Potions Lesson 2: Identifying Potions

https://i.postimg.cc/MKdrwF7z/Potions-Lesson-2.png

It's a fresh, dewy spring morning as you make your way across the Grounds for Potions. A light breeze rustles through the budding trees, and the sun gently warms the grass. The perfect weather for an outdoor lesson.

When you arrive, you'll see a large obstacle course, consisting of various monkey bars, seesaws, balance beams, and hoops. Shreya stands next to a wooden table at the starting line, arranging various potion vials according to their labels.

There are no chairs to be seen, so just take up a standing spot for now. The lesson will begin shortly.

OOC: Welcome, welcome! Thanks for coming to our second IC lesson. As always, please familiarize yourself with the classroom rules before posting. We will begin in approximately 24 hours.

Lesson Progression:
Main Activity: Select a potion and complete the obstacle course.
Q1: What potion do you think you consumed?
Q2: What are some ways we can identify potions?
Mini Activity: Use Scarpin's Revelaspell to identify an unknown potion.

Lisa liked being outside for lessons especially with the weather being so NICE! Plus this was a class she really enjoyed so she was extra bouncy. She was also quite fortunate because she, unlike her eldest brother, did not suffer from springtime allergies. There was an inviting breeze that beckoned her to walk a little quickly to the lesson location. Throwing her hands up in the air, she did a happy twirl before skipping and humming a Sound of Music classic. Lisa was most happy this fine spring morning to be up and outside!

She arrived quickly at the lesson location and her smile grew even bigger when she saw an obstacle course with monkey bars, balance beams, hoops, and more! How neat!! She couldn’t wait to give it a go. “Good Morning Professor! It’s sooooo NICE outside!!” she beamed. “How are you?

kayquilz 07-11-2021 03:52 PM

Potions time!

V arrived early for once, and was excited to see the obstacle course. How WEIRD potions would be outside today, though! "Lisa!" she said as she stopped next to her friend. "Good day, Professor! I want to do the obstacle course!!!" she beamed as she gestured at it. It looked FUN.

Lissy Longbottom 07-11-2021 04:31 PM

Adam was a bit confused about being outside, but he also wasn't complaining. Outdoor time sounded great, and it was a nice breezy day here as well. Naturally he was just in SUCH a good mood right now that he didn't even care about what they would be doing in class, or that he had to learn and pay attention to something. He was just happy to be here, as usual.

He took a standing spot and looked around, taking note of the variety of items in the obstacle course. If there was going to be a race to see who could do the monkey bars the fastest he was DEFINITELY winning, just FYI.

astrocat 07-11-2021 04:53 PM

Standing next to Lisa and V btw

Ash had been in a good mood lately, for reasons. That she would not be sharing. Was it even real happiness she was feeling, or was she faking it? Or was she feeling happy because of bread? What kind of happiness was it? Was it real? Who knew... not Ash. But hey, she looked happy and she slept and ate, so it didn’t matter if the actual happiness was real or not. Or at least that was how Ash saw it.

One thing Ash did know? Going outside made her happy for real. So maybe this was a period of real happiness inside a period of fake happiness inside a period of misery. Confusing.

She stood next to Lisa and V, crossing her arms and nodding at the people present.

She even smiled. Ashley Fox was here, at least for now.

It had been a couple of weeks since a slight mishap had taken Nem out of the game for several days, and they were still dealing with some lingering ill effects. Might have been poor timing, given they'd turned seventeen the day before on the first of April, if they hadn't been uninterested in celebrating in the first place. It made sense too that they were not going to have a particularly speedy recovery, but it was inconvenient regardless. Though they still looked a little unwell, as each day was a step up from the last and they no longer appeared to have one foot in the grave, it was nothing that was likely to cause any real concern.

Still, when they arrived at the scheduled lesson area, they set eyes on the obstacle course that had been set up and quickly realised it wasn't going to happen. No doubt they'd be in for some judgement from the children for dipping out of yet another lesson or activity, but, fortunately enough, Nem had never taken any of their opinions to heart. It really did wonders.

