Default Greenhouses

Are you here to spend some time with all your green friends? Maybe you’ll spot Professor June somewhere in there tending to her favourites. If she sees you - she would love to hand you a slug repellent to help de-slug the school cabbage patch. If not, then take a look around - the battle last term has done a number on the greenhouses but Professor June is slowly working to better them. She has even set up a lovely little corner with a bench in greenhouse one - maybe you’ll be inspired to do your Herbology homework there while watching the color changing roses, and enjoying the sun.

OOC: Here's a basic guide of what you might find in each greenhouse; please remember to play realistically based on your character's age and skill level!
Credit for the layout of the Greenhouses go to previous Herbology Professors: BanaBatGirl, kayquilz and Shanners <3

Serena had not noticed V on her way into the greenhouse, and had she known that, she would have reprimanded herself. She was thirteen now and come summer she was going to start training the way Baltazar heirs train. There's high expectations Serena plans on exceeding.

After grabbing the vine clipping and sticking it inside the phial, she straightened up. Serena frowned at the dead plants. The cold finally catching up to her, she rubbed her hands together to warm them up. "The plants in here aren't supposed to die. At least...I thought they weren't." She finally turned her attention to V, raised an eyebrow and smirked. "Are you stalking me?"

She liked teasing V. Why? She had no clue.

Her smirk disappeared, replaced by a look of curiosity instead. "V...you're glowing--"

Wait a minute. V Gellar wasn't glowing. It was the plants around them that were glowing.

follow me; everything is all right.

Spring is on its way, a time associated with new, flourishing life. In the greenhouses, however, only one thing is thriving. The sole surviving vined plant housed here has reached maturity, and is suddenly unrecognisable as the plant it once was.

This plant is glowing now too, though much brighter than any of the dead or dying plants around it. Surely not a coincidence that this occurs just as those pesky vines around Hogwarts grow more active.

Perhaps you noticed all this in the past day or so, but if you were thinking of checking in on these plants now, you're out of luck. The greenhouses are no longer accessible; a thick, toxic fog now settles in around the area. Even the acrid smell warns of danger, and magic does nothing to help breach it.

Steer clear of the fog, if you know what's good for you.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

June was devastated.

It was as simple as that. Her face was pale as she stood outside the greenhouses - watching the horror that had somehow escalated overnight. Her dear plants! All of them gone, all but those vines -- and not her adored ones, but the ones which had been a gift.

Completely flabbergasted, the herbology professor was racking her brain trying to figure out what exactly had gone wrong when she noticed the acidic fog seemed to be slowly .... spreading out. To say she felt afraid was probably an understatement. Immediately pulling out her wand, the brunette cast a charm around the entire area -- containing what had escaped in it's place and shielding off the greenhouses entirely.

It was heartbreaking but for the best.

The charm from the Herbology Professor had kept the acrid fog confined within the greenhouses, but this had not hindered its development. Over the past few weeks, the fog had grown thicker, obscuring even the glowing vined plant from view, had spread towards the other greenhouses...

...and now, curiously, slipped slowly, almost imperceptibly, outside the bounds of the charm.

Violet was walking across the grounds in search of her pet magpie, Mack, who appeared to have once again snuck out of the creature sanctuary, no doubt in search of mischief to get into. And if Mack got in trouble, that meant she would get in trouble, so she had to find him. Honestly, she was wishing she had a more normal (and better behaved) pet. Having a magpie bond with her had seemed cool in her youth, but having to constantly be on the lookout for his tricks was getting old now she was in her fifth year and had more important problems on her mind (like O.W.L.S.!!) She wished they would let her keep Mack in his cage in her dorm; she could keep much better control of him then. But no, Hogwarts had all these rules about which pets could stay and which had to be out in the sanctuary, and Violet really didn't see the difference.

As she skirted the greenhouses, which Professor Flamsteed had said were now out of limits, she started smelling a foul, acrid odor and walked a little closer to try to find out where it was coming from. What she saw really scared her--there seemed to be a sort of bad-smelling fog coming from the greenhouse area, seeping across the ground. Violet was pretty sure that was not supposed to be happening. Forgetting all about Mack, she turned and started running back to the castle, determined to find Professor Flamsteed (or someone) and tell them what was happening.

follow me; everything is all right.

