an X motion with your wand, and say the incantation Focalia." He waved his wand to clear the remaining fiery letters, and soon new information appeared in their place midair:

Norman demonstrated the spell by brandishing his wand and drawing an X shape. “Focalia,” he said clearly and firmly. In an instant, a small, neat pile of firewood materialized at his feet. “Ideally, you’ll want different sizes of wood in your pile - smaller sticks, or kindling, to build the foundation of the fire and larger wood pieces for long burning fuel - but for now, let’s focus on conjuring any firewood.” Baby steps, kids!

“For the next several minutes, your task is to build your own campfire.” See, there was a reason for the lack of heating charms in the room! “Practice conjuring firewood with Focalia, and when you have a pile about yea big-” He gestured toward the pile of firewood at his feet. “- go ahead and start your fire. You can use incendio or if you’re not confident using that spell, I have matches up here that you can use.” He pulled a small matchbook from his pocket and held it up as an example. “You may work by yourself or with a partner if you prefer. You have fifteen minutes starting… NOW!”

OOC: Thank you for sticking with me so far and sorry for the delay! RL is not cooperating this week. For this activity, your character needs to practice conjuring firewood using the spell Focalia and use that wood to start a campfire. Partner/group work is allowed, but each person must attempt the spell. Spell attempts do not have to be successful to receive credit. If there are any questions, feel free to PM me for OOC questions and/or indicate in the title of your post for IC questions. You’ll have 48-60 HOURS for this activity!

Default Partners?
Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Why did people transfigure things into animals and back? It seemed so mean and-

They were doing WHAT?

Yeah, Ash was going to need a partner for this, mostly for supervision. Because ummmmm... yeah. Ash and fire had never ended well.

Any older students want to be my partner so that I can’t accidentally set more things on fire?” Was she joking? Kind of?

Not really.

She began to practice the wand movement for Focalia.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Still shivering from the chill, the young Hufflepuff pulled his beanie down lower to cover more of his forehead. A movement beside him made him turn his gaze towards Evan who nodded at him as a sign of hello and he nodded back too.

Claudine's presence was...less welcomed at the moment. He wasn't sure whether he liked her or not. Sure, he was grateful that she took time out of her schedule to tutor him but it was moments like these that he was bothered by her. Ugh. He had only made a simple suggestion, one that even the Professor had noted without complaint. There were many words that he wanted to say to her but in the end, he didn't think it was worth it and he only shot the older girl a glare and he was excellent at those before he pointedly turned his back at her and concentrated on the lesson as it started.

Throughout the lesson, Daniel had been quiet. It was not that he didn't know the answers but he didn't see the point in reiterating what the others had already mentioned. When the time came to practice conjuring up firewood, Daniel watched the professor carefully as he demonstrated the spell. The wand movement was simple enough, one that he did not need to practice.

Without a word, Daniel left the group to stand further away. He didn't want to work with anyone if they had the option not to. He took his spruce wand out of his wrist holster and pointed it at the ground in front of him before swiftly moving it in an X shape pattern. "Foca--!"

-BANG-

True to its type, the wand seemed to get a mind on its own and before he had even finished the sentence a small explosion happened. The boy coughed at the smoke and waved his hand to be able to see again and when he looked back at the ground he saw....

A single broken piece of wood.

!!!!!!THERE WAS WOOD!

Violet caught the interaction between Daniel and Claudine and smiled to herself at the younger student's reaction. Of course, Slytherins could be a little sharp-tongued, but among themselves, they were used to it; members of other Houses, however, could sometimes get offended. But really, she couldn't help sympathize with him. She liked Claudine, considered her a friend, but she had to admit the (not much!) older girl could be a little bossy at times. Violet felt the older girl still treated her like a much younger student at times, but was afraid to show her annoyance because she was so desparate to keep the few friends she had.

