Auditions!!

If you’ve got an interest in the drama club’s latest production, you’ve come to the right place. The duelling arena has been remodelled to now resemble a theatre, the large stage in front and many rows of seats for those waiting to audition to wait.

The Headmaster sits at the front by a table. He’ll have some help with the judging, as evidenced by the empty chairs on either side of him. Hung up on the stage is the surest sign you’re in the right place. It’s a large banner that says:

Quote:

OPEN AUDITONS!!!
Hopefully you brought your own material, but if you haven’t, there’s a few scripts set on the little table on the right of the stage. You can pick something and unleash your natural talent.

For now, come in and have a seat. We’ll begin shortly.

OOC: If you wanna be in the play in any capacity at all, this is the place to be. Don’t worry if your character isn’t interested in the acting part, they would still be invited here (as this thread is what we’ll be using to determine who does what).

Kale Alexander Trent was STOKED. Famously, the sixth year was a bit of a drama queen, emphasis on D R A M A. He'd been taking tap dancing since he could basically walk, and was a pretty decent all-around dancer, singer and actor. These skillz had been cultivated by an environment of imagination and play that Headmaster Trent and his wife had encouraged in their home.

The duo had even put on the HOME-Y'S, the at-home Tony Awards, every summer since Kale could string together a rousing rendition of Memory from Cats.

SPEAKING OF CATS. Picture this: Malachi Trent in full spandex playing along with his kids in the aforementioned at-home productions. Ugh. He'd given a truly dazzling turn as whatever cats his kids didn't want to pretend to be. All the awards. Tens, tens, tens across the board.

ANYWAY. What was Kale trying to say? Oh right.

THE AUDITIONS. He was very excited. The blonde twirled into the dueling arena, blonde hair flying every which way, before he addressed his father, "Hiya Dad. I'm thinking, for the audition, we do our two man show. Whatcha think?" He was obviously teasing. But also. Like. Shrug. If he wanted to....

astrocat 06-02-2021 03:28 PM

Ash was not really into this whole 'play' thing. She liked singing, she was fine with dancing, she could act when she wanted to. But like... she just wasn't interested. She WAS interested in set design. And she was here with her drawing notebooks, ready to beg the headmaster and look sad until he said they needed a set designer. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that though. For now, she just sat quietly, offering a silent nod to the headmaster. She doodled some ideas in her 'scenery' sketchbook. She really really really wanted to do set design. Like, she was even ready to use unfair tactics. Like puppy eyes. And looking sad. But mostly, she thought that her talent was more than enough.

TakemetotheBurrow 06-02-2021 04:53 PM

As the charms professor, Neva was interested to see what kind of lighting and effect spells the kids could make use of in order to make this play as realistic as possible. She'd brought along a clipboard to write down her thoughts on those auditioning for the stage crew and she had it tucked under her arm as she joined Malachi at the table.

"I have to admit, I'm kind of excited." After everything last term, it felt good to be bonding with the kids over something a lot more lighthearted. Plus she liked the theater setting. The costumes and makeup. The scenery. It was fun to escape in this way for a while and she was glad to offer her help. Honestly, anything to take a break from repairing damaged bones (Cambridge). She offered a smile to those already waiting to audition and then set her clipboard on the table and waited.

-----

Holy hippogriffs, she was nervous. Also excited. Also she should've eaten a little more before her audition because she was snacky when she was nervous and sadly, there wasn't anything to snack on here. She really should've planned this better. Gosh.

Spotting Kale, the blonde smiled a little and made her way over to him. She was dressed as Alice in Wonderland, could he tell? "Hi." She nearly went to kiss his cheek, only THEN she realized his dad was watching, which made her think of how WEIRD the headmaster had been towards her and WHY, and that just turned the sixth year RIGHT into a tomato. Red faced. Blushing. Yikes.

Err....

"Hello Headmaster, Professor Peralta." She managed a smile. "Hey Ashley." The younger girl got a smile, too.

Samia 06-02-2021 06:13 PM

June neeeeeeded to see this. It was just what the healer ordered (pun not intended????). Anyway, the brunette found her way into the make-shift theatre and made her way to the headmaster and Neva.

"This is going to be really entertaining" June grinned at the two.

"I am so ready to see them all"

Lo and behold, Aries Flamsteed was here in the most serious clothes he could find in his trunk - which was basically his uniform but worn in the most proper way possible.

A script already in hand he made his way over to where the judges were - and the the other ~ACtOrs~.

"Hullo"

"I'd like to do a very serious, dramatic reading for my audition." Should he start? Or was he supposed to wait his turn? Or was it first come, first serve kind of thing????

Watson 06-02-2021 08:09 PM

Lisa was feeling unusually calmer than normal about this audition. She walked into the classroom with a notebook in hand that she flipped through. Inside the notebook, she had several different types of monologues captured (classic, traditional, dramatic, comedic, modern) that she had ready to go for her audition. Biting her lip, she continued flipping through her notebook and took a seat near Aries Flamsteed. Thinking that he was Atlas, she stood closer to him. “Break a leg Atlas!” she whispered to him, fully not realizing that the boy was actually Atlas’ twin.

Then she went over to stand near the other actors. Lisa continued flipping through her book as she tried to decide which one to go with. Hmmmmm.... choices... choices....

Fireheart 06-02-2021 08:27 PM

Shreya had been looking forward to audition day all week long. Donned in a pair of silky teal robes (a bright color felt particularly necessary for the theatrical occasion), she made her way into the dueling arena. A familiar flutter filled her chest as she took in the stage. It had been far too long since she'd set foot in an auditorium—the last time was when she performed in the opera at Centre Stage London over five years ago. And she missed acting dearly. So naturally, when Malachi had asked for assistance in evaluating the auditions, Shreya was one of the first to volunteer.

"Hello, everyone!" the Potions professor greeted her colleagues with a broad smile as she found a seat at the table, a warm cardamom latte in hand. "I'm excited to see what they can do," she agreed with Neva and June. "I feel like we may have some aspiring stage stars on our hands."

Avalon entered the duelling arena, pulling a large trunk behind her. She wasn't sure exactly what an audition for the costume crew would look like, but she figured she should at least bring her fabrics and sewing kit just in case. Always better to be prepared. The seventh year took a seat next to Lisa, giving the girl a friendly wave as she approached. "Trying out for a role? What script are you gonna pick?" No, stage acting wasn't quite up Avalon's alley—but she surely could live vicariously through her housemates.

ArianaBlack 06-02-2021 08:58 PM

Finneas R. Schmoe here. The R stands for Reporting for duty.

Though, er, he wasn't quite sure whether he was meant to sit at the judges' panel or if he ought to take a seat next to the other auditioners. Just to be safe, he chose the latter. He had come to audition after all. His loafers meant serious business.

Or. Er. Something like that. They were better suited for business casual, if he were being honest with himself. He had misplaced his nicer pair in the mess that was his office. They were in one of the several boxes. Surely he hadn't left them behind during the ... unexpected move.

Anyway, AnYwAy, ANYWAY.

Despite the strange disconnect he was feeling, Finneas thought that involving himself in the production might allow him some clarity. A needed distraction from the tug-of-war going on in his planet sized brain and pea sized heart. Perhaps stepping out of his thoughts would allow him an opportunity to find another tether.

Stepping into the room, he stopped to nod hullo to each of his colleagues, offering a salute to June, in particular, before making way for the chairs set aside for auditioneers.

aRogueOne 06-02-2021 11:31 PM

I mean, if you don't mind being sick on... :O

Slightly confused as to why she was heading towards the duelling arena, Ingrid’s little legs continued to head towards the room, her mind only really processing the fact that there were indeed auditions for the drama club’s latest production and that she was going to try be apart of it. Or at least try anyway and most likely make a fool of herself but that was fine too.

Despite feeling a deep inner sense of dread at the watching gaze of the headmaster as she entered the room, Ingrid’s briefly moved towards the other children in the room, her face looking slightly pale and sickly. Was she ill? Coming down with a fever? Who knew? Not her anyway. “Hello Headmaster. Professor Peralta. Professor Flamsteed. Professor Varma. Professor Schmoe”, her only form of greeting as she made her way past them. Holy moly, had she greeted them all? Why were there so many of them even there to watch? Like, come on? Three would have been enough but there were enough teachers here to start some kind of new actors union or something.

“Hey everyone. H-“ How were they feeling? It didn’t matter. Why? Because Ingrid Luck was going to be sick!

Heaving slightly, the third year Ravenclaw covered her mouth for the moment and, seemingly with self-restraint from somewhere unknown, she shivered and blinked several times before finishing her previous sentence. “How is everyone feeling? Any nerves?”, the smile across her face a little bit forced as she eyed some of the other students curiously. She herself had no script but still kind of wanted to try out for a reading part. Maybe, if her food stayed down…

Chelliephone 06-02-2021 11:38 PM

He had zero interest in actually ACTING in the play, but Evan was hoping to volunteer for working behind the scenes. It seemed like a good opportunity to spend more time with people and maybe make a couple of more friends. So he made his way into the duelling... auditorium? Well this was certainly a change of scenery. The Ravenclaw eyed the group of people already gathered, feeling pretty sure that he could pick out who was planning on auditioning for an actual role and who was just there like him for behind the scenes. He smiled spotting his little sister flipping through a notebook, sure she had plenty planned for an audition.

They really should have re-enacted a Star Wars scene together. Even if he didn't want a part, it would have been comical and that was something they had plenty of practice on.

He decided to not bother anyone that might be practicing before audition, and instead just quietly finding himself a seat to slide into. He smiled in greeting at all the Professor's gathered, but forewent giving any verbal greeting in the chance that it broke someone's concentration.

But then he spotted Ingrid who looked... concerningly unwell. Evan blinked before quietly moving again to make his way closer towards her. "Are you alright?"

FearlessLeader19 06-03-2021 12:07 AM

Needless to say that Claudine was impressed with the transformation the Arena had gone through. And no, she was not completely ignorant of theatre stuff {thanks to Heath}. Being someone who likes to stay out of the spotlight, Claudine was just here to offer moral support to the boyfriend and any of her friends that were auditioning.

“Headmaster,’’ the sixth year said coolly in announcement of her arrival. “Professors.’’ They actually got a smile out of her before her eyes were seeking out familiar faces with whom she was most comfortable around. Ashley.

Claudine sidled over to the Ravenclaw and gave her a light nudge. “Hi. Going to be auditioning?’’ Also, how come Heath wasn’t there as yet?

Charely Potter 06-03-2021 12:15 AM

Dare walked into what used to be the Dueling Arena. Wow.. Impressive. He had considered the amount of work necessary to be in this production, whatever it entails. After enough deducing, he was still in.

"Hello," Darius said, eyeing everyone else already here. He eyed the scripts on the table. Something... serious. He went ahead to pick one off the table. If he bombed on the audition, he would hope to get to at least help with the production behind the scenes or whatever.

After picking his set of material he took a seat and waited for the next step.

SilverTiger 06-03-2021 12:29 AM

In some ways, Gracelyn still thought the dueling arena seemed like an odd place to hold theatre auditions, but then in others, it really wasn’t. She figured they couldn’t exactly overhaul the Great Hall temporarily, and the RoR was probably just as unlikely. Just by way of how would everyone be able to get in and not end up in a completely different environment. Plus, the headmaster was leading the whole thing, and the dueling arena was kind of his domain.

Either way, she had been thinking about her audition for a while. There had been trips to the library to see if they had anything she could use for her audition, but in the end, she had chosen to owl her papas to ask if they had any suggestions. Since they knew her the best, and she had just gotten a package from Aunt Eliana that morning that contained a few script selections. All that remained was to decide what she actually was going to use.

Nerves were mostly at bay, due to experience from gymnastics and dance shows, but she wasn’t entirely confident either. She was definitely excited to see if she’d get cast in a role or not though. New experiences weren’t bad.

“Hi Headmaster. Professors,” she greeted, giving them all smiles even as she took up a spot near Kale and Cece, script pages in hand and possibly slipping Cece a small snack with her free hand in the process. If anything, she’d just say she was helping the Gryffindor’s aesthetic. What with the Alice costume and all.

Cassirin 06-03-2021 01:21 AM

"This is unprofessional," Phoebe grumbled as she fell into a seat on the other side of Kale. Cece and Gracelyn got a small smile - it wouldn't be a Phoebe entrance without a little good-natured griping, but she was always glad to see her friends. "How am I supposed to prepare without knowing what the tone and genre of this show is? What if Cece auditions as Alice but the lead role is a serial killer?" Wait. "Actually, that's genius. Strike it. Cece is the smartest of us all."

Phoebe was as prepared as she could be, considering she wasn't going to get her hopes up too high. Whatever they wanted her for, right? Sure, she'd worn her leotard and lucky legwarmers, hair pulled up into a messy bun to allow her to put her dancing chops on display unimpaired. Could she actually dance? Passably. Could she sing? Better than most, but she wasn't Tavie. (Tav would be LOVING this. *sigh*) But Phoebe could chew up scenery with the best of them, and she wasn't afraid to be on stage... and she had PROJECTION.

"HI, PROFESSOR SCHMOE. I HAVE ANOTHER COIN FOR YOU."

feeheeheeny 06-03-2021 01:55 AM

Huh. This was different. The dueling arena resembled nothing of its usual form, appropriately so, but it still caught Teddy off guard as he stepped inside just behind his twin sister. This wasn't really his thing, he didn't consider any aspect of performance to be, at least not like performing was to Kale or theatrics was to Fi or gymnastics was to Kiz or dance was to Gracelyn or acting was to Heath or charm was to Cece or--

He thought of Octavia Stark, Yolanda Luna, and Flynn Whitlock, and how they each would have thrived here today. His heart ached.

Gravitating toward Kale, Cece, and Gracelyn with Fi was instinctive, as was his smile and eye contact made with the adults present. "Hi. Thanks for being here." Because, you know, this was entirely voluntary, they probably had other ways to be spending their free time, et cetera - but here they were spending even more time with the students than they had to. Admirable, and Teddy acknowledged it.

"Cece's always the smartest," he noted to Fi & co., a fond smile accompanying his words.

He surveyed those present briefly. Nervousness and excitement appeared to be the common trend among the faces he scanned, but he was fairly cool. Chill. Nothing to be nervous about, really. He didn't expect to impress anyone today; he was just here to enjoy time with his peers and cheer others on. He could audition for the experience, sure, but the stakes were pretty low, all things considered. Lots of his friends were born for the spotlight, and he was eager to see them shine.

ArianaBlack 06-03-2021 02:10 AM

Teddy may have been tailing Phoebe, but Kinsay was tailing Teddy AND Phoebe. Best sneaaaak ever! Kiz did make her presence known once she stepped inside the arena though, one hand reaching for Teddy's and her other reaching for Phoebe's. It was for the best that she avoided looking over at the stage for now because.... Because it'd make her really nervous. Maybe just as nervous as Ingrid looked. Probably even more than that.

Because doing gymnastics in front of a crowd of strangers was one thing, but to be acting in front of her PEERS and her PROFESSORS? And................ a Headmaster who she could not stop associating with-- Um. It didn't matter. Everything was fine.

What DID matter was that she was here because Emm said they were auditioning for the play and Kinsay didn't want to disappoint her. Maybe if they asked politely, the professors might let them audition together. That'd probably help Kinz feel more at ease. Sandwiching herself between her siblings also helped with that.

Hehehe.

Hi.

AlwaysSnapesGirl 06-03-2021 02:37 AM

Ivy was sooo excited for this!

