Default DADA Lesson 1 - TBA

As promised, you find yourself heading to the Defense classroom bright and early the morning after the feast. Hopefully, you've made use of the hearty breakfast the elves provided because there's a good chance you'll need it. This likely went without saying as this class tends to be on the more...physical side.

When you enter the room, you find it's not any sort of room at all. On the contrary, for those who've been to this school from prior years--particularly those a little hard of hearing--the place resembles the one and very same Forbidden Forest. The sudden change to night may be a bit jarring to some while others may be pleased to return to the illusion it isn't, in fact, morning.

The Headmaster stands just inside the door, waiting for everyone to join him among the trees. An ominous full moon hangs low, seeming to touch the tops of the towering trees. A chill sweeps through the forest and in the distance, there is the sound of rustling.

Step lively, this is one class the Headmaster would rather miss.

OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours

Please note: The students are not in the classroom, please do not RP them coming in and taking a seat. Thank you

Ollie shot a look towards Max. Wasn't he a first year? What did he know? And as a matter of fact, Ollie knew that this forrest was specifically the forbidden forest, not just some random forrest that had other things you needed to worry about. She was glad V had come to her side.

When Kinsay spoke up about the border, it made sense to Olllie too. But Ollie still stood by her answer. The school had labeled it forbbiden for a reason. Just becuse the school could bring students in for detention or classes and such doesn't mean it wasn't too dangerous for studets to venture into alone. So if Ollie were to have ventured into this forrest alone, the first thing she'd been worried about is getting in trouble for being there.

But clearly some of her peers didn't agree with her answer. "Well if I wasn't worried about the forrest being forbidden, I guess I would be worried about getting attacked in general. Every forrest holds different things, so I would just have my guard up and ready for whatever might reside there." There! No first year could argue with that answer.

it's either adhd or wrackspurts <3 <3 lily luna's mom has got it going on

Eden rolled her eyes at James' answer. She was essentially asking for a tighter leash, wasn't she? Petty first-year-feud or not, that was dumb.

The third year made a little hole in the soil with her shoe as her classmates responded to the question. She wished she'd stood next to Quinn. Maybe they could've played tick tack toe. Or maybe not. Rosier TRENT didn't take kindly to messing around, and Kingsley didn't like to get in trouble. Not that Eden did. She just found herself in it more often than not.

"The first danger I'd worry about is the motives of whoever dropped me off in the forbidden forest. Or any forest. That seems like asking for trouble, planned or not. Horror movie-serial killer-kidnapper vibes. Our Care of Magical Creatures excursion two years ago was planned, and look how that went."

She didn't know why she said that. Now her mind was conjuring up images of scary-buttery, who still had not returned her property and who she totally wasn't sad was gone. Totally not.

She also totally wasn't anxious at all when the door went away. Nope.

Phoebe settled an arm around Kizzy's waist and gave her a comforting pat. The little sprog wasn't so little anymore, and putting an arm around her shoulders was starting to be less comforting and more like a stranglehold. But anyway, the kid had nothing to worry about. No one could hurt her in a pretend forest, and no one would dare hurt her in a real one.

"It was a hypothetical question about hypothetical werewolves, sir. That wasn't my guess." Not that they'd been asked to guess. Well, before. Now they WERE being asked to guess about the hazards of the forest. "Tripping is definitely what I would worry about first. And inferi hands reaching out of the darkness and grabbing my ankles. Dragging me into the underbrush. Underbrush has always seemed terribly ominous to me."

Claudine’s familiar greeting got a smile from Heath, but his smile faded upon seeing how forced hers was. Before he could say anything to reassure her, the lesson began, and he turned his attention to Headmaster Trent. The introduction, just like the headmaster gave every year, sort of went in one ear and out the other… until it suddenly occurred to him that this was the last time he’d hear it. He mentally shook himself. Merlin, what was he doing? This was no time to get all sentimental!

Well, yes, he had started guessing where this lesson might lead. He’d already thought of acromantulas, werewolves, and dementors, but he supposed only time would tell which one (if any of those things at all) they’d be facing. For now, he considered the headmaster’s question. The first thought that occurred to him was acromantulas, but that had already been said, Besides, he doubted anyone wanted to be reminded of that other planned excursion! Thinking along similar lines, he raised his hand and said, “I’d be worried about something catching me by surprise, either a creature or sudden change in environment. That’s why it’s important to always pay attention to your surroundings.”

Yes, that was the very lesson she referred to. The one that Nemesis had encouraged her to ask about and naturally Lisa took the bait. She appreciated Headmaster Trent offering her to stop by his office later on. She would take him up on that surely so she thanked him.

She didn’t know V’s thoughts about her standing next to Remy. She hadn’t intentionally done so out of malice but simply because she didn’t want to be in between another V and Daniel spat. She liked both of them but… Remy and her and some things left to discuss about certain Gryffindors at a later point in time.