Violet looked over at another friend and considered joining her for a moment. Certainly Violet was very good at fire charms now, resulting from the same experience she shared with Ashley, being possessed by a ghost. But unlike Ash, Violet felt empowered and even elated by her new skills--maybe a little too empowered. To be honest, Violet worried at times that she enjoyed conjuring fires a little too much now. Maybe she and Ash shouldn't work together on this particular assignment after all.

Violet moved over and decided to work alone for now. If someone wanted to join her, that was fine, too. Raising her wand, she tested the new spell a few times: "Focalia!" After one shaky start (winding up with a spindly and crooked stick-thing), she was pleased to see that she could successfully create some decent looking firewood from the X-shaped movements of her wand. This would be useful!--certainly better than looking for random things to set on fire.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Claudine squinted a bit at Carton. He had given her a look but what did it mean? Not that she thought much about it. There were classmates to listen to for she might learn a thing or two from them. And she did, of course.

In the end, it turned out that they’d be focusing on warmth. Huh. Strange that Claudine had the instinct to stick with fire when answering the questions. Even stranger that she had actually named the spell they’d be using. Oh. That explained Carton’s look earlier. Still, the fact that she’d hit the nail on the head made her beam. All of her irritation at Daniel had evaporated there and then.

“Focalia. Focalia. Focalia,’’ the seventh year muttered under her breath, still feeling good about having spoken up of the spell. The incantation seemed to roll right off of her tongue and after making some X-like movements, prepared to get to the actual thing.

But at that moment…

“Hey, Ash. I can help you out if you want.” Claudine waited to see if the Ravenclaw would take up her offer.

Nodding his head along, Noah stepped back from the rest of the group to find himself a good patch of ground to work on. Everyone seemed to be working on their own, well, except for Ash now rescued by Claudine, and he did want to work on his own for now.

The spell was pretty straightforward, even the wand movement was simple, so this should be an easy-peasy task for the sixth year. After clearing a patch of snow, and flattened it for good measure, Noah procured his wand from his arm holster, and pointed it at the ground, non-verbally speaking the incantation in his mind loud and clear, drawing the X-pattern along, "Focalia." Out of thin air, a decent-sized log of firewood appeared in thin air, dropping onto the ground with a dull thud. Without wasting any second, he produced a few more using the spell, and then doubled the amount by multiplying it with a doubling charm. As soon as he got a decent mound of firewood, at his feet, he went on to set it on fire non-verbally as well. "Incendio." Slowly engulfed by the fire, Noah's mound of firewood began to glow and produce the promised heat. He sat by his fire, and warmed his hands as he waited for the next activity.

focalia, focalia, focalia, focalia... focalia...Ash had maybe created, ummmm, a bit too much firewood probably yeah. So she vanished some of it. After all, she didn’t wanna create a massive bonfire. “Yes please, Claudine. You can cast the incendio.” Hey, wait, Ash wanted to cast that! ...which was why Claudine should do it instead.

Sigh. Being responsible was so disappointing.

Darius after hearing the next question considered the source of beverage. Well, if it was always freezing the ice could be melted and boiled into drinking water with Incendio, right? He thought before they were moving onto the start of the activity. Firewood.

Seeing most people everyone pair up or drift away, Darius did the same moving into his own little section. Forming an X-shape with his wand, he muttered over and over.. Focalia... Focalia.. Focalia... Changing from audible mutterings to wordless attempts. He wasn't an expert, so it took the audible magic for the firewood to finally summon. Just as he heard some sort of boom from a younger kid across the field. Huh... least he's not harmed.

Darius then found some pebbles and small rocks to kick around the wood circumference. "Incendio," This time the wordless attempt worked, as the fire roared over some of the firewood. He sighed, feeling the warmth reach him from the fire.

Sigh. Being responsible was so disappointing.

Claudine moved over to stand beside Ash. Was it just her or did she detect some sort of internal battle from the Ravenclaw? She only picked up on it because Ash looked unsure of something. “You okay?” Then the Snakette was looking at the firewood Ash had conjured up. “Good start. You seem like a natural with this spell.” Which reminded her that she needed to conjure her own firewood.