She'd prepared a couple things for her audition, just in case one felt better on the day of, especially if they finally announced what show they were putting on. Buuut then she also spotted the scripts that were already there, and now she wondered if maybe doing a cold reading would be a better way to show off whatever skills she had. Hmmmmm... Something to ponder for a bit.

"Hi, Headmaster. Hi, Professors." She grinned before continuing on to find a seat...pausing when she spotted Evan and Ingrid, who...didn't look too well.

She walked over. "Everything okay?" she asked softly.

Bryn 06-03-2021 02:47 AM

Eden took this seriously, and she had since before Hogwarts. "This" being hair and nails. She practiced a little at makeup with her friends, but hair and nails? That was where it was at, baybeeee. She didn't know how nails would be relevant to the show, but all the same her nail art took up a nice section of the pink leatherbound portfolio she'd brought along with her. Kind of a overkill way to say she painted nails and braided hair, but you didn't heart that from this narrator.

She'd also taken the time to meticulously iron her uniform today as well as style her hair. She wanted to be in charge of other peoples' appearances, so she made sure to look good herself. Logic.

"Hello Headmaster. Hello Professors." Politeness was always good. Now time to find a seat. She didn't take a script because she wouldn't be needing one. She noticed that Professor Varma was here and looked very pretty as usual, a sentiment Eden would carry to her grave.

She made a point to ignore Kinsay James. Today Eden Tilly would be presenting herself as ~mellow~. Drama free, if you will, Headmaster Trent. No trouble here! The second year sat next to Ashley and Claudine. "Hey guys!"

Ginevra 06-03-2021 07:54 AM

"Why did I sign up for this?" Fiona kept mentally saying to herself as she tried to control her nerves whilst remembering her audition piece. She had promised herself that she wouldn't be looking at a script whilst auditioning. Instead, she would recite a poem but with a dramatic flair.

"Hello, Headmaster Trent and Professors," Fiona with a smile, her voice quaking slightly with nerves before she sat down near Claudine.

Felixir 06-03-2021 04:15 PM

It had taken less than a day for Nem to reconsider this whole drama thing, and that went for anything behind the scenes too. Partly due to their meeting with the Headsman, and partly because of a sudden lack of interest in absolutely everything, they'd figured they would pass on the situation entirely. Yet the day had come, and here they were, doing a visual pat down of the duelling arena to see who was present, before going to take a seat directly behind the, ah... judges.

Several of the professors would no doubt expect the worst from them. Maybe a few even got a little twitchy about them mixing with the other students. Said students might get all tetchy about the idea of sharing a stage, duelling arena, or even just any free time whatsoever with them. In short, nobody wanted them here, so, naturally, 'here' was exactly where Nem had decided to be.

One of those days. Bored.

Nem had been told, only very recently, that they were a really good actor, though they didn't consider their talents quite in line with the hammed up mess that theatre seemed to require. This comment had made them no more or less inclined to go through with the audition. Maybe they'd change their mind about participating - adaptable, always open to change, that was them, though singing and dancing was probable cause for an immediate hard pass - but the main thing they wanted from today was to sit back and quietly see for themselves just how well the others could do what they did. To that end, putting their name down had been beneficial after all.

Locating Phoebe James herself in amongst her friends, Nem raised a hand in greeting, flicked their eyes to Limpet to extend the greeting to her as well, then turned to face the front again.

NiallNIP 06-03-2021 06:09 PM

Quinn made his way to the duelling arena with a giant bundle of knit clothes in his arms. He could barely see over or around the wad of clothes, but he managed well enough to stumble his way into the room. He looked around for open spots and saw a couple people he knew and some he wished he didn't and started making his way over.

He noticed Aries already in the room and thought he was Atlas for a split second, causing him to jump, but quickly realized the mix up. Quinn had gotten good at telling the twins apart. There was a certain... energy, almost, that was unique to them both. He reddened a bit and hoped no one noticed as he started waddling more quickly over to his friends.

A scarf and a couple socks dropped unnoticed from the large mass of yarn before he made it over by Eden, Ash and Claudine. He sat in a seat next to them with a huff, relaxing a bit now that he wasn't walking around encumbered. "Hello, everyone."

Bryn 06-03-2021 07:21 PM

"Quinn," Eden giggled as she stood up and retrieved his dropped knitwear. "You got some stragglers." And she dumped them unceremoniously atop the rest of the clothing in his lap.

And then she sat back in her seat and awaited her turn.

DaniDiNardo 06-03-2021 08:36 PM

She was here and she was reeeeeeaadddyyyy.

”Look out Hogwarts, your STAR has arrived!” Emmerson busted through the doors of the dueling arena, pulling her shades down, knowing the only true way to be recognised would be by making an impression the MOMENT she walked into the room. Loud bangs (like what the Headmaster liked to begin his lessons), a glamorous outfit and a loud mouth, those were the things that would take her through this audition.

“It wasn’t mE that sLaYeD the SAvAgE bEaSt.” She recited, projecting very clearly so everyone in all corners of the room would be able to here. She was making sure she would be very hard to forget. When the Professors got together later to deliberate, they would all surely have the name “Cambridge” on their lips one way or another.

Choosing to ignore the waiting area, Emm made her way past everyone and onto the stage.”I’m guilty of nothing but true love and unmistakable talent! When they try to get me down,” She clutched dramatically at her shirt, “I rise and rise AGAIN!!”

Oh yeah, she was nailing this audition already and was working on several different lines to make sure she had at least one they were looking for.

But.

“LIGHTS!! Who’s working the lights??? You have to hit my good side. Do I need to start again? I think I should.”

There he was. Malachi had been selfishly pleased to see his son’s name on the sign up sheet...even if he knew this was the time he wasn’t allowed to play favourites. No one had anything to worry about, the Headmaster would be entirely fair. He wanted the best people for each role and knew there were several parts that needed playing. The man cracked a smile at Kale’s. “Maybe another time. Gotta stay up here and judge this go around.” Those who got the parts would have plenty of opportunity to see a more dramatic side of the man.

The arrival of the women at to be table served to boost his own excitement. “I get the idea there will be a few to watch.” And this was just what the castle needed. Some light fun, a brilliant performance, something to take their minds off the dark cloud that hung around the memory of the previous term.

Trent greeted the students as they arrived, wishing equal luck to all in his further bid to have...no...favourites....

Oh sweet Merlin.

Malachi facepalmed as he watched Cambridge....enter. Facepalmed again when she got on stage. “Cambridge, please take a seat with the others. We’re about to begin.” When it wasn’t one thing, it was another.

But they really were about to begin. The theatre didn’t wait for anyone. Malachi rose from the table and made his way onto the stage. “Good afternoon, everyone. I want to thank you all for making it out to our auditions. Now to ensure we get a chance to see what everyone can do, we’ll be splitting you up. Those interested in a part in the play, you’ll be with me. Those interested in costume and makeup will be with Professor Peralta. Any interested in stage design, you’ll be with Professor Flamsteed. The latter two will be behind the curtains, with those acting obviously remaining here by the stage. Now if there are no questions, I’d like everyone who has prepared a scene to come sit up front. I’ll give you an extra 5 minutes to shake the nerves or get in a few lines.”

It was time to get this thing started.

Emzily 06-03-2021 08:56 PM

Merrrrrrlin, she WISHED she hadn’t bothered showing up. The nerves were insane, and the mass of students that were here had only made it worse. Why did she think she’d be the only one here? The only person here to take the lead role? Even her entrance today wasn’t dramatic compared to others in the room. Some seemed to have already started their audition!

Remy stood sheepishly at the back the whole time until Headmaster Trent greeted them. She considered going for the stage or costume area but she really had no idea what she was doing there.

GulP.

With her head held high, Remy’s shaky legs wobbled towards the front of the room with the headmaster, and she sat waiting to audition for a role in the play. She knew that the theatre industry was a tough one no matter if you were good or not.

astrocat 06-03-2021 09:00 PM

Ash smiled back at Cecelia. Ash assumed the smile was out of pity, seeing as she didn't know the girl enough for them to greet each other. "Hey." But she smiled and responded anyway. Look at how social she was. Not social enough to talk to Ingrid though. That girl was gonna barf sometime SOON, and Ash was gonna stay away until after that happened.

"Hey Claudine. I just wanna do art and like, stage design stuff. Kinda sounds like something you'd like." She shrugged. Claudine liked art, right? No pressure though. "I was thinking I might like to work the lights or something too, if I feel like it." She noticed Eden and Quinn too. She waved at them. "Hiii." Just look at how social she was being. "Nice hair Eden. Nice stack of clothes Quinn. Don't trip!" She laughed. Just look at how well she got along with her peers. Some of them, anyway.

Not Emmerson. Who coincidentally was basically smashing through the doors and being wayyy too dramatic. Ash could appreciate dramatic. But only in moderation. She just completely ignored the girl, feeling that it would be better for both of them. But jeez, if they both got the parts they wanted, Emmerson better not be micromanaging her set design or else. Because that would not end well.

Ash was relieved when the audition started. She headed towards Flamsteed, because STAGE DESIGN. Finally. Please could they get this over with so that she could do stage design and, more importantly, stay away from Cambridge. For the good of everybody involved.

Bryn 06-03-2021 09:32 PM

"Thanks Ash! I can do yours whenever you like." She turned to Claudine, who she had noticed around Ash a lot lately. "I can do your hair too, Claudine, any time! I'm building up my portfolio. I do nails too!" And she held it up. Beautiful, right? So polished and put together she was!!!!

OH MERLIN'S PANTS THE DEVIL HAD ARRIVED.

Ok, kind of dramatic, but Eden's whole face still squished up in disgust as Emmerson began shouting at them all. To the Ravenclaw's credit, she was quick to remember where she was and de-squishify herself. Eden was up to ANY challenge, and it would be a real flex if she could make that stage ready.

If Emmerson even got a part. If Eden even got a part.

The girl took a deep breath before heading behind the curtain with the other behind-the-scenes hopefuls. She specifically sought out her Charms professor. "Hi Professor Peralta! I brought my portfolio!"

The second year then took a place standing with all the other hopefuls for further instruction.

It was a shame she wouldn't get to show off her mAd sKiLLz™ to the perfect, beautiful, and multitalented potions professor, but hopefully things would go well and Professor Varma would see all her hard work on opening night.

SweetPeea 06-03-2021 09:57 PM

The redhead took in a deep breath before a smile crept onto her face as the Headmaster moved on to the stage to address everyone who had interest in partaking the school's production. She had chosen a seat beside her friend Gracelyn, who was not too far from an adorably dressed Cece and Kale (Hey friends; wink wink at Cece)

Faye listened to the Headmaster's instructions as he began to split everyone up into groups based on what they were interested in doing. She waited for the Headmaster to finish addressing everyone before she did as he had instructed those auditioning to come up front by the stage. The sixth year was then seen collecting her things before making her way towards the front. She'd heard his last words of kindness in giving everyone an extra five minutes to prepare which she was most appreciative of. Faye probably did not need the extra minutes for she'd been preparing a few pieces for today's auditions since she'd signed up, but in NO way was she complaining! It never hurt just to run through things and make sure everything came out correctly.

"Thank you Headmaster.." She smiled brightly before pulling out her pieces she'd prepared for today, immediately reciting them in her head until the actual auditions would begin.

LilFox06 06-03-2021 10:43 PM

Misa was ready for this. Being involved sounded like it would be a blast. After she arrived she sat near Ivy to await instructions. She then bit her lip after they were given. She had a decision to make. Did she want to work with costuming? She did love hair and make up and outfits. She thought she would be great at that. There was also an option for set design. She thought she had a great eye. And, of course, there was actually being in the play. Who didn't want to do that?

So she kind of stood there looking between the three professors. Maybe she'd just go where there was the least amount of people? Yeah. That would balance things right out. Or she'd just go wherever Florrie or Ivy dragged her. Being with friends was also an excellent option.

But before she knew it, she sat back down on the stage. Misa was apparently the most interested in acting.

Answers Evan and Ivy and mooooves over to Professor Peralta

Feeling slightly nauseous was somewhat a new feeling to her. Having sort of grown up in a closed circle with just her family around for the most part, Ingrid hadn’t spent a lot of time in front of large groups of people or with a lot of children her own age so Hogwarts really had kind of…hit her for six in her first year. Now, thankfully she was more used to it but the idea of being on stage and having all of those pairs of eyes on her, staring, unblinking like some kind of monster was startling.

Turning to the voice of the person who’d asked if she was okay, she simply nodded for a moment and continued the forced, almost painful smile that she’d been presenting to everyone as she made her way over. “I’m f-fine Evan. Thank you. Are you going to be acting or…” but what else there was to do she wasn’t exactly sure. She’d never been part of anything of the sort before. EVER!

Maybe her paleness was a little more ghostly than she’d thought because Ivy was the next to check up on her. “I think so, thanks Ivy. I…felt a little sick that’s all,” her voice lowering now as she continued “It was just…there’s so many people and professors here and headmasters. And they just STARE and JUDGE!” like a pack of owls.

Upon hearing Headmaster Trent’s words, Ingrid turned away ever so slightly to listen and made a very quick decision to turn towards where those who wanted to be in costume design were required to go. No one wanted to see a vomit fountain on stage. Although…there were one or two students that she wouldn’t have minded throwing up over.

With her eyes instantly following the figure of Professor Peralta, Ingrid moved slowly over to her and the curtain where they were told to be. “Uhh…Professor, I’ve actually been working on sketches of clothes and designs so I’d love to try out for the costume design job. Role. Thingy. Please” mainly because she loved to draw and also, it was the only thing that she’d actually be good at. Pulling her backpack from her shoulders, she brushed her long, black hair out of her face and pulled her sketchbook from it, ready to show the professor if need be.

Truth be told, Atlas wasn't sure that he actually wanted to do this but Aries had talked him into it and once they made a promise to each other...there was just no turning back nor breaking that promise. Not even if it resulted in broken bones, which had happened from time to time. Hopefully not with this though.

Baseball cap on backwards and hands shoved into his pockets, there was some reluctance in moving away from his brother but there was also relief since he got to be with Auntie June.

Coincidence that her and Professor Schmoe were here doing the play together? The Gryffindor thought NOT.

That sinking feeling, however, intensified seeing that Ashley was joining. But just because she made him feel uncomfortable and confused didn't mean they couldn't work together. Atlas worked best when there was a set series of things to accomplish - especially if it was something he was interested in.

And hopefully he was interested in it...another thing that was hard to gauge since he didn't even know what production they were doing. If it was something that only required painting scenery and collecting props...he may as well just leave now.

"Au---Professor June?" Professor Flamsteed was what he had been aiming for but got tongue-tied in his thoughts. "...will there be a need for special effects?" If not...he could maybe just be the kid who opened and closed the curtain.

These 2 aren't late! I'm just slow xD

Norman had to admit he felt more than a little out of his depth here. He wasn’t much for acting or make-up and costumes… or, well artsy stuff in general. Given his transfiguration background and his brief time working as a vanishing cabinet maker (after the whole wife died & life took a downward spiral thing), he thought his skills would be best suited to special effects and set design, if anything, but he wasn’t sure how much use he’d be. Mainly, he’d just signed up for this thing to help the kids. They needed this to take their minds off the trauma from last term!