She offered Ollie a smile. “It is obvious for a forest to be forbidden to not enter into but surely there are some people who would.” Ahem. Here’s looking at you, Gryffindors and Daniel Yoon. And honestly- she’s probably enter the forest herself for giggles to see what it was all about. As for strategy, she began to explain herself. “I think Lumos could be helpful in finding your footing as Daniel mentioned but I would not cast Lumos. I think it would bring attention to myself. I’d ready myself with a shield charm and let my eyes adjust to the night. Creating light or a fire would attract attention,” she explained.

In all honesty Serena would feed anyone here (with the exception of Lisa, V, Ollie and Ashley) to the dangers in the woods that tried to eat. See, you distract the monster with food then BAM. Attack it.

She couldn't say that, though. The Headmaster wouldn't like it.

"The first danger that would cross my mind is things I can't see watching me. So I'd be ready to cast a protection spell," she said, thinking if this was real. Even she'd feed annoying first years to monsters. "If I was someone else, we'd protect each other's backs."

Soon enough, the Headmaster announced that class was beginning. Jordyn turned her attention to the man in charge and listened carefully. He asked a question of the class and after thinking a minute, she raised her hand.

“The first danger I could think of would be the darkness and the unfamiliar forrest. I would be concerned about not being able to see who or what was around me that could be dangerous. I could use Lumos to light my wand and help me to see.” Then another thought came to her. “Of course lighting my wand might tip off any dangerous creatures to my presence…..so that could be a tricky situation.”

"I'm glad you caught that." He said, pleased the first of the responses was already off to a good start. "While you do definitely have the danger of not being able to find your way safely through, the trade off to using a light source could make you as big a target. That's one of the reasons it's so important to know who or what lives in whatever area you're trying to visit."

"Another good point, yes." Something not as often thought of in the face of bigger dangers. "Get lost long enough and you could suffer exposure. Even a crude map should be employed when going to new places." Of course, he expected them to be FAR MORE prepared than THAT, but at the very least, a crudely drawn map.

As had been the case the evening before, they didn't react or respond right away, only stared straight at him. When they did move, it was to check their own watch, just as he'd done a few moments ago. It might have seemed like blatant mimicry, were it not for the fact that they hadn't been looking at the Big Headsman until just now.

After consulting their watch for a long, drawn out moment, and glancing once more at the Headmaster, Nem did exactly as they were told. Almost exactly. At any rate, they retraced their steps and exited the enchanted classroom without a word.

....

Malachi took a small, steadying breath after the Slytherin left, reminding himself not to get any sort of way about the events of the last three minutes. He would be seeing them later for detention. Until then, there was really no need to pursue things further.

He would move on.

Ash wasn’t angry all the time... she was mostly just angry at Trent. She was never mad at Kayne. He was her bestie. And... ”Violet!” She smiled at her too. While she was not sure that the other girl liked or understood her, she’d always enjoy having Violet around. She was kinda calming, to be honest.

...Which was good. Calming was very very good, because Ash was now the opposite of happy. She was un-happy, which was predictable considering she was around Trent. Trent... she did not like him. Why? Because he was kicking her best friend out of class. It didn’t matter to her if Kayne was breaking the rules. He was her friend, and therefore it couldn’t possibly be a good day without him there. Even if it was irrational to get upset at being away from her friend for five minutes. Ash really really wanted to say a LOT of things, but she knew she’d just get herself in trouble.

So. She took some deep breaths. She clenched and unclenched her fists a few times. She wiggled her toes. She genuinely smiled and waved at Christian, then Tadhg. Ahhh. She felt quite a lot better now. She looked at Kayne. “Don’t take too long, Vice President.” She turned back to class, reminding herself to not get upset. She felt upset. She took some more deep breaths and tugged on her bracelets. Calm. Down.

“If I were in the forest on a planned excursion, I’d be worried about being abandoned and getting surrounded by acromantulas.” She paused. Had Trent heard about that time? “If I were cornered by more acromantulas than I could reasonably fight, I would try and trick or distract them. Hopefully using magic, but if I had to I could always scream and point in the other direction, then run when they aren’t looking.” What? Screaming and pointing was actually very effective sometimes. It wasn’t the best answer in the history of the universe, but it’d have to do. She was TRYING to keep calm... she really was. She was SO calm. She was answering the question as best she could. Please let that be enough.

Very apt of her to mention that particular creature. The Headmaster nodded...though slowly....trying to figure the entire logic behind the Ravenclaw's statement.

"While...I'm not certain why you'd go on an expedition with people harbouring the potential to abandon you, you make a valid point--especially in this forest." Not literally the one they were in, but the one down on the grounds. "It pays to always keep your guard up. Constant vigilance."

But she had to double check, she wouldn’t put it past crazy professor Trent. She looked back at her friends for a little back up but she knew the only one that would say anything was Victoria.

"Yes....though in the scenario, we don't necessarily mean the Forbidden Forest and it would be assumed it was a sanctioned expedition." But he did appreciate the fact the girl was starkly against the idea, even in an imagined scenario. It was a good look.