"Professor Varma," Nem said, quietly and politely, breaking what had been an ongoing silence in lessons - bar that one Defence Against the Dark Arts class - as they reached her. "Is there an alternative activity I can do today? I'm still not a hundred percent." Nem eyed the potions vials, then looked up at Varma again. Of course, it hadn't been confirmed what they were going to be doing, but the set-up left little room for doubt. If they had to actually take any potions, they'd have been automatically counted out, but it paid to be polite, and make a little obvious effort to engage. Merlin knew they could churn out an essay on anything in this curriculum with ease, so just give them a topic, and they'd be away.

AlwaysSnapesGirl 07-11-2021 06:02 PM

Ivy always appreciated when lessons were held outside. Even during the winter it was nice to be out on the grounds, but autumn and spring were of course preferable, especially today when the spring weather cooperated perfectly.

"Good morning, Professor," she said, smiling upon seeing Professor Varma and the obstacle course. That looked interesting, and she was eager to find out what potion they'd be using for it. But she'd have to wait until the lesson began for that, so for now she found a spot to stand.

Deezerz 07-11-2021 07:19 PM

Potions lesson outside...?

Curious. Serena wondered if it had something to do with the potency of the potion that it couldn't be outside. Whatever it was, her assumption was most likely wrong because what the professor had laid out didn't reflect that.

Potions was, is, and will always be her heart. So she was typically in a good mood during this class block. "Hello, Professor," she greeted with a half smile.

Making her way towards her group of friends (because she ACTUALLY had a group of friends Lisa, V, Ashley) she stood beside them. Tilting her head curiously she examined the obstacle course. "What do you think we'll be doing?" she asked her friends. Her brain was 93% textbook, so something like this made her curiosity itch.

FearlessLeader19 07-11-2021 08:13 PM

It wasn’t as though a Potions lesson was expected to be held outdoors each time. This was one reason why Claudine eagerly made her way to join the others who had already gathered. Oh, an obstacle course. How interesting. “Hi, Professor,’’ the sixth year greeted, eyeing the vials curiously. “Looking forward to the lesson.’’ This was true; Varma always planned her lessons to be interesting and Claudine always enjoyed them.

She waved a bit in the direction of her younger friends {Serena, Ash, Lisa and the usually rude Victoriawhom Claudine still not completely warmed up to} as she moved to stand somewhere by herself. Her social batteries weren’t exactly charged at the moment.

siriusblackliveson 07-11-2021 11:45 PM

Potions lessons outside seemed like a bad idea, stray flames anyone? This didn't seem like a good idea. She was seriously taking part in this class. She wanted to go back inside and just not be in the grass. But here she was trying to be a good little student and set an example for the young students. Walking closer to the other students she waved to Claudine deciding standing next to her was a good idea, "Do you mind if I stand here?"

lazykitty 07-12-2021 09:02 AM

Dia wasn't gonna complain about Potions being outside. Sometimes it was nice to shake it up and get out of the castle. You know, outside of free time. What wasn't so nice was the obstacle course she saw as she approached the section of lawn set aside for this class. What did this have to do with Potions? She stood amongst her fellow assembled classmates with her arms crossed, a questioning look on her face.

Why could they never just have a straightforward class at Hogwarts?

MadMadamMalfoy 07-12-2021 09:22 AM

After spending nearly half of last term locked in a room under the school, Heath relished the opportunity for outdoor classes. As he made his way across the grounds, he couldn't help but think what a perfect day it was for an outside lesson. Upon his arrival, he greeted Professor Varma with a polite nod of acknowledgement. "Good morning, Professor," he said.

Eyes scanning the area for familiar faces, he spotted Claudine and Charlie and moved to stand with them. "Hi," he greeted. Soon his eyes were drawn to the obstacle course. Hmm… usually he could sort of guess where a lesson might be going based on the class setup, but he had no idea how an obstacle course would relate to potions! Oh well, he supposed it would all make sense soon* enough… at least he hoped so.

