Default Potions Lesson 2: Identifying Potions

It's a fresh, dewy spring morning as you make your way across the Grounds for Potions. A light breeze rustles through the budding trees, and the sun gently warms the grass. The perfect weather for an outdoor lesson.

When you arrive, you'll see a large obstacle course, consisting of various monkey bars, seesaws, balance beams, and hoops. Shreya stands next to a wooden table at the starting line, arranging various potion vials according to their labels.

There are no chairs to be seen, so just take up a standing spot for now. The lesson will begin shortly.

OOC: Welcome, welcome! Thanks for coming to our second IC lesson. As always, please familiarize yourself with the classroom rules before posting. We will begin in approximately 24 hours.

Lesson Progression:
Main Activity: Select a potion and complete the obstacle course.
Q1: What potion do you think you consumed?
Q2: What are some ways we can identify potions?
Mini Activity: Use Scarpin's Revelaspell to identify an unknown potion.

He quickly down it, ready for the obstacle course! First he jumped up onto the balance beam then ran all the way to the end before he could fall off, nearly losing his balance in the process. But he was fast enough to counteract his about to fall apparently. Next were the monkey bars and jumped right on as climbing was his favorite!
As you make your way across the monkey bars, you feel a slight tingling spread across your limbs. It starts as a pesky itch on the sole of your foot, then as a feather-like prickling sensation on your kneecap. But before long, your entire body feels as if it's being tickled all over. Hope you can stifle those laughs—it might be tricky to complete the course now that you have a violent case of the tickles.

Perhaps you should have taken a closer look at those vials...that certainly was no Strengthening Solution.

You're about halfway across the monkey bars when a sudden haze comes over you. Instantaneously unsure of where you are or what you're doing here, you may be a bit bewildered. Not to mention that your classmates and professor are now unrecognizable to you. Do you even remember how to get across the rest of those monkey bars?

Well, at least there's one positive to the situation: You've forgotten what vial you drank from, so there's no way to know that you actually ingested a forgetfulness potion. Ahh, ignorance is bliss...for now.

Skipping over all the actual boring, learning parts of it all, they could actually get to do the main work. Not to brag, but the hazel eyed Mordrake boy was fairly decent when it came to obstacle courses too. That was because of his quick thinking nature, and cleverness. Sometimes rules were just meant to be broken or bent into such a way that it's still not technically breaking it; and from the looks of things there wasn't going to be much on rules to actually running the course itself.

Striding over to the desk with all the potions laid out, Kayne immediately reached for the one that actually rang some bells in his head; the Exstimulo Potion. Downing it, he now knew that one of his spells would be empowered, which could potentially give him a huge advantage when it came to this. Whenever something came in between Kayne and a goal that couldn't be achieved physically, he tended to use magic. So taking that potion should help a lot.

Momentarily after taking the potion, Kayne walked over to the first obstacle, some hoops that they had to jump through. Knowing there was no way that he'd be able to jump through one by simply just jumping, he backed up a few paces to get a running start. A few tense seconds went by as the surprisingly athletic fashionista jogged in place. Then, at the drop of a dime, he took off in a full sprint to build up momentum. At the very last second, Kayne Mordrake took the leap of faith, and made it through the hoop! To stick the landing, the boy did an action roll, ready to face the next obstacle.
Whether you consciously chose to drink this particular potion or simply got lucky, we'll never know. But congratulations, as you've chosen the actual exstimulo potion. You'll soon feel a significant boost in your magical strength. Maybe you should try out a spell or two? Now that your wizarding abilities are heightened, your casts should be more than successful.

The Snakette couldn’t agree more with Varma; it was great to have a Potions lesson outdoors. Her dark gaze followed the woman then moved to the vials, which were so attractive with their colours. An eyebrow arched as she took in the instructions. Indeed this was all very interesting and unusual.

Claudine opted for the deep red potion - the Wit Sharpening potion and soon was downing that potion. Right. She was ready for the course now, yes?
Hmm, perhaps you really could use an intelligence-boosting potion next time...because knowledge would have told you that a Wit-Sharpening potion was never blood-red in color. As you begin the course, your mouth starts moving uncontrollably. Looks like someone's feeling outgoing, because you're chattering nonstop. Words, phrases, sheer nonsense—all of it starts spilling out of your mouth.