"One would be left to wonder why it was forbidden, which could already hint at danger in itself so you're not wrong."

The smile on her face at the response from Trent was infectious. Yes, she absolutely could teach these students a thing or two about being presentable in class. She looked around at everyone, still grinning, expecting her peers to be all “WOOOOWWWW” at her awesomeness.

No such luck.

There would be ENDLESS worries about entering the Forbidden Forest, her main being the creepy crawlies… but she was aware that tiny bugs would be the least of her concerns. She agreed with everyone who spoke before her - getting lost, getting eaten by Acromantulas. She shuddered at the thought of those. “All forests are scary and threatening,” let alone the Forbidden Forest, “I would make sure I had a light source, to make sure there weren’t any dangerous plants in my path.” It was kind of a guess that the forest would be full of those.

"Plants, yes. Many are too busy worrying about creatures to remember that there are several species of flora that also enjoy the taste of flesh. A good observation there." This one was on a roll. It might have shown if the lighting in the room...er...forest was better.

"Of course, that isn't to say one shouldn't be concerned about creatures when in a forest, but the flesh eaters are lurking, too."

Did he regret it? Not for a second. As Ollie joined as well, Evan offered the same smile and the smallest of waves. "Nice to see you, Ollie. We should catch up later." Because he'd certainly been concerned about her over summer and just wanted to check in.

He couldn't help but watch with mild interest as not one, but two students were asked to leave class and return later due to appearance. It certainly seemed this term was off to an early start on troublemaking, having also noticed the points loss - though not the actual event that transpired the evening before.

But class was soon starting and he turned his attention again to Headmaster Trent as the first question was posed. His hand went up, and he waited patiently until his name was called upon. "I agree that the lack of vision would be the first and foremost concern. There is Lumos to light up the situation," Such as one of the Flamsteed twins had already used, though for the life of him he wouldn't have been able to discern if it was the one afraid of cows or the other. "But there's also a night vision charm that could help to see if anything is in the immediate vicinity." Which would cover one sense. "Vision doesn't always have to be the main reliant though either, I think taking a moment to listen to see if there if you can hear anything coming upon you also can give awareness to whether or not you need to be immediately ready to defend."

While Nam had mentioned the lighting charm, it was the latter that got the Headmaster's attention.

"As some of your classmates mentioned, turning the lights on might make you a large target for everything lurking in the forest. Something that allowed you to improve your vision without compromising your position, like you've mentioned, would actually be the preferable option. Afterall, many things that lurk in the dark already have superb vision." So they began at a disadvantage.

He asked her.

Given the speech, this visual forest was going to be replicating some intense dangers. He blinked a few times at the first question, of course it will be dangerous with the creatures and all but what else would he be worried about? ".. I'd wonder about what sort of food there is to eat and where to sleep without something sneaking up on me." How to handle this though, "Thing with looking for food is some creature will want you to share or just decide to eat you as well. So I guess I'd have to be prepared with protection charms and defense all around."

Another response that pleased the Headmaster for how off the beaten track it was. "You will need to ensure you can find suitable ways to take care of yourself while in a forest, yes. As I've said, you don't want to succumb to exposure and need to be prepared to sustain yourself on such trips."

So yes, it would be a good idea to know where your food would be coming from ahead of time.

Claudine decided that she’d rather deal with them over acromantulas. “I’m okay,’’ she whispered to Darius albeit somewhat nervously. “Hoping there're no acromantulas around…” So far, the coast was clear. “Oh hi, you,” the Snakette greeted the tall and gorgeous Heath. Naturally, no words had to be said about her reluctance to be here; the boyfriend understood it all. She nodded with a forced smile.

She almost jumped out of her skin when the door banged shut but Claudine reached for her wand and gripped it reassuringly. Her free hand went up. “I’d be afraid of creatures attacking me.” Exactly what she was feeling now, actually. Except that she sort of trusted Trent not to be that cruel. “To protect myself, I’d have my wand at the ready and have a few protection spells around me.’’

Malachi nodded. "Yes. It's only natural to assume, when entering a forest, that you will not be alone. Nature, afterall, is the home of most creatures and plants." The latter being a mention from Gaeltheos. "Knowing that, it would definitely be advised to have your wand at the ready and a few protection spells on hand."

Because was he THAT night blind?! but he did not utter a word for the Headmaster had chosen that moment to reprimand some students.

Daniel turned around, interested to see who was brave enough to break the rules in front of the Headmaster himself. Everyone knew that if you broke rules you did not do it in front of the professors. His dark brown eyes saw Kayne not wearing his school uniform. Wow.... He wasn't certain if that was brilliant or foolish.

Up ahead, he also saw the figure of Nemesis leaving the classroom. He was still intrigued by the older Slytherin. His curiosity had grown even more during the summer holiday when he had talked about his first year at Hogwarts and he had naturally mentioned Upstead's name. He had never seen his older brother get angry so fast. He had looked as if he had been ready to punch something but instead, he had been warned to never talk to Nemesis ever again before he had left the dinner table without further explanation. WHY couldn't he talk to them? WHAT had happened? He had so many questions.