He’d said hello to his colleagues and students alike upon arrival and took a seat in one of the chairs, quietly observing the students’ interactions until Malachi started things off. Knowing absolutely nothing about the other two areas, he decided to stick with June’s group. “Don’t mind me,” he said, giving the woman a respectful nod. “I’m just here to observe.” Of course, he would gladly help if needed, but for now, he would defer to her.

Heath took a deep breath. No matter how many times he’d done this before, there was always a little bit of nerves before an audition. His dark eyes scanned the room, taking in all the people gathered. Wow, he never knew there were so many people at Hogwarts who were interested in acting! Although he was seated near Claudine, Ash, Fiona, Quinn, and Eden, he was too distracted with late-minute preparation to offer more than a “Hi, all” by way of greeting. He rummaged through his bag to make sure he had everything. Script? Check. Song music? Check. Well, actually he had no idea if he’d need a song, but since almost every other audition he’d attended required a monologue and a song, it couldn’t hurt.

Come to think of it, he had no idea what the tone of this play was going to be either… which made picking the right materials a lot harder. Just to be safe, he’d chosen something with a wide range of emotion. He picked up his book - basically Star Wars rewritten into play format, one his dad had given him for his last birthday before Rosier happened - and opened to the page containing his monologue, mumbling lines under his breath. His head jerked up at the sound of Headmaster Trent’s voice, and he looked to the man, hanging on to his every word.

There was no need to deliberate which group to join. Heath knew what he was doing! As he watched the group start to go their separate ways, he waved to Ash and Eden. “Break a leg, you two!” he said. It only just then occurred to them that they might not speak theatre, so he added, “Theatre saying - it means, ‘good luck’.”

Rising from his seat, he looked to the other three people seated near him, wondering where they’d go from here. If he knew Claudine half as well as he thought he did, she’d go for something artsy like set design. Quinn… probably costumes, if the bundle of clothes was anything to go by. As for Fiona, he had no idea which she’d try out for. “Anyone joining me at the front?” he asked, staring toward Headmaster Trent’s group.

Lisa looked up from her notebook to find an Avalon addressing her. She offered her a warm smile and a proud nod. “I am! I have a few in mind. I’m thinking I should go for comedic. What do you think?” she asked with a giggle as she looked up from her book once more. Oh! Was Avalon auditioning? “What are you planning on auditioning with?

And before she could ask any more questions or go poke her brother in the side, Emerson Cambridge entered rather loudly and proudly. Wow. Her confidence was something else. She had jumped at the doors banging loudly and just watched her enter in. Wow. literal #goals. She was about to applaud said entrance when Headmaster Trent started speaking and explaining the process.

Lisa was here to audition so she was going to be with Trent.

She saw Heath and gave him a happy wave and a curious look. “What are you auditioning with?” she asked the older Ravenclaw. “Is it..... OUR favourite series of all time...” Y’know the one with the Stars, a Jedi, and a Chewie. Oh and a Princess and Han Solo too. :eyebrows: If so, she couldn’t wait to see his audition!

She continued scanning the room until she saw Misa. The littlest Nam made a BEELINE for her. Plopping down next to her, she smiled with eyes as wide as saucers. “Haaai. Are you auditioning? What with?” Lisa couldn’t wait to hear what she was doing. She was so so excited to see Misa auditioning.

"Oh! Er, thanks, Eden." Quinn smiled as Eden brought his things back over. Maybe... he didn't really need to bring this much stuff... but he wanted to show off what he could do!

He also had to stifle his laughter when Emmerson made her, uh... "grand" entrance. He didn't stifle it very well, however... maybe on purpose, but who knew for sure?

He got up with his heap of clothing after the Headmaster's announcement. "Uh... I think I'll be alright..!" he said in response to Ash's joke, because he did feel as though there was a fairly real danger of tripping. "Sorry, Heath, the stage... isn't for me, I don't think," Quinn called over his shoulder as he waddled backstage after Eden, trying to make sure he didn't drop anything else.

He made it over to Professor Peralta's table with his clothes. "Hi, Professor! I figured I could be part of the costume design team because, well..." he lifted the large ball of knitted things in front of him a little higher, "...I can knit! And I know a little bit of sewing! Not, um... not enough for a whole garment, but... minor fixes and stuff! B-but I'm more confident with my knitting, see, look I can make socks—" Quinn pulled out a sock from the large mound, which was apparently an integral part of the structural integrity of the thing seeing as everything that was once in his arms tumbled to the ground. Socks, knit caps, mittens, scarves, jumpers and an assortment of little accessories spreading across the floor in front of the table. "Ah... oops..." Quinn bent down and started picking up his things.

With this falling of the clothes came a larger field of view, including the table where Professor Flamsteed was talking with those who were auditioning for the stage crew. And, of course, among them—Atlas. Quinn reddened and looked away quickly, busying himself even more with picking up his clothes, doing his best to get it high enough to cover his face.

been here the whole time *whistles*

There was absolutely zero chance of Margaret standing up in front of everybody and reciting any lines. So while she was here, she immediately made a beeline for Professor Peralta when Trent announced she'd be leading up the costumes. She gathered with Quinn, Eden and Ingrid, giving the charms professor and three Ravenclaws an eager smile before ducking her head and sticking her hands in her pockets, uncharacteristically quiet because she felt a little out of place.

She hadn't prepared any sketches or example costumes. She just wanted to help with the sewing, or magic, or whatever.

Sat slouched in their seat, head propped on a fist, Nem watched Cambridge - their very own little brother's very own little girlfriend - make her grand whatever, flouncing theatrically onto the stage. Times like these, Nem understood less than ever about the world.

When all was called to order, Nem stayed put with the Headsman's group. They were already sitting front and more or less centre, no need to move along anywhere, not that they'd prepared a scene, or anything. Just sitting. Watching. Unobtrusive. Silent spectre spectator.

feeheeheeny 06-04-2021 06:51 AM

Having Kiz there was nice, and Teddy comfortably put an arm around her shoulders when she sat in between Fi and him, shifting to make more room for her. He'd smiled at Faye when she joined the group, quirked an eyebrow at the unexpected entrance of one Nemesis Upstead, and chuckled reluctantly at Emm's spectacle, subconsciously lifting his arm from around Kiz. His sister's long-time best friend was... a handful, Teddy had known that for eons, but her unashamed theatrics in front of everyone, especially the Headmaster, plagued him with some secondhand embarrassment.

He deeply admired her confidence, but not her narcissism.

His attention turning to the Headmaster, Teddy gave a low hum of acknowledgement at the words prepared a scene. He had known several of his friends were going to have something ready to perform, but he hadn't seen that as a requirement. Probably no big deal - he was headed for Trent's group with his sisters to be considered for a role or whatever, but he just wasn't meant for the front, exactly, then, as the prepared ones would go first? He could maybe just sit further back and wing it. It was fine.

lazykitty 06-04-2021 02:36 PM

The person made up like a deer now following Professor Peralta? Yeah, that was Dia. She’d felt she’d needed further proof of her makeup prowess besides the face charts she carried in her hands and she really didn’t have anyone she could use as a model besides herself. So, here she was, feeling slightly silly (though less silly than when she’d first left the common room) in full makeup.

”I have face charts for samples of my work,” she spoke up, since that’s apparently what they were doing. ”And obviously……” she continued, indicating her face. Because she obviously didn’t just walk around like this everyday.

TakemetotheBurrow 06-04-2021 06:49 PM

For all the costume and makeup friends! (cece will be in my next post :3)

June was right, this was going to be entertaining. The kids were characters already, so seeing them put on an act was going to be really comical. The brunette offered Shreya a smile when she joined them, mentally ticking off staff members in her head. That meant they were all here, yes? And look, Finneas was auditioning? Neva had a soft spot for the man-boy in her heart after last term and she gave him an encouraging, and very un-Neva-like thumbs up. He had this.

...Oh no. "Miss luck, if you're feeling like you might throw up, please find a seat closer to a bin." They hadn't even started yet and this was not what she had in mind when she'd been thinking about being entertained. Emmerson's entrance, on the other hand, came close. Talk about personality. Neva hid a smile behind her hand, knowing Malachi would have his hands full with that one. Good luck to him if she didn't get the part she wanted.

Right, splitting off. "Good luck," She offered the other staff before grabbing her clip board and heading off to meet with the costume and design hopefuls.

She gave everyone a few minutes to gather around, waiting until the appointed time before addressing the group of students with a smile.

"I'm pleased to see some of you have prepared ahead of time for this, both on paper and on your actual faces." She gave Miss Wolff an amused look and then indicated the space behind her. "But we're actually going to do a little bit of a test run today, get those creative juices flowing. If you're interested in costume work, we've got a trunk full of all different articles of clothing and props to complete an outfit. I'd like you to dress up one of the mannequins using whatever you can find and then tell me about the character you've designed the outfit around. You may use magic to help with the process. As for those interested in makeup, I've brought along everything you might need to create a look. Your task is pretty much the same. You'll create a makeup look on one of the mannequin head's set out on the table, and then tell me what character you had in mind when you created the look and why it works." Easy enough, right?

"This is supposed to be fun, so please don't stress yourselves out over it. Do the best you can and please let me know when you've completed your look so we can chat." No one here was feeling like they were going to puke, right? No? Good. "Okay, you can get started when you're ready."

hanging with the actor peeps

Kale Trent was here. He was queer. And he was ready to boogie down or do whatever it was that the audition committee needed from him. Within reason. Taking his shirt off was negotiable, but he absolutely would not be cutting his hair. Plz and thnx.

He dimpled when he saw a Cece and made the executive decision in his brain NOT to address how awkward she got around his Dad. Those were thoughts he couldn't deal with today, brain. So, she got a cheek!kiss as a way of hello.

AND THEN THINGS WERE STARTING. 4 REAL.

The sixth year was a wiggly boi. Not to shake out his nerves. Kales didn't really get nervous, but they sure as H E C K got pumped. He had all this extra energy and he didn't know what to DO-O-O with it all. Shake shake shake.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

See? Cambridge had the spirit!

Imsosikk07 06-04-2021 11:12 PM

Yeah, has totally been here the entire time :) (rl madness consumed me lately oops)

Well she was here. She was quiet, possibly shaking a bit from nerves and fear about this, but she was here. So many students were here as well so she didn't feel completely weirded out by being here. Now, why is she auditioning you may ask? She's finally try to break out of her shell and we are all here for it. This is her Seventh Year and she wants to live it to the best to her abilities before she graduates from Hogwarts and goes out into the real world. When Headmaster Trent entered, Aibhi did give a nod of acknowledgement but didn't want to show any nerves or fear in her eyes to him. Her leg began to shake a bit and quickly placed her one hand onto her knee to try and stop it from shaking, but it kept going. Come on, Aibhi...nothing to be nervous about here. This is supposed to be fun. Have fun with this today.

As far as having anything prepared? Heh...weeeeeeell...that was a different story. She had never done anything like this before so she already was at a disadvantage, but as her dad always said "DON'T KNOCK IT UNTIL YOU'VE TRIED IT! And she was going to live by that...and many other mottos her dad drilled into her brain. Now, all she can do...was wait for her name to be called and then...we'll see where it goes....

DaniDiNardo 06-05-2021 01:27 AM

Acting peeps

Were they ready? Were some of them really going to pass out, throw up or both? Was he going to wait around to find out? Nope. The show had to go on and if they thought the pressure of auditions was bad, they were in for a rude awakening when it came time for the real performance. It was good to get this time to observe them before they began. It was already giving him some ideas of who was less likely to buckle under the bold lights of he stage.

That was very important in the theatre.

“Right, I think we can begin.” Malachi reached for the clipboard on the table and held it up to get a better look. “We’ll start by seeing what you have prepared. After, I’ll give a few exercises and see how well you handle them. When I call your name, please go up onto the stage and show me what you’ve got. If you have nothing, shame on you it’s a bad start BUT you may try to find a scene from one of the scripts up there on the stage.”

He was as excited as they were nervous.

Ooc: You don’t actually have to wait for your name, just post assuming it’s been called :) I’ll be out all day tomorrow but should be able to move us by Sunday onto the exercises.

Chelliephone 06-05-2021 01:47 AM

Evan smiled at Ivy when she approached as well, before turning his attention back to Ingrid. He was still skeptical when she said she was fine, but hearing her explanation to Ivy he could definitely understand the nerves. Hopefully she didn't get actually sick or anything... That would probably embarrass her more than even messing up a line or anything like that. "Stagehand. Maybe helping move sets between curtains or.. something." Or if it had any musical numbers he could help people train with dances. Practicing with Chase and Noah all the time had made him decent. "Best of luck." He had wondered if she would be acting, but she moved towards Professor Peralta which hopefully would calm her nerves some as well.

Hearing the instructions on where to go, after of course eying the Gryffindor girl's entrance because how could one miss it, Evan made his way over towards Professor Flamsteed and uh.. Dinosaur Flamsteed because he had no idea which one it was. "Hello Professor. I'm willing to go wherever needed." If... somewhere was even actually needed. Yikes.

SilverTiger 06-05-2021 02:10 AM

not typing the whole monologue up but yes she says it all *hence the link* <3

As people had continued to filter in, Gracelyn had been reciting various things in her head from the pages she held, simply to see what felt right and also as yet another distraction from nerves. The Jameses had joined them, Phoebe and Teddy getting a smile even as the younger James had joined them too, followed by a dramatic entrance from Emmerson and the appearance of Faye. Her dormie got a grin, but otherwise Gracelyn had stayed quiet, aside from the lines running through her head, until the headmaster had spoken again and established how the auditions would be going. So actors were with him, while the stage crew hopefuls were with others. She knew where she was headed, along with basically the entire group he had aligned herself with. The acting hopefuls.

By the time Headmaster Trent had spoken again, she had decided on one of the monologues her aunt had sent her. Since obviously she hadn’t had time to work on a piece with anyone else, a monologue would have to do. At least until the exercises he had spoken of.

Waiting for her name had been taken up with more internal recitation. Practice made perfect, after all. She knew that from her athletic pursuits. Gymnastics and dance obviously needed practice to be good, so acting ought to be the same. But soon enough (and part of her wondered if they were going about it alphabetically) she heard her name called and she stepped forward onto the stage.

“I’m going to do a monologue from one of Shakespeare’s plays,” she began, just in case it was appropriate to establish what she was doing, before continuing.

“Since what I am to say must be but that…”

Watson 06-05-2021 04:01 AM

Ooh Shakespeare. Lisa recognized this monologue. She had seen this play once before. She watched Gracelyn, noting her movements, gestures, and speaking patterns. She observed all. Once the monologue was over, Lisa decided to take a chance.

She shut her book closed, placed it behind her, and stood up. She pinched the bridge of her nose momentarily. Taking a deep breath, she walked over to the center after Gracelyn had gone and prepared herself mentally. She turned around, facing the opposite direction of Trent and the rest of the actor group, letting her head hang as she waited a moment.

And then Lisa began. She gave no introduction to what she was doing, who she was playing, or who it was written by. She went for it. In the moment, it just felt so right.

She lifted her head up slowly and made her posture light and flighty. She was Oberon’s right hand sprite. Mischievous, energetic, and light. She moved her arms as if she was moving her hands through water and then she stopped, folded her arms, and began her monologue. “If we shadows have offended... ” she turned to the group, eyes wide with sorrow and fear that she had genuinely offended before a slight smirk curled at her lips. “Think... but this... and all is mended. That you,” she made eloped at Kale Trent at this point in time before glancing to look at Gracelyn. “have slumbered here while these,” She waved her hand in the air as if dispelling the visions in front of her as if they were smoke. “visions did appear.” Looking to Headmaster Trent, she continued. “And while this weak and idle theme...” Maniacal and amused grin as she lowered her voice and waved her hand brushing off the next phrase as if it were water off a ducks back. “No more yielding than a dream.