Lisa’s eyes darted to the obstacle course. It was like a siren beckoning her to break free from the crowd to go have FUN. Gah. Had to wait for more people and more instructions.

She didn’t have to wait too long thankfully as class began.

So there mission today, if they chose to accept it, was to select a potion and enter the obstacle course. She eyes the many different colours of the potions and realized that she knew a few of them well and the others… err…. not so well. BUT! There was an orange potion so she was naturally drawn to that one because orange was one of her favourite colours. She was about to reach for that potion when she noticed Nem. Huh….. She wondered what they were thinking but she wasn’t sure if she should approach. Daniel seemed to like Nem well enough so perhaps Nem was kind? Lisa wasn’t a hundred percent sure but she knew Nem was intelligent so she paused, wondering what potion he’d pick but he didn’t even go for one.

She turned back to glance at the vials, reaching towards the cloudy orange one, before pausing to look at the shimmering blue vial. She was about to grab that one when she stopped herself and went with her gut. Orange was better. It was an endurance potion and she’d need that… Though perhaps strength would have been wise given her slight frame and fun sized height.

Lisa held the vial in her hand, eying it, before lifting it up to her lips. Lisa lowers it and then looked over to a few of her peers and raised the vial. “Cheers?” she said, hoping that it wasn’t going to be a terrible tasting potion. Once again, she raised the vial to her lips and drank the potion.

A moment later, she was standing in front of the obstacle course and then paused. She raised her hand. “Professor, can we try all the potions and do a trial run with the obstacle course later? It’d be interesting to see what works best…” she mentioned.

But he knew that experiencing potion effects was also an important part of learning, so he did not complain (out loud) as he shuffled over to the table where the vials were.

He did not know what the Girding Potion and Exstimulo Potion were. From the others, he thought that what he needed most was additional strength. In his opinion, he wasn't dumb enough to take a Wit-Sharpening Potion, and as for the Invigoration Draught ... meh. He did not want to be super energetic like Lisa Nam, even though she was nice and all that. So he took a vial of Strengthening Solution, smelled the bubbly yellow liquid, and drank it in one gulp.

... Was he stronger now? The first year waited for his turn in front of the obstacle course, bouncing on the balls of his feet as a warm-up.

This was fine with her, nothing with a bit of agility training and keeping physically fit. It would also help burn off some of the extra energy she usually seemed to have.

Shifting her gaze towards the table of potions at least now she understood where that came into play with the days lesson. Take a potion, drink it and complete the course. It sounded simple enough. A little too simple. Lia was pretty sure something was probably going to happen once she was on that course but there was no real way of knowing.. until she was out there giving it her all.

Walking over to the table, the second year studying each one of the potions in turn. First taking in the colors and then the potions names. Yellow, red, orange, blue and purple. At first glance what she wanted to do without even thinking about it was make a grab for the shimmery sky blue potion. Lately blue held her attention more than most other colors. Looking at the potions name though had her think twice about it. Would she be using spells on the obstacle course?

Was she going to need more strength? Maybe. Wit? Possibly. Endurance? It was a possibility. Energy? Uhh, she had lots of that buuuuuut the color was really pretty. The swirly purple potion had caught her eye almost as much as the sky blue one. Might as well go with the one she liked the best.

Picking up the Invigoration Draught, Lia gave the vial a little swirl before lifting it to her lips and drinking it as quickly as she could. Setting the empty vial down, she was ready to go!

Heading to the first part of the obstacle course it was monkey bars right away. She climbed up and grabbed hold of the first bar, swinging herself a little before making a grab to the next bar. So far, so good.
Is it all that swinging that's making you dizzy, or is it something stronger? Slowly but surely, the world around you starts spinning as the purple-colored draught courses through your body. Better hold on tight to that monkey bar, because you've been struck with a solid dose of dizziness. Darn. That was definitely not an Invigoration Draught.

Wit-sharpening? Hmmm... Her wits were usually pretty sharp already, it was her athletic ability that was wanting. She wasn't very familiar with the Extimulo potion and wasn't about to down an experimental potion without knowing exactly what it did. So--did she need invigorating, strengthening, or 'girding' the most? She wasn't the most energetic in the mornings, but she figured that once she started the course, momentum and sheer doggedness would carry her through all right. She wasn't the most athletic person in the world, so strength would probably be helpful. But--look at all those obstacles in the course.