Daniel turned back around before he raised his hand in the air. "Maybe dangerous footing?" he guessed. "You could slip or fall if you are not careful where you walk, right?" he had never walked in a forest before and the pathways on the grounds probably didn't count but he could imagine people tripping over rocks or branches. "Uhm...I would look at the ground a lot to see where I'm stepping and if it's too dark I would use Lumos to light my path..." Like Atlas (Aries? Atlas? ) had done earlier. "I would also learn some basic healing charms before going on a planned excursion" He didn't know any healing spells right now though but maybe he could ask Claudine later?

"Very true. Thank you for bringing it up, Yoon." It was another danger easily forgotten when one considered the grander stage of danger that could be set before you.

"Especially when conditions are less than optimal for sight. You could twist your ankle the wrong way and find yourself all the more vulnerable for it. You could fall into a trap set by a creature or earlier explorers." There were a number of things that could happen when you were on unsure ground.

"One would hope you wouldn't approach a forest without protection." He replied, a brow raising for a moment as he took in the Gryffindor girl. "A wizard should always have their wand, even if they've mastered wandless magic. You never know what might happen."

On the bright side, at least no points were deducted... yet.

When Trent posed his first question to the class, everyone seemed to be mentioning needing light and using Lumos. But wouldn't that attract the attention of less than friendly creatures? And Ash... well Ash seemed to need to talk to someone more about this whole acromantula thing.

"Being able to see while inside the forest is definitely important but so is setting up camp. If you intend on being there for more than a night, it's important to have a heat source and some protection charms for your campsite," Maya offered. "While in there, the best way to protect oneself may be to try remain undetected from all the creatures lurking around. There's the disillusionment charm which would help."

"I like where you've gone with that, Nam. Depending on how long you intend to remain in the forest, you could be in danger of being left exposed if you can't find yourself a good spot to make base camp. Between the elements and the creatures, you could really be in for a rough time." Wandering aimlessly through a forest was never recommended.

"I would caution just as much care when disillusioned, however. Many creatures have excellent smell." Some didn't even rely on vision.

She and Daniel had had some interesting conversations as of late, and while she didn't feel the INTENSE HATRED in her heart for him that she had felt last year, he did make her feel uneasy. She shot him a LOOK before greeting Ollie with a wave.

Honestly werewolves? Was Daniel Yoon right? The thought made V shiver. They seemed so scary! ;___;

She also took note that LISA NAM chose to stand by Remy. Interesting. Why didn't she come stand by V? With her SIBLINGS? It made her feel yucky. Maybe Lisa didn't want to be friends anymore....had she done something to upset her????

She reacted the only way she knew how - scoffing at no one in particular so Lisa wouldn't know that SHE was the cause of the scoff.

But her eyes turned a little brighter when Headmaster Trent answered her question, and she nodded eagerly. "Can't have that. Running into the wall, I mean," she answered back rather curiously, not catching Trent's near slippage there. What she DID catch, though, were TWO WHOLE SLYTHERINS being sent out because they were deemed too sloppy. UM.

HELLO SNAKES.

Nem was one of them?! REALLY? It made her mad. SO MAD THAT HER FACE TURNED RED. And they were lucky they didn't lose points for that!!!!!!

She listened to her classmates give all sorts of answers, and what she did NOT appreciate was the SASS that Max Evans gave to Ollie. V squinted her eyes in his direction, and the ONLY reason she didn't give HIM attitude was because he was a first year. He would learn in time, hopefully. "Well, to go off of what my DEAR FRIEND OLLIE said, I think it DOES depend on what kind of forest. If its name has something like FORBIDDEN in it, it would be scary just upon entering. So the circumstances have to be...thought of, you know? If it's a bright and friendly and inviting forest, my worries might be different. But if you're talking about THIS ONE - " she took a breath and a pause, dramatically, "I would say wolves. Wolves live in forests, right?" and maybe she was still thinking about Yoon's mention of werewolves ;__;

"To be fair, Gellar," Malachi countered, not missing the little twinge of tension between those younger Slytherins. "Any forest can look dark and foreboding at night, even if they're warm and friendly and inviting in the morning so I wouldn't use that as a marker for danger."

To be clear, he wasn't picking sides, just picking her brain. "There are portions of the Forbidden Forest that looked quite pleasant during the day, even with the comparatively dimmer lighting." Calm, serene, you'd never know the place was a death trap.

She shuddered, remembering that least favourite class.

But generally? Dangers of forests? Getting lost, which she'd heard a first year (Max) mention. Not only was it back to be stuck unexpectedly in a forest, if you were on a trail or something and wandered off, there were more likely to be dangerous plants or animals off the trails. She raised her hand. "I'd make sure I had a map and a compass, to avoid getting lost," Margaret said. "Any of these other dangers would be harder to avoid or escape if you don't know where you are, or how to get out of the forest in an emergency. Or...I think there's a compass charm? So your wand acts like the compass?" Not that she knew what it was called, exactly. Hiking with her family wasn't exactly a magic-friendly activity.