If the play had been not to the audience’s liking then it was a dream after all. If only life could be like this at times....

She paused before making her way downstage or what would have been downstage to talk to her audience that she so had offended. “Gentles.. do not reprehend. If you pardon, we will mend.” Small earnest smile as if she were trying to gain their trust and forgiveness in this moment to make amends. Hand to her chest as she referenced herself as Puck. “And as I am an honest Puck...” Lisa waggled her index finger as if thinking- no- mischievously plotting. “If we have unearned luck now to escape the serpents tongue. We shall make amendserr long.....ELSE...” Pause. Wide innocent eyes before she smirked. “Else Puck a liar call.” Beat.

So goodnight onto you all.” Taking a step further downstage and extending her hands to the audience. Eyes pleading. “Give me your hands if we be friends and,” with body language gesturing to herself as she clasped her hands together. “Robin shall restore amends.

She stayed in her spotlight for a fleeting moment longer with her eyes full of promise that the audience would trust her, as their Puck, before she bowed her head to her audience and exited the stage. “Thank you.

ArianaBlack 06-05-2021 05:30 AM

Kinsay caught Nem’s greeting and wiggled a finger at him in return, before turning back to snuggle up against Teddy’s shoulder. And then there was Emm. Emm who was MEANT to be on stage. Kizzy applauded quietly after her best friend’s delightfully dramatic entrance, only to wince slightly when Headmaster Trent called her out for it.

But now she was waiting for instructions, her head perking up slightly at the mention of costumes and set design. Kinsay wanted to do those things. But she was also well aware that Emmerson wanted them to have roles in the play together. And even though no one was forcing her to, Kizzy reaaaaaaally didn’t want to risk disappointing anyone. She had already caused enough upset this year to last her an entire lifetime. So instead of getting up to join the other groups behind the stage, she stayed where she was with all her friends who were interested in acting. Maybe this would be fine. Maybe she wouldn’t even get a part and she’d be able to help with costumes by default. Was it bad to hope this? Because it was making her feel guilty and all sorts of uneasy.

It helped that she didn't have to go first. But Gracelyn did such a good job and then Lisa (A FIRST YEAR) went up and did an even better job and and and. How was Kinsay supposed to follow them!? This was horrible. So when it was her turn to walk up to the stage, she did so very nervously.

Um.

*Gulp*

”My name is Kinsay James and …. um. And I’m going to audition with a monologue by Princess Jasmine in the. Um. In Aladdin.” She played with her fidget necklace as she took a moment to collect herself. Not feeling at all confident, she began quietly, ”I just … I just… I um.” Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no. This was already a disaster. ”............ Can I start over?”

She paused a little while, very much aware that she was taking up everyone’s time. ”I.. I just told him the truth.” And step forward. ”Um. That if he marries me, he’ll get… he’ll get an equal partner with an equal say!” She knew all the lines, this wasn’t the problem. ”Why do I have to marry at all?!” She threw her hands into the air, finally starting to settle into the scene. Jasmine was one of her favorite characters ever. She could do this. She could, she could, she could.

”What’s wrong with a woman running the kingdom?!” Her voice was louder and steadier now. ”If I have to marry someone I don’t love, then maybe I don’t want to be a princess anymore!!!”

And. Scene. Thank Circe.

…….

”Um. That’s it. Thanks.” After a QUICK bow she immediately scurried off the stage and went back to her seat, where she sunk ALL THE WAY DOWN. That was the worst thing she had ever done.

Ginevra 06-05-2021 07:53 AM

When Headmaster Trent called her name, Fiona made her way up to the stage, her body not giving any indication of her nerves. "Hey there. I'm Fiona Jenovick and I'll be performing my favourite poem which is Splendour in the Grass as a Shakespeare-inspired monologue, I guess."

Taking in a small breath, she began. "What though the radiance which was once so bright. Be now forever taken from my sight." Fiona decided it was best to annunciate her words more and to emote her body. The Snakette continued her audition. "Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendour in the grass. Of glory in the flower. We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind. In the primal sympathy which having been must ever be. In the soothing thoughts that spring out of human suffering. In the faith that looks through death, in years that bring the philosophic mind."

After she was done, Fiona gave a quick bow and thanks to the audience before sitting back in her seat.

pundantic 06-05-2021 01:14 PM

Kale Trent loved the THEATRE. He loved the energy of actors and people having the courage to be vulnerable on stage even when it was hard, especially when it was hard. So, after each person performed, Kale launched to his feet and gave them a loud round of cheers, some feet thumbing, a whistle or two to be kind. Was it too much? NEVAH!

As he marched up to the stage, he managed to wink at Kinsay who looked a little down. He mouthed, “You did great!” And she got some encouraging thumbs up, too. Nobody was alone today cuz they were all doing this together.

When his feet touched the stage, Kale Trent clicked his heels together, July Garland eat your heart out, and dimpled at the auditioner. “Hello, sir.” Hehe. “My name is Kale Alexander Trent. And I will be performing a musical comedy masterpiece from Singin’ In the Rain— Make ‘Em Laugh.”

He drew his wand and flicked it in the air and music filled the stage area. It was the kind of quick, remarkable magic that he was never really able to conjure in classes. Mostly cuz nothing was as high stakes as a MUSICAL NUMBER!

The sixth year cleared his throat and drew a hat from his back pocket. Props. Of course he had those. He sat in a pretty bevel, think Rockette, and batted his eyelids prettily. “Though the world is so full of a number things, I know we should all be as happy as. But are we?” Blam. “No!” Second foot stomp. ”Definitely no!” Pose of despair. “DeCIDEDLY NO!”

Pause for drama.

Kale ran through the next section, going faster and faster with each word. His eye eyebrows waggled and lips curled upwards in a defiant kind of humour. ”Short people have long faces and long people have short faces. Big people have little humor. And little people have no humor at all!” Kale gasped, gulping down air. “And in the words of that immortal buddy Samuel J. Snodgrass, as he was about to be lead to the guillotine:”

He winked at Ivy. ”MAKE ‘EM LAUGH! MAKE ‘EM LAUGH....” And just like that, Kale was off to the races performing. The sixth year felt like he could be utterly himself on stage, ridiculousness and all. As he sang, working through the number, he was all kinds of big and brash and silly. He was leaping across the stage. Dropping to his knees. Hamming it up to the extreme. He pulled his hat down over his eyes and pretended to walk into walls with dramatic, perfectly choreographed feints.

The sixth year even jumped down into the crowd at one point and started playing with his peers. He draped himself across Teddy’s lap and honked his nose. He fanned Gracelyn with his floppy hat. And playfully swatted his Dad on the shoulder with it as he travelled back up to the stage for his B I G F I N I S H!!!

“Make ‘em laugh!” He sang, flipping mid-air. ”Make ‘em laugh.” Spin spin spin. ”MAKE ‘EM LAAAAAaaaaaAAAAAAUGH!” BIG ARMS. BIG FINISH.

Kale tumbled backward and fell flat on his back. TA DA!

FRIENDS!

And what was even better, friends with snacks (thank you, Gracelyn)! Cece felt that much better knowing she had supporters around her (and something to discreetly munch on). Like, even if she was the absolute worst ever, she knew they’d still smile and have her back. It was a good feeling. One she wished she could bottle and sell.

Phoebe’s dramatic arrival earned a smile, one that grew as her twin joined the party and they decided she was the smartest. Not true, of course, but she blew them kisses anyway. She was excited to see them perform. Kinsay and Emm, too. And Faye. If she was being honest, out of the whole group, Pheebs and Kale were perfect for this. Dramatic in different ways and confident and they captured attention, y’know? If she could channel even a little bit of that during her audition, she’d be golden.

The blonde moved up to the front of the theater as instructed and watched as one after another, those around her auditioned. She clapped and smiled and even felt a little bit emotional here and there. And that was what she liked about all this acting stuff. You could get lost in it for a while. And Cece didn’t mind getting lost. It’s why Alice was so perfect for her.

Oh. Okay, Kale Trent. Just blooooowing the competition away. Cece was grinning by the end of his performance and clapping like mad. Proud was an excellent way to describe what she was feeling. Also nervous. How was she meant to go on after that?

...

”Hello, I’m Cecelia Summers and I’ll be performing a little bit from Alice in Wonderland. Oh! Um-it’s the Tim Nelson one.” She smiled a bit sheepishly and then closed her eyes for a moment, letting herself get into character. She was lost in a strange world with wonderfully strange creatures and she herself felt very strange indeed.

”Which way, oh! Oh no, nothing looks familiar. Oh, I’m lost!” Cecelia moved towards the right side of the stage, only to look confused and glance back over her shoulder. Let out a soft sigh. Resolve herself and stand up straighter. Well when one’s lost I suppose it’s good advice to stay where you are until someone finds you.” She nodded her head, as if she’d decided, and made to sit down..only to shake her head and start walking again. ”But, who would think to look for me here? Let me think..” She stepped forward, forehead scrunched in concentration. ”Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I’m not the same...the next question is, who am I?” The sixth year made eye contact with Headmaster Trent, and it was a look full of innocence and uncertainty. Then she started to sing. Kale had said it might be a musical, after all, and even though her voice wasn’t strong, it could be sweet.

”Who am I and what has happened here? What magic has just begun? I have never talked to flowers before..or to rabbits on the run..” She smiled a little in disbelief and continued until the song ended. And she’d done it. And she blushed...and then she bit her lip.

”And scene. Thanks for your time..” Cece smiled and then headed off for her seat, happy to have done that. Happier it was done.

Stage design ^_^

Claudine shot a smile at Darius, also wondering what her fellow Slytherin was keen in participating in. Soon-ish she’d find out, she supposed. “Hi, Eden. Wow. Nice hair style.” She meant it! “Did you do that yourself?” That offer though! Claudine was thrilled and hoped it reflected on her face. “I’ll take you up on that, Eden. Sometime soon too.” Was Fiona nervous? Or had Claudine simply imagined the nervous quake to the voice? “You alright?” she asked with concern. She peered about after hearing the familiar voice that was Quinn’s. “Hi, Quinn. That’s a lot of yarn.” No, there was no judging here. “Hi, you.” Claudine mouthed that to Heath who happened to be sitting away from her. She was pretty sure he was one hundred percent ready for this audition.

The sixth year, after recovering from Emmerson’s idramatic arrival, fixed her gaze on Trent. Stage design! That was her! That meant she’d be with Flamsteed. “We’d better get to Flamsteed, Ash.” Because her younger friend was right: stage design was exactly what she wanted to do. "Catch you guys later.” The Snakette deliberately made her way over to the boyfriend. “Break a leg,’’ she told him, having picked up on that phrase sometime back because of him. She stood on tiptoes to give him a quick peck on the cheek. Yes, PDA was still weird for him but whatever. She was being too supportive of Heath to care. And with that, she followed Ashley.

“Hi, Professors.” In addition to Flamsteed, Carton was there. Oh. Evan also. She gave him a smile.

FoR wHo CoULd eVeR LeARn tO LoVE a bEaST (pretend it's a stage script shhh)

The main thing Nem was getting from all this was that stage acting was so much more than real acting, and that was not a good thing. There was a lot of shouting - projection, whatever, a skill Nem hardly needed to know and therefore never learned - and general exaggeration, which they could do just fine, but avoided as a general rule.

Voice, movement, the acting itself, the music, plus whatever Trent was doing, everything was so much bigger than it needed to be; for a moment, Nem felt only a flare of disdain, which quickly faded, allowing them to work on analysing what they could observe. Shortly thereafter, they lapsed into boredom. They weren't going to get what they came here for, this was practically an entirely different skillset. Disengaging, Nem slumped back in their seat, resorted to manipulating the handful of metal matchsticks they carried everywhere with them, though, at that point, there was no reason to stay.

Their name was called. "I'm good," Nem said, pushing to their feet and returning the metal pieces to their pocket, intending to leave instead. Except, two seconds later, they abruptly changed their tune. "Actually, give me a minute." May as well; already here and everything. They'd pass on the theatricality and the major dramatics, not wanting a part in this thing after all, but for now it was something to do.

Nem climbed up onto the stage and paused by the pile of scripts, disinterestedly shuffling through before choosing one at random. Huh. This would work. Tale as old as time. Nem was vaguely familiar with it, though it had been years and years since they'd been subjected to any version of it. They straightened and moved to centre stage, flicking through the pages for just the right scene, and took a moment to get familiar with the lines. Yeah, yeah, shame on them, but it wasn't long at all before they were ready to go.

No introductions needed. No explanations. Nem just drew their wand and non-verbally cast a very mild Sonorus at their throat - no need for projection when they had magic - and launched right into it, keeping their wand in hand the entire time, and the script in the other. They played two parts, no warning, no turning this way or that to indicate a different role - they barely moved from where they started on the stage - no use of props, only a shift of demeanour each time.

Nem took a step forward, looking up and out, as though at the stars. "I haven't danced in years... I'd almost forgotten the feeling." They smiled, took a deep, contented breath, let it out again. A long pause, a moment of deliberation, uncertainty, and then determination passed over their features. They spoke again, lowering their gaze as though addressing someone directly ahead, their tone just short of offhand, tinged with sadness, but mostly stark with bracing acceptance of an unhappy truth. "It's foolish, I suppose... for a creature like me to hope that one day he might earn your affection." Another pause, and they looked down.

And then ahead again, unsure and undeterred in equal measure. "I don't know..."

Nem's eyes widened in surprise, and they pulled away slightly, taken aback, but subtle. "Really? So... you think you could be happy here?" They frowned for a split second, uncertain, disbelieving, not daring to hope.

And then shifted again, expression softening, a sad smile. "Could anybody be happy... if they aren't free?" Nem looked up again at the 'stars', the smile gone, an expression of creeping desolation in its place. They let the silence hang in the air for a moment - a quick glance at the script, then back up to continue the scene. "My father taught me to dance. I used to step on his toes a lot." Another small smile.

Which then changed, from wistful back to sad, but now strained too. Laden with guilt. "You must miss him."

The smile disappeared, they turned bereft, near grief-stricken, swallowed an imaginary lump in their throat and nodded. Spoke softly - though naturally their voice still carried, thanks to the charm. "Very much."

Once again, their whole demeanour changed, and they considered the issue, deliberated, suddenly decided, made their offer almost eagerly. "Would you like to see him?"

After one last pause, their expression cleared again, and they were Nemesis Upstead once more. Scene finished, they wordlessly headed for the edge of the stage, performed a quick Quietus on their throat, and dropped the script back onto the pile they'd collected it from. With a nimble two-footed hop, they jumped down from the stage, and returned to slump in their seat again.

There was so much excitement, Shreya almost didn't know where to start. Of course, she wanted to watch the auditions. But she also wanted to observe the stage crew. She had only ever acted in Muggle productions before, and she was looking forward to what magic could bring to the set. So she joined June's group for now, taking a spot by Norman. She kept one ear open for the monologues though—just in case she heard anything interesting from the thespians.

Shreya was content to observe and let June take the lead. It gave her more time to think of set and costume design ideas, which she occasionally jotted down on her clipboard as they came to her. "I'm glad you're here. Transfiguration could be a huge help in this department," Shreya mentioned to Norman. In Muggle theater, they relied on several huge, heavy set pieces. Transfiguration would surely make the process a lot easier...and more intricate.