Violet concluded that endurance would be the best bet here, so she picked up a vial of the cloudy orange potion and lifted it to her lips. Ugh! she wrinkled her nose at the smell, but forced herself to drink it down anyway. Now for the obstacle course! Violet hoped for the best, but didn't expect too much from herself.

But it wasn’t always a smart choice to choose the unknown, so Remy battled her initial judgement. Endurance was tempting… but she felt she had enough of that especially when during a competitive activity like this. They were playing to win, right?

Tying her hair back into a quick, lazy ponytail, Remy grabbed herself a vial vial of Strengthening Solution, gulped it down, and headed straight for the obstacle course. This Gryffindor was READY.

Shreya knew she was in for an interesting turn of events. Truthfully, she felt a bit guilty about the whole thing. She had gone back and forth about whether she should proceed with the lesson. But she figured that practice was the best way to learn. And the students would certainly be getting some practice today.

Ready to watch the show, she settled into the grass next to Nemesis. "You think anyone else will figure it out?" she whispered mischievously. No, Shreya hadn't caught the death glare, but she figured Nemesis was astute enough to pick up on the point of the lesson. Or maybe they were just being their normal, non-participating self.

"Let's see how one potion works out first, dear," Shreya replied to Lisa's question. Then, she leaned back on her elbows, content to watch the plot twists unfold. (But wand still at the ready in case of any emergencies, of course.)

OOC: Duhn duhn DUHNNN. Have fun completing the course now that you know your potion's effect! For anyone just joining us, feel free to still pick a vial. I'll be back on periodically and can update you on your selected brew's effect. We'll move on in about 2.5 days!

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash remembered everything. Usually. But right now, she didn’t know why she was here or who she was with. Or why she was hanging from weird bar things. SOMEBODY WAS MESSING WITH HER MEMORY. But who? She looked around confusedly at everyone else. Who were these people? Why were they laughing? They must have hurt her and wiped her memory... something was very wrong... her fingers started to slip... she caught herself. She couldn’t fall or the bad people would get her. She tried to get on top of the bars, but it was so hard. She had no idea how, but she felt like she should have known? Why was THAT one of the things erased from her mind??? She eventually managed it. She wrapped herself around one individual bar and started to cry. Was this how she was gonna die? Well, if anyone came near her, SHE’D FIGHT THEM. AND WHEN SHE FOUND OUT WHO DID THIS TO HER, SHE’D FIGHT THEM TOO. Was it that mean-looking lady over there who was looking at her? SHE’D FIGHT HER.

Ash pushed her feeling of despair away from her and grabbed on to the only thing that felt familiar- anger and betrayal. They were familiar somehow. And Ash clung to that like a lifeline. She was NOT going to die like this.

Her previous good mood? Forgotten.

She nodded at the Professor and then all of the sudden things became really, really, REALLY HAZY and FUZY- but not in the good way like comfy socks.

Where was she? Outside naturally but in a park? Was she at school or was it the park by her parents house? Was it summertime already? If so, it was a cool summer. She glanced around her at the people surrounding her, becoming more confused as she looked at the students closest to her. Who were these strange people? WHERE WAS HER BROTHER? Uhh the one that wore blue? Where was her sister and Noah??? Her bottom lip wobbled, a telltale sign of tears going to leak over and then all of the sudden she stopped. Why was she about to cry? She couldn’t remember.

She glanced to her left and right before looking ahead of her. Yes, she was outside but what was this mess? This eclectic set of equipment strewn about before her? Lisa did notice the girl in front of her (Ash) who was on the monkey bars. OH! It was a play…. What was that word again? She spent most of her time over the summer at it. Playground? Was that really… what it was called? And were they playing on it. She blinked as she walked slowly towards the hoops almost timidly. She jumped onto one foot and then made her way through it pretending the activity to be like hopscotch. When she neared the end, she stopped in her tracks, wondering what she was doing standing.

Then she just plopped.

It was a really pretty day.

Remy was so ready to muscle her way past all of these absolute amateurs. Lisa, of course, was still a diamond, who she noticed stopping in her tracks but didn’t think too much more on it. Too busy about to win. Before getting too far, she suddenly felt a little uncomfortable. More specifically, her foot was itching. The worst place to get an itch, right?