Here went nothing.

First, a reasonable sized pile like Carton’s was pictured in her mind. It included the bigger pieces as well as smaller. “Focalia,” the Snakette said quietly and making the X movement. Now, Conjuration spells were always the most difficult type of Transfiguration spells for her to master so it came as no surprise that she happened to be firewood-less at the moment. She hoped Ash would be patient as she repeated the incantation and wand movement. One, two, three, four times Claudine tried until finally the pile that she pictured appeared beside Ash’s.

Great. Now they could move on.

Claudine eyed Ash. “You sure you don’t want to try the matches?”

ASH DEFINITELY WANTED TO TRY THE MATCHES.
She was not going to try the matches.
But she wanted to.

"No, you can do the firestarting."- Ash, looking like she really wanted to do the firestarting. It was so fun. Nevermind that she had an... interesting past with fire, that wasn't her fault.

"You're more responsible anyway."

And less good at firestarting??? Ash was better, she should... NOT be doing the firestarting. No. Nope. Removing the temptation.
Normal firestarting ----> bigger firestarting ----> arson, or at least that was what Ash was worried about.

Ash stuck her hands in her pockets. "I'll just stand over here, y'know, spotting you, making sure you don't burn a forest down... haha..."

You know what was fun? NOT firestarting. She was good. She was fine! She didn't even like fire, yeah.

"I know how to make the fire bigger though, if we need to do that later."

10/10 responsible.

Once they were released to start working on the assignment, Evan hadn't even had a chance to start yet before the loud BANG caught his attention and his head swiveled to find out where it was coming from. His eyes landed on the smoke, and he noticed Daniel standing near it but... there was also firewood, so apparently whatever had happened had still been deemed semi-successful, so he wasn't going to worry about it.

Besides, if it was a problem he was sure Professor Carton would take care of it.

Focusing on his pile of hopefully soon to be wood, he immediately got hung up on the type of wood. He'd never bothered asking his Appa what type they usually used... though.. he certainly supposed he could imagine what it looked like. Trying to conjure up the image in his mind, he focused long and hard before lifting his wand. "Focalia!"

It produced wood! Which excited the Ravenclaw, until he stepped towards it to pick it up and put off to the side and noticed... driftwood. He'd conjured driftwood. Which was essentially useless for fire making.

Back to the drawing bored, he kicked the first attempt gently off to the side with a small frown, before once again focusing and trying to find a different image. Once in his mind, he focused and lifted his wand again, "Focalia!" And this time, what was produced was mere twigs. Which... he supposed still somewhat fit the assignment and he would need some of those. Putting them at the start of the pile, he readied himself to try again.

SUMMER FOREVER

Valentina carefully listened to what the professor said. Focalia. Well, all she needed to do was to conjure up some firewood - which seemed easy enough. Kind of. Just as she was about to start, she heard a bang which startled her. But it didn't seem like anything serious so she focused on the task at hand.

She muttered the spell softly a few times before practicing the wand movement as well. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, she casted the incantation. "Focalia!" ... and nothing. Oooops. She tried again and this time, she had produced firewood!!! She repeated the spell enough times until there was a small pile of wood.. should be enough, right?? She arranged the wood neatly before pointing her wand at it. "Incendio!"

Claudine narrowed her eyes at Ash. There was something up with the Ravenclaw, and she was trying to figure it out. Then Ash mentioned the reason which made Claudine remember a particular episode a few terms ago. “Oh. I got it.” And you know what? The Snakette actually laughed softly at the mention of making a bigger fire. “I’ll be sure to let you know if we need that. But don’t you think that you’ve learnt from that forest mistake? Confidence in yourself is important.”

However, the older girl was not about to force your friend to do something she didn’t want to. “Incendio.’’ With the appropriate wand movement, the wood was lit. The flames danced and Claudine looked pleased with herself.