Kolyander 07-12-2021 12:28 PM

Having a class outside wasn't at all unusual. So she really didn't think much of it as she made her way across the grounds to where the Potions lesson was going to be taking place. Not until she was able to see what all was set up around the space, anyhow. Monkey bars, balance beams? It was clearly an obstacle course, anyone could see that. What it was all for, was the real question.

"Hello, Professor," she greet with a warm cheerful smile. Dahlia stood in a random spot that wasn't exactly all that close to anyone. She was quietly studying the obstacle course while waiting for the lesson to begin.

Sunflower 07-12-2021 02:30 PM

Potions class on the grounds? Interesting ... and the weather was nice, too! Max wondered what the lesson would be about, and how being outside would affect their potion brewing. Carrying the usual class supplies in his backpack and wearing a pair of sneakers, he made his way across the grounds to where class was to be held.

"Good morning," he greeted Professor Varma, and walked over to take up a standing spot a good distance away from the kids who were volunteering to do the obstacle course. Huh, that must be why they were required to wear shoes for moving around, though he truly had no idea what monkey bars had to do with any potion. Dark brown eyes slid from the obstacle course to the labeled potion vials on the wooden table as he tried to figure it out.

Shreya was in her own little world, enjoying the feel of the sun on her face and organizing the vials. She was so engrossed in the task that she didn’t even see the first student approaching—not until she heard the lovely Sound of Music tune. “Good morning, Ms. Nam! That’s a perfect song for a perfect day,” the professor said with a wink. She beamed at the energetic first year before returning to the box of potions.

Another first year joined them soon enough, and Victoria got the same smile-y welcome. Shreya couldn’t help but be happy with the beautiful weather. It was miraculous what a bit of sunlight could do for your mood. “I think you may get a chance soon enough,” Shreya replied, wiggling her eyebrows in mock-mysteriousness.

Truth be told, Shreya had gone back and forth about holding the lesson outside. She knew some students didn’t love outdoor lessons. But then again, she couldn’t think of a better way to teach today’s topic than with an obstacle course. Not to mention that the weather had been lovely lately. So, outdoors it was. “Good morning, Mr. Luck.” She greeted the Gryffindor with a wave.

It was good to see a smile on Ashley Fox’s face. Shreya had certainly noticed that the Ravenclaw had been a bit….off lately. Perhaps the springtime weather was doing her a bit of good as well. “Hello, Ms. Fox,” she said, returning the girl’s smile with one of her own.

An actual statement from Nemesis Upstead? Color Shreya quite surprised. Nemesis had always been quiet, but as of recently, they had been especially reserved. Not to mention looking a bit worse for the wear. Whatever was going on with them was still a bit of a mystery. A small part of her wondered if she should request to meet with them in her office. Try to get some info. Then again, she didn’t see that process turning out in her favor.

“Good morning, Nemesis. I’m afraid there’s no alternative activity,” she replied matter-of-factly. No, she would never force her students to do anything—including ingesting potions. It was their loss if they didn’t wish to participate. They could always observe. “But there’s more to the lesson than just the course. Wait and see.”

“Hello, dear,” Shreya said to the fourth year with a nod. Another student that looked quite pleased to be outside. She was glad nobody seemed to be uncomfortable with the outdoor arrangement yet. Although if anybody had allergies, that might be a different story. The air was quite fragrant with the spring blooms.

This Slytherin looked a bit confused as to the lesson location. Perfectly valid, as Potions wasn’t typically a subject that lended itself to outdoor classes. But the students would figure out why soon enough. “Good morning, Serena,” Shreya waved to the first year and watched with a smirk as she curiously took in the obstacle course.

Now Charlie didn’t seem too thrilled to be tromping through the dewy grass. But then again, outdoor lessons couldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Hopefully she’d come around to it once she felt how marvelously warm and fresh it felt out here. “Good morning, Ms. Rivers.” Shreya nodded to the Gryffindor in greeting.

The quizzical look on Lydia's face did not go unnoticed, although the Slytherin's contempt seemed to be directed more at the hoops and balance beams than the location of the lesson. "Good morning, Ms. Wolff," Shreya said, directing a nod in the girl's direction.