Remy tried to drag her foot across the ground to get it, but before she could realise it’s effectiveness, she was distracted by tickles ALL OVER. The firstie bent forwards to hold her stomach that felt like it was exploding from excessive laughter. She was such a ticklish person anyway, so this was her idea of absolute torture.

She fell to the ground, rolling around and kicking her feet, trying to kick the tickles away.

Had the Professor SPIKED her potion???? Remy smelled a lawsuit.

But um…

Why was it that seemingly random words and phrases kept coming forth from her mind? This was definitely not Claudine’s doing for she only spoke when necessary. So what in the world? Then it dawned on her. That potion… something was off with it. Had she somehow mistakenly mixed up the potion she had intended to take? Had she instead taken a Babbling Beverage?

Her brain was in a whirl as she leaped over some hurdles. How could she have been so silly to have mistakenly taken the wrong potion? “Quidditch, Muggles might not. Be dinner.” And so the nonsense kept pouring out of her mouth as she continued the course.

Potions outside was certainly a different experience, yet Apollo was present and waiting to see what could possibly be in store with the various activities present. It didn't take too long for the lesson reveal as Varma talked about an obstacle course and using a potion to help them succeed.

He surveyed his classmates - and even made note of Nemesis sitting out? - before looking back at each of the vials. Invigoration draught. Wait, wasn't that supposed to be yellow?? Wit-sharpening might be helpful. He wasn't sure how a strengthening potion would be useful in helping him succeed in an obstacle course. Girding potion... was also used for strength. Which left Exstimulo potion. He wasn't sure exactly what that one did, but the blue potion seemed promising. Without too much more thought into it, the second year downed the exstimulo potion and waited a minute to see any effects.

Rationality unaffected by feeling; a true strength. Evolutionary advantage, really.

Murderous though their glare had been mere moments ago, it had not exactly been born of feeling, only perfectly rational suspicion, considering not only the sort-of-trick but how conveniently timed it all was. So when Varma took up the spot next to them, and when they quietly spoke in response, they were still perfectly casual and mild-mannered. "It's possible." In the name of civility, Nem left it at that.

The fuss some of these kids had been making this year - quietly and not-so-quietly - about the bread and the presence of Healer Peppy, only to go and fall for this. Varma hadn't even been all that subtle about it; most of the labels were misleading, yes, but the potions inside were clearly visible. She'd been so brazen and yet so successful. Clever. Funny, too.

But these kids did not think in the same way they did, that much had always been obvious. "You might have made a few enemies today," they remarked, watching impassively as that one Gryffindor first year rolled around on the ground in a fit of laughter. "Kids here get so touchy." Merlin knew they were unlikely to trust Varma again any time soon, and though that would be wise, it would miss the point.

Nem did not trust her, but they hadn't before either. They didn't trust anyone, and not in that whiny 'the world is out to get me' kind of way, just in the perfectly logical sense that people had big mouths, unpredictable emotions, wavering loyalties, and all the rest. Humans were unreliable and unpredictable, though it made them interesting enough. Regardless, it was a dog-eat-dog world, and that was half the fun.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Heath had just enough time to return Claudine’s smile before the lesson began. Ohh, so that’s how the obstacle course related to potions! He listened intently to the directions, and he had to admit he was more than a little intrigued by the concept of completing an obstacle course under the effects of a potion. HIs curiosity was piqued even more when he overheard Lisa’s question. Was that what they were doing - comparing the effects of different potions? That sounded interesting!

He made his way to the table, pursuing the potion options. Wit-sharpening potion? No, he didn’t think he’d need that one; he was fairly confident in his own wit. Exstimulo potion? Probably not. Judging by the look of the obstacle course, he suspected he’d be able to do it without any spells, and if he did need to use them, he could probably handle it himself. Strengthening Solution? Maybe… but brute strength wasn’t always the best way to go. That left him wit two choices: the Invigoration Draught and the Girding Potion. Ultimately deciding that endurance would be slightly more useful than energy, he selected the Girding Potion.

Heath opened the vial, ready to hold it to his lips, when he noticed something weird. The potion inside was orange, and he was almost certain that the Girding Potion wasn’t supposed to be that color! If he recalled correctly, it should be green… or red. He knew it wasn’t orange, at any rate! His suspicions grew as he glanced toward the course at his classmates… Claudine babbling nonsense, that little Gryffindor girl (Remy) laughing on the ground… and what was up with Lisa? Now he was absolutely convinced something was wrong! Maybe Peeves or someone had switched the labels on the potions as a joke, and the professor hadn’t noticed?