Now a dog animagus would be awesome. Now how could she learn to do that. When she was complimented on her answer, she squared her shoulders and lifted her chin a little higher. See? See? Her imagination let her come up with some FUN ideas! Heh… now just how could she become an animagus? She’d have to ask an older student or maybe even Professor Carton. Surely he may know!

She quickly scribbled a few notes in her book. Focalia a duel purpose spell that could conjure firewood and set on a campfire when combined with a fire conjuring spell. The simple spell surely would have blown Appa’s mind. If only, she was of age to do those sorts of spells outside of school. ALAS! She was not. She sighed LOUDLY and continued to make notes. X motion.

Wand at the ready, she prepped her stance and practiced making an x motion. First, she started with left to right on the diagonal then right to left… Good….. BANG!

The loud bang caused her to jump and cover her head just in case she was in the accidental fire of a spell gone wrong. Peeking out from under her arms, she looked around to see what had happened. Daniel… At least he was fine… Lisa covered her mouth to stifle a chuckle (or was it a gasp or something in between?) when she saw what had transpired. She eyed her surroundings before refocusing on her spell work. “Focah-lia!” she cried putting everything together. Nope. Zip. EVEN DANIEL GOT A MEASLY PIECE OF WOOD WITH A BANG! And she got… goose eggs. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Lisa sighed heavily hanging her head and slumping her shoulders. Wait a second! She forgot to concentrate. And her pronunciation wasn’t quite right. She glanced up, determined more to try it again, and then focused. Come on firewooooooood! She began the wand movement in the X movement and spoke the incantation. “Focalia!

Two measly sticks but there were TWO of them! “Focalia! Focalia!” Now she had six sticks.

Evan spent far more time concentrating this go around, envisioning a nice log for the fire at home so they could curl up around it's warmth on Christmas. That log he could envision quite well, even if he didn't know what type of wood it still was. He could even smell it burning, which he also hoped would add to the execution of his spell.

Raising his wand, he attempted again. "Focalia! Focalia!"

A bright smile settled on the claws face as there sat two perfectly acceptable logs. Perhaps a little too big for a small fire, BUT they were still logs and successfully conjured. So he was taking this as a win as he knelt down to arrange his two logs and the twigs he'd also conjured around it as kindling. Pointing his wand at the little pile, he cast Incendio.

Default Main Activity starts here!
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

SPOILER!!: Mini activity responses
As the students set about their work, Norman began to slowly roam the room, pausing every so often to observe their progress. No sooner had he moved away from the front of the room did a loud BANG cause his dark head to whip around in the direction of the sound. “Are you alright, Mr. Yoon?” he asked, eyeing the boy with mild concern. He didn’t look injured, so he focused on figuring out what had gone wrong with that spell attempt. The intent was clearly there, as the boy had managed to produce a piece of wood even with an incomplete spell. Perhaps it was a problem with the wand work. “Try again. You can do it!”

Elsewhere, he saw Fox and Blaze team up and succeed in conjuring their firewood and starting their fire. “Excellent work, ladies,” he said with an approving smile as he passed. Blackthorne appeared to be getting on well with the firewood conjuring as well. “You too, Miss Blackthorne. Well done!” Changing directions, he noticed Mordaunt succeed at casting the spell nonverbally. Potter’s nonverbal attempts and success with Incendio didn’t go unnoticed either. He didn’t expect any of his students to attempt the spells nonverbally, but he had to admit he was impressed by their tenacity. “Great nonverbal spellwork, Mr. Mordaunt and Mr. Potter!”

As Norman reversed course to make his way back to the front, he paused to observe the elder Nam conjure driftwood and then twigs. The boy was getting closer with each attempt. Somehow he had a feeling that the third time would be the charm - or transfiguration, in this case. And he was right! “Excellent progress, Mr. Nam!” he said, positively beaming behind his scarf. The younger Nam appeared to be making great strides as well. He watched her first unsuccessful attempt and each subsequent more successful one with a small approving smile. “Nice work, Miss Nam!”