Avalon smiled back at Lisa as she flipped through a few monologues. How these actors and actresses managed to read these scripts cold—without much preparation at all—was beyond her. "I think a comedic script would be perfect you for. Something light, airy, and happy! I'm excited to watch." She gave her housemate an encouraging nod. A play with a bunch of Ravenclaws as the leads? Now that would be a real house pride moment.

Once they were split up, Avalon headed over to Professor Peralta's group, trunk in tow. She found a spot near Eden and Ingrid, particularly interested in the latter's sketchbook. "I'd love to see your designs someday! Maybe we can work together on an outfit sometime," she whispered to the third year, pointing to her own sketchbook in return. Fashion design was always more fun when you could combine creative ideas.

She got to work once the Charms professor gave the directions, rummaging through her own trunk and the one provided to them to find some inspiring materials. Settling on a glittery piece of pastel tulle, Avalon figured that she would design a costume for a fairy. She whipped out her sketchbook and used the pencil tucked behind her ear to map out a general design—her fairy needed a pretty dress, iridescent wings, and lots of sparkles.

What a pleasure it was to see so many people that wanted to be involved in the theatre, that also involved everyone who would be working behind the scenes so that meant that EVERYONE WAS IMPORTANT.

Faye was very excited to see so many familiar faces today, she knew everyone was going to do a great job. Though she would say, the one she was not expecting to see there was Teddy, which caused her to pause and smile at him when their eyes had met, giving him a wave. She lingered there briefly for a moment before she had been brought back into reality when she noticed the Headmaster had begun the auditions. Stealing another quick glance back at Teddy before finally turning her full attention back towards the stage, trying to get back into the proper mindset.

.......

Merlin's Beard. There was no denying the TALENT in this school, it was so obvious. Faye was thoroughly impressed by every performance she had seen up on that stage, and she was definitely proud of every person who performed, especially little Kinsay James. Showing her full support with uproarious applause once each performance had completed. For example...Ummm.....Hello Kale? Is this a West End Stage performance? WONDERFUL! And no doubt, Cece looking ever so adorable on that stage. How could anyone take their eyes off these talented performers?

Faye was feeling her heart quicken at the anticipation until it was finally her turn to take the stage. The sixth year made her way up the stairs until she had taken center stage to introduce herself. She cleared her throat to make sure she spoke clearly, "Hello, my name is Faye Asztalos. And I should like to perform a monologue from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.." Smiling brightly towards the Headmaster before giving a firm nod to center herself mentally before completely letting the scenery in her head take over.

In an instant her facial expression went from calm to a clear realization of betrayal as she stared at three very distinct people on the stage with her (in her mind of course, because acting) "LO...She is one of this confederacy!" Nodding her head in realization before she continues, knowing what's going on here. "Now I perceive they have conjoin'd all THREE to fashion this false sport, in spite of me. Injurious Hermia! Most ungrateful maid! Have you conspired, have you with these contrived to bait me with this foul derision?" Her voice a bit calmer as if she were trying to recall on simpler times sounding like a hurt friend. "Is all the counsel that we two have shared, the sisters' vows, the hours that we have spent, when we have chid the hasty-footed time for parting us, --O, is it all forgot?" Trying to fight back tears as she continued, "All school-days' friendship, childhood innocence?" The redhead paused briefly as if trying to find the words.

Faye took a step towards the invisible Hermia before continuing in an earnest demeanor, "We, Hermia, like two artificial gods, have with our needles created both one flower, both on one sampler, sitting on one cushion, both warbling of one song, both in one key, as if our hands, our sides, voices and minds, had been incorporate. So we grow together," The redhead could be seen bringing her hands together meaning to represent the two friends as one speaking with a bit of eagerness in her voice, "Like to a double cherry, seeming parted, but yet an union in partition; Two lovely berries moulded on one stem; So, with two seeming bodies, but one heart; Two of the first, like coats in heraldry, due but to one and crowned with one crest.." Faye slowly bringing one hand over her heart before her eyes traveled out beyond the people watching her in the seats seeming as if the scene had ended.

However, it was not quite finished and this content state would not last long for she was immediately reverted back into that mentality of a betrayed friend as her voice carried out to finish her final words, "And will you rent our ancient love asunder, to join with MEN in scorning your poor friend?!" She shook her head before her voice changed to a firmer tone, "It is not friendly, 'tis not maidenly; Our gender, as well as I, may chide you for it, though I alone do feel the injury.."

And with that she was finished, but she remained in character for a few more more beats before eventually smiling at the Headmaster, letting him know she had finished. "Thank you sir.." Politely bowing her head before moving to make her way off the stage so that the next person might be able to audition. She settled in to her seat with a small smile feeling happy that she had successfully remembered every line, hoping she'd performed well enough.

If you have nothing, shame on you, it’s a bad start. Teddy's face contorted with disapproval. He'd not seen a single place on the audition sheet that indicated he was supposed to prepare anything, and he slightly resented Trent - surely the younger kids who didn't know him were now going to be even more nervous that they were off to a bad start. Maybe Trent was trying to see if they could handle that kind of pressure, but hey, this was supposed to be fun, and loads of them were still deeply fragile from trauma. But... maybe Trent was, too, and was just doing his best. Teddy softened at the thought, sympathizing with the man. He'd been through hell, too.

As his peers began to take their turns, Teddy sat back in his chair, comfy and content. He'd figure out what to do whenever his name was called. For now, he was a prolific cheerleader. Gracelyn's monologue was moving and the little Ravenclaw who followed was engaging, both earning solid cheers of support and approval once they finished.

Then there was Kiz. He gave his not-so-little-anymore sister an encouraging squeeze on the shoulder as she headed up to the stage, and his face remained bright, attentive, and proud throughout the whole thing, especially when she stumbled over her words, and hooted and hollered at the end like a proud parent. If she had made eye contact throughout, she would see his unconditional belief in her, and whether she liked it or not, when she returned to her seat and sunk down as if to hide forever, Teddy clobbered her in a bear hug that was more like a head-hug, but was full of the utmost adoration for her. "The worst part's over," he whispered to her, fondly ruffling her hair as he pulled away.

A Slytherin girl in his year went next, and even though he at best considered her an acquaintance, his applause was just as equal and jubilant to that of his friends. It was just how he was. But when Kale Alexander Trent's name was called, Teddy sat up in his seat straighter, an amused, almost mischievous glint in his eyes in anticipation of what was to come. The sixth year Ravenclaw expected a show, and boy, did he deliver. Teddy's expression the whole time was one of awakening, awe, and unbridled elation. Was this akin to what being in love felt like? Merlin. He was beautiful, mesmerizing, and-- in the audience, on Teddy's lap, honking his nose, and the eldest James laughed heartily as his cheeks flushed with color. Absolutely spellbound. Enamored. Was it hot in there or was it just Kale Trent? He deserved a standing ovation, and even if Teddy was the only one, he gave it to him.

Fitting, it seemed, that Cece went next, and although Teddy was still reeling from the full-blown performance the Headmaster's son had just given, he tried to settle down and refocus. Lots of his residual enthusiasm probably went into his experience spectating Cece, whose sweet, whimsical scene had a very different energy from that of Kale, but Teddy's face would've given the impression that it was just as enchanting. He was eager to applaud at the end, eager to cheer, and gave her visual approval in two thumbs up when she rejoined the group in the audience.

The mere participation of Nem was just as surprising to Teddy as it had been when they had walked in. And then as Nem began, the bewilderment was only exacerbated. It was... oddly entrancing, and he couldn't look away. It was a bit haunting, because it was Nem, but the performance itself was... surprising. Full of surprises, they were. As unsettling as it was to be cheering for them, Teddy gave them due credit at the end and still applauded. No verbal cheers, but proper applause, thoroughly fascinated by his classmate.

At Faye's name being called, Teddy smiled and tried to catch her eye to offer her an encouraging nod on her way up to the stage. He wasn't sure why, but her scene caught him off guard - was it the content? Was it the range of emotions she covered? Was it the strength of the performance itself? He didn't know, but it made him happy, and his response when she finished expressed his jubilation. He was proud of her.

Teddy James.

Rising from his seat, Teddy had his hands out to give low high-fives to anyone who reciprocated the gesture as if he was a celebrity emerging from the audience. He was smiling, his gait was level and cool, and he carried an air of confidence as he took the stage, bypassing the table of scripts entirely as he headed for center stage. There'd been one thing that fed his pained soul this summer, and maybe others would find some semblance of solace in it, too.

"Hey, I'm Teddy." A pause, a thought, a look out over everyone, and then, "I measure every grief I meet with narrow, probing eyes," he half-recited, half-explained, "I wonder if theirs weighs like mine, or has an easier size." He'd begun a slow stroll across the stage, his brows furrowing. "I wonder if they've bore it long, or if it just began?" His gaze fell upon Kiz briefly before looking out toward the back wall. "For me, it feels so old a pain. And... I can't help but wonder if it hurts them to live, too, and if they have to try this hard--"

He had to clear his throat, as both the weight of his words and the accompanying emotions with them made him falter, and he took a moment to sort his thoughts, skipping some darker sentiments. "I notice that some, at length, renew their smile - but merely as an imitation of a light that has so little oil." His attention shifted to Trent. "The grieved are many, there is various cause - death is but one, and comes but once for us all. There's grief of want," he counted on his fingers, "and grief of cold, of despair - and although I may not guess the kind correctly... I still presume that some are like my own."

... "Finis. That's my adaption of work by Emily Dickinson." He gave an overexaggerated bow, then he headed off stage, but not before recapping, "'cause we're all in this together," for anyone who had tuned out, but still needed to hear the overarching message. Their grief was different, but universal.

Cool. He'd have a seat.

make up

Pax wasn't technically here to audition. She was here to watch auditions and generally just..... see what was going on. For her she'd much rather be involved behind the scenes. Make up, etcetera. Honestly there were plenty of people who were much better suited to on stage antics than what she was. She hadn't actually heard any word of what they were auditioning for but apparently that didn't matter.

When people interested in costume and make up were directed towards professor Peralta, Pax silently got up and went over there, gaze still casting around and making note of who was doing what (and also who was most likely to be extremely disappointed if they didn't get what they wanted out of this - because that was potentially free entertainment).

Yes, Pax was one whose actual face had impeccable make up, though nothing extreme and not stage make up, it was just the norm for her to wear it day to day. She hadn't packed it on especially for whatever all this was. She stood listening to Peralta and glanced over at the mannequins, the mannequin heads, the make up provided and then (with the sound of Kale Trent being Kale Trent somewhere behind her) simply went over to the table and chose a mannequin head.

She had no questions or complaints about the task at hand, though thought it would be better if they had specific looks to design for a specific production rather than just a creative free for all, but it wasn't worth kicking up a fuss about. The first thing she did was get her wand out and duplicate the mannequin head however, since she wanted to work on two at once, and then she took stock of the provided tools and make up, letting all the loud auditions wash over her while she thought silently about what to paint.

Seeing all the talented kids performing their scenes and monologues made Phoebe SO happy, and so glad that she decided to stick around for the audition. Part of her had been tempted to go off with the scene designers or make-up artists, if only because she wanted to do ALL THE THINGS, in true Phoebe fashion.

But she got to see Kale do his dance and song number, to ardent applause from the crowd, and she got to see Kizzy do the BRAVEST brave thing of her life (the lamb), and she saw Cece be an absolute angel, as usual, and she saw Teddy just wander around and spout poetry, which was so him she wanted to kick him in the knee. Plus Nem? What the heck, Nem? Playing BOTH parts?

She cuddled Kizzy when she came back to sit down, and once Teddy was seated, Phoebe bounced to her feet. Always the last James, but never the worst. "My name is Phoebe Skylar James, and today I will be presenting the iconic Cher Horowitz monologue from the Muggle movie Clueless. Ahem."

Phoebe took her spot on the center of the stage, wishing she had a lectern. It really sold the whole scene. Phoebe popped bright pink gum out of her mouth and rested it on her finger (this also sold the whole scene). "So, OK, like right now, for example, the Haitians need to come to America. But some people are all, “What about the strain on our resources?” She glared at Teddy, because he could take it. How dare Teddy hate Haitians? Also, why did Cher pronounce it like that? "But it’s like, when I had this garden party for my father’s birthday right? I said R.S.V.P. because it was a sit-down dinner. But people came that like, did not R.S.V.P. so I was like, totally bugging. I had to haul butt to the kitchen, redistribute the food, squish in extra place settings, but by the end of the day it was like, the more the merrier!" She somehow managed to toss her messy bun, in spite of the fact that her hair WAS in fact contained and not tossable.

"[i]And so, if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians. And in conclusion, may I please remind you that it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty? Thank you." She popped her gum back into her mouth and winked at Kizzy.

And scene.

Ollie was nervous. She just wanted to be a part of the play, and didn't really care which part she got. She didn't really want a lead role, that would be too much for her on top of school. But she'd be happy with a secondary role or even a stage manager or part of the tech crew! So she made her way over the the auditions. Maybe something was wrong with her because she wasn't she supposed to be nervous now?

Okay, now was her time. She had memorized a few lines from one of her favorite movies, The Devil wears Prada. She wasn't sure if she should come prepared with a movie or a play or a musical, but she was sure that they would except what she had planned. She took a few deep breaths and started her lines.

"This stuff’? Oh, ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. You’re also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic “casual corner” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff"

Could she breath now? Maybe the nerves had hit her now...

Monologue: Mind Trick

Dare looked over the script provided, sure he could've come up with one on his own to prepare. He didn't feel ashamed though.. or perhaps he should have. Given the monologue, he was reading over whilst the others went on stage before him. It was short enough to memorize easily and relatable... but to come up with those feelings... could he do it?

Darius Potter

Not looking anymore, he placed the paper down walking up to the stage. Suddenly the goosebumps were overtaking him as he looked at everyone else sitting watching him. Deep breaths...

Darius blinked, his hands joining each other behind his back before he rose his left foot in a way for his toe to dig into the stage where his blue eyes gazed into. "...Sometimes.. I feel like I'm not normal... what is normal, anyway?" The left foot planted back to the ground, "I guess like everyone else I feel stupid sometimes. I don't want anyone thinking I'm some kind of weirdo." His head rose, blinking as he remembered the amount of people staring, "I wonder if everyone gets strange thoughts but just don’t want to admit it." Pause, "I think we all get strange thoughts. You want to know what kind of thoughts I get?" One foot took a solid step, "Well, I can’t tell you cause, it’s too embarrassing." Another pause, his brows turned inward in what could be seen as confusion or pain, with his hands no longer behind his back, "It is. I just can’t!" His hands rose up to his waist, showcasing his palms, "I mean.. you ever have a thought where your mind just wanders off into some unknown world and it captivates you for a minute or two and suddenly you snap out of it because you realize that it’s a messed up thought?"

Darius sighed exasperately, turning away taking steps back towards off the stage, "That’s as far as I want to go with it, with what I’m telling you cause it makes me feel funny discussing this but do you, honestly; do you ever—" Then he stopped to look back at the audience, "does your mind ever play tricks on you?"

End scene.

Now his heart could stop beating like a jackhammer.

AlwaysSnapesGirl 06-06-2021 04:57 AM

Ivy nodded in understanding. Feeling ill was definitely understandable in response to nerves, especially when doing something in front of a lot of people, so Ingrid definitely wasn't alone. "I get that. Just don't be afraid to close your eyes and take deep breaths, yeah?" That often helped her when she felt overwhelmed.