He didn’t know what had happened, but one thing was for sure: he was not drinking whatever was in that vial! Sorry, Professor! Should he say something? He didn’t want to make trouble, but if someone did switch the labels - or Merlin forbid, spike the potions - she should know. Somebody could get hurt! “Excuse me, Professor,” he said. “With all due respect, I can’t drink this because I don’t think this is Girding Potion, as labeled. Girding Potion shouldn’t be this color.” He held up the vial as an example. “Do you think someone could’ve switched the labels?”

A potion's master blood ran through Serena's veins. Her daddy has taught her about potions ever since she could remember. It had all started with her own curiosity. She remembers being four years old and "practicing" her potions brewing with her cauldron toddler set. Then when she was older, Serena would attempt to practice brewing potions, but her mum would get anxious because some ingredients were dangerous.

Now, she was forbidden from trying her potions on her brother. EYE ROLL.

Her love, experience and knowledge of potions is what caused the young Slytherin from taking any of the potions available. She was going for the strengthening potion, but it was wrong. Cloudy baby blue eyes bounced from potion to potion. All but one resembled the potions in her potions book, and the ones her dad taught her.

She clasped her hands behind her back, clearly stating she wasn't going to take any of the potions. "Professor," she said, a small smile playing on her lips. A smile that didn't reach her eyes. "I can't take these. I'm with Heath. Your potions are broken."

Her mum had also advised she not take anything that made her doubt in the first place. Just like the bread.

Lia felt great as she started the obstacle course. Monkey bars weren't really all that difficult. She had been doing these since she was little, no worries here. Pacing herself wasn't a problem and she was doing great making her way steadily from one bar to the next.

The bubbly young Ravenclaw thought she was doing well. Nothing seemed to be slowing her down, not that she was all that fair into the course yet to be tired or anything. She hummed happily under her breath, reaching to grab hold of the next bar just as she had been doing all along.

It was upon reaching about three quarters of the way across that everything began to spin around her. Or perhaps she was the one spinning? No, no, she most definitely wasn't the one spinning. It felt like she was spinning in one direction and everything else around her was spinning the other way. "Whoooooooa...." she exclaimed her body sway in almost a circling motion rather than back and forth like it had been as she now now at at bar above her head as tightly as she could with one hand, her other making flailing grasps for another bar.

What was going on? Why was everything spinning so fast? She was perfectly fine a few moments ago. Dahlia tried to fight through the sudden intense bout of dizziness and grab onto the other bar as well, though it wasn't very firmly. Closing her eyes tightly she tried to will the dizziness away but it was no use.

It was all spinning faster and faster. Whether her blue eyes were open or shut, it didn't matter, the ground quickly raising up to meet her as she lost her grip on the money bars. "Eep!" Lia did her best to land on her feet, monkey bars weren't all THAT high but being extremely dizzy as she was didn't help for anything. Her feet hit the ground first, instantly swayed and promptly fell over, hard onto her right arm.

This is where she remained, refusing to move for fear of the world around her knocking her off of her feet again. Don't mind her, she was just going to lie right here for awhile.

A tingling sensation, which must be the strength entering his veins. Soon he would become much stronger and hopefully, finish first in the obstacle course. This felt like cheating, except it was allowed and even encouraged. Max stretched his arms out, squirmed a little from the unfamiliar sensation, and tried to stifle a giggle - wait, what?

"Aaargh ... haha, haHAHA!" Like Remy, he too fell to the ground and rolled left and right, laughter taking over his usually expressionless features. Every single part of his body was so - darn - ticklish! At first he thought it was a side effect of the Strengthening Potion, but when he realised that he was not in the least stronger than he previously was, and when he saw all of his classmates being WEIRD - crying, babbling, lying on the ground - AND when he heard some people mention that the labels were wrong, he understood what was happening.

And he was annoyed. The Ravenclaw tried to glare at Professor Varma while (still) rolling on the ground in an uncontrollable fit of laughter.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Despite being put off and annoyed by the fact that she had consumed the wrong potion, Claudine was well aware of at least some of what was occurring to classmates that had drunk Varma’s potions. It was slowly dawning on her that this was no mistake. She briefly put her realisation out of her mind in order to focus on getting successfully over a balance board.