What started as a mild May day has quickly devolved into chaos. The air ripples with an uncharacteristic chill, the temperature dropping ever colder. The sky darkens until it resembles the pitch-black of midnight. An ominous rumbling sound echoes as the ground begins to shake. The curse of the Pharoah's Triumph is taking hold on Hogwarts!

Hurrying along with the rest of the crew out of the library, down the moving staircases, and across the grounds towards the greenhouses...Atlas couldn't help but wonder how close was TOO close with this sort of thing. If three was a toxic mist or whatever the tome had called it that was dissipating in the very air around Hogwarts and had been for a while now...weren't they all...you know...infected with something pretty sinister? Could he blame his lack of magical talent during the term on it since it consumed magic?

These thoughts, and others, rattling around inside his brain...Atlas found himself getting close to his aunt and TOTALLY INSTINCTIVELY reached out to hold her hand with the one sans one of the torches from the castle walls. It was the same kind of uncertainty and fear motivated gesture like he had done the first time he and Aries had been taken to see the monstrosity that was a giant pink rabbit in a colorful plaid vest at some muggle shopping centre. It took a couple of seconds to register what he had just done and pulled his hand back and shoved it into his trouser pocket.

"So...ARE we going to just set fire to the whole greenhouse then?" he asked, repeating his sentiments to anyone who would hear him and hopefully his aunt would NOT hear him so she wouldn't cry or something because he really did not want to see that. "How clo----"

And then the ground beneath his feet felt like someone had cast Spongify upon it and a several colonies of centaurs were galloping towards them (SPEAKING OF...were they okay?!) and he could only see what was illuminated by the torch's flame within his immediate vicinity.

Despite his obvious tremble and eyes wide with terror, the Gryffindor found his next words fueled by immense irritation. "...no offense...but I didn't survive a war to be taken down by a bunch of vines...so...what do we do?" He was seriously ready to throw his torch in the general direction of the greenhouse. But then he paused and heard his words over in his head and figured he ought to be a little more considerate. "Sorry. We. We didn't all survive a war just to be taken out by a bunch of vines."

And, in case anyone was asking, he was still very much for the catapult idea.

Well, yeah. True. The fog would still be an issue even if they got into the Greenhouse but she had hoped that they could have at least saved the trouble of having to deal with it on the outside. That had been as far as she’d thought though. Anyway. So what… now they needed to find matches? Sticks that they could whittle to start a fire?

Claudine drifted back towards Ash, abandoning the group she had been with earlier. Out to the Greenhouses she had headed, following behind some members of the group. Naturally her wand was still clutched in her hands because Claudine was not looking to die today, and was unwilling to let herself be taken down by a piece of greenery.

She shivered a bit; it was so chilly out here. And… goodness, it was so dark out here. But you know what was more unnerving and sent her panicking a hint? The shaking ground. Without thinking, she stopped abruptly in her tracks and reached for Ash to clutch at.

Dear Merlin.

Once he was sure that the more mischief-prone students had vacated the Restricted Section, Kamran had left the rest of that in Meda's capable hands, in favour of accompanying the bulk of the group. Being aware he had gone and permitted them to grab flaming torches along the way, it seemed a good idea he stick with them.

But Merlin, this leg. He was regretting not stopping by the Hospital Wing ahead of time; Neva could have seen to it in moments.

Levitating along a small batch of wall torches he himself had collected from the castle and picking his way around vines as they approached the poison-shrouded greenhouses, Kamran was about to respond to Flamsteed's question - as sensitively as he could, as June was nearby, but no less honestly - when it happened. You know, the ominous cold, dark, rumbling, oh-yeah-you're-totally-on-the-threshold-of-a-good-cursing thing. He instinctively flung a hand out for balance, and planted his feet, but was not exactly steady to begin with; didn't seem like it would be long before he found out how the ground tasted for perhaps the fourth time in his life.

Just. About. Had it.