But now they were being split into their different groups, and...it seemed the third year had decided to go with Professor Peralta's group instead of being on stage, which was fine! "Break a leg! You too Evan!" She sent them both a thumbs up before joining the Headmaster's group at the front.

She was excited to watch what everyone else had prepared, or what they did on the spot with one of the provided scripts. And no matter what, she was going to clap after each one. Everyone deserved applause and support, especially if they'd never done this before.

And she was immediately delighted when Gracelyn began with Shakespeare. And Lisa was portraying Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream! And then Fiona was also taking inspiration from Shakespeare! Ivy was very much a fan of all of it.

And Kinsay! Even though she looked so nervous, it was so neat to see her find her voice as the scene went on.

And then...Kale. It was easy to believe his performance would be incredible, and, well, it absolutely was. Though her face was a bright pink the entire time after that wink he'd thrown her. Her heart was racing too, but that was probably just because of all the energy and excitement and laughter, right? Um, yeah, definitely.

Thank Merlin her name still hadn't been called because Ivy's mind was all over the place.

Cece performing so well as Alice was a great change of pace. And then Nemesis Upstead of all people was up there performing a scene from Beauty and the Beast. That was...interesting. And unexpected.

But it at least got her head back into the game, so she was prepared to be immensely delighted again when Faye brought them back to Shakespeare again. And A Midsummer Night's Dream's Helena at that! Fantastic!

And then Teddy gave a stirring recital of a poem. And Phoebe and Ollie had such fun monologues from Muggle films. And she wasn't sure if Darius' was from something, but he gave a great performance regardless!

Ivy Grimm.

Oh wait - it was her turn already? She'd gotten so caught up in everyone else performances by this point, applauding after each one, she'd almost forgotten she was going to have to go up soon too.

But she felt ready. She was calmer now, but she took a deep breath anyway as she made her way to the stage.

"Hi!" She smiled, brushing a strand of hair out of her face. "I'm Ivy, and I'll also be performing one of Helena's monologues from A Midsummer Night's Dream." No self-consciousness about doing something from the same play as others had done. They all had their own style, after all! And it was a different monologue than the previous two.

Her smile faded, her face taking on a more somber expression. "How happy some o'er other some can be! Through Athens I am thought as fair as she." A brief pause, a small defeated shrug. "But what of that? Demetrius thinks not so. He will not know what all but he do know. And as he errs, doting on Hermia’s eyes," a bit wistful now, "So I, admiring of his qualities."

And now her expression was more thoughtful, and she paced back and forth, fiddling with her hands and speaking as if thinking aloud. "Things base and vile, holding no quantity, Love can transpose to form and dignity: Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is wing'd Cupid painted blind: Nor hath Love's mind of any judgement taste; Wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste," her words picked up a little in speed, and a little bit frustrated, "And therefore is Love said to be a child, Because in choice he is so oft beguiled. As waggish boys in game themselves forswear, So the boy Love is perjured every where."

She paused again, and her pace slowed, sadness and hurt on her face. "For ere Demetrius look'd on Hermia's eyne, He hail'd down oaths that he was only mine; And when this hail some heat from Hermia felt... So he dissolved, and showers of oaths did melt."

A few seconds of silence. And then her expression changed, more alert, as if a lightbulb appeared over her head. "I will go tell him of fair Hermia's flight: Then to the wood will he to-morrow night Pursue her; and for this intelligence If I have thanks, it is a dear expense," a brief pause, as if reconsidering, but then continuing, "But herein mean I to enrich my pain, To have his sight thither and back again." A hand on her heart, and looking as if she were grasping for the slightest bit of hope that Demetrius would love her...

Aaaand scene.

"Thanks!" Ivy smiled again then hurried back to her seat.

That was fun!

Why did she think that there’d only be a handful of people here? This was scary!!! However her nerves eased a little as she watched some other students perform first, and some of them were really good! She wondered if she should have prepared a more traditional monologue, like Shakespeare, as many had already chosen. But hers wasn’t… exactly… traditional. But she wanted to perform something that hopefully no one else would perform. She wanted to portray a mean girl, since it wasn’t her actual personality. Or is it?

BAH, HER TURN.

The Gryffindors eyes darted to each and every face that was looking at her. She then turned her attention to Headmaster Trent, the head judge. Remy cleared her throat dramatically. “My name is Remy Izith Gaeltheos.” Remember the name. Uhhh, uhhh… here goes nothing.

Her facial expression changed to get into character, slight raised eyebrows and a dumb look on her face. “We only wear jeans or track pants on Friday. You can’t wear a tank top two days in a row. You can only wear your hair in a ponytail once a week.” She put her hand on her hip, the other hand shakily holding her script, and looked the imaginary person in front of her up and down. “So, I guess, you picked today.” Cue the fake, short smile. “And if you break any of these rules, you can’t sit with us at lunch. I mean, not just you, like, any of us. Like, if I was wearing jeans today, I would be sitting over there with the…” She paused, forgetting the end of the line. Remy cleared her throat again, “over there…”

AHHHH, SHE COULD FEEL HERSELF LOSING IT.

Umm…” she shuffled the papers, “We always vote before we ask someone to eat lunch with us, because you have to be considerate of the rest of the group. I mean, you wouldn’t buy a skirt without asking your friends first if it looks good on you.

“It’s the same with guys. You may think you like someone, but
…” Her expression changed again, getting SO into character. She portrayed a serious, doe eyed look. “…you could be wrong.”

Remy held character for a few seconds after finishing the last sentence, before smiling at the Headmaster. “Thank you very much.” And she bowed a little. She was a MOVIE STAR in the making.

Just Heath this time since this got so long! xD

So that was a no to anyone joining him, then? Heath nodded in reply, watching Quinn as he went. Then he saw Lisa waving at him, and her question made him smile. “It might be,” he said with a knowing wink. That was all the hint she was getting! She’d have to wait and see like everyone else. He saw Claudine’s mouthed greeting to him but hadn’t enough time to reply to it before things got underway. He was glad to see her approaching him and even more so for the kiss and the words of encouragement. “Thanks!” he said, beaming as he watched her go. “You too!”

He sat quietly as the performances started, paying respectful attention to each one. Gracelyn and Lisa did great! Kinsay’s nerves early on reminded Heath a lot of himself in his earliest auditions, so he made sure to applaud louder for her. Wow, he didn’t know Fiona could act! Kale Trent’s performance left him unsure whether to be intrigued or unnerved. How was he going to hold his own to that, let alone top it? The scene he’d chosen was bound to seem boring by comparison! He was so nervous that he just sort of tuned out everything that happened after Kale… until a voice calling his name jerked him out of his thoughts.

Heath approached the stage with the same seriousness and professionalism as he did any other audition. “Hello, my name is Heathcliff Jones,” he said, giving Headmaster Trent a respectful nod of acknowledgement, “and this is a scene from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, adapted into a Shakespearean-style monologue.” He stood still, taking a moment to draw on his own emotions and life experiences to bring his character to life. When he looked up, he was no longer Heath.

He was Ben Solo… broken and battered but very much alive, ready for another round of battle against Palpatine. Clutching at his side, he took a few limping steps toward center stage. Determined fire burned in his eyes as he began his monologue, “Once fallen, broken, yea - but not yet dead. I grope and fumble, finding purchase on the rock, that I may to the scene once more…” He leaned on the curtain, as if for support. His eyes darted from one end of the stage to the other, searching for an imaginary Palpatine, and a confused expression appeared on his face. “Although I sense my enemy is gone.”

He staggered farther across the stage, stopping abruptly about halfway as he imagined a fallen Rey lying at his feet. With a sound somewhere between a gasp and a sob, he sank to his knees. Raw shock and anguish were written all over his face, and actual tears fell from his eyes. “So soon turned ally, Rey, and too soon g-gone -” His voice broke, and he paused to regain composure. “Why art thou yet so fair? Shall I believe that unsubstantial death is amorous, and that the lean abhorred monster keeps thee here in the dark to be his paramour? For fear of that, I still will stay with thee; and never form this place of dim night depart again. Here…” He looked around defeatedly, continuing in a tired voice. “Here will I remain with worms that are thy chambermaids. O, here will I set up my everlasting rest, and shake the yoke of inauspisious stars from this world-wearied flesh.”

He cradled the imaginary Rey in his arms, looking on with sad, longing eyes. “Eyes, look your last! Arms, take your first and last embrace of her!” His grief-stricken expression changed, gradually becoming pensive. He took a deep, calming breath. “Still now thy thoughts, Ben - join her in the Force.” Remorse and resolve crept onto his face and into his voice as he continued, “Whatever life I have within me yet, thus proffer I to her that she may live, and in full recompense for who I’ve been, and what I’ve done, and wherefore I did so.” His hand hovered over the imaginary Rey’s abdomen, and a smile gradually spread across his face. He reached up, as if to touch the imaginary Rey’s face, but his hand faltered, falling limply at his side as he collapsed to the stage floor. He lay motionless, his eyes staring blankly, a smile frozen on his face. And… end scene!

A few moments later, Heath got back to his feet and, still slightly in character, gave the Solo shrug in lieu of a traditional bow before exiting the stage.

OOC: I couldn’t find a PDF or book preview to screenshot & link, but Heath’s monologue comes from this book.

Showtime... Aibhi exhaled out softly as people went before her before it was finally her turn to go up and audition. Nothing prepared, nothing at all...but she was going to do the best she can do. Approaching...Aibhi's hands began to feel clammy and her heart began to race. She couldn't believe she was about to do this. And she exhaled softly before saying, "H-" She felt like there was a frog stuck in her throat, but she cleared it and chuckled to herself. "Sorry. Hi. My name is Aibhilinn and I'll be honest, I didn't come prepared with anything, but...I will perform this song acapella. It's called "I'd Give My Life For You" from a show called "Miss Saigon." I think the song has a special meaning in my heart so..." She nods and exhales softly again ready to start her audition.

”You who I cradled in my arms...you...asking as little as you can...” It was soft...her mouth was open, but barely a sound came out as she sang...her breath trembled. No music to back up her vocals, just her. Acapella. And of all songs...but she wasn't going to give up. SHe shook off her fear and continued, picking up her volume. "You didn't ask me to be born...you...why should you learn of war or pain? To make sure you're not hurt again...I swear I'd give my life for you..." Looking at the stage she thought of moving around, but she simply knelt down and kept her focus on Headmaster Trent singing to best of her abilities and conveying the emotions of the song. She didn't know when to stop but, she got to one of her favorite parts of the song and raised her hand up towards a light she used to convey as the moon, "But there's just moonlight on my beeeeeeeeeeeeeed Was he a ghost? Was he a lie? That made my body laugh and cry?" Her eyes began to swell up with emotion feeling the song more and more but she fought back her tears. and finished she song with a powerful belt that she had not done in person ever, but there was a first for everything. "I SWEEEEEEAR I'D GIVE MY LIIIIIFE FOOOOR YOOOOOOUUUUUU!" She held her hand close to her chest gripping tightly before finishing the final note and she took a few deep breaths before standing back up composing herself and she lowers her hand and nods.

"Thank you..." And with that...she was off. It was over and done with...for now...

Acting group

Misa was about to answer Lisa when the headmaster called for what they got. She watched as each of the people performed. There was quite a lot of Shakespeare. That was a shame. That was going to be her go to but... it seemed overdone now. She racked her brain. Ummm... TS Eliot? Fitzgerald? No. That wouldn't work would it? How dramatic was this play going to be again?

She glanced over her shoulder wondering if it was too late to join one of the other groups. Meep.

Okay. No. She had this. ... Probably.

She licked her lips and took center stage. "I'm Misa Couture. I'll be given a spoken word performance of the muggle musical Into the Woods."

She looked over her shoulder and sported her very best teenage girl caught in the middle of a HUGE dilemma involving a boy. So basically her normal look. "He's a very smart Prince. He's a Prince who prepares. Knowing this time I'd run from him, he spread pitch on the stairs."[/b]

She chewed her lip and looked around as if there were an answer somewhere out there. She then shrugged. "And I'm caught unawares." Draaaamatic pause "...well... it means that... he cares..." Righhhht?

She then started pacing and gesturing to herself in an imitation of an argument.

"All right, what do you want? Have to make a decision." More pacing.

"Why not stay and be caught?" She stopped pacing and looked out as if mulling it over. "Should I give that a thought? What would be his response?"

She then started pacing again as the thought process continued. "But then what if he knew? Who I am? When I know that I'm not what he thinks that he wants?"

She stopped again as another contradictory thought happened "...Or, then, what if I am?"

She looked around again. The answer was out there... somewhere.

She held up a finger in an IDEA fashion. "I know what my decision is --Which is not to decide." As girls sometimes did. Yes. This was believable. "I'll just leave him a clue." She looked around then up and down before taking off her own shoe and holding it up. "For example, a shoe."

She then smiled and bowed. See. She was capable of not always being quiet and shy. Especially if a handsome prince was involved as stereotypical as that was.

She then put her shoe back on and went to sit down again.

Finneas greeted his students with a bob of the head, only errrr turning a shade of briiiiiight red when Phoebe James made way into the arena with her very LOUD announcement. Another coin? Finneas was soft… and riddled with guilt, thinking of his class of sixth years and their generosity. They taught him so much in these past six years, perhaps he ought to—Er. No, this wasn’t the time to entertain such thoughts.

The only thing he was meant to think about at the moment was … er. The auditions.

He did mean to be auditioning as well, but as they all began to move around the room, Finneas Schmoe came to the realization that he should……. probably be sitting on the judges panel instead. Er. Yes. That would be, er. That would likely be more advised. So he err……. Schmoezied over thata way and took a seat beside Malachi.

Settling in his seat, he pulled out a handy dandy notebook to jot down some notes. Finneas didn’t really know what he was looking for, but he did give everyone ample applause as they went up and recited their lines. It, er, it seemed that many students (Gracelyn, Lisa, Fiona, Faye, Ivy, Heathcliffe) had taken inspiration from William Shakespeare. The man, the muggle, the legend. Schmoe made a note in his little book. Perhaps they’d cover the epic poet during one of their upcoming lessons?

Er. AnYwAy.

The array of performances was incredible! The Schmoester was impressed beyond words with how eloquently Gracelyn and Lisa recited old english. The youngest Ms. James was not quite as confident as her sister, but both stayed true to themselves in the most admirable way. Kale’s energetic performance had Schmoe grinning from ear tO EAR, of course. Cecelia’s monologue was just as whimsical as the Wonderland itself. Nemesis’ choice in ….. scene was. Er. It was. Er. It was a choice.

Finneas was not at all surprised by Faye’s reverence in the delivery of her lines and though he wasn’t surprised by Teddy’s choice either, Finneas did pause to … Er. Wipe his eyes. Because of. Erm. Allergies. Olive’s own monologue helped him recover, but once again Schmoe was Schmoooooe emotional after bearing witness to Darius’s moving scene and Ivy’s thoughtful delivery of Helena’s monologue. Remy proved to be a confident, young talent and Mr. Jones showcased his creativity in adapting a scene from Starwars. The talent was strong in these ones. And, er, though Finneas wasn’t sure that auditions were meant to be done in the form of song or spoken word poetry, he still wrote down wonderful notes of Aibhilinn and Misa’s performance as well.

A critic Schmoe was not.

Bravo everyone. Schmoe was schmoe proud.