Ahh, this one had been smart and heeded the instructions to wear comfortable shoes. Those would most certainly come in handy today. "Good morning, Mr. Young," Shreya replied, placing the empty box below the table.

There was no door to poke her head out of today, so Shreya settled for a quick eye scan around the ground to make sure everyone had arrived before starting the lesson.

"Good morning, everyone!" She clapped her hands together, addressing the class as a whole in greeting. "Thank you for joining me outside today. I thought we could all use a good dose of fresh air!" After a chilly winter, there really was nothing better than blue skies and sunshine. She gestured toward the obstacle course before continuing. "And the grounds provide a perfect location for today's activity! I'm sure you're all itching to get started, so I won't waste any time."

Shreya made her way behind the table, which was now brimming with miscellaneous labeled potion vials, each holding different colors and textures of solutions. "Your task is simple: Take a potion and complete the obstacle course. There are a few different brews—all labeled—to choose from. You can choose whichever one you prefer...and whichever one you think will help you best succeed."

Was she purposefully being vague? Perhaps. She didn't want to give them too many ground rules—she wanted to see their creativity at work. The professor pointed to the available potions before smiling at the group. "Drink up and get started!"

SPOILER!!: Available Potions (and what each one looks like)
  • Strengthening Solution - A bubbly, bright yellow potion
  • Wit-Sharpening Potion - A deep red potion
  • Girding Potion - A cloudy orange potion
  • Exstimulo Potion - A shimmery, sky blue potion
  • Invigoration Draught - A swirly purple potion

OOC: Starting off with the main activity! Time to RP your character picking a potion, drinking it, and beginning the obstacle course. Please refrain from RPing any potion effects yet. I'll be posting as a narrator to update you on when your character's potion begins to take effect...and any other surprises in store. ;) Just send me a nudge with any questions. You have approximately 4 days to complete the activity.

Well, nobody could say they hadn't made something resembling an effort. Or, rather, they could, and probably would, but it would make about as much difference as it usually did. To Varma's response, they simply shrugged, and stepped away. Depending on exactly what was about to transpire - and Nem could make an educated guess - it was more likely to be their loss if they did participate, but they didn't expect the professor to know that.

Oh, yes, itching to get started. Positively champing at the bit.

As Varma delivered her instructions, Nem turned their attention to the vials on the table, their labels, and what they could see of the contents. They scanned them all once, and then a second time, before shooting a hard look suddenly at Varma. Couldn't have lasted longer than a second - a blink-and-you'll-miss-it, briefly murderous glare - before it was gone.

And so was Nemesis. Not from the lesson - it wasn't worth the hassle when they were in this condition - but they did move away from the table of potions and seated themselves on the ground, apparently to watch whatever was coming. As it turned out, they couldn't have participated anyway, not with the potions on offer, and it had nothing to do with the usual reasons they might have offered.

Not that they were thinking about that at the moment. Something else now took precedence, by a country mile.

emjay 07-12-2021 09:28 PM

An obstacle course, cool. Morgan barely glanced at the potions before picking up the strengthening solution. Of course, if he'd given it some thought, the wit-sharpening potion probably would have been the best choice. But to be perfectly honest, Morgan didn't even read them all and picked up the first one that also looked the best. What 16 year old boy wouldn't want to also be the strongest?

He quickly down it, ready for the obstacle course! First he jumped up onto the balance beam then ran all the way to the end before he could fall off, nearly losing his balance in the process. But he was fast enough to counteract his about to fall apparently. Next were the monkey bars and jumped right on as climbing was his favorite!

Ash liked DOING stuff. Exercising. Fighting. Sports. So this lesson sounded quite fun. Ash figured she could do the course without potions, but this WAS a potions class soooo... She drank the girding potion. Endurance was important.

She got started on the money bars, not feeling any fatigue yet. It was only the beginning. She could do this part easily, assuming that she could keep her momentum.

This lesson was gonna be good. Ash could feel it.

natethegreat 07-12-2021 11:38 PM

Here all along!