"Unless anyone can think of another way to find and hit just that one plant..." He spoke loud, over the rumbling, and though his teeth chattered in the cold maintained his composure, not being one to lose his head and knowing it was the last thing the kids needed to witness. "... Mr Flamsteed may have the right idea." Again. Kamran couldn't decide if it was good for the boy to hear that, or plain disastrous. "Take a torch if you don't have one yet, and if you see any stray branches nearby, grab one and be ready to light it." To what end? Still not firmly decided, so he didn't give the go ahead to start the burning. Yet.

But the book had not gone into great depth on this curse; there was no telling exactly how much danger they were in, or how long until they were past the point of no return. Maybe it wasn't so bad; so many of the plants inside were already dead, after all, and unlikely to be salvaged. Take them out of the equation, and it was just the Pharaoh's Triumph and the structures themselves to worry about. The latter could be replaced.

Somehow, though, Kamran didn't think that would be much consolation.

Would it be completely wrong of her to let out a loud "Whoo-hoo"-never mind, too late. But honestly, Dia was just ready to be done with the stupid vines already, curse or no curse. She had lost count of how many times she had just been walking down the corridor or the Great Hall or the freaking stairs and suddenly found herself tripping over a vine! Especially when said vine hadn't been there just moments before. So, if burning down the house greenhouse would get rid of the damn things, she was all for it regardless of whoever's feelings it would hurt. No offense.

It was with this thought in mind that she gleefully grabbed a torch and readied herself to light some vines!

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

It had been challenging for the Hufflepuff to leave the restricted section in the library. But if the Pharaoh's Triumph was going to be at full power soon that meant that the school could close down. And he did not want that! He still had so much exploring to do and he wanted to try and get the tome book again next year!

As he arrived at the greenhouse, Daniel took hold of one of the torches that Professor Kazmi had been levitating out of the castle and held it firmly in his hands before he looked up at the sky. Was it just him or had the temperature dropped? He bit his lower lip nervously as the sky suddenly turned darker until it resembled the night sky and the boy used the light of the fire to look around to see Claudine and Ash close by.

He was extremely salty about not having received any compliment when he had been the one to discover the Pharaoh's Triumph in the book first and his annoyance got even bigger when he begrudgingly had to agree that Atlas' idea of setting the greenhouse on fire was the best option so far. They could get new plants and build a new greenhouse. Building a new school would be far more difficult and time-consuming even with the use of magic.

He was ALSO still salty that HE wasn't the one to have planted it and wasn't getting absolute power... UGH! Anyway, he was ready to light a greenhouse on fire!

It was so unfortunate that they had to burn down the Pharaoh's Triumph. Serena would love to look more into its properties and see how it could fit as potion ingredient. She'd bet a potion with that in it could be legendary.

Welp. Guess they had to save Hogwarts.

As always. Students somehow ALWAYS saved Hogwarts. How was that a thing?

While the professor's words turned in Serena's head, her stormy blue eyes took in the scene, calculating. "We could catapult flaming objects onto the greenhouse," she said thoughtfully, yet seriously. She had a catapult back home and hasn't used it since she out grew it at age eight. "We could also aim flaming arrows into the greenhouse." Again, she was serious about this. She's been training archery since last summer. It was part of her coming of age training and she had to ace everything by time she reached sixteen. "Does Hogwarts have bow and arrows?"

She was dead serious.

Or they could torch things. Though getting too close would not be all that fun. But fire.

She gets to set things on fire.

Violet stood with the others, holding her torch. Too bad they had to use non-magical means of fire, since she'd become so good at the Incendio charm, but from what the book had said, it made sense (and Violet had a deep respect for books). The ground rumbling under her and the ominous atmosphere sent a chill down her spine. People were saying things like, after taking down the Neo-Alliance, they weren't going to let vines stop them, but Violet felt that any harm caused by people was a lot less worrying that that caused by natural forces. She waited to see what was decided upon, by Professor Kazmi or someone else with some experience--listening to her fellow students, she didn't much trust their ability to actually hit the greenhouses reliable with catapults or especially bows and arrows. This was all just horrible, though Violet was glad that people were paying attention to the problem at last and that something was being done.