Standing at the front of the room once more, Norman addressed the class, “Your attention, please! If you aren’t done building your fire, you can go back to that in a minute. For now, we have another spell to learn…” He paused for a moment to allow time for the students to focus on him before continuing, “Sometimes, especially in climates like this, you’ll need more than fire for warmth. That’s where the blanket transformation spell comes in. The spell, as the name suggests, transforms its target into a blanket, cloak, curtain, or other large flat piece of fabric, depending upon the caster’s intent. While the spell works best with a fabric item, it can be used on any item.”

He allowed time for that information to sink in before going on, “To cast, we use the incantation Vestis, combined with a modifier depending upon the material we want the blanket to be. Vestis Cotone for a cotton blanket, Vestis Lectum for leather, and the variation we’ll be practicing today, Vestis Vellus for a wool blanket. To cast, say the incantation and make a curly-q wand movement like so…” He unwrapped the scarf from his face and held it up with one hand. With his other, he made the curly-q motion with his wand. “Vestis Vellus!” he said firmly. In an instant, a dark gray blanket replaced the scarf that was once in his hand. “Should you need to revert your blanket to its original form for any reason, use the reversion spell Reverto.” He demonstrated that spell by tapping the blanket and saying, “Reverto.”

Norman paused just long enough to rewrap his newly reverted scarf and make a new message appear midair in fiery red letters:

Quote:

“For the next activity, you’ll be going on a rescue mission of sorts,” he said. “Scattered throughout the area are three groups of people - not real, just illusions - in need of fire, blankets, or both. Your job is to determine which they need and transfigure that thing for them. On a real outdoor excursion, I’d recommend using the buddy system. Since we’re technically still in the classroom, there’s no danger of you getting lost, so you may work alone if you wish.” With a wave of his wand, he revealed a box that had up until now been disillusioned at his feet. “I have some fabric squares up here for you to use to practice Vestis Vellus. If you want to challenge yourself, you may practice the other variations of the Vestis spell also, but it’s not required for the activity.”

“You may take some time to practice Vestis Vellus amongst yourselves before you set out. Likewise, you may also finish your campfire if you haven’t already done so. When you’re ready, roam the room and help any people you encounter. You have the rest of class, starting NOW!”

OOC: We’ve reached the main activity. For this, your character needs to:
1. Collect fabric square(s) from the box at the front of the room.
2. Wander the classroom’s snowy landscape either solo or with a partner/group. Along the way, they’ll encounter 3 illusions of people.
3. Determine what the people in the illusions need to keep warm (either a fire, blankets, or both)
4. Transfigure the item the illusion needs. (Focalia + Incendio or matches for fire; Vestis Vellus for blanket)

Your character may practice Vestis Vellus on their own before setting out or practice Vestis Cotone and/or Vestis Lectum in addition, if so desired. Neither are required for credit. Catching up is also still allowed. Please DO NOT rp for the illusions! I’ll be posting prompts throughout to move you along. You have ABOUT 72 HOURS for this activity!

It wasn't every day that he got complimented with his non-verbals, and it was quite nice to be noticed once in a while. He'd been practising since his fourth year, and it took him some time to actually get the hang of it, but he was pleased that all that hard work paid off, just in time as well because he'd just turned 17 last year, and it meant he could use his wand in the muggle world. It was a huge plus to be able to do magic non-verbally, for obvious reasons. "Thanks, Professor." Noah gave Carton a smile and a nod, grateful for his attention. Not every professor was like him, did he know?

Noah sat straighter in his spot, keeping his arms extended forward, warming his hands with the pleasant fire he just made. The spells were pretty straightforward, thankful for taking extra Latin lessons last term, making it easier for him to do spell-casting. Nonetheless, Noah procured a pen and a small blank parchment from his pocket and scribbled down notes as quickly but neatly as possible. He was sure that these spells will come in handy once he goes out for camping soon. Anyway, Vestis Vellus for a warm wool blanket. Oh, they do have those back at home, especially during the holidays, so transforming one piece of cloth to a wool blanket should be easy.