Ooo an obstacle course. Kayne was quite intrigued by the activity of class today, and was more then happy to actually start doing it right away. Skipping over all the actual boring, learning parts of it all, they could actually get to do the main work. Not to brag, but the hazel eyed Mordrake boy was fairly decent when it came to obstacle courses too. That was because of his quick thinking nature, and cleverness. Sometimes rules were just meant to be broken or bent into such a way that it's still not technically breaking it; and from the looks of things there wasn't going to be much on rules to actually running the course itself.

Striding over to the desk with all the potions laid out, Kayne immediately reached for the one that actually rang some bells in his head; the Exstimulo Potion. Downing it, he now knew that one of his spells would be empowered, which could potentially give him a huge advantage when it came to this. Whenever something came in between Kayne and a goal that couldn't be achieved physically, he tended to use magic. So taking that potion should help a lot.

Momentarily after taking the potion, Kayne walked over to the first obstacle, some hoops that they had to jump through. Knowing there was no way that he'd be able to jump through one by simply just jumping, he backed up a few paces to get a running start. A few tense seconds went by as the surprisingly athletic fashionista jogged in place. Then, at the drop of a dime, he took off in a full sprint to build up momentum. At the very last second, Kayne Mordrake took the leap of faith, and made it through the hoop! To stick the landing, the boy did an action roll, ready to face the next obstacle.

She may have been standing by herself but of course Claudine did not mind Charlie standing with her. She shook her head; no, she didn’t mind. “I’ll be glad for the company,’’ the sixth year replied with a smile. Not a long time after, Heath arrived. “Hi, you.’’ The Ravenclaw got a smile too.

The Snakette couldn’t agree more with Varma; it was great to have a Potions lesson outdoors. Her dark gaze followed the woman then moved to the vials, which were so attractive with their colours. An eyebrow arched as she took in the instructions. Indeed this was all very interesting and unusual.

Claudine opted for the deep red potion - the Wit Sharpening potion and soon was downing that potion. Right. She was ready for the course now, yes?

The Professor Varma was SO PRETTY. Most of their Professors were but Lisa thought she was the prettiest. So when she smiled back at Lisa and even KNEW the song she was humming, she flashed her a HUGE smile.

V joined her! Oh good, V and her were good, yes? She gave her friend a beamy smile paired with a greeting. Then Ash and Serena joined them too! Both of them got a smile. Wow! Lisa’s eyes darted to the obstacle course. It was like a siren beckoning her to break free from the crowd to go have FUN. Gah. Had to wait for more people and more instructions.

She didn’t have to wait too long thankfully as class began.

So there mission today, if they chose to accept it, was to select a potion and enter the obstacle course. She eyes the many different colours of the potions and realized that she knew a few of them well and the others… err…. not so well. BUT! There was an orange potion so she was naturally drawn to that one because orange was one of her favourite colours. She was about to reach for that potion when she noticed Nem. Huh….. She wondered what they were thinking but she wasn’t sure if she should approach. Daniel seemed to like Nem well enough so perhaps Nem was kind? Lisa wasn’t a hundred percent sure but she knew Nem was intelligent so she paused, wondering what potion he’d pick but he didn’t even go for one.

She turned back to glance at the vials, reaching towards the cloudy orange one, before pausing to look at the shimmering blue vial. She was about to grab that one when she stopped herself and went with her gut. Orange was better. It was an endurance potion and she’d need that… Though perhaps strength would have been wise given her slight frame and fun sized height.

Lisa held the vial in her hand, eying it, before lifting it up to her lips. Lisa lowers it and then looked over to a few of her peers and raised the vial. “Cheers?” she said, hoping that it wasn’t going to be a terrible tasting potion. Once again, she raised the vial to her lips and drank the potion.

A moment later, she was standing in front of the obstacle course and then paused. She raised her hand. “Professor, can we try all the potions and do a trial run with the obstacle course later? It’d be interesting to see what works best…” she mentioned.