And what about the fumes? The Bubblehead Charm was magic and would be no use against the Pharaoh's Triumph, and she didn't suppose Hogwarts was equipped with gas-masks or anything.

The inclement weather was doing nothing to help her think. Not to mention there were the jitters coming on as Claudine feared with each passing second they would be attacked. So no, she had no bright ideas at this time. The seventh year just grabbed a torch. She eyed the flames. These hadn’t been lit magically by chance, right?

Welcoming the warmth, she kept the flames close to her in one hand. Claudine gave her head a shake as though trying to get rid of the heebie jeebie feeling. Right. It was time to focus. Were there any vines lurking about?

Javier had been headed to the library to research some new potion brewing techniques for their next lesson when he had spotted the group of students and staff walking out like they meant BUSINESS. He was going to let it be…until the weather started to shift at an alarming rate through the windows of the corridor a few moments later. Javier had been out of Hogwarts for a while, but he still knew that any time you saw a change in the environment and a group of people looking super serious about something - they were likely related. He couldn’t just sit by and let them have fun without him, right? Plus, he had to make sure whatever was going on wouldn’t turn into something dangerous - for Camila’s sake.

Walking so fast he was almost jogging, he’d quietly caught up and followed them down to the greenhouses, settling in behind the group and listening as Kaz began to hand out torches to the students. He slowly made his way through the students to the front, stopping every now and then to steady himself as the ground trembled, and he tried to ignore the growing chill in the air. After listening to the flying instructor, he started to put two and two together, which in turn made him a smile to himself. Did this mean they would finally be rid of these blasted vines??? Thank MERLIN.

”How else can I help?” he asked him as he pushed his way to the front and held out a hand expectedly for a torch.

Having also spotted the group of students and professors heading out of the library, Rosalie decided to join them. And even if she hadn't then, the subsequent and sudden change in the weather and temperature outside would have caused her to catch up with them.

After getting a quick run down on the plan from one Miss Grimm, Rosalie summoned a box of matches from her office. Normally she mostly used them for lighting a campfire or fireplace - somehow she typically preferred it over the spell Incendio, a habit that stuck with her from her non-magical days when she was a child. But, well, it seemed these would come in handy in this situation.

She carried the small box in one hand, picking up a few branches on the ground along the way.

Er, flaming arrows though? "I don't think we do, Miss Baltazar-Dos Santos," she said, though she glanced at Kamran and Javier in case they were aware of some that she wasn't. "I'm sure they could be conjured, but if this plant isn't affected by magic..." Then it'd be unlikely to do any damage, unfortunately.

"I do have some matches here; I can help light some branches or anything else we've got that might help." The torches would be good for that as well, but it didn't hurt to have options to quickly light some fires, especially with how unnaturally dark it was now.

Ivy had indeed grabbed a torch and explained what was going on to Professor Applewood when she joined in along the way. Aaaand things were definitely getting worse. The darkening sky, the trembling ground...yeah, she didn't like this. They needed to take care of this thing as soon as possible. Like Atlas said, they hadn't gone through what they had two years ago, nor what they had four years ago with that vortex either, to be defeated by some evil plant.

"Maybe once we get everything lit, we should be ready with some shield charms, just in case the fire spreads." If the plan was to basically set everything on fire, and they probably couldn't use magic to contain the fire in one spot until the plant was truly destroyed, they ought to be prepared to protect themselves in case the fire spread pretty far before the plant was gone. She was sure the professors could cast one that was large enough to protect everyone here, but still. The more shields, the better.

Fire they had covered in the form of torches, and Kamran wondered if the fire from an Incendio spell could last inside the fog, provided it was already burning on kindling or a torch and away from its magical source. Rosalie had matches, which would be invaluable if that theory fell flat. As much as Baltazar-Dos Santos' suggestion would have been perfect, Rosalie summed up the issue there. Catapults, however... Flamsteed had suggested as much too... "If someone were to transfigure catapults out here, it wouldn't be affected by the fog. But a good hard throw might be enough." Did he trust the majority of these students to immediately understand how to aim flaming projectiles in a catapult?

... No comment.