"Exactly." Malachi replied. "If you don't know where you're going, you could easily walk yourself into the lair of whatever you may be trying to avoid. You could end up in a rough area with poor footing, too." The Hufflepuff wasn't wrong when she said getting lost made it all the worse.

As for their Headmaster's question. Um. Kinsay didn't like speaking in his class. For Reasons. But. Um. She didn't want to get into any trouble AND when Max spoke, it catalyzed the Kinsay Curiosity. Curiosity was hard to shake. So instead, she raised her hand timidly. "Just because you can go in, doesn't mean you should," she wasn't arguing with him, only pointing out facts.

But also. "How come there aren't barriers to stop people from going into the forbidden forest? Wouldn't it make more sense to draw an age line or ... or something else so that people can't just go in whenever they want?" Then they wouldn't have to worry about scary things coming out to eat them AND they wouldn't have to worry about students venturing inside either. It made logical sense so.

"You shouldn't need a magical barrier to do what you're told." The Headmaster answered, giving a cursory glance about him to make sure the others were listening. "You shouldn't need someone constantly behind you or setting up intricate charms in order for you to exercise self preservation. There aren't just man eating creatures in there and there are times, when supervised, that students need to go in there for a lesson. Outside of those times, school aged students such as yourselves really shouldn't need a babysitter." And that was all he was going to say on that.

"I'm glad you wouldn't hurry to cast lumos, Nam." Truly, he was, for all the reasons she and her classmates had mentioned. By now it went without saying that lumos in a dark forest full of potential dangers was not always the best choice. That they were getting that for themselves was promising.

The Headmaster nodded when the Slytherin offered up her response. "There's strength in numbers. It would be wise to keep a watch for each other's back, make it less likely you'll be snuck up upon."

When the last of them had finished offering up their ideas, it was time to move the class along to the next question. Each was bringing them closer to the inevitable and the man was in no rush, but the show must go on.

"You've all raised some good points. Key takeaways? Don't always be so quick to cast lumos." As one Flamsteed had done. "Make sure you know where you're going, getting lost is dangerous. Creatures aren't the only things that will eat you, be careful of the plants, too. Use your numbers and remain vigilant with protective charms as needed." Again, some solid points. It made Malachi wonder why the students began to malfunction every time they were put into actual situations.

It...did not compute.

"Today, we will specifically be looking at a creature most of you have no doubt encountered before. For now, I'd like you to tell me just what you think makes an acromantula as dangerous as it is. What's that one quality, over everything else that makes it something you don't want to run into?"

OOC: The next question is up! I'll probably move it on a little sooner than 24 hrs but that'll depend on my schedule for tomorrow. Can't wait to read the responses!

Oooooh Giant spiders. Max was afraid of spiders, he admitted. He raised his hand.
"That they are always in large groups and that they are large man eating spiders."
Okay, so the last one was kind of a "duh" answer but yeah. You wouldn't want to run into one or a few.

Well, he certainly felt silly for not having considered Lumos to have been a bad thing in a dimly lit forest, but as his peers pointed out and the Headmaster concerned, the night vision charm probably would have been better since it would have been undetectable by potential foes in the forest. He made mental note of that, as he had not pulled out any notes due to the rather strange setting they were in.

Question number two was posed, and Evan raised his hand to provide response and waited until his name was called upon before offering anything. The quality that made you most want to not stumble upon one? Outside of the fact they were... you know, giant man eating spiders. "Acromantulas are incredibly vicious creatures, they secrete a venomous poison from their pincers."

Seemed a good reason to him to stay away. Though he was beginning to wonder if the Headmaster had other ideas on that given the nature this discussion was taking...yikes.

It was especially jarring to Apollo to find himself in a room that resembled the Forbidden Forest that morning, considering he hadn't exactly remembered going out to the grounds?? Had he been sleep-walking? No, it was just illusion. But strange indeed considering the headman's warnings the prior night about going into the forest and yet now they were in a controlled forest?

First danger that crossed his mind though: Tripping over branches/tree stumps/his own feet/etc. Seriously. Falling could really throw one off course. Be careful of the plants. Don't be quick to cast light. Solid points that in theory worked, but sometimes theory didn't always compute into the actual world when you had to think quickly.

"Acromantulas always seem to have an appetite for lost humans." Really, he didn't want to run into a hungry spider. "They're intelligent creatures that can counter any argument with their insatiable appetites."

NOOOOOOOOO.

Remy could quite handle the flesh eating plants - but Acromantulas? That would be one of her biggest fears. She felt herself getting clammy as she started to panic, shooting a SAVE ME look at Atlas. Or perhaps it was just a HOLD ME look, because she had a feeling Trent was the type to lock them in a room full of them. Her eyes then desperately darted to Lisa who was also next to her. Plenty of people to hold onto, good.