He did not have to wait long to learn what the comfortable shoes were for. They were starting the lesson with an activity - a physical activity - which Max did not like too much. What if they ran out of time and couldn't learn the actual mechanism behind the reactions? But he knew that experiencing potion effects was also an important part of learning, so he did not complain (out loud) as he shuffled over to the table where the vials were.

He did not know what the Girding Potion and Exstimulo Potion were. From the others, he thought that what he needed most was additional strength. In his opinion, he wasn't dumb enough to take a Wit-Sharpening Potion, and as for the Invigoration Draught ... meh. He did not want to be super energetic like Lisa Nam, even though she was nice and all that. So he took a vial of Strengthening Solution, smelled the bubbly yellow liquid, and drank it in one gulp.

... Was he stronger now? The first year waited for his turn in front of the obstacle course, bouncing on the balls of his feet as a warm-up.

Dahlia couldn't have been more glad that Professor Varma got right down to business with the lesson. It only took a few moments before it was confirmed that they would all indeed be taking on the obstacle course. This was fine with her, nothing with a bit of agility training and keeping physically fit. It would also help burn off some of the extra energy she usually seemed to have.

Shifting her gaze towards the table of potions at least now she understood where that came into play with the days lesson. Take a potion, drink it and complete the course. It sounded simple enough. A little too simple. Lia was pretty sure something was probably going to happen once she was on that course but there was no real way of knowing.. until she was out there giving it her all.

Walking over to the table, the second year studying each one of the potions in turn. First taking in the colors and then the potions names. Yellow, red, orange, blue and purple. At first glance what she wanted to do without even thinking about it was make a grab for the shimmery sky blue potion. Lately blue held her attention more than most other colors. Looking at the potions name though had her think twice about it. Would she be using spells on the obstacle course?

Was she going to need more strength? Maybe. Wit? Possibly. Endurance? It was a possibility. Energy? Uhh, she had lots of that buuuuuut the color was really pretty. The swirly purple potion had caught her eye almost as much as the sky blue one. Might as well go with the one she liked the best.

Picking up the Invigoration Draught, Lia gave the vial a little swirl before lifting it to her lips and drinking it as quickly as she could. Setting the empty vial down, she was ready to go!

Heading to the first part of the obstacle course it was monkey bars right away. She climbed up and grabbed hold of the first bar, swinging herself a little before making a grab to the next bar. So far, so good.

To say Violet was deeply disappointed to find that today's potions class was apparently going to consist of outdoor athletics rather than a peaceful brewing session indoors would be an understatement. Sighing, she looked over the available potions, trying to decide what would be most useful.

Wit-sharpening? Hmmm... Her wits were usually pretty sharp already, it was her athletic ability that was wanting. She wasn't very familiar with the Extimulo potion and wasn't about to down an experimental potion without knowing exactly what it did. So--did she need invigorating, strengthening, or 'girding' the most? She wasn't the most energetic in the mornings, but she figured that once she started the course, momentum and sheer doggedness would carry her through all right. She wasn't the most athletic person in the world, so strength would probably be helpful. But--look at all those obstacles in the course.

Violet concluded that endurance would be the best bet here, so she picked up a vial of the cloudy orange potion and lifted it to her lips. Ugh! she wrinkled her nose at the smell, but forced herself to drink it down anyway. Now for the obstacle course! Violet hoped for the best, but didn't expect too much from herself.

Remy quite enjoyed being in the outdoor environment, so taking their usual dreary potions lesson to the grounds was a real treat. Her excitement was fed to find out they were doing an obstacle course, and taking potions to aid the activity! COOL.

It wasn’t difficult choosing which potion to take, most of them she had no idea the effects. Which made them all the more tempting, by the way…

But it wasn’t always a smart choice to choose the unknown, so Remy battled her initial judgement. Endurance was tempting… but she felt she had enough of that especially when during a competitive activity like this. They were playing to win, right?

Tying her hair back into a quick, lazy ponytail, Remy grabbed herself a vial vial of Strengthening Solution, gulped it down, and headed straight for the obstacle course. This Gryffindor was READY.