As he listened to the professor and eyed the box in front, Noah nodded in understanding, pointing his wand at the box in front, and accio-ed a piece of fabric non-verbally again towards himself, catching it with his free hand. "Vestis Vellus," Noah murmured under his breath as he crumpled the fabric in his hand, wondering if he could do wandless magic next. Maybe he should ask Professor Carton about it after class, yeah? Practising the wand movement, Noah cleared out his thoughts, and clearly visualized his dad's favourite wool blanket that his mum always used while she was on the couch. Breathe in, breathe out, "Vestis Vellus." the cloth crumpled and twisted itself, and then unfurled on its own, dropping to the ground next to Noah. The Gryffindor picked it up with a smirk, pleased that he was able to "bring" a piece of home to school. The sixth year wrapped the blanket around his shoulders, instantly warming him up like it was supposed to. Now did they really have to do rescue missions now? The fire and blanket was so pleasant, he no longer wished to move.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Daniel was used to small explosions or being sent flying through the air whenever he was practising a spell. This was also one of the reasons why he prefered to practice alone with no one around. Sometimes, nothing would happen but most times his wand seemed to want to do its own thing. The wandmaker had already warned him about it but if he was given this wand it meant he was able to control it.

He wasn't oblivious to the heads turning his way and while he kept staring at the ground, focusing on the spell, his cheeks turned a light tint of pink. Or was this because of the cold? No one would ever find out.

Choosing to ignore everyone and not make eye contact, Daniel was about to try again when the voice of the professor caused him to stop his wand movement. "......I'm fine" he answered curtly before briefly looking up at him. Without another word, the Hufflepuff waved his wand again. He focused on his intent to conjure a pile of firewood, visualized it appearing before him on the ground and waved his wand in an X shape. "Focalia"

Another piece of firewood appeared, falling on top of the other one. He wished he could make more than one at a time. "Focalia!" he said again, a little firmer now and watched as a few wood blocks appeared. This had to be sufficient enough.

Daniel turned back around after setting the pile of wood on fire to listen to the Professor again as he continued the class. His dark brown eyes watched as the man performed a new spell and transfigured his scarf into a blanket. As the fiery red letters appeared midair, Daniel stooped down to open his bag and took his pen and notebook and began to copy what was written before snapping it back shut and dropping the notebook back in his bag.

Considering his explosion earlier, Daniel thought it was best to practice the new spell before going out to rescue the illusions of people. He walked up to the box at the Professor's feet just as a piece of fabric flew past him. The Hufflepuff looked back to see it flying towards Noah and he felt jealous all of the sudden because accio was a spell he did not have under control yet. He looked inside the box and grabbed the first fabric that he saw. A dull grey fabric.

Walking back to his small pile of firewood, Daniel held the piece of fabric in front of him and moved his wand in the shape of a curly q "Vestis Vellus" he said. Nothing changed so he tried again. "Vestis Vellus" again, nothing. "Vestis Vellus" this time the piece of fabric began to change into a woollen blanket but stopped halfway so now he was holding half and half in his hand. The second-year sighed in frustration before reverting the spell (he was good at this one seeing as he spend the majority of the year practising spells) to its original state.

After another few attempts, he had finally managed to transfigure the fabric completely into a blanket wrapped it around himself. Pocketing his wand back in his wrist holster, Daniel left the area without a word in search for the 'illusioned people'

Default Professor Carton? Also, Noah!

Violet was enjoying this assignment--she liked doing things that she thought might be useful in the future. After grabbing a square of cloth from the box, she'd successfully transformed it (after a few false starts with the wand movement) into a woolen blanket: "Vestis Vellus!" Then, feeling confident, she started experimenting with the spell, transfiguring the cloth into a cotton blanket, a leather one, and back to wool. The leather wasn't very comfortable and Violet couldn't think why one would want that at first, but then she realized that leather would probably be good at keeping off rain and such.