Once done, Claudine glanced back at students, especially the ones laughing uncontrollably. They just stood out to her. Did she stand out too, with her endless babble? She tried her best to utter her random words as quietly as possible. But this was getting ridiculous. Claudine was way too distracted not by her babbles to finish the course.

Maybe she was biased because she positively adored Varma but the sixth year did not feel annoyed towards the woman. Just… she wished the babbling would wear off soon. In the meanwhile, she’d just stand in this corner by herself... babbling, of course.

SPOILER!!: Potion Effects & Replies

He surveyed his classmates - and even made note of Nemesis sitting out? - before looking back at each of the vials. Invigoration draught. Wait, wasn't that supposed to be yellow?? Wit-sharpening might be helpful. He wasn't sure how a strengthening potion would be useful in helping him succeed in an obstacle course. Girding potion... was also used for strength. Which left Exstimulo potion. He wasn't sure exactly what that one did, but the blue potion seemed promising. Without too much more thought into it, the second year downed the exstimulo potion and waited a minute to see any effects.

Ahhh, so there were some more-than-astute potioneers among them after all. Although she had to admit she was a bit surprised it took this long for someone to figure it out. "It's certainly possible," Shreya replied plainly with a shrug. She didn't want to give away the point of the lesson—not quite yet. At least not until the effects of everyone's potions started to wear off and they were fully cognizant. "Good observation, Mr. Jones." She nodded proudly at the Ravenclaw. Very good observation indeed.

Her mum had also advised she not take anything that made her doubt in the first place. Just like the bread.
Now that was more like it. And quite shrewd for a first year. Shreya returned the girl's smile with a smirk of her own. "A valid choice," she replied. Although perhaps the Slytherin should take another look. Not all the potions were broken. Only a large majority of them.

Before long, the obstacle course had descended into something resembling chaos. There were Remy and Max hysterically laughing (which did elicit a few chuckles from Shreya), the usually-reserved Claudine babbling nonsense (really, it was the most talkative the professor had ever seen the Slytherin), and Lia flinging around on the monkey bars. And then poor Ashley and Lisa, who looked like they had given up entirely.

Judging from the looks she was getting from some of her students, she figured Nem was right—she most definitely did make some enemies today. "That I did," she replied to the Slytherin plainly, her eyes lingering for a moment on Ashley, who looked positively miserable in the throes of her Forgetfulness Potion. A twinge of guilt settled in her stomach, but she forced herself to swallow it down. Better to learn this now, under controlled circumstances, than out in the real world. With potentially deadly potions. Right? "They'll probably refuse to take a swig of anything in the dungeon again." Not Shreya's goal, obviously. But it could be an unintended consequence of her lesson plan.

A glance at her wristwatch told her that the potions would be wearing off fairly shortly. (She had at least ensured that they were fast-acting brews.) But until then, she remained in her spot on the grass.

OOC: We'll move on in about 12-14 hours!

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash was not one to sit around and wait to die. She’d lived for... for... for... some amount of time without dying, and she wasn’t about to start today! So she looked around bewilderedly, searching for anything remotely familiar. A couple people had good energy, a couple people had bad energy. There was that lady who was older(?) than everyone else. Ash felt awful when she looked at her. She was BAD. But there was also a little girl sitting down. Ash felt protective towards her. L... Lila... Lily... Lisa... Laila... Lydia... who was she? Ash couldn’t remember. But she liked her... they were probably sisters. Sisters? That didn’t sound right. Did she even have a sister? Whatever, this girl sitting on the ground MIGHT be her sister, and that was enough for Ash(was her name Ash? It was, right?) to keep going on the monkey bars. Except... she didn’t remember how to do the monkey bars. She swung on the first bar, and then didn’t know what to do. Then she was flying through the air and somehow had one hand on a monkey bar, dangling above the ground. She just sorta stayed there until she fell all crumpled in a heap. Ouch? Well, this really was the end, huh? But nobody came to kill her.

Ash looked up confusedly. Where was she? What was going on? Who were these people and why were they laughing at her? Did she fall and hit her head? Who was that mean looking lady over there? Where was her sister? Why did she feel so humiliated and angry and betrayed? Had she been crying? Why? She felt scared before she fell... she couldn’t remember anything else... ooh she felt a bruise. Several bruises, actually. She’d just stay here for a while until her memory came back... if it would ever come back... owww.