They’re quick, so it would be difficult to outrun them on foot…” so impending doom. Was it hot in here???? Suddenly her robes felt 2000 layers too thick. Sheepishly raising her hand again, “You’re not going to show us a real one, are you?”

PLEASE MAY WE BE EXCUSED.

For someone as nervous as Atlas could be, one would think that his sense were more acute and sensitive to his surroundings. It was, after all, an evolutionary advantage and adaptation that weaker mammals had earned over time to combat against the predators of the area. And yet, here was the third year, an evolutionary conundrum, being entirely taken by surprise by Remy when she slinked up out of the enchanted darkness and to his side into the wand light. Sort of like when you held a flashlight under your chin while telling a scary story, sort of. So there was a small jump and twitch of the shoulders, but a smile setting in soon enough along with a soft 'hey'.

Remy always knew how to stroke his ego in just the right amount which was to say any and all amount. He was always a bit of a proud peacock whenever she was around and he liked that feeling.

Soon enough, however, the headmaster had his attention and he was simply nodding at what was said in response to his question. Sometime in the future was all the third year was asking for and with four more years came four more chances for it to happen. SO. Holding you to that maybe, headmaster. Though he was also well aware that when adults promised a maybe it was really no promise at all. Still, a little Gryffindor could hope.

And speaking of stroking egos, he caught Remy's answer being about light. Yes. Thank you. Atlas Flobberworm Flamsteed was ahead of the curve while also being about 50 yards behind. But before he could appreciate the subtle back rub or even think to offer the headmaster a response to their question (which would probably be food and a water source since if he was dropped off in some forest somewhere...he was probably stuck there for a while and was gonna need something to survive), the headmaster was telling Nemesis Upstead to leave. The Gryffindor's mouth hung open and then closed and opened again. But...hadn't...what...why... Last night at the feast had been hurtful and weird...but now kicking the Slytherin out of class and denying an education on the day?! Also...isolated them again... He frowned and looked at the light on his wand and just kept quiet. And speaking of feeling ostracized and made to look stupid ... he DID catch all the jabs regarding having a lit wand in the forest and the embarrassment that came with that - no one else had a lit wand so, YA KNOW - caused his shoulders to hunch and he muttered a sheepish Nox to put the light at the tip of his wand out.

Was it shocking to anyone that his marks in this class were not the best? Mastering theory and spells was not exactly how his self preservation kicked in.

Aaaaand speaking of questionable self preservation...DID THE HEADMASTED JUST SAY ACROMANTULAS?! His blue eyes were practically sparkling with excitement. Sure, they were giants that happened to have a taste for human flesh, but it wasn't like it was in their nature to go hunting down humans and eating them. If you happened into their nest and disturbed their place of residence, anyone would be a little upset about that and want to lash out. Not to mention they were a protective species as they were designed by wizarding kind to be guards.

...which brought Atlas to his answer, so cue a hand up.

"They were designed by wizardingkind and are not something found naturally. Maybe a product of hubris, thinking that witches and wizards were above nature...so kind of some karma that they like to eat us and can use human speech against us," he shared thoughtfully and almost as though he admired the irony of the twist. "They were created before the Ban on Experimental breeding, after all...and were breed to be fierce and protective...and sure, you can say that about a lot of creatures, but fewer were designed and created by wizardingkind to, potentially, serve just one purpose and that is to guard an area and rip apart any trespassers."

Spiders! YAY! He wished Araneus could talk too.

For once in his short Hogwarts career, Atlas hardly seemed to flinch nor be afraid of the topic of today's lesson.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

There were a lot of good ideas floating around Claudine thought as she gazed nervously around. She did her best to try to remember the majority of them. With all her might, she hoped that today’s lesson would be about werewolves or any other creature other than…

That.

The seventh year tried not to look too terrified as she stared at Trent. Did he not know that acromantulas were her worst fear? It was her Boggart. Oh dear Merlin. She was screwed. The last time she’d encountered the creatures, she’d totally frozen up and almost become arachnid chow. Who knows what would happen today, even if Trent brought in fake acromantulas.

Claudine had been about to mention the fact that acromantulas ripped people apart but one of the Flamsteed boys beat her to it. What other answer could she volunteer? Um… “They can be merciless,’’ she volunteered dully. “They won’t care about how much you plead of them to leave you alone.”

ACROMANTULAS? Cooool. They weren’t as cool as lizards in her mind (she had an obvious bias towards lizards because of Pascal) but still a creature she didn’t want to run into out in the forest. They could be dangerous but could they be reasoned with? She had heard that Acromantulas were capable of human speech. So id they were capable, could they be reasoned with? Certainly not if they were hungry. She’d surely be dinner but hopefully she’d be one of their last choices cause she’d be the disappointing meal chicken wing in the basket of food. Maybe that could be her survival technique?