Violet wondered if you could make a blanket out of any object and raised her hand to ask just as she heard Professor Carton continue with the rest of the assignment. "Professor?" she continued hurriedly, because she really wanted to ask before getting involved in the project, "Do you have to use something made of cloth to transfigure a blanket, or can you use any object?" As she said this, she started looking around for likely partners for the next steps, which sounded fairly involved.

Violet noticed Noah sitting under his blanket, looking much too comfortable for an outdoor class, and started walking toward him even as she looked toward Professor Carton to catch his answer. Violet had briefly worked with Noah before and he hadn't been too bad. A little bossy, perhaps, like most Gryffindors (really, like most seventh years), but he'd seemed competent enough, too, and Violet felt like this assignment required partners who knew something.

"Noah? Do you want to form a group?" she asked. "That is, if you're not too comfortable here to complete the assignment," she added, because Slytherins just couldn't resist being a bit snarky when given the chance.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

“Thanks, professor,” Claudine replied, pleased with her conjuring skills so far during today’s lesson. Hopefully her skills continued for this Blanket Transformation spell. She had no idea why but she was eager to transfigure something into a patchwork quilt. It was the first item that came to mind when Carton explained the spell.

Having a good feeling about the rest of the activity, she snagged a few fabric squares then headed back to Ash. “Partners?’’ Since she liked working with the Ravenclaw and they had been doing so earlier, it made sense for her to ask. “Vestis Vellus. Vestis Vellus.” So that wasn’t the most difficult of incantations but the wand movement was and Claudine took some extra time practicing to get it right.

“Vestis Vellus.” Cue the curly q shape as Carton had demonstrated. Nothing. “Vestis Vellus,’’ the girl tried again, picturing a cotton patchwork quilt. The wad movement was done again as she focused on the image in her head. And there it was: one cotto patchwork quilt complete with a fluffy blue clouds design.

Evan was quite glad he'd managed to already have his fire lit by the time the main activity came along, as a little extra time to practice the blanket spell would be preferred. He generally liked to have a go at the pronounciation and wand movements, separate prior to first cast, just to prevent any initial hiccups. So once instructions were given out, he took a moment before collecting his fabric squares - moving his wand in the curly q motion. Once that started to feel second nature, he muttered the incantation a bit under his breath - "Vestis Vellus!”

After a bit 5 minutes of switching between those two practice activities, he opted to head towards the front and grab a handful of the fabric squares - putting a couple in his pocket while he focused on one for his first attempt. He pictured a black and red checkered wool blanket and put all his might into thinking on that, before raising his wand into the curly q and speaking, "Vestis Vellus!” The first go on this one he was rather proud of. It could have offered to be thicker, but there were no holes and it did seem the normal shape of a blanket.

So calling that a win.

From there, the Ravenclaw decided to jump right into the activity. He considered briefly trying to partner up - but there'd been so many partner activities as of late he opted to try going it alone this time around. If someone chose to approach him, he wouldn't turn them away - he just did not feel it necessary to seek out a partner. But it was necessary to seek out the illusions, so Evan moved along to explore the scape of the not so classroom classroom. He bundled his outer wear a little tighter as he did so, before spotting a small group of what appeared to be people ahead.

Classmates or one of the parties to be rescued? That was the question.

SUMMER FOREVER

Vestis Vellus. Valentina practiced saying the incantation out loud a few times, accompanying it with the appropriate wand movement too. She collected the fabric squares from the front of the classroom and set them down. Pulling out her wand, she pointed at one, picturing an orange wool blanket. Orange being her favourite colour, obviously. "Vestis Vellus!" She casted the spell along with the curly q wand movement - and there it was!! WOW. She picked the bright orange blanket up for a moment, looking rather pleased. Moving on to the activity now -

Setting it back down, she roamed around the classroom slowly, hoping to encounter the illusions soon. This was actually a fun activity!! A lot more fun than she had expected, anyway.