Why did everything hurt? Where was she? Where was Theodore? Where was her sister who had a name like Laila or Lydia? Who was that mean-looking lady over there...

Dahlia could hear everything going on around her from where she was laying on the ground beneath the monkey bars. All of the chatter, hysterical giggles, words of confusion and something about broken potions. None of it mattered to her right than though. All she was focused on, was the current pain in her arm and elbow and trying not to be sick as the world spun in and out of focus around her.

She wasn't going to cry and she wasn't going to be sick. If everything would just quite spinning now. Lia closed her blue eyes tightly once more in an attempt to will the dizziness away. All she had to do was stay calm, not move and take slow even breaths. Everything would be okay in a few minutes, right?

Once she was okay, than she could worry about everything else. Like what exactly happened. Why no one was helping her.. looking at you Professor Varma (not currently but she would be). And where was her siblings and cousins, why weren't any of them coming to help her? None of this seemed right..

So....what now?

Serena eyed the potions once again. She had figured out the exstimulo potion was the only right one in color. Did she trust it now, though? No. She did not. The Slytherin already came with a "Trust Issues" tag on her shoulder.

Watching the chaos unfold, the redhead observed how easy it was to convince people to do dumb things. Maybe this was a lesson she could take.

But she was bored. Sheee wanted to be doing something. Something with potions. With her own hands. "Are we going to focus on that one?" She looked up at the professor then pointed at the exstimulo potion. You know, since it was the only potion labeled correctly.

Blink, blink. Heath was so confused now! Did Professor Varma know the potions were mislabeled? Had she done it intentionally? He hadn't suspected her at first, but something about that reply - plus the fact that she wasn't doing anything to stop the others' adverse potion effects - made him wonder. More importantly, did she have an antidote to those potions? They couldn't just leave everyone like this!

As he glanced back at the obstacle course, a new set of questions buzzed in his mind. What was he supposed to do now? He wasn't unwilling to participate, just unwilling to drink a mislabeled potion, so he felt like he should be doing something. But what? Try to find a potion that wasn't mislabeled? Complete the obstacle course without a potion? Turning to the professor, he asked, "Is there something else you'd like me to do? Should I choose another potion?"

"It's not so bad." The making enemies thing. Nem survived it just fine. Varma would too. It was true, though, that the dramatics would probably go up a gear, as though a little engagement of the brain wouldn't have prevented this. A little knowledge of potions, that was the thing, but really it went beyond that.

After a dispassionate glance around at the students on and around the obstacle course, Nem leaned back on their hands and looked up instead at Jones and Baltazar-Dos Santos. As little regard as they had for the students who had fallen for the trick, Nem couldn't say their consideration of these students was much different either. No worse, no better, just like with anyone else.

"Maybe focusing on the benefits of recognising potions for what they are, and of paying attention," they said blandly, interjecting to respond to the first year's question that was actually directed at the professor. Already they leaned forward again, instead picking a few long blades of grass to fiddle with. The Headsman was not wrong about idle hands. "Something like that. No need for the trick, otherwise. Professor Varma wouldn't do that unless she was making an important point."

So curious, those two were. Shreya simply sent a knowing, be patient glance toward Heath and Serena. They'd get to the point of the whole thing soon enough, but she wanted the whole class to be a part of it.

Shreya waited a few more minutes before calling the class to order, wanting to allow the potions a few extra minutes to wear off. She needed the students fully alert for this portion of the lesson—even if that did mean she would be on the receiving end of some glares and angry comments.

"Let's all meet back at the starting line, shall we?" Shreya said, pushing herself up from her cross-legged spot on the ground and making her way back to the table of potions. Once everyone was assembled, her eyes swept over them, an unreadable expression painting her face. "Now, I'm sure I don't need to be the one to tell you that most of those potions were...a bit of a surprise, to say the least. What potion do you think you actually ingested instead, and what makes you come to that conclusion?" She was particularly asking those who took any potion except for the Exstimulo potion. Although for those unlucky ones that got a Forgetfulness potion, it might be a little tricky to remember the effects. "And for those of you who didn't take a potion, feel free to guess what any of them really were."

OOC: Time for Q1! Shreya's asking your student to determine what potion they actually drank. You have about 24 hours before we move on, possibly a little longer!

Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?