Acromantulas were social creatures but scary. Though that being said, if raised by a creature or a human, it’d be possible to earn their respect like what Hagrid had done. It’d be a technique that would take a while but one that perhaps would prove invaluable over time. However, that point was moot when they were discussing casually running across an Acromantula.

I wouldn’t want to run into them cause their pincers’ venom is highly toxic.

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

WHY acromantulas? Just WHY??? Ash didn’t like acromantulas at all. “When you see one acromantula, there are probably a bunch more nearby. I bet I could fight one acromantula, but definitely not five or ten or six hundred fifty three. And despite what you said about it not being a setup, realistically it probably would be. Why else would I be in a forest full of acromantulas? So I’d probably be alone, which makes me less likely to win in a fight.” Acromantulas = setup. It was just a fact. “...are we going to meet acromantulas today, professor?” And there was only one right answer to this. And the right answer was ‘no.’ It didn’t matter that Trent wasn’t the one who abandoned her in the first forest of acromantulas. The other guy looked exactly the same!!!

At the Headmaster's mention that he liked where she was going with that, Maya's heart swelled with happiness. Which instantly deflated at the mention of acromantulas. She had read enough about them to know that she did not exactly want to meet one - unless they were dead. She had heard their venom sold for quite a galleon and that was the best time to harvest it.

So the young Slytherin shuffled back slightly to hide just the slightest little bit behind her brother. Not completely since she didn't want to appear like she was a baby. She was just slightly scared at the prospect of facing off a giant eight-legged, furry, poisonous spider that had liking for human flesh and could talk. And everyone else's answers to the question did not make her feel any better about it.

And Ash brought up a good point about how they were never alone. They were always in colonies. "They eat their own kind once they die, regardless of their stance in their colony, and wouldn't hesitate to eat one of us alive," Maya volunteered. Which only added to how terrifying they could be - humans mourned the death of their leaders and those who they grew up with. There were creatures who did the same. But not having any attachments emotionally like that? Acromantulas were basically psychopaths.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Daniel wished he could take some notes but since it was pretty dark and kind of awkward to write something down while standing, unless there was someone who’d offer their back he could use. But there probably was none.

He did notice V taking a step away from him and as she gave him a LOOK, Daniel rolled his eyes. Whatever. He didn’t HATE her as much as a few months ago but he still felt annoyed around her.

Hearing that they were going to be learning about acromantulas, the Hufflepuff snapped his head back to the Headmaster. Was he serious? Giant spiders?! He wasn’t afraid of spiders but those? A shiver came over him as he thought about acromantulas coming after them.

”Uhm. My answer was their poison but others had already mentioned that so I’m going to say that they’re also capable of human speech so they can pretend to be hurt somewhere in the forest. Most humans would help someone in danger so they’ll be lured into a trap” that was what he would do if he was a giant spider. ”….We’re not REALLY going to see them, right Professor? They’re just…illusions like the rest of this room …right?”

Not that he was nervous. HA HA he was

Acromantulas? Now Jordyn wasn’t particularly afraid of spiders, little, normal sized ones. Giant man eating acromantulas were another thing all together. Is that what they would be facing in her very first Hogwarts lesson? This was something the Hufflepuff was not looking forward to. She supposed that it was better to face them in a class situation, to be prepared and hopefully never have to encounter one in real life.

When the second question was asked, Jordyn raised her hand. ”There are spells that you can use to fight off acromantulas…….but since they tend to travel in large packs, it’s pretty unlikely that you can get them all before they get you. That would make them super dangerous in my book.” All the more reason not to travel alone in the forest, or any other dangerous location for that matter.

Dahlia couldn't help but let her gaze shift slowly from the trees all around them to the moon up in the sky and back again. Dark and ominous used to very much have been her thing. Exploring had always been in her nature, it was very much a family trait. Camping, hiking, being outdoors.. she knew this stuff. From the creatures to the plants. Not only did she read about it but she lived it, learned about it all up close. So why was she standing so close to Tadhg she probably looked like a frightened little child? Well how could she not, when this place had the word 'Forbidden' already in its name.

Yes, that made her want to explore and know all that she could about the forest but is also made her know better than to do what she wanted to do. She had heard the stories. Knew of all the horrors that happened in there.. erm in here? Whatever. Lia stepped closer to Tadhg as the question about what to do in an unknown forest came up. Obviously she could've answered, listed every single thing her peers had and likely than some but they were already moving on.

Acromantula.

That's all she heard. Immediately she found herself slowly glancing around for any sight of them. For sight of anything really. As interested as she was about any and all creatures even one that towered over her with eight long legs, poisonous pincers and a hunger for humans, she wasn't in a rush to go off finding one. Slowly she raised her hand. "The female can lay up to a hundred eggs at a time.. each being about the size of a beach ball." That's a ton of really large babies!