Divvying out torches to Wolff, Yoon, Blaze - Blackthorne and Flamsteed both had it covered - and now Javier too, Kamran addressed the last as he handed him a torch. "Burn the greenhouses, contain the flames. Pick your poison."

A particularly ominous rumbling beneath his feet spurred Kamran into action - may as well find out if this would work. Taking a painful step forward, clear of the crowd, he separated one burning torch from the others, levitated it before him, aimed it at the greenhouse in the centre of the fog. "Flipendo." Maybe as the spell only needed to work out here to give it enough momentum...

Off it flew, careening through the fog, and directly through a glass pane. The small flare of flame still visible, now on the inside, told Kamran all he needed to know. That was... nowhere near enough to get the job done. He addressed the others, looking at torchlit faces. "Nothing else for it. Go ahead and throw what you have in there, or use the knockback jinx, whatever works. I'll work on shielding us from the flames if it becomes necessary." He set the remaining torches levitating in the air. Grimm had a very good point, about controlling the fire, and that was exactly what he planned to do. Once all this - hopefully - cleared, the flames ought to be put out at once. "Professor Applewood has matches, there are dead branches all around. Just go-..." Wild? Please don't. "... -for it." And for the love of Merlin be careful.

Was June looking away yet? She should maybe do that.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

June was most definitely not looking away, but she was also not leading this charge. She was instead standing close by, staring ahead at the fog covered greenhouses - a place she had called home for a few years now. When the skies changed and the ground rumbled, she felt it reflected all that she was feeling.

All her plants, her office with all her work, her journals and more, everything was about to be set ablaze.

Burn the greenhouses.

When Kamran's torch crashed through the window, June's heart dimmed entirely - but she rose her wand, and spoke with no hint of emotions, "I'll contain the flames" She could not set it on fire, and she knew everyone else was ready to. So, she'd do what she could.

Serena was fully expecting her suggestions to be brushed aside by the adults, but they weren't. That was new. It made Serena see them in a slightly better light.

No bows and arrows. No catapults. Curse it! Why hadn't she learned how to transfigure things into catapults? That was going to go on her list to master. Also, ask her dad to minimize her REAL catapult she had in storage and pack it for next term, because clearly it was needed.

"I haven't learned that, yet," she said in response to Professor K.

Well, then.

Serena eyed the torch in her hand as she stabilized herself on the shaky ground. Military stories her godfather told her about suddenly ran through her mind. They couldn't use magical fire to get rid of this thing. Serena envisioned the tactics muggles used. Their weapons, their jets...

"Professor Kazmi!" she shouted, a little too excited. "We don't need catapults. We could possible fly over the greenhouses and drop torches on them?" That way they wouldn't get close to the fog and there wouldn't be stray torches all over the place. Plus, they'd cover more ground like that. Attack without being in hands' reach. Bombs away?

Violet felt bad for Professor Flamsteed when she saw the look on her face as the first torch hit the first greenhouse. "Don't worry, Professor Flamsteed," she assured her, "we can build back the greenhouses, we'll make them better than ever, but they're no good to us the way they are." Violet hoped the professor understood. As for herself--she was usually pretty miserable at athletics, so she opted to use the knockback jinx, as Professor Kazmi had, rather than trusting to her arm to lob her torch into another spot.

As she stepped back and began looking to see if there were any more torches, Violet heard someone suggest flying over the burning greenhouses. Oh, Merlin, no!! Violet had enough trouble just flying, she was not about to try to do it holding a torch and flying over a conflagration.

Ivy’s idea. Claudine liked that. A Shield Charm would definitely come in handy. She readied the torche she had in her possession. The idea of throwing it at the Greenhouse crossed her mind but Claudine quickly dispelled that idea. She didn’t have enough upper body strength to get her torch that far. And Kazmi’s Knockback Jinx seemed to work quite well.

Claudine shot an apologetic look at professor Flamsteed, sorry to be destroying the greenhouse. But they had to do what they must. Immediately after Violet’s torch took off, Claudine’s did as well. Her torch shattered another window and she hoped at least one torch had so far found that crucial piece of vine they were blindly trying to find.