Stage make up was something else. Pax knew this wasn't about how well she could apply regular make up (obviously very well thanks), it was about making the face look right even with stage lights washing it out. She had one mannequin that was a more standard stage make up look, where she had worked on the planes of the face, defining shadowed areas, the mouth and eyes appropriately. Pax had actually used her twin's face for inspiration since she didn't even need a reference to picture the specific contours of Nemesis Upstead, and her twin's cheekbones were well suited for showing off stage contouring. Using make up, especially the relatively thick stage stuff, to make the mannequin look like it had actual cheekbones and definition in the brow and nose and lip and jaw was actually quite fun.

Finishing that first one fairly fast, Pax moved onto the second one, on which she wanted to do something more involved. Prosthetics. Colour. Pax adjusted her ponytail tighter and began laying down the make up base.

Neva watched the seventh year as she selected a piece of clothing to center her design around. The glittery tulle was eye catching and the pastel shade was very pretty. The Charms Professor was curious to see how her design came together on the mannequin. From the look of the sketch she'd snuck a peek at, it was going to be quite impressive.

After making a few notes on her clipboard, she moved on to check out what the next student was up to.

SPOILER!!: Pax

Honestly there were plenty of people who were much better suited to on stage antics than what she was. She hadn't actually heard any word of what they were auditioning for but apparently that didn't matter.

When people interested in costume and make up were directed towards professor Peralta, Pax silently got up and went over there, gaze still casting around and making note of who was doing what (and also who was most likely to be extremely disappointed if they didn't get what they wanted out of this - because that was potentially free entertainment).

Neva liked to keep her makeup simple, but she was always impressed by those who were able to create art out of their faces. Dramatic looks that worked and didn't work the wearer took skill and creating a look that was dramatic, eye catching, and beautiful (all while working for the harsh lighting of the stage) would be no easy feat.

Pax seemed to have a handle on it, though. The contouring was impressive on the first mannequin head and she was eager to see what she'd do with the second. After jotting down a few things next to the sixth year's name, she headed for the next student.

Healer Poppy 06-09-2021 12:17 PM

Hold everything!!! Hooooold everything! I’m here, dears. Sorry for being late.” The healer nudged the door fully open with her leg then continued down to stage with a box of goodies in hand and a container of bread floating behind her. “Goodness is that really the time?? I must’ve missed everything!!”

Healer Poppy dropped the prop box by the foot of the stage. “And just wHy do you have the little darlings practising in such dull light?? It’s terrifying! They’ll have the flashbacks.” The last word she whispered loudly, not wanting to upset the little darlings.

“This won’t do at all!” She moved over to the windows and threw them open, moved along the walls lighting the candles then along the chairs making them extra super duper comfortable—for the nerves. Soft been bag chairs were obviously better. Being relaxed was important.

Speaking of relaxing. “I have breeEeAaAddDdD. Come, come, have some. Isn’t it lovely? You can’t audition on an empty stomach!! Come along, audition breeeeaaakkkk!”

Mmmm, could they smell the fresh dough?

very, very late (just look the other way, please...)

Violet had showed up the auditions as planned, even though she didn't see herself as much of an actor. Although she didn't have as much trouble speaking in public as she used to, she was finding. She guessed that after you're been through the kinds of things they'd all been through last year, speaking in front of an audience didn't seem that frightening any more.

But she was interested in writing and thought it would do her good to participate in a play, maybe get an idea of how to write one someday--see how a play was put together, what worked and didn't work, that sort of thing. She was thinking she could help backstage somewhere (not costumes and makeup probably, as she'd never paid much attention to either in real life)--but something to do with the set or lighting or props or things like that.

Maybe do a part--a small one--if they needed someone. Violet did like to listen to good writing. She was enjoying the auditions so far--everyone was surprisingly good. They probably wouldn't need her to act after all, though she'd prepared a piece to audition with--Portia, from The Merchant of Venice (she felt that speech about mercy was something the wizarding world could use right now).

Suddenly, into what was becoming an unexpectedly enjoyable extra-curricular activity for Violet (and she did not get the chance to participate in many of those)--into this nice event bursts that odious woman, so-called Healer Poppy (because Violet found it hard to believe that someone so obtrusive and loud and pushy and unobservant could possibly a real healer). She was here, intruding and bothering everyone and trying to take charge of everything and pushing her ever-present BREAD on everyone (what was up with that stuff, anyway? Violet had yet to actually eat any, but the smell of it had nearly made her faint in the corridor the other day. In fact, Violet couldn't really remember much about what had happened; maybe she really had eaten some? She couldn't be sure).

PhoenixRising 06-10-2021 03:18 PM

so very late, but we've been here. and with the actors pls :3

There was a lot going on and Apollo was just trying to rehearse the song he's been practicing hopefully Atlas and Aries hadn't been too bothered by his rehearsing the last couple weeks, but the second year hadn't really paid any attention to Emmerson's outburst or all the talent that before him. Some of his peers were REALLY good too and had they not been Apollo's competition he probably would have appreciated and been paying more attention. But instead his focus was on the lyrics for the song that had prepared, which he hoped would be enough to give him his start.

It was the arrival of the Healer Poppy lady with her bread that distracted him and he turned to look at her. Really? Her bread was really good, but now seemed to be a REALLY inopportune time to graze on bread and Apollo was sure he would have projectile vomited if he had bread now. Maybe AFTER his scene, but no, right now, there was nothing he could stomach .... even plain sourdough, so forget the fruit bread.

Once his name was called ... he took a deep breath, wishing Isabella or someone was here to give him a comforting hand squeeze before heading up to the center stage after that older Ravenclaw girl's monologue. It had looked like the Slytherin was maybe going to, but not yet? So he guessed it was his turn then.

"Hi everyone... Um... I'm Apollo Adara-Stark and I'll be singing a song from a muggle musical, Rent.... One song glory." He took a deep breath, as he began, and when he concluded, he took a small bow and went to sit down again. Bread perhaps sounded good now.

It had taken a few moments for Nem to settle back into the same state as before, slumped way down in their seat so their chin was almost on a level with their knees, staring vacantly up at the stage as the auditions continued. Nem was not generally one for ambivalence - at least not that they could identify, acknowledge, or admit - but wondering about sticking around through the rest of these auditions and whatever exercises came next was one of those times.

The appearance of Healer Peppy was very helpful in that regard.

Moments after the woman had passed to get to the stage, chirping shrill admonishments towards the Headsman and the Noodle and whoever else, Nem was up and out of their seat - it's a no from me. Only so many times a person could fantasise about sending the woman on a short trip down a long flight of stairs before there was a happy accident that they couldn't yet afford. Not around all these people, at any rate.

So it was the door they headed for, now that the balance had tipped all the way in favour of finding some other endeavour to pursue for the rest of the day.

They were designing costumes...right now? They had to try out too?! Margaret froze. She knew how to hem things. She knew how to...put on clothes. She wasn't so sure about this...designing an outfit for a character. Especially since everybody else had prepared.

She approached a mannequin, patted its shoulder, and decided its name would be Frank. "Hello, Frank," she murmured to the mannequin. "Let's get you some clothes."

Glancing periodically over at Avalon and the others working on their own costumes, she picked out a nice blue bowler hat, and plopped it right onto Frank's head. Then...it clearly needed a bowtie, so she found a long piece of blue fabric, and tied it around the mannequin's neck in a little bow. Not...not how one normally tied a bowtie, but then none of her family members wore bow ties so...she didn't know how to do that.

Next came...finding actual clothes. She tried to block out all the noise from the auditions, and barely registered the arrival of Healer Poppy and bread. She looked for more blue, and settled on a floral button-up shirt. She draped it onto the mannequin. All the blue looked pretty good together, she thought. Unfortunately it didn't seem like her hemming skills would come in handy today...no point in hemming something just to fit a mannequin.

Wait. Bread? She gave up trying to find the rest of Frank's outfit, and instead gave the mannequin an awkward side hug. Was she done? Was the bread for the costume people, too, or just the actors? "Can I have some bread?"

The Narrator 06-12-2021 03:10 AM

The state of utter calm that descends over you is almost impossible to detect at first, slinking and soothing as it is. Your worries and stress fade more with every passing moment. You drift steadily towards total zen, all your anxieties melting away into the bread-scented air. Zeeeennnnnn.

For the time being, nothing seems to matter as much as it did before, not your fears, not the audition nerves, nothing in the now well-lit Duelling Arena, awash with the smell of so many different breads. The aroma fills the space, reaching every nook and cranny, from the audience all the way through to the backstage area.

No worries, no concerns, no care in the world. You are totally at peace, tooootally zennnn.

Fiona had been quietly watching the rest of the auditions from her seat in the audience. She had been feeling a bit tense from her own audition and was slightly fidgety when she suddenly felt the tension vanish from her body. Fiona felt at peace with herself and her fidgeting had ceased. A smile full of total zen appeared on her features.

we just want to be a background dancer ok or a minimal speaking role

VICTORIA GELLAR WAS LATE AND SHE WAS ALSO CRYING. when was she not, though

She sniffled her way into the auditions, hoping Daniel Yoon wasn't here to see her tearstained face...or her puffy eyes. She had worked on something to show Headmaster Trent SO hard, and the fact that she had ALMOST ENTIRELY SLEPT THROUGH IT?! She hated naps now. She would NEVER TAKE ONE EVER AGAIN.

EVIL WERE NAPS.

She took note of a lot of the familiar faces. LISA WAS HERE. And she got to see the tail end of her audition, too. SHE LOOKED SO GOOD. And she somehow...hadn't missed being called? MAYBE Trent circled around to the names who hadn't shown! V eyed the bread being passed around by the TOTALLY weird healer and shook her head quite a bit. No carbs before the dance number. After the dance number, maybe.

So V went when she was called, did her WELL PREPARED FOR A TWELVE YEAR OLD dance number and wiped the sweat from her forehead. Years of dancing school had her back on this one. SHE FELT GOOD ABOUT IT. NOW she could reward herself with some bread.

Prancing toward Healer Poppy, V took a smaller piece aaaaaand took a large chunk out of it. With her TEEEEEEEF. And....you know.

She relaxed. Her shoulders visibly slumped as she did so.

AHHHHH. How nice. The world was nice, wasn't it?

DaniDiNardo 06-12-2021 10:31 PM

Sorry for the delay, guys. It’s…been a little rough IRL <3

Let the record show, Emmerson did NOT appreciate being lumped with the others. If she sat with everyone else, how would the Headmaster know how much of a star she was? How was she going to secure the lead? With her name so far down the list, how could she be sure he would still be paying attention by the time it was HER turn to get on the stage.

Emm huffed, sinking into her seat with her arms folded while she waited or everyone else to be through. The only exception to her sullen expression was when Kizzy went on stage. As her biggest fan, the Gryffindor had to cheer and whistle and make it obvious that the second lead belonged to her bestie. Perfect wing-woman, even when it didn’t have to do with romance.

Finally, it was her turn.

The Third Year rose with a flourish and set to get onto the stage when…Healer Poppy? Was she trying out for the play, too? It didn’t take long for the scent of freshly baked bread to fill her nostrils. Thereafter, it was nothing but calm, smooooooth sailings for this one. Suddenly, not even the play mattered. All her worries over not being picked, all the anxiety of whether the lead was hers or not….she could scarcely remember them.

Emm sank to the floor of the stage, starfishing right there.

”Headmaster Trent? Can we just let me have the lead and then we take the break like Healer Poppy said?” She didn’t want to do anything, didn’t want to be bothered when she was feeling so…incredibly…zen.

“Will someone get me some of the strawberry break? We can share it. I could use a nap right about now—and bread.”

Malachi watched the auditions with avid interest, truly surprised by the talent he was seeing on the stage. It wasn’t that he thought his students were generally untalented, but rather he quite liked what he was seeing and was starting to think it was going to be difficult to hand out roles when this was all over.

After making a note of the previous audition, Malachi eased back in his chair to watch Cambridge. That’s when the bubbly redhead happened. Was it just him, or was it getting harder and harder to concentrate these days? He was always falling into these bouts of….calm out of nowhere and it was usually when she was around.

Like now.

The Headmaster leaned forward in his seat, trying to shake the feeling so he could really concentrate on the rest of the auditions but it seemed the harder he fought was the calmer he got. This…this definitely wasn’t right….but there was nothing he could do to stop the zen that overcame him.

Cambridge…no…no, get up. We have….we have to finish…..” Was that melon bread?

Maybe…..maybe….a small break wouldn’t hurt.

“Alright everyone, take five. Just…I dunno…have some bread, I guess.”

AlwaysSnapesGirl 06-13-2021 12:29 AM

Ivy had already been feeling great after completing her audition and watching everyone else's audition after her. And she was a little curious to see what the others taking part backstage were up to. But then Healer Poppy swooped in with her bread, and that was an immediate distraction.

A very calming distraction too, smelling that bread. Despite feeling quite positive, those feelings faded away, quickly replaced by a peaceful zen-like state.

How wonderful that the Headmaster said they could take five. Perfect timing. Because all she wanted right now was a few slices of bread. She typically went for the strawberry bread, but the banana bread seemed to be calling her name today. She did, however, pull out her wand and levitate a slice of strawberry bread over to Emmerson. Helpful, she was. And comfortable. This seat was comfortable. And the bread was good. She could just sit here and eat it aaaall day.

Yes, Claudine knew that she would sneak away for a bit to catch Heath’s audition. This was exactly what she did and was pleased when she realised that she had averaged just the right time when to do so. Even though he had already gotten started, it didn’t seem that she had missed a lot. The sixth year stood there, watching in awe at the boyfriend’s acting. Sure, she’d seen him on stage before but his talent never ceased to amaze her. Regardless of if he got the lead, she’d always be proud of him.

She hung around a bit longer to catch a few more auditions, which in her opinion were okay. Heath had been the best and no, she wasn’t being biased. Okay, maybe a little. Claudine’s attention shifted to Healer Poppy. Was the woman auditioning too? Because she certainly was being dramatic.

The girl winced at the sudden change in light, and willed herself to adjust to it quickly. And was that bread she smelt? It certainly was. Claudine didn’t know why but she suddenly felt very calm. All that excitement she’d felt seemed to have melted away. With Trent confirming the break, Claudine grabbed a bit of cinnamon bread then went off to find Heath. She was nibbling on the bread as she sought out that giant of a Ravenclaw.

Watching the others audition really made her worry that she would end up with a lame role, like the sheep or the donkey of the play. She couldn’t help but smile at her friends as they performed, feeling comfort that they were there with her. How fun if they all made the play.

Obviously the stress of auditioning had eased since she had finished her piece, but there was suddenly a very familiar smell in the air that made her feel… ahhhhhhhhhh… like there were no worries left to feel. Complete calm.

Right when she wanted to hear it the most, the Headmaster called a break. Remy let out a loud sigh and leaned back against her hands, momentarily closing her eyes and forgetting where she was.

Watson 06-13-2021 02:05 PM

Lisa had grinned at Avalon when she had recommended something light and comedic. She had thought the same; however, she didn’t have much time to offer her thoughts as the groups were being gathered together. She gave the seventh year a smile and a wave as she left to go join her group.

Her audition happened and she had returned to her seat, feeling a little more relaxed but also overthinking the audition completely. Sure she had emphasized words that had SEEM RIGHT… but were those truly the right ones? Lisa rubbed her face briefly and sighed before looking up to watch the next auditions. Wow! The auditions were all awesome!! She clapped her hands at the end of each audition. Remy rocked it so the littlest Nam jumped to her feet to give her friend a standing ovation and then she saw Heath’s performance. She LOVED his performance because it was STAR WARS! And he did it so well. Everyone has an awesome audition even Kinsay who had seemed super nervous at first - Lisa was really happy with her audition.