At least Headmaster Trent seemed to acknowledge that she was alert and attentive. Bella was looking around at the trees and listening to the sounds of the wind when the lesson started and Bella raised her hand to answer. "Not being able to see where you put your feet or what is what is waiting behind a tree is the first danger in a dark forest I think of, that I can solve by casting lumos with my wand. I'd use a map if the forest has one to not get lost amongst the trees and paths. Also casting Protego for instance is good if you want to protect yourself against dangerous creatures that inhabit the forest. I'd have my wand near by." Especially if she went into a forest like the forbidden forest alone.

No! Why did they have to look at spiders? Shuddering, but trying to hide her fear of them Bella raised her hand to answer the next question. "I think the acromantulas are XXXXX rated because they unlike few other creatures are so cannibalistic. They have no qualms about eating their own dead or human flesh." She could have added about the human speech, hunting in packs of thousands and highly toxic venom, but Headmaster Trent had said to just name one quality so she had fulfilled the question. Seeing Apollo nearby Bella quietly moved over to stand near him. If they were going to face acromantulas she wanted to be with her BFF for the activity.

HA. Eden Tilly wasn't born yesterday. It was her third time 'round this whole "first day of classes" thing, so she knew that start of terms were ripe with potential trauma. She'd believe that this was a simple demonstration when she was back in her tower wearing fuzzy socks and reading Brewer's Digest.

Yet she stood up straighter as the Headsman continued on speaking, a definite gleam of excitement in darkly-lined eyes. Acromantulas were xxxxx-lethal, and (probably as a result of their wizard-killing nature) their venom went for over 100 galleons a pint.

"Acromantulas live in huge, relatively sophisticated colonies with an established hierarchy. They're organized." And wicked smart, poisonous, angry. Taller than her, most likely. She looked around the not-room as if expecting one to pop out.

The rest of the class seemed to be really bothered by the opportunity to see and interact with a real Acromantulas. But Ollie was a bit excited. Well, she was nervous because these creatures were really dangerous but she was a bit excited to see one in real life. She had read about the spider-like thing before and ran through her brain to pick a fitting answer. It seemed that every answer she landed on was already pointed out (i.e. pincers, the colony and organization of the spider, etc.) so she decided just to agree with a classmate. “I agree with Eden. The way they are so organized is very scary because it shows how smart they really are. And on top of that the way they are like three times the size of us doesn’t make them any less scary. It’s like they’re a very strategic giant who is also poisonous… ”

A little chill ran down her spine. She was definitely more scared of encountering one now that she remembered all the facts about the Acromantulas. Was it too late to join Nem and get kicked out? Wait, no. She was way braver (er, more brave?) than that.

As Victoria listened to Trent, she nodded and supposed he had a point. Looks could be deceiving is what he was getting at. Which was fair. And her moment of clarity was interrupted, RUDELY, by the mention of ACROMENTULAS. V shivered at their mere mention, and she found herself stepping closer to Ollie, who seemed much less fearful than she. Ollie actually seemed excited! V didn't quite get it! They were scary!

Atlas had a whole lot to say that V wasn't familiar with, and his description made her...swallow. Ugh. Would they have to meet one of these giant spiders? Oh, she would positively scream!

She didn't even notice Daniel Yoon's slightly tremble to his voice. She was too busy inwardly FREAKING OUT. "Um......I think they're scary because spiderwebs humansized are scary. I wouldn't want to get caught in a giant spiderweb. They're sticky...and...lead to you being...a meal." She squeaked that last part.

Though she usually enjoyed looking around during class, Kins wasn't really in the mood for distractions today. So she kept herself close to Phoebe and paid very little attention to anyone else - especially mean third years (with anger issue) (and an affinity for trouble) (and terrible manners) who rolled their eyes at (innocent) (not-incessant) people. Kinsay had missed it. Fortunately.

What she didn't miss, however, was the tone with which the Headmaster answered her questions. It made her feel really silly. And super embarrassed. And all sorts of small. She always felt small around Headmaster Trent. But especially when he spoke to her like this.

So she had even less desire to answer the second question. But she also didn't want to get into trouble and she also, also didn't want to be spoken to in that condescending way again. So. Um. Kinsay James was once again at a crossroads. Timidly, she half-raised her hand, almost hoping that their Headmaster would miss it and skip her turn. "They almost ate my best friend one time." That was enough reason for Kins to AVOID at all costs. It was when they were really little, but sometimes Kins still had nightmares about Emm getting snatched up by giant spiders. Also. She had another question. It was a relevant one though, if that helped. "Do kids taste better to them than adults?" Because if they did, then that was another reason to avoid them. Kins didn't want to end up being spider dinner.

Ivy was...a little apprehensive about the focus of the lesson turning to Acromantulas. If they had to encounter any, it would probably be an illusion like the rest of this forest, she assumed, but it would probably still feel real, so that would be...interesting. She was gonna try to not think about that too much yet though. Time to just focus on the discussion first.

She raised her hand. "I think their size is one of the things that makes them so dangerous. Even small venomous creatures can be deadly, but when it's something bigger than you that can overpower you, that makes it even scarier."