“I think it would be better if we send torches one after the other, or even at the same time. But… you know, as long as we do it quickly. As the torches run out, some of us can light branches while the rest of us cast them at the greenhouse.” Sort of like an onslaught as the way they had attacked the vines in the courtyard a while a go.

If only dad could see him now.

All those years of practicing setting things on fire and experimenting with those bottled elements nicked from daddy's office were finally paying off! He was not thinking so much about the ramifications of what was about to take place as he flashed the Flying instructor a big ol' toothy grin and single thumbs up. He would have given two but his other hand was occupied by a torch.

He would remember how traumatic this was for his aunt in a couple of minutes. Hopefully.

Perhaps once he got over the bout of irritation at that one Slytherin repeating his catapult idea as if it were her own. Maybe he DID need to speak more loudly at times and everyone was mistaken that he was loud.

In any case, with two options to choose from and a school to save, Atlas refocused himself and looked at the torch in his hand. Problem was how was he meant to get it from here all the way over to the greenhouses. He was no chaser or keeper...and generally lacked any real athletic ability that would allow him to hurtle is far enough. And he wasn't about to try only to have it land not even half way between himself and the greenhouse, that would be humiliating. He couldn't levitate it over either since the spell would wear off before it got there...but the mention of a Knockback Jinx provided a bit of promise.

Why were people still standing around and talking though?! FIYAH TIME!

Holding the torch out in front of himself, Atlas pointed his wand at the base and cleared his throat. "Flipendo!" That certainly did the trick as the torch went flying right out of his hand, flipping and spinning through the air, and hit the greenhouse with a distant crash of glass. It was the crash that did it, sobering him up to the weight of the situation as seen and felt by his aunt. Those plants, assuming any of them were still alive, were like...like babies to her. Like Aunt Jade's dogs or dad's, er, pet rock. It was irrational but...Atlas felt his chest constrict and he moved over to her proper this time and slipped his hand into hers.

"...I'm sorry...Aunt June..."

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

No. He did NOT like the plan of flying over the greenhouses on their brooms. He was a terrible flyer and only did speeding well. If he had to carry a lit torch in his hand while flying he'd probably fall off. Luckily, the Professors hadn't agreed to it yet and instead, Daniel watched as Professor Kazmi was the first to use the knockback jinx on a torch and sent it flying through one of the greenhouse windows.

Destroying the greenhouse was not on the Hufflepuff's "fun to do list' so a frown appeared on his face as he observed the Herbology professor in the light of the fire. She looked unsettled but it also seemed like she knew that there was no other option than to destroy her work. He didn't want to imagine if something were to happen and they had to burn down the library. Although he felt apologetic towards her, the second year did nt utter a word because he felt like they were useless. Like, how Atlas looked way too excited as he crashed a torch right through the glass window before moving to his aunt to say 'sorry'. It irritated him so much.

He held his torch in front of him before he pointed his wand and aimed for the already shattered glass when the ground began to shake which caused his accuracy to be slightly off. Instead of the flaming torch going through the gap in the window like he wanted to happen, it hit the window next to it.

This was going way too easy in his opinion though. Why hadn't the Pharaoh's Triumph attacked them yet? Surely it wasn't going to go down without a fight?

follow me; everything is all right.

The temperature dips further still, the ground shaking and shuddering with growing intensity. Panes of glass in the greenhouse walls crack and shatter in their frames.

Torches and flaming projectiles hit the glass with a myriad smash, clatter, crunch, crash, their glowing faintly visibly through the fog and beyond the glass. The flames take hold of the dead plants inside, and the fire spreads quickly, ripping through the greenhouses, flames licking the smoke-darkened glass and flickering through the smashed windows.

All at once, a harrowing, bone-chilling SCREEEEEEEECH emits from the very centre of the poisonous fog as the fire finds its target. The ground shakes with almighty force, but the scream reaches a crescendo only to fade out. The ground settles and darkness slowly turns back to day, as the curse is stopped in its tracks.

The fog begins to dissipate, the warmth returns. All around, vines hang limp, dying and withered. At the centre of it all, the once beautiful and bountiful greenhouses stand ablaze, devastated.

The Pharaoh's Triumph is defeated.