V; however, did look out of sorts when she walked in. Lisa watched her friend, wishing that she could go and ask her if she was okay but there wasn’t much time. She watched her do her dance (and V was seriously a good dancer) and applauded her friend. She’d come find her later.

She was waiting for the next person (who was Emmerson) to take the stage when Healer Poppy entered with bread. More bread? She wouldn’t say no… but thank goodness she was still growing vertically. If she wasn’t and with all the bread that she was eating, she would have started becoming more and more round like. Lisa’s eyebrows raised as Healer Poppy mentioned the light of the room. Why? Why was she always on about lights? She fished out her notebook jotting down three words. Light. Poppy. Bread. It was all she could muster out of her because she was feeling a little too relaxed. It had washed over her unexpectedly and she was starting to feel very sleepy….

When Trent called five, Lisa was super happy. She darted over to V to see if she was okay. “Great dancing!” she said with a smile before hooking arms with her and whispering. “Are you okay?” She didn’t like people who made her friend cry and she was VERY much hoping that it wasn’t Daniel Yoon that had made her cry. If he had, she knew that there would be some more digging to do there based on the first interaction that she had witnessed between the two.

with the actors :3

Florrie had turned up at the auditions prepared to BLOW. EVERYONES. SOCKS. OFF. with her turn. Except, as the others performed, she found herself slinking lower and lower into her seat. Every person who went up on that stage and performed had her feeling something she wasn't used to - insecure. And she didn't want to get up there and perform, not anymore.

When Healer Poppy arrived, the Hufflepuff's initial reaction was to wrinkle her nose at the presence of bread, but after a moment she felt a sense of utter calm descend upon her. And the last however-long, of feeling nervous and like she couldn't go up and perform after everyone else had? All of that dissipated.

Just as Headmaster Trent announced that they were going to have a break?

"A break?" Florrie asked calmly - even that a difference to what usually would have been incredulity at the idea of a PAUSE when she was ready. "I guess that's fine, but I'm going next, okay? First up after the break," she informed the Headmaster, offering a serenely winning smile.

"I'll be doing Lillian's monologue from Stories, buy Morris Panych." Florrie added, seemingly as an afterthought.

Healer Poppy 06-14-2021 07:29 PM

Yes. Yes. A break. It was going quite according to her plan. With many already reaching for bread, the healer helped herself onto the stage.

“AheeEEeeMmmM. May I have everyone’s attention please? I have just one announcement. It’ll be posted later for those not here and it’s just wwooonddeerrfuuull news!! From now on, all classes will have bread. All the sorts you want. It will take extra work on my part but I’m sure the elves will love to help!”

She already had them helping. A bit of elf magic added nicely to the taste. No complaints yet, not from any who had actually tried them.

”There’s no reason the students need to be starving at all times of the day. How are they ever going to learn? It’s preposterous and I won’t hear of it.”

The little dears were welcome. Now they could have classes with a lot more comfort…and calm. They could thank her at the end of the year.

Kinsay was feeling all sorts of awful about her audition, but Kale’s encouragement helped as did Teddy’s hug and Phoebe’s cuddles. The way her friend’s cheered didn’t go unnoticed, but it was all a little hard to acknowledge in the moment when all Kizzy wanted to do was melt into the ground. Everything was fine.

After managing to settle down a little, Kinsay made sure to cheer loudly for everyone who went up to perform, just as her friends had done for her. It was really nerve-racking up there. She knew. So everyone got applause. Kale also received a big smile as he playfully jumped down to where the rest of them were sitting. Kins couldn’t contain her fully-belly laughter as he draped himself across Teddy’s lap and honked her brother’s nose. Teddy was flushed, did he know? Hehehe. Kins watched him curiously, momentarily distracted, before jumping up to her feet to join him in a standing ovation.

Settling back down into her seat, Kinz continued to clap quietly for Cece as her friend made her way up to the stage. Her Alice was so whimsical and soft and just so perfect. Kizzy made sure to cheer lots. It was nice to see her friends in their element, it took Kinz’s mind off of the residual, nervous way her stomach was still feeling.

With Nemesis up next, Kiz paid special attention. She smiled up at the stage, in case he ever looked over. Faye did a wonderful job too and Kiz made sure to cheer loudly, but then quieted herself quickly to pay extra special attention to Teddy. She gave him a mighty high-five as he stood up, but then sat in quiet reverence as he began reciting his piece. When he spoke, she could feel his words in her whole body. That was Teddy’s talent. He was so good at making people feel things. It was so fitting that Phoebe was called up next. Kinsay was beaming the WHOLE time her big sister was up on stage. Her hero. She, like Kale and Teddy, received a standing ovation (and also BIG CUDDLES when she came back to her seat). Hi, Fifi. That was awesome.

Kinz was feeling all sorts of exhausted now, but she still made sure to cheer after Ivy’s emotion-filled performance and Heath’s dramatic monologue. But. Um. Everything after that was a blur, until the arrival of Healer Poppy and BREAD. Kinz was quick to her feet, grabbing a few different slices and bringing them back to her seat to share with Teddy and Phoebe while they waited for Emm’s performance; Kins was SO eager to cheer for her friend.

…..

Actually. She had been eager before, but not anymoreeee. Now she was just zen. Soooo peaceful. No emotional highs or lows. No thoughts. Head empty.

This bread was so good. She especially liked the sweet bread. And it was so nice that they’d get to have some in their classes from now on. So nice. Healer Poppy?” Kinz raised her hand slowlyyyy. She had one (1) question. An important one. ”What’s in the bread?” Because this was the best bread she had ever eaten and Kinsay James needed to know. She NEEDED to know so she could ask her parents to make some for Christmas dinner. Mmmm. So yum.

Violet's headache had returned with a vengeance and the brighter lights seemed to hurt her eyes for some reason. She had been confident she knew her audition piece just a few minutes ago, but now her thoughts were spinning and she wasn't sure she remembered how it started. And now they were taking a break? She had really hoped she could go next, before she forgot what she was doing all together.

Then her ears picked up at Kinsay's question. It was a very good question, and one Violet wanted to know the answer to. She was vaguely surprised that no one had asked it before.

LilFox06 06-15-2021 07:34 AM

Misa was growing ever increasingly tolerant of the perpetual smell of bed. She vaguely remembered a time when it had such a strong association with her old life that she wanted to cry.

But now... now the smell of bread was nice again. Comforting. Made her wonder why she ever had a problem with seeing and smelling it.

"A break sounds nice." she agreed in a light airy voice. She plopped down on the edge of the stage and swung her legs in the open air. A good break was good for the creative mind and for centering. Yes.

Kolyander 06-15-2021 02:55 PM

Extremely incredibly late :/ .. Been here with the actors all along

Dahlia still wasn't entirely sure this was the best idea but she did love pretending and that's exactly what acting was. Pretending. Being another version of herself and having a good time doing it. She pretended alllllllll of the time, constantly. So there really wasn't anything for her to be worried about.

Yet she was.

Her hands were slightly shaky and a bit sweaty too. It was getting hard to swallow and breath with her throat being so dry. Everyone was so good as they stood up there on the stage one by one preforming their favorite poems, plays and stories. Lia slumped down in her chair, hugging her knees to her chest trying her best to not allow her nerves to get the best of her. Would anyone notice if she happened to slip out of her now and not try out?

Just when she was thinking it was all too much, in walks Healer Poppy rambling about lighting and bread. The sweet sweet scent of bread. All kinds of bread quickly filled the area and within seconds Lia found herself feeling totally calm. So calm in fact, that she stood up and walked onto the stage with all the confidence in the world when her name was called.

"Hello, I'm Dahlia Jane Donovan and I'm going to be doing a piece from Peter Pan." Taking a small step back and quietly clearing her throat the second year Ravenclaw then began her very own version of 'You Can Fly'. Because who didn't wish they could fly as a small child and want to go off to Neverland? Uhhh, she did!

She did her very best to play each part. Peter, Wendy, John and Michael. Giving each one their own voice so they could be told apart. The mention of needing 'dust' had her pulling gold shimmering glitter from her pocket which she sprinkled upon the children (herself). Jumping about the stage as the child had in the movie and play upon their beds and making like she was really flying along in the sky, spinning and twirling all about no doubt making herself dizzy. When her audition was over she returned to the center of the stage. "Thank you!" With a warm smile she walked off the stage and returned to her seat. That hadn't gone so badly.

kayquilz 06-16-2021 01:01 AM

V was very contently chowing down on the bread, feeling much more at ease and waaaaaay less stressed as her BESTIE LISA approached her. "Oh. I was crying because I was late. I overslept, and it stressed me out," she said very calmly, as if she were describing the weather. "But I feel good now. I got to DANCE and this bread is hitting the spot!" she beamed and patted Lisa's hand affectionately.

Kinsay's question was a really good one. "Yeah! Because it is SOOOOO good, Healer Poppy!" she beamed and gave her TWO thumbs up.

Lissy Longbottom 06-16-2021 01:19 AM

Gabi hadn't signed up to help with the auditions, because she had a LOT of very important deputy headmistress things she needed to do. BUT thankfully for everyone, she'd been so productive lately! Her mood had changed dramatically and she just felt so carefree...it actually helped her not to stress about everything, which in turn had made her very very productive!

So why not grace everyone's presence by attending the auditions? She was sure the kids could use a supportive word of encouragement from her!

The moment she entered the room, she felt herself smiling softly as a calm feeling overcame her. After last term, she really truly felt at PEACE now in this school. That had to be it. "Did I hear someone say bread?" she asked with a grin as she walked in, trying not to seem too eager as she smelled the unmistakable smell of melon and bread mixed together. Normally she didn't do carbs but this term she'd been making exceptions...

Healer Poppy 06-16-2021 09:46 PM

Why that Ravenclaw (Dahlia) decided to do a performance while they were on break was testament enough to the fact these children were overworked and didn’t know when or how to take a break. It was sad really, to never be able to fully shut down. It was obvious they were being pushed too hard by the staff.

Healer Poppy turned to the incessant third year Gryffindor girl at the question of the bread.

“No no, you don’t need to worry about that, a secret recipe, formulated with care. Nothing you need to concern yourselves with.” Nothing any of them needed to concern themselves with. The bread was good and that was all they needed to know. There were very few secrets the woman kept, this was one of them.

Her smile returning, Healer Poppy levitated some bread over to the former healer. “Help yourself. We were just talking about how great it was. I think that’s all for today, children. No need to fuss yourselves any further. I’m sure there’s enough for your professors to go off. Have some bread on your way out.”

Wait, what? Auditions were over? But Violet hadn't even had a chance to do anything yet, how could any of the professors have any idea of what she could or wanted to do? She felt vaguely that she should feel extremely disappointed by this, but with her head spinning from the increasing smell of the bread, she just felt kind of floaty and numb and couldn't bring herself to care very much.

sneaking in my audition, sorry for being so late!

Morgan was sorely unprepared for this audition, but he was only doing this on impulse anyway so it shouldn't have been all that surprising. Luckily there were script things already there for those less than prepared and the sixteen year old quickly glanced through them till he found one that looked remotely interesting. Or it seemed to be about a shark which was cool. What was annoying though was that he seemed to be one of the last ones to get to audition so he was getting really fidgety while he waited for his turn.

Sure, he hyped up his friends when it was their turn, giving big applause to their performance. But he was starting to get impatient because practically the whole school was here. Good thing there were snacks though and he helped himself to Healer Poppy's freshly baked bread. Yum!

Eventually he started to relax, not that Morgan was really aware of the gradual zen that seemed to take over. He just.... didn't feel that impatient anymore. And then.. well he just decided that it was his turn, finally!

He hopped up from his seat with script in hand and took his place at the front of the room. "So, I guess this is a part from a muggle movie called Jaws? I think it's about a shark.." Morgan hadn't seen it or anything, or even heard of it, but that's what it seemed like from skimming the monologue. And he hadn't even practiced it while he waited his turn, so he was just going to wing it here.

"I understand you’re having a little shark trouble," he started, trying to dramatically emphasize a few words here and there for effect. "I know you have a visitor off your southern shores. I think it could be my shark. I’m interning at the American Museum of Natural History, but the Oceanographic Research Institute in South Africa is co-sponsoring my thesis paper arm in arm with the Natural Institute of Health and the Marine Fishery Service." There were a lot of big words there that didn't come out as effortlessly as he would have liked... but an attempt was made. "I’m trying to prove that the shark that killed Christine Watkins last Friday was the same rogue that savaged these." Here Morgan mimed handing over a sheet of paper. "The trail of a rogue shark leads all over the world. This is only a theory. It has never been authenticated, but there is a wonderful chance that the shark that killed the Watkins girl and the man-eater I tagged off the Great Barrier Reef are the one and the same. Off and on I’ve tracked it to New Zealand, Santiago Bay, Cape Town South Africa… uh … the Gulf of Guinea, then West Palm Beach, Florida last December... and finally I predicted it would follow the warming Gulf Stream into the Northern Seasonal Zones, and release an attack pattern along the Jersey Coast. I was off by just three hundred miles. It hit you instead. All I’m asking is for a little future cooperation. I could predict future outbursts of attack activity in the area. Use me… Let me use you."

Finished, he gave his audience a bow then tossed his sample script back into the pile. Just in time to be told they were done for the day. Sweet! "Thanks for the bread, Healer Poppy! It's delicious," he added as helped himself to more on his way out.

Alas, Pax didn't get to finish her second mannequin, though she got almost all the way done - prosthetics including a nose and a chin that both looked like they might take someone's eye out if the mannequin happened to be thrown in the direction of, say, a certain annoying so-called healer. Not that Pax did. Instead, when the woman arrived and began with the bread again, she subtly adjusted the nose jewellery she wore and remained silent, more wary than calm though she was careful to stay relaxed. She shot a little look at Peralta as they were summarily dismissed by the healer (some audition huh), and then went for the door.

On second thoughts, Pax grabbed some bread on her way out. For..... later.

Kolyander 06-18-2021 03:28 PM

Dahlia was in noway aware that she had done her audition during what was supposed to be a break for the them all. The scent alone from that bread had mellowed her out enough where all she had wanted to do was preform and do her very best. Which was what she had hoped she had done. There was nothing else she could do now. The rest was up to the judges.. er Professors and Headmaster.

Well there was one thing. Umm, make that two. Healer Poppy was telling them that auditions were over now and that they could leave. So she was going to leave but first.. she was going to get herself some of that amazing bread. She walked over to get some taking a slice or two of her most favorite, the strawberry kind. "Thank you for the bread, Healer Poppy." Lia smiled warmly in thanks. Waving at everyone else still there and thanking all of the Professors and Headmaster once again before she left.

Emzily 06-18-2021 08:00 PM

Remy gave a little curtsey in response to Lisa's standing ovation. That girl was such a precious gem. She was trying to watch Dahlia's performance, but seemed to be distracted with nothing. It was just sooooooo mellow in this room. Must've been the bread, because she certainly wasn't feeling mellow when she first walked in.

UGH - Remy felt glad when Healer Poppy declared auditions over. Not just relief, but she just wanted to chill out, man.

Rising to her feet, Remy grabbed some more bread and didn't hesitate to start munching on it as she headed out. "Thanks, Healer Poppy. Bbbbyyyyee, everyone." Wave, wave. Bye, bye.