Ash just sort of laid there for a while, all crumpled like a discarded dishrag. Eventually, she started to remember what had happened, and then she felt angry. The well-meaning professor was probably trying to teach them that there are enemies who will poison you. She was kinda wrong about that, did she know? Ash had never had an enemy trick her like this. Friends, on the other hand... it had happened more than once. What really needed to be said was that there was no such thing as safety, and that nobody can betray your trust if you don't trust them. So. Varma had broken her trust by tricking her like this. Maybe she'd feel guilty about it, but... if she was teaching them to trust nobody, that included her. Lesson learned, apparently. Was it worth it? Maybe. Maybe not.

Ash raised her eyebrow at the professor. "I can't remember." It was true, but there was also a little bit(or a lot) of sarcasm in her voice. Because while she couldn't remember what had happened, she could put two and two together. Her memory didn't just disappear like that. It didn't. She couldn't remember, but she knew.

She tilted her head. What exactly was the point of the lesson? Was it to trust nobody, including authorities and people you thought of as friends? The professor had done a brilliant job of teaching them all that. But that lesson had some unintended consequences. Was the lesson worth it, if some of them refused to ingest another potion in their life(a pity, because Ash's bruises could easily be healed with potions)? Was it really worth it? They'd all have to see. But in the moment, Ash didn't think so.

Her cheeks were soaked with streaming tears, her laughing was starting to hurt her stomach and her throat and it felt like this was lasting forever. Completely unaware of her classmates going through similar horrors, Remy rolled onto her back as the effects of the potion seemed to be easing a little. She stared at the sky as normality kicked in.

She was fuming, of course.

The Gryffindor took a few moments to compose herself, to make sure she hadn’t peed or anything, and then followed the instruction to go back to the starting line, her face still reading rage.

What a dumb question. “I dunno, a laughing potion? It wasn’t very funny.” Little hint of sarcasm there. The Professor had given them the wrong potions. Was this a lesson to look closer at potion properties before drinking? Sorry for trusting the Professor!!!!!

Violet stood uncertainly before the obstacle course, suddenly unsure of where she was or what she was supposed to be doing. And she hated not knowing what she was doing!

Looking around, she saw a lot of people she didn't know...or did they look vaguely familiar? She stood back and looked at her surroundings and the other people--hey, most of them were wearing some sort of uniform, just like hers! And this looked like some sort of game or athletic event. They must all be on some sort of a team, and they were supposed to use all these pieces of equipment and make it to the finish line.

Well, Violet was never one to avoid a competition (whether or not she knew what it was), so she walked over to the nearest thing she came to (monkey bars) and, looking at them for a minute to figure out what she was supposed to do, jumped up and grabbed on to the first rail. Violet was normally wretched at this sort of athletic feat, but fortunately, she didn't remember that, so she just put one hand before the other and made good time across the bars.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Gradually, Claudine’s incessant babbling ceased and she was so relieved. It was completely done by the time Varma called them back to where they had started. The sixth year folded her arms across her chest, her face blank of any emotions. Well, she wasn’t feeling anything but relief at the moment, anyway.

The question was an easy one for her. Claudine had already figured out hers was back when she was halfway through the course. Her Hand went up. “The Babbling Beverage. I figured that was it because I kept saying random words and sentences that didn’t make any sense.”

Serena became aware of the older Slytherin when they spoke in reply to what she had asked. She's heard...things about them. Things about last term. And she's observed them once in a while during lessons. She added an extra foot between them and pretended not to hear. They, after all, had not addressed her by name.

She understood, though. Potions wasn't just about brewing or collecting ingredients. It was about knowing their effects and the ability to identify said effects when they were in play. The latter was an area Serena needed more practice in.

"The boy over there--" she didn't know their name, "was rolling around in laugher. He could have gotten a laughing potion." Just like the Remy girl.

There was no way he could finish, or even begin, the obstacle course in this state. As Max laughed and rolled uncontrollably on the ground, his annoyance and fatigue increased by the second. Finally, the NOT-Strengthening-Solution wore off and he immediately stood up, brushed himself off and made his way to the very back of the group. All he wanted was to be invisible after that humiliating incident.

But someone used him to answer Professor Varma's question. Yeah, just great, more attention that he didn't want. Feeling no need to repeat the answer, he simply looked down and sulked, quietly hoping that people were not staring at him again.
